They traditionally look like the large black & white example opposite - that one is a QR code for Google (try it!). Our front cover is adorned with a rather more ornate affair - it works just as well - and will take you to a special message on our whatsoninverness website. QR codes - what’s all that about then?

It’s a good question - with a good answer! QR codes are simply a small, square type of barcode that you can scan with yout mobile phone* camera that will link you directly to a web page. The reason this is so handy is its total immediacy. No typing long web address - often very fiddly on mobiles - just scan it** and you’re there - it’s that simple, it’s that immediate.

So why are we interested?

Well - it means we can provide all sorts of things we couldn’t before - for instance - in some of the features you’ll read in this issue, you be able to scan a qr code and buy yourself a ticket right there and then. No having to remember to do it later - do it immediately and you won’t forget it. Great. Also - in some cases we may have more information we’d like to share with you - and it means you can access it wherever you are (as long as you’ve 3G signal), whatever time of day, whether you’re at a computer or not.

Does it cost anything?

No! Nearly all the apps are free - and there is no charge for using them (aside from your usual 3G tariff).

OK - you need a mobile phone - almost (but not quite) all mobiles can now use an app to scan these clever little codes. All Blackberry devices have a reader built-in. There are many apps for iPhones (see below). All new Nokia phones will come preloaded with a reader. EVENT#1 @ the IG:LU, Church St Fri 10–Fri 17 Dec Strange goings on are afoot on Church Street, Inverness - not for the first time, we’d be the first to agree. What with Hootananny providing an eclectic mix of live music on an almost daily basis, it having the city’s greatest concentration of independent coffee shops and its finest independent bookstore, a comic store, plus two longstanding music shops, the coolest access to the quirky Victorian Market via the Market Bar/Gorgeous gauntlet, the only place in town we’ve seen close-on flourescent highland dress for sale & hire(!), plus some intruiging eateries offering up conversation and quality art alongside their edible wares… It’s been traffic-controlled, streetscaped, and hijacked as a whole on more than one occasion for arts events. Strange indeed. And its about to get stranger yet. A new space becomes appears unseen from nowhere - morphing out of the side of McEwans of Perth up near Rendezvous Café and the new Jamaican diner, comes the IG:LU. Already home to web company slashdotdashdotcom, buyinverness, whatsoninverness, befrienders highland and, ahem, ourselves also... and from Fri 10 to Fri 17 Dec, you’ll be able to ascend 3 floors into a hidden space that will be populated by the weird and the wonderful. It’s art mate, but not as we know it. Paintings, drawings, jewellery, video art, short films, slideshows, light-art, music

and more. All from local artists you’re not likely to find in any of the local galleries. Artists that fall outside of the mainstream. The local underground. Decades exhibition currently at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery. Workshops using words, visual art and film animation led by GRAEME ROGER, DUNCAN MARSHALL and BRIAN MACBEATH, involving secondary school pupils from Inverness, Alness, Invergordon, Fortrose and Kilchuimen have been taking place this month to create the new work which will also be on show in the Small Gallery at Inverness Museum from 15th Jan – 12th Feb. The ‘zine’ will contain reviews, text-based images and questions and answers between the young people and the great ED RUSCHA himself. Ed Ruscha is possibly America’s greatest living artist – watch this space!

PLANT MEMORY to 8 Jan Victoria Crowe’s long term interest in the study and drawing of flowers and plants naturally lead to an exchange between the artist and the scientist David Ingram, Master of St Catherine’s College in Cambridge and formerly Regius Keeper at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh on the wider aspects of knowledge of plants and nature. The exhibition is based on the artist’s study of the wonderful old archives, herbals and historic collections of plants in Cambridge and Venice. The delicate beauty and detailed analysis of the plant forms illustrate the natural link between science and art. MAPPING OUR LAND December Works by pupils from six Highland secondary schools. The art works were created using a combination of traditional screen printing and digital imaging

13th Christmas Exhibition to 23 Dec Kilmorack Gallery brings warmth to the winter again with its 13th Christmas exhibition. Highlights include the welcome return of Helen Denerley’s sculpture to the gallery. It’s been a busy year of English shows for this successful scrap-metal sculptor so it is good to see her latest creations in the north again. Further highlights include a series of new horse paintings by Kirstie Cohen who is more often associated with her richly worked landscape paintings. James Adams’ paintings are a welcome addition to Kilmorack too; with their naïve, almost dreamlike evocation of the highlands.

This writer recalls an eager young DJ hosting a club night in a tiny basement on London s Oxford Street back in the heady Britpop days. Mixing Oasis, Blur, Pulp et al with more obscure, but invariably marvellous tracks, the club attracted scenesters, bands and people who just wanted to hear something a bit different. That DJ was Erol Alkan and it marked the start of quite an ascendency.His studious interests across the sonic spectrum made it inevitable that at some point he would cross the boards and start to create music as well as play it, and in 2001 he took his first steps under the nom-de-guerre Kurtis Rush. His alchemical fusion of George Michael and Missy Elliot resulted in 24 carat party gold, and Bastard Pop was born, with Erol as one of its founding figureheads alongside Soulwax and Richard X, reaching its apex with Kylie performing Erol s infamous Can t Get You Out Of My Head fusion with New Order s Blue Monday live at the 2002 Brit Awards. It wasn t long before Erol was lending his magic touch to increasingly higher profile releases, with his remixes of Alter Egos Rocker and Mylo s Drop The Pressure proving unavoidable on the dancefloors of 2004. Remixes for Bloc Party, and The Chemical Brothers ensued, followed by Erol s first truly legendary contribution to dance music s canon: The Glam Racket Rework of Franz Ferdinand s Do You Want To , which impressed the band so much that they incorporated elements of the remix into their live tour. And in truth, that s only the half of it. For more than two years, on the odd nights of the year that he s not duty bound to be Erol Alkan, he has been known to don the mantle of Mustapha 3000 and dabble in the mysterious rites of Beyond The Wizards Sleeve ‒ a warped Balearic psychedelic brotherhood consisting of Erol and The Grid s Richard Norris. Part folk astronauts, part electronic necromancers, they have reanimated songs by Midlake, Findlay Brown, Goldfrapp, and Tracey Thorn. FERGIE @ Why Not, The Vault, Aviemore, Sat 04 Dec Irish DJ Fergie has been coming up to the Highlands for many years now, playing here long before any of his peers deigned to acknowledge a scene north of the Central Belt. Having started DJing so young that he had to stand on a milk crate to reach the decks, he s built a formidable reputation with residencies in London and Ibiza and gigs worldwide. His studio output has shown no signs of slowing down, with tracks like Konguro , Motion and Slazenger picking up deserved praise. Now comes the long awaited debut album Dynamite and Laserbeams combining tough, rhythmic techno, electro funk, and leftﬁeld electronica. The title apparently reﬂects the cross-community bonds that were established within Northern Irish club culture during Fergie s youth and there are bound to be even more hands of friendship stretched towards him after this one. 18

It s always rather exciting when the Slam boys come to town and the latest visit from Soma s ﬁnest, courtesy of Robotone, should be no exception. For twenty years Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have been riding the stripped down house and techno groove, reinventing it in all sorts of thrilling new ways and they show little sign of slowing down. Indeed, they actually look younger than they did when they started. There s got to be some very wrinkly paintings in the attic. Whatever the case, they re not to be missed. If you saw this duo at Rockness, you ll know just how good a time to expect. Radio 1 regular Toddla (aka Tom Bell) started DJing at 14 in his native Sheffield, but now plays all over the world in addition to a residency at Fabric. His first album, on the very cool 1965 Records featured not only Serocee, but also with Matt Helders from Arctic Monkeys, Benjamin Zephaniah, Roots Manuva, Tinchy Stryder, Joe Goddard and Hervé, showing the admirable openness to a whole heap of influences. Recently signed to the equally influential Ninja Tune, he s working on a follow up as well as producing the likes of Jammer, Trojan Sound System and Tinchy Stryder. Quite a coup for Cake to bring him to Inverness and highlights the reputation the club has swiftly built for getting the big names to town. As well as Toddla, there are plenty of other nights at Cake worth checking out with Wonky House on Fridays, student night Wed nz-da on Wednesdays, Evolve (techno/house/electro) on Sat 04 & Sat 11 Dec, the legendary Scottish club night Spaceball s visit on Sat 18 Dec and the best in alternative music, metal and classic rock at Alternative X on Fri 10.

The Islands are playing an important part in much of the traditional music on offer this month and it was in the Outer Hebrides that PAUL EASTHAM and CHRIS BARNES were, at a young age, inspired by the people, culture and music of the place, something that would eventually find an outlet in COAST. Though based in Southampton these days, the spirit of these parts is ever present in their Celtic Rock and with band members from all four corners of the UK, they’re showing that Traditional music can provide a creative source for folk as far apart as Hampshire and the Hebs. The second album, released this month, features “The Beat of You”, a song co-written by their manager, IAIN BAYNE of Runrig, who also played drums on the track. DUNCAN CHISHOLM of Wolfstone also graces the song with his haunting fiddle.

Woomble seems to come up here almost every month, but what always makes his visits worth checking out is that you’re never quite sure which musical hat he’ll be wearing. Though he came to fame as frontman of rock act Idlewild, he’s also dabbled in more traditional sounds, collaborating with Kris Drever and John McCusker and even providing backing vocals for Kate Rusby. And his solo work is proving to be perhaps his greatest achievement, the well-received albums My Secret Is My Silence and Before The Ruin due to be followed up in spring 2011 by a newie recorded on Mull. Local Music: In Bloom... THE BOOSTS @ Mad Hatters, Thu 23 Dec This is the third year of the popular Festivus night hosted by local DJ Mikey Doug and it’s a strong double bill. THE BOOSTS are made up of ex Jyrojet COLIN FRASER, 28 Jack JAKE BOLT and in demand bassist PAUL ELLIOTT, along with ace drummer MARK WILLIAMSON (The Now/28 Jacks). Judging by the tracks they’ve posted at their myspace (myspace.com/wearetheboosts) they’ve got some treats up their sleeve.

LOCAL ACTS: GIGS their side, after all, there’s much to be said for the duo’s line up of just drums and guitar. And how can you resist anyone with a track called Bruce Bacharacnid? THE SIDE @ Ceol Mor, Sun 19 Dec It’s been quite a year for Alness band THE SIDE, taking in supporting Bon Jovi at London’s 02 Arena, making the “un-official” Ross County Cup Final Song and playing Rockness, Loopallu and the main stage at Bella. They round off the year with a couple of gigs, first here at Ceol Mor then on 27 Dec at Ironworks supporting COMPLETE STONE ROSES. Rudolph’s Winter Wonderland @ Whin Park, 11 & 12 Dec, 4-7pm

One of the highlights of the Winter Festival is the visit of Santa and his reindeer, who have decided that the best place to rest before the hectic chimney-related activities of Christmas Eve is on the banks of the Ness at Whin Park. Originally, he set up on Ness Islands, but giddy goat behaviour by neds (who definitely won t be getting ANY presents) has necessitated his change of location. This new show has been designed for the smaller members of the community and will feature some of the lovely illuminated figures that had previously been displayed on Ness Islands and also some new lighting effects. As well as enjoying the chance to meet Rudolph and his reindeer chums, young visitors are asked to be on the lookout for four extremely naughty Calling Birds who have been attracted to the area by the bright lights that have been erected and are rumoured to have taken up residence on the Island. Santa is planning to pop in around 6pm each day to ensure that everybody is having a good time.

INVERNESS WINTER FESTIVAL

Last year s Hogmanay shindig found itself scuppered by the Arctic weather and so, a year on, we re getting another chance to experience the Red Hot Highland Fling with all the bands originally booked graciously agreeing to come back and give it all another go. Barring a repeat of the climate-madness, this ll be a fine opportunity to see off the old year and welcome the new one in style. It s billed, with a nod to last year as The Red Hot Highland Fling Take Two and the organisers are urging us all to turn out dressed in red which should make for a visually dramatic gathering. It all takes place in Northern Meeting Park and kicks off at 8.30 with the mighty Blazin Fiddles. Ten years on from their original conception as a project for the Highland festival, MacGregor, Massie, Henderson et al have become the most reliably assured purveyors of uplifting fiddle-led sounds around and should provide a perfect party-starting atmosphere. Next up it s the ever popular Red Hot Chilli Pipers, playing at 9.45 so that the whole family will be able to enjoy their Pipes With Attitude delights. Recent visits here have shown them to be right on top of their game right now, something reflected in their nomination for Top Live Act in this year s Traditional Music Awards, so we re pretty much guaranteed something special. Their unique take on familiar songs always has a few surprises, but expect Snow Patrol s Chasing Cars , Deep Purple s Black Knight , Queen s Radio Ga Ga and Robbie Williams Let Me Entertain You to put in an appearance. Headliners for the night are just as celebratory, Peatbog Faeries from Isle Of Skye. Formed in 1994, their music embodies many styles and influences, including rock, jazz, electronica, and folk - but their main influence is traditional celtic music. The band s unique sound is created through a mix of programmed effects and traditional celtic arrangements, played on bagpipes, fiddles, and whistles. Gutted at the cancellation of last year s performance they ve had this one circled in their diary for twelve months so you can be sure they ll be giving it everything they ve got.

The whole show will be hosted by ICA columnist and MFR DJ Ken Kelman and gates open at 8pm. You don t need a ticket, just turn up, although the organisers reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone who has overdone the early evening cocktails. Children are most welcome. AVIEMORE SLED DOG RALLY @ Loch Morlich, 22& 23 Jan Every year, mushers from throughout the UK gather in the forests around Aviemore for the biggest event in the British husky calendar - always hoping for plenty of the white stuﬀ to make it a real arctic experience. And last year, that s exactly what they got, making a tradition that s grown from just a dozen teams in 1984, to more than 200 in recent year s races, very special indeed. Competitors range in age from just eight to 60 and there s something for all the family to see at this great spectator event run on tracks around Loch Morlich in the shadow of the Cairngorms. The rally features teams of between two and eight dogs running at up to 20 miles an hour over a gruelling, four-mile track. Along with the Siberian huskies, rally dogs include Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Greenland Dogs and Canadian Eskimo Dogs. And, even if there s no snow at ground level for the event, the races will still go on with mushers using a three-wheeled rig that looks like a bike without a seat. Good to see that comedy is becoming a regular part of the Inverness cultural landscape, with top notch acts visiting every month. And Kane (pictured) is the most top-notch of all. Officially. As winner of the big award at Edinburgh which used to be known as the Perrier, but which now seems to change its name every ten minutes, he’s finally got the kudos that a fair few years of consistently inventive laughter making deserves. This gig was originally scheduled for a year ago, but kept on being postponed due to a welter of telly work including the ITV2 I’m A Celebrity aftershow, meaning that even if you’re not familiar with his material, you’ll definitely recognise him from the box. This is the show that proved such a hit at Edinburgh, a tightly written account of growing up in Essex with a “racist, homophobic” father. The humour actually makes the reminiscences even more powerful and much like Greg Davies and the mighty Josie Long (both recent visitors to Inverness), it’s good to see comedians moving on from the straight rat-a-tat of jokes and constructing something a little more engaging. Incidentally Kane is married to the equally impressive comedian Sadie Hasler, so a good reception here will perhaps persuade her to come too. Then again, sometimes you want your drama to be about something absolutely ginormous, and it doesn t come any bigger than the creation of the world. That s exactly what you get her as Eden Court s Arts Education Department and Drama Artist in Residence have been working with members of the Highland community on this enchanting adaptation of a medieval mystery play about the beginning of everything. Creation has a cast of around 50 people and will be staged in traverse form (with the audience on two sides!), which should make for an unusual evening. Once again, Fleeman Productions are putting on the work of Charles Barron, famed for Effie and Evie , Guts and A Bosie For Luck . This time they are presenting Doric Snapshots - three short Doric plays in a fascinating evening s entertainment. In the early seventies, Charles Barron s play Fooshion, won the first Total Oil Scottish Playwright s Award and Amang the Craws won the Doric Festival playwriting award. These were both in the Doric dialect of North East Scotland and he found a real excitement in working in the tongue he had known as a child and in his years as a teacher at Inverurie. Doric plays have formed a significant part of his output ever since while works in English or Glaswegian have been produced by companies such as Edinburgh Theatre Workshop, Annexe Theatre of Glasgow, Dragon Productions of Glasgow and Pitlochry Theatre. Amang the Craws was published by Learning + Teaching Scotland who put a copy into every Scottish secondary school for use in Higher English and Drama courses. First up in this triple bill is The Buchan Trap, a gentle romantic comedy. Andrew s domestic water supply has broken down and he is forced to send for the plumber. A young apprentice turns up and gives Andrew the shock of his life. Next, The Chair, a Doric drama. It is a comfortably familiar scene the customer in the salon chair, enjoying the ministrations of the hairdresser. But in this case, the client nurses a secret that will dramatically change the beautician s life. The evening concludes with Not With A Whimper, a comedy. But, if anything, potential punters are spoilt for choice when deciding where to splash what cash there is. In all the years that we’ve been writing about the restaurants of Inverness and the Highlands, there surely can’t have been a time when so much good cooking is on offer at a whole range of prices. Of course there’ll still be a few who consider anything other than mince’n’tatties as pretentious culinary madness, but they’re a dwindling band. Actually, you can get mince’n’tatties (complete with a bread roll) on the bar menu at The Chieftain, so even the most cautious of palates is catered for, but there’s a whole lot more on offer to blow away preconceptions. Perhaps because the place has been such a longtime fixture on the Inverness social scene, it’s easy to take it for granted and forget what an expansive and welcoming place it is. There’s a huge bar with more pool tables than you can shake a stick at, plenty of

TV screens for the footy and the aforementioned bar menu (pies, toasties etc) as well as a big function room and even a few bedrooms. On the night we visit a 21st birthday party is just cranking into gear, freshfaced guests in kilts and skimpy frocks ducking out of the wind and the rain, full of chatter and giggles to embark on an evening that you suspect might just end, er, boisterously. Meanwhile the restaurant, situated in a cosily lit conservatory has a steady stream of customers even though it’s not yet 7pm. There’s a new chef in the kitchen, Matty Urquhart has been at the Chieftain Hotel for just 2 months having worked previously at other popular establishments in Inverness, including the well-respected Café 1 – so he clearly knows what he’s doing. It’s clear from his menu that plenty of thought has been given to achieving a balance between offering a good variety of options without 53

losing the central focus – that of local, seasonal ingredients, quality produce at reasonable prices. There’s a top value early evening two-course offer, but enticed by several of the dishes we plump for à la carte... My starter sets the tone for what is to follow, Seared Scallops on Beetroot Mash and Black Pudding. The presentation is neat and confident and it tastes every bit as good as it looks. Plump, juicy scallops are cooked to perfection, sitting on tiny hillocks of purple beetroot mash, underneath which are discs of deliciously flavoursome and melt-in-the-mouth black pudding. Black pudding actually crops up in several dishes on the menu and when it’s this quality you can see exactly why the chef is so evangelical about using it. Smears of reduced 56

balsamic and wafer thin parsnip crisps give immaculate balance to a tremendously accomplished starter. The inventiveness behind the cooking is also evident in my companion’s starter, a neat twist on Cullen Skink. This one utilises mackerel, salmon and new potatoes, turning a comforting creamy broth into something elegant and fresh. It’s adjudged another winner. For my main course there’s the welcome presence of a much underused and, indeed, underrated fish – in the form of Halibut with Risotto. Far tastier and, one senses, sustainable, than cod, this piece is again cooked perfectly, sitting on an equally fine risotto of Parma ham and crayfish tails. The salt/ sweet contrast of the ham and the shellfish combines with the

creaminess of the risotto and the tender halibut to make for a fabulous winter dish. Another layer of flavour comes from accompanying pesto which could easily have overwhelmed it all, but by being presented at the side of the plate allows you to introduce as much or as little as you wish. Sometimes a restaurant can be let down by what would appear to be the simplest of creations, so my companion puts the theory to the test by ordering Steak and Chips. And the kitchen comes up trumps yet again. Tender steak cooked exactly as ordered, fine chips and, well, steak and chips is, when cooked right, nigh on unbeatable. This was cooked right. While regular readers might be under the impression that we’re

contractually obliged to order Sticky Toffee Pudding wherever it’s offered, there are times where we’ll make an exception. And so, despite The Chieftain offering said delight, we dragged our attention-albeit wistfully- to some even more intriguing looking desserts. Mine is Lemon Meringue Cheesecake which, it has to be said, isn’t an unqualified success. Inevitably, it’s beautifully presented, but as an exercise in deconstructing a classic and reinventing it as a cheesecake it only really removes the best bits of both dishes. The lemony cheesecake is topped by a whisper of meringue, but, while pleasant, it doesn’t really hit the spot. Nevertheless the accompanying ice cream seems homemade and is very much a silky success. My companion’s Belgian Waffles restore our faith though, served with a fine (butterscotch?) sauce, sliced strawberries and more of the fab ice cream, this time in a nifty pastry basket. It’s a suitably triumphant ending to a very good meal indeed. So, another great place to eat in Inverness, with enormously confident cooking, friendly staff and good value for money. Best of all, it shows that the quality of local produce will always shine through. The Chieftain may not be one of the new kids on the block, but it’s turning out some of the best food in town. When you’re planning your festive night out, maybe that’s something you should bear in mind. Total for 2 (exc. drinks) £44.40

Advertisement Will You Be Surprised With Life After Death? We get surprised when things come upon us unexpectedly. Many things that occur in our lives come without warning. Sometimes things like sickness, bills and family crises just cannot be anticipated. Even our own death can come by surprise. What comes after death, however, is something that does not need to be a surprise for anyone. It is not God's desire that you be surprised after you die. He tells us in the Bible that every one of us will live somewhere forever. To be prepared for life after death, we must first examine what we believe about this matter in the light of God's Word, the Bible.

Do you think a person stops existing after death? Hebrews 9:27 says, "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." The word "after" tells us that life does not end with death. No matter what you think will happen when you die, God says that His judgment will follow. If you are anticipating "nothing" after death, you will be surprised!

Do you think God would never send you to hell? Psalm 5:4 says, "For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with Thee." Because God is holy, He must punish sin. Sin cannot be where God is. We are all sinners. If a person's sin is not cleansed by the blood of The Lord Jesus Christ, God must send him to hell, "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). If you think no one goes to hell, you will be surprised!

Do you think being good will get you to heaven? Isaiah 64:6 says, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses [good deeds] are as filthy rags." Being a

good person is not enough to make us acceptable to God. We are still filthy sinners. In God's eyes, all have sinned; "There is none that doeth good, no, not one" (Romans 3:12). Sin means "missing the mark." We have all missed God's mark even though we may do many good things. If you think a person's goodness gets him to heaven, you will be surprised!

Do you think hell will be just a big party? Matthew 13:50 says that the wicked will be cast "into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." A furnace of fire, wailing, and gnashing of teeth do not paint the picture of a party atmosphere. In reality, hell will be filled with only suffering and anguish. Luke 16:22,23 tells of a man who "died, and was buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments." If you think there will be any pleasure in hell, you will be surprised!

Do you put off thinking about death and eternity, hoping it will just "turn out well"? John 3:18 says, "He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." The person who has not trusted in The Lord Jesus Christ is in peril of eternal condemnation already! "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3). These matters are too important to leave unconsidered. The Lord Jesus Christ shed His blood and died on the cross to pay the punishment for your sin that you deserve. “For God so loved the world, that he

have his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16) The resurrection of Christ is

proof that God accepted His payment for sin. If you do not repent of your sin and receive The Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you will be surprised!

The God and Saviour you believe in must be the God and Saviour of the Bible and not a god that only exists in your own imagination. Dear Reader, don’t go to Hell with the knowledge of the way to Heaven in your head. God loves you, and Christ died for you. Repent of your sin and

receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord; He says “..him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37)

...and in Hell he lift up his eyes being in torments...

They flash a small laminated card and casually ask if I’m interested in doors, windows or a conservatory – like that was a perfectly normal thing to call on a random stranger and enquire. I’d like to reply “my house has already got a door, do you see this is it I’m closing on you now...” or “...pretty sure I already have windows, certainly the sunlight gets in to my

living room somehow...”, followed by “...however, my lawnmower’s broken at the moment. You don’t know when the next seller of garden implements is due in the area do you, only the grass is getting pretty wild and I can‘t for the life of me think how I‘m going to get a new mower unless some one calls at my front door offering to sell me one”. Usually though I dismiss them by saying I’d love a conservatory but I ask, pointing to my postagestamp-sized backyard: “where would I put it?” That way they know it’s not their fault the sale fell through. They want to sell me a conservatory and I want to buy one, but geographical circumstances dictate otherwise. It’s no-one’s fault, both sides are happy and I can get back to Bargain Hunt before I miss the sumptuous red satin being whisked off too... KEN

People trying to sell you things on the phone when you haven’t asked them to, that’s annoying, isn’t it? They almost always call when you’re watching something good on the television and usually at the very best part of the programme too. Just when they’re about to show us the wild card to on To Buy or Not To Buy... or, and even more annoyingly... just as they’re revealing the blue team’s bonus buy on Bargain Hunt. There’s Tim, whipping off the sumptuous blue satin and the insistent chirping of the telephone ruins the mood. You always know it’s someone selling something because there’s always a long silence after you’ve – as cheerfully as possible given the circumstances – said ‘hello’. Then it’s ‘can I speak to the owner of the property‘, or if they’ve done their homework, they actually ask for you by name, which is devious because it’s difficult to answer ‘I’m sorry I’m out at the moment, can I take a message for me?’ and retain any credibility. In the past couple of years I’ve noticed these callers have stopped asking for the owner of the house and now with monotonous regularity ask me if Mrs Junner is in. I tell them that there’s no Mrs Junner living at this address and, to my knowledge, there never has been and would they please stop calling to ask for her and please remove my phone number form her details in their file! Thank you very much. One caller, to give credit where it’s due, after I’d said this to her asked if perhaps I’d be interested in whatever product or service she’d called to offer Mrs Junner. I told her I would most certainly not and slammed the phone down. Then spent the evening wondering exactly what product or service I’d said no to. The thing is I’m pretty sure they ask for Mrs Junner in order to get round the laws about randomly cold calling people, if questioned they can say it was a genuine wrong number and they really were looking for old Mrs J. What I want to know is do they ask for the Junner lady on every call they make or is her name reserved for my phone number? In short have you ever received a call for a Mrs Junner? On the plus side, at least fewer double glazing firms seem to phone me these days. Now they just come to my front door. Usually it’s someone I feel a bit sorry for, often it’s raining when they ring the doorbell and they stand there bedraggled, seemingly not wanting to be there any more than I want then to be there.
