Foreword Forewor d u What about RockNess then? The best one yet, we reckon, and the perfect start-complete with traditional downpour- for a summer of fun in Inverness. You can see some pictures from it in this issue, but don’t go thinking that’s all on offer, no siree… A typically packed month finds entertainment for fans of very nearly everything imaginable. Kids are going to be loving JAMES & THE GIANT PEACH, THE GRUFFALO and ZENWING PUPPETS, while those of a slightly older generation will be out in force for gigs by our cover stars TONY CHRISTIE and ROD STEWART. The Yoof will, we hope, be throwing their hats in the air to THE VIEW (playing a very special warm up for TITP), UNICORN KID, SHUTTER’s spectacular album launch and a NEW SOUL CITY SPECIAL with CRAIG CHARLES; marvelling at the physical theatre of DECKY DOES A BRONCO and watching the thrills and spills of SOAPBOX EXTREME. On top of all that, there’s a barbecue at Maple Court in aid of the very worthwhile LET ME STAY campaign, the return of INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES to its spiritual home Park, the community spirit of the ARTS IN at Northern Meeting Park MERKINCH FESTIVAL and top comedy in the form of soon-to-be-OneShow presenter JASON MANFORD. Theatre is, as always, terrifically diverse, ranging from ROMEO & JULIET, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and HMS PINAFORE to a one man show about the satanic ALAISDAR CROWLEY and a comic take on Highland culture in JACOBITE COUNTRY. COUNTRY Somewhere in all that we’re still trying to find time to watch Scotland at the World Cup (doing well we trust) and Andy Murray at Wimbledon. Summer at last and we’re loving it.. it. More inside as usual - and at:

ARTS IN MERKINCH @ The Bike Shed, Merkinch, Fri 02-Fri 16 Jul

W

e’ve always loved this, the most local of festivals in town, which has done more than anything else to change daft preconceptions about Merkinch and show it to be a hive of creativity and community spirit. This year they’ve got the Bike Shed as a permanent

venue and they’ll be selling all sorts of affordable art to ensure the place can keep on serving the people of the area. One of the highlights of the festival looks like being the Casualty Stage Makeup Workshop on Fri 16 aimed at teenagers and run by a make-up artist Tinuviel Shaw visiting from Glasgow. On Sat 10th the Bike Shed is open all day for a drop in, where people of all ages can cut and design their own tumblers made from recycled glass, led by ceramic artist Allison Weightman. People can just drop past anytime between 10am and 4pm and take part. For more details of the festival, go to www.thebikeshed.info

ART SOCIETY OF INVERNESS EXHIBITION @ Eastgate Centre, Mon 12-Wed 21 Jul Of course, this art malarkey isn’t all video instillations and conceptual interventions; sometimes it’s just about good paintings. And nowhere will you find this embraced more enthusiastically than at the 66th Annual Exhibition of the Art Society of Inverness. Work by amateurs and better-known artists alike will be exhibited, so among the 200 paintings on show you’ll be able to see stuff by the likes of Clare Blois, Fiona Matheson, Isabell Dickson and Margaret Cowie. Even better, it’s in the Eastgate so you can check it out while you’re shopping. Don’t miss it.

ART AROUND THE FIRTH Sat 24-Sat 31 Jul As part of Highlands Open Studios 2010 “Art Around the Firth” is an easy art trail around the scenic Beauly Firth, featuring two artists’ studios (Avril Marr and Frances Baxter) and two major galleries (Beauly Gallery and Tore Art Gallery), where artists will be working during the week. For details see www.highlandsopenstudios.co.uk

Thomson & Craighead to 25 July Sometimes this modern art malarkey spends far too much time burrowing up its own fundament, but when it hits on a truly great idea it proves irresistible. Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead play around with your perceptions via some time-related pieces, the most intriguing of which is a complete rendition of the 1960’s film version of HG Wells’s novella Time Machine, re-edited by the artists in its entirety into alphabetical order. This re-working imposes a formalistic time travel on the original movie and presents it back as a more esoteric and rhythmic narrative assemblage. Clever. h-i-c-a.org

EDEN COURT The mercury is rising across the Highlands and the streets will soon begin to fill with the unmistakable noise of the school summer holidays, so here at Eden Court we’ve got at least two distractions of blockbuster proportions to keep all the mini–me’s in your life happy. We can’t wait for the arrival of the wonderful Woody in Toy Story 3 (19 Jul – 12 Aug) and everyone’s favourite Ogre in Shrek Forever After (01 – 18 Jul) We actually had a rather strange Shrek experience earlier today when, as Jeni and I struggled through Eden Court carrying a gigantic Shrek display, one of our cleaning ladies commented on what a handsome chap Shrek is. I mean, sure, he’s a nice guy, but handsome? As if that wasn’t disturbing enough, we couldn’t quite believe our ears when she then added, “Hmm, he reminds me of my brother”.....well, I suppose we are in the Highlands after all! KIDS & FAMILIES > THEATRE JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH @ Brodie Castle, Thu 01 Jul, 6.30pm

KIDS

W

hile Illyria are best known for their Shakespearean productions, they also put on Children’s Outdoor Theatre and this could be one of the best. Roald Dahl’s classic tale is adapted by David Wood and finds the James of the title spilling a bag of the strongest

magic of the world next to a peach tree, unleashing all manner of jiggery pokery. There’s plenty of opportunity for audience participation and even a big piece of fruit, plus, of course, a tremendous yarn. Don’t miss it.

THE GRUFFALO @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 08 Jul, 1.30pm Just about every young child in the world who’s heard the story of The Gruffalo seems to fall instantly in love with it. This despite (or perhaps because) it’s a slither of a story, packed with scary details. And here are a couple of chances for fans to further immerse themselves in the tale. First off a walk in the “deep, dark woods” where you can imagine the adventure being set, most suitable for families with children under eight. The path is suitable for prams and buggies with big wheels only. More details on 01479 873 914. If that’s fuelled your enthusiasm, then you can pop along to Eden Court the next day for a full-scale musical adaptation. A holiday treat.

BOOGIE PETE LIVE @ Eden Court Empire, Fri 16 Jul, 5.30pm Pete Hillier from Boogie Beebies brings the TV show to the stage where we’re promised “moves, magic and silliness” and even a chance to meet him and get his autograph afterwards. Something to treasure for the rest of your life, obviously.

TRAVELLERS FOLLIES @ Spectrum Centre, Sat 24 Jul, 2pm In our experience, anything put on by the marvellous Zenwing Puppets Company is well worth checking out and this looks like being no exception. They bring their enchanting talents to bear on a story about a travelling magician, a world-touring diva and a clumsy hotel porter, all set to a tango soundtrack. What’s not to love?

MUSIC

SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 08 Jul

S

cottish Chamber Orchestra will come to Strathpeffer Pavillion and perform numerous classical works. Conducted by the noted violinist Alexander Janizcek, they will perform numerous works of great significance. Firstly, they will play Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Prometheus ballet. This is one of Beethoven’s greatest and most intricate works demonstrating his love of classical culture. It is founded on the tale of the Titan Prometheus, who gifted fire to humans and was tormented by an eagle as punishment. With many of the themes of optimism and humanism that resonate through Beethoven’s career and music, this is a masterpiece of composition. This is followed by Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Violin Concerto. Hartman is seen as one of the greatest 20th Century composers but has been largely neglected in modern Britain. This performance provides a valuable opportunity to discover the works of this enigmatic composer. Lastly, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony closes the concert. This is an astounding work and a fitting end to the concert.

THE ROYAL STRING QUARTET @ Nairn Community Centre, Sat 10 Jul The Royal String Quartet is to play at Nairn Community Centre. This was selected by the Royal Philharmonic Society as one of the most outstanding chamber music groups. Having won multiple awards, their visit to Nairn should provide a great opportunity to appreciate their talents. Their concert consists of works by Mozart (they have frequently starred at the Mozart Festival in Poland) and Shostakovich. Nairn provides a wonderful setting for the concert.

EDINBURGH YOUTH ORCHESTRA @ Eden Court, Sat 31 Jul Lastly Edinburgh Youth Orchestra comes to Inverness. This group showcases many of the most gifted young musicians in our country and have collaborated with Nicola Benedetti and Julian Lloyd Webber. Garry Marshall conducts and the acclaimed soprano Lisa Milne provides vocal accompaniment. The concert is preceded by a talk.

UNICORN KID/LED @ Oscars, Dingwall, Sat 03 Jul A fine double bill for fans of Electropop and the 8-bit scene. And both acts demonstrating just how important the internet has become as a vehicle for dissemination and publicity. Leith’s Oliver Sabin has been making music for the past three years in his bedroom, ever since he was fifteen, but it was thanks to support from the influential Popjustice website that he was approached to remix Pet Shop Boys’ “Did You See Me Coming?” single. Having already released chiptune mini-classics like Lion Hat and Wee Monsters it’s brought him to wider attention, to the extent that he most recently wove his magic on Gorillaz’ “Superfast Jellyfish” and found Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears publically courting his friendship on Twitter. Collaborations on that front would seem inevitable and we’re looking forward to see how the sonic montage of hard dance, bleeps and influences as diverse as Bollywood and Scottish reels develops. Tonight should provide some clues. Stuart Moffat is very much a kindred spirit to Sabin, proclaiming his love for Electropop through Theatre Fall and DJ incarnation Look Mum It’s The DJs. His new LED project finds him getting together with Audiolife DJ Darren Malley, producing their own music and remixing the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Weezer and Gorillaz. You may have caught them at Rockness sporting the light suits from which they get their name (and which were also in evidence at the ICA awards being rocked by another bunch of sartorial explorers) and if you want a sneaky preview of what to expect, you can see the Chilli Peppers remix on You Tube at http://tinyurl.com/32qbg9h

MUSIC > Soul, Jungle, Techno & more... JAPANESE POPSTARS / ALTERN8 @ Ironworks, Sat 12 Dec, 10pm ironworks-venue.com

NEW SOUL CITY LIVE WITH CRAIG CHARLES @ Ironworks, Sat 24 Jul Though probably best known for his appearances on TV in Red Dwarf and Corrie, Craig Charles is at heart a soul music fan, as anyone who’s caught his Saturday night radio show on 6 Music will have discovered. This writer recalls Charles’ early days as a performance poet in Liverpool on the fringes of the Teardrop Explodes/ Bunnymen scene, but perhaps it’s the city’s soul tradition that spawned the likes of The Real Thing which has proved to be more enduringly resonant in his musical leanings. What shines through most of all is his boundless enthusiasm, meaning that this should be an ebullient evening, particularly with live music from the ace Leonard Jones Potential and a warm up DJ set from Mr. New Soul City Donald McColl.

TURBULENCE! @ Hoots Bothy, Sat 30 Jul Continuing the refreshing move towards musical diversity on the local clubbing scene, here’s a night of drum’n’bass, dubstep and Jungle courtesy of DJs Raboon, Dropz and Silent Assassin. Guest DJs Steve Dell and Monty P complete the line-up for the self-proclaimed “filth fix”. Good stuff.

TARTAN HEART FRINGE BBQ @ Maple Court Hotel, Sun 31 Jul The annual fringe BBQ is always great fun and this year it’s in aid of an excellent cause, the Let Me Stay Campaign, which you can read more about on page 33. As well as chowing down on freshly cooked food and raising money you’ll also be able to see live bands from 2-5.30pm, followed by Scott Langley and the Deviation DJs from 5.30-8.30pm.

SPIERS & BODEN/SALTFISHFORTY TUNE UP TOUR (PICTURED) @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 07 Jul Two of the hottest and most sought after acts on the Scottish folk circuit join together to present an evening of punchy toe-tappers. Described by one eminent critic as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, Spiers and Boden have made the genre very much their own stomping ground, with a spontaneous, invigorating take on English folk. Hailing from Orkney, Saltfishforty are Douglas Montgomery (fiddle / viola) and Brian Cromarty (guitar / mandola / vocals). Combining the traditional music of their homeland with original composition, the duo released their debut album to much critical acclaim in 2003 and have steadily built their profile and reputation on the circuit in the intervening years.

LOSSIEMOUTH FOLK FESTIVAL @ Beach Bar, Lossiemouth, Fri 16-Sun 18 Jul It may not be the most high profile of events on the festival calendar but this is the 27th year that the town of Lossiemouth has attracted enthusiasts to a weekend of concerts, sessions, workshops, storytelling and singarounds. There are no big names, but an irresistible enthusiasm and celebratory spirit which should make for a fine time. www.lossiefolkclub.co.uk

THE WILDERS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Tue 20 Jul @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Sat 24 Jul

I

t is five years since “the hillbilly hurricane from Kansas City” first arrived in the UK to wow unsuspecting audiences. Since then, they have won a reputation as one of the most highlycharged and entertaining acts on tour and their last visit to Eden Court was a suitably riproaring occasion. Their latest album, Someone’s Got To Pay carried them to the finals of the annual Independent Music Awards in America, and went on to win Alt-Country Album of The Year category so their creative fires are obviously still burning brightly. They’re in the Highlands for a week and what’s the betting they inspire some to eagerly follow them to everywhere they play?

SPEYFEST IN SESSION @ Fochabers Institute, Tue 27-Thu 29 Jul The ‘Speyfest In Session’ events are nightly sessions held at The Fochabers Institute in the run up to the main Speyside 2010 Festival, which runs from 29 Jul-01 Aug. And it’s the first of those In Sessions that we’re particularly looking forward to as it stars Dick Gaughan, just about the most important folk singer Scotland has produced and a vital part of the genre’s cultural history. As for the Speyfest itself, you can expect such luminaries as Michael McGoldrick, Karen Matheson, The Wilders (more about whom you can read elsewhere on this page), Hayseed Dixie, Treacherous Orchestra and Red Hot Chilli Pipers. For more details, got the festival website at www.speyfest.com

SKERRYVORE @ Ironworks, Fri 30 Jul Skerryvore formed in 2004 on the Isle of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides. From traditional roots the band have developed both in size and sound to create a fusion of their traditional music and songs with the urban sounds of rock and funk. When not touring the world, Skerryvore are heavily involved with the charitable organisation Live Music Now (LMN). This collaboration has seen the band participate in performances and workshops within key community environments including The Royal Blind School, Artlink Central, special needs schools throughout the UK and also a highly successful project at HMP Cornton Vale with female young offenders.

ROD STEWART @ Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, Sat 17 Jul

W

e’re pretty sure that after Elton John played here last year and went down so well, he returned to that big house in London where all the pop stars from the sixties and seventies live together and told Rod Stewart that the Caledonian Stadium in Inverness

would be a particularly fine place to perform. Stewart obviously listened to his pal and he’s coming up here to run through his hits and play some stuff from his popular American Songbook series. Hard though it might be to believe now, there was a time when Rod had a certain cheeky edginess, whereas nowadays he seems perfectly content to forego bluesy vocals for singing that serves merely to soundtrack an almost cartoon-like, raffish stage persona. The little jewels will still be there, but for every Killing Of Georgie, Maggie May or I Don’t Want To Talk About It, there’s a Sailing, Do You Think I’m Sexy and self-deprecating gag about keeping up with the missus. Still a heart throb to many, but the cougars have moved on.

TONY CHRISTIE @ Ironworks, Thu 22 Jul Back in the public eye most recently thanks to the whole “Amarillo” thing with Peter Kay, but he’s actually one of the finest entertainers this country has ever produced, maintaining an admirable enthusiasm for working with a whole range of contemporary musicians. In the past few years collaborators have included Jarvis Cocker, Alex Turner and Richard Hawley so hopefully some of the stuff he’s done with them like the sublime “Walk Like A Panther” will get an airing, but we’ll also be cheering for classics like “Avenues & Alleyways” and, obviously, the aforementioned directions to that Texas town.

WESTCOAST @ Eden Court Empire, Fri 23 Jul More music for fans of a certain vintage. This lot are very keen to emphasise that they’re not another tribute act, but “a complete entertainment experience celebrating the iconic music of The Beach Boys”. In truth a “complete experience” would be revealing only one of them can surf and another member going bonkers before building a sandpit in his lounge, but we expect they’ll just stick to the lovely songs. And for a couple of hours at least, Inverness will be a little bit like California.

MUSIC > ROCK THE VIEW @ Ironworks, Wed 07 Jul

T

he last time the scallywags from Dundee came to Ironworks, they provided one of the loudest, most invigorating nights the venue has ever seen, albeit one where every single word uttered from the stage was incomprehensible to anyone unfamiliar with their gabbled hometown brogue. Inverness has been a regular stopping-off point for Kyle and the boys, marking out important moments in their career from the initial impact of the gloriously clattery “Wasted Little DJ’s”, through the spreading popularity of their debut album “Hat’s Off To The Buskers” and its accompanying hit single “Same Jeans”, to the difficult and critically underappreciated second album “Which Bitch?”. Now they’ve a third on the way- drenched in romanticism apparently- and are preparing for their regular bound-to-take-the-roof off appearance at T In The Park with a special warm up at Ironworks for 14+. We caught up with the band to find out how they’re looking forward to it. >>>>>>>>>

TARTAN HEART FRINGE BBQ @ Maple Court Hotel, Sun 31 Jul The annual fringe BBQ is always great fun and this year it’s in aid of an excellent cause, the Let Me Stay Campaign, which you can read more about on page 33. Live music (2-5.30pm) comes from Nels Andrews, AJ Roach and Ian Parks (from USA - on their UK Tour), Cross eyed Gals, Kriss and The Campaigners as well as the mighty Mystik Shoes. Followed by Deviation DJs (5.30-8.30pm)

HOOTS JULY Not a whole load of big names at Hoots in July, as perhaps is to be expected at the height of the festival season with promoters of the big outdoor events slamming all sorts of killjoy restrictions on “their” bands playing anywhere on the same continent within a couple of months of the festival shows. Nevertheless there are still some acts worth checking out and we’re particularly looking forward to The Side on Sun 04 (fresh from supporting Bon Jovi no less), mighty punks The Signal (supported by Swamp Radio) on Fri 09, the double bill of techno frenzy and smart pop from Metal Tek and Naked Strangers on Fri 23 and local rising stars He Slept On 57 concluding a nationwide tour on Sat 24. That ought to be enough to tide you over until August.

SHUTTER: PILLARS ALBUM LAUNCH @ Ironworks, Sat 03 Jul Considering how long they’ve been together and how confidently they’ve consolidated their place in the Inverness music scene, it’s surprising that only now are Shutter getting round to releasing their debut album. Hot on the heels of winning Best Band at the ICA Awards, they’re putting out their first long form opus in the shape of “Pillar” and launching it with a very special gig at Ironworks. With a sound that cascades instrumentals through a combination of soaring melody and full on thrash it’s not surprising that the album was produced with Andy Millar, a man who has worked with Shutter’s kindred spirits Mogwai, but the quartet of brothers James and Will Roberts, Matt Campbell and Pete Macdonald have imprinted proceedings with their own distinctive character, making for something almost as hypnotically absorbing as their live shows. For the Inverness gig, they’re even reshaping the venue with talk of a stage in the middle of the dancefloor, so it promises to be quite a night. If you want a taste of the sounds to expect, head for the band’s website. www.shutter.tv

>>>>>>>>> [PM] You’re playing up In Inverness again, a place where you’ve always gone down well. How do you rate the Highland crowds? [KF] Scottish Crowds are the best in the world, and Highland crowds are the best in the country- you guys certainly know how to have a good night out! We’ve played Inverness quite a few times now since we started in the band and it’s never let us down. That’s one of the main reasons we picked it for the T in the Park warm up. [PM] After the surge of success with the first album, were you disappointed that the second one wasn’t appreciated as much as it should have been? [KF] It’s hard to take because we really believed in the album. You have to get on though, there’s no point dwelling on it. In the grand scheme of things I think when people hear our forthcoming album some people might revisit the second one and it’ll make more sense then. It wasn’t badly reviewed at the time, it just didn’t have ‘radio singles’ on it and that’s how we got so big on the first album. [PM] Have you been writing much new stuff? What’s it sounding like? [KF] Our writing for the third album has been really amazing, I think we hit a rich vein of inspiration after a dry spell and we came up with about 40-50 in a month. Obviously that’s far too many for the album so we’ve had to be brutal and kill a few off – that’s not easy when songs are like children!! The few people that have heard it generally say it’s the best we’ve done and that you can hear we have turned into a bigger and better band.

[PM] When you look back at your adventures over the past few years, what are the moments that stand out? [KF] There are so many. We never grew up expecting much out of life, but the way the band has worked out for us seems to deliver a new ‘best ever’ every week. Our first T in the Park was a major milestone, and playing the Royal Albert Hall with Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller was pretty special too!! [PM] What other bands round right now are you listening to? [KF] We’ve been listening to a lot of Biffy; tons of old stuff like Stooges and Stones. There are still a lot of good unsigned bands in Dundee like The Twist- catch them while you can!! [PM] Have you got the rest of the year planned out? [KF] Now we have a bunch of new songs to learn and get really good live for the album tour. We haven’t actually booked that yet as we are still putting the final touches to the record and we want to get everything done right this time round. [PM] You started as a covers band. Is there a View tribute act yet? [KF] Apparently there are a few bands that play some of our songs. It’s fun to put our song titles into You Tube and see who does what with any given track. Give it a try yourself; there are some bedroom heroes out there!!

MUSIC > CD REVIEWS > Feast on 8 hours of Trojan... VARIOUS ARTISTS-Trojan Sounds & Pressure: ModReggae/The Heavy Heavy Monster Sound/Trojan Ska: Ska-ing West!/Trojan Dub: Foundation Dub (Trojan) In truth, we don’t really need any other albums to listen to this month other than this collection of four double CDs from reggae’s pre eminent label. Showing both the scope of creativity and wealth of talented artists(from Dave and Ansel Collins, through The Upsetters, King Tubby and Augustus Pablo to Horace Andy and Scientist) on the label, there’s eight hours of sheer aural delights spread over four double CDs of prime reggae brilliance. The Foundation Dub and Heavy Heavy Monster Sound collections are best of the best, but, to be honest, you might as well just get the lot and let your senses turn into a mighty universe. Brilliant. 65 DAYS OF STATIC- We Were Exploding Anyway (Hassle) More sonic boom, this time coming from atop the post-rock barricades. 65DOS have an admirably unshackled view of their place in the scheme of things. They’re calling this album a game changer and the first hint of glories to come, something that even a guest vocal from The Cure’s Robert Smith (on Come To Me) can’t contradict. Check out their fine blogs on their website at 65daysofstatic.com for more. ROLO TOMASSI- Cosmology (Hassle) The Hassle label (see above) has come up with another winner in the shape of Rolo Tomassi who explore vaguely Biffyesque territory, but invest it with the individuality that comes from having a female singer. It gives the genre a completely different resonance and having been recorded in LA it positively throbs with an assertion that the world is theirs for the taking. TRACEY THORN-Love And Its Opposite (Strange Feeling) There’s a fine cover version here too in the shape of Lee Hazelwood’s Come On Home To Me as Tracey Thorn, with assistance from the likes of Hot Chip’s Al Doyle and The Invisible’s Leo Taylor, continues her shift back to creativity after taking time out to raise her kids. As a prime influence on musicians like Kurt Cobain when she was in the lovely Marine Girls and ensuing pop ubiquity with Everything But The Girl, she’s now making the sort of elegantly thoughtful music you’d expect from someone entrenched in secure domesticity. It’s not going to change the world, but it’s not going to make it a worse place either. THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM- American Slang (SideOneDummy) If there’s a moment that’s going to summarise the heights of Gaslight Anthem’s career, it’s when Bruce Springsteen joined them on stage at Glastonbury for The ’59 Sound, a song The Boss himself could quite easily have penned. And you’d have to have had a heart of stone not to love the look of sheer delight on singer Brian Fallon’s face as he shared a stage with his hero. Alas, sounding a bit like Springsteen is ultimately best left to Bruce himself as their second album demonstrates, every song an increasingly distant echo of Asbury Park. UFFIE- Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans (Ed Banger/Because Music) Superior pop rap from the Floridian who first came to attention with the rather dumb Pop The Glock, but who has brought sometime Madonna collaborator Mirwais on board and now even finds space for a brave, and rather good cover version of Siouxsie and The Banshees’ Hong Kong Garden. And you’ve got to admire any rant against fellow rappers’ obsessions with their bleeding cars, especially since she even manages to draft Pharell Williams in to play the bad guy. MATISYAHU-Light (100%) We started with reggae and we’ll end with it too, courtesy of the genre’s most unlikely exponent, a Hassidic Jew from Crown Heights, Brooklyn who actually manages to turn his take on the genre into something more than cartoon clumsiness, his last album even nominated for a best reggae Grammy. He’s brought such luminaries as Sly & Robbie, Delroy Williams and experimental turntablist Ooah on board for a classy mix of dancehall, ska, pop and folk. Intriguing. LOCAL ACTS: JAMES MACKENZIE AND THE AQUASCENE-Frase and Phable (Aqua) Melodic, yearning singer-songwriting set apart from the run of the mill thanks to appealingly unpolished strings and harmonies. There’s something tender and rather promising going on here. WE ARE MARS- Bedtime Story (We Are Mars) Featuring previous members of The Veritas, The Cereal Killers and Just, We Are Mars will appeal to anyone who’s after chiming guitars and impassioned vocals. This is their strongest song to date, but they seem to have a fair few more up their sleeves. Still very much a work in progress, but worth following. Check them out at myspace.com/ wearemarsmusic 30

Report Sunday 13th June: 6.09pm

BLONDIE’s Debbie Harry cuts an iconic figure singing iconic tunes... highlight perhaps being ‘Call Me’ merging out of Muse’s ‘Uprising’ - a wee pop at Matt Bellamy’s crew ripping Blondie off?...

check out our log of events as they happened @ rocknesslive.co.uk

Saturday 12th June: 4.02pm

...the very, very, excellent DAN LE SAC VS SCROOBIUS

PIP may not have been billed particularly prominently, but RockNess punters are smart enough to know their onions... 2 minutes before they came on stage there was only a handful of people on the Clash arena - but come the opening stilted strums and beats of opener ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’ the tent was packed and jumping. Clever, clever rhymes delivered with wit and precision by Scroobius, fresh beats’n’sounds conjured up by Dan made them a real highlight. Stunning. “We drove for

9 hours to get here then play a song about suicide 3 songs in!”

Friday 11th June: 7.40pm

“It’s gonna be a good show” says Rou Reynolds of ENTER SHIKARI... 2 hrs later he’s hanging off the lighting rig while the rest of the band unleash their mayhem on the crowd. Take your pick of high points - difficult to beat the climax of ‘Juggernauts’, but ‘No Sleep Tonight’, ‘Zzzonked’ and ‘Anything Can Happen...’ are crowd faves also. Shame no ‘Sorry You’re Not A Winner’ with its crowd participation, but that a sign of how far ES have come and how many great tunes they have to choose from. A Good Show Indeed.

Sunday 13th June: 9.10pm

VAMPIRE WEEKEND’s Ezra Koenig charms rather than wows but its the tunes - particularly intro’s and choruses - that get the crowd animated. ‘Walcott’ just wins, we think.

Sunday 13th June: 4.15pm

Jaunting through the Clash tent en route to the car park, I realised that the band on the stage were HADOUKEN! - on 2 and a half hours early!!! A quick run to the car park to alert the rest of the party and we at least caught part of a great set. Now, I’m not one to moan (I’m not, really!) - but WHY was there NO WAY of finding out that stage times had changed? Not even a piece of paper outside the tent. Grrr. The only real organisational let down for me - but a significant one. Had I missed the band altogether I would have been ‘reet miffed’. As it was, they were energetically great, ‘M.A.D’ a highlight...

Saturday 12th June: 8.07pm

The variety and quality of food on offer this year was a real step up. From stonebaked pizzas to pie specialists and the excellent Argyll Food Producers tent, plenty of good food and good value about. And this year there was even a veggie stall - hence this veggie hot dog. Mmmmm, hot do-o-o-o-og....

Missed:

The thing about having such a great line-up is that it turns out you can’t see ‘em all - you got to make hard choices. So pay your respects to the acts we didn’t get to see but that apparently tore the place down.... IAN BROWN, ANNIE MAC, BOYS NOIZE, DOVES, MACCABEES, CHASE & STATUS, DAVE CLARKE, DERRICK MAY plus 2 acts that were widely reported to have stolen the show - VITALIC and SOULWAX!

Sunday 13th June: 10.51pm

From ‘New York City Cops’ to ‘Take It Or Leave It’ via a stunning trail of top tunes including ‘Last Night’ and ‘Juicebox’, New York’s finest, THE STROKES, effortlessly swept all before them to claim the RockNess 2010 main stage as their own. Julian Casablancas doesn’t like to do the overblown rock front-man act, preferring some laconic intimately drawled asides – then to let the songs do the talking. They spoke just fine...

Sunday 13th June: 7.15pm

In their stunning live performance guise, BLOODY BEETROOTS DEATHCREW 77, the be-masked Italian headcases, rocked the Clash tent to its very knees - a brilliant hybrid of tough beats with rock riffs and screamed vocals. Another crossover act that really delivered to the max.

Saturday 12th June: 8.47pm

If no-one had ever uttered the expression “Oh. My. God!” before, several thousand dazzled punters would have invented the phrase on the spot. APHEX TWIN - Richard James - is without question, a sonic genius. For one and one half hours he assaulted the senses unremittingly. Sound is his tool - bass that first shakes your legs then piledrives into your chest, ambient pads that tickle the back of your brain, then beats and sounds that slice through your skull like a moulinex. And lasers too! I looked around several times and saw smiles and laughs and sheer baffled wonder on the faces of an audience oommunally uplifted, churned up and spat out by the noise machine. There’s no such thing as genre’s. Richard James is a genre. Personal highlight.

How a young Scottish boy has been badly let down by the legal system - and how YOU can help... The Tartan Heart Fringe Barbecue at Maple Court on Sat 31 Jul is always a popular event for those getting excited about Belladrum, but this year there’s even more of a reason to attend, as it’s in aid of the LET ME STAY campaign, organised by Inverness’ Kriss Ritchie. We asked her about it: M Let Me Stay is a very personal campaign. Tell us the basic background to it all. >>> My nephew Guillaume refused to board the plane back to his mother in France in January this year. He broke down at the airport and told his father that his uncle in France was hitting him every time he wanted to make contact with his dad. My brother Vincent Ritchie could not force his child back to this abuse. He called Guillaume’s mother and told her what had happened. He also called the police and social services so they too knew what had happened and could hopefully intervene giving this British child the protection he needs. Guillaume’s mother raised a petition under the Hague Convention to extradite Guillaume back to France. The UK’s most eminent professor of child psychology categorically stated that the abuse Guillaume had suffered was authentic and furthermore it was not only sanctioned but promoted by his mother. He said that the child was psychologically traumatized by the abuse and that he would have great concerns if the child were to be domiciled in France. Despite this the court ruled that Guillaume be returned there for the courts to deal with. Guillaume wants to live with his father here in Scotland. His needs have been ignored by every system set up and paid to ensure his needs and not those of his parents are met. I have never written so many letters or made so many phone calls in my life as I have since this campaign started. I have met more brick walls than I care to remember and got to the point where I am thoroughly disgusted by my own country’s so called child protection system. Who will investigate this story? Everyone I turn to tells me they have no authority to do anything, if something looks like it can be done by an official body our hopes are quickly dashed by ‘oh, sorry it doesn’t apply in Scotland’. The Scottish Court of Session returned this child to a place where his safety was in serious doubt instead of having the integrity to stand up and fight for this child’s rights. Lord Menzies who made this decision is himself a father, his reasoning is beyond my comprehension.

M What are you hoping to achieve with the campaign? >>> I am hoping to bring Guillaume and his brother Freddie home to where they want to be. There is no doubt that Guillaume needs to be in the safety of his father’s protection and unconditional love. I also hope to raise awareness of the injustice my nephew has faced, to make people aware of the differences between the Scottish and English judicial system which has failed this child so miserably, in the hope that this disgusting failure does not befall another innocent child. If this case was presented in England both parents would have been entitled to legal aid ensuring the child’s rights were protected as the child is the most vulnerable. Instead the parent with the most money was the one being catered for. Thus the British taxpayer paid for the mothers’ lawyers as she was entitled to legal aid under the Hague convention. This funding was inexhaustible. My brother who was in a position of trying to protect his child from physical abuse and psychological trauma was given no help from his own country despite the fact that he has no financial assets or savings. He has been sent a bill for £14,000 for trying to protect his child. M What will the money raised be used for? >>> Every penny raised will be used to pay a lawyer in France to ensure Guillaume gets the representation he is entitled to. French law states at the age of 9 years children can decide where they want to live and with which parent. They are also entitled to free legal representation. This has been blocked by the mother, which is illegal but still no questions are asked. We now need to pay for a lawyer to represent my brother who will in turn ensure another lawyer represents Guillaume and protects his human rights. M Have you had much national / international exposure / press coverage? >>> Our story has been front page news in The Sun, The Scotsman, The Highland and Lochaber News. The Highland News Group has run a story almost every week and I can’t thank Claire Doughty enough for her support. It has also been on the news in America causing a bit of a stir. A mainstream television channel documentary is also in the offing. This case has made some kind of journalistic history which lends more weight to Guillaume’s plight. M What’s the next step? >>> Guillaume should be coming back here on 03 Jul. I pray this does happen and

Kriss, Guillaume and Vince

his mother does not find a way to block this access as he needs to see the support from people here for him and to know we are still fighting and that we will never stop until he is heard, until he is safe and until he is happy. My brother Vincent will be auctioning off his car- a beautiful Mazda RX8- as it’s the only thing he actually owns, to raise funds. Apart from this we are having the campaign gala/ gig day to raise funds. The raffle includes a £210 bottle of malt and many other exclusive malts as well as a 3 month membership at Fit 4 Less amongst many other fantastic prizes. So many people have offered to help. We have over 11,000 supporters from all over the world joining us on Facebook and signing the petition. My brother Vince and mum Elma have gone through so much and it sometimes feels like this devastation is unending but I would like to send them both a message of hope. I will ensure we bring Guillaume home if it’s the last thing I do! M Anything else we should know? >>> I received a letter from 10 Downing Street today to let me know that they have the letter and enclosures I sent and are dealing with it. What that means I do not know but I feel positive that the prime minister has been made aware of the situation.

SPECIALS/TALK > SPECIALS > Inverness Highland Games... INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES (at Armed Forces Day) @ Northern Meeting Park, Sat 24 Jul

W

ithout us really noticing, the Highland Games season has crept up on us, inasmuch as any bunch of burly fellows waving tree trunks and various heavy bits of metal can “creep up”, but it’s bound to be grabbing the attention this month as the INVERNESS

HIGHLAND GAMES return home from Bught Park to Northern Meeting Park for the first time

since 1948. They were first held at NMP way back in 1864 and while the games themselves had already been going for over forty years by then, it’s widely regarded as the event’s spiritual home, meaning this should be a very special return. Another major change is that instead of taking place over a whole weekend, things have been streamlined into just one day, which should ramp up the excitement. There’ll be eight hours of Heavy Events, Highland Dancing, Solo Piping, Traditional Music, Pipe Bands and all-age athletics plus, with the central location for the Games, a good chance of the party spilling out onto the streets of Inverness afterwards. Before the games themselves begin there’ll be a gathering of massed pipe and drums in Falcon Square at 12.15pm and a parade through the city at 1pm to celebrate ARMED FORCES DAY, giving you a chance to show your support for armed forces past and present. There’ll be nine pipe bands and the public are encouraged to follow along behind the parade. After a spectacular ceremony at Northern Meeting Park at 1.30pm when Games Chieftain Provost Jimmy Gray will officially welcome the veterans and their families to Inverness, you will be able to enjoy a whole range of Military Displays and Highland Games attractions before witnessing a Final Parade which will feature a Drumhead Ceremony and the presentation of Veteran’s Badges. If past years are anything to go by, there’ll be many hundreds of folk travelling to the event from all over the world making Inverness for one day the very heart of a cultural and historical consciousness. It may be an age-old tradition, but it’s one that seems to be moving confidently through the beginning of the 21st century. And, back home at last, looks like going from strength

42

…at Armed Forces Day: Making History by Going Home... to strength. If you’ve never been before, now’s your chance to see what you’ve been missing. Ticket prices this year have been reduced to £6 and £3 so you can enjoy the day’s entertainment at a bargain price. With the event taking place right in the centre of the city, the streets will obviously be crowded, so it’ll be best to take advantage of the FREE PARK AND RIDE SCHEME operating from Bught Park. See below for more details. And for a full programme of events, go to invernesshighlandgames.com

HIGHLAND DANCING

The 2010 Highland Dancing Competition is organised by Elizabeth

Fraser of the Fraser School of Dancing and is one of the highlights of any visit to the Games. Entries are still being accepted for this year - closing on July 17 - and if you would like to take part all you have to do is email fraserfestivals@googlemail.com

FOLK DANCERS FROM ST. JOHANN OB HOHENBURG, AUSTRIA It’s not all traditional Scots activities at the Games and this year sees a visit from an Austrian folk dancing troupe, based near the Styrian regional capital, Graz. The dance group’s aim is to preserve traditional folk dance customs and Styrian national dress, the emphasis being on sociability and enjoyment, rather than perfect footwork. Since 1995, the group has been actively involved in the organisation of the biennial international folkdance festival - “Folklore Global” - and last year hosted a group of Scottish Country Dancers from Fortrose and the surrounding area; hence their appearance in Scotland this year, as we return their hospitality. Apart from folk dances, they also perform “Schuhplattler”, which contains much slapping and clapping. Everyone in Inverness will be doing it before you know it!

PARKING

Ample parking is available via the Bught Park (on the River side) where a Park & Ride

service will be in operation from 10am-5.30pm. Local Veterans can obtain concessionary entry by contacting the local British Legion Club on 01463 233710. Or contact Branch PRO on 01463 238073.

CAIRNGORM SOAPBOX EXTREME @ Aviemore, Fri 23 & Sat 24 Jul While the likes of the Snowman Rally are all very well, they do tend to rely on things like proper cars, petrol, engines and stuff. However the child in us tends to prefer the romance of cobbling together something out of things you find in a shed or piled up on a skip, hence the appeal of the annual Soapbox Extreme. Actually the constructions are rather more sophisticated than the impression we might have given and they have to be to clock decent times using just the force of gravity on the longest, fastest and most testing course in Britain. Over the two days there are practice runs, timed qualifying, group races and finals, all set in stunning scenery. In an ideal world it would be televised in primetime, but until TV programmers see sense you’ll just have to get along and experience it for yourself. www.soapboxracing.co.uk

THEATRE > COMEDY JACOBITE COUNTRY @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 28-Sat 31 Jul

THEATRE

D

espite the title, don’t go expecting any po-faced sentimentalism in this comedy from Wickborn Henry Adam, the man responsible for Dogstar’s 2007 hit ‘e Polish Quine. The Dogstar connection continues with the show’s director being Matthew Zajac, writer of and performer

in that company’s multi award winning The Tailor Of Inverness. Pretty impeccable credentials then and the synopsis has already got us hooked. “Haggis McSporran left the Highlands to become the king of comedy. Now he’s coming home for an interview on Jacobite Radio with his old pal Craitur Face Macleod a man he met all those years ago when they escaped together from Craig Dunain Hospital, met the Loch Ness Monster and tried to cure cancer with Granny and her Shetland ponies.” Now that sounds like a yarn and half. Don’t miss it.

JASON MANFORD @ Eden Court Empire, Wed 28 & Thu 29 July This could be the last time for a while that Manford will be devoting such a huge chunk of time to something like a nationwide tour as his seemingly unstoppable surge towards ubiquity has resulted in being given the job of replacing Adrian Chiles on The One Show. It’s the perfect role for him really, perfectly suiting his persona as an edgier and ultimately more likeable version of Peter Kay. Last time he came up here he was obviously on the way to the tippy-top, but having exploded out of his Channel 4 panel show habitat, he’s now as well known across generations as the likes of the hateful McIntyre. Manford’s shows are every bit as engaging and warm as his TV appearances, though obviously allowing more space for his well constructed observations to shine through. He and John Bishop are proof that there’s still life in an old-school format. Should be good.

THEATRE > DANCE MAGIC OF THE DANCE @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 20 Jul, 7.30pm A big hit last time it came to Eden Court, this is a kind of sibling of Riverdance and just as spectacular. We’re promised a performance where the dancers “jump over boxes and stomp until their shoes catch fire”, something that you’re not going to see every night of the week. The show moves through the history of Irish dance and it’s choreographed by eight times world champion John Carey with a haunting narrative from none other than the mighty Christopher Lee, so expect something pretty extraordinary. The million people who’ve already seen it seem to agree so booking early would appear to be essential.

PROJECT Y 2010 @ Eden Court Empire, Fri 30 Jul, 8pm Another returning dance troupe and again a proven crowd pleaser. YDance brings together the best young dancers from all over Scotland, this time with choreography from Andy Howitt and Errol White. If you’ve been put off modern dance by notions of inaccessibility or impenetrability, then this should show you just how entertaining the art form can be. Recommended.

THEATRE > DECKY DOES A BRONCO

ALEISTER CROWLEY: A PASSION FOR EVIL @ Invergordon Arts Centre, Fri 02 Jul, 8pm An Edinburgh Fringe preview, John Burns’ one man show about the self-proclaimed “Beast” carries particular heft up here with Crowley having got up to much of his funny business by the shores of Loch Ness. Judging by the snippet posted online (http://aleister-crowley.podmatic.com), it’s a genuinely unsettling production and hence only suitable for over 16s.

ROMEO & JULIET @ Cawdor Castle, Sun 18 Jul, 6pm Romeo & Juliet seem to be everywhere these days and hot on the heels of both Scottish Ballet’s majestic production at Eden Court and a reality TV series relocating the action to eighties Coventry, here’s a chance to catch the mighty Illyria company performing Shakespeare’s most instantly accessible work for the first time in a decade. Their productions are guaranteed to enchant and with a setting as lovely as Cawdor Castle, wholehearted recommendation is a given. Suitable for all ages, in every sense.

DECKY DOES A BRONCO (PICTURED) @ Eden Court lawn, Mon 26 Jul, 4pm, Tue 27 Jul 11am Not only is Eden Court the finest creative space in Inverness, but the people running it have consistently shown a sense of adventure in utilising that space. Last year it was Macbeth in the car park and now it’s an exhilarating sounding production from the multi-award winning company Grid iron, performed on the lawn of the venue. There’ll quite possibly be the huff’n’puff of outrage at bringing attention to the activity of “broncoing”, the act of standing on a swing, working it up to the bumps level with the bar, kicking the swing over your head and jumping beneath it, but it should make for a spectacular piece of physical theatre as the cast enact Douglas Maxwell’s story of five lads acting out their dreams and fears in the local schoolyard. Definitely a case of don’t try this at home and all the more thrilling for that. www.eden-court.co.uk

INNER SOUND-HMS PINAFORE @ Eden Court OneTouch, Fri 23 Jul Last time Inner Sound came to Eden Court it was with their highly acclaimed version of The Gondoliers and they’re again presenting their take on Gilbert and Sullivan with an adaptation of the much-loved HMS Pinafore. Subtitled “The Lass That Loved A Sailor” it’s a fine excuse for much talk of grog, poop decks and sundry other nautical terms, as well as being a cracking comic opera. Set in the roaring twenties and directed by Ann Lampard and Tom Colwell it gives you a chance to see and hear some of Skye’s finest young singers.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE @ Logie Steading, Thu 29 Jul, 6pm These days barely a moment passes on TV without some sort of Georgian how’s yer father taking place, but it can’t be denied that Jane Austen’s magnificent story fully deserves the never ending remakes. And this might just be one of the best, with a fabulous setting perfectly suited to the tale of Lizzie Bennett, Mr Darcy and the emotional entanglements woven around a world of balls, carriages and crinolines. Good stuff.

EATING OUT:

The Review: CLACHNAHARRY INN CLACHNAHARRY INVERNESS 01463 239806 You’ve probably noticed the CLACHNAHARRY INN as you drive out of town on the road to Beauly but unless you’re a real ale aficionado (for which the place is praised to the rooftops) you may not have stopped. This is partly due to the fact that it’s right on the street with no private parking (meaning you tend to look back over your shoulder as you continue your journey, saying, “we must go there some time...”) partly due to not having any noticeable reputation for food. All that has changed now that it’s been taken over by one of ICA’s favourite chefs, DAVEY ASPIN, ex of Rocpool Reserve and, before that working under Marco Pierre White at London’s Oak Room and helping Paul Heathcote’s eponymous Manchester restaurant regain its Michelin star. Recently he’s been shaping a reinvented Clachnaharry Inn, maintaining the quality of ale on offer and the beautiful location,

with a view out back to die for, but also concentrating on providing a quality of cooking to make the place an essential destination for tourists and locals alike. The sign outside still promises merely Quality Bar Food, but presumably it won’t be long before it’s made more obvious that there’s a proper restaurant within. Certainly anyone who visits won’t be disappointed. There’s a large back room-currently being refurbished-where the restaurant proper will ultimately be sited. Until then, half a dozen or so tables are placed in the pub itself, making for an incongruous scene of people tucking into highend cooking while an auld fella sits at the bar munching from a packet of crisps and watching the football on the telly and, a few yards away, a regular distractedly abandons coinage to the fruity. The couple at the table next to us are fortunately so captivated by their food that they don’t notice their table is right on the flight path twixt oche and dartboard, but fortunately no one pops in for an impromptu game of arrows.

There are no menus as such. Instead, one wall is dominated by a large blackboard telling you what’s on offer, not differentiating between starters, mains and puddings. It’s a good move, since it allows customers to decide just how large or small a meal they’re going to have (for example, a ploughman’s is included) and suggests, in neat writing with thank the Lord - all the spelling correct and apostrophes in the right places, that there’s the prospect of dishes changing according to seasonality/ availability. Before you’ve even glimpsed the food, you know that this is going to be far, far more than just glorified pub grub. The arrival of freshly baked bread rolls confirms that we’re in for a treat. Four different varieties, beautifully cooked, are served with a trio of quenelles of differently flavoured butters salted, herby and beetroot - their vibrant colours a neatly confident introduction to what lies ahead. To start I have Organic Scotch Egg, partly because at £3 it’s

55

financially the entry level dish on the menu and partly to see just how that most Caledonian of concepts (“you’re Scottish – fry something!”, to quote the wise Dr Who) can be elevated from the cricket-ball-rolled-in-grit found at service stations to something of restaurant quality. The answer, it seems is to keep it simple and use good ingredients. Boiled egg retaining just the right amount of softness and thankfully devoid of any grey tinge, the yolk bright yellow instead and the whole encased in a thin layer of wellseasoned sausage meat before being deep fried. It’s served on a black slate with a smear of gloriously sparky mustard and little mounds of salt and pepper. Only that. No unnecessary frippery or pointless salad garnishes, just a great scotch egg. The best I’ve ever eaten? Only by a million miles. My companion has another unlikely sounding starter, Sardines On Toast. And once more a simple “snack” is transformed into something very special. Again the presentation is

56

immaculate, two fillets of grilled sardine sitting on what is, basically a most superior toast topper, containing hints of curry flavours. The whole is surrounded with artfully arranged diced tomato and looks every bit as good as it tastes. For my main I recognise one of the chef’s signature dishes from his Rocpool days and go for 24 Hour Braised Caithness Beef. This is one of those things you’re most unlikely to try at home unless you’ve got your own waterbath, though it could presumably be done in an Aga or such like. Cooking beef at a low temperature for a day makes it so tender you don’t even need to think about using a knife to cut it and ensures its flavour is intensified magnificently. The result, served in a neat iron pot with shallots, carrots and a rich gravy has one more surprise

to offer. At the bottom of the pot there’s an even richer, wonderfully smooth mash, made it seems with almost as much butter as potato. It’s a glorious dish, perhaps better suited to winter than summer, but demonstrates the work that goes into something ostensibly so simple. The lovely mash (or probably, to be more precise, pomme puree) also makes an appearance in my companion’s dish of Belly Pork, served this time in a copper pan on the side. The belly pork at Contrast had hitherto held the title of Best In Town, but it’s trumped here by an even more accomplished

60

creation. The most ornately arranged of the dishes we sample, it’s a veritable sculpture of pork with crispy crackling, mushrooms, shallots, carrots and perfectly cooked broccoli. Not so sure about the crisps which appear to be there for architecturally aesthetic reasons rather than any contribution to the taste experience or the little jug of accompanying sauce which has no discernable flavour whatsoever, but the rest is adjudged remarkable. By this point in proceedings we’re positively stuffed, but feel it our duty to at least make an attempt to explore the puddings and once again they hit the mark. My Bakewell Tart is light and fragrant, still warm from the oven and managing to be flavoursome without lurching into oversweetness. My companion opts for a wondrously creamy

Highland Blue Cheese, served with celery, grapes, oatcakes and more homemade rolls. A fine end to a meal that’s set a heck of a standard for anyone else to match in the months ahead. Pricewise, it’s unsurprisingly not cheap, ending up at just over the fifty quid mark for two (including drinks). We might suggest that a set lunch at around the £15 mark might give even more people a chance to sample such extraordinary cooking, though perhaps we’re just being selfish about the future prospect of having to save up for a return rather than popping in every week. Whatever the case, we can’t recommend the place highly enough. Be there now. Total for 2 (exc. drinks) £45.00

Hair Removal Techniques from Gail MacKinnon at Sandalwoods Beauty Spa If there was one thing you could change about yourself what would it be? If the answer was getting rid of unwanted hair then read on because there is help available for this problem in most if not all beauty salons. Beauty salons these days are busy places with friendly, sympathetic and knowledgeable therapists who deal with the issue of hair removal on a daily basis and understand the embarrassment of that furry growth that makes you cover up or keep your head down. Lets not underestimate the implications this can have on someone, low self esteem, little or no social life and in some cases some can even suffer depression. Yet salons have technology from simple to advanced to either semi-permanently or permanently remove this hair. From male to female, young to old, body hair or facial – all can be treated. The Semi-Permanent methods of waxing and tweezing are quick, inexpensive ways to remove fuzz and leave the skin silky smooth for weeks. It eliminates the use of razors, which leave you with that stubbly, quick re-growth not to mention the nicks and cuts. Regular appointments every 4-6 weeks can really keep this problem in check. However some people dream of a day with no tweezers or sticky wax and that’s when Permanent methods come in to play from the tried and tested Electrolysis to advance methods like I.P.L (Intense Pulse Light) systems. Electrolysis is generally these days confined to use on

History of The Kilt from Val at Ben Wyvis Kilts The kilt worn today is called the feileadh bheag (meaning the little kilt). In the past the Highlanders wore the feileadh mor (meaning big wrap). This was a huge blanket of woven cloth about two metres in breadth and between four and six metres long. To put it on, he had to lay down on it, with the lower of the two longer sides just about knee level and wrap it around himself, fastening a belt around his middle to keep the thing together. Then he stood up and draped the top half around his torso and sometimes over his head, according to the

weather. The cloth from which the plaid was made was striped and the favourite colours were purple and blue, though dark brown was preferable when hiding in the heather, on the moors. The close weave of the cloth was midge proof and semi waterproof. It also served as a sleeping bag, when one had to sleep out in the open. The raw wool was first soaked in human urine, which removed the grease and acted as a fixing agent for the colours. Then it was washed and dried. After spinning each skein of wool it was put in a pot and

[ health • style • beauty • fitness ] various species of lichen were used to give the different colours, such as bramble, dandelion root, St John’s Wort, birch leaves and broom. One story often told is that of a Glengarry furnace master from England who felt that the long plaid was an industrial hazard and a hindrance to his workers and many people believe that this is where the little kilt was derived. In fact it seems far more likely that the little kilt evolved simply as a matter of convenience and as the availability of other clothing such as jackets, jerkins and tunics increased.

This converted into £19.5 million of sales and a whopping 22% increase on 12 months ago. To put this in context, last May’s tallies were 92 completions and £16 million of sales. Perhaps even more surprisingly, these figures also exceed the totals recorded two years ago, so a good month for property. The average price in the Highlands is creeping up as demand begins

sponsored by HSPC.co.uk

to push prices back up. For instance, figures released by the HSPC indicate average house prices in May reached £175,936 compared to £174,652 last year. This rather modest increase of just 1% is more significant when added to the rolling quarterly average which is up by £2,625 on this time last year. However the high levels of houses coming on to the market for sale will likely

have a stabilising affect of any big movement upward in average prices, in May HSPC had 200 properties come onto the market – a 63% increase on number registered in May 09. So the improvement in activity continues, with lots for sellers to choose from and sales completions increasing.

Highland house sales continued their upward trend during May.

Tell us about the Moonlight Meander, where was it, how long was it? Who were you raising money for?

Machala & Kelly stretch their legs for charity during 2 long walks… We caught up with them to find out a bit more:

The Moonlight Meander Walk took place at Culbin Forest at Brodie Castle, it was 10 long wet miles and was in aid of The Highland Hospice. (HSPC staff Machala and Kelly both entered the walk). What were your thoughts when you saw the torrential rain as you were about to set out on the moonlight meander? It was a thought to go out in the rain, but because The Hospice is such worthwhile cause relying solely on donations to enable them to carry on their good work, it didn’t feel such an effort.

Did you struggle at any Point? We didn’t really struggle, although around the 6 mile mark the weather deteriorated and made walking conditions more difficult, along with fact that it was pitch black for the last couple of miles! How did you both feel when you finished? We were delighted to have finished the walk in good time; 2 hours 20 mins. Do you know where you came in the finishing post? On completion, you had to go to the Registration Tent to report that we had completed the walk, at this point we were advised that only one other person had finished ahead of

us which was good to know after trudging through the rain! How did you get on at the Branicht Walk? We got on well, we did the 13 mile walk. It was definitely more of a challenge than the previous week’s walk given that it was an extra 3 miles and on a hard concrete surface. Branicht was raising money for various charities. How was the weather? It was certainly an improvement on the previous week, but it wasn’t letting us off that easily! Bang on 10pm, when the walk started it poured with rain for a solid 20 minutes but dried out and warmed up after that so it was perfect walking weather.

sponsored by HSPC.co.uk

How long did the walk take? We were absolutely delighted to achieve the walk in 2 hours and 50 minutes. Did you enjoy the walk? Yes, it was great, there was a good turnout for it, having streetlights was also a bonus to help us along the way. There was a good atmosphere as there was plenty to see, lots of people to talk and the stewards really helped to spur you on. How much did you raise? We have raised over £685 so far for both charity walks, we would like to thank the generosity of those who sponsored us. in particular South

Forrest, Cowan Douglas Law and MacKenzie & Cormack What was the total Raised for each charity walk? This is still to be confirmed, however it was estimated that the monies raised for Moonlight Meader was in the region of £38,000.00 and we are still to hear confirmation of the Branicht Walk. Would you do it again? Yes! WHOM WILL YOU BLAME?

Upon which of the following excuses are you building your hopes of escaping Hell and reaching Heaven? Whom will you blame if like the rich man in Luke 16, you die, are buried and in Hell you lift up your eyes being in torments?

YOU CANNOT BLAME GOD for God is “not willing that any should perish.” II Peter 3:9. He would have all men to be saved, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

YOU CANNOT SAY “There is plenty of time to settle this matter,” Listen to His solemn warning against delay, “because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded… I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh…Then shall they call upon Me, but I will not answer.” Proverbs 1:24-28. YOU CANNOT BLAME CIRCUMSTANCES for there is nothing that can keep a sinner from Christ if he wants to come to Him for salvation. Jesus says“Ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life.” John 5:40.

YOU CANNOT BLAME THE LORD JESUS CHRIST for He said “I am come that they might have life.” John 10:10 “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37

YOU MAY SAY “I do not believe in Hell.” But, my friend, two minutes in Hell amid the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth will change your mind.

YOU CANNOT SAY “I am not a sinner,” for God says: “As by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Romans 5:12

When you realize then, as every one in Hell realizes today, that the Bible is the Word of God, that you are a sinner, that Christ died for sinners, that you could have been saved had you believed and accepted the Saviour of sinners as your own personal Saviour, and as the truth of it burst on your lost soul you will cry aloud in agony as you weep and wail and gnash your teeth, “Fool that I was, too late, too late.” There are no unbelievers in Hell, but they believed—too late.

YOU CANNOT SAY “I am doing the best I can,” “I have turned over a new leaf ” “I have a good heart,” “God is too good to punish me in Hell.” “I have done nothing worthy of Hell.” God says all your “righteousnesses are as filthy rags” in His sight. Isaiah 64:6. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately (incurably) wicked.” Jeremiah 17:9. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12.

If you are concerned about these matters it is God’s Spirit striving to show you your danger, your that guilt and your helplessness. You magazines!! are “without God,” And now goes in 67,000 “without Christ,” and without hope in the world. Ephesians 2:12. You have no claim on God, you have broken His laws phone 01463 715125 today!! and you are “condemned already” John 3:18 and awaiting the execution, but there is pardon for you today if you will have it. If you resist the Spirit, God says: “My Spirit shall not always strive with man.” Genesis 6:3.

You may say you do not believe all this, but the mere fact that you do not believe it does not alter the facts. YOU ARE LEFT WITHOUT EXCUSE “What wilt thou say when He shall punish thee?” Jeremiah 13:21 The responsibility where you spend Eternity – (Heaven or Hell) is yours and yours alone.

Friend, listen! God is offering you mercy and pardon: God loves you, Christ died as a substitute for your sins on the cross. You have to receive Him for yourself; no-one can do it for you..you need to have repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ- But do it now – or whom will you blame?

CARRIE USES FRENCH SKILLS TO START HER OWN BUSINESS A law graduate who learned to speak French during her year abroad has set up her own translation business for Highland companies. CARRIE BOOTH, 26, from Nairn provides French to English language services including translation, proofreading and transcribing at her business www.thetranslationbooth.co.uk With an aim to provide primarily for local businesses Carrie specialises in legal and financial translation, and already is catering for a French firm of lawyers. But she has also been in involved in other areas such as the translation of websites, assisting French documentary makers and a successful video game. Carrie said: “I wanted to do something that was related to my Law degree and I was interested in translating legal documents. That’s when I realised I could start my own business offering this service. So I went back to university to do a Masters in translation to be properly qualified.

“I’ve been surprised by the response so far. I’ve been really busy and have had a variety of clients. I want to have lots of Highland businesses on my books as I want to make sure I offer a good local service. I believe in the personal touch and can even go into companies and work from there. I feel this is really important and think that’s a benefit for everyone. She added: “Business Gateway have been a great help since I first went along to see them. I didn’t have experience in running a business so it was reassuring to know that they were there to advise me in areas such as marketing and finance. I know that they will always be there so I can turn to them whenever I need additional support.” MARK MACKINTOSH, Regional Development Officer, Business Gateway Inverness office said: “Carrie is an example of someone who saw a gap in the market for the skills she possessed. We have been advising Carrie from the beginning and look forward to helping her expand and develop her business.” Business Gateway provides practical help, advice and support for new and growing businesses. KEN KELMAN: it’s all about bread...

B

read’s expensive these days, isn’t it? In the seventies a loaf cost about 15 pence. Mind you back then you had to queue for it and often they were all gone by nine in the morning. Many’s the day I spent at school with a couple of un-sliced 28-ouncers hidden in my bag, fearful that a bully would steal them or worse a teacher confiscate them and turn them into sandwiches for their midafternoon staff room picnic - which I’m sure they had daily though I could never prove it. We lived in fear of a lot of things in the seventies, not all rational .. much like today is suppose only the bread, all be it scarce, was cheaper. Over a pound for around 21 ones slices, assuming medium cut and counting the ends - that’s nearly a shilling a slice .. a shilling I tell you!!!!. They try to look kind by offering you three for £3 or two for £1.98 or whatever, but no single person I know can eat even one loaf before it goes foosty, never mind three. Then I saw it on the shelf. The wrapper, a pale turquoise with clear panels showing a delicious soft, thicksliced loaf beneath - and only 85 pence! All that and it was one of them new fangled oat based breads, which seem to keep longer than a purely wheat one. Needless to say it went straight into my basket. At home it toasted up fine, a wee bit cheese on top, slice of beetroot - excellent savoury snack. The blurb on the wrapper told me it was ‘low in saturated fat’ .. ‘a source of fibre’ .. and had ‘low sugars’ .. I truly felt that I was having a tasty, healthy snack, there was even the suggestion that just by eating this bread I was somehow lowering my cholesterol (the bad sort one hopes, because it seems as with bacteria there can be good cholesterol too). It was while I was reading the rest of the packet (Dr Who had finished and Family Guy was yet to start) that I notice the phrase “…two slices .. contains 1g of beta-glucan a third of your recommended intake…” Initially I thought it just gets better, then, despite not knowing what beta-glucan is or what it does I began to fret about how I would get the other two-thirds of my recommended intake. Besides just eating another 4 slices of bread - which is what they want you to do. Where does it come from? What does it do? .. Panic was beginning to set in, after all I didn’t want to end up with a beta-glucan deficiency. Hang on though, wait a minute -what does it do? What would the symptoms of beta-glucan deficiency be? I have the requisite number of limbs, I can walk all the way round the Eastgate without getting tired (phase one and two!), my colour vision’s fairly accurate and my hearing’s sufficient, there are at present none of those little white clouds on my fingernails and my bowel movements are good (sorry to gloat but they are). Seems what ever its is that beta-glucan does, is being done. Obviously I’m not deficient in it, somewhere in my diet I’m already getting my required daily amount, so there’s no need to worry. And so the not worrying continued all through the rest of the cheese on toast .. and through that further slice you always make, which seems a good idea but is never as good as the first two and leaves you wondering if it might have been better to make three slices in the first place, because then you wouldn’t have had that long period whilst you were making the third to go off the idea. Then I started to worry about beta-glucan overdose, if I’m already getting my daily dose somewhere else, every slice of this bread was putting me half a gramme over that limit. I wonder what the consequences will be, because at that price I’m not going to stop buying it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David plays an eccentric New Yorker who swaps his bourgeois existence for a more bohemian lifestyle in Woody Allen’s best comedy in 30 years. Reminiscent in style of Annie Hall and featuring a fantastic cast, Woody Allen fans are in for real a treat as he returns to form.

A television reporter and her cameraman are following a fire crew on night shift when a call comes through from a woman trapped inside an apartment. What they believed to be a routine call quickly turns into a nightmare when the team find themselves trapped inside the building with no means of escape from the living, or the dead...
