The price of competition The decline in the interiors market since its 2005 peak has been laid bare by the Office for National Statistics’ Family Spending report for 2011. While the figures in the report – a 14.4% drop in spending on furniture and furnishings and a 24.4% fall in flooring – are bad enough, wait until you see what the price competition of both sectors has done to sales values. By not being able to increase prices to keep up with inflation, furniture has missed out on almost 30% of sales and flooring almost 40%. Producing accurate industry data has historically been difficult, but the figures including inflation are a more realistic picture of what’s happened in the past few years than the headline ones. The decision of Brockway Carpets and Cormar Carpets to join the Carpet Foundation is a welcome move. As John Duncan, Carpet Foundation chairman says,

hopefully their joining will be a catalyst for others to join. The independent flooring retail sector needs a voice to promote it and lobby on its wider needs and the Carpet Foundation is that voice. The past month has seen what could be interesting career changes: Greg Suthern moving to bed manufacturing and Mark Symes leaving Willis & Gambier. Dormeo Octaspring maker Studio Moderna Brands will gain from Suthern’s retail experience as it tries to expand its presence, while Symes is expected to return to the furniture market. The move into the insurance replacement market by Lifestyle Floors is one that could cause a few ripples, with many retailers likely to be attracted by the lack of membership costs or fees. If your living room carpet has been ruined, dealing with the insurance claim and arranging fitting of the new flooring can be a stress. Most consumers would prefer to deal with a retailer they may already know or someone who can give them personal attention, rather than encountering several salespeople. With 200,000 flooring insurance claims a year, it is a slice of the market high street stores should be taking the most of.

Brockway and Cormar join the Carpet Foundation Brockway Carpets and Cormar Carpets have joined the Carpet Foundation as full manufacturing members. The new manufacturer subscriptions policy played a key part in recruiting the two manufacturers and it is hoped others will follow, says John Duncan, Carpet Foundation chairman. He says the decision will assist the Foundation as it sets about reinvigorating itself promotionally, with digital activity planned for 2013, and financially, with a new fee structure for both manufacturers and retailers. ‘It is a real bonus for us and sends out a strong message to the industry at large. It is no secret that it has been a challenging period for us but we have remodelled ourselves and will emerge leaner, fitter and stronger and ideally positioned to build on the previous hard work. We have exciting and innovative plans in place for 2013 and this is the perfect way to start a new year,’ adds Duncan.
‘As original founding members, it is good to be back,’ says Charles Annable, Brockway md. ‘In addition to the promotional work the Carpet Foundation does and its support of the independent retailer, the technical expertise we can garner from them and the increasing importance of environmental matters influenced our decision. Regulatory compliance is going to be key going forward, particularly in the markets we are seeking to operate in, and the experience and help that the Carpet Foundation can provide in this area will be invaluable to us.’ David Cormack, Cormar marketing director, says: ‘Key to our involvement, is the fact that the Carpet Foundation has become a vehicle to promote independent flooring retailers and buying groups in the UK. As we are a 100% British carpet manufacturer, with the majority of our business with independents, it obviously makes sense for Cormar to endeavour to support them and joining the Carpet Foundation will only strengthen that bond.’
Darren Shapland, Carpetright chief executive, says the chain has the right strategy but needs to speed up improving its stores and marketing its beds offer. UK retail sales increased by 3% on a like for like basis in the six months to 27 October with gross margins rising from 58% to 61.7%. But, including wholesale sales, like for like sales dropped by 0.7% and total sales fell 1.6% to £189.1m. Some £12.4m of property charges saw a pre-tax loss of £7.9m. Shapland says the group ‘grew underlying profits and generated cash in line with expectations during the first half, with an encouraging increase in UK retail store like for like sales and a significant improvement in gross profit percentage year on year’. Trading conditions in the Netherlands remained difficult. ‘Having been with the business for seven months and seen it trade through the important September to November peak has confirmed my initial view that the group is well managed and that no fundamental shift in strategy is required. ‘That said, we believe there are opportunities to accelerate the pace of a number of current self-help initiatives, notably the ongoing modernisation of the store estate, building customer awareness of our bed offer and further improving customer service, to enable us to grow our market share,’ says Shapland.

Overseas love affair continues The UK continued its love affair with imported furniture last year. Imports of furniture decreased by just 4.4%, according to the FIRA Statistics Digest 2012, falling from £4.5bn to £4.3bn. China remained the largest exporter (32%) while Italy maintained its role as a major source (11%). According to the report, exports continued to climb, reaching £993m. The report says that from 2008 to 2011, the total number of UK furniture manufacturers dropped by 4%, with 225 fewer companies in 2011 than 2010. Total turnover in manufacturer sales fell by 23% over the 2008 to 2011 period and average employment fell by 15%.

The average household spent just £717.60 a year on furniture, flooring and furnishings in 2011. Analysis of the Office for National Statistics’ Family Spending report reveals that spending on furniture, flooring and furnishings has fallen by 12.1% since the peak in 2005. In 2005 spending on furniture and furnishings was £650 per household, 14.4% higher than 2011. But if it had kept pace with inflation spending would have been 29.2% higher. Outlay on flooring in 2011 was 24.4% lower at £161.20. If it had kept pace with inflation it would have been £264.79 – 39.1% higher. The report found that in households where the main householder was under 30, £618.80 was spent on furniture and furnishings and £104 on flooring. For those aged 30 to 40 the figures were £696.80 and £208; for those between 50 and 64 it was £561.60 and £182; for 65 to 74 year-olds spending was £421.20 and £124.80 and for those aged 75 and over it was £234 and £88.40. If the figures are broken down by income bracket, each 10% of households spend was (lowest first): £202.80 and

Decorex move: Interiors and design exhibition Decorex is to leave its traditional home of the grounds of the Royal Chelsea Hospital and move to Perks Field next to Kensington Palace. Show organiser UBM says it was keen to keep the event in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea as it provides a prestigious central London location and maintains its reputation as a design hub. The show runs from 22-25 September.
Cotswold first Furniture chain The Cotswold Company has become the first retailer to offer shoppers credit from controversial payday loan company Wonga. The credit is being marketed under the Paylater brand, with Wonga only mentioned in the small print. Consumers pay a 7% administration fee then three payments, with an APR of 28%. This compares with 4,214% for Wonga’s loans. Wonga says it hopes to introduce the facility with other retailers.
No-fee insurance plan will ‘boost high street stores’ Lifestyle Floors has launched an insurance flooring replacement service that it hopes will bring business back to high street stores. There are more than 200,000 flooring replacement insurance claims every year, according to the supplier, which has formed a partnership with insurance claim company Imperial Consultants.

Interiors Monthly January 2013
There is no cost to retailers signing up for the scheme and no later fees. The consumer pays direct to the retailer which has certainty on pricing with a fixed price list of flooring, accessories and fitting. Once the details of the claim are viewed and accepted via Lifestyle’s website no other retailer will be able to view the job details.
‘We are able to offer insurance companies a network of retailers across the country. It’s all about bringing the business back to the high street. Many consumers would prefer to deal with their local retailer and hopefully this will bring them business they would not have had access to, at no cost to them,’ says a Lifestyle spokeswoman.

Suthern switches from retail to manufacturing Greg Suthern, former Dreams chief operating officer, has joined Studio Moderna Brands International, parent company of bed manufacturer Dormeo Octaspring in same role. ‘What intrigued me with Studio Moderna was the opportunity to take a truly revolutionary product international. The product is quite simply the most exciting thing to happen in beds for decades. This is really the iPad of beds, in that it’s a true game-changer. As a result demand is already huge, so we need to expand our production capacity and be ready for sales to explode in 2013,’ he says. Kym Bramm, Studio Moderna Brands International chief executive, says: ‘We’re delighted to have appointed Greg. This has been a tremendous first year for Octaspring, with major launches in the UK, US, Canada, Japan in February 2013, and Greg’s appointment is another significant step in expanding our growth and satisfying demand. His vast experience, expertise and understanding of the requirements of the bedding retail industry will be a major driver in moving us to the next level internationally.’

Symes exits from Willis & Gambier Mark Symes has left his role as md of Willis & Gambier after four years. Mohamad Amini, director of parent company Samson Holding, has replaced him on an interim basis, supported by David Lane, W&G commercial director and Elliot Li, W&G finance director. Symes had been in charge of W&G since Samson bought the company from administration in October 2008. Samson says Symes wanted to move on with his career.
Brighthouse growth Furniture123 has annual sales of £2.2m
Furniture123 sold Etailer Buy It Direct has bought rival Furniture123 just weeks after its founders put it up for sale. ‘Furniture123 is one of the best known names in online furniture retailing and acquiring the business makes sound strategic sense for us. We understand online retailing very well and are excited at the prospect of moving into the furniture sector,’ says Nick Glynne, Buy It Direct md. The deal sees £90m etailer Buy It Direct acquire the domain name, website, stock, equipment and intellectual property of Furniture123 which has annual sales of £2.2m. ‘The synergies that Buy It Direct can bring to bear will ensure that Furniture123 will prosper in an increasingly competitive market,’ says Julian Field, Furniture123 co-founder.

Rent-to-own furniture and electricals chain Brighthouse has seen profits and sales jump in the past six months as it continues to expand. Like for like sales rose by 7.7% in the six months to 30 September as total sales climbed 13.2% to £142.8m. Furniture sales were described as performing strongly. Sixteen stores were opened in the period, increasing numbers to 269. The chain, which allows shoppers to pay weekly with an APR of 29.9%, saw profits rise 11.1% to £22.1m.
Distribution move Headlam has added to its wholesale network, buying CK Davie. The group paid an initial £193,600 for the Aberdeen-based distributor. A further £275,400 will be paid when the deal is completed. CK Davie had sales of £3.23m last year and also has a branch in Dundee.

Sale success is all about delivery Fingers crossed that it is going to continue but, say it quietly, the winter sale has got off to a good start. We may only be a few days into it and, of course, the customers could dry up by the end of today, but I have a good feeling about the sale this time. Certainly better than last year. We were ready in good time so we decided that we may as well start. We booked an extra advert in the local paper and began the sale on 23 December. I figured that by then most people would have done any last minute gift and food shopping and could be interested in something different. And we were going to be open anyway, so why not? In the advert we highlighted that we could offer very quick

We even had one order on 23 December that we managed to deliver on Christmas Eve delivery, often next day, over the discounts on offer. During the past few months we’ve been switching more to suppliers who can deliver quickly, preferably direct to the customer. If people are paying a decent amount of money they want their goods now, not in weeks. And with stores closing every month it gives them the extra confidence to order if they know they’ll get their furniture delivered almost immediately. I’m glad to say the policy has been paying off. The once traditional pre-Christmas delivery deadline rush was better than in 2011, but that wasn’t hard. The surprising thing was that people were leaving it right up to the end before ordering, but in the week before Christmas we sold more dining tables than we did during the whole of December 2011. And through a mixture of our suppliers and having a little more stock we delivered every last one. We even had one order on 23 December that we managed to deliver on Christmas Eve. Since Christmas, quick delivery hasn’t lost any of its appeal and it seems that if you can get it out there within a few days, the customers will have it. Hopefully this will carry on for a while longer. These past few weeks have certainly improved my mood for the upcoming shows.

The opening of the 185,000sqft Leekes home store on 22 September last year could turn out to be one of the most important days in the family-owned company’s history, since James Leeke began selling ironmongery in his front room in Clydach Vale, Tonybandy in 1897. Although the company has come along way since then, the opening of its eighth – and by far the largest – home store has shown it may have developed a store format that could be developed across the country. Leekes’ stores have always offered a full range of interiors products, but the conversion of the former Makro unit has allowed the scale of the offer to be significantly boosted.

‘From day one customer response and sales figures have been unprecedented, exceeding all expectations’ And with the space available, many would be tempted to fill it with as many products as possible to ensure they appeal to a wide range of consumers. After all, £6m is no small sum to spend during a recession. But the temptation was resisted, with all departments given room to let products be shown to their best in plenty of space – be it flooring, kitchens, furniture, lighting, furnishings, beds or its clothing, food or cycling concessions. Despite being the size of an Ikea, the store atmosphere and shopping experience is different – there is no race track for example and shoppers can freely move from one department

to the other without ever feeling trapped, lost or overwhelmed. And since the opening, shoppers across the West Midlands have responded. ‘From day one customer response and sales figures have been unprecedented, exceeding all expectations,’ says Emma Leeke, Leekes retail md. So much so that an extra bank of tills has been installed and staffing numbers have been lifted by 30 to 90 since opening. In addition there are 20 self-employed contractors, with a further 40 staff working for the concession partners. ‘This is already much higher than we anticipated needing in the first three months of operation and gets us well on

the way to the 200 to 250 we believed we would use when fully operational,’ explains Leeke. Sales are already at the levels of its more established branches. ‘Particularly strong areas include furniture departments, where we already had a reputation in the Midlands from our department store in Bilston and furniture stores in Stoke on Trent and Bedworth [when it purchased Coles in 2009, with the Coventry store replacing Bedworth] but also in new areas such as kitchens and tableware, lighting and clothing,’ she says. And the start of the winter sale is proving to be no exception: it took five minutes for the first transaction to be made and within four hours of opening at 10am sales targets had been met and then exceeded, at 25% above target. Early shoppers caused tailbacks on the roads and the 500space car park was practically full for most of the day as 2,000 shoppers visited. Online sales for the chain were up 15%. Starting from a clean slate gave the company the opportunity to try new approaches. All equipment was designed in-house, lighting displays were updated – there are more than 150 ceiling and 150 table lamps on display – the zoning of its furniture offer was improved, something that will be rolled out to other stores. And at the core of its offer are brands. The kitchen and tableware range contains all the leading brands from Denby and Wedgwood to Sophie Conran, Tefal and Joseph Joseph. The furniture, flooring, beds and bathroom departments are a Who’s Who of names – including the country’s largest G Plan Upholstery studio alongside Duresta, Ercol, Calligaris, Halo, Hulsta, Holte and Hammonds galleries or studios. These are

supported by a non-branded selection and Leekes’ price promise to attract those tempted to go elsewhere online. The store and the chain has benefitted from consumers improving their homes, rather than moving, and Leeke is confident this trend, and the chain’s ability to supply it, will continue this year. There is an argument that downturns are the very time to invest so you are the first to gain from an upturn and Leekes is following this route. It owns the sites of all its stores and is planning a £2m refurbishment to its Melksham branch that will give it more floorspace and also house a medical practice with 20,000 patients. At Llantrisant, a new Leekes store will be the centrepiece of a £200m redevelopment of the town centre and could be one of the first completed. Downturn? Retail pessimism? Not here.

Single voice Consolidating brands has paid dividends for Bensons for Beds Last year was when three successfully became one – Steinhoff International consolidated its Bensons for Beds, Sleepmasters and Bed Shed chains as Bensons for Beds. For years the three had competed, with three different marketing messages and product offers. Alan Williams, Bensons for Beds md, says when he became responsible for the trio in 2011, the state of the economy meant tough decisions had to be made as collectively it had the outlets but too many voices to market. After research, Bensons for Beds emerged as the name to retail. Management was keen to retain the Sleepmasters brand given its strong associations with value among shoppers and so it has become a successful own-label range for the chain. It was also decided that the shopping experience had to be improved which saw the introduction of The Comfort Station. This reduced the buying decision to three simple steps: choose the bed style, mattress firmness and mattress type. It also saw the removal of technological terms, which many shoppers can find confusing. Taking the best bits of the three chains has paid dividends for the new store. Where stores have been converted, sales have increased by as much as 50%. Its success was recognised when it was named Multiple Bed Retailer of the Year at the National Bed Federation Bed Show Awards, an award Williams says he never expected to win. ‘We are so proud to have been named Multiple Bed Retailer of the Year 2012. It’s been a year of consolidation and great change, and we have worked tirelessly to overhaul our in-store shopping experience and introduce The Comfort Station to our customers. ‘This award is testament to all the hard work that the Bensons for Beds team has put into making the brand a success. It’s a fantastic achievement and one that everyone should be proud of.’

Spreading the word on sleep Independent retailers are at the centre of Silentnight’s plans Sleeping soundly is the bedrock of any person’s sense of health and wellbeing. But according to research by Silentnight, up to 75% of people are not getting a good night’s sleep. ‘Our ambition and goal is not merely as a manufacturer but to act as providers of the perfect sleep,’ says Steve Freeman, Silentnight Group md. And he says independent retailers are at the heart of its desire to get people sleeping better. ‘We value the role independents play and we’re as committed as ever to strengthening our position in the sector. That’s why we made our popular Classics range available exclusively to them, and why we’re so proud to continue to launch the hand-crafted Diamond collection,’ he says. ‘The strength of the Silentnight heritage has been built from the continued support of our independent retailer partners. It is here the company began its journey trading through the local independent bed specialists and this sector remains as important to us today. We know that our independent partners are an integral part of our future strategy,’ he adds. The Diamond collection comprises three models: 1400 Natural Luxury, 2000 Ortho Luxury and 2800 Latex Luxury, representing new levels of premium quality and design, specially tailored to help achieve a great night’s sleep. All are traditionally hand-crafted using natural fillings including silk, lamb’s wool, cashmere and latex. The beds also feature Silentnight’s Mirapocket pocket spring system. Each mattress contains small springs housed in individual fabric pockets, with each of the springs spreading the weight of the person lying on it to provide support and comfort. The springs run from edge to edge for maximum sleep space. There is a choice of four upholstered divan base fabric options and coordinating headboards are available. Visit: www.silentnight.co.uk

POS has helped drive sales for Dormeo Octaspring Dormeo Octaspring has been in the UK bed market for a little over a year and the mattress technology, based around memory foam springs, is already being sold in more than 350 stores. ‘We have invested significantly to deliver this growth with more than £1m spent on advertising in the UK in 2012,’ says John Bramm, Dormeo Octaspring md. The company is continuing from where it left off last year by sponsoring the weather forecasts on ITV1’s Daybreak programme as part of a large advertising push in January and February.

‘The mattresses uniquely offer the cradling effect of memory foam springs to produce a mattress that feels like no other. The open structure of the springs ensures the mattress is cool and well ventilated all night long, while the memory foam technology provides consistent support and pressure relief. In fact, it delivers all the benefits of traditional spring and memory foam beds, with none of the drawbacks,’ says Bramm. He highlights the success of its POS at attracting shoppers using its customary black and orange branding. ‘It has a very strong focus on the features and benefits of the beds, while working equally hard to give a powerful premium feel and create an “I want one of those” response in customers.’ Bramm says this strong in-store presence has been key to growth in the past year. ‘We see customers coming straight to the beds, lying down on them, and spending a lot of time talking to the staff about the unique feel of the mattresses. Once they have been on the bed and felt how comfortable it is, people just buy it, it’s as simple as that.’ POS includes a bed display unit, an interactive touchscreen display which features video and in-depth product information, wall-mounted displays and branded headboard sashes and
footmats. Fabric swatches and cutaway samples that show the inside and outside of the mattresses in much more detail are also available. Dormeo is offering retailers taking three or more floor models a 50% discount, with the POS collection set up in their store free of charge. Dormeo Octaspring, tel: 01628 819 055

Natural moves
Latex provides mattress comfort ‘It may not sound like it, but latex is a natural material not a synthetic material. It is made from the sap of the hevea brasiliensis tree. Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and our latex is also aerated for extra bounce and coolness,’ says Iftikhar Mirza, Rest Assured product quality manager. Latex is extra bouncy, so allows you to move around in bed more easily than on a thick memory foam mattress. ‘It is important that you move in your sleep as this allows the fluid to move around your spine to keep it “well oiled” and free of toxins for the day ahead,’ he adds. Rest Assured combines latex with pocket springs in the mattress to provide support while the springs are reinforced around the edges to prevent roll-off. Mirza also points out that people with latex allergies can use the mattresses as the latex used in all Rest Assured mattresses is effectively ‘cooked’ before it goes into the mattress, reducing the risk of allergic reactions to almost nil. Part of Rest Assured’s latex offer, Latex Luxury 2000 has 2,000 pocket springs in the no-turn mattress. Its firm base gives a supportive foundation while a luxury-feel sprung base is also available. CARPET Launching an upmarket product in a recession may not be an immediately obvious route to success, but for Flock Living’s directors, Ashoke Sethia and Gareth Lewis, it was a simple decision. While most market sectors are arguably oversupplied, the pair claim they have spotted a gap between the premium and luxury sectors that its initial 13 designs can occupy. Keen to avoid ‘me-too’ products, Flock has created seven tufted and six woven ranges, manufactured by Adam Carpets and Lano respectively. Adam was chosen for its ability to offer individual tuft control while Lano ‘technically makes the best

The three-ply yarn is manufactured by Danspin. ‘We have identified a niche in the market for an ethically robust brand and have come at it from a different perspective to the norm. We have a lifestyle positioned product range allied to an ethical consciousness that will appeal to fashionistas, middle England and the sophisticated’, says Lewis. Inspiration for the designs came from the furnishing industry while the colour palette was borne out of the clothing industry, he says. For Sethia, the launch of Flock Living is a continuation

CARPET of a family love affair with natural fibres. His family joined the UK jute trade in the 1840s and by the 1950s had become the world’s largest jute fibre supplier as it grew into a commodity conglomerate. By his own admission he could explain for days why mixed fibre products are inferior to 100% pure products, so it is no surprise that its carpets are 100% Laneve wool. ‘Now consumers want 100% natural fibres, eco credentials and luxury attributes, but they buy what they think looks nice,’ he says. Which is why it is hard to easily apply a style label to Flock’s ranges. The designs have a chameleon like quality – just by changing the colour a contemporary carpet takes on a more classical look.

With retail prices of £70 to £150 per sqm, Flock is not for every shopper or retailer, targeting just 150 to 200 top end flooring stores, independent furnishing retailers and department stores. ‘Inspiration and aspiration are the words we want to have with consumers. It might be expensive per sqm but the cost is low over the lifetime of the carpet as it lasts longer as we’re using more wool than competitors in the marketplace,’ says Sethia. The company has invested heavily in photography to support stockists, with a 30cm x 30cm book showing roomset photography next to an image of the design, and a POS stand with a 0.5sqm footprint. Further products are likely to include wiltons and flatweaves. Flock Living, tel: 020 8440 8777

Interlubke is revamping its bestselling collection
Cube Fine
Since its launch in 2002, Cube has grown to become Interlubke’s bestselling cabinet collection. In 2010 it was augmented by Cube X, when Werner Aisslinger created a streamlined variant of his original design. Now the collection is to become four combinable systems to be officially launched at IMM Cologne later this month. Cube Gap, with its cubic design language and distinctive joints, continues to embody the original design. It can be used as an individual piece of furniture or as a room divider and is stackable. Its elements can be combined in various ways and opened from the back, front or sides. For creating leaner configurations and playing with colours and materials, there is Cube Fine (formerly Cube X). All the top closing panels and side panels can be made to contrast or harmonise with the interior. Highlights can be created with matte and high-gloss lacquer or wood veneer. Cube Change has been developed for all those who love change and, like Cube Fine, uses push-to-open technology, handles or handle strips. Cabinets can be positioned individually, placed next to each other and regrouped. Cube Play can be used as a floating, variably configurable wall system that can be combined with the other Cube variants and also with accent colours. Visit: www.interluebke.com

Blendworth will add to its wallpaper and fabric offer. Chic unites two diverging trends; the glamour of haute couture and subtle pastel colours for a more modest interior decoration. Bright-coloured birds and flourishing flowers inspired Fleurique in strong, daring colours. A glossy background with a light texture adds depth and brings to life the colourful flower designs while lacquer and silver foil prints create lustrous accents, continuously changing in colour. Lavender Dream is the successor to the popular Classics wallpaper collection, with the timeless designs of the original book receiving a makeover with a new colour palette evoking an atmosphere of French lavender fields and typical English country life. Pavilion Prints is a collection of fresh satins and crisp cotton/linen fabrics. With inspiration taken from botanical studies, Jacobean crewelwork and romantic toiles, the designs offer a blend of colour and classic British design. The small scale weaves and plains of Pavilion Weaves complement the range. SHOW GUIDE COMPANY SPOTLIGHT JANSEN FURNITURE
Reproducing success Jansen has seen a shift in attitudes When Jansen Furniture started out in the UK in 1994 it was at the lower end of the market with cheaper, deep red mahogany furniture. Now it specialises in the top end. ‘About six years ago, through increasing amounts of market research worldwide, we discovered there was a noticeable trend that people were beginning to change their mindset when it came to purchasing furniture,’ says a Jansen spokesman. ‘It was apparent, that the best buy was not the cheapest or one that appeared to be the best bargain, instead the desirable purchase was the one that got you the best product for the right price with the additional reassurance that you were buying a quality lifetime addition to your home.’ The company says it is stronger than ever, not only in the UK but also in Europe, the US, Canada and the Far East. At its manufacturing facility in Indonesia it produces some 1,000

different furniture products with constant new designs. ‘Everything is quality checked, packaged and distributed to the highest degree of efficiency to ensure everything reflects the high end nature of our product,’ says the spokesman. With its largest stand for a decade, Jansen has moved to hall one at the NEC. It will have more than 130 pieces of furniture on display along with more than 50 bronzes. Among them will be five new finishes, 20 new products and a new catalogue. It will also show its latest, more user-friendly website. ‘We pride ourselves on producing timeless creations that add character and warmth to any home. Whether it is through a small accent nest, an elegant coffee table, or one of our impressive extendable dining tables, there is something in the range to suit anybody looking for individuality,’ he adds. French connection
There’s more to Gautier than children’s furniture French manufacturer Gautier exhibits in Cologne, Milan, Shanghai and Brussels and now believes the time is right to return to Birmingham. ‘Our aim is to show to those many retailers who do not travel to the European exhibitions that there is a modern design-led product range available offering something different to entice the consumer to buy, and that being manufactured in France, it is available on short lead times,’ says Martyn Lincoln, Gautier UK md. ‘These are challenging times and retailers need to know they are dealing with a viable supplier. Gautier is a successful company that supports its retail partners well, and develops new products every year, that are made with passion and care.’ The family owned company based in the Vendee region of France has become one of the leading manufacturers in Europe during the past few years, employing some 900 people and with a worldwide network of more than 80 franchise showrooms in addition to its independent retail partners. Gautier was the first company in Europe to attain the three major accreditations ISO9001, ISO14001, and OHSAS 18001. Founded in 1958, the company has built on its foundations of award winning children’s furniture and now has an extensive collection for all the main areas in the home: living and dining, bedroom and home office, with children’s and teenage bedrooms still the heart of the company. Concrete foundations
COMPANY SPOTLIGHT CONCREATE
Concrete floors are now quick and easy to lay Taking the idea of concrete and the ease of fitting laminate or engineered floors has led to the creation of Concreate, a range of concrete flooring that can be installed in homes and commercial interiors without the need for conventional poured concrete systems. The subtle clean lines of the micro-bevelled panels complement most modern living areas from kitchen diners and living rooms to bedrooms and bathrooms. Installed in more traditional settings, it adds a contemporary twist. Concreate also has green credentials. The panels are produced using the latest machine technology to engineer what is ultimately a fully biodegradable natural product. There are no harmful chemicals used in the production, which is situated next to the source of the raw materials used, the bulk of which are minerals such as magnesium oxide and cement. These natural minerals are mixed and pressed with natural fibres and layers of recycled textiles. The magnesium replaces most of the limestone used in traditional production, allowing it to be processed at about half the temperature, reducing CO2 emissions. The resulting panels are set outside to air cure, giving each surface a unique patina. Once cured the panels are kilned to produce an ultra-durable floor that is both tactile and aesthetically pleasing. The aesthetic qualities are further enhanced with a machine application of Danish oil, which seals the floor and allows for straightforward maintenance. Able to absorb and maintain ambient temperature, concrete floors are ideal for underfloor heating, storing the warmth and optimising the energy efficiency of the heating system. Concreate is distributed in the UK by V4 Flooring. Concreate, tel: 01276 488 099

SHOW GUIDE COMPANY SPOTLIGHT AUTHENTIC MODELS
Left: The original Spindizzy track Below: Five models will be introduced
Take it for a spin Authentic Models will debut its first car collection Among Authentic Models’ reproduction-inspired furniture, lighting and accessories will be its new desktop car collection. The Spindizzy was a 1930’s-era American invention, as is Authentic Model’s model Bantam Midget. This was an era when men with some technical background could still build their own racing car. ‘Our interest in Spindizzies began a few years ago when founder Haring Piebenga, had a conversation with one of the model enthusiasts who seek him out from time to time,’ says Eric Hanson, Authentic Models sales manager. ‘We had never built automotive items, but this was interesting: art deco era racing with a fun history and the requisite attention to detail that customers expect from the Dutch designers. They picked up a few old models here and there, via eBay, collectors or shops: a few Dooling replicas (including the Bantam Midget) and an original BB Korn Indianapolis Racer to begin with. Then, working with the craftsmen who build its airplane collection, we launched the collection.’ The Spindizzy was an early version of model racing. Just as modelling has always attracted ship and airplane aficionados, car lovers were and still are drawn to it. The models are built from aluminium, with a cherry base, rubber wheels and wire spokes. The Bantam Midget is the first of a series of five or more to be shown at Interiors UK. View from the bed The latest beds will include pre-fitted TVs and DVD players Tapping into the growing market for TV beds, Julian Bowen is introducing 135cm and 150cm models with, unlike many others, the TV already fitted. Some versions will also include DVD players. Being unveiled at the show is the Strada bedroom which incorporates smoked high gloss finish inserts with oak frames for an attention grabbing display. New beds, in both metal and wood, will reinforce the company’s position as the biggest seller of bed frames in the marketplace. This year Julian Bowen has concentrated on space-saving dining sets. Extending leaves, drop flaps and pullout extensions are all choices – even folding chairs that hide beneath the table. Emmett Lenaghan, Julian Bowen commercial director, says: ‘2012 was an exciting year for the company with overall sales increasing by 20% over 2011. With these new products and ranges we are looking forward to significant growth during the coming 12 months and plans are afoot to make further investments in our infrastructure and supply chain to further improve service to customers. Power of three Rowico highlights a trio of ranges Rowico UK will be looking to build on the success of its non-oak finishes last year, with three new ranges. ‘2012 finally saw the early stages of a move away from things oak-centric,’ says Nick Tuck, Rowico UK md. ‘Not the beginning of the end for oak but just maybe the start of the next phase for a real alternative style and timbers.’ Tuck says sales of its Aspen shabby chic reclaimed range increased throughout the year. ‘The look is catching on and at Interiors UK we will be further strengthening our offer by introducing three distinctly different commercial ranges all featuring dining, living, home entertainment and occasional models. Lulworth is hand-painted with rustic tops, Avebury has a stained rustic finish, while Millbay is brushed and rough sawn. As with the existing ranges, the new designs will be delivered from stock. This year, TCS is looking to further spread its product offerings and extend its ranges into every area of a customer’s home, including flooring. to be complementary in style rather than uniform, any piece can be used individually or as part of a collection. Portobello creates the look of retro antiques with a hint of an industrial feel in a washed and aged white paint finish. Covering bedroom, living and dining there’s a variety of pieces including a two-drawer TV unit and small bookcase with drawer. Vintage captures the current trend for mid-century styled post-industrial use pieces such as plan chests and worktables. It is finished in a hand-distressed aged wood effect. The finish on both ranges is created by applying and cutting back between paint or lacquer layers to give the much used look, therefore every one is unique. Nanjing is Chinese retro with vibrant colours such as fuchsia, teal and aged aubergine. For Lebus Upholstery, the show will see the most radical product launch in the company’s recent history, according to Karl Walker, Lebus md. ‘Massive investment in our design and development has produced a stunning collection of design-led upholstery which gives the Lebus brand a new dimension for the future. Maximising on the ability of the UK-based manufacturing facility to create shape, value and a renowned commercial product, the 2013 collection sets a new benchmark for innovative, stylish and highly competitive upholstery,’ he says. Sherborne Upholstery will expand its chair and sofa offer as it unveils its 2013 collection. The Children’s Bedroom Company will debut the Elfin collection including high-sleeper and mid-sleeper beds, and the Woodcock adult range. Wiemann is introducing 11 ranges alongside improvements and additions to established designs such as Luxor, Miami, Brooklyn, Como, Dakar and Dubai. Promotional ranges for 2013 being launched at the NEC include: Honey, with a hinged door wardrobe in rustic oak with Havanna finish door and drawer front combination options; and Meran, a hinged

Samantha Boyd, Tarkett national sales manager, is pleased Tarkett flooring was chosen. ‘It’s an excellent choice that will benefit both those building the homes and the eventual buyers. PROTECTION AND WARRANTIES
In pursuit of happiness No-one likes dealing with complaints. Unhappy customers can damage a retailer’s hard fought reputation and it takes time and money to resolve claims, regardless of their validity. Interiors Monthly spoke to three companies keen to make life easier for retailers
Castelan – benefits of outsourcing Castelan offers end-to-end customer service that not only complements the retailer’s own service offering but provides products that enhance the transaction value for each customer. Castelan incorporates the brands of Premier Care and Furniture Care Network which is the largest, independent and fully employed network of furniture technicians in the UK. Premier Care offers protection products through its warranties along with care products developed by Uniters. With retailers keen to keep costs to a minimum, many will look to deal with service issues in-house, but Richard Gretton, Castelan commercial director, says this could be more expensive. ‘To outsource service sounds like an option that should cost more money but, in fact, the opposite is true. By drawing on a national network of fully employed technicians, our clients are able to ensure an agreed standard of service is achieved, access claim information in real time online and expect uniformed staff in liveried vans that deliver a consistent service throughout the UK. All of this is expensive to do in-house but is

affordable when you can tap into an established and trusted network,’ he says. By combining care and protection plans, retailers can cover problems they might not otherwise have a solution to. If a customer has a spill or a rip the retailer is not liable, but the customer may still expect some assistance from them. Gretton says if a protection plan was sold at the point of sale the customer can have peace of mind that such issues will be dealt with. Castelan has invested in its IT infrastructure to enhance security and performance and in telephony to make the customer contact experience more
efficient. ‘This is on top of our investment in 85 liveried vehicles giving a fantastic first impression to customers as they come into contact with Furniture Care Network,’ Gretton says. Claims have remained fairly consistent in frequency and nature with January being its busiest month. ‘Customer expectation has increased and that is why we have sought and been granted FSA authorisation. We are totally committed to providing a fantastic service that is underpinned by the guiding principle of treating customers fairly,’ he adds. Visit: www.castelangroup.com

PROTECTION AND WARRANTIES
Guardsman – tailoring service to needs Guardsman offers furniture protection plans for upholstered fabric and leather items covering chairs and suites; dining and bedroom furniture covering cupboards, cabinets, tables, chairs, wardrobes, occasional tables made from all types of materials including wood, marble, stone, onyx, glass and mirror finishes; and carpets. The plans offer five years’ coverage for stains, accidental damage or structural faults after the expiry of the manufacturer’s warranty. Each retailer decides what they want to sell to their consumer base and Guardsman has a national network of expert technicians and cleaning specialists to deal with claims. ‘Guardsman’s consumer satisfaction surveys confirm that we consistently deliver very high levels of customer service. The independent status of the technician network ensures that the technician continues to operate at the highest standards of quality and service to protect their livelihood. In the event of underperformance, the technician knows their status as a Guardsman technician would be immediately threatened,’ says David Wright, Guardsman md. He says the state of the economy has had little effect on its business, as shoppers continue to see the value of the plans. ‘Some consumers may hesitate but it isn’t something that appears to be having a major impact for our business. Our retailers’ conversion rates are remaining constant and in several cases are showing growth, so I think consumers are keen to protect the investments that they make. After all, accidents happen in a recession as well as during economic growth. A key factor in this is the excellent and continual training we provide to our customers via our dedicated network of Guardsman account managers,’ he says. He says business has increased during the past 12 months but acknowledges that it is a tough trading environment, so the company is doing what it can to support retail customers. It has reworked its POS materials and training

programme and launched a series of videos which explain what a protection plan covers and how consumers can make a claim. Wright says the company has invested in finding out more about who the furniture protection plan consumer is, understanding why they buy into the service and what their expectations are.
‘We are using the results of these research projects to shape our service, our communications and our product offering. We think it is very important to add value to our customers by ensuring what they want to sell is actually in line with what consumers want,’ he adds. Visit: www.guardsman.co.uk

The Furniture Ombudsman – independent support The Furniture Ombudsman (TFO) is an independent, non-statutory body regulated by a voluntary standards board. It provides alternative dispute resolution solutions for consumers and retailers in the furniture and home improvement industry and aims to raise standards, improve service and inspire consumer confidence. TFO has a pool of members that extends to about 4,500 UK furniture and home improvement outlets. All of its full members pledge to abide by a code of practice that bestows additional rights

on the consumers who shop with them. Last year marked 20 years since TFO was established, and when it dealt with its 40,000th case. In the last two years, membership has increased by about 30%, and includes well-known names such as B&Q, Homebase, Magnet, Harvey Jones Kitchens, DFS, Tesco, Laura Ashley, Dreams and Bensons for Beds. TFO’s team grew last year with the addition of senior adjudicator Judith Turner, a specialist in alternative dispute resolution, who was previously employed
as a solicitor with a city law firm. Jon Walters, TFO service delivery manager says: ‘We handled around 1,350 cases in 2012 – the same as in 2011, despite an increase in members. Use of our advice line, to which all our members have access, and which helps them understand the law, has increased year on year, and we also carried out more consumer law training than in any previous year. This ensures we are able to help raise industry standards and, in turn, inspire consumer confidence.’ Visit: www.thefurnitureombudsman.org

and play The latest Stressless designs target smaller living rooms and home offices Ekornes has built on the success of its Stressless E200 and E300 models by using its ErgoAdapt system on its latest introduction, the Stressless E40. The E40 has the same internal system as its family members, but with a slightly narrower seat it is easier to place in smaller rooms. ErgoAdapt allows the cushion of the sofa to tilt down automatically the moment you sit, placing your body in the correct sitting position. If you lie down the cushion automatically elevates to a flat position. For optimal comfort, additional neck and back support for the Long Seat and the corner are available. The Stressless E40 is available as a chair, two-seater, three-seater, Long Seat and corner. The Stressless sofa offer has been expanded with the Liberty sofa, designed to match the Voyager recliner. Available in two and three-seater versions, Liberty has high and low back options. It has also expanded its office chair offer to 10 models with the introduction of Magic Office. Building on the Magic recliner, the

chair is being promoted as ‘Comfort on wheels’. The Stressless Plus system adjusts the chair’s headrest as the user reclines, supporting their neck and synchronising with the lumbar support. Its sleep function is activated with one simple movement to lay the headrest flat. The height of the chair is adjusted by the handle under the seat and after setting the chair’s optimum position and setting the Stressless wheel on the chair, the user can change sitting position by using their body weight. Magic Office coordinates with the wider Stressless sofa offer, particularly Wizard and Legend, so it looks at home in a home office. Ekornes has chosen orange as its signal colour for 2013 and will use Paloma Clementine Leather in its marketing for Stressless. ‘The choice of Clementine as signal colour for 2013 is based on a wide spectre of colour prognosis for the coming season, where orange is dominating in a palette inspired by colours found in nature,’ says the company. This year’s marketing will see Stressless
chairs and recliners placed in a stressful environment with the background in black and white and the upholstery highlighted in colour. The 2013 marketing support package now includes a new comprehensive CRM programme for all UK stockists that relays individualised communication – branded Stressless World – to all UK customers. Stressless World aims to inform consumers about the company, its products and further enhance the brand’s reputation. ‘I am thrilled with our new communication concept, it’s a definite step change and initial reaction from our partners has been fantastic. The new strategy and new creative will mean that we, and in turn our retail partners, are in the strongest possible position for 2013,’ says Lee Bagnall, Ekornes UK md. ‘Despite tough conditions, our retail partners state that they are pleased with their Stressless sales which remain stronger compared with many other brands.’ Its latest TV advertisement coincides with the start of winter sales. Encore-Feather: another great performing cushion from
Fibreline
When Fibreline launched Encore in 2010 it could not have foreseen the success of its innovative seating system. Encore-Fibre has the look and feel of fibre with the recovery and durability of foam and has been awarded the FIRA Gold seal of approval. In FIRA tests it outperformed all other fibre cushions. Now Fibreline’s innovative seating system has been expanded. Fibreline has developed Encore-Feather, a feather version of its award winning Encore-Fibre seat cushion. The new cushion has a feather-soft feel and looks similar to a feather cushion but has much greater recovery and durability. It is constructed using grade-A duck feather with a high quality feather-proof case to prevent feather percolation and has a pocketed duvet construction top, front and bottom to ensure consistency.
138
Interiors Monthly January 2013
At the cushion’s core, high performance seating foam is used for long lasting performance. A fouryear guarantee against flattening is standard. An Encore seat cushion has the added advantage of being lighter than a similar sized feather or fibre cushion. It is therefore easier to pick up and plump. In fact, altogether less frequent plumping is required as the simple action of regular turning of the cushion is enough to maintain its performance. Why has Encore been developed? Fibreline has recognised the need for a new advanced seat cushion product. Over
the years feather and fibre seat cushions have had a bad reputation because they often went flat during use. This resulted in customer complaints and costs for the retailer and manufacturer alike. Encore has been developed to solve this problem. Using its extensive knowledge, experience and expertise, Fibreline set itself the goal of producing the holy grail of seating cushions. It wanted to produce a seat cushion that had the look, feel and sit of a feather or fibre seat, with much better recovery and performance. Furthermore it wanted to be able to guarantee the performance. This it has now accomplished with Encore-Fibre and Encore-Feather. For more information, visit: www.encorecushion.co.uk
Established in 1982, Fibreline was one of the first companies to manufacture carded fibre cushions for use in the UK upholstery market. Over the years Fibreline has grown to be a leading supplier of not only polyester fibre, but also feather and foam cushions. As a manufacturer of all three fillings it has been at the leading edge of developing a range of combination fillings for designers trying to offer something different to the norm. Fibreline intends to continue to be innovators in this market using its skills and the latest technology to stay at the forefront of cushion design. Today, Fibreline can offer its customers unparalleled quality not only in fibre but also in foam and feather fillings. Customer service Fibreline understands the needs of the industry and is geared to satisfying those needs. Whether it be quick and accurate prototype production, or meeting very specific delivery instructions, you can rest easy in the knowledge that Fibreline’s experience and professionalism will not let you down. Quality products All Fibreline products are made to tight specifications and undergo stringent quality checks at each stage of production. The company only uses quality materials from recognised suppliers. So, whether it is one or 1,000 cushions you order, you know they will be of a consistently high quality. TRENDS
Exciting effects Textile giant Trevira has identified four key trends for the year ahead The main trends for interiors 2013/14 stimulate and excite. Classic black makes a sophisticated, masculine appearance with highlights that dispel any dark associations. Three-dimensional effects bring a clean, bright impact to mind, with a clearly structured effect that is anything but plain. Comfort continues to play a large role, incorporated in high quality fabrics via surfaces of rustic charm. The colour spectrum emanates
warmth and harmony. The four walls around us provide insights into our personality, revealing who we are but, more often, who we would like to be. The desire to feel good coincides with the wish to present oneself. How do others see me in my home? How can I create an image? In these days of digital social networking there is increasing emphasis on revealing that which is private, to be
assessed by the community. In the process one should not lose sight of individual needs. An ambience geared towards oneself has the strongest attraction, thus fulfilling its most important function: to be a home. One’s own ideas do not come from any catalogue, handwriting always remains unique. This is especially true of the way we shape our own four walls. Visit: www.trevira.de
Don’t call it black! Dark energies dominate the universe. Supernatural and galactic like a real fairy tale, no one can take hold of them. The lights of distant galaxies flash against the sky – who knows the fifth element? Colours: black, aubergine, violet and deep brown emerge mystically. They are joined by bronze, pearl grey and silver, bringing a romantic twinkling of the eyes to the masculine theme. Designs/fabrics: Through their looks and handle, fabrics radiate dominance and power in equal measure. Architectonic severity is incorporated into the weave structures or prints. Shiny surfaces with lurex effects are set against velvet and brocade-like fabrics, while embroidery adds a decorative touch.
Don’t think twice! The film in the head starts with sudden intensity. Cool and masculine, the pulse quickens with the impressions. Facades reflect a reality that is technical and clear and yet cannot be grasped – and all in 3D. Colours: The colour spectrum stretches from a cool green-blue, through a dark emerald to cobalt green. A combination of royal blue, ultra marine and medium blue produces a total picture that excites. A pale grey provides the necessary neutral touch. Designs/fabrics: There is a clean-cut look to the fabrics, which are, thanks to their technical qualities, free of opulence. Restrained designs give way to film-like sheens, to coatings and lacquer surfaces, producing 3D effects.

TRENDS
Don’t stop me now! Levity and yearning bubble up reaching undreamt of heights. I take what I like, for all to see. My self-confidence will not take no for an answer. I do what I think is right and fight for what is mine. That’s the way I want it! Colours: Gossamer-like shades such as lime green, pink or violet lilac present a fascinating contrast to the clarity of the whole theme. Effective use is made of radiant kiwi that can glisten as sharply as neon, while beige makes for gentle transitions. Designs/fabrics: Fabrics are soft and flowing, with little texture. Fibre yarns of various types permit a light structure, while designs have a playful, linear impact. Striking prints display graphic patterns, both all-over and in stripes.
Don’t stay alone! Nature the energy-source: coming and going, constantly changing – at times too early and often too late as well. Autumn again, still a warming experience, and then all is over. Hopefully but a brief parting. Colours: A loose combination of warm colours sets the tone. Tile red meets with bright cashmere shades, ruddy brown joins off-white, light sand nuances harmonise with wood green and petrol. Designs/fabrics: Fabrics have a rustic effect and are highly luxurious, with a soft textile feel. Structure comes from coarse yarns; naps, melanges and bouclé emphasise the total impact that endures.

KITCHEN Warendorf is combining kitchen and living spaces
What’s cooking? Light, space, splashes of colour and textured surfaces are just some of the key trends in kitchen design for 2013, according to retailer Kitchens International. The muted conservatism of recent years is giving way to more bold designs with hightech fixtures, clever designs and the use of more natural materials, especially glass. ‘Colour is back in small doses with accented coloured units for certain areas and combined with greys, whites and blacks. These are often finished in silk rather than gloss so it isn’t overpowering,’ says Kieron Bell, KI designer, who won the UK KBSA Kitchen Designer of the Year award and KBSA Designer of the Year award in 2012. Wood veneer and heavy textured furniture is also in, creating a tactile and softer look which blends well with the furnishings and interiors of the rest of the house. Bell says favoured designs for 2013 will still be for the more minimalist look with a huge array of handle-less units and linear designs. The traditional base and wall units are fading with designs evolving into the living areas with floating units, open shelving and more living-type furniture becoming the norm. Dining tables or seating areas are being incorporated into the kitchen design allowing designers to have a greater influence on the whole living area. ‘Kitchens evolve in terms of design rather than dramatic change but the trend is for a bolder look as the cautious conservatism is being slowly left behind,’ he says. As lighter, open plan designs evolve, glass is playing a major part in kitchens for 2013.

Knotholes, cracks and a brushed surface give Leicht’s oak front Xylo a gnarled aged wood look which coordinates with Mohair on the shelf unit
KITCHENS INTERNATTIONAL
Gardens are being blended with the interiors with walls of glass doors so there is a clear flow between the kitchen and the outside. Glass also features heavily in splashbacks, cupolas and even worktops or doors. Reflective light provides another dimension of light when times are gloomy. For traditional kitchens the look for 2013 is a combination of painted and timber finishes, again lightening the look and avoiding over-fussy designs. Wood, as a natural and sustainable material, provides a relaxed and calm interior. Kitchen manufacturer Leicht is using its latest retro colours – Curcuma: a warm, mustard yellow; Saffron: a bold orange; and Petrol: a fresh blue-green – as accents in blocks or areas and combining them with its natural colours. Mohair, a warm grey has been added to the natural choice. For 2013 Leicht also has new materials for its door fronts. Xylo is a gnarled oak effect that offers an aged wood look in four shades. Stratos is a melamine resin covered laminate front which comes in a wavy ‘surf’ texture or ‘patch’ a chequered type surface. For many of the160 exhibitors at LivingKitchen which runs alongside IMM Cologne later this month, the trend towards open-plan kitchens continues unabated. Seamless transitions between kitchen and living space, generous spaces and kitchen furniture designs: virtually all kitchen furniture manufacturers will present kitchens that unite cooking and living. Warendorf, for example, has made this development its motto for its new range: ‘living room format kitchens’ is the concept in which high end islands with glossy and low cabinets are combined to create living spaces, ensuring the kitchen becomes the central point of modern living. Others will present room solutions, offering shelving, cabinet, tables and chairs to harmonise with the kitchen design that could also be used in the dining room. New designs will embrace materials including glass, ceramic and wood. In many areas, glass dictates the look. The natural appearance of the overall kitchen also remains a trend, with the use of sustainable materials including ceramic, glass, stainless steel and wood. Visit: www.leicht.de

Repeat performance The AIS buying group hopes to repeat the success of its first non-members show Associated Independent Stores is to repeat the inclusion of non-AIS member retailers at its January exhibition and opening hours have been extended. The buying group will have two days for group members (18-19 January) followed by three for members and non-members (20-22 January). ’Those three days run concurrently with Interiors UK at the NEC and gives all buyers another reason to visit Birmingham during that time, especially as the proximity of the AIS show at Cranmore Park, Solihull to the NEC certainly makes it very easy to take in both shows,’ says Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director. While it will host AIS suppliers that can only be seen at Cranmore Park, Mallinson is keen to stress the event is not competing with Interiors UK. ‘The show is presenting different manufacturers in a different environment where those exhibiting and visiting will enjoy a more intimate and relaxed buying atmosphere. help our portfolio of suppliers maximise the number of retailers they see during that key decision making period, so it is more efficient for everybody involved to hold it at the same time,’ he says. ‘In addition to the attractions of the Cranmore Park setting, those exhibiting are not at the NEC, so if retailers that aren’t AIS members want to see those companies’ new designs in January, then they need to make time to visit the show.’ The event will again fill the ground floor of Cranmore Park. Exhibitors include Actona, Carlton Furniture, Cavendish, Cintique, Contrast, Corndell, Decoro, Habufa, Himolla, JC & MP Smith, Marinelli, MTE, Nathan, O&G, Quaratta Qualita, Sutcliffe, Tetrad, Wade Upholstery, Whitemeadow and Wossner. ‘What buyers will find when they visit Cranmore Park is a good mix of contemporary, transitional and traditional product ranges that can only be seen here,’ Mallinson adds. ‘With the evidence of 2012 to go on we are confident that The Furniture Show is needed in the industry and anticipate it becoming a regular fixture in the show calendar, not only in 2013, but for many more years ahead.’ The show’s extended opening hours are: 20 January: 8am – 5pm, 21 January 8am – 6pm and 22 January 8am – 5pm. Reaching higher notes Himolla is looking to continue its UK expansion at the show After adding to its UK stockist base last year by more than 20 to 117 and its Cumuly product range rapidly becoming one of its UK bestsellers just months after launch, Himolla will again be exhibiting at Cranmore Park. This year it is looking to increase its stockists to 140, helped by its latest designs and consumer marketing campaigns. ‘We make continuous efforts in model development with absolutely no brothers and sisters of existing models. Instead we have well-thought adaptations of our product portfolio including wall-hugger recliner sofas, home theatre, and lift and rise chairs with coordinating sofa groups,’ says Mark Litterst, Himolla UK export manager. This year sees further focus on individual chairs, such as the new Easy Swing family and crossover products including the Cumuly sofas with matching Cumuly and Zerostress chairs. Easy Swing has three models: Sinatra, Crosby and Armstrong. All models are available in small, medium and large sizes with five different bases: wooden plate, stainless steel, aluminium, wood and stainless steel, and covered.

Los Angeles is the first wall-hugger design in the Cumuly range which has also been expanded with the introduction of the Humber and Chester lift and rise models. The Hollywood home cinema model has Cumuly recliner functions in all elements and centre-pieces with storage. It has an optional charging socket for smart phones and is also available as a standard sofa. The Nuvano by Impala fabric cover, which can be cleaned with water, has also been introduced. A consumer marketing campaign for 2013 will focus on the Himolla brand, rather than the Cumuly and Zerostress ranges, with a mix of national advertising and local marketing in cooperation with stockists. ‘We cannot change the general economic situation. Instead we will continue our hard work and follow the path we have decided to go. We have clearly outlined our strategy and know exactly where we want to be three years from now,’ adds Litterst. Sit on an animal Looking for something that little bit different? Spanish artist Maximo Riera may be able to help. He has created the Animal Chair Collection, including elephant, lion, octopus, rhino, walrus and whale designs. ‘Each one is designed to bring together the complex art of human design and nature’s splendour, in perfect harmony. I chose the chair because it is an everyday object, something taken as common and banal in our lives,’ he says. ‘Each creation in the collection retains the animal’s natural vitality while being totally biologically accurate in their appearance.’ You may need to sit down when ordering though – prices range from £35,000 for the octopus up to £65,000 for the whale. Minimalist Side
Winning designs Rachael Gartside, an office administrator from London, is the winner of Dwell’s Design for Dwell competition. The chain will put her Minimalist Side table into production as part of its 2013 spring/ summer collection. On her inspiration for the design Rachael credits her love of clean living. ‘I designed the table to allow items to be stored in a space-saving yet visual way while freeing up valuable tabletop surface. The design has been kept minimal and clean, showing off the curve of the dip to its full potential. ‘I certainly wasn’t expecting to win as the competition was really strong with some great designs involved. It is always nice to know someone else can see potential in your work and even more so when it’s on such a scale as this,’ she adds. Gartside also won a computer and £1,000. ● As a result of a another competition, Marty Woodland, a student at Norton Radstock College, Bath, will also see his design manufactured. TV presenter, Kevin McCloud selected Woodland’s writing desk as the winner in Charltons Furniture’s 2012 Design Award. The desk will be on show at Interiors UK and Woodland will receive £500.
