The Biz® Magazine. Those working in the hospitality industry are treated to discounted suites courtesy of Bahia Cabana. “The event continues to grow each year, and everyone enjoys the event,” said Richard Stassen, Director of Food and Beverage for Bahia Cabana, adding, “It’s all people working In The Biz®; and it has expanded beyond the local businesses to the whole state of Florida and nearby states.” The end of season bash was started over 30 years ago by a group of local restaurant and bar owners and originally held in Islamorada. While there is still a hospitality event in Islamorada, the Fort Lauderdale businesses wanted to host a local party here as well. Besides the fun, the bash also provides the perfect atmosphere for networking among hospitality workers. “It’s all about networking in a causal atmosphere and having a little fun after working so hard during the season. People come here and try the different products and relax,” said Stassen. In The Biz® Magazine invites everyone in the industry to come out to this year’s bash and says the end of season bash will continue for many years to come. Also join us on Monday, June 10th for the annual Bahia Cabana Golf Classic at Inverrary Golf Course. Bahia Cabana is located at 3001 Harbor Dr, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316. To reserve your room for this event, please call (954) 524-1555; you must mention that you are booking for the End of Season Bash as the resort is closed to the public for these 3 days. www.InTheBizMagazine.com

Miami Heat Advance to East Semi-Finals; Ready for Deep Run By Allen Levin Sports Editor
F
InTheBiz® at Capones
or the third consecutive year, the Miami Heat have breezed past the first round of the playoffs and advanced into the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. However, they are just getting started as they look to repeat as NBA Champions. After blanking the eighth-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the team’s opening round series, 4-0, the Heat notched their first sweep in the Big Three era and await the winner of BrooklynChicago for their second round opponent as of the writing of this article. Miami didn’t even play its best ball against Milwaukee, but still managed to have doubledigit wins in all four contests. Superstar Dwyane Wade was hobbled by a bone bruise on his knee, and missed Game 4, but the Heat’s depth allowed them to cruise past the inferior Bucks.
38 • ITB • May38 2013 • ITB • May 2013
Now, the Heat begin to get into real competition, with either the Nets or Bulls (the Bulls hold a 3-2 lead as of the writing of this article) posing much more competition than the Bucks. Still, the Heat seem to be in unstoppable mode, with an unwavering goal of winning a second consecutive title. As of the writing of this article, the Heat have 41 of their past 43 games since February 3. They have also won 12 in a row dating back to the regular season. It’s the team’s depth, maturity and championship habits that have made them such a formidable contender. However, its Miami’s poise and chemistry that have made them lethal as of late. LeBron James continues to have his out-ofthis-world season, while Wade and Chris Bosh are having the most efficient seasons of their respective careers. Meanwhile, the Heat’s role players, such as Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Chris Andersen and Norris Cole continue to step it up
and provide that additional firepower past the Big Three. As long as the Heat remain healthy, they appear to be on cruise control to reaching their third consecutive NBA Finals. And if they continue to play as well as they have recently, there is likely going to be another championship trophy hoisted in Miami.

n extremely successful free agency period that saw the signings of star receiver Mike Wallace, linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Phillip Wheeler, gave the Miami Dolphins something to look forward to in 2013. Then, the Dolphins draft class gave an already bolstered roster an even bigger boost and increased excitement heading into the

new season. Miami followed its free agent additions with arguably one of its most productive drafts in recent memory. The Dolphins traded up in the first round to get the third overall pick in the draft, selecting defensive end Dion Jordan from Oregon. The Dolphins will use Jordan as a pass rusher opposite of Pro Bowler Cameron Wake in hopes of having one of the best sacking tandems in the NFL. In the second round, Miami drafted cornerback Jamar Taylor from Boise State to fill the void left by Sean Smith departing in free agency. Taylor was regarded as one of the best corners in the draft and has the possibility of making an immediate impact on the team. The Dolphins shored up other needs in third round, taking Tennessee tackle Dallas Thomas with the 15th pick and Utah State cornerback Will Davis with the 31st pick. The Fins were in need of a tackle after losing
former first overall pick Jake Long in the offseason to the St. Louis Rams. The fourth round saw the Dolphins select outside linebacker Jelani Jenkins from the University of Florida and tightend Dion Sims from Michigan State. Miami rounded the draft off with two more Gators in the fifth round, running back Mike Gillislee and kicker Caleb Sturgis. Finally, they picked up safety Don Jones from Arkansas State in the seventh round. Overall, the Dolphins addressed many of their needs through the draft and got a lot quicker, faster and stronger. They are much deeper and improved team after a busy offseason of free agent signings and draft picks. With a vastly improved offense from free agency and an enhanced defense from their draft picks, the Dolphins seem poised for an exciting 2013 campaign that might include their first trip to the playoffs since 2008. Either way, Dol-Fans have plenty to be excited about. May 2013 • ITB • 39

J Jock D
InTheBiz® @ Red Dog Cantina
J Jock D (Chris Walton, born in Cincinnati Ohio, raised in New York City) is a West Palm Beach, Florida based Miami Bass/Hip-Hop rapper, producer, and scratch DJ, who earned fame as one of the chief creative forces behind Cut It Up Def Records in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. After winning a DJ contest at a local club called Fun House, which was run by Frank Garcia, Jock was approached by a local rapper named Jonski who was angered as he expected his DJ, Jealous J, to win. After the two men talked it over, Jock went from being an enemy of this camp to a being a new recruit. Jonski, Jealous J, rapper Aaron G, and another producer/ rapper named Gemini had just begun work as the creative staff for a new record label named Cut it Up Def Records run out of Bob “Scorpio” Smith’s TV Satellite company. With Jealous and Jock, Scorpio realized he had two exceptionally talented producers and DJ’s on his hands, so he capitalized by having them produce a DJ battle track in 1989 entitled DJ Wars. Shortly after, Jealous J left the label to sign with Heatwave Records, making Jock D the lone producer for Cut it Up Def (assisting Jealous at Heatwave on occasions such as the Digital DJ’s compilation). Following the release of the Cut it Up Def Bass Jams compilation in 1991, the relationship between Cut it Up Def and Pandisc soured, creating tension between all involved.

This tension resulted in Jock signing briefly with Pandisc directly. 1993 was the year that things seemed bleak for the old guard of Miami Bass as the “booty” element had become dominant. Jock felt it was time to redeem himself by producing music he thought of as “higher quality”, shifting his focus to a more New York based Hip-Hop sound. This resulted in his move to NYC in 1994 with The Whiz Kids and their group Rotten Apples. Clinging to early 1990’s style HipHop seemed to be a dated concept as Crunk and new school R&B dominated the Hip-Hop community, so Jock re-evaluated. Jealous J (now Jim Jonsin) and Kooley C re-invented themselves as larger than life producers of these genres, producing everything from Pretty Rickey to Pitbull and Jamie Foxx. Jock D did not want to follow this path.
He never fully addressed the growing legacy of Cut it Up Def, Cha-os, and Miami Bass overall globally with younger generations. Making himself available to fans online, he discovered many consider him a legend at this point, often cited as one of the top five Miami Bass producers to date. As for now Jock D has relaunched Cut It Up Def Records and with the help from Dream House Studios and partner Alex Weir, they have rewritten Hip Hop history with a new documentary film project, “The Bass that Ate Miami.” The story of how today’s Pop music roots first started in Miami by the Ghetto DJ’s as Bass Music and Hip Hop took over mainstream culture. While 2 Live Crew rose to worldwide fame under the guidance of Luther Campbell, Miami Bass hit Atlanta and became the “Dirty South”
then died leaving hundreds of rap artists, scratch DJ’s and producers in its shadow. Against the backdrop of Florida’s drug lands, “The Bass that Ate Miami” Rap Music project is the first documentary film to bring the legends of True Bass to the big screen. See where pop culture’s true roots began in Miami with Bass music the genre that still moves music industry. Look out for the re-mastering and re-release of “Cut It Up Def Miami Bass Jams” album, available on ITunes, CD, and double vinyl LP. The Return Of Ghetto Bass” by Jock-D, new song coming soon (Miami bass) and Jocks alter ego King Jocamoe has 2 new songs ready for release this summer “The Baddest” feat.
