CELEBRATING God’s Goodness, 20 Years & Counting…

A ● ● ● ● ●

t the dawn of 2011, no one at Good Neighbors anticipated all the goodness that God had in store for us. Throughout the year, his blessings were frequent, sometimes surprising, and always encouraging. For example: Two exceptional new directors joined our Board Corporate donations significantly exceeded expectations Our fall fundraising banquet was our most successful ever Three outstanding operations managers signed on to oversee our home repair projects The Philadelphia Foundation generously awarded funding targeted at increasing our organizational effectiveness

I could go on, but you get the idea. As our donors and volunteers already know, it’s truly heart warming to be part of a ministry that God is showering with blessings! So this year, we’re taking some time to reflect upon and celebrate 20 years of God’s faithfulness to Good Neighbors. Then, keeping these blessings in mind, we look ahead to 2012 and beyond, more confident than ever that “He who began a good work in us will be faithful to bring it to completion.” (Phil 1:6) I invite you to join us in this important Kingdom work. As you do, I’m confident that you too will personally experience God’s goodness. There is real joy in serving others – so sign up and help us celebrate! Rob Ellis Executive Director

OPERATIONS 2011 SUMMARY

D

uring 2011 Good Neighbors was pleased to serve 72 families in southern Chester County, (including 25 who were new). Along the way we accumulated over 10,000 volunteer hours from dozens of individuals, churches, community groups, and businesses. In addition we were blessed to have two long-time volunteers sign on as project managers, and a third come on board as our new Operations Director. With this incredible team, we’re planning to serve even more needy families in 2012 and beyond. That said, we are mindful that it is you, our faithful supporters and prayer warriors, who make this ministry possible. Thank you; please continue! Also be sure to read our newsletters, visit our updated website (goodneighborshomerepair.org), “like” us on facebook, and follow us on twitter. Help us spread the word! As always, we welcome opportunities to visit your church, business, or organization to share our story with your friends and colleagues. In His Service, Jay Malthaner Operations Director

ABUNDANT BLESSINGS

I

n 2011, Good Neighbors received abundant blessings, providing a solid foundation to continue making homes warmer, safer, drier, and healthier for years to come. Our new Executive Director, Rob Ellis oversaw a number of key administrative improvements, including migration to a new donor management system, project management documentation, major website improvements, translation of outreach materials into Spanish, and development of an engaging and informative presentation (request a showing). We received a grant from The Philadelphia Foundation to improve our

organizational effectiveness, and the Board has already started training with expert consultants. We were blessed with two new board members. Bob Johnson, who’s served as summer youth camp director for years, joined the Board and assumed the duties of treasurer. We also welcomed Robalee Deike, who brings significant YWCA fund raising experience. We were blessed with the ongoing faithfulness of our volunteers and donors, which allowed us to continue restoring homes while remaining financially stable amid difficult economic circumstances. We look forward to another year of giving (and receiving!) blessings in 2012. Our goals for this year include a significant increase in fundraising and implementation of a partnership program with area churches. I remain in awe of the blessings that God has provided and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve. If you know of homeowners in need of our services, please contact us. RJ Scaggs Board Chair

TREASURER’S REPORT

G

ood Neighbors successfully met our 2011 fiscal challenges, while starting to implement our succession plan as some key leaders retire, (founder: Jay Malthaner, and office manager: Danny Wigley). Simultaneously, we are expanding our capacity to make homes warmer, safer, dryer and healthier. Key financial milestones for 2011: • Hired Rob Ellis as new Executive Director • Secured Bob Johnson as new Treasurer • Granted $23,000 from The Philadelphia Foundation (to support succession planning, fund-raising and board development) • Ended 2011 with a $4,100 budget surplus With hard work, we offset cuts in government-funded grants and a sluggish economy to achieve ordinary income of $218,000 versus $236,000 last year, all while keeping expenses flat at $214,000. EXPENSE

2012 will be another critical expansion year as we: • Add three part-time salaries to the budget (Operations Director and two Project Managers) • Purchase a new van and replace the old van’s engine Thankfully we already received a generous grant to cover the van expenses. God does provide! To fund the new Director and Managers, we set our 2012 budget at $282,000. Please pray that we will meet this stretch goal so we can serve even more needy homeowners. In Christ’s service, Bob Johnson, Treasurer

YOUTH CAMP SETS NEW RECORDS! Mentoring our youth…

All hands on deck!

Laboring together

G

ood Neighbors’ leaders and volunteers work year ‘round to make homes warmer, safer, drier and healthier; but the most active week of 2011 was during our 12th annual Youth Camp, July 1722. Highlights include: ● 5 homes repaired simultaneously ● 55 students, 14 adult leaders & 7 local youth groups participated ● 50 skilled volunteers provided oversight, guidance and training ● 43 kitchen volunteers prepared & served 1300+ meals ● 5330 volunteer hours were contributed! ● 102 degrees F. temperatures were cheerfully endured! ● Uplifting youth program (by Andrew and Delina Joyce - Kennett Square Garage) Our deepest appreciation goes to Avondale Presbyterian Church for use of their excellent facilities. We are also grateful to the YMCA’s in Kennett and Jennersville for use of their showers each day. Also, special thanks to New Garden Township for use of their park and pavilion. We look forward to another great summer camp in 2012 serving local families in need.

MISSION MOMENT

E

verything we do is aimed at one purpose: making homes warmer, safer, drier and healthier for qualified homeowners. We strive to understand, and then meet, all the needs of our homeowners whenever possible. It’s easy to see how our “hammer and nails” efforts make homes warmer, safer and drier... that’s what naturally happens as we replace windows, build ramps, and fix roofs. But work that makes homes “healthier” is often less obvious. For example, mold remediation, pest removal, and air filtration are fairly common health issues, but sometimes we face more unusual situations. Recently, after qualifying a local low-income family for some standard repairs we learned that, for almost a decade, the family had been unable to drink their well water because it was dirty and tasted bad. Their solution, though pricey, was to buy lots of bottled water. Thankfully, when we asked Powell Pump and Well Co. to test

Healthy and happy!

the water, they confirmed there were no bacteria problems. Then after donating and installing a special water treatment system they confirmed that the well water was drinkable. Pauline’s picture above (what a smile) shows just how happy (and healthy!) they are now… from something as basic as knowing they can drink their own tap water. We’re grateful for your part in helping us bless others.

HEARTFELT THANKS TO OUR 2011 Our 20th birthday is almost here! Ever since Good Neighbors’ founding in 1992, God’s goodness to this home repair ministry has been unmistakable. We also owe a debt of gratitude to our 2011 Major Donors and Supporters (including those who gave significant Gifts In Kind, as well as our many contributors who wish to remain anonymous). With your faithful help – and God’s rich blessings – we plan to keep on “Repairing Homes & Restoring Hope” for many more birthdays!
