ights, Santa Claus and his elves, fireworks and New Years resolutions… it’s beginning to look a-lot like the holiday season! With decorated trees and the ball dropping on New Year’s Eve, plenty of festive parties and events will keep the hospitality industry and locals cheerful this holiday season. Kick off the holidays on Sunday, December 8th. Setting sail at 5:30 pm is the Pompano Holiday Boat Parade, which travels along the Intracoastal from Pompano Beach to Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach. If you love the holidays and seeing the lights, then you won’t want to miss the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade! This year the boat parade will be bigger and better launching on December 14th at 6 pm, with 100 brilliantly illuminated boats sailing down the New River and up the Intracoastal Waterway to Lake Santa Barbara. For more information on this event, visit http://www. winterfestparade.com. Mark your calendars for Garden of Lights. Running through December 22nd at Flamingo Garden’s Botanical Gardens and Historic Wray Home in Davie, be amazed by thousands of lights and decorations while holiday music fills the air. Weekends in December, guests can enjoy concerts and performances, visits from Santa, and other holiday fun. Garden of Lights is complimentary with paid daytime admission, or $5 after 5pm to view the lights and light show only. For more information, visit 6 • ITB • December 2013

http://www.flamingogardens.org. Even though it doesn’t snow in South Florida, that doesn’t mean Santa won’t make a stop here. Don’t miss Santa on the Beach on Friday, December 20th at 12:45 pm at 1100 Seabreeze Blvd. Santa Claus and his elves will make their annual visit to Fort Lauderdale Beach and will hand out candy canes and holiday treats! Make sure to tell the jolly Santa what you want for Christmas! Like to dress up like Santa or his elves or reindeer? Then, SantaCon Fort Lauderdale is the event for you! SantaCon is a mass gathering of people dressed as Santa Claus and in other holiday costumes parading around Fort Lauderdale bars and restaurants. On Saturday, December 21st, a holiday-clad group will spread cheer around town starting at 6 pm at Mangos on Las Olas. They will

make stops and enjoy drink specials at other bars on Las Olas and at 2nd Street in downtown Fort Lauderdale. For more information, visit http://santaconftl.com. Be sure to make your New Year’s Eve plans now! Everyone will be out and counting down to the New Year on December 31st! Downtown Fort Lauderdale on 2nd Street, A1A by the Elbow Room, Hard Rock and many other area nightclubs will be having New Year’s Eve parties and watching the big ball drop. After you have celebrated your December holiday traditions of gift giving, hearty feasts, shopping and more with family and friends, it’s the biggest party night of the year- New Year’s Eve! On December 31st, it’s time to bid farewell to 2013 and the past, and welcome 2014 and a new year of possibilities. Many South Florida bars, nightclubs and restaurants will be offering champagne toasts during the countdown to the New Year and fun parties. The Downtown Countdown will take place on Tuesday, December 31st from 4:30 pm to 3 am on SW 2nd Street in downtown Fort Lauderdale. This is the City of Fort Lauderdale’s premier New Year’s Eve celebration. As one of the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations in Florida, the free street festival is full of fun and excitement. Revelers will crowd downtown Fort Lauderdale along S.W. 2nd Street, between S.W. 2nd Avenue and S.W. 5th Avenue, to wait with anticipation for the lighted ball to drop at midnight. Live music kicks off at 9 p.m. for the crowd to enjoy and dance the night away, complete with champagne toasts and party hats! Be sure to enjoy the gift of fun with your friends!

Why did you choose bartending? There’s a funny story to why I started bartending. My mom used to bartend and she did it most of my life! So when I was in grade school and my teacher asked “what do you want to be when you’re older?” I said a bartender, because my mom did it and because I’m in love with the movie Coyote Ugly! When I got the opportunity to start bartending at Hooters, I took it! Now I work at Cowboys Saloon and I’m so excited I do!!! What is the most ordered drink? My most ordered drink would be either Bud Light bottle or Jack Daniels and Coke! What is your favorite drink to make? My favorite drink to make is a Lynchburg Lemonade! My best advice for a new bartender would be to just have fun with it! Don’t take it too seriously because as long as you flash your customers a smile and have a great personality everything will run smoothly!! What if anything would you change about your work environment? I honestly love my work environment and I would change nothing about it!!! I always have fun at work and I think that’s something that everyone wants!!

second installment of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The blockbuster begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way, Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. Another film, Out of the Furnace, from Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, is a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so - with nothing left to lose - Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother. The impres-

sive cast of Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson are rounded out by Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard. In Homefront, hoping to escape his troubled past, former DEA agent Phil Broker (Jason Statham) moves to a seemingly quiet backwater town in the bayou with his daughter. However, he finds anything but quiet there, for the town is riddled with an underbelly of drugs and violence. When sociopathic druglord Gator Bodine (James Franco) puts Broker and his young daughter in harm’s way, Broker is forced back into action to save her and their new home. Hobbit fans will be running to the theatres for the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It is the second installment of a three-part film series based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel, The Hobbit, beginning with An Unexpected Journey (2012) and set to conclude with There and Back Again (2014). The three films together act as prequels to Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film series. The storyline continues the events of An Unexpected Journey, in which the hobbit Bilbo Baggins travels with the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield into the Kingdom of Erebor, taking them through Mirkwood, Esgaroth, and Dale to combat with the dragon Smaug.

Mercedes-Benz Fort Lauderdale MAD for MODS Gala raises

$400,000 BY staff reports

M

useum President and CEO, Kim Cavendish, announced today that the MAD for MODS Gala held Saturday, November 16, 2013, raised nearly $400,000 to benefit the Museum of Discovery and Science. The celebration was a tribute to the community’s appreciation and support for the Museum. Kim Cavendish said, “I am so grateful for the leadership from the Co-Chairs and Honorary Co-Chairs, and for the outstanding support and sponsorships from our Board and others that have made this event such a big success and such an important source of support for MODS.” Trading on the success of last year’s MAD for MODS theme, the MAD for MODS Gala: the Sequel theme was chosen to reflect the popular television series, Mad Men, and the Gala celebrated the good times in South Florida, circa 1960. Guests ventured back to the chic styles of that time for an elegant evening of dining and dancing at the Museum of Discovery and Science. Chairman of the Board Jon Ferrando stated, “The Gala was a tremendous success and wonderful evening, but what impresses me the most is the generous support for the Museum shown by our community, led by the business community along with prominent foundations and individuals. We provide science and discovery experiences to over 450,000 visitors per year, and it’s very rewarding to see how much the community appreciates and supports a great resource.”

28 • ITB • December 2013

The festivities began at 6:00 p.m. with the Wells Fargo Cocktail Reception that included luscious hors d’oeuvres and an open bar generously provided by Southern Wine & Spirits, which was accompanied by a unique and impressive Silent Auction. After cocktails, WSVN’s Chief Meteorologist, Phil Ferro, welcomed more than 600 guests to an elegant wine pairing dinner held in a tent beautifully decorated to reflect the period with logos floating across the New York City skyline pulled by Pan Am jets. A brief live auction followed, allowing bidders to vie for prizes of ultimate luxury including a 2014 Mercedes-Benz E 350 Cabriolet L.C., a seven-night stay in a lifestyle suite at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, a long weekend on a 100’ private yacht, a Seabourn Cruise, a trip to the Galapagos, and an exclusive party at a waterfront estate. Exciting surprises included “PanAm” stewardesses interacting with guests, and a special performance by “Elvis,” which gave guests an unforgettable early “60s” experience. Finally, partygoers grooved at a rockin’ dance party that capped off the evening. The dinner and dancing portion of the gala was held in a tent set up in the Museum’s future Science Park. The approximately 30,000-square-foot Science Park facing Broward Boulevard will complete the Museum’s second and final phase of expansion that began with the EcoDiscovery Center opening in November of 2011. This new phase will also include some essential capital renovations to the current 20-year-old building as well as a digital upgrade of the AutoNa-

Robert Lochrie, Brooke Lochrie, and Senator George Lemieux

tion® IMAX Theater. All proceeds benefitted the Museum of Discovery and Science. Since 1977, the Museum of Discovery and Science has been a vital educational resource for the South Florida community. Through hands-on exhibits, engaging educational programs, films and a live animal collection, the Museum serves over 450,000 visitors each year and is the primary destination for school field trips in Broward County. The presenting sponsor was Mercedes-Benz Fort Lauderdale. Major sponsors included: Southern Wine & Spirits and Wells Fargo. ABOUT THE MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND SCIENCE The mission of the Museum of Discovery and Science is to provide experiential pathways to lifelong learning in science for children and adults through exhibits, programs and films. 2013 has proven to be a successful year for

Kelly Voice! BY staff reports

“W

ith over 20 years’ experience specializing in Artist & DJ Bookings & Management as well as Event Planning/Production, I love what I do”! Exclaimed Kelly Voice, Owner of the Kelly Voice Company.

Kelly has learned the value of hard work, loyalty and integrity from managing a fleet of DJ’s, MC’s and other artists to years of planning multi-million dollar private events and concerts. In the late 90s Kelly started working for a very large and successful nationwide event production company in South Florida, “Total Entertainment/Mthree.” It was there that

she learned sales and event production from the bottom up and began to manage entertainers, schedule them for events and be the problem solver. Kelly found that she really enjoyed what it took to make a party successful and spent years learning that customer service and delivering the “real deal” were key to longevity in this very competitive, male dominated industry. In 2012 Voice took a leap of faith and after 20 years of working the event circuit, decided to leave behind the social event world and focus on management and bookings for not only Top 40 artists but her own fleet of DJs and artists who are on her roster. “I really enjoy working with DJs, without them no party could ever rock. No club could ever be successful. They control the night, and it’s a powerful thing to stand in a DJ booth look out into a crowd and see people having the time of their life.” “I feel the same way about the artists I work with as well”. Each event, big or small that the artists/ DJ’s she works with becomes personal to her. “I want the artist/DJ to show up, rock the party and leave” explained Kelly. “There is no need for them to have any stress or worry, that’s my job”. And it shows! Kelly can be found hours before an event running around checking and double checking that everything is in place. “I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by artistic people my entire life. Each in their own way has molded me and has had some influence on me in a positive way.” Kelly stands on principle and honesty, which has earned her the respect and loyalty of the growing line of industry professionals she works with as well as her many clients.

Miami Heat Win Streak Proving They Are Still Motivated to Win More

By Allen Levin Sports Editor

A

fter a mildly sluggish start for the two-time defending NBA champs that included losses to lowly Philadelphia and Boston, the Miami Heat have been on an absolute tear. Since a humbling, last second defeat at the hands of the Celtics, the Heat have won 10 straight games (as of the writing of this article) and have erased any doubts that they aren’t up for a fourth consecutive Finals trip. As of the writing of this article, Miami stands at 14-3 and in second place in the Eastern Conference, right behind the red hot Indiana Pacers. Actually, all that separates the Heat from being a perfect 17-0 to start the year is a measly seven points. The Heat have suffered two one-point losses (Boston and Brooklyn) and a four-point loss to Philadelphia. Other than that, the Heat have

owned a 12.5 point differential during their win streak and have simply been dominating opponents. LeBron James obviously spearheads the win streak, posting four 30-point efforts, while averaging 26.2 points, 6.3 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game on the season (as of the writing of this article). LeBron’s two companions, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, have also been big contributors. However, it’s been the role players that have come up huge lately. Offseason free agent addition Michael Beasley has led the bench players with 10.1 points per game and the second highest Player Efficiency Rating at 21.2 (as of the writing of this piece). In addition, Ray Allen and Mario Chalmers have been posting solid campaigns to help make the Heat one of the best teams in the league yet again. The biggest positive from the win streak

has been how motivated the Heat have looked and resisting temptation to coast through the regular season. It’s early, but the Heat may be flirting with another large win streak. Last year, it reached 27 games. This year, the Heat have already hit double digits. Miami has a tough upcoming schedule, but when this team is motivated, they have proved that no one can really stop them.

Florida State, UCF Proving to be Florida’s Best College Football Teams

I

t has been an exciting year in college football for the state of Florida. Florida State is currently the No. 1 ranked team in the country at a perfect 12-0 and appear poised to play in the BCS National Championship.

42 • ITB • December 2013

Normally, it’s the University of Florida or the University of Miami that would also be in the mix as one of the best teams in the state as well as the nation. However, this year it’s been the UCF Knights from Orlando. The up and coming Knights are 10-1 (as of the writing of this article) and on a seven-game win streak. Their lone loss came against No. 8 South Carolina in a narrow three-point loss that saw the Knights cough up a 10-0 halftime lead. The University of Central Florida checked in at No. 16 in the BCS standings and just needs a win in their season finale against SMU to make their first-ever BCS bowl game in school history. Overall, the duo of FSU and UCF has provided for a very exciting year for the state. While the Seminoles have dominated the nation, winning by an average margin of 42.6

points per game and having their closest win by 14 points, the Knights have won a lot in nailbiting fashion. UCF has won six games that were decided by seven points or less, including four that have been determined by three points. They have used late game execution and timely offense and defense to edge out wins. Regardless, both teams have been very electrifying and very good this season. FSU will look to play for its third national championship, while the Knights will look to win their third bowl game ever. FSU can bring back some of the legacy and history that defined them in the 90s, while UCF can truly put its program on the map with its first ever BCS bowl game and victory. It has been an exciting year for Florida college football and the conclusion of this season will surely be just as exciting. www.InTheBizMagazine.com
