Fort Lauderdale Bus Loop boosts hospitality business BY NICOL JENKINS EDITOR

H

undreds of locals hopped on trolleys and looped from bar to bar to give back to some great charities and, in turn, boost the local hospitality industry. The Fort Lauderdale “Game Day” Bus Loop, which was held on January 17th, drew a large crowd to the many stops where attendees received a complimentary drink and then hopped on a trolley or bus to the next location. The beach side venues included Bokamper’s, Soprano’s, Bamboo Beach Club & Tiki Bar, Tokyo Blue, Sandbar, McSorley’s, The Parrot, as well as a few other spots.

“The Fort Lauderdale Bus Loop has been a huge success for the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation since 2007. The funds raised and community exposure have contributed to our growth and our mission to provide emergency financial assistance for children fighting cancer in our community,” said Sandra Muvdi, President and Founder of the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation.

The film, I, Frankenstein, is set in a dystopic present where vigilant gargoyles and ferocious demons rage in a battle for ultimate power. Victor Frankenstein’s creation Adam (Aaron Eckhart) finds himself caught in the middle as both sides race to discover the secret to his immortality. “Labor Day” centers on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler, who struggles to be the man of his house and care for his reclusive mother Adele, while confronting all the pangs of adolescence. On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers, a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict. The events of this long Labor Day weekend will shape them for the rest of their lives. In ‘That Awkward Moment’, three best friends find themselves where we’ve all been - at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you have to decide: “So...where is this going?” And in another comedy, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube lead the lineup in the film, Ride Along, from the director and the producer of the blockbuster comedy, Think Like a Man. When a fast-talking guy joins his girlfriend’s brother— a hot-tempered cop— to patrol the streets of Atlanta, he gets entangled in the officer’s latest case. Now, in order to prove that he deserves his future bride, he must survive the most insane 24 hours of his life.

Theresa Loughrey Where do you work? I work at Lauderdale Grill. Where the locals go! Great food, great live music and even better company. Where are you from originally? I was born in New Jersey, but raised on the west coast of Florida in a town called Englewood. How long have you been InTheBiz®? I started bartending 6 yrs ago after I got out of the Air Force, but I started bussing tables at 14. What do you like best about bartending? Minimal hours Maximum money!!! Haha. Watching the progression of beer goggles is always fun too. Why did you become a bartender? My mom is the best bartender I know! She’s been doing it my whole life. So I guess I wanted to be like my mom when I grew up. Plus it’s a blast! What is the most ordered drink? I serve mostly beer and rum and coke. What is your favorite drink to make? I wouldn’t say I have a favorite drink to make, but I do enjoy shaking up fancy Martinis. What can you share with other bartenders just starting out? Well first off, bartending is not for everybody. If you can’t come into work with a smile, find another profession. Be personable, remember names. Most importantly learn how to MULTITASK! what is the worst pick up line you ever heard? Hey girl, are you wearing space pants? Cause your ass is outta this world. So lame. Haha. What is the best part of working at Lauderdale Grill? I love working for a family owned business. Being a locals bar definitely has its perks. Plus I get work outside and jam to live music 4 nights a week. Kristin Gargano Bartender at LuLu’s Bait Shack BY NICOL JENKINS CONTRIBUTING WRITER At Lulu’s Bait Shack, it always feels like Mardi Gras- but bartender Kristin Gargano also makes sure that her customers always feel right at home. Being in the hospitality industry for over 14 years and bartending at Lulu’s Bait Shack for a little over a year, Kristin knows the tricks of keeping her regulars and new customers happy with the service. Her Number 1 trick of the trade is “building relationships” and “becoming friends” with each person that walks into Lulu’s. “I want to make sure they have a good time while at Lulu’s and that they have fun. We get a lot of locals and visitors coming into our bar and restaurant,” said Kristin, adding, “I ensure that they feel at ease and comfortable while dining or drinking with us. I get to know many of my clients and find out more about them.”

music nightly also draws many guests to this bar. #NUGGLIFE

BY LUKE ROHENAZ CONTRIBUTING WRITER The Funky Nuggets were formed in early 2010, stemming out of Palm Beach, FL. Originally, a three piece band, they tore into the South Florida jam band scene with great haste. This is a band that not only has traditional lyrical rock/funk songs but dance party instrumentals as well. With the help of their very loyal and daily growing fan-base, they have gained much respect and recognition in the Florida music scene in a short amount of time. T.F.N have acted as direct support for Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and guitarist for the legendary rock band The Doors, Robby Krieger as well as Grammy Award Winning artist Cyril Neville, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, The Heavy Pets, and Consider the Source, just to name a few. The Nuggets have also played all over their home state of Florida at such Venues as the famous Suwanee Music Park (Suwanee County), Tobacco Road (Miami), Jimbo’s Place (Miami), The Stage (Miami), The Culture Room (Ft. Lauderdale), Hooligans (Boca Raton), The Green Room (Ft. Lauderdale), Dunedin Brewery (Dunedin), Guanabanas (Jupiter), Debauchery (Melbourne), 1904 (Jacksonville) The Jam (Gainesville) and The Funky Biscuit (Boca Raton) among many more. In 2011 they were the featured headline acts at the Splash Naked Music Festival, FYN Winter Gathering Festival, and EarthDance Lake Worth Festival. They continued to consecutively headline all of those festivals up to and throughout 2013. In December of 2011 they won a national poll contest for a spot on Aura Music Festival 2012, beating out bands from all over the country. In 2012 they

www.InTheBizMagazine.com

were featured acts at the Orange Blossom Jamboree Festival, Earthdance, as well as the headlining act at the B.E Easy Music Festival. April of 2013 they headed out for their first two week Colorado tour that was completely booked and headed solely by T.F.N. T.F.N has a unique sound some would refer to as Funk-Fusion or Psychedelic Dance. However, they prefer to simply say ‘’Jam band’’ and are VERY improvisational in their live shows. Feeding off the energy of the crowd and falling into extended improvisational jams, they never play a song exactly the same. Thus keeping every T.F.N experience unique and very “in the moment.” They’ve shown to be gaining great momentum in the Florida music scene and with no signs of slowing down. The future looks to be very bright for The Funky Nuggets .

The Band: Frankie Sensimilla (Guitar/Vocals) Nico Swarley (Bass/Vocals) Chris Lopez (Drums) Ryan Kearns (Saxophone) Nik Dee (Keyboards/Vocals) Interested in booking The Funky Nuggets? Miami Heat Limping, But Staying Strong Heading into All-Star Break BY ALLEN LEVIN

SPORTS EDITOR

I

t’s been an up and down season for the two-time defending champion Miami Heat. They’ve been ravaged my injuries to core players, suffer from lack of motivation at times and consistently get hit with their opponent’s best shot each game. And through it all, the Heat currently hold the second seed in the East with a 32-13 record, which is the 5th best record in the NBA (as of the writing of this article.) Despite the decent record, the Heat have limped their way to the All-Star Break upcoming in February. Miami has had key players miss time, including Dwyane Wade, Chris Andersen, Shane Battier and Mario Chalmers. They have been lackadaisical on defense and seem to be going

through the motions during certain games. The Heat appear to be mentally fatigued from three straight seasons of advancing to the NBA Finals and have stretches where they just don’t give it their all. In January, the reigning champs endured their worst month of the season, going 8-6 and falling three games behind the Indiana Pacers for the top spot in the East. Even with the uneven play, Miami still ranks in the top 10 in offense (8th in points per game) and defense (10th in points allowed) as of the writing of this article, and are the best shooting team in the NBA. Sure, the Heat have had their struggles this season, but there’s no reason to worry in February, when they are still three months away from the playoffs. There are a lot of teams that want to knock the Heat off their throne, but it will take more than a few regular season issues to beat the

Heat when it really matters. Come playoff time, the Heat will mold into championship form and look to become just the fourth team in NBA history to three-peat. Until then, they will just need to work out the kinks.

Florida State’s National Championship Win Huge for State of Florida

T

he Florida State Seminoles are back on top of the college football mountain. A season in which they dominated their opponents and made history culminated in a 34-31 victory over Auburn to win the BCS National Championship and preserve a perfect 14-0 season.

www.InTheBizMagazine.com

The Jameis Winston led Seminoles took the nation by storm, winning by an average margin of 42.7 points per game excluding their narrow win over Auburn. They had an excellent combination of suffocating defense and highpowered offense. They finished second in the nation in scoring, posting 53.7 points per game, while shutting opponents down, limiting them to 11 points per game in the regular season. Winston won the Heisman Trophy as a true freshman after a stellar season, throwing for 4,057 yards and 40 touchdowns. Overall, it was a spectacular year for the Noles, who won the title for the first time since 1999. Almost equally as important is the fact that FSU put college football in Florida back on the map.

There has been a rough patch in the Sunshine State as of late as teams like LSU, Auburn and Alabama dominated the scene. The last time a Florida team was relevant was the Gators back in 2008 when they claimed the championship. Since then, it’s been a mediocre stretch for the powerhouses of Florida. Now, FSU helped returned prominence to the state, which will consequently give a big boost to the recruiting in the fertile football grounds of Florida. Next year, the Seminoles are predicted to be preseason No. 1, while UCF, UF and Miami will all field competitive teams and have a chance to advance to a major bowl game. What Florida State did this year is unrivaled and it will go down as one of the finest campaigns in college football history. And thanks to the Seminoles, Florida college football is back on the map.
