IG:LU is becoming a regular source of interesting artistic endeavours with recent shows as diverse as a tremendously funny series of drawings/words from world-famous Chris (Simpsons’ artist) and an extensive collection of Adam Ant films and videos to tie in with his Inverness show. The man himself even popped up to the gallery to express his approval... Now for the seventh IG:LU show it’s the turn of GEORGINA PORTEOUS take over the place. Born in Glasgow, she studied Television and Sound Studies in that city, later completing a fine art BA with honours at Moray School Of Art. Several solo and group shows all over the country have given her the chance to demonstrate a desire to work not just with drawing, but also video, sculpture and installation. Winner of 2010’s Blackbox Award from Glasgow Arches she’s also been Set Designer for The Giant Olive Theatre, Kentish Town, London, since 2009 and most recently you may have caught her work with the Conch (Sound Studio) by Walker and Bromwich as Conch Guardian and Documentor for its 2011 Highland Tour. In a statement about her work she says, “The viewers are at liberty to engage with the pieces, interpreting them in their own way, influenced by personal experience, emotion and attitude. Each individual will have a unique response. I see myself as a spatial artist using mixed media. My recent installations have made use of numerous materials including sound, video, bedpans and helium filled inflatables, snow globes, CAD designed squirrel embryos, formaldehyde and vaginal specula.” As with all her work, the exhibition at Iglu will be site specific and we’re promised videos, sound installations, a hanging piece and more, with sound design by SiD InneS. www.theig.lu www.georginaporteous.com www.facebook.com/georgina.porteous

NIGEL RIGDEN: OIL & WATER - THE WORKING LANDSCAPE OF THE CROMARTY FIRTH 06 Jun-14 Jul, Sun to Thur 12-4pm With a name like Nigel Rigden, abbreviated for his website to rignig, surely this is one man destined to take photos of the rigs at Nigg. And that’s just what he’s done, recording the working landscape of the Cromarty Firth for several years, capturing the connection between the grandeur of the environment and the scale of the manmade structures within it. In addition to that, the location of the show is spot-on as travelling to the exhibition forms part of the experience with visitors having the opportunity to view the subject matter first hand as they approach Cromarty. The project is ongoing, but this is an impressive start. www.nigrig.com

Having lived most of his life close to the sea he’s acquired a passion for beachcombing and it’s that accumulation of “junk” that informs his work, with found objects presented behind glass and treated as relics, giving them a whole new meaning. A hidden gem in the heart of the city.

25TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR DISASTER, through July - A photo exhibition of the work of the Inverness Link of Chernobyl Children’s Life Line, in support of the children of Belarus. The children come from areas that remain contaminated by fallout from the nuclear explosion of 26th April 1986. GOLF, 5–14 July During the first Scottish Golf Open to be held at Castle Stuart in July 2011, Moray Art Centre is exhibiting ‘Golf”, an art book of the story of golf. Limited edition art prints from the handmade, 18 chapter, 140 page masterpiece, plus copies of the 575 page Collector Edition (limited to 2100) will be on display and available at the exhibition. ‘Golf’ is an editorialised art collection that tells the story of the game, the terrain and where it’s all going. morayartcentre.org

It’s been a labour of love for director ASIF KAPADIA to make this documentary about possibly the greatest racing drive r of all time, with his family understandably protective of his legacy. The result is a beautifully constructed documentary journey through the life and untimely death of the last F1 driver to perish on the track. A worldwide initiative that might not get trumpeted as loudly as it deserves to the big, wide world, but which is well known to schools across the globe, particularly on these shores, with this year’s UK tour involving 45 events across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, involving 25,000 young people aged 7-18 from 376 schools and colleges. The rationale behind it all is to promote healthy life choices for youngsters with teams of 11 to 18 year olds split into teams to work on choreography, dance and drama performances which tell the story of a theme of their choice set to music. The challenge is also to be the best that they can without the use of nicotine, alcohol or other drugs, and there are severe penalties for anyone who fails that challenge on any event day and for their team too. There are several Highland schools taking part, namely Alness Academy, Charleston Academy, Dingwall Academy, Inverness Royal Academy and Thurso High School. Most notably one STEVE AGYEI, who you might not have heard of, but whose work you’ll most definitely have seen. He’s one of the world’s most versatile fitness trainers and choreographers, combining his extensive knowledge of fitness, sport, dance, yoga and music gained from a career spanning over 25 years. Not only has he danced in a plethora of West End musicals, but he’s also performed with THE SPICE GIRLS, STING, PAUL MCCARTNEY, U2, MARIAH CAREY, CLIFF RICHARDS and ALL SAINTS as well as appearing in over 50 pop videos. As a choreographer he has worked with BEYONCÉ, J-LO and DAVID BECKHAM for the global launch of a Pepsi Commercial campaign in Madrid. He regularly choreographs for ADIDAS and UMBRO, for their kit launches and global conferences working with global sporting icons such as MUHAMMAD ALI and David Beckham. ‘Year Of The Ness’ is a curious tag for the festival - was it not that last year? And more interestingly, will it not be next year? That weird sh*t aside, RockNess 2011 is playing pretty much true to form, with THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS leading a sound, underlying dance line-up topped with a bit of indie froth and Britain’s best live band, KASABIAN. A mini debate rages over the re-currence of a fair number of acts - is that loyalty and good, or repetitiveness and less good? Both probably! That Paolo Nutini headlines is perhaps no surprise given the constant shift of the big festivals to Commerce-over-Character - and he’s certainly popular round these parts. Some older heads round here yearn for a festival sticking to its roots for the long run, but we won’t let it spoil our fun just yet... The location has had a headstart of several million years on the majority of desperately constructed sites. You come to Rockness knowing you’re going to get big weather and bigger landscapes, but know that there’s always going to be a moment during the weekend when a moment of music resonates under the huge skies while the light hits the Loch – and you there’s nowhere else on earth you’d rather be. Quite why the whole event isn’t televised is a question we ask every year and remains unanswered. After all, only last month Ferne Cotton et al stretched their London-rooted umbilical cords as far as Carlisle to fawn over “Gaga”, so they must be ready by now for the heathen North?

Rock n KASABIAN - As you can see, we’ve divided this spread into rock and dance acts, but such is the ebb and flow ‘twixt the two in this 21st century of ours that were anyone to have to choose to fight on either side it would end up as confusing as Culloden. Kasabian, for example, are as inspired by the arms in the air euphoria of raves as their undoubted facility for crafting the big rock shapes. Their gig a couple of years back at Ironworks remains one of the finest shows the venue has ever seen - it’s no surprise they’ve gone on to become Britain’s best live band - it’s their only Scottish festival this year, so we can feel a little smug about that. Those festival-sized classics will rub shoulders with freshly crafted new material - we wonder will RockNess 2011 climax early? n FRIGHTENED RABBIT - Not playing Bella, so your only chance to catch the increasingly confident indie creations of a band whose name gets less apt with every passing moment. n TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB - Singing in a Belfast accent always has to be applauded, as well as ripping into every song like a bomb’s about to go off. By the end of the summer you might be sick of their ubiquity, but for now they’re mightily impressive. n BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB - A band who’ve slogged their way up relentlessly and still divide some on the originality of their content, but they’ve built up a loyal fanbase and proved that there might be something in single-minded determination after all. n MARK RONSON - We met him at RockNess a few years back when he came simply as a fan, albeit dressed more elegantly than anyone within a hundred miles. Hopefully his charismatic
geniality and unshakeable love of pop will come across in what’s bound to be a DJ set soundtracking the best party you haven’t had yet. n THE WOMBATS - Their career rather went off track for a while due to a whole heap of personal problems, but they’re back with a new album that shows they’ve plenty more rattling good songs to match the glorious “Let’s Dance To Joy Division”. n GLASVEGAS - Much like The Wombats, Glasvegas got battered by the hurricane of success and are back with a new album too. Theirs is perhaps a bit of a disappointment after the magnificent Spectoresque debut, but they’ve more than enough walls of sound and heartbreaking lyricism to ensure that there’ll be grown men sobbing by the end of it all. n JAMIE WOON - Tipped at the beginning of the year as definitely one of the ones to watch, Woon has transcended the hype with some fabulous songs and a distinctive voice. That’ll be the curse of great expectations dispatched then. n WOLF GANG - Max McElligott and his pals, making music influenced by David Byrne, Brian Eno and a certain Mr Bowie. He loves classical music, dropped out of the London School of Economics two months before his finals and turned down a job with the Foreign Office to do what he does. And it seems to be paying off, especially now he’s working with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann. n MORNING PARADE - Harlow five piece who, much like Kasabian, try to incorporate euphoric dance spirit in their rock template. It’s a formula that’s building quite a buzz with Zane Lowe incapable of going a day without cheering them along.

With no Fatboy Slim appearance this year, they’re a seamless substitute to make all the right uplifting noises while the sun goes down on Loch Ness and a million stars twinkle in the skies. Either that or a reason to keep on dancing while the rain pours down. n DJ SHADOW - AKA Joshua Paul Davis, seminal figure in the development of hip hop and long time collaborator with Mo’ Wax’s James Lavelle. His DJ sets are a thing of wonder, weaving samples into proceedings with more invention and verve than you’ll ever have heard before. n SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO - Producers and DJs whose remixes for the likes of Klaxons, Go! Team and Air are often even better than the originals. n GROOVE ARMADA - Old hands at the festival thing, their shows often end up like a scene from the Rio Carnival so expect plenty of glitter and feathers to accompany their lush sounds. n NERO Providing something a little different from the other music on offer, Nero, a duo of Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray are mighty

hese words, for me, epitomise what Morrissey is all about. Forceful yet literary expressions of compassion. One of the reasons he has touched so many lives, has endured through more than a quarter of a century of press indifference, is that for many people he redefined what it was to be a man. You could be strong AND sensitive - and intelligent to boot. He wrote songs for the vulnerable, the lonely, the uncertain. “Don’t forget the songs that made you cry - and the songs that saved your life”. He appeared on TOTP sporting a hearing aid and NHS specs - inventing real geek chic! He made people think - many are now vegetarian because of him. But really, it’s all about the words - a lyricist without precedent or peer - the pen, in Moz’s hands, truly is greater than the sword. Vilified and vaunted in almost equal measure it seems, since launching himself onto an unsuspecting music world in 1983, Morrissey declines all offers to retire gracefully and preserve the rarified legend that was The Smiths – preferring instead to produce a prolific body of work as a solo artist, weathering much criticism, losing of labels and hysterical media accusations along the way. Studying those 9 studio albums, he has produced some stunning songs, often overlooked by a jaded music press more intent on trashing the icon they couldn’t tame. His greatest ‘crime’ is refusing to explain himself to the media - back in the early 90’s he was accused of being racist because he dared to wrap himself in a union jack and play with retro 70’s skinhead imagery. Yet he was openly courting ‘skinheads with nail varnish’ as fans and it’s funny that a few short, ironic months later those same music hacks would be sticking that same flag all over the place lauding ‘Britpop’ on such lesser talents as, Oasis, Blur and er, Echobelly! For someone who’s very essence is about being a compassionate human being, and a self-professed lover of reggae and soul music, it makes no sense whatsoever to cast him as racist. To love his own culture, warts and all, and regret the loss of it over time is a different matter entirely. Amidst all this mixed reaction here, Morrissey was busy breaking America (who was the last British artist to successfully do that?) and becoming an astonishingly great live singer. It is without question that Morrissey will stand the test of time - a truly remarkable talent perhaps destined for more acclaim in retrospect than in his prime - which is NOW, by the way! Interesting that in a huge poll to find Britain’s Greatest Living Icon a couple of years back, he was topped only by cuddly Sir David Attenborough - and saw the revered Sir Paul McCartney off into thrid place. Perhaps the tide is turning... See you at Ironworks. GH

1996, a fruitful musical partnership that also found an outlet as part of the Frith Piano Quartet. Scott Langley has been there from the outset of the house music revolution in Inverness - 1992 to be precise. From his legendary Railway Club gigs in the 90s, he’s plied his trade at gigs around the world including Tokyo and Melbourne, and closer to home - Aberdeen, Dundee and London. He refuses to be pigeon-holed, he just churns out tune after tune of groove-infused beats. His club night State of Grace was a mainstay of the north’s club scene for 20 odd years - with guest DJs such as James Holden, Mauro Piccoto and Lee Burridge to name but a few. DOLLY THE SHOW at Ironworks on Fri 08 Jul (www. ironworksvenue.com) has perhaps the hardest tribute task of all, to capture the excellence of Ms Parton, a woman whose appeal rests on far more than impressive frontage. Hopefully this two hour performance will communicate her wit and playfulness as well as the genuinely moving personality that, er, underpins a barrel load of great songs.

ED STAFFORD - Walking The Amazon: Eden Court, Mon 27 Jun Of all the expeditions to undertake, a trip down the Amazon always seems most classically adventurous and also rife with a myriad of potential hazards. And that’s if you go by boat, what with it being a river and everything. Which makes Ed Stafford’s decision to try and walk its length an undertaking of spectacular foolhardiness. And us look like underachieving scaredy cats on learning that he actually achieved what he set out to do, taking 860 days (that’s almost three years!) to traverse its 4000 mile length and becoming the first explorer ever to do so. Even Sir Ranulph Fiennes, a man for whom no waking of elemental stricture, praised Stafford’s trip as “truly extraordinary”. Ed wrote about his adventure in his soon to be released book Walking The Amazon and now he’s here to recount some of his tales. He might even explain why

MARYMAS FAIR: Northern Meeting Park Sat 18 Jun Marymass is the Scottish name for the feast of the assumption, usually celebrated in midAugust, but in Inverness it has been moved to the third Saturday of June and had the final “s” lopped off its name. Now in its 25th year, the Marymas Fair sees a local schoolgirl crowned Marymas Queen (with presumably no talk of “being” Dead Mary) at the Town House before everyone repairs to Northern Meeting Park for a fair, with stalls, sideshows, entertainment, barbecue and more. Over 3000 visitors are expected for an event which this year has a medieval theme. The crowning takes place at the Town House at 11.15am.

SNOOKER LEGENDS:
To whet your appetite, we caught up with the mighty Jimmy “Whirlwind” White and Tabb to ask them what it’s all about.
The final of the recent Snooker World Championships was one of the most exciting for years, drawing a huge TV audience and, in runner-up Judd Trump, giving people a glimpse of someone who’s bound to be one of the sport’s dazzling lights over the years to come. Because if there’s one thing the sport is missing these days, it’s genuine stars, with Ronnie O’ Sullivan perhaps the only one who really thrills. If you miss some of the characters from the old days, you’ll welcome this Snooker Legends night where Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott, John Virgo and Cliff Thorburn are gathered together with top snooker ref Michaela Tabb making sure everyone plays by the rules. In addition to regular tickets there’s a VIP package available with pre-match champagne reception with the players, premium seat and souvenir brochure. There’s even a chance for one member of the audience to partner a legend in a game of doubles.

In our eyes, you’re the biggest legend of them all, but does doing this tour mean you’ve decided you’re not going to get that elusive World Championship you always deserved? Certainly not, I’m still as keen as ever to play on the main tour and still believe that if I can get past qualifying for the world championships then my experience at the venue itself could help me do very well there. The Legends Tour means I get to get a summer of practice but also get the chance to meet the fans and renew old rivalries with Cliff, Dennis and John Parrott. We remember bumping into you some years ago in an after-hours club in Brixton playing cards the night before going on to play magnificent snooker in a competition. How typical was that as preparation for a big match? Ha ha, did I win the card game? Sadly that was the usual preparation but nowadays you’re more likely to find me tucked up in bed before a game...times have changed! Only Ronnie O’Sullivan seems to have the same pizzazz that
Loopy ! robbed the game of characters? The characters are still there, they just don’t seem to be able to express themselves in the way we used to. Many players have managers and PR people and get told what to say, when to smile etc. Ronnie is different, he does it his way and that’s why people love him. For me he’s the greatest talent we’ve ever had in the game. What do you think of Barry Hearn’s ideas for reinventing snooker with shorter, faster games? It’s the best thing to happen to snooker in years; Barry has a track record of being successful in any sport he’s involved in. I love things like shot clocks and short frames although I’m not quite as fast as I used to be! If you were sixteen now, would you consider snooker as a career? Absolutely, it’s a fantastic sport and it’s all I’ve ever known. What can people expect from the Legends tour show? It’s a show, full of fun but also competitive snooker. John Virgo does his impressions and commentates throughout the games, basically taking the mickey when we miss! Dennis makes me laugh every show and Cliff also has a great dry sense of humour. It really is the most fun I’ve ever had on a snooker tour... and I’ve done a few! It’s great to be coming to Scotland and I hope the fans will come along and see us.
MICHAELA TABB:
People talk about the macho culture of snooker, but it seems its one of the few sports where the presence of a female official doesn’t raise an eyebrow. Has it really been that easy to get accepted? At the beginning I was accepted by the players as they knew I was a very accomplished 9 ball referee. I wasn’t accepted by the other referees or some of the ‘old school’ and had to prove myself to them. I basically kept my head down and worked hard, kept my mouth shut and didn’t’ cause myself any problems! With the players it was great because they made it worthwhile by accepting me so readily, without their support I wouldn’t have made it, I know that... What first made you want to be a referee? I didn’t! Having played amateur pool you had to referee each other’s games when you played league. I always seemed to do more than fair share because I liked it and I then fell into televised pool refereeing as my husband was invited to play and he suggested I would be a good referee from Scotland. (It was a televised event in Scotland and we weren’t married then!! ) As a former pool player what was the transition to snooker like? Very easy as I never played snooker, but I was a fan who watched it since I was 11ish... You were a bit of a science boffin at college. What do you think you’d have ended up doing if you hadn’t been led astray by hanging round pool halls? I was very much science based at school but I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. At the time there wasn’t a lot of career guidance so you went to college because you didn’t know what the other options were. Do you miss playing? Only when I go to a pool event

that all my old friends are playing in. It’s hard to watch then when I was so used to be a Scottish International beside them. Are any other female referees coming through? What advice would you give them? Lots more coming through from all over the world now! My path has made it easy for them, there isn’t a stigma attached anymore so they shouldn’t need any special attention. I would just advise that they treat it as a career if that’s what they want and don’t just be a ‘fan’.

If you’re the same, you might want to participate in the Inverness Welfare Cricket League which looks to 20/20 as a blueprint, with 12-14 eight ball overs, loads of bowlers and batsmen “retiring” once they reach twenty, so everyone gets a chance to participate. There are currently 6 teams playing; Balloch, Beauly, Kirkhill, Waterfront, Corriegarth and (a new team this year) Merkinch which is being organised by the Rev Burkitt from Fortrose who does a lot of admirable work with the underprivileged and those affected by drug problems. The journey from Inverness to Portmahomack is a wonderful introduction to the Highland landscape and, at just under an hour, a perfect way to get a feel for its majesty. Lush greenery backdropped by mountains still snow-peaked in May, picture postcard views at every turn and even at one point a field of absurdly cute Shetland ponies. Then, just before Dornoch, you turn off onto a deserted peninsula for a ten mile drive passing through a place called, oddly, Gaza (time for a twinning with Palestine and the other Gaza Strip?) before coming upon the charming village of Portmahomack. Houses, built on one of the oldest Pictish sites in the country are huddled against the
hugest of skies with the sea almost dismissively tossing the boats in the harbour and an ever changing vista over to Dornoch and the mountains beyond, it’s an awesome sight. And, uniquely for an east coast village, it actually faces west, meaning there are also spectacular sunsets thrown into the mix. Quite a place. So, if you’re a visitor to the region and want to get a feel for the wildness and grandeur of the Highlands without having to trek up any mountains, you could do a lot worse than make for Portmahomack. Particularly since at the end of your journey there’s the prospect of a meal at THE OYSTERCATCHER. A restaurant with rooms, it’s built a reputation through loyal customers who, judging by online reviews, regularly make special visits from all over the country, and indeed the world,
to sample not only its famous seafood, but also what one travel guide insists is “the best breakfast in the world”. And it’s that breakfast that’s the first clue to The Oystercatcher being more than just a bed and breakfast joint with a nice view. First off, it costs you twenty quid (though that’s included in the £70 price of a room) and there’s enough on offer to set you up not only for the rest of the day, but possibly the next six months. Among the delights are Grilled Oysters, Pork Belly and Black Pudding, Champagne and Whisky Cocktails and Lamb’s Kidney On Toast. And that’s not to mention a myriad of egg/bacon/sausage/porridge variations. You can book a breakfast in advance if you’re not a resident and it’s got to be an experience worth trying. The place itself definitely aims for a spirit of homeliness rather than clinical fine

dining, though don’t expect to walk away from an evening meal with much change from a hundred quid. The restaurant menu is as extensive as the breakfast one, with the emphasis very much on the best quality seafood (they have a certificate allowing them to buy fish straight off the boats) and the ambition of cooking is clear to see with dishes like “’Oystercatcher’ Mussels, Scallops, Absinthe Splash Pools, Herring Roe Rocks &’Jellyfish’ in a Pastis Sea with Crab Shingle, Langoustine Sand & Seaweed”. And there surely can’t be anywhere else in the world where you’ll get something like that, even if we’re not entirely sure we’d want to. We could have ordered from the restaurant menu if we’d

wished to, but go instead for the more scaled-down and inexpensive bistro version. It’s here that we first come across the concept of dishes being served in two sizes, either “ample” (normal) or “hearty” (massive). Not quite sure what the point of that is as it seems to unnecessarily complicate things and there are far too many tempting things on the menu already without having to worry as well about what size portions to go for. On the day we visit, the only other customers are a braying foursome from down south who insist on loudly recounting tales of getting private jets to France, filling their houses with bottles of the best champagne and accidentally falling into hedges. They order Lobster Thermidor
at £40 a pop and continue their incessant boasting as we consider joining some sort of class war organisation or simply wrenching an anchor from its decorative spot on the wall and setting about them with as much gusto as they’re using dismantling the lobsters. Fortunately we calm down a bit when another couple come in, fresh it seems from a long walk, and order just a pot of tea. They’re treated with just as warm a welcome from the friendly staff as the people spending a hundred times more sitting next to them – which makes us feel that all is good with the world after all. the buttery juices mopped up by a tremendous selection of unusual breads from the complimentary basket. My companion bravely goes for the “unusual” combination of Pea and Pureed Black Pudding Soup – which turns out to be a lot nicer than it sounds, though he does feel that the taste of the black pudding rather overpowers the flavour of what would have been a bit nicer as a simple pea and mint soup. It’s served with a separate tray of various seeds and an unidentifiable line of brown powder. Bit too early in the day for heroin isn’t it? Still, the seeds give an unusual twist to the dish letting you customise it as you please. There’s a Cullen Skink on offer that’s apparently top notch and you can imagine the different textures provided by such an addition would raise it to even greater heights. For my main course I go for something of house speciality and a much underrated fish, Sole. It’s served here several ways with various accompaniments and I have mine “Portmahomack” style – Rolled, Steamed and stuffed wth Fresh Crabmeat. It’s served on a plate shaped like a fish with yet more strange powdery embellishments and
covered in a sauce that slightly disguises the excellence of the fish and the crab, both of which are of the very highest quality. They’re accompanied by fabulously moreish chips (closer to mini roast potatoes) served in nifty miniature “fish fryer” baskets. My companion has another of the starters as a main course, Lobster Cocktail, and it pretty much sets the benchmark for the dish. Lobster claw and avocado. Simple and brilliant. Only the accompanying seaweed salad (which also cropped up with my sole) detracted from proceedings, never really transcending its resemblance in appearance and taste to a small pile of rubber bands. In a way it’s a shame that we can only sample such a small part of an alluring and extensive menu and future visits will surely entail having the likes of Highland Shellfish Platter, Duck Leg Confit on Cassoulet Ecosse, Grilled Pork Belly with Lentil Stew and Cajun Lobster Omelette. Instead we’re left with just space for puddings, though we’re advised that some of them might take a while since they have to be cooked from scratch. These warnings come up regularly throughout the
menu and though there’s a certain homely charm to such an admission it does make you think that with a full restaurant things could get out of control before too long. Not wanting to give the kitchen any added stress, we go for the pre-prepared options, my companion getting a particularly fine Banoffi Sundae complete with banana ice cream, nuggets of Pavlova and a sweet strawberry on top. My Selection of Mini Desserts includes a tremendous apple puree and whisky affair, strawberry meringue and a raspberry tart, providing a fine end to a pretty impressive meal. As destination restaurants for Highland seafood goes, The Oystercatcher is up there with Applecross Inn (and rather easier to get to), although its website and menu could possibly do with being revamped and streamlined to fully highlight its strengths. Casual footfall isn’t probably that predominant thanks to the location, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Just think of all those breakfasts and sunsets. Total for 2 (exc. drinks) £53.90

Lets be honest, the balmy climate is not the reason any of us stay (or came to stay) in the Highlands. Let’s just say it’s maybe not our strongest asset. However, the upshot of this is that we have become particularly skilled at draining every last bit of goodness out of every drop of sunshine that we are afforded. Luckily we don’t have to waste any of our precious sunshine hours hidden away indoors when we want to share a relaxing beverage with friends because we have a wonderful selection of Beer Gardens in and around Inverness. The clever people of Bavaria developed the ‘Biergarten’ as a way of keeping beer cool in the summer months but they soon became a popular place to hang out – or whatever the 19th century equivalent of ‘hanging out’ was.

Now, while we don’t have anything quite on that enormous scale in Inverness, we do have some very special places to do our own hanging out en masse. The simple beer garden has of course become a place where more and more people want/need to frequent since the advent of the smoking ban. This has meant that a great many establishments now offer excellent facilities for their clientele, not to mention outdoor heaters for those times when the summer lets us down a bit.

Because we cannot save ourselves by good works, good character, personal effort, or merit of any kind, God sent His Son to die as a substitute for sinners like you and me. When the Lord Jesus died on the cross and rose again on the third day, He finished the work necessary for salvation. Reading Sarah Burton’s recent account of how the Royal wedding commission came about, brought me a distinct sense of deja-vu. “The Palace called” Burton recollects, followed by a collaboration with the future bride, then follow-up appointments including a succession of clandestine toings and froings to a hideout in Wales. All top secret. My Palace call came on 29 April, 1999. When this happens out of the blue, what one doesn’t
suspect, is that the Palace has already done the forensic. They know about you. My commission was to create an ensemble for HM The Queen for the Opening of the Scottish Parliament. Given carte-blanche, meant I had to provide the inspirational storyboards for the event. I chose the Scottish thistle and the Isle of Skye tartan. Meetings at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle were in secret. Fast forward to a specially dyed mauve Italian silk and wool fitted frockcoat, worn over a pale green wool crepe dress overlaid with French silver and khaki green Paisley designed lace. I might add, all from the same French lace source as the Burton frock. This was complemented by a Bespoke hat by Royal Milliner Philip Somerville, decked in pheasant plumes. Over her shoulder, she wore the Isle of Skye wool tartan plaid in cloth by Lochcarron, and in place with the Oban brooch from her private collection. Her mauve cotton gloves were specially dyed, the petite silk handbag just big enough for her handkerchief and spectacles, and finally her Bespoke bronze silk taffeta shoes, made by her Chiltern Street cobbler. The Royal wedding trousseau, on the other hand, was a collaboration. Miss Catherine had already set her heart on the whole Grace Kelly look, having seen the real thing in the V&A exhibition in summer 2010. Who could blame her? Sarah Burton’s task was to personalize this Kelly signature, and brought in the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace to embellish the silk satin gazar. They paintstakingly appliquéd the lace onto the gazar, so that the Burton-led secret team of cutters, dressmakers, fitters and needlewomen, each of them contributing to the sum of its parts. On the finale outcome, Burton rightfully received the world’s admiration and praise, emphasizing it was on behalf of the team. [continues...]

The lone woman charged, Mary Surratt, 42, owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks. Against the ominous back-drop of post-Civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer, Frederick Aiken, a 28-yearold Union war-hero, reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt before a military tribunal. As the trial unfolds, Aiken realizes his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son.
