Sep 2011

Is that summer gone then? Even though the torrent of tourists has begun to dissipate, there’s little let up in events all over the area. So this month you can take in everything from the LOCH NESS MARATHON and NAIRN TRIATHLON to the climax of BLAS, sublime skills from DJ YODA, cinema at the car park courtesy of IOTA, X-Factor winner MATT CARDLE, an audience with the massively influential JONATHAN MILLER and top theatre in the form of KES and one man show about the saintly ALEC GUINNESS. On top of all that there’s the visit to MIAMI of rapper MANN as portrayed sensitively on the cover by CHRIS (SIMPSONS ARTIST) who first exhibited at IG:LU and is rapidly becoming something of a sensation. Enjoy.

Welcome to The September Issue, dudes...

NATHAN - His pieces are based around his thoughts and feelings and are inspired by the city. Influences are artists like Peter calleson and Julian Beever. JAMES - 22 yrs, half of the driving force behind the only skate shop in Inverness, Creative Skate Store. He uses the shop as a focus for his photography aiming to capture the right moment within each and every skateboarder’s performance. With a previous background in studio photography James uses that knowledge to freeze his outdoor shoots in a similar manner to give it a clean look that jumps off the image. HOLLIE - Highland print & textile designer/ illustrator, inspired by everything from old photographs, literature, the Scottish countryside, memories, stories, song lyrics, love and family. She has an individual drawing style and a sensitive colour pallete. She uses a vareity of mixed media and collage which are later translated onto fabric silk screen and digital prints. Her work is highly illustrative and evokes a strong sense of romance and time. GWEN - Her practice explores the uncanny and the feminine. Her photographic works are a journey into female sexuality, identity, time and space. She references and draws influence from a variety of sources such as contemporary cinema, fairytales, graphic novels and artworks. FAITH - Photography is a way for her to show you how she sees the world around her. This world is her studio, and her eye is the lens. When in front of the lens, she pretends. When she is behind the camera, she feels she is herself. Now she is showing you this world. The world that comes alive when looked at closer. This world remains, yet changes, before her very eyes. Before your very eyes. This is her world. DUNCAN - Duncan is a primitive, or naive “artist” not fussed so much for the technical merits and rights and wrongs but more for a ‘feeling’; “I like how children see things and the world. Its uncomplicated. The sky ends there and the earth starts here.” Duncan takes his inspiration from a range of things but artists such as Ed and Deanna Templeton, Mark Gonzales, and musicians such as Aiden John Moffat and Conor Oberst really inspire him. “Doodling, painting and skateboarding separate us from the “reality’s” of life. They remind us not to take things too seriously, to view the world creatively, but also as a child would.”

ROBBIE (main pic) - Local artist who studied briefly at Gray’s school of art in Aberdeen before leaving due to illness in 1999, despite this he has carried on drawing and painting. In 2007 he decided to devote more time, energy and focus into his work and has recently exhibited a few pieces in various spaces. Much of Robbie’s work explores form, composition, colour and expression, much of it annotates a spiritual journey in the artists own life and expresses aspects of life, fears and victories, human lostness and desperation overshadowed by the greater reality of redemption in Christ.

MAKE IT NEW JOHN [Duncan Campbell]

Sublime - A Cinema With A Difference

ART

This month Inverness Old Town Rose Street Car Park is gearing up to be transformed:

For the last weekend in September (23 – 25th), the car park is being used to screen a whole range of films, including artists’ films, documentaries, short films and classic features. The project, SUBLIME, is led by SUSAN CHRISTIE’s IOTA (Inverness Old Town Art) team. Working with car park staff on the weekend event, this is cinema with a difference, bringing different audiences together for one unique experience. On each evening of the weekend there will be screenings of artists’ films on the ROOF TOP of the car park at 7pm. Friday 23rd sees a programme of works which explore the power and beauty of the natural landscape, and includes work by Black Isle native, artist KATY DOVE, and Balkaniel by artist SHONA ILLINGWORTH, now London based but who brought was up near Cape Wrath. The programme also includes a screening of the winner of the Best Short at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival 2011, THERE IS PLACE, by Highland based artists SIMON FILDES and KATRINA MCPHERSON. Saturday 24th evening’s films deal with the idea of community – reflecting Inverness as a place with a strong sense of historical and cultural identity. Films include SIMON YUILL’s GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE which tells the story of the Pollok Free Estate in Glasgow, whilst FRANCIS ALŸS beautiful WHEN FAITH MOVES MOUNTAINS is a parable on the power of the human spirit. Then, bringing the global to the local, KEVIN MACDONALD’s amazing new documentary LIFE IN A DAY * brought together short films selected from 4500 hours of films submitted from people in 140 nations, who all filmed themselves on one day – 24th July 2010. Were you one of them? *We hear a rumour that Inverness Town House may

feature in the film - see if you can spot it!

Sunday evening features a film by Irish artist DUNCAN CAMPBELL, whose film MAKE IT NEW JOHN explores the rise and fall of John Delorean.

Focusing on Delorean’s design and promotion of the infamous car we know best now as the ‘Back to the Future car’, this is also an exploration of how the media manipulates figures in history to its own ends. A world premiere of TRAIL OF TEARS, the new film by Moray based artist GRAEME ROGER and KEVIN REID, rounds up the evening. Saturday and Sunday afternoons sees some screenings in the car park downstairs as well as some live performance and talk events. On Saturday afternoon looking at music as a theme, there will be a screening of HEAVY METAL JUNIOR which tells the fantastically entertaining story of a group of teenagers from Stirling and their band Hatred; followed by live performance from a local band. Sunday afternoon sees a change of pace, reminiscing about the Meeting Room’s previous life as a Registry office – perhaps you or someone you know got married there , we’d love to hear from you! – with a screening of the classic James Stewart/ Katherine Hepburn/ Cary Grant film, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. If any of you are inspired to turn up in your wedding finery, please do! A screening of EADAR CHLUICH/INTERLUDES, short wordless films from a range of contemporary directors all inspired by Gaelic songs, is followed with a live performance of Gaelic music and song from Brian Ò hEadhra and Fiona Mackenzie in the unusual surrounds of the car park.

YUM! Café will be supporting the event, supplying all the refreshments you need for your Cinema With A Difference visit. So come along and take part! All events are free. Programme detail can be found at www. Invernessoldtownart.co.uk

With a one man show about the wonderful Alec Guinness coming to town this month (see p34), we’re reminded that his portrayal of George Smiley in the original TTSP remains one of the great understated acting performances of all time. Remaking a classic, particularly one rooted in the, these days, archaic world of the Cold War, is always a risk, but this sounds an enticing project, especially since it’s directed by Let The Right One In man TOMAS ALFREDSON. A staggering line-up has GARY OLDMAN taking on the Smiley role, with JOHN HURT as “Control” and appearances from COLIN FIRTH, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, MARK STRONG, TOBY JONES, STEPHEN GRAHAM and more. The strongest cast list of the year? Quite possibly, and early reports suggest they more than live up

FILMS @ IG:LU WEDNESDAY is film day at IG:LU in September with a season of documentaries all about the CREATIVE ARTS. Kicking off on Wed 14 Sep with HELVETICA, a film about fonts that’s rather more gripping than that might sound. It’s followed by THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE on Wed 21, a fascinating glimpse into the world of Anna Wintour and Vogue as they prepare for the eponymous edition. Finally on Wed 28 it’s CZECH DREAM, an extraordinary piece of work wherein two young documentary filmmakers set out to explore the psychological powers of consumerism by creating an ad campaign for a super store that doesn’t exist. Screenings for all the films take place at 9pm. See theig.lu for more details.

OCTOBER FILMS @ Eden Court A LONELY PLACE TO DIE - Local setting for what looks like becoming a bit of a cult classic. A group of five mountaineers are hiking and climbing in the Highlands when they discover a young Serbian girl buried in a small chamber in the wilderness. They become caught up in a terrifying game of cat and mouse with her kidnappers as they try to get the girl to safety. Directed by JULIAN GILBEY. With MELISSA GEORGE, ED SPELEERS, EAMONN WALKER and SEAN HARRIS. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS - A romantic comedy about a family traveling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN - Following on from 2007’s acclaimed Elite Squad, this sequel returns to the murky world of the

BOPE, Rio de Janeiro’s famed and feared military police battalion

DRIVE - A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers a contract out on him after a heist gone wrong.

MANN: CLUBBING Miami, Fri 30 Sep SEE OUR EXCLUSIVE MANN INTERVIEW ON P50 !!!

SPECIALS SPORT

How many of Snoop Dogg’s bezzie mates have come to Inverness to perform lately? About as many as we’ve had dry outdoor gigs this summer! But that’s about to change as chart-botherer and cover star MANN is being brought up in an exclusive deal with new club MIAMI. His current single ‘The Mack’ feats Snoop and lyaz, his previous ‘Buzzin’’ featured 50 Cent - and he’s aiming high with his forthcoming lp, the forgiveably titled ‘Mann’s World’... It’s an easy name to remember - but so’s his real one - and this might just be the unusualist rapper real name out there - DIJON THAMES SHARIFF to his mates... Anyway, with clubnights elsewhere featuring CHASE & STATUS and DJ YODA, seems Inverness is re-gaining its clubbing diversity...

CLUBBING

Duncan Beiny aka DJ YODA is no ordinary scratch DJ. His seminal How To Cut & Paste series showcased a tongue-incheek mixing style that prompted Q Magazine to declare him “one of the ten DJs to see before you die”, whilst Hip Hop Connection voted him “one of the top three DJs in the world”. Trail-blazing into the world of the audio-visual, DJ Yoda has been instrumental in developing the art form by mixing visuals live on top of his DJ sets. Drawing from sources as diverse as classic movies, obscure television shows, or viral YouTube clips, you can find him cutting up the Indiana Jones theme tune to full on dubstep, or dicing and splicing the Muppet Theme with 1930’s swing. In a world where technology has made the role of the conventional DJ virtually redundant, to the extent that a ten year old child with the right equipment really could do the job of a superstar DJ, the future lies in visionaries like Yoda. We genuinely don’t know what to expect and that’s truly thrilling. www.ironworksvenue.com

LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS: ep launch IG:LU, Fri 16 Sep, 9pm ROCK FATHERSON: plus Stuart Nelson IG:LU, Sun 18 Sep, 11pm Two not-to-be-missed gigs at Inverness’ peculiarest venue. Kilmarnock - so much to answer for. Not content with spawning the awesome rock gods, Biffy Clyro, the creative seed that fills the Killie air has produced another belter in FATHERSON – soon to be yet another of the new breed of Scot-rock bands [Twin Atlantic, Frightened Rabbit, We Were Promised Jetpacks, et al] chappin’ on the door of the big time. This is a going to be an incredible gig - YOU WILL NEVER SEE THEM IN A MORE INTIMATE VENUE AGAIN as bigger things beckon and fast. Not heard them yet? Check out www.fatherson.co.uk - you’ll see their latest video. Excellent. Powerful, tender, melodic, burning, yearning, ouch. PLUS! - an exclusive acoustic set from He Slept On 57’s STUART NELSON! Late start means a) you can get along after Jon Fratelli @ Ironworks and b) somewhere actually open past 12 on a Sunday! (£3 donation) Two days prior to Fatherson, local grindmeisters, LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS have a VERY SPECIAL SHOW for you. A gig of 2 halves to launch their debut e.p. Each half will have a very different look, sound and feel. We can reveal no more just yet, but I’ve seen the plans - and it really is going to be spectacular. Filthy junk-rock grit-clogged guitar riffs back Steve Obern’s gravelliest growl yet – a band just about ready to completely believe in themselves - and you know how things can go when THAT happens! Be there to see it.

The festival runs until 17 Sep and comes to a suitably stirring climax on that date with shinty in Bught Park in the afternoon (The Camanachd Cup Final) followed by the BLAS GRAND FINALE in the evening at Eden Court featuring DAIMH, MANRAN, CHERISH THE LADIES and more. Another eagerly awaited event (and quite possibly traditional music highlight of the year) is THE VOICE at Eden Court on Thu 15 Sep, featuring vocal royalty in the form of KAREN MATHESON and her band, KATHLEEN MACINNES, ANNIE GRACE, KARINE POLWART and CORRINA HEWAT, and young Gaelic singing sensation CANNTAIREACHD led by EILIDH MACKENZIE, Scottish Trad Awards Gaelic Singer Of The Year. St Andrews Cathedral plays host on Fri 16 to a musical celebration of the poetry of Sorley Maclean, inspired by his intense and visionary poem about HALLAIG, one of the cleared townships on Raasay. Another event demonstrating the myriad starting points for dynamic events at the festival. For full details see:

Seasons Foyers Foundation. The church was completed in 1904 and is a stunning example of craftsmanship perfectly suitable for music performances. According to MacGregor, “...it has a stunning acoustic which will suit classical or traditional music performances very well. The people behind The Four Seasons Foundation want to develop a link between European visitors and businesses who want a truly memorable cultural experience and asked me to put together the first performances there for them.” The evening starts at Bogbain Farm where a luxury Highland Banquet will be served with a complimentary drink, followed by return transport to the Church in Foyers. The first half of the show will be a 30 minute classical look at the work of MARJORY KENNEDY FRASER, a Gaelic song collector who published the ‘Songs of the Hebrides’ which included the ‘Eriskay Love Lilt’. DR ANDREW DUNLOP, originally from Argyll but who now lives in New York, is a classical pianist who will lead the classical work alongside Gaelic singer JOY DUNLOP, as well as an opera singer and strings maestro, PATSY REID. The second half of the show features tracks from Bruce’s new album, “Kissin’ Is The Best Of A’” and the stellar line up includes CHRISTINE HANSON, BRIAN MCALPINE and MATHIEU WATSON. The album was recorded in 3 days around 4 microphones earlier this year in Morayshire and is a collection of tunes that Bruce and Christine have enjoyed playing over the years. Tickets are £30, which includes dinner, transport and the concert. As the church is small, ticket numbers are limited and booking is essential. Please contact info@bogbainfarm.com or 01463 772800 to book.

One of the finest Gaelic singers around who finds herself embarking on a new stage in her career. Having recently presented TV coverage from The Celtic Connections 2011 - she has also toured as part of the - world famous - Transatlantic Sessions across the UK and Europe. In between full-time mothering duties, and studying for her finals, (MA in Material Culture & The Environment no less!), she’s also guested on Songs Of Praise, presented radio shows for BBC Radio Scotland, and much more. She’s even produced a new musical work “HEISGEIR” for the Blas Festival. Reminding us of the exquisite sound she makes, the most important thing of all, as this gig will undoubtedly demonstrate. CAMANACHD CUP FINAL: Bught Park, Sat 17 Sep, 2.30pm

THEATRE

In an ideal world this, surely the most beautifully located marathon in Britain, would be televised live (on BBC Alba at least), but since that’s unlikely to happen, you should just get along to it, either to participate or support those taking part. While the marathon itself is already closed to entries and expecting to attract heaps of runners from all over the world, there’s still time to enter the 5K FUN RUN. Starting in Bught Park, the 5K route loops around the park before crossing over ‘the Islands’ of the River Ness, then along Ness Bank beneath Inverness Castle. In the heart of Inverness, runners turn left across Ness Bridge, then left again into Ness Walk to approach the finish in a stunning location by the river at Bught Park. The fun carries on after the 5K with a fantastic programme of entertainment in the festival village for all family and friends. Live music, the Baxters Food & Drink Fayre, a sports expo and activities for kids, means there is a lot to do for runners and companions of all ages. Open to people of all ages and abilities including wheelchair entrants, everyone completing the course receives a commemorative medal, a t-shirt and a goody bag. The WEE NESSIE, a new event last year, offers pre-school age children their own monster walk, run or jogging race with a parent or carer around a short circuit in Bught Park. [ Schools, clubs and disability groups entering teams for the 5K Fun Run will receive reduced entry fees – all team entries must be received by 12 September. ] For further information about entering a team, please email info@ lochnessmarathon.com. the Moray Firth to greet you at the finish line. There are two distances for you to choose from, Novice and Sprint. Just trying triathlon for the first time? Then the Novice race is perfect. The race will start with 16 lengths of the 25m pool; take you out on a ride of just over 11km, following country roads west of the town then a flat 3 km run along the beach front. Aimed at beginners to multi-sport, the gentle course and short distances can be taken at your own pace, with even breast-stroke and walking allowed! And, as this race is about participation and individual challenges there will be “random prizes for finishers” We presume that means finishers plucked at random for reward, not prizes being garden sheds, trombones and similarly random swag. Wanting to push yourself that extra mile? The “Sprint” distance is sure to challenge your competitive side. A 750m pool swim, 23km ride and 5km run across a flat course should have you clocking good times. There will be prizes for fastest times in each age-group, Junior (16-19 years), Senior (20-39 years), Veteran (40-59 years) and Vintage (60+ years). triathloninverness.co.uk

FILM

Subtitled “A Voyage Round The Stories Of Neil Munro”, this coproduction with Highland theatre company Open Book is a 21st century take on the tales that have entertained for a hundred years. The eponymous captain PARA HANDY takes his boat The Vital Spark from a Clydeside breaker’s yard to the misty lochs of our very own Highlands, accompanied by his mate Dougie, engineer MacPhail and cabin-boy Sunny Jim, with hilarious adventures ensuing all over the place. The cast is led by Inverness’ JIMMY CHISHOLM and there’s a foot-tapping live score too. It promises to ensure a special place for the characters in the hearts of a whole new generation. eden-court.co.uk

REGINALD D HUNTER: Eden Court Empire, Sat 01 Oct

SPORT

A regular on TV shows, but you have to see Hunter live to fully appreciate his incisive comedic skills. Originally from Albany, Georgia, his infectious Southern drawl suits his relaxed delivery (“y’all...”) which in turn perhaps assists his tackling ‘taboo’ topics - such as reclaiming the word ‘Nigga’ and asking difficult questions like, recently, whether women just aren’t as naturally funny as men! You may find yourself disagreeing with his conclusions as often as you cheer him to the skies, but there’s no doubting the elegant comedic structures underpinning his arguments. One of the few comics around prepared to play with risky unpredictability. Recommended.

Based on Barry Hines’ A Kestrel for a Knave and perhaps better known as a film, this stage production adapted by Rob Evans tells the story of young Billy Caspar, bullied at home and school who finds happiness in the form of a kestrel, Kes, who becomes his best, his only friend. It’s an emotional rollercoaster of a story and you can pretty much guarantee there won’t be a dry eye in the house by the end.

ever more undeniable. There s certainly no one around these days with the scope, versatility and downright joy that Guinness engendered, only Michael Sheen perhaps coming close. Fortunately he got recognised in his lifetime with a host of Olivier, Tony and BAFTA and Academy awards and films like the magnificent Kind Hearts and Coronets and Bridge On The River Kwai have ensured onscreen immortality. You might not know much about the man himself though and this acclaimed play by Mark Burgess digs a little deeper, with Trevor Littledale playing Guinness and reflecting on acting, faith, family and his shattering insecurity, played to a background of the golden days of British film and theatre. Sounds rather glorious. www.eden-court.co.uk

PLAYPIECES: SHORELINE @ Ironworks, Sat 01 Oct, 1pm

Let s hope the Play Pieces season returns to Ironworks next year, because the idea of lunchtime theatre, with pie and pint seems to have attracted an enthusiastic audience and provided a welcome outlet for new writing and performing. Performed by Emma Claire Brightlyn, written by Mairead Martin and directed by Marcus Roche, Shoreline - based on true events - is the story about a girl s search to become closer to her grandfather by finding the boat that only he remembers. Along the way she discovers the tapestry of her family history, the epic journey of the Byoris and what her grandfather s stories truly mean to her. By combining dance, projection and Traditional Scottish and Nova Scotian music, this inventively staged piece of dance theatre continues to demonstrate the wealth of varied talent emerging in Scottish theatre.

I recently saw advertised an “ergonomically shaped” shoe horn, which implies that there must exist shoe horns that aren’t shaped to fit the human heel otherwise they’d just have called it a “shoe horn”. Wouldn’t they? Or were they trying to fool us into buying their shoe horn by bamboozling us with big show-offy words like ergonomic... maybe I’m trying to show off now by using that self same word to make my point about them. ken kelman ‘unknown object in the bagging area’ - they often get very upset about that. I propose a bit of artificial intelligence be built in to them, to enhance your checkout experience. The simple addition of a camera, microphone and some speech and pattern recognition software could make a world of difference. As usual you’re scanning your purchases and the check out Is telling you after each and every one to ‘please place the object in the bagging area’ also as usual you mutter under you breath ‘yes yes I’m doing that no need to tell me after every tin of spaghetti‘ (only with more cuss words). At this point the check out surprises you; ‘that’s a nice tie’ you hear it say ‘is it new?’. ‘Yes, my mum gave me it for my birthday’ you reply. ‘Well your mum certainly knows how to pick a tie, it’s a great match for your shirt’ responds the checkout. ‘Thank you, I’ll tell her you said so’. Of course by now you’ve been dithering for about a minute with that tin of spaghetti in your hand but when the checkout pipes-up ‘please put the object... ‘– in the bagging area, I know’ you finish its sentence and find yourself thinking that ‘hey, we’re getting on quite well here’. And so the transaction continues with little comments about the weather (the checkout having access to metoffice.gov.uk can make

the usual banalities about tomorrow supposed to be being nicer, it’s far wetter in Aberdeen, what about those floods in Cornwall etc. etc.) until it’s time to pay up and leave. You do this only reluctantly because you have been getting on rather well, all in all for the first time in a long time buying groceries has been quite fun and you’re reluctant for it to end. You slowly take your card and your receipt and when prompted you ‘remove your purchases from the bagging area’ and start to walk away .. promising yourself you won’t look back. Then you hear that voice again ‘excuse me’...’yes?’ you say as you turn round, your heart starting to beat that little bit faster... ‘don’t forget your keys - you left them on my weighing machine’ - because my new super friendly checkout will be able to do things like that; it’ll know if you’ve forgotten your gloves or omitted to pick up your change. It won’t however be capable of asking you out on a date, and as you quickly realise that, you hurry away feeling slightly embarrassed by the whole affair. Addendum: Why are self-service checkouts always female? Or perhaps more correctly, why have I never encountered one with a male voice? It’s possible that the simple answer to this is I’ve not been to enough supermarkets, but I suspect that there are no male selfKEN service checkouts anywhere.

EATING OUT Kool Runnings

14 Church St, Inverness 01463 230856

“Dude!!! Kool Runnings!!! Check it out!!!” The American tourists dragging their suitcases down Church Street stop in their tracks outside Kool Runnings and react to one of the newest additions to the Inverness dining scene with the kind of hyperventilated excitement that makes their nation what it is today. Whether it’s the fact that the place name checks the greatest Olympic movie ever made (wherein John Candy will have you blubbing like a baby) or just the unlikeliness of a Northern Scottish city offering a little taste of Jamaica, it’s certainly got them excited and, after the obligatory photo shoot in front of the place they loudly vow to return to check out the food. It’s something we’ve been vowing to do for a while, ever since its inception a few months back, particularly as it’s half a heartbeat from the ICA offices. When it

first opened, right in the heart of the city’s self-proclaimed artistic quarter it seemed, though hugely welcome, just about the least likely cuisine you’d ever expect to get in the Highlands. And, indeed, after the closure of an Edinburgh Caribbean joint, it’s currently the only place to get Jamaican food in the whole of Scotland. And it’s in Inverness. Who’d have thunk it? It’s still finding its feet, with a menu that also offers such hardly Jamaican delights as lasagne, nachos and Chicken Kiev, but the excellent decision to put a couple of tables with umbrellas outside and an ever-developing decor that does a fine job of approximating a picture postcard Montego Bay beach bar is ensuring its growing popularity. And allowing chef Glenroy Glaze, a man with perhaps the best name of any cook in the world ever, to show this part of the world just what great food his

native country has to offer. Having lived in Brixton it’s impressive to see that the menu contains many of the dishes you can get there and even some you can’t, though perhaps it would be good for the posters in the windows to make more of that. Perhaps that’ll change as Glenroy gets more confident about there being a definite demand for Jamaican cuisine. Certainly once people have tasted it (the Sunday buffet with a whole host of dishes being a great place to start), there should be little doubt they’ll be back for more, particularly since pricing seems to have been properly thought through at last, making it far more affordable than when it first opened. We went on a rare sunny lunchtime, enhancing the Jamaican vibe of the interior, complete with pictures of Marley, Garvey and Bolt and some nice >> 43

>> reggae (as opposed to the Rod Stewart and Abba that inexplicably sometimes get an outing). While the place isn’t licenced, a couple of glasses of Jamaican ginger beer from the welcoming, friendly waitress went some way to transporting us to Montego Bay. From an extensive and enticing menu (which is even bigger in the evening) I started with Steam Shell Bowl, a selection of steamed shellfish that included mussels, langoustines and even oysters. While not perhaps of completely tip top quality, they were nice enough and at £6.95, great value, though a bit of bread to mop up the juices wouldn’t have gone amiss. My companion had what is virtually a Jamaican national dish, Ackee and Saltfish, the latter billed here as codfish. Ackee is a curious vegetable that looks like scrambled egg, but goes brilliantly with the fish, especially when accompanied here by fried plantain. The whole dish is a wonderfully balanced mixture of sweet and salty and a new taste sensation well worth trying. For my main, despite the wealth of selections on offer, there was only one way I was ever going and that was to recapture Proustian memories of Curry Goat, Rice and Peas, a glorious dish that I’d rather presumed I’d never get to eat again after leaving Brixton. Sometimes it’s made with lamb, but this was the real thing, the goat tender and literally falling off the bone, the whole packed with spicy flavour and something I’d gladly eat at least once a week for the rest of my days. As good as the South London version? Better. My companion had another Jamaican classic, Jerk Chicken and again it didn’t disappoint. Perfectly cooked and deliciously

moist, it had an authentic spiciness and not a trace of the ubiquitous Reggae Reggae Sauce that a lesser chef might have been tempted to rely on. This was the real thing, accompanied by great sweet potatoes and a fresh salad. Jamaican food is more about flavour than presentation so it’s only really on the desserts that the chef gets to show off a bit of aesthetic artistry and that was certainly the case with our choices. My Coconut Crème Brûlée was nicely presented in a little coffee cup with an accompanying spoon of gorgeous raspberry sorbet, some spun sugar shenanigans and, oddly, what appeared to be a Ginger Nut, as well as the obligatory Cape Gooseberry, a fruit that never fails to be completely pointless. My companion’s Jamaican Rum Baba was equally impressive, both in looks and taste. That nation’s take on a sticky toffee pudding, sweet and sticky with moreish rum and raisin ice cream. About now it would have been lovely to have wandered down to the beach for the afternoon, but sadly the spirit of Jamaica engendered by Kool Runnings only stretches so far. Still, it’s a welcome little haven of sunshine no matter the weather outside. Well worth checking out. W

allpaper has taken on a whole new lease of life in recent years thanks to the popularity of the ‘feature wall’.

Far from the gaudy florals and daunting stripes that oppressed many’s a front room in the past, these days credible artists are getting involved in the designing of feature walls for your house.

Welcome back to Wallpaper ...With A Difference!

People feel they can make braver choices when they are only covering one wall in the room – and now forward thinkers like Black Crowe Studios have collected together artists such as KARLA DAVISON, whose bold watercolours create a striking pose in any room and photographic artist ALYSIA COTTER who can literally transform your room into a Parisian park or have you sitting by a canal in Venice (see pic). So rather than simply hanging a piece of art on top of some seen-itbefore wallpaper, why not have the wall become the art?

n You must be “Buzzin” (no pun intended) having smashed the UK with your first single Buzzin? Followed by The Mack, both tracks feature classic samples - Nu Shooz and Mark Morrison - is this something close to your roots - what have been your influences? I am influenced by great songs that feel good. On the Mann’s World album, I wanted to create a great pop hip hop album that stayed true to who I am. We decided to keep a west coast influence as well because I that’s where I’m from. Me and JR really wanted to bring the listener back to when music was about feeling good. n Having already worked with 50 CENT, JASON DERULO and your boys SNOOP and Iyaz... have you more top collaborations or have you some solo moments on the forthcoming material?? We have a couple more features on this project that I’m excited about. T PAIN is on the album on the song Get It Girl, which is crazy. I also feature a new Artist from la named TY$ who is a on a fan favourite Reminice. But I also have a couple great solo songs. n The Highlands is alive in anticipation of your appearance at Miami Nightclub Inverness in September. Have you ever toured the UK and if not what do you look forward to the most?? Yeah, I have toured the UK before and I love it out there. The energy is awesome , as well as the surroundings. I love the art and vibe of the country.

BOTOX®: Holding Back The Years Muscle-relaxing injection treatment (BOTOX®) is becoming more popular all the time - with many people claiming improved confidence and self-esteem from this non-surgical procedure. Every time we laugh, smile or frown, ‘dynamic wrinkles’ are created by contractions of the delicate facial muscles. After time these repeated contractions leave what we know as crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead lines. Botox® can soften the appearance of these lines and wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles.

A series of targeted injections deliver results in 3 to 7 days which typically last 3 to 4 months. Having regular injections as soon as the muscles start to regain activity, causes them to gradually shrink in size which can result in longer intervals between treatments. In London there is a current trend - coined as ‘Protox’ - for competitive professionals to use Botox® to gain an extra edge to help close that deal or win that promotion. Whilst increasingly expensive creams claim carefully worded results, many Botox® users talk of rapid, dramatic results. It can certainly be a less expensive and less invasive option than cosmetic surgery. As with all cosmetic procedures, it is important to seek treatment from qualified professionals who use genuine, quality products. Holding back the years and looking great has never been easier! n Graduates are being offered exciting opportunities to expand their business experience through paid placements with local firms across the Highlands and Islands. The programme gives recent graduates the opportunity to work with businesses and social enterprises, leading on innovative projects in marketing, product and business development, engineering and IT while gaining experience to progress their future careers.

Currently 42 graduates are working as part of the programme across the Highlands and Islands with another 20 organisations looking to offer placement opportunities. In total, 130 placements will be available until 2013.

The placements are part of the TalentScotland Graduate Placement Programme which is run across Scotland and supported across the Highlands and Islands by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and the European Regional Development Fund.

Lara Pollard, Business Engagement Manager from HIE, commented: “Many graduates would like to return to the Highlands and Islands, but some believe that there are few opportunities to take up graduate level jobs. Through this programme, this is possible. Many of the companies looking for graduates are leaders in their field and can provide experience that many graduates would otherwise not be able to gain straight after leaving Higher Education. This is an excellent opportunity to build on the skills and knowledge gained through education and apply them directly to an industry.”

Organisations from a range of sectors including food and drink, creative industries, and energy are amongst those offering posts which will provide valuable experience to graduates and support their own business development. Placements offer a minimum salary of £15,500 pro rata. The graduates also benefit from support from a team within HIE and receive training focused on innovation, employability and business skills as part of a five day residential course.

DRUIM BA WINDFARM: SAY NO TO GIANT TURBINES 23 of the tallest turbines in Scotland will LOOM OVER

KILTARLITY – GLENCONVINTH – ABRIACHAN ancient communities......................modern homes

and IMPACT on the: A833 – touring buses, cars and cyclists, travelling between Loch Ness and the north Abriachan Forest Trust – outstanding community enterprise with over 30K visitors every year Great Glen Way – cyclists and walkers travelling one of Scotland’s four core footpaths Holiday accommodation – cottages, chalet parks, B & Bs - 5 minutes drive from Loch Ness.

this BLIMP was flown at the precise height [ 149.5m/~500ft ] the wind turbines at Druim Ba will be. See how it dwarfs even the trees. C-R-A-Z-Y !!! *

not in the distant hills......................just a kilometre or two away. IS THIS WHAT WE WANT FOR OUR TOURISTS? WILL THEY RETURN?

Hundreds of houses and businesses will have views of these towering structures - some homes will be so close they will be entirely ‘DWARFED’ & ‘DOMINATED’ by them (Scottish Natural Heritage’s words).

44 HOMES will be WITHIN 2 KILOMETRES. So much for generations of hard work!

And the jury is still out on the NOISE from such high turbines - some countries have called for fresh research, and greater separation distances to protect residents. IS THIS WHAT WE WANT TO HAND ON TO OUR CHILDREN? WILL THEY THANK US? Druim Ba would set a precedent for a windfarm in the Inverness and Loch Ness area*: *with such tall turbines, so close to homes, farms and crofts

IS THIS WHAT WE WANT? The proposal to build this wind farm at Druim Ba, between Kiltarlity & Abriachan comes before Inverness area planning committee on September 20th. Local residents feel their interests, and those of the entire Inverness area should come before those of a LARGE MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANY. Please let your local councillor know your views.

Please join local people in SAYING NO to Druim Ba

This message has been submitted to ICA by a concerned resident in the affected areas. We thought it worth publishing.

* image from druimba-sayno.com

Editor’s note: I think it is worth, for the avoidance of doubt, clarifying that to be against the proposed wind farm at Druim Ba is NOT the same as to be against windfarms as a whole. Many people opposed are staunch clean energy supporters - but not at any cost. What appears to be happening here is that well-intentioned legislation is offering subsidy to encourage businesses and communities to set up windfarms. And everyone knows that some businesses hear ‘subsidy’ and think ‘free money’, or ‘low-risk investment’. But no-one seems to have thought about the desirability or otherwise of big business buying up land where communities thrive and ‘industrialising’ them in whatever way suits their profit. They are not accountable to the local community. However, the council members who vote on this are accountable. Not just for making the choice but for all that happens as a result of their decision. Of course there is always a balance to be struck – but this proposal seems to be bad business for all but the money behind it. This is like screwing a coat hook into the Mona Lisa - yes, it has a practical function, but look what you just did to the priceless beauty. Are we that stupid? Really? Over to you, planning committee...
