Steve Callaert Account Manager
Steve is our new team member. The 47-year-old, who has dual US and Swiss nationality, boasts many years of experience and is eminently qualified for the position of Account Manager. His key tasks include looking after Interxion’s carrier and ISP customers, expanding the carrier portfolio in Switzerland, and helping with the product development for tailored offers targeted at this important customer group. In addition, he also looks after the emerging e-health market. “The growing level of interconnectivity among customers and the increasing overlap in requirements in terms of infrastructure, communication, security and other services make this an exciting challenge,” says Steve. “My job is to spot trends early on and to fully grasp the business model of customers and their requirements.”

As a study by IDC and Interxion has shown, the trend is very much towards outsourcing. According to the study the sustained demand for outsourced data centre services is set to rise by an annual 23% in the next four years in the European core markets of Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and France. This is the equivalent of a growth in these countries of CHF 725 m. Rising energy costs on the one and, more cost-effective IT budgets on the other. A challenge with which data centre operators are faced also in 2010. According to the latest Gartner research, companies have to expect a rise in energy prices of up to 10% this year. And yet, for most companies methods for ascertaining energy efficiency are still of secondary importance, and many IT managers simply do not know how much energy their data centres consume. Christian Stolte, Systems Engineer with APC by Schneider Electric, has to say on the subject: “While energy-efficient technologies are now readily available, they are still not sufficiently taken into account. Against the backdrop of rising energy prices it is essential for most companies to keep a check on energy costs by using the appropriate tools and procedures. The availability of analysis functions and indicative data on current and historical power consumption, as well as the expenditure for individual subsystems is a precondition for enabling companies to spot opportunities to optimise their energy efficiency and control their costs. It’s a step which is certainly worthwhile, especially given the rise in energy costs.” On this basis measures can be adopted to lower energy consumption. APC by Schneider Electric has drawn up the following four-point plan for companies:
1. Optimise by sizing correctly Poor energy efficiency in data centres is often due to oversizing and obsolete UPS technology. To counter inefficient oversizing, decision-makers need to respond quickly to growing UPS power requirements and opt for modern technologies that require less energy. What’s more, not every UPS is suitable for every area. That is why APC provides UPS systems for all requirements: from home users to server rooms, small data centres to production facilities and large data centres. 2. Identify power consumption trends Once the information on the data centre’s power consumption is available, informed decisions can be made on the ideal dimensioning of an IT environment, thereby lowering the overall running costs. APC’s Infra-Struxure Central management software for example is used to ascertain unused capacities. Data centre operators also obtain data on the age and status of their systems, as well as historical data on the energy consumption and costs. 3. Determine physical values at rack level Local and remote monitoring of physical values such as temperature and air humidity should be made directly at the relevant location, i.e. the data centre cabinets. A centralised monitoring software can then be used to determine and control the power supply, air conditioning and security in real time at aisle and rack level, right across the system.

Cool correctly According to Gartner, in 2011 rack and aisle cooling systems will be the most widespread strategy for IT infrastructure with high power density. However, the right cooling system begins with the conceptual design for the infrastructure. Reducing the spacing between cooling source and heat load helps minimise the mix of air, which in turn prevents hotspots and increases availability. The temperature at rack and aisle level can also be monitored with sensors, providing the user with real-time on the precise heat distribution on the premises. On average a typical company site will experience around 15 power outages a year. UPS systems provide an emergency power supply for a limited amount of time and help to prevent data loss. The UPS runtime should be at least as long as the systems it protects need to shut down correctly or until an additional emergency power unit kicks in. If data is still being processed during the outage, documents or system structures may be damaged. Single or multiple workstations can be efficiently protected using offline models. Line-interactive UPS systems are the systems in most widespread use. This is down to their high reliability and the fact that they can be mounted in 19� racks. Double-conversion UPS systems from 1 kVA upwards or in larger

installations from 10 kVA upwards can be used cost-effectively and ensure outstanding output voltage quality. Finally, UPS systems with delta conversion come into their own in larger installations. This technology’s high efficiency levels results in considerable savings in energy and overall operating costs. It is only with the right technology that the required level of availability can be achieved at economically justifiable costs. Long-term viability is also a key aspect. Many companies are familiar with the scenario where capacity and availability requirements increase much faster than expected. Opting for the right UPS and infrastructure solution offers the ability to respond flexibly to new requirements.
