EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

It’s show time again Being able to be in two places at once, perfecting human cloning or owning a time machine would be handy this month, with a packed show calendar If it is new products you are after, then September is your month – the diary is bursting with exhibitions clamouring for attention. Be it The Flooring Show, Decorex, The Bed Show, 100% Design, Home, Long Point, Focus, Top Drawer, Design Junction, Maison & Objet, MoOD or Tent London/Super Brands, September is a month that provides retailers with an almost infinite opportunity to discover new products and suppliers. And with further anecdotal evidence suggesting that more shoppers were returning to furniture and flooring stores in the first half of August (even if the Bank Holiday was a letdown for many) show

organisers will be hoping for an upturn in visitor numbers. Although the number of events makes September a hectic affair personally, I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the new Wool Trends Centre at The Flooring Show (not to mention the sight of a flock of sheep outside the entrance). Hopefully I’ll see you at some of the exhibitions. August also saw plenty of corporate activity. DFS added Dwell to its portfolio, having previously acquired Sofa Workshop (see page 12) as it looks for younger customers that it hasn’t been able to attract to its core stores. I suspect the deal won’t be the last. Equally interesting was the decision by the Business Growth Fund – set up to help small and medium-sized companies grow – invest some of its £2.5bn of funds in the interiors sector (see page 6). Its investment in Furniture Village will allow the chain to do things it has wanted to do more quickly than it otherwise would have been able to do, and BGF’s approach means management won’t be under pressure to deliver quick profits at the expense of long-term objectives.

NEWS

Cash injection to speed up Furniture Village growth Furniture Village has secured a multi-million pound investment from the Business Growth Fund. The £6m boost will allow the chain to add to its 40 stores while investing in its technology so that its in-store customer experience is enhanced alongside the company’s ecommerce platform. BGF was established in 2011 to help Britain’s growing smaller and medium sized businesses. Backed by five of the UK’s main banking groups – Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, RBS and Standard Chartered – BGF is an independent company with up to £2.5bn with which to make long-term equity investments. Peter Harrison, Furniture Village co-founder and chief executive, says it is an ideal time for the business to expand its physical store count and online presence. ‘We are appreciative of BGF’s support and confidence, and beyond the many other potential benefits that will arise from our new and close association, this substantial investment will enable us to accelerate our plans and for Furniture Village to remain at the forefront of British retail in its sector,’ he says. Without the investment the chain would have had to wait a long time to do things such as launch a mobile website and increase the size of some stores, says Harrison. The Hove branch is being expanded by 4,000sqft to 20,000sqft

Md in the wings Upholstery maker Collins & Hayes has confirmed that Matt O’Flynn will become md when Martin Huggins retires. No date has been set for the handover but it is expected to be before the end of the year, according to the Airsprung Group subsidiary. Former Meadowmead head of product development and sales, O’Flynn left Meadowmead, owner of the Henderson Russell, John Sankey and Barton Furniture brands, in May.

Asda bags Sleepwell Asda is to be the exclusive stockist of Slumberdown’s new Sleepwell signature collection, available in-store from September. The launch of the luxury Sleepwell range marks a significant departure for the brand as it seeks to widen its appeal with a premium offer.

6

Interiors Monthly September 2014

Furniture Village is looking to add more stores and three others have been identified for expansion. As part of the deal, BGF senior investment manager Jon Simon will join the board to oversee the bank-backed fund’s minority stake. ‘This represents an exciting opportunity to BGF to back a well-known British brand with a strong heritage and track record of profitability. We are supporting a clear growth strategy based on selective store roll-out and investment in new software. This in turn will improve the operational efficiencies of the business and increase the focus on ecommerce,’ he says.’ The chain is also introducing a new logo as part of its efforts to attract shoppers aged under 45.

Bank Holiday disappoints The August Bank Holiday was a washout for many shopping areas, with the weather helping to push footfall down by 14.5%. Unexpected sunshine on Saturday and Sunday failed to draw shoppers to the high street for the last long weekend of the summer with footfall company Springboard recording a 7.3% drop on the high street – falling for a sixth consecutive year in a row – and a fall of 6.3% in shopping centres. With most opting for a frugal weekend, pre pay day, shopping centres lagged behind on Saturday and Sunday recording a drop in footfall of 4.0% on Saturday and 2.4% on Sunday. A drizzly start to Bank Holiday Monday did not offer any motivation to shoppers to venture out either. Over the period up to 12pm footfall dropped by 14.5% showing signs that this Bank Holiday

Monday echoed the trend of the previous two years when footfall fell by 10% in 2012 and 2013. It was a brighter outlook for out-oftown retail parks, which fared the best, with shoppers living up to the great British tradition of stocking up on DIY goods. Retail footfall stood at 1.9% on Saturday, dipping slightly on Sunday to 1.3%. ‘Falling just before pay day and with the bleak trends over the past five years it was, as we expected, another tough trading weekend for retailers. While we saw some positive results from smaller shopping centres, retail parks continue to triumph over the high street and shopping centres drawing people out with the convenience of parking, cafes and goods for those all important DIY projects,’ says Diane Wehrle, Springboard retail and insights director.

Lebus brings in a night shift to boost production Lebus Upholstery is to significantly swell its workforce by introducing a night shift to meet demand. The Scunthorpe company is to create 80 jobs, pushing employee numbers to almost 500. ‘We have seen significant growth in sales from £20m to potentially £33m for the current year. We have steadily recruited staff over the past three years from 300 in 2011 to over 400 now. We are looking to recruit 80 employees for the next expansion. We are planning a full second shift so we can maximise use of the existing plant,’ says Darrell Bettany, Lebus finance director. The new shift, to start in November, would run from 4pm to 12.45am, from Monday to Thursday and from 2.35pm to 9.55pm on Friday. Jobs on offer at Lebus include machinists, upholsterers, frame assemblers, wood mill operatives, foam operatives, fabric cutters and sorters and administration staff. The company expects to see production increase from 1,400 orders a week to 1,700. ‘We have enjoyed successful growth with existing customers and added some new key accounts in the last

Lebus’s Padstow

year which has really driven the added growth. As we run into the seasonally busy period leading up to Christmas and the New Year sales, we are having to put measures in place to cope with the anticipated increase in output,’ adds Bettany.

WBH assets to be sold

More space for Cormar Cormar Carpets has opened its expanded Holme Mill site to further improve stock availability and service to customers, with space for almost 800 rolls of carpet. The warehousing space was opened by Betty Cormack, Cormar chairman (pictured), increasing the storage area for unbacked carpet. The £900,000 warehouse provides an extra 41,744sqft of floorspace with racking for up to 791 unbacked rolls: the equivalent of 300,000sqm of carpet. There is also the option to double stockholding capacity in the future. ‘The extension is another significant step in future-proofing our operations, ensuring we continue to efficiently handle the high volume growth levels we’ve enjoyed in the past few years. It puts us in a better position to drive improvements in service to our customers,’ says Paul Murphy, Cormar production manager.

8

The administrator of Woodberry Bros and Haines has hired a sales company to dispose of the failed cabinet company’s assets. Since its appointment on 2 July, PricewaterhouseCoopers has not found a buyer for WBH, so has recruited ES Group to sell the remaining stock, machinery and production lines. There will be three separate sales to realise the optimum value for the assets, says Simon Cornelius-Light, divisional director in ES Group’s Machinery & Business Assets team for the South West. A sale of the company’s product stock began last month, along with a private treaty sale for the 12 main production lines. An online auction of the

Caxton’s Rubix

wider plant and equipment will conclude in early November with a large quantity of woodworking machinery among the lots being put under the hammer. ‘By marketing the assets to different groups of potential buyers and via different means, some with an international reach, we hope to realise the maximum possible sum,’ he adds.

Associated Weavers Sales: 01422 431100 Email: salesuk@awe.be

The StainAway Collection is a major success story, with retailers really getting behind the ranges taking the advantage that consumer confidence is high. We’ve worked hard to make sure we deliver a full portfolio of options to cover every buying decision. This year we have not only introduced new colours to the established popular ranges Temptation, Monterey, Santorini and Everest but also introduced several new ranges to complete the Stainaway offer. In 2014, we’ve already lined up competitive newcomers Home Twist, Imperial Twist and Tuftex Boutique and in addition further strong contenders in Stainaway Ultra, Inspire, Distinction and now Stainaway Tweed.

Winning with British wool The fashion for wool is expected to fare well this Autumn and our Calder Wool collection has it covered top to bottom including the smart sophistication of the well established Park Lane Collection, through to the delicate natural softness of Cashmere Berber and the affordable luxury of High Point Twist and Lonsdale Twist. Proven best selling colours, multi-width options and top quality performance characterise the quality of our wool collection. DFS adds Dwell to its portfolio Upholstery and cabinet chain DFS has completed the purchase of Dwell as it targets ‘younger, more urban customers’. DFS invested in the firm in February after Dwell founder Aamir Ahmad had bought the chain out of administration in July 2013. The two chains will continue to be run separately with ownership creating ‘mutually beneficial opportunities for both companies’. ‘We’re delighted to bring Dwell into the DFS group. It is a strong, contemporary brand with strengths that complement DFS’s offering,’ says Ian Filby, DFS ceo. Although DFS has more than a quarter of the upholstery market, ‘there is always room for us to attract new customers and we hope to work with Dwell to

reach younger, more urban consumers who we haven’t traditionally targeted.’ Ahmad says: ‘This is great news. The management team has always believed in the potential of the brand and with DFS as our parent company we can fully embrace and accelerate new growth opportunities.’ DFS bought Sofa Workshop last October to provide the opportunity to reach new customer segments. Meanwhile the chain is set to strengthen its direct and online marketing after appointing a permanent agency. In recent years it has used different agencies on a project-by-project basis. Karmarama will handle the chain’s direct marketing, data analytics, content strategy and delivery from September.

Serene warehouse boost Bed supplier Serene Furnishings is to boost its warehouse capacity by more than a quarter. The West Midlands company is to add 35,300sqft to its West Bromwich premises, increasing it to more than 158,300sqft. ‘We are continuing to grow across all areas of the business, with some truly exciting developments currently under wraps – we feel very confident about the next few years. Through our portfolio we have something for each of the recognised pricepoints, in a wide choice of material, finish and style. This is set to be added to even further with a series of inspired new arrivals and announcements set to be unveiled in 2015,’ says Tasleem Tasab, Serene founder.

Farewell to carpet designer Gavin Hamilton Renowned carpet designer Gavin Hamilton has died, aged 90. Hamilton was born in Rutherglen, Glasgow in 1923, the youngest of eight children. He excelled at art, technical drawing and woodwork at school but left with no formal qualifications. From a young age he had dreamed of working at Templeton’s Carpets in Glasgow. Despite discouragement

12

Interiors Monthly September 2014

throughout his school years his flair shone through and he started at the iconic factory in April 1940. He won a sponsored bursary to study at the Glasgow School of Art and through this he travelled to Paris then London to continue his studies. Two of his Chinese illustrations still adorn the dining room of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

He moved to Templeton’s London office in the early 1950s as a contract designer. There, he designed carpets for Cunard, Canadian Pacific Shipping and P&O. He also produced designs for 10 Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, the House of Lords and Marlborough House. In recent years his health declined, and he passed away on 21 July, four months short of his 91st birthday.

Your questions answered

The Hilton

Helen Kershaw, Guardsman head of marketing, answers your questions on product protection

3+1+1 From ÂŁ4 95 + VAT

Access to spare parts can be essential in many scenarios

Manufacturers of the original Hilton design

Q

We had a long-running problem with our previous warranty provider which eventually saw us terminate our contract with it. A customer had an issue with a recliner which was covered by his warranty but, after several months, despite constant assurances from the provider, the required spare part never turned up. We had given our customer an ex-display model while all of this went on and in the end we had to let him choose another model. We would like to be able to offer our customers the piece of mind of a warranty: what processes does Guardsman have in place regarding spare parts and keeping me informed during this process? During the recent economic downturn retailers have accelerated programmes of supplementing their domestic supply chain with Far East manufacturing. This, along with ever shortening product lifecycles, has indeed made it increasingly difficult to have reliable and consistent supply of parts for the furniture that we have to support for up to five years after the purchase date. To deal with this issue Guardsman has needed to adapt to ensure we continue to offer great value in the service we provide. As part of this we ensure that our technicians carry a wide stock of all the most common motion and modular furniture spares and accessories on their vans, so we can make a successful repair on the first visit. We further support this through agreements with industry partners and specialist importers whereby we can source, via next day delivery, the vast majority of electronic and mechanised items. For the more challenging bespoke or design specific parts, our head office team is skilled at working with manufacturers and retailers to source parts. However, it is most important that we communicate to consumers that these parts take longer to order as they are specially made and sourced from all over the world.

Heavyweight in innovation Balta Broadloom is celebrating its 50th anniversary As Balta Broadloom celebrates its 50th anniversary, the launch of its Big Hit collection gives retailers a chance to join the celebrations with a striking display folder holding four designs: Goal, Ace, Eagle and Strike. With chunky loop styles in Balta’s StainSafe yarn and equipped with Texflor backing for a spring in the step, the collection is designed to pull no punches. ‘The quartet encompasses a range of looks, including heather and berber effects, and in a palette of natural shades that will work no matter what the decor, making Big Hit an ideal go-to collection for retailers that never throw in the towel. Backed by a 10-year StainSafe warranty and with the ability to be cleaned with diluted bleach, this carpet heavyweight delivers excellent value,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Group marketing director. ‘We are really confident that Big Hit provides a neatly packaged collection of textured and patterned carpet, so felt that its POS should reflect this, remaining impressively flexible, portable and easy for retailers to pick up and sell from.’ Vanden Bossche reckons it provides a good talking point that allows people to get close to the carpets. ‘With Big Hit we’ve brought the popularity of chunky loop styles in a carpet that makes the most of modern generation stain resistant fibres and Balta Broadloom’s legendary value and service levels: an ideal combination,’ he says. Through the past 50 years and since its days as a small family-owned carpet producer, it is innovation and value such as that represented in the Big Hit collection that has seen Balta Broadloom become one of the leading manufacturers in Europe. Founded in 1964, but with origins dating back to 1959, the Balta Group’s approach to product development and manufacturing innovation has seen the company increase its turnover to more than €600m with 10 manufacturing plants worldwide. ‘Surprisingly, for a manufacturer that

22

Interiors Monthly September 2014

Big Hit Ace

was the first to produce polypropylene carpets, the Balta name has never really been associated with consumer brands, with the company instead using brands such as StainSafe, Imprel and most recently Crown Floors, to deliver its innovation to homes across Europe,’ explains Vanden Bossche. ‘Our strength has been in innovation and people, affectionately known as Batezers. Under the watch of the highly experienced Hendrik Deruyck, Balta is truly a world force in carpet production.’ For retailers looking to Balta Broadloom for products that can help them to gain a competitive advantage,

the manufacturer’s roadshow has become a key event, giving a unique and exclusive insight into product developments for the forthcoming year. Providing access to 2015 collections that the rest of the industry won’t see until January, this October’s Birmingham roadshow is an invite-only event that promises to be a key opportunity to plan and strategise for the year ahead. ‘With these continued efforts from one of the world’s largest carpet producers, it’s no wonder that Balta Broadloom retailers always feel one step ahead of the competition,’ adds Vanden Bossche. 34

Interiors Monthly September 2014

The light tonal greys and contrasting warm, dark brown hues of the new slate inspired stone designs are designed to look great in both traditional and modern interiors. New for 2014, Series Two introduces the company’s first textile stone designs in a modern linear pattern for a distinctive modern look. Designed with convenience and style in mind, LooseLay is an innovative format of luxury vinyl flooring that’s not only quick and easy to install but simple to maintain. Offering superior fitting times, LooseLay’s friction grip backing and increased dimensional stability secures the floor firmly in place with little or no adhesive required in many installations. tiles, combined with the fact that it is quick and easy to fit, means reduced downtime and installation costs. It can be installed over most hard floors as long as they are smooth, sound and dust-free. ‘We’re delighted to be returning to The Flooring Show, especially as we continue mark our 40th anniversary at the forefront of the industry,’ says Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring retail sales director. ‘Following a successful and busy year so far, it’s certainly a great time for us to make a stand at this year’s show with our innovative LooseLay. Mrs Brown visited several interiors stores and after much consideration has ordered her new sideboard from you. The day of delivery arrives and unfortunately during the delivery the sideboard is dropped. It is OK but Mrs Brown’s living room floor has a nasty scratch on it. Understandably she is far from happy and you have a bill for repairing her floor. Situations such as this can be avoided if Stroolmount’s range of flooring protection products are used, says Gill Finch, Stroolmount md. ‘Retailers are finding that prevention is by far the best policy and realising that for very little money they can prevent unwanted claims while improving customer service. They can also offer the protectors to their customers,’ she says. Stroolmount’s range features products for protecting carpets, vinyl, wood, laminate and tiles. At the heart of the range is the QuickClick Glides collection of products, developed by German firm Wagner Systems. These are permanently screwed to the base of legs and are available in sizes from 17mm to 50mm and in several pack sizes. Also available are Move It pads to protect floors and make it easier to move heavy furniture and appliances. ‘We’re delighted to be returning to Harrogate, where our new wobble wedge will be making its show debut,’ adds Finch. customers can choose a bespoke bedroom set that will be hand-made to their taste. This year there are also two value-engineered bed bases, ottoman and divan. The Pocket Spring Air Suspension System is the centrepiece of Sweet Dreams’ array of launches. Comprising one standard length pocket spring and then, in the next column, two shortened springs, so between the shortened springs there’s air space, allowing for a soft, flexible feel as the sleeper lies down and the short springs contract, increasing the volume of air. The two kinds of pocket spring are arranged alternately across the width of the mattress. The system is designed to create a lighter-than-air sleeping

experience while also providing comfortable, cool support. Two people sleeping together, no matter what their weight difference, will enjoy individual support because of the alignment of the springs, according to the company. With almost 4,000 springs in the larger sizes of the top-end model, the mattress boasts more pocket springs than a Sweet Dreams bed has ever featured before. The extra luxury of the beds is enhanced with a superior number of both handles and vents. The show coincides with the start of Vogue Beds’ 25th anniversary and to celebrate it has improved every product in the flagship Hampton range including the addition of a 7,000 pocket mattress. Sealy is promising to unveil what it calls ‘a dramatic and groundbreaking new range, which could radically change the industry’ at the show. Contour Support will be the first bed in the Profile collection. Ergonomic in concept, the Contour Support mattress is based on various anthropometric studies that detail and profile the proportions of the human anatomy. Directional and variable zoning along its length from head to toe means the mattress never has to be turned, and the mattress pays special attention to offering exactly the right kind of support to shoulders and hips, which are the key pressure points that cause tossing and turning. In addition, an area of increased lumbar support ensures the spine is kept at the right alignment throughout the night. With its high loft, quilted panels, this bed is suitable for anyone suffering from a problem back or wishing to prevent one deteriorating, according to the company.

The Sealy Posturepedic range has been updated, upgraded and relaunched, and will now include a Geltex model and include Adaptive in the Smart Fibres offering. The four bed range, with high loft design for fuller and more luxurious mattresses, will consist of Geltex Support, Luxury Support, Memory Support and Latex Support and will replace the existing Silver, Gold and Platinum Posturepedic beds. The Hybrid range of beds, launched last year at Telford, has become Sealy UK’s most successful new product. To build on its success, two top of the range models have been added and will contain the largest number of pocket springs in any Sealy bed underneath a layer of supportive Geltex. The Signature Hybrid will have 4,200 pocket and minipocket springs and the Regency 3,600 springs. Sealy UK has been making beds in the

Ruby Ortho is the firmer of the two beds with a Posturetech 660 spring unit while the Ruby Support is of a softer spring design with a high loft mattress quilt. Both are no-turn mattresses. The Pocket range will see the addition of Adaptive in the Smart Fibres, for a cooler and more comfortable night’s sleep. It has also introduced Sealy Cooltech pillows with gel inserts. More chapters for mattress stories Silentnight’s showpiece at this year’s show is the new Diamond 4000 Pocket Memory Wool mattress with Mirapocket. It will also unveil the latest addition to the Geltex range – the Geltex Premier Pillow, which complements the mattress range and provides added sleep benefits. All mattresses feature an innovative Geltex comfort layer offering a unique combination of breathability to prevent the body from overheating, pressure relief, preventing pressure points from building up and body support, providing perfect spinal alignment and support. The unique open cell structure of Geltex allows air to pass through easily, preventing the body from overheating in the summer while keeping warm during colder months. Miracoil remains an important story for retailers and customers alike, with Silentnight’s ‘no roll together’ technology and spring system a key selling point for consumers looking for zoned support from a mattress. To help communicate the benefits of Miracoil to retailers, Silentnight will showcase a new video to demonstrate the unique spring system. A memory foam rolled mattress is to be added to the Mattress-Now range. Its four products will be highlighted at the show, demonstrating how this vacuumpacked collection offers convenience for retailers and consumers. Mattress-Now was awarded a Best Buy status by Which? and voted number one in the memory foam mattress category. The Memory 3 Zone mattress was tested by Which? under three categories: performance, durability and usability and scored 70 out of 100 with high scores for body support when lying on the side, bounciness, stability and durability. The show will also see the introduction of the Safe Night’s cot bed mattress collection. Featuring an exclusive Airstream foam free technology in conjunction with John Cotton, the range will have a dedicated marketing campaign for autumn/winter 2014. Responding to retailer feedback, the company will launch a top of bed proposition for independent retailers with a new ordering system allowing direct ordering of Silentnight pillows, duvets, protectors and toppers. Another level of innovation Kaymed’s aim at the show is to ensure visitors experience what it describes as the most advanced range of beds available in the UK. It is launching several materials developed, manufactured by and exclusive to the company, that combine comfort, industry leading pressure relief and sleep surface temperature regulation. Therma-Phase combines a high density viscoelastic with an infusion of phase-change gel crystals. The gel works constantly to absorb, store and release body heat to maintain the ideal sleep surface temperature of 30-32°C. This is achieved via a chain reaction at molecular level rather than by treating materials with sprays or treatments – ensuring the material works infinitely. The result is an innovative material that provides the body with the optimum level of comfort, support and pressure relief – essential for a restful night’s sleep. The Therma-Phase range will include solid core and pocket sprung models, all with a 10-year warranty. K3Gel is a therapeutic sleep system patented by Kaymed that it says provides superior comfort and disperses pressure through its unique three-dimensional cell structure. Manufactured using natural mineral oils, K3Gel responds to embrace the sleeper’s shape instantly, helping to relieve aches and pains. The cells create air pockets that enhance air circulation and regulate body temperature for sleeping comfort. Kaymed offers a range of pocket spring K3Gel models in its standard range with a 10-year warranty as standard. With comfort to the fore, there is V85. Available as a solid block or on pocket springs, V85 is a superior grade viscoelastic providing a level of comfort usually associated with the most expensive materials, says Kaymed. V85 has a high level of density that gives a combination of support and pressure relief regardless of temperature. V85 is recognised by the NHS for its unique properties and supplied in mattresses for medical use. While some materials require heat to make them function – and also more susceptible to environmental conditions – V85 remains consistently comfortable throughout the year and

supplying comfort, and a spring system design that copes with heavy use. The company says Mighty Bed must be the most durable heavy-duty base available in the UK, and has a 15-year warranty. Visit: www.kaymed.co.uk

Interiors Monthly September 2014

Mike Davies, GNG Group md. Harrower says: ‘Many companies in the UK bed market claim to be innovative but they are guilty of just copying what a few “leaders” have done. I’ve been fortunate in working with great products during my career and I’m confident the new products that Komfi will be launching in September are both innovative and commercially very well targeted and offer something new for the bed retailer to sell.’ Harrower was Sealy UK md for a decade before moving to Dormeo UK where he was responsible for the retail launch of the Dormeo Octaspring mattress range into the UK. Komfi will only be offering its new

collection for sale through retail stores. The collection boasts the newest foam technologies, advanced pressure mapping, enhanced ventilation and the same superior quality foam that is used in its highest specification medical mattresses. ‘The collection showcases the very latest advances in sleep technology, reflecting our passion and commitment to offering our customers the very best products that can compete at the highest level. We’re confident that we can provide bed retailers with unique, premium quality sleep solutions at extremely competitive price points,’ adds Davies. Visit: www.komfi.com

Airsprung offers a range of delivery options

Clicking with retailers For more than 140 years, Airsprung Beds has been at the forefront of making beds that represent excellent value for money. As a manufacturer to the largest retailers in the business, the company has great knowledge of customer satisfaction and has become the go-to brand for online retailers, both in the UK and overseas. Airsprung was the first manufacturer to truly embrace online retail and, as such, has a significant advantage in being able to offer the right products, service and delivery that online retailers demand. Because it understands the online consumer’s expectations and entitlement Airsprung is a natural partner for retailers that want to maximise their own consumer experience and make

shopping for beds and mattresses trouble and stress free. With more and more retailers now offering beds online, Airsprung has become a popular choice for private label products from value mattresses right through to high specification sleeping solutions. Manufacturing is only part of the package, which is why it has developed a range of delivery solutions to satisfy the needs of individual retailers. These solutions range from a straightforward ex-works/collection right through to comprehensive DHD services that can include often overlooked issues such as re-booking when the customer is not in, or collecting a faulty product in exchange for a new one.

Becoming increasingly popular is the Collect and Recycle service with a DHD. This means that the consumer is assured peace of mind that their new bed does not mean that their old one becomes a burden on the environment. Crucial to any online retailer is the attention to detail that ensures each delivery is swift and trouble-free – this is why Airsprung takes exceptional care when dealing with delivery issues and is the reason why it offers different delivery solutions depending on the retailer’s requirements. At the show Airsprung will highlight its expanded collection including bed frames and storage solutions and new mattress compositions. Visit: www.airsprungbeds.co.uk

Tradition, experience and a unique sleeping solution The Hush from Airsprung Collection makes the most of Airsprung’s experience. The collection uses traditional methods and materials, alongside the latest developments in manufacturing, with the aim of providing a perfect night’s sleep. A wider combination of components are used, ranging from innovative spring units through to the softest of fillings and fabrics. Each bed uses unique materials and processes to achieve the perfect recipe for sleeping comfort. The birth of the Hush from Airsprung brand was due to an increasing need to showcase the creative side of Airsprung Beds, both in terms of manufacture and design, but still with an eye on value. Floating on clouds

Victoria

Gainsborough will add two models to its Pocket Cloud Collection that was launched at last year’s show. These latest models extend the high specifications, with increased spring counts and incorporating loose hair fillings. ‘The past 12 months has seen us launch Pocket Cloud across the UK and we have been delighted with the response from retailers who have stocked it,’ says Andy Richards, Gainsborough sales and marketing director. ‘The unique feel coupled with the exceptional quality that our hand-made beds are known for has allowed retailers to offer superb quality beds and mattresses at prices that really are great value for money. ‘The name for the range came from the idea that we have developed and constructed, namely to give a real sensation of floating,’ he explains. Last year saw the introduction of the Power edge support system across all Gainsborough models. This works by using rows of heavy-duty springing on the outer edges of the mattress which, when supported by at least two rows of genuine hand side-stitching and the Real Edge divan base, gives support for the sleeper right up to the edge of each individually created mattress. Richards says retailers reported that one comment frequently made by

Interiors Monthly September 2014

people considering hand-made mattresses was the tendency for them to be soft towards the edge and leave the sleeper with a sensation of roll off. ‘We identified a real opportunity whereby the consumer didn’t have to compromise between the quality and comfort of our high quality hand-made beds and soft edge mattresses that are sometimes associated with that. Since launching the system last year, I think it is fair to say we haven’t looked back and although trade has remained a challenge for most retailers, we have seen genuine growth – it all has to be down to the

quality of the products and the exceptional value for money they offer,’ he says. Gainsborough has a range of individually designed headboards to complement the collection in a large choice of chenille fabrics. Also, two models will be added to the Windsor Bed Company range, offering double-decker spring counts for the first time along with hand-nested pocket spring units and finished with hand sidestitched borders and the Power edge support system. The Natural Collection mattresses will have stretch knit covers

Keep cool with latex Memory foam has been an undoubted triumph in recent years but excess heat has been an issue for many people. This is where Hush-a-Bye has taken a creative leap, according to Andrew Richards, Hush-a-Bye sales director. ‘Rather than start with memory foam and look for ways to make it less hot, why don’t we start with a product that is inherently cooler but with similar pressure relieving properties to memory foam and then explore ways to make it even cooler? The answer lay in adapting an existing material: latex. It is a wellestablished material for mattresses that is not only naturally cooler than memory foam but has many additional advantages. By adding gel technology to latex we really can have the best of both worlds. The resulting product is Coolwave Latex, a brand exclusive to Hush-a-Bye,’ he says. In independent tests latex gel is shown to absorb heat less quickly than memory foam and the heat penetration into the mattress is not so deep. Moisture also

78

Interiors Monthly September 2014

shows lower infiltration than memory foam. Because of the cell structure of latex, its recovery time is quicker than memory foam thereby avoiding the hollow ‘pocket’ that can sometimes be an issue. ‘When you also consider latex’s natural properties and its reduced impact on the environment, it becomes a very compelling proposition. The new models will have the unique styling of 3D designed stretch knit covers, which have to be seen to be properly appreciated. If you think you know latex and you think you know gel, you may be surprised,’ says Richards. Hush-a-Bye is also expanding its Natural Collection. This range is seen as the heart of the business, and to build on

Coolwave Latex is exclusive to Hush-a-Bye

the success it is launching models finished with heavy weighted, top of the range, soft stretch knit covers. The mattresses will feature cotton, wool and cashmere fillings with a new swatch of upholstery type fabric in a range of colours for the bases. Just over 12 months ago, headboard and bedroom furniture manufacturer Swanglen became a sister company to Hush-a-Bye. ‘The first fruits of that relationship will be on show with a whole new collection of headboards designed exclusively for Hush-a-Bye. Whether it is exciting new technology, or extending our core products, there is something for everyone this year,’ adds Richards. Visit: www.hushabyebeds.co.uk

All models can easily be supplemented with bespoke features to provide a bed built for individual customers. MiBed models come with the latest in gel technology and a twin gel system. The aim is to improve sleep knowledge so consumers have a better in-store experience and select the right bed

Promoting the benefits of sleep A training course that puts the emphasis on sleep rather than just product knowledge An online professional development programme for shopfloor staff working for independent and multiple bed retailers could become the industry standard. The UK’s first sleep selling programme, to be officially launched at The Bed Show this month, has taken more than a year to develop and will be the most costeffective, accessible course of its kind in the industry, according to the Sleep Council. Focusing on sleep knowledge rather than product knowledge, the Sleep Council Sales Academy will teach sales

90

Interiors Monthly September 2014

staff how to use that knowledge effectively with customers to build trust. Successful completion will earn sales staff the title of Sleep Council Sales Academy Accredited Advisor and as well as being awarded a certificate and pin badge, they will have access to the Sleep Hub App. ‘Our ambition is to see the Sleep Council Sales Academy qualification become the industry standard in sleep knowledge and selling skills for all bed retail sales professionals,’ says Jessica Alexander, National Bed Federation executive director.

‘We hope that with continued marketing and PR, the badge of a Sleep Council Accredited Advisor will become recognised and respected by both the trade and consumers alike.’ The programme is Sleep Council branded rather than NBF as Sleep Council is the consumer education arm and this programme is consumer facing and generic. ‘We believe that everyone in the industry – retailers, manufacturers and suppliers – will reap the benefits,’ adds Alexander. Versatility is a key feature for homeowners and when it comes to the bedroom Wiemann understands how important it is to offer variation. Through its VIP collection, Semi-Solid Wood and other bedroom and wardrobe ranges, it offers bedroom furniture to accommodate different tastes and needs. Loft is one of the leading German bedroom manufacturer’s VIP collections and one of Wiemann’s bestsellers. It takes combination wardrobes to new heights, with flexibility guaranteed. The collection offers the choice of single, 50cm units right up to 4m, eight-door arrangements, with bifold doors. The cupboards can be either full length or have three base drawers with the combinations. VIP ranges each offer extra features. With Loft this includes grey and white striped finished interiors, fully enclosed fixing cams and additional accessories. ‘The VIP collection identifies our three top trends that consumers go for time and time again. Loft, Shanghai and Manhattan offer three different looks but shows that timeless quality and extra features remain an important part of the buying process,’ says Peter Hewitt, md of Litmus Furniture, sole UK agent for Wiemann. The Semi-Solid Wood range includes Avore and Serena. Avore features a combination of semi-solid oak with a rich mocca finish trim creating a deep, rich and bold effect. Serena is sassy and sleek – ideal for the modern dweller. It combines light semi-solid oak with a choice of glass and mirrored fronts in Sahara or magnolia coloured glass. Being one of Wiemann’s top wardrobe and bedroom ranges, a fourth version of Hollywood was launched earlier this year. It has Wiemann’s most popular sliding door wardrobe options, each made up from five horizontal panels – making a huge number of options for a personal look. It is available in 2.17m or 2.35m heights, and unit widths from 2m to 4m, all with two sliding doors and matching bedframes and chests of drawers. ‘Bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes and therefore, it’s key to offer consumers a choice of finishes and fittings. We’re constantly adding and improving our ranges and all of the above is testament to that – whether it’s a brand new range, or an updated version of one of our classics,’ adds Hewitt. Applying science to sleep The latest Spanish innovations are now available in the UK

POS is available for the range Perfectex uses thermo-regulating microcapsules and 30 colours are available

Staingard and Delis Products have teamed up to introduce Delis’ range of mattress protection products. ‘Delis, one of Spain’s foremost manufacturers of bedding products has led the way for many years now in the development of innovative products that both protect your mattress and provide a healthy and hygienic sleep surface,’ says Paul Aiston, Staingard md. ‘By harnessing the most natural products such as Tencel and cotton and combining them with Perlam, the most technologically advanced impermeable membranes, Delis has created a union between nature and

science to develop the best products available.’ Sold as 2 in 1 protectors and fitted sheets, they are available in 30 colours with pillow and duvet protectors also available. The extensive range offers products in sizes designed to be used in the smallest cot to the largest bed. ‘To complement this offering, Delis has pioneered a revolutionary concept in the creation of a great night’s sleep with PCM, the “thermal intelligence” system. Called Perfectex, this amazing product benefits from the integration of thousands of intelligent thermoregulating microcapsules that work in

harmony with the body to regulate temperature during sleep,’ explains Aiston. Delis’ advanced production facilities in Spain allow Staingard to offer its stockists a large stockholding in the UK and access to a 14-day turnaround on any product and special sizes and colours. ‘A great range of POS and the backup of Staingard’s nationwide team of experts means that retailers can, with a very small investment in stock and floorspace, create a very profitable value added product to their retail offering,’ adds Aiston. Four store triumph Competition between stores helped push sales to new highs Retailer Alan Ward recently completed a competition to drive up sales in bedding accessories at its Shrewsbury, Winsford, Chester and Newcastle-under-Lyme stores. Working with its long-term partner in the selling of mattress protectors and warranties, Protect-A-Bed, the aim was to improve on the already outstanding rates of Protect-A-Bed products to beds sold. The company’s expertise in mattress protection was embraced within the Alan Ward stores, giving positive results. ‘Several factors are behind this, first, a focused offering of products, ranging

from Good, Better, Best allowing a protector to be offered with any bed sale. Following this, detailed training and support for all sales staff empowered the team to become experts in mattress protection, which is invaluable,’ says Simon Zamet, Protect-A-Bed ceo. ‘Our mattress protectors do not only create a healthy sleeping environment, they make the mattress last longer and protect the customer’s investment. Our training teaches the importance of mattress protection, by changing a sales team’s mindset that every mattress does need protecting. This change in focus quickly increases sales.’ The challenge was set among the branches to raise conversion rates to more than 50%. There were incentives for the highest achieving branch and individual, with Protect-A-Bed offering generous rewards if targets were met. Peaks within the competition saw mattress protector sales rates rise to more than 80%, only to be bettered by some individuals who weekly managed

to score 100% by selling a protector to every customer who bought a bed. Eventually, the Winsford store narrowly came out on top. ‘The momentum has been incredible, all four stores really got behind what we are trying to achieve and the results are excellent. The increase in the volume of sales has been fantastic. This has also followed on consistently after the competition ended, which is brilliant,’ adds Adrian Novick, Alan Ward area sales manager. RUGS The Baltic Sea has several water types and different blue shades. The Baltic rug embodies the essence of the sea with a blue colour gradient. Made from hand-tufted 100% Tencel, it transmits the strength of the sea and the softness of the blue colour.

The Gobi desert is the largest and driest desert in Asia. The Tencel Gobi rug depicts the extreme and opposite conditions that occur in this desert through its dark grey and sandy tones.

Perhaps best known for its upholstery and flamboyant cabinet ranges, Brabbu has a growing rug collection, inspired by overseas landmarks Visit: www.brabbu.com

The Peruvian city of Cuzco was formerly the historic capital of the Inca Empire. The Cuzco rug is inspired by the motifs used in Inca textiles, known for its different geometric patterns, all combined into one piece, like a patchwork. It is made in handtufted dyed wool and depicts a simplification of these patterns into different stripes of geometric shapes and lines, resulting in a sober but rhythmic composition in sandy tones.

Sudd is the vast swamp located in the south of Sudan which has its origins in the Arabic word that means barrier or obstruction. Like the swamp that inspired this rug, Sudd features an asymmetrical pattern transmitting a strong and natural sensation. The colour tones of the hand-tufted 100% wool rug remind you of the swamp’s vegetation.

Punchy patterns Alternative Flooring has collaborated with iconic designers Margo Selby and Ashley Hicks for its latest broadloom carpet collection, Quirky B ‘Everyone loves the patterns in our Quirky runners, so it was a simple step to combine pattern and colour in a broadloom carpet. Quite simply, that’s how Quirky B, a patterned carpet collection including collaborations with textile designer Margo Selby and interior designer Ashley Hicks, came about,’ says Lorna Haigh, Alternative Flooring head of marketing. ‘I’m thrilled to present these new carpet designs. I love Alternative’s fresh, no-nonsense approach – so different from the usual designer carpet world,’ says Hicks. ‘I love pattern, and especially on the floor. It gives instant character and vitality to a space, as well as usefully hiding marks and damage: as a father, I know about that. ‘I created the Chainmail design for a Campaign for Wool roomset at Somerset House in 2013, but its angular geometry would work just as well anywhere. A play on traditional hexagon grids, its interwoven chain links give a dynamic edge to a room. Daisy, inspired by wall-decoration in an old temple in Sri Lanka, has a punchy, pop presence that will inject a touch of 1960’s glamour into any room.’ Chainmail has three designs: Chainmail Figaro combines red, damson, black and linen; Chainmail Venetian has natural light and dark brown, moss and linen; while Chainmail

Panther combines white, black, brown, red and linen. Daisy is a vintage tile-like floral with repeated rows of large and small flowers in shades recalling different varieties of daisies. Daisy Gerbera combines white, black, brown and linen; Daisy Gloriosa has natural brown, duck egg and linen; while Daisy Cosmos combines red, damson and brown. ‘Alternative Flooring is a unique British carpet manufacturer that has a similar design philosophy to mine, in that it believes creating a carpet or textile is both a craft and an art. The way it makes carpets is part of a time-honoured tradition and employs the expertise of skilled craftsmen at every stage,’ says Selby. Making it on a handloom was an integral part of the design process for Selby’s first carpets. Originally produced as soft silk and wool fabrics, the designs have been blown up and recoloured to make them suitable for flooring. The graphic colour combinations with contrasting light and dark shades give a deep textural feel to the carpets and runners. ‘Shuttle is derived from the hand-woven deflected double cloth weaves, while Fair Isle takes inspiration from the silk jacquard collection. Like many of my designs the patterns are inspired by the process of weaving and the uniformed geometric shapes reflect the structured nature of the craft,’ she explains.

Fair Isle is a pattern carpet and runner with signature Margo Selby motifs repeated in rows. There are three designs: Fair Isle Annie with duck egg, moss, grey and brown on linen; Fair Isle Sutton combines black, brown, light and mid-grey on linen, while Fair Isle Reiko has red, damson, purple and grey on linen. Shuttle is a carpet in a rhythmic criss-cross design. Shuttle Silas has black, duck egg and grey on linen; Shuttle Jack has natural, duck egg, grey and brown on linen, while Shuttle Peter has red, damson and grey on linen. The range also includes five broadloom designs: Spotty, Geo, Zebo, Zip and Honeycomb. ‘As our lives become busier, we all need the power of quiet. In large rooms hard floors are noisy and cold. Carpet exudes comfort and brings joy to the home,’ says Lorna Haigh, Alternative Flooring head of marketing. ‘Great British patterned carpets are making the whole nation warm to the comfort of wool carpet and the joy of pattern that makes our floors sing.’ The carpets are available in a 3.66m width and the Margo Selby runners in a 69cm width. They will be launched later this month at Decorex. Visit: www.alternativeflooring.com
