But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes— a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Bethany Day
Bartender at Hunter’s Beach Bar By Starlet Anne Contributing Writer
B
ethany Day has a contagious smile and larger than life personality that keeps customers coming back week after week to Hunter’s Beach Bar in Fort Lauderdale. Working in the hospitality industry for over 10 years, Bethany knows how to make each of her customers happy and make them forget about their worries and enjoy their time at the local bar. She always has a good personality, a happy demeanor and is attentive to all her guests. “When I turned 18, I started working at Hooters in Houston TX, and it was all over with from there. I’ve managed bars, go-go danced, and have bartended at many bars. You never know what to expect. It’s a different experience every shift,” said Bethany. Some of the Tricks of the Trade that she uses daily are making people feel welcome at Hunter’s Beach Bar and becoming friends with her regulars, where she has worked for over a year. “Other tricks of the trade that I use are my impulsiveness- you never know what crazy thing I’ll do next. I also try to make every customer feel like they are the only
one in here even when it’s packed. And of course, my smile!” said Bethany. Besides Bethany’s charming personality, people are also drawn to the fun and laid-back atmosphere at Hunter’s. “People love coming to Hunter’s Beach Bar because of the live bands and cheap drinks. Also, it’s the MILF HUNTERS BAR.... put two and two together,” said Bethany. The local bartender likes coming to work every day because she never knows what to expect! “It’s great to hang out with the locals and to see their daily shenanigans. It’s also fun watching the crazy people get on our stripper pole. Oh and A/C finally after being on the beach is great,” added Bethany. “Hunter’s is just like Cheers. You wanna go where everybody knows your name. There are beer specials all day everyday; and Jaime, our grill boss, cooks up the best BBQ on the beach. And like I said before, the live bands,” concluded Bethany. Hunter’s Beach Bar is located at 235 Almond Ave. Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954-4679166.

Chef of the Month Miguel Morales Head Chef at
Cheetahs Gentleman’s Club By Starlet Anne Contributing Writer
M
iguel Morales is a natural in the kitchen. So it came as no surprise to his colleagues and customers when he took home second place at the CBI (Cheney Brothers) Chef Showcase at the Broward County Convention Center. Competing against top chefs in the industry, Miguel wowed the judges and beat out many other culinary meals with his unique version of Cevíche. “It was an honor to be there. I was competing against well known chefs and big names, to win second place is amazing. Next year, I am going for first place,” said Miguel. “I was very proud to be a part of this competition.” Miguel, who is the Head Chef at Cheetahs Gentleman’s Club in Pompano Beach, was raised in Santiago, Chile where his grandmother and father first introduced him to cooking. Their passion for fresh flavorful food was passed onto him. Miguel realized at an early age that he had a certain flair for creating new dishes for his friends and family. At the age of 22, Miguel ventured to South Florida and was introduced into the professional culinary world by his uncle. He loved working in the professional atmosphere and decided this was his true calling. Over the years, he has worked for various restaurants, until in 2009 he found his culinary freedom at Cheetah Gentlemen’s Club. With the room to experiment, Miguel has broadened his culinary expertise, and his customers rave 32 • ITB • July 2013
about his menu items. “Cheetahs has given me the flexibility to create and make new things. Every week we have a different lunch special, and it’s a good challenge being able to make something new,” said Miguel. Cheetahs offers an extensive lunch and dinner menu with a variety of menu items to choose from. Some of their biggest sellers are Miguel’s homemade soups, his juicy New York Strip steak, and chicken Penne ala Vodka. Burgers, salads and chicken sandwiches are also favorites on their menu.
“Our food is good and it’s different. People don’t want to eat the same thing all the time. I like working at Cheetahs. I get along well with the staff and customers,” said Miguel, adding, “I wanted to make my family proud of my culinary skills. It is just one of the things that comes natural to me.” Cheetahs Gentleman’s Club Pompano Beach is located at 497 NW 31 Avenue, Pompano Beach. Miami Heat Overcome Adversity to Win Back-to-Back Titles By Allen Levin Sports Editor
A
ll the criticism, scrutiny and adversity the Miami Heat have faced over the past three years came to a head as the franchise won its third championship. The Big Three experiment of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh was completely validated, no longer to be questioned, as the Heat finished off the San Antonio Spurs in seven games to win back-to-back trophies. After a collapse in the 2011 Finals, the Heat have responded to prove their blueprint works by reaching the NBA Finals three consecutive years, and winning two rings. They become just the sixth team in league history to win back-to-back titles and are the first team to do it since the Los Angeles Lakers did it in 2009 and 2010. This year’s championship had a much different feel and theme than last year’s title. Last year, it was about getting the monkey off their back and getting LeBron his first ring. This year, it was about beginning to create their legacy. And that is exactly what Miami did. The Heat won a franchise record 66 games, went on an exciting 27-game winning streak (second best of all time) and finished with the
NBA’s best record. Then, the Heat were able to overcome deficits in the second round vs. the Bulls and a 3-2 deficit against the Spurs in the Finals. They were victorious in two Game 7’s against the Pacers and the Spurs. All in all, they took on adversity and dominated it. Their adversity was culminated in Game 6 of the Finals, when they trailed by five point with 28 seconds to go. Seemingly finished, LeBron was able to hit a clutch three and Ray Allen
was able to hit one of the most iconic shots in Finals history, nailing a game-tying three pointer with five seconds left to send the game into overtime. Miami went on to win Game 6 in overtime, and won Game 7 to win it all with some great last-minute play. Now, they are back-to-back champions and will look to three-peat next season. As long as they have their Big Three intact, they will have a great shot to achieve that.
Miami Dolphins Look Promising Heading into 2013-14 Season
T
he Miami Dolphins 2013 offseason was one for the books. The team completely revamped its offense and defense, signing multiple big-name free agents, highlighted by wide receiver Mike Wallace and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, while drafting defensive end Dion Jordan with the third overall pick in the draft. On top of all that, the Dolphins unveiled a new logo, new jerseys and a new brand. As training camp approaches, it seems like the Dolphins have a fluid team that is ready to compete in the AFC East.

After weeks of OTA’s, there are early reports that quarterback Ryan Tannehill looks vastly improved, the offense is clicking nicely and the defense looks stout. Tannehill will have plenty of new weapons to throw to this year, including Wallace, Brandon Gibson, Brian Hartline and Dustin Keller. Gibson and Hartline are coming off career years, and Wallace is a pro bowl threat every year. The defense will be led by the likes of Ellerbe, Phillip Wheeler, Cameron Wake, Randy Starks and Brent Grimes. The team already had
a strong defense, but the new additions will make the team’s defense stronger, faster and more athletic. With the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets appearing to be in rebuilding stages, that leaves the Patriots as the main division competition. But, the Patriots are facing questions on offense and appear to be losing their stranglehold on the division. With the huge improvements on both side of the ball, exciting new rookies and a recharged team, the Dolphins have an excellent shot to make the postseason this year. July 2013 • ITB • 43
