Forget about Bartenders Bash in Islamorada…
Bahia Cabana takes over to make End of Season Bash By Nicol Jenkins EDITOR
I
BIGGER and BETTER
n The Biz® employees won’t be traveling to Islamorada for Bartenders Bash this year, since the event is not taking place at Post Card Inn, previously Holiday Isle. But don’t worry! Bahia Cabana in Fort Lauderdale is taking the party over and making this year’s End of Season Bash the biggest event yet! Get excited-- and mark your calendars for June 2nd and June 3rd, 2014! It’s the 11th year of the popular ‘End of Season Bash’ at the world famous Bahia Cabana, a landmark hotel, restaurant and bar overlooking the water. The original End of Season Bash was started at Bahia Cabana and then made its way to the Keys. But now all the Alumni and hospitality workers are invited to come back to their roots and where it all started! For two days and nights, the ITB® crowd will party it up and network with their hospitality co-workers at the infamous In The Biz® End of Season Party held at Bahia Cabana in Fort Lauderdale. “This is the 11th year, Bahia Cabana is hosting the event. Every year is bigger and better; and especially this year since we are taking over for Bartenders Bash in the Keys; and inviting all hospitality employees and alumni to come out,” said Richard Stassen, Food & Beverage Director at Bahia Cabana. Each year, attendees come from South Florida 6 • ITB • March 2014 6 • ITB • March 2014
and travel from all over the world- including Las Vegas, New York, Atlanta and many more Citiesto celebrate the end of a long and hard working hospitality season. More attendees, sponsors and vendors, including main sponsor Malibu Rum, Stoli, Sailor Jerry, In The Biz Magazine®, Budweiser, Heineken, Corona, Florida rum, and Tres Rios Tequila, will be on hand. The event also offers more fun and contests, with the annual bikini contest, frozen t-shirt competitions, flair bartending and belly flop contests. There will be over 150 vendors providing free samples of the latest beer and liquor products, body painting and many unique giveaways from local businesses, and of course many prizes from In The Biz Magazine®.
The end of season bash was started 30 years ago by a group of local restaurant and bar owners. It was moved to Bahia Cabana 11 years ago to bring back the meaning of having a local party for the hospitality industry. Besides the fun, the bash also provides the perfect atmosphere for networking among hospitality workers. “It’s all about networking in a casual atmosphere and having a little fun for working so hard during the season. People come here and try the different products and get to relax,” said Stassen. Stassen says the end of season bash will continue for many years to come and looks forward to many years ahead.
Those working in the hospitality industry were also treated to a free buffet and discounted suites courtesy of Bahia Cabana. Overall, all the attendees will enjoy the many festivities and having a good time with friends and colleagues. “The event continues to grow each year. Every year the attendance increases by about 20 percent, and everyone enjoys the event,” said Stassen, adding, “It’s all people working In The Biz®; and it has expanded beyond the local businesses to the whole state of Florida and nearby states. Some people came from Orlando, Las Vegas and even from Atlanta.” www.InTheBizMagazine.com www.InTheBizMagazine.com

Cheetah Supports Rodriguez Charities with Golf Classic BY NICOL JENKINS eDITOR Many hospitality industry workers came together to support some great local charities at an annual golf tournament. The Rodriguez Charities 8th Annual Golf Classic, sponsored by Cheetah South Florida, was recently held at Woodmont Country Club in Tamarac. The charitable tournament benefited various charities including: Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Broward Children’s Center, American Cancer Society plus numerous local charities. The goal was to raise as much money as possible to give back to area communities-
and that mission has been exceeded year after year. “On top of earning a lot of money for some incredible charities, the hospitality community was able to enjoy an exciting day of fun out on the golf course on a beautiful South Florida day,” said Allyson Price, Promotional Director at Cheetah South Florida. The Rodriguez Charities was created because Joe Rodriguez and the Cheetah family have always made it a mission to give back to the community and to those who need help. To date, they have raised over $1,000,000 for national and local charities. Rodriguez Charities was created in 2006.
“Cheetah South Florida was the host for this wonderful event, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our generous sponsors who helped make this event a wonderful success,” said Price, adding, “Cheetah South Florida would like to personally thank all of our wonderful staff who volunteered their personal time in helping to pull off such a successful event. Without you this event would not have been possible. We appreciate your efforts.” Cheetah Gentlemen’s Clubs are located in Hallandale Beach, Pompano Beach and West Palm Beach. Cheetah Pompano Beach is located at 497 NW 31st Ave, Pompano Beach, FL 33069; call (954) 971-2600. Cheetah Hallandale is located at 100 Ansin Blvd., Hallandale Beach, FL 33009, call (954) 455-2131. the course of the war. If you want some more action, check out ‘Stalingrad’. The film is a drama set in 1942, during one of the most important battles of World War II, which stopped the progress of Nazi forces and turned the tide of war in favor of the Allies. The Soviet army mounts a counter-attack on the Nazi forces that occupy half of Stalingrad on the other side of the Volga, but the operation to cross the river is unsuccessful. While ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ tells of a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars and his friendship with a young employee who becomes his trusted protégé. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting, the battle for an enormous family fortune and the slow and then sudden upheavals that transformed Europe during the first half of the 20th Century. Another edge-of-your-seat thriller is ‘Non-Stop’. The film takes place on an international flight from New York to London. During the flight, U.S. federal air marshal Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) receives a series of threatening text messages, stating that a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes unless $150 million is transferred into a secret bank account. When the bank account is discovered to be under Marks’ name and a bomb is found aboard the plane, Marks is branded as a hijacker. If you are looking for a comedy and a girls’ night out, bring your friends to the movies for ‘The Single Moms Club. The film focuses on a group of single moms are brought together in the aftermath of an incident at their children’s school. What will be the conclusion to these films? Come watch for yourself! Whether you’re heading to a celebration, event or the movies, be sure to take some time off and enjoy your time with friends!

Chef Darrell started his culinary career growing up with a family in the hospitality industry and continued that path for many years. “Growing up my mother was a barmaid/ waitress and my father was the beverage manager of some of the largest hotels at the time, including the Omni and The Diplomat; my brother picked up some jobs at the local pizza joints in the area, so you can say I was always surrounded by the industry. Even during Boy Scouts, they put me in charge of cooking. It felt so good to see how happy everyone was with what I prepared. While cooking in the kitchen
with mom and grandma during the holidays, my ability to remember recipes was amazing so I would just get asked to make the dishes. At the age of 14, I took a summer job at the local family restaurant, and I’ve been living the dream ever since,” added Darrell. Chef Darrell says cooking is his passion and finds it rewarding to make his customers happy when they come in to dine. “Cooking, I would say brings me enjoyment everyday. Just the look on peoples faces of being full and happy and the thank you given for the food I have prepared for them The hospitality industry in general is enjoyable because of the different characters you get to work with. I believe the most rewarding thing in this business is the people you meet and the people you get to work with and the friendships that are made along the way,” concluded Darrell. Slackers offers delivery and plans on expanding their kitchen to be able to offer a variety of other enjoyable menu items in order to get the existing food out to you faster! Stop in today! Fany Avila
Bartender, Server and Manager at T-Mex Cantina By Nicol Jenkins Contributing Writer Just as much as the overflowing margaritas, 2 for 1 Taco Tuesdays and laid back atmosphere are a staple at T-Mex Cantina, so is the warm demeanor and impeccable customer service from long-time employee Fany Avila. For 15 years, the T-Mex Cantina staff led by Fany Avila have been delivering the best in Mexican cuisine in a fun and relaxed environment. The Mexican restaurant and bar just celebrated their 15th Anniversary at their downtown Fort Lauderdale location- and it’s no surprise that they have been so successful in business. T-Mex Cantina is the perfect spot to unwind after a hard day’s work with a cold beer, margarita and tasty enchilada or taco while people watching or dining with friends. And Fany Avila is the glue that keeps everything running smoothly each day. For 15 years, Fany has worn many hats from bartender to server and now Manager, making sure all her customers are enjoying their time and satisfied with their experience. “I’m just myself. I make sure my customers feel like they are at their own house. I listen to them when they want to talk, and I leave them alone when they don’t want to talk,” said Fany. Besides being able to read her customers’ body language, Fany also knows what makes her customers happy. Many regulars come in just to say hi and grab a drink with Fany, whom they have come to know as more than just a bartender but a good friend. “As soon as my regulars walk in, I already have their drink ready for them,” she said.
Sometimes, she even has a nickname for them… (Many of her regulars are known soley by a nickname she’s created for them!) That’s why she started in the hospitality industry and why she’s remained in the business. She’s a ‘people person’. Her love for hospitality actually began while working in her mother’s restaurant and then her stepfather’s grocery store, chopping tomatoes and then never looking back. “I’ve worked a nine to five job in an office but I left because I need to be around people,” said Fany. The same can be said about how her customers feel about her. “After a long day’s work, when I come to TMex and see Fany, she always make me smile and feel at home,” said regular Jeff Jenkins. “She makes me feel like family, no matter how long it’s been since I’ve seen her. She makes me laugh and I always have a great time when she’s behind the bar,” added longtime customer Jen Hull. Her regulars, T-Mex family and owner, Chuck, will keep her at T-Mex for many years to come. “I work there because of Chuck, the owner. He is the nicest person I have ever met. He is my family, and I would do anything for him,” said Fany. Come visit Fany and see for yourself! T-Mex Cantina is located at 204 SW 2 Street, in downtown Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954-463-2003. You can also visit http://t-mex.net.

the atlas complex
BY Luke Rohenaz Contributing Writer
The Atlas Complex is a four piece band emerging from the South Florida Rock scene. Formed by Phillip Bower, Rafael Ramirez, Isaac Emano and Chrystian Von Schoettler in 2012; The Atlas Complex have forged a unique style and sound which has been described as “beautifully heavy with a dose of groove, intense but progressive”. Tying them down to one genre proves to be a challenge after witnessing them live and we strongly advise you do.. The Atlas Complex was a work-in-progress for guitarist Philip Bower until he ran into his friend from middle school Rafael Ramirez. After jamming for the first time since the days of concert band, it was plain and simple that the material they were cranking out was taking form.. almost breathing. Isaac Emano, a friend and co-worker of Phill’s joined the same time as Chrystian Von Schoettler. It was after the first rehearsal where the chemistry of the band had become apparent.

They each had vastly different influences but met in the middle to produce music not to be ignored. ..what about the name? Urban Dictionary has a term for it, “Atlas Complex,” which is defined as “a state of mind in which a person believes that the ‘world is on their shoulders’ and are unable to deal with what they perceive as endless problems.” In Greek mythology, Atlas was the guy that Zeus, the father of the gods, doomed to an eternity of holding the weight of the world on his shoulders. “There’s something cathartic about music and what it does for people”, said drummer Rafael Ramirez. “...we all, at one point or an other have had a case of the Atlas Complex, but the function our music has is to remedy the listener of that nonsense.” In 2012, after playing a host of local venues (Unity88, Cinema Paradiso, SuperCon Miami, Monterey Club, I.W.A.N. the BuBBLE..) and re-
cording a live demo titled “...Moon Within”, The Atlas Complex recorded a studio release in 2013 titled “Attack EP”, which is available on iTunes. The band is currently in the studio working on their follow-up release due out in the Fall of 2014. *The next show for the Atlas Complex will be Thursday night, March 20th at Stache Bar Fort Lauderdale, Florida (109 SW 2nd Ave, 33312) The Atlas Complex is... Florida Gators Look Poised for Deep Run in March Madness
By Allen Levin
Sports Editor
I
t has been quite some time since the Florida Gators basketball team has been truly dominant. After winning back-toback titles in 2006-2007, the Gators have been competitive but have failed to return to the Final Four. That might chance this year. Since a one-point loss to then No. 12 UConn in early December, the Florida Gators have strung together a 21-game winning streak and are the No. 1 team in the country as of the writing of this article. Florida has absolutely dominated its competition, knocking off ranked opponents such as Kansas, Memphis and Kentucky. They sit at a perfect 16-0 in the SEC and are 27-2 overall, sporting the second best record in the nation (as of the writing of this article).
The Gators have been successful through a dominant defense, which ranks in the top 5 in the nation. They limit opponents to just 58.7 points per game while also limiting team’s to just 42.9 percent from the field, both in the top 10 of the country as of the writing of this article. On top of that, they are led by two extremely productive upperclassmen in forward Casey Prather and guard Scottie Wilbekin, who lead the team in scoring. The Gators benefit from having tons of senior leadership, who have all played relatively deep into the tournament over the past few seasons. Florida has reached the Elite Eight in each of the past two seasons, and will utilize the veteran presence of its top players, who know what it takes to get deep into the tourney. The Gators are one of the most well-rounded teams in the country and have an opportu-
nity to doing something special this year. If Florida can continue to play suffocating defense, improve its shooting and stay focused through their senior leaders, they are poised to make a run in the March Madness tournament.
Miami Marlins Getting Ready to Return, Rely on Youth
A
performance after impressive performance.
fter a long offseason, Major League Baseball is back as Spring Training has started and Opening Day quickly approaches.
The young gun even was named to the NL All Stars in his rookie year, and he will anchor the Marlins staff next season.
The Miami Marlins endured a rough season in 2013, producing a 62-100 record and the worst record in the National League.
Along with Stanton, center fielder Justin Ruggiano, Hechavarria and newly signed Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be depended on for offense this season. The Fish were one of the worst offense teams in the league last year, and will be a focus of second year manager Mike Redmond this season.
The team went through a youth movement after dismantling a promising roster that included stars like Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson. Now, they rely on young studs Giancarlo Stanton, Adeiny Hechavarria and Jose Fernandez to lead the franchise as they try to improve in 2014.
Fernandez ended up being a prodigy for the Marlins, being named the Rookie of the Year after going 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA and 187 strikeouts.
Stanton and Fernandez are clearly the team’s stars after productive seasons last year. Stanton posted 24 home runs and 62 RBIs to lead the team in the hitting department.
In a year that included a lot of losing, Fernandez was the primary bright spot for the Fish. He reignited the ball club and made national headlines after turning in impressive
The Marlins will likely go through growing pains again this year as their young players continue to progress, but they have a solid core of talent to build upon, which bodes them well heading into the future.
