EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Back in charge Taking charge again would not have been among Lord Harris’s plans when he began to step back from day-to-day involvement just a few months ago. It’s safe to say that Darren Shapland’s departure from Carpetright (see p6) wasn’t on Lord Harris’s radar when it was announced that he was stepping back from day-to-day involvement last August. Shapland’s inability to commit to another three-and-a-half years at the chain saw him depart with a year’s salary, Lord Harris re-installed as executive chairman, and Graham Harris promoted to the board after just four months at the firm – barely time to get to know the company let alone the products he was in charge of buying. Lord Harris is now 71 and shareholders – of which he is the largest – must be wondering for how long he must remain in charge. An

industry sage posed this question to me: Is anyone else able to run it as well and what would happen if Harris wasn’t there? Who the next chief executive is could be one of the most important decisions Lord Harris has had to make. Obviously no-one knows how long the decision will take, but don’t expect any appointments soon. Something that retailers do know is by how much their business rates will rise next year (see p6). The fact that, according to the BRC, retailers are paying £3.44 for every £1 they pay in corporation tax is absurd, as is the Government’s decision to push back the revaluation due in 2015 by two years. While councils have been told to be voter friendly and freeze council tax, it is retailers (and other businesses) that are picking up the bill. It is high time that a new system was created. The introduction of the National Bed Federation’s Code of Practice (see p10) is to be welcomed, providing reassurance to consumers that what they are buying is what it says it is and is safe. Let’s hope retailers get behind the initiative and congratulations to those involved in its creation.

NEWS

Retailers fear effect of Bed Show to get bigger rise in business rates Retailers’ business rates will rise by 3.2% next year, an increase of £242m for the sector. The Office for National Statistics says the RPI rose by 3.2% in September, and this will be used to set 2014’s increase. Retailers already pay more than £7.3bn in business rates. ‘Across the country retailers are adding up what this increase in the RPI will mean for the cost of their business rates next year,’ says Helen Dickinson, BRC director general. ‘Many will be wondering whether they will be able to stay open. New analysis by the BRC shows that because of this increase, retailers are going to be paying £3.44 in business rates for every £1 they pay in corporation tax in 2014. That’s a rise from £2.48 in 2005 and demonstrates just how radically our tax system has changed and how hard our high streets are being hit.’

The Bed Show will take a third hall next year, increasing space by about a quarter. ‘Demand to exhibit at the show has grown year-on-year so taking on the additional hall means we’re able to create around 25% more space,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. ‘This enables us to have more members exhibiting but also accommodate requests for larger stands – however we will be maintaining the

current restrictions of 80sqm per brand up to a maximum of 320sqm per member organisation. We will also be reconfiguring the layout to include additional café/ refreshment areas across the three halls.’ This year visitor numbers grew by 5% to just under 1,400. The 2014 event will take place from 23-24 September, with the gala dinner and awards on 23 September.

Harris back in charge as Shapland leaves Carpetright Just four months after revealing he was to take a back seat on day to day involvement at Carpetright, Lord Harris has returned as executive chairman after its chief executive told the board he could not stay at the chain for another three and half years. Darren Shapland, the former finance director, had agreed to stay for five years when he returned as chief executive last May. But last month he told Carpetright’s non-executive directors he could no longer commit to that term. This prompted the board to change its management immediately to avoid uncertainty, with Graham Harris being promoted from trading director to chief operating officer and joining the board. ‘I honestly don’t know why,’ was Lord Harris’s reply to being asked why Shapland was unable to commit. Lord Harris said he was enthusiastic about tackling the

Ikea market share target Gillian Drakeford, Ikea UK country manager, has said the chain wants to double its market share by 2020. Drakeford, who moved from China to the UK in August, wants sales to reach £2bn by opening more stores and boosting online sales. ’We have been in the UK for 26 years, but we have only

6

really been scratching at the surface in terms of market share and the position we have. At times we have been seen as a player on the side, rather than the main player,‘ she says. ‘I see a tremendous opportunity here. We can double our market share with the steps we are taking.’

Interiors Monthly November 2013

challenges that the business continues to face in difficult economic times and that Graham Harris had already made a strong contribution. ‘Although I have been with Carpetright for only four months I have been impressed with the underlying strength of the business,’ said Graham Harris. The chain said Shapland’s departure had nothing to do with the OFT’s investigation into pricing or the recent dip in sales. UK like for like sales dropped by 2.5% in the 10 weeks to 29 September with total sales down 4.1% in what was described as ‘volatile trading’. The chain warned that this, combined with its Dutch operation expected to fall into the red, would mean ‘the group’s full year profit will be significantly below previous expectations.’

Branching out: Upholstery chain CSL is due to open its 25th branch next month with a 20,000sqft store in Coventry. It plans to reach 42 stores by 2016. So far this year it has opened branches in Slough and Paisley, along with a Scotland distribution centre. It achieved a pre-tax profit of £2.5m on sales of £89.2m for the year to December 2012.

DFS enjoys record profits and pays £34.4m to owner Furniture chain DFS has returned dividends of £34.4m to owner Advent International after enjoying record profits and sales. Sales rose by 7.4% to £670.8m, with EBITDA up 4% to £86m in the year to 27 July. Like for like sales were not disclosed but Ian Filby, DFS ceo, says the chain has ‘been enjoying a period of prolonged like for like growth’. ‘I am pleased to report another year of progress in which we again achieved record sales and profits, and improved our market share in a challenging marketplace,’ he says. The eight stores opened during the year were performing to expectations and it had invested £2m in staff training, he added. ‘Since the beginning of the current financial year we have opened new stores in Aintree and Ipswich and launched a new website with improved functionality, designed in particular for the growing number of customers who access our online channel through tablets and mobile phones.’ Filby says 80% of customers go online before visiting a store and less than 10% of shoppers are buying directly online without having seen the product in-store. ‘People are much better informed. They do their homework beforehand. Most people are quite wise to sit in a product they are going to have to live with,’ he says. Filby says the chain has successfully targeted women, with an emphasis on product rather than price. ‘Both our

DFS is attracting more female shoppers

advertising and our product ranges appeal to all women, from the value seeker to the more aspirational. Both love the advertising. We’re getting very good feedback from customer tracking. We’ve really adopted a style that’s more feminine, broader in appeal and with a touch of humour. It’s about women building the heart of the home.’ Filby also ruled out reports that Advent was looking to float the chain. ‘There are no current plans to pull out at the moment. They are happy with their investment,’ he says.

Fast delivery: Cormar Carpets has expanded the number of its Express Collect centres throughout England and Scotland, from 16 to 23. A majority of retailers are now within a 30-minute drive of a centre where they can arrange next day pick-up of orders placed by 2pm. Cormar has invested more than £500,000 in 10 vehicles for its delivery fleet as part of its annual replacement programme. These will increase the fleet to 55 until January.

Home Bargains looks south Home Bargains is to bring its discount offer, including furniture and homewares, to the southern half of the country with plans for 400 stores. The chain has 300 stores and wants 700 branches by 2018. The company has begun work on a

10

1million sqft distribution centre in South Wiltshire to support the new outlets. The move came as sales topped £1bn for the first time, climbing by 16% to £1.05bn. Pre-tax profits rose from £84.2m to £110.9m in the year to June 30.

Promotion for safety code The National Bed Federation is to promote its new Code of Practice to consumers in the New Year. The scheme, which came into effect on 1 November, requires members to be independently audited to certify they comply with regulations covering flammability, cleanliness of fillings and trade descriptions. Auditing of existing members has taken place over the past few months, with the majority now approved. From 2014 onwards, all members must meet the conditions and pass the audit. ‘We want the trade and the public to know that if they buy a product from an NBF member they can buy with confidence, knowing that safety standards are being met,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director.

High chair fit for a king The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will receive a gift of a high chair for Prince George from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers this month. The chair comes from Katie Walker Furniture which won the livery company’s design competition to make a chair for the prince. Walker made the chair, with Roger Smith, from rippled ash, chosen for its whiteness, supplied by Sutton Timber. Felled in 2001, the wood originated from the Longleat Estate. The chair is finished with white tinted hard wax oil. The safety harness is supplied by Clippasafe and has a webbing colour combination specifically produced for the chair. The design was guided by the functional aspects of a high chair. The back rest curves around the body for comfort and provides a sense of containment. This curve also allows one front leg to flow seamlessly into the other. To achieve this, the front legs and the top rail of the backrest are steam bent. All other curved elements are laminated from 1.5mm ash veneer or birch plywood.

‘I’m thrilled to win such a commission: not only is it a chance to create a real piece of history, but it is wonderful to be chosen to represent my profession,’ says Walker.

Arighi Bianchi joins ombudsman Leading independent furniture and flooring retailer Arighi Bianchi has joined The Furniture Ombudsman. ‘Customers have been used to dealing with our wonderful staff. We pride ourselves on

our excellent customer service, so joining The Furniture Ombudsman is an obvious next step to providing complete customer reassurance,’ says Nick Bianchi, Arighi Bianchi director.

Derby store celebrates 85 years Derby independent furniture and flooring retailer Hunters has celebrated its 85th anniversary. The store was founded by brothers Reg and Wilson Hunter in 1928. In 1988 it was bought by Robert Sheard, who had previously managed the Co-op and Debenhams stores in Derby. ‘I’d had a great time running the department stores but I wanted the new challenge of owning my own business,’ says Sheard. ‘Hunters was already a very well established company that had a great trust with its customers. But it had become a little bit run down up to that

12

Interiors Monthly November 2013

point and needed brightening up. I grabbed the opportunity,’ he says. Although the company was losing money when he bought it, Sheard insists he made the right decision. ‘It was difficult but it’s all worked out very well. All we’ve done is offer a really good quality product, with excellent service and to expand and develop at the right times,’ he says. His son Matthew joined the business five years ago. ‘We’ve increased our shop space where other shops are cutting back and we’ve carried on investing,’ adds Sheard.

Van blaze destroys store Ponsford’s Furniture For Less store in Sheffield was destroyed last month after a van in the loading bay caught fire and spread. Mick Mason, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service incident commander, says the fire started when a van parked in the loading bay of the Sheffield store developed an engine fault causing a fire that spread. Fire crews spent seven hours bringing the blaze under control. ‘It was a big and very dynamic fire which took a long time to bring under control. When I arrived it was well alight and the flames had gone through the roof. We had four pumps at the scene which was made up to eight. At its height, around 40 firefighters were tackling the flames,’ he says. Dave Kiddy, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service head of service delivery support, says there was no sprinkler system installed at the store and urged businesses to consider installing them.

YOUR 2014 SUCCESS STRATEGY 5 ESSENTIAL WAYS TO MAXIMISE YOUR SALES AND PROFIT

How to gain the most from marketing Attracting new customers in the current climate can be an expensive game but you don’t need to spend a lot of money on marketing to gain significant results. Spent wisely, even a modest marketing investment can deliver both short and longterm benefits to a business. What you need to do is: Survey your customers and focus on their needs and wants. Be specific, honest and clear about what you can offer. Keep in touch – send email updates or a newsletter. Get to know your competitors and what they are offering and add a point of difference. Use coupons or e-vouchers that are easy and cheap to design and distribute. Offer incentives such as a discount off their next order. Encourage referrals from existing customers and tie in with an incentive, such as a prize draw. Build and maintain your relationship with your regular customer base on each interaction or sale. It is easier to keep a customer than to find a new one. Aim to provide an exceptional experience on the first sale. Every customer is different – treat them that way. Team up with related businesses – just make sure they are reputable. Join professional or social groups so you can network with other people. Tell people or write a press release if your business wins an award or you’re doing something new. Specialise – you will be more attractive to customers if you are an expert in what you do. Promote yourself as an expert to local media, write an article or start a blog. Lead a trend or solve a problem that you have spotted. Volunteer to speak at meetings or seminars related to your field. Get involved in charity – offer to host an event on your premises and invite the media. Get involved with the community – try fundraising or offer your product or service as a competition prize. But remember to always refer back to your overall marketing objectives to ensure that you achieve what you set out to do.

MIFF Malaysia

EXHIBITION GUIDE

High score MIFF celebrates its 20th year in 2014

More than 6,000 buyers attended this year’s show

22

Interiors Monthly November 2013

After a record setting 2013 show, the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) is drawing strong exhibitor response for its 20th anniversary event on 4-8 March. Exhibitors have snapped up 80% of the 80,000sqm floorspace at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and nearby Matrade Exhibition & Convention Centre (MECC). ‘This is extremely positive for MIFF as we celebrate 20 successful years in the furniture trade show industry. The fact that MIFF has maintained its position as South East Asia’s number one furniture destination year after year speaks of the strength of our trade show and our track record,’ says Tan Chin Huat, MIFF chairman. He says exhibitors and visitors can look forward to an international showcase of high quality and a wide variety of products at great value. MIFF 2013 ended on a high note, generating a record £530m in sales and a turnout of more than 6,000 global buyers from 140 countries. The event was 25% larger at 80,000sqm to accommodate more exhibitors from Muar, the furniture capital of Malaysia. Following the resounding debut of the MFA Hall, the Muar Furniture Association has indicated the number of exhibitors will increase next year in its designated area. Office and household furniture were again the strongest segments at MIFF 2013, buoyed by the attendance of more influential buyers and demand from emerging markets. MIFF has consistently delivered quality buyers from neighbouring South East Asian countries, East Asia, North America, Europe and Australia. In recent years, visitors from emerging economies in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America have risen. Ruca Chien, Taiwan Furniture Manufacturers’ Association president, says: ‘I extend my heartiest congratulations to MIFF on its 20th anniversary. We are proud to have a business association with MIFF since 2000. MIFF has the best potential in Asia in terms of scale of visitors and exhibition. The organising and planning have been professionally done and the services excellent. Many Taiwanese companies have reaped success and will continue to participate in MIFF.’ Visit: www.miff.com.my

IMM Cologne Germany

EXHIBITION GUIDE

Merging rooms Even in the bathroom, furniture and interior design concepts play a crucial role The room which for decades ranked right behind the cubbyhole in the hierarchy of living spaces (and was furnished just about as lovingly) is currently presenting the most exciting performance of all: the bathroom. What used to be the epitome of run of the mill design no longer seems to fit into any neat category: a waterproof washing station or an aesthetically styled meditation room? A comfort zone for relaxing, a health temple equipped for steam and light therapy treatments, a smart fitness room or candlelit wellness oasis, a fun bathroom with iPod-controlled sound or quite simply a hub for early-morning family reunions – the bathroom unites more functions than virtually any other area of the home. And it brings together things that don’t actually belong together: water, wood, textiles and electrical appliances. IMM Cologne will give visitors plenty of opportunity to see this convergence and mutual inspiration. Sister event LivingInteriors encourages the trailblazers of the sanitaryware industry to present their models for Living in the Bathroom. Numerous well-known sanitaryware brands such as Grohe, Juma and Samsung Chemical Europe will be participating. But other areas of the international furnishing fair are devoting an unusual amount of attention to the bathroom in context with interior design too: Pure Village, for example, where different interior design assortments are exhibited next to one another in a compartmentalised, urban-like trade fair architecture to highlight the dovetailing and aesthetic interaction between furniture and lighting, home textiles, wallpapers, accessories and, of course, bathroom architecture, bathroom furniture and water-bearing products. Retailers with an interest in design, architects and planners can look forward to an unaccustomed perspective on the many components of interior design. The bathroom will also feature in the recently launched Pure Editions format in Hall 3.2, where Hansgrohe will, for example, showcase its designer brand Axor, which specialises in fittings and complete bathroom collections. In addition to its spacesculpting rc40 range, which merges the sanitary technology with the furniture system, bathroom furniture specialist Burgbad will unveil a new solution. ‘Because IMM Cologne aims to depict all aspects of interior design, it only seems natural to show the possibilities that

24

Interiors Monthly November 2013

brand-name products and modern bathroom design can open up as well,’ says Frank Haubold, IMM Cologne director, commenting on the bathroom’s ongoing development into living space that plays a relevant role in the interior design. The bathroom is also making increasingly greater demands in terms of the technical and design-related quality of its products. It is after all a place where a wide range of different product types are brought together to create a room category where we can experience the moments of intimacy and relaxation that have become so precious to us to the full. The waterproof lounge furniture, parquet and wall plaster, rain shower and fireplace all have to be reconciled with one another. The way water is being staged by means of designer fittings and lighting effects is the best example of how the upgrading of the bathroom is giving rise to new product concepts. More than anything else, however, modern bathroom design represents the way different areas of the home are merging. Like the kitchen and living room, the bathroom is growing together with the bedroom and living space to form a single unit where different functions, architectural requirements and aesthetic concepts are being adapted to one another. Why shouldn’t wood be used in the bathroom when it sets the tone in the rest of the home? And if red happens to be your favourite colour, why shouldn’t your bathtub echo your preference? If grooming is a cherished ritual, why not combine an old tradition with modern design and put a dressing table complete with washbasin in the bedroom – right next to the passage that leads to the dressing room and bathtub rotunda? Why string everything along the wall when there are such beautiful bathroom products that can be placed in the middle of the room like precious sculptures? Living doesn’t stop behind the bathroom door – so why not furnish the bathroom like the rest of the home? With sanitaryware that looks like furniture and furniture that invites you to relax. With a sauna that blends seamlessly with the interior, plenty of room for the family, a comfortable space for some sensuous moments or a stylish spot for getting together with friends. Both shows take place from 13-19 January. Visit: www.imm-cologne.com

Indonesia International Furniture Expo Jakarta

EXHIBITION GUIDE

Opening a gateway

Interiors Monthly November 2013

IFEX will allow buyers to discover Indonesian designs There is new face on the circuit of Asian furniture events: the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX). Serving as a gateway to the country’s furniture and crafts industry, IFEX provides the opportunity to discover designs inspired by the nature of Indonesia and brought to life by skilled artisans. Organised by UBM, Asia’s leading exhibition company and organiser of the Malaysian International Furniture Fair in Kuala Lumpur, Furniture China in Shanghai and Index Furniture in Mumbai, IFEX is fully supported by the Indonesian Furniture Association (AMKRI) and the Indonesian government. The 11-14 March event is positioned to integrate seamlessly into the peak season of the Asean furniture exhibition schedule, making it an unmissable stop on the regional circuit. There are two parts to the event: IFEX takes place at the JIExpo centre from 11-14 March with IFEX Woodworking, Machinery and Supply Expo at the Jakarta Convention Centre from 12-15 March. Already 80% of the exhibition space has been sold. JIExpo is Jakarta’s largest exhibition centre at more than 26,000sqm. It is located within easy reach of the Soekarno-Hatta International airport and Jakarta’s central business district. The Jakarta Convention Centre is located in the middle of the city’s business and commercial districts and is a fully integrated exhibition and convention centre. Shuttles will operate between the two venues and the airport. ‘This furniture exhibition will have a significant role in promoting Indonesian products. The furniture and handicraft sector is one of the largest in Indonesia. It is labour intensive, generates high value added products, has global competitiveness and is environmentally friendly,’ says Benny

Wahyudi, Indonesia Ministry of Industry director general. ‘The industry contributes a large portion to foreign exchange through its exports due to the availability of natural raw materials, particularly wood and rattan. The export of rattan furniture is based on natural resources and is environmentally friendly.’ Wahyudi says to achieve the export target value of furniture products, the Ministry of Industry fully supports the event. Gusmardi Bustami, Indonesia Ministry of Industry director of directorate general for national export development, explains: ‘This event could drive the economy of Indonesia, especially generating multiplier effects which is not only favourable for furniture producers and exporters but also for many related sectors. ‘Even though the world economy hasn’t recovered yet, of course we do not wait, we promote locally and overseas so when the world economy returns to normal we are ready for the international market,’ he adds. British and Irish visitors can complete a visa application on arrival at the airport. Visit: www.ifexindonesia.com

These special zones are designed to give visitors looking for fresh ideas and inspiration an initial overview of the latest innovations. From there, they can head straight to the stands to find out more. For the first time a shortlist of finalists will be chosen ahead of the show, with three designs from each category being put on display at the event before the winners are revealed on 12 January. ‘A fine hand-knotted rug is a blend of skilful craftsmanship, knowledge and awareness of tradition, individual creativity and aesthetic judgement. Occupying 19 exhibition halls, the show presents the entire portfolio for textile interior design and textile furnishings: from products for windows, upholstery, floors, walls and sun protection to textiles for the bathroom, bed and table. ‘The great response and, in particular the return of many prominent European manufacturers, shows clearly that the textile industry continues to rely on Heimtextil as a vital source of new impulses at the beginning of the year,’ says Olaf Schmidt, Messe Frankfurt vice president of textiles and textile technologies. The trend of recent years which has seen a steady increase in exhibitor numbers continues. In Hall 3.1, Chivasso, Erfurt and Zimmer+Rohde are returning after an absence. Liam Treanor’s Gottwald dining table has turned wood dowels connecting the three-panelled solid top, which are held into position by interlocking dowels that are attractively visible. The Duttmann dining bench and Schuster stool use the same technique to create an ergonomic concave surface.

James Burleigh’s InsideOut table and bench set is the first of an outdoor furniture collection for the company by Simon Pengelly. It also showed the 5.4m Osprey dining table.

Morgan made its debut at the show introducing a small chair to its 1950’s inspired Miami collection.

Northern Lighting’s Aerodrome lamp is inspired by the aerodynamic design of aeroplane turbine engines and Scandinavian design of the 1960s. It is designed to adjust the mood of the room towards a smooth coolness, the kind typical of first class airport lounges.

WINDOW COVERING Winner: Universal Textile Mills Pure silks with beautiful handmade embroidery. The silk gloss reflects a rainbow of colours that cannot be immediately defined. The embroidery is just perfect and reflects the high level of craftsmanship. Finalists: Deltracon and Texathenea

YARNS Winner: Lucchesi Giuseppe The jury praised the diversity of the entries by Italian company Lucchesi Giuseppe. Innovations in fabrics are to a large extent dependent on the development of yarns. MoOD Yarns brings together the leading suppliers and encourages them to be innovative. Finalist: Comercial Torrens

INNOVATION Winner: Gebr Munzert The textile Origami technique is reminiscent of Japanese paper-folding culture and was developed by textile designer Tobias Batrla, one of Gebr Munzert’s in-house creative team. On highly specialised jacquard looms, this novel creative fabric is made from innovative flame retardant yarns. The multidimensionality and stability of Origami offers an intelligent and design-oriented solution for many fields of application, such as window decoration and wallcoverings. Finalists: Nelen & Delbeke and Megaplast

Interiors Monthly November 2013

WALLCOVERING Winner: Flocart Flocart reveals an embroidery on non-woven, a process that must be applied in multiple steps because embroidery is fragile and difficult to handle. A lot of time and energy was put into the quest for the right solution, and the result is spectacular. The colour was applied to these wallcoverings in the final step, resulting in a natural effect. Because the non-woven can be lacquered and tumbled afterwards, a natural crackled effect can be applied, like that of broken earth. Finalists: Calcutta and Fibertex

UPHOLSTERY Winner: Albatros International Albatros’ designs show a high level of craftsmanship that was presumed lost by many. The heavy fabrics immediately demand respect as soon as you touch them. Everything about them exudes luxury and love for the profession. What’s more is the use of a lot of colour. The tender and playful gradient provides a very modern look. Finalists: De Poortere and Vigano

For those looking for a fashion statement for their floor, Vogue’s whimsical patterns and highly contrasting colours give interiors a special allure thanks to the softly woven viscose and a refined finish. Vogue’s unpredictable design is created by using space dyeing. This allows yarns with two or more colours repeated across the length of the yarns.

Granda

Pinede

Silicia There is a hint of mystery in the hand-tufted Elegance rug, and it’s all thanks to the new technology that Limited Edition has used for this trendy Eastern design. The pattern on the surface is created by sophisticated variations in the loop and cut piles. Seven colours are available: the base colour and accent colour can be chosen and the design can be changed to suit the buyer. Fringes can be included to add a soft touch to the 100% New Zealand wool rug.

Two years after it was launched, taupe has been added to Gipsy to create a more reserved and classic look besides the more striking Pompeii Red, Mosaic Blue and Imperial Purple. Gipsy is designed to appeal to patchwork lovers while the aged effect is not exaggerated. Old chenille rugs were recycled for the design, with new pieces of woven chenille added for more volume while cowhide patches provide the finishing touch. The result is an authentic Bohemian style with a contemporary feel, manufactured in Belgium according to traditional techniques.

RUGS Poolside is proof that something new and beautiful can grow from recycling in the world of carpets. Made from recycled vinyl yarns, it radiates a natural charm. The subtle mix of earthen hues and the classic weaving pattern ensure Poolside fits perfectly in its surroundings. And it can be used indoor and out thanks to its UV-resistant material.

Vintage’s weathered look gives interiors instant character without the sharp edges of a real weathered design. The satinsoft texture, the light gloss and the warm colours make this innovative rug complete. Vintage meets the demand for rugs with a satin softness and for materials with a more pronounced look. Visit: www.le.be Three colours have been added to the successful Tribu Glam line: Goldprint, Lagoon and Multicolor (pictured), providing inspiration to colour outside the lines of the rugs. Goldprint for example, is perfect for combining with wooden highlights, while Lagoon and Multicolor are welcome points of focus in sleek interiors with lots of white. Although contemporary, Tribu Glam is inspired by traditional Berber carpets.

Giving back

Karndean Designflooring is celebrating its 40th anniversary by helping others

Karndean’s Evesham showroom attracts thousands of consumers each year

Karndean Designflooring is marking its 40th anniversary with a year-long campaign to reward good causes. To kickstart the celebrations it launched its ‘40 Free Floors for 40 Good Causes’ campaign on Facebook last month. There will be 15 winners chosen from the UK, with five hand-picked by Karndean and 10 selected from Facebook nominations. The first three floors will be donated to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Dogs Trust and Pitmaston Primary School, Worcestershire. The 40 good causes will also feature 15 winners from the USA and 10 from Australia and New Zealand. Inspired by Smokey, Karndean founder Mike Walker’s 130lb Great Dane – who is still present on Karndean’s logo – Karndean is showing further support for Dogs Trust by donating £1 for every Facebook ‘like’, pledging to raise £5,000 by the end of the year. ‘Our 40th anniversary is a massive achievement and we’re extremely proud of where we started and where we are today. And what better way to celebrate than by giving back to our customers and helping a variety of excellent causes,’ says Paul Barratt, Karndean md. Walker founded the company as a flooring distributor, but he

LVT wanted to introduce something different to the vinyl flooring industry. ‘He wanted a floor that was unique, a floor that was bespoke, personal and affordable: a Karndean floor,’ says Steve Curry, Karndean global product manager. One of the early ranges, Knight Tile, is still among the company’s bestsellers. It was refreshed last year, and the introduction of new formats and textured finishes on woods resulted in a huge uptake in POS and resulting sales for Karndean stockists. It moved into the premium arena seven years ago with Art Select and is due to update the range early next year with three new parquet colours in the wood collection and 15 colours in the new Art Select Stones collection. Karndean LooseLay will also see 10 additional decors, including a highly distressed grey and two slate designs. ‘We agonise over the designs, colours, textures, and formats, it’s painstaking,’ says Curry. ‘But this is where we really add value, and maintain the popularity of our products with retailers and consumers alike. As specialists in LVT we’re concentrating on just one product: it’s important to maintain quality in the sector.’ And while the company celebrates its history, it is also looking forward with the launch of an augmented reality app for iPads and iPhones that allows customers to see what floor design works best in their room and view laying angles. ‘For stockists there is new state of the art POS, incorporating lighter sample boards, and an additional compact design table including a screen for viewing the Karndean website and showing off the retailer’s own installations, and larger images that really show the detail of the floors,’ says Curry. ‘Compared to the original products, today’s designs have a lot more texture and higher quality of the natural look in varying formats, but there remains the entrepreneurial spirit and energy that Karndean had from the beginning that allows us to maintain a proactive approach to developing products which meet the trends in today’s flooring market,’ Curry adds. WOOD AND LAMINATE

In tune with tradition Natural surfaces are a feature of Kährs’ latest floors Kährs has added two wood floor collections to its bestselling Original Range. Both the Founders and Harmony Collections include a variety of on-trend designs, offered at different price points and each featuring a combination of hand-crafted finishing treatments. The Founders Collection is a celebration of Kährs’ Swedish tradition and includes six oak designs. Each floor is named after a member of the Kährs’ family, which founded the company in 1857, and is crafted from sustainable European timber. The exclusive designs include Oak Fredrik, Gustaf, Olof, Sture, Johan and Ulf, with colour tones ranging from pale cream with white and grey highlights to nut brown.

64

Interiors Monthly November 2013

Each board measures 2,420mm x 187mm x 15mm and has an individuallytoned Nature oil pre-finish. Heavy brushing, hand-scraping and smoking emphasise the grained timber and tactile finish, while a distinct bevelled edge complements the single plank format. The Harmony Collection also reflects the key trend for rustic natural surfaces with subtle design features, offering 14 sustainable designs in an economical three-strip format. Throughout the collection, handbrushing techniques are used to remove pulpy softwood to expose natural graining and annual rings, which reinforce the natural look. Some designs are bevelled and smoked to add further

distinction, and each floor benefits from a durable, easy-care matt lacquer or oil prefinish. Colour options span from white Ash Alabaster to ebony-toned Oak Lava and all boards measure 2,424mm x 196mm/200mm x 15mm. Floors from both collections feature Kährs ethical, high performance construction. Based on Kährs original design, patented in 1941, all floors use sustainable hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing timber below. All are finished with water-based stains and solvent-free finishes and can be laid on most dry, level surfaces and over underfloor heating systems. Kährs, tel: 023 9245 3045

Ambition and skill

Burgess Beds has both and winning an NBF award has opened more doors If it’s bed related, Andy Jackson, Burgess Beds md, will have an opinion about it and won’t be slow in letting you know what it is. Having spent decades in the industry, owned Burgess Beds for 12 years and winning the National Bed Federation Manufacturer of the Year award, they are opinions worth listening to (ask him about spring counts if you have a spare hour or two). But it is the winning of this year’s award that is still occupying Jackson’s thoughts. Weeks after Gyles Brandreth announced the name Burgess Beds at The Bed Show’s gala dinner (see p72), he still can’t believe it. ‘I was listening to details about the winner being read out and I thought hang on, that sounds like us. I couldn’t believe it when we were announced and everybody cheered,’ he says. Jackson was so overcome that he sent his daughter, Jodi Schofield, Burgess Beds sales director, to collect the coveted award. ‘I was shaking. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get there,’ he says. Burgess Beds may be a small company, compared with the more-well known

66

Interiors Monthly November 2013

‘We’ve got scope for growth… we’ll keep being unique and giving people what they want’ companies it triumphed over in the NBF awards – turnover is approaching £2m – but it’s not short of ambition. Sales have increased by 25% in each of the past two years and Alan Brown, former Slumberland Group chief executive and colleague of Jackson’s, has come out of retirement to become non-executive director. While Jackson admits that its UK distribution has only begun to scratch the surface, he can reel off a list of overseas customers as he checks the mattresses awaiting delivery. Winning the award has opened doors for Burgess Beds, attracting the interest of retailers across the country

and it is recruiting its first sales representative for the North of England. The company’s success is built on its flexibility and that all its mattresses are handmade. The pride in his staff is obvious as he talks to them on the factory floor, where an automated conveyor system is due to be installed. The increase in sales has enabled the company to increase its workforce, recruiting unemployed former bed or furniture industry people. The staff are on salaries, not piece rates and this becomes clear as you watch them put the bases and mattresses together. ‘See, proper side-stitching,’ Jackson remarks. All of Burgess Beds’ mattresses are pocket-sprung, apart from one open coil model designed by founder Harry Burgess in 1927: ‘I don’t want to end it, I’m superstitious,’ says Jackson. ‘Every mattress from the Signature Range has completely natural fillings and all the ticking is 100% organic Soil Association approved woven cotton made in England, as are the springs. The wool and fillings are also sourced from British companies.

BEDS AND BEDROOM Aphrodite bedstead with Binary 3000 mattress

‘We’re constantly developing new products and using fun but practical fabrics to show that the bed does not have to be the last thing people think of when decorating their bedrooms. Because of our approach to this our bespoke service continues to go from strength to strength.’ Mattresses take two to three weeks to produce, ‘but if they need it in two days we’ll do it in two days,’ while highly bespoke requests can take four to five weeks, he says. Schofield is largely responsible for selecting the 20 fabrics on offer, and creating more contemporary looks such as the crystal encrusted Diamante bed. The company, which holds a Manufacturing Guild Mark, also uses its staff’s upholstery skills with a range of headboards, including diamond buttoned and pleated designs. It is the ability to combine the mattress, divan and headboard options in-house that gives Burgess Beds its USP. So what next? ‘Investment,’ Jackson replies. ‘The showroom is being revamped, we’re recruiting, investing in the factory and will become even greener. We’ve got lots of scope for growth, especially with the award but we’ll keep being unique and keep giving people what they want.’ Visit: www.burgessbeds.co.uk

The bed industry enjoyed a chuckle at our expense in the run up to the Telford Show, when our toned physiques, beautifully enhanced by the colourful lycra jumpsuits, leapt from the pages of the trade press in our retro sci-fi themed adverts. Some scoffed at our use of science fiction to promote our products, suggesting we should stick to facts.

SCI-FI? THE FACTS at

Fact is, we were using the retro sci-fi theme to illustrate how the bed industry seems to cling on to the ‘futuristic’ technology of memory foam, despite it being invented around a half a century ago, while Sealy embraces true cutting-edge technologies such as Geltex and Adaptive in it’s stunning Hybrid Collection.

And what’s so wrong with using Sci-fi to promote our products anyway? Science fiction has a long history of not only reflecting our world but predicting the future. Jules Verne dreamed of submarines and space travel back in the 1800’s. Adolus Huxley predicted test tube babies in his Brave New World in the 1930’s and what were Kirk and Spock communicating with each other back in the Sixties if it wasn’t precursors to mobile phones? Sealy has always been ahead of the game when it comes to bed technology and will continue this trend well into the future. In the meantime, why not try our Hybrid beds. We’ve seen the future...

Going continental Velda’s Multisense offers comfort and style Velda’s latest Multisense range of beds and mattresses showcases the level of craftsmanship and passion for producing top quality beds among the Belgian firm’s workforce. ‘Using decades of experience it is committed to using the best materials and technologies in the market. Since its introduction into the UK in the late 1990s, Velda has been well known for its high quality adjustable beds. But while the adjustable bed range is still a key part of the business, sales of its luxurious ranges of pocket sprung mattresses and boxspring beds are growing fast,’ says Adrian Eyre, Velda UK Agent. ‘Multisense has had a great reception, with its Continental look and styling becoming more popular in the UK and with Velda’s high level of craftsmanship and tailoring we have a great product,’ he says. The range features a seven zoned pocket sprung sleep system, using three different gauges of wire to provide the correct ergonomic support, while inner tufting ensures all the fillings are securely held in place, but without having the tufts on the surface of the mattress. This allows Velda to use a deep quilted cover that provides a luxurious finish to the mattress. The sprung base provides support for the pocket sprung mattresses: in combination they offer a great feel and high

comfort level. Customers can personalise their bed with a wide choice of fabrics, leg options and headboards. It can be difficult to differentiate products when displayed in lines in stores, but Velda offers a range of POS to support the Multisense collection. ‘It is important that the display in-store reflects the quality of the product, so we supply a wide range of POS and even bespoke studios for the stores to maximise sales and ensure that Velda is at the front of the consumer’s mind when purchasing a new bed,’ adds Eyre. Bensons for Beds retained its Multiple Bed Retailer of the Year award at the National Bed Federation Bed Show gala dinner, while The Bed Chambers was named Independent Bed Retailer of the Year and Archers Sleepcentre gained the Bed Etailer of the Year award. The awards were announced by broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at The Bed Show’s gala dinner at the Telford International Centre. After another progressive year, the judges decided that Bensons for Beds was a worthy winner of Multiple Bed Retailer of the Year for the second year running. The company continued to set the benchmark among multiple retailers for the in-store experience and Bensons

Special mentions were given to Land of Beds in Cheshire, last year’s winner, and Bold Street Beds of Preston. But the winner this year is The Bed Chambers in Retford, Nottinghamshire, a real inspiration to other independents. With an enthusiastic owner, the judges said, The Bed Chambers has an inventive approach to marketing that has continued to develop over the past year, with celebrity appearances, customer feedback, loyalty cards, online reviews and social media, all of which has led to growth in the business.

The Bed Etailer of the Year award went to Archers Sleepcentre – which proved it is possible for a small, traditional, regional independent retailer to adapt and respond to the structural change taking place in the retail sector. It has built a sizeable online business that has taken it into the national arena and is able to compete on an equal footing with large chains and early stage ventures that are focused largely on top line growth alone. This was a strongly contested category and the judges singled out two further entries as highly commended: World Stores, which is flourishing within this new business environment and, again, Land of Beds, which has shown how it

Manufacturing handmade bespoke beds since 1927, Burgess Beds proved you do not have to be the largest company in a sector to be innovative and succeed and claim the top spot as Manufacturer of the Year. The company was praised for making great inroads internationally through its growing export business, building on its environmental policy, and its passion for constantly improving – right down to small things such as a car share scheme. innovative ways. Well done to our winners,’ says Stuart Hibbert, NBF president. ‘The awards have really grown in momentum over the past three years and the categories are becoming hotly contested fields with results in several categories being very close – a reason why we’ve got several highly commendeds this year,’ he adds. The winners were chosen by an independent panel comprising Andrew Kidd, Interiors Monthly editor; Richard de Melim, Furnishing Report editor; Paul Farley, Furniture News editor; George Cooper, Cabinet Maker editor and Jonny Westbrooke, clerk of The Furniture Makers.

Sleeping beautifully The cream of British beds was again on show. Visit: www.bedshow.co.uk The Bed Show once again brought together the best of British and Irish bed manufacturing, firmly planting its place on the exhibition calendar with its fourth event. Breasley combined Viscool with pocket springs for its Salus Couture range. Viscool, developed in Spain, is exclusive to the company in the UK. The foam contains soya oil and balm and has an open coil structure for reduced sleeping temperatures. Three models are available. It also introduced a collection of large headboards.

Burgess Beds showed off its Boadicea, using the same fillings as its top of the range model but with a lower spring count and an ottoman storage bed. From Shire Beds was a collection of headboards and bases with an emphasis on brighter colours and it also refreshed its entry-level mattresses. Siesta revamped its Kyoto brand with a new headboard range, Balmoral twoaction sofabed, Avon clic-clac sofabed and an updated logo. Stuart Jones introduced new fabrics, five chairs, a chaise longue

and an upholstered bed. Sweet Dreams unveiled its largest combined launch, including 15 pocket sprung models and three upholstered models and sofabeds. Vi-Spring debuted the Dartington mattress, with 1,326 springs (double), upholstered with 1kg per sqm of bonded British wool and cotton, 600g per sqm of wool and overlaid with 1.2kg per sqm of wool and cotton. It is available in four spring tensions. Vogue Beds upgraded specifications of its models and fabrics.

According to Chris Ward, Hypnos marketing director, the show was a success for Hypnos and gave it the opportunity to meet customers and show them its latest ranges – the Royal Comfort Collection and the new generation of the Heritage Collection. ‘We were thrilled to see that Royal Comfort, which is our most premium, luxury bed to date, was extremely popular at the show,’ he says. Inspired by the designs and specifications from Hypnos’ Royal archives and Royal commissions, the handcrafted beds are made using the finest fabrics chosen by Sanderson, a royally appointed British fabric house. ‘This partnership with Sanderson is a company first for Hypnos and its stylish fabrics have helped us to create a comfortable, luxurious bed with the wow factor, which really stood out at the show,’ says Ward. ‘Further to this, the show confirmed that our new Heritage Collection, which features classic beds that have been updated with new design details and new comfort specifications, is truly

unique in its feel and continues to be a firm favourite with retailers. ‘Overall the show was a huge success for Hypnos providing us with invaluable

Sealy showed off its six-strong collection of Hybrid beds, a fusion of the elastic gel and breathable foam Geltex with specially designed springs. The top layer of breathable gel offers users anatomically correct support, comprehensive hygienic protection and no sweating or shivering. Under this are layers of nearly 3,000 mini and full pocket springs, zoned to support the spine and heavier and lighter parts of the body. The coil is a two-stage design: the upper part of the spring is softer and conforming for contouring comfort, while the lower part of the spring is firmer for deep down support, and each spring is individually encased to minimise motion transfer. In addition to Sealy’s Smart Fibres, the ticking for the Hybrid beds is a new type of flexible, stretchy soft mattress covering that contains Adaptive, a treatment that changes passive textiles to textiles with a dynamic response to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. Adaptive reuses the heat of the body to boost moisture wicking, moisture evaporation and cooling, to keep the sleeper and the mattress cool and dry. Adaptive treated mattress ticking works through the bed sheets and/or mattress protector as long as the textile

layers have a good breathability. ‘We had an outstanding show with a huge amount of interest shown by all the visitors to our stand and the new Hybrid bed range. We surpassed all our targets for sales and new accounts and are now busy trying to catch up with customers who weren’t able to get to Telford but who have heard about the new beds and

want to know more about them,’ says Neil Robinson, Sealy marketing director. ‘We are supporting this launch with a major promotional campaign to the public so retailers will hopefully be seeing lots of customer requests to try out these new beds over the upcoming months and into 2014,’ he adds Sealy, tel: 01697 320 342

BEDS AND BEDROOM Airsprung Beds: ‘As changes in our market dynamics have emerged, so too have innovative solutions from Airsprung Beds,’ says Tony Lisanti, Airsprung Group ceo. ‘The stand was designed to display our defined position in the marketplace as the go-to brand for online and home shopping retailers. Our enhanced range and offer was well received by retailers and the forum was a great platform for us to demonstrate the benefits of a complete end to end manufacturing and home delivery package, as well as the practical day-to-day website support we can offer. The relaunch of the children’s Billy (left) and Emma (below) trundle bed excited many retailers.’ Visit: www.airsprungbeds.co.uk

Hush From Airsprung: ‘Designed to be an extension to the established Airsprung range, we presented our new offer – Hush from Airsprung. Not only does this give retailers something truly original to market, but also enables them to utilise the tested benefits of swift production and home delivery. The new product formats from Hush from Airsprung gives retailers access to popular features such as luxury memory foam, superior pocket springs, sophisticated zoned systems and materials rich in wool and cotton,’ says Lisanti. ‘Our new ViVo rolled pocket mattress impressed retailers with its comfort and the value it represented when offered on a next day delivery. The Pocket Contour system (right) is a new development for Airsprung. The key difference between this and the other, more familiar zoning solutions is that the zones work perfectly with the shape of the body. More importantly, they are so discreet that there is generally no awareness of zoning, meaning that the bed is extremely comfortable without being too conspicuously zoned.’ Visit: www.hush-collection.com

Hush-a-Bye: ‘Hush-a-Bye introduced the Options range that offers retailers over 40 different SKUs from just a couple of placements on their floors. With retail space at a premium and every inch so precious, this new concept really struck a chord with so many of our retailers. Not only was it important to get the product right but this concept needed, and will have, attractive in-store POS to back it up. ‘In addition to Options, we refreshed our two bestselling models: Cambridge and Westbourne. The Dreamnight label was launched offering our retailers a value range of products but with the standard of quality and service they have come to expect from the Hush-a-Bye stable. The range is available with a choice of base colours and complementary headboards that make them hugely appealing to everdemanding consumers who are looking at the bed as a piece of furniture to fit in with their bedroom design’, says Lisanti. Pictured is Ortho Supreme. Visit: www.hushabyebeds.co.uk

Gainsborough Beds: ‘We launched a range at the show from our Natural Collection and also a promotional trio under the Windsor Bed Company, which we received so much positive response to, resulting in our best launch for many years. The Natural Collection is a range of handmade beds using the finest quality materials and loose upholstery to produce beds of the highest order. A range of new bases in pastel colours was added to the existing swatch, further enhancing the offer. Our new collection of headboards completed the transition from last year’s range and the efforts the team has put in over the past months was rewarded by the number of people we met with and orders taken during the show,’ says Lisanti. Pictured is Lancaster. Visit: www.gainsborough-beds.co.uk

Gainsborough Sofa Beds: ‘The main focus at the show in this area was our award-winning Sofa Bed Choice collection, which was launched in April. The response was fantastic with many retailers commenting that it was the most interesting thing they had seen at the show. With innovative product development and marketing material, including an interactive website, the whole package gave retailers something they can’t find anywhere else in sofabeds. We also introduced our first clic-clac sofabed and we were extremely pleased with the resulting sales. This is a product that will be permanently stocked to provide quick delivery,’ says Lisanti.
