INVERNESS • AUGUST 2010

Scotland’s Housing Expo takes place at Milton of Leys in Inverness from 1 to 31 August showcasing over 50 fantastic houses designed with the future in mind. The homes on view at the Expo bring to life award-winning designs promoting eco-friendly living and using materials in exciting and inspiring ways. Each house plot is unique and, together, the development will be the first of its kind in the UK whilst promoting ‘green’ living to help the planet! The Expo aims to make good design and sustainable features commonplace in every home - just like the indoor WC that was such a revelation in the 1930s!

Scotland’s Housing Expo is based upon similar models found in mainland Europe, and particularly Finland, where historically the housing fair concept has proven very successful in stimulating quality design and innovation for housing. Aspiring to bring about a similar effect in the Highlands and throughout the UK, the Expo offers a model for future housing design and development. The homes on view are for sale or rent, with a proportion available for affordable housing.

KIDS GO FREE AT SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO! Thanks to support from the Inverness Common Good Fund you can take your kids along for free to enjoy a family day out this summer at Scotland’s Housing Expo; an event that will create a vibrant and living community around the development of over 50 fantastic homes, on show to the public during August. All school age children accompanied by an adult go free!

Every day there’ll be something different to see and do over the course of the month-long Expo, just off the A9 at Milton of Leys in Inverness. The event will feature workshops, performers, art and lots of fun indoor and outdoor activities in and around the homes. Check the website for details of the daily programme of events, including seminars for trade and industry. Why not go more than once and buy a season ticket! This ticket enables you to visit the Expo as many times as you wish during August – and all for just £10! Tickets: Season ticket £10, Adult £6, and Concession £4 for Over-60s, Students and unemployed. And remember, kids accompanied by an adult go free! Tickets can be purchased from Eden Court Box Office until 31 July – call 01463 234234. From 1 August tickets can be purchased on site at Scotland’s Housing EXPO Box Office. Foreword Forewor d OK, listen up... EVERY DAY of AUGUST, the SCOTTISH HOUSING EXPO is on. Over 50 weird and wonderful and clever and green houses to nose around - plus, apparently, loads more to see and do. So this here’s a reminder!

It’s OFFICIAL: Everythings gone MENTAL !! Theu month of August. The mighty BELLADRUM FESTIVAL dominates the entertainment landscape whilst the legendary BLACK ISLE SHOW brings a mass-appeal mix of agriculture, commerce, beer tents and funfair to Muir of Ord. That’s about it, right? Usually, yes - but tether those preconceptions to a post and come with us, because things are about to get weird... For one, WESTLIFE are playing. Yup, the biggest selling band of the last decade are coming up here to play at Cawdor Castle. And then there’s the LADYBOYS OF BANGKOK returning to claim their kingdom at Eden Court. If you like your males with a little more tostesterone, get along to the martial arts cage-fights of BATTLE IN THE GLEN at Ironworks - where you can also find some invaluable lessons in HOW TO SURVIVE A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE - the old one-two-kung-fu won’t help you there! And, whilst all this mayhem is unravelling, every single day of the month silently throbbing out at Milton of Leys, SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO will be on. Over 50 ‘houses of the future, today...’ type-stuff! But it doesn’t stop there. Elsewhere you’ll find such world-class draws as a MATISSE exhibition, a BOOK FESTIVAL featuring top authors in town, a SOCIAL ENTERPRISE CONFERENCE, CONFERENCE RAFT and DUCK RACES, the visit of a WORLD CUP GOALKEEPER as ICT host REAL VILLADOLID, 2 outdoor SHAKESPEARE productions, and a quite breathtaking array of music - from X FACTOR stars to Bob Marley’s band THE WAILERS as part of that heavyweight Bella line-up - via all sorts of top Folk, Americana, Rock and Jazz - not least the excellent propect of seeing hot property THE LOW ANTHEM at Bogbain Farm... More inside as usual - and at:

HENRI MATISSE: DRAWING WITH SCISSORS LATE WORKS 1950-1954 @ Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, 07 Aug-06 Sep

W

e’ve told you before and you’d better believe we’ll tell you again that the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery is something of an unappreciated gem on our own doorstep. Further proof that you should check it out comes in the form of an exhibition by one of the very best artists of modern times. Indeed, Matisse pretty much set the benchmark for vivacious use of colour, something you can experience for yourself in this exhibition, on tour from London’s South Bank Centre. It features 35 lithographic prints of his famous cut-outs, produced towards the end of his life when he was confined to bed. His body may have been shackled, but his senses still soared as you’ll see from iconic works like The Snail and Blue Nudes. It’ll take your breath away. www.inverness.highland.museum

Workshops: EUGENIE VRONSKAYA If you’ve visited Eden Court in the last eighteen months, you’ll have noticed the gently curving wall of small portraits opposite the dining area. These head-shots of celebrities and local characters, each painted in forty five minutes, are the work of celebrated local artist EUGENIE VRONSKAYA, winner of the ICA Artist of the Year Award 2007. She famously made waves with the controversial piece “Self Portrait as a Man” at the Kilmorack Gallery in the same year. Now Vronskaya, who moved to Britain from Russia 20 yrs ago, is offering a small number of ART CLASSES from her private studio. “I was very lucky to have studied under some exceptional tutors at the Moscow Fine Art University and in London at the Royal College of Art. This cross-cultural education gave me a particular understanding of form, space and light; ways of seeing and ways of thinking about my art as well as basic skills. I believe that this insight is unique within the British context and I am delighted to now be in a position to pass on what I have learned”. There are two workshops over long weekends this year. The first, starting 10th September September, will concentrate on the human figure and feature two life models. The second, starting on 26th November will focus on portraiture. “Its about capturing a likeness but also the character of your subject and can be tremendously rewarding”, says Vronskaya, “Some people may wish to take both courses, while others will want to concentrate on one.. We work in small groups so that I can give each person individual attention.” What the artists say: “Loved the course. It was very motivating for professionals and equally for beginners.” Leonie Gibbs. “Eugenie is a really inspiring teacher. Her enthusiasm to impart her knowledge and skills to others and her patient encouragement and insight make one strive and achieve more than you could imagine possible. Her workshops are also great fun, I have done four to date and am hungry for more.” Judith Livingstone More about Eugenie’s workshops: Email: eugenie.vronskaya@googlemail.com or phone 01463 782975

ART > VARIOUS > Allan Macdonald paintings & Automata show... THE AUTOMATA EXHIBITION @ Nairn Museum, until Wed 25 Aug There’s something timelessly enchanting-and even a little unsettling-about the notion of automata – the mechanical objects endowed with life through an intricate series of internal mechanisms. Though most popular during their so-called Golden Age in Paris from 1860-1910, they still carry a magical beauty today as you can see from this exhibition of the very best in antique and contemporary pieces with twice weekly demonstrations of some of the rarer constructions. The duo behind it all is Michael and Maria, responsible for the UK’s only specialist automata restoration company which used to go under the name Automatomania. Ironically, it was the modern age that did for the name, with too many people finding it difficult to search for on Google, so it now goes under the rather fine moniker The House Of Automata. The exhibition is highly recommended, and read more about it all on their site: automatomania.co.uk

ALLAN MACDONALD: Until The Day Breaks @ Kilmorack Gallery, from 14 Aug [pictured: ‘Still Growing’] Allan MacDonald’s landscapes are being increasingly recognised and sought after by collectors throughout the country. His work has an almost spiritual feeling for the power of nature combined with a vast knowledge and feeling for colour and oil paint, and an ability to capture a divine almost magical instant in a landscape. There is, it has been pointed out, “something is his work that makes his seas endless and energetic and his mountains so mountainous, sometimes sinister and sometimes glowing with light. There is always something bigger than canvas and paint in MacDonald’s work”. This exhibition gathers together some of his best work from the past two years. We suggest you don’t miss. www.kilmorackgallery.co.uk 10

FILM

VUE FILMS SALT (FROM 18 AUG) In a curious case of art imitating life, or perhaps further proof that Hollywood is in cahoots with government agencies, Angelina Jolie stars as a CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy. Unlike Anna Chapman her character, Evelyn Salt, goes on the run using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative

to avoid

capture. Jolie can pretty much churn out these sort of roles in her sleep these days, but at least the flukily fortunate timing should give it a little more resonance than the usual hiding-by-numbers. Also this month KNIGHT AND DAY (FROM 04 AUG). Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz caught up in assassination attempt. More spies, but this one has been limply received in America. CATS AND DOGS 2: REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE (FROM 04 AUG). Follow up to the smash hit tale of feline/canine conflict. In 3D as every film has to be these days. STEP UP 3D (FROM 04 AUG). NYC streetdancers pitted against hip hop crews busting all their best moves. Spelbound have got nothing on this. In 3D? Obviously. THE SORCERERS APPRENTICE (FROM 11 AUG). Nicolas Cage is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis played by Alfred Molina. THE LAST AIRBENDER (FROM 11 AUG). Originally called Avatar apparently until that name got taken by some other low-budget thing. Anime inspired flick finds Aang (Noah Ringer) manipulating the elements. 3D? Tick. PIRANHA 3D (FROM 18 AUG). More 3D, this time a remake of the seventies flick about flesh-eating fish. THE EXPENDABLES (FROM 18 AUG). Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture (whose name sounds like a porn star clothing line) and Steve Austin, with cameo roles by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. About mercenaries trying to overthrow a South American dictator. What’s not to love? Is it in 3D? No!!! Boo! Not proper cinema then. GROWN UPS (FROM 25 AUG). Five friends reunite for a Fourth of July holiday weekend. They soon find out that they’re not all as mature as they make out to be. Starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade. See www.myvue.com for full Vue listings.

EDEN COURT FILMS THE ILLUSIONIST (21 AUG-02 SEP). Belleville Rendez-Vous is one of the finest animated films of recent years and though the director Sylvain Chomet is French, he’s relocated to Edinburgh where he’s set the follow-up (along with interludes in the Highlands and Islands). The Illusionist is based on an unmade screenplay by French comedy genius Jacques Tati and was a huge critical hit when it debuted at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Set in the 1950s it tells the story of an old-time magician who just wants to entertain, but is finding stage space very hard to come by in an ever changing world. Chomet’s gorgeous old-school style of animation is the perfect way to tell this story, and in his depiction of both the Highland landscape and the streets of Edinburgh, Scotland has rarely looked so dreamily beautiful. LEAVING (11-19 AUG). Kristen Scott Thomas is remarkable as adulterous wife who falls for her builder. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (10-12 AUG) THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE (26 AUG-16 SEP) First two parts of the film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy. The American version starring Daniel Craig is currently in development. See page 75 for full Eden Court listings.

INVERNESS BOOK FESTIVAL @ Eden Court, 12-15 Aug ■ The Inverness Book Festival is always one of the year’s most popular events (and you can read more about the full line up on page 40) with a host of guests and several events specifically for children and young people. What better to start with than a Big Bottom Hunt, the first picture book by storyteller LORI DON,, who began her performing career at Eden Court while a student. It’s all about finding a bottom print on the beach apparently and she’ll be reading from it on Thu 12 at noon. Later in the day at 2pm she’ll be giving a taste of her new book for slightly older children, Rocking Horse War. ■ MAIRI HEDDERWICK (pictured) is well known to Highland audiences as author and illustrator of the world famous Katie Morag books. She’s coming to the Festival on Fri 13 at 3pm to bring to life Katie’s adventures with Tiresome Ted, The Riddles, The New Pier, The Dancing Class and many more. ■ Described as Harry Potter meets Nightmare on Elm Street, Invisible Fiends: Mr Mumbles by BARRY HUTCHISON is a fantastically original and darkly funny new horror series about what happens when 12-year-old Kyle’s imaginary friend from childhood comes back to life looking for revenge on the boy who forgot him. Raggy Maggie is the second in the Invisible Friends series published this August. Go and hear Barry read from and talk about his work on Fri 13 (spookily) at 1pm.This event is best for children age 9 and over. With or without imaginary friends. ■ There are far more events than we can fit in here (including everything from Bookbug Sessions and turning Eden Court into a planetarium to pant-painting parties) so for full details go to the festival website at www.invernessbookfestival.co.uk

KIDS/FAMILIES > SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO > Free 4 Kids!! SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO @ Milton of Leys, 01-31 Aug At Eden Court this month there’s a production of Caledonia, the story of a crazy eighteenth century land grab scheme that almost bankrupted the nation. We’re not suggesting that any of the same impulses are at work with SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO, though it might apear rather startling – and brave – to be putting on such a thing in the middle of a recession. The event, the first of its kind in the UK, has had something of a troubled inception, but is finally ready to be unveiled with 52 houses at Milton of Leys created with the future in mind to showcase the latest ideas on design and sustainability to promote eco-friendly lifestyles, respectful of natural resources.

Irresistible interiors for many of the houses have been co-ordinated by top household names in modern design, while eleven gardens have been created under the direction of WAYNE HEMINGWAY of Hemingway Design and founder of iconic fashion label Red or Dead, themed to compliment the house designs. We’re glad to see that he’s come to his senses and softened his previous stance on the aesthetic beauty (or lack of it) of Inverness! The Expo has ‘something for everybody’ with events, interior design and the latest in garden design not to mention lots for budding house builders who want to learn more about new and greener techniques for their own home. On top of all that every day there’ll be something different to see and do – workshops, talks, stalls, performers, art and lots of fun activities all in and around the homes. And all young people of school age are invited to come along to Expo for free, with discounts for family season tickets. Check the website for all the latest news:

HIGHLAND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

HIGHLAND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA: 10th Anniversary Concert @ Eden Court One Touch, Sat 21 Aug 7.30pm Having provided top-class music for a decade now, the HIGHLAND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA will perform the debut of its tenth anniversary concert at Eden Court. Any event of this magnitude would simply have to include LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN, and he is represented here by his 2nd Symphony. Despite the widespread prejudice against his even-numbered symphonies, this is a majestic and stunning work. The orchestra will also perform MENDELSSOHN’s Hebridean Overture. Composed by Mendelssohn when he was under the spell of ‘Ossian’ doggerel, this is a piece of great beauty whose soaring majesty blots out the embarrassment of the source work. As well as these established classics, the Orchestra will also perform the debut of Concerto for Strings by the Caithness composer KATRINA GORDON as well as a suite of three movements based on the Inverness Song Book. This is a medley of pieces based on works by famous Scottish composers. www.eden-court.co.uk

PROM PRAISE @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 19 Aug 7.30pm Christian music has always been a curiosity in Britain. From Handel’s Zadok the Priest to Lonnie Donegan’s version of Michael Row the Boat Ashore, there is scarcely a mode which hasn’t been used to express our Christian heritage. PROM PRAISE at Eden Court theatre pays tribute to Britain’s curiously mixed forms of Christian music and also combines worship and a talk by CRAIG DYER, the director of the Christianity Explored Project.

MUSIC > CLUBBING > Kate Lawler, Belladrum Dance & more... MOTHER’S RUIN STAGE @ Belladrum Festival, Fri 06 & Sat 07 Aug Back again after last year’s rave reaction, the MOTHER’S RUIN dance stage will kick off with a HIGHLAND JUNGLISTS special with the Drum N Bass trio set sure to get the place jumping. A fresh injection of DJs featuring LED (RockNess DJ competition winners featuring Stuart Moffatt) ALAN GRANT, THUNDERCAT, PLANISFEAR and MASTER SHAKE will be bringing their own twists on the electro genre while SKINNYROCKET from Paris will unleash a distinctly Parisian techno sound. Audiolife DJ/ promoter ALAN MACPHERSON and producer/tech wizard KING MINOS return to Mother’s Ruin on Friday while producer/DJ PLEXUS comes out of hiding for Bella on the Saturday. The weekend will finish with a special set from ICA 2010 Best Club winners FILTH followed by a live set from WE SEE ALIENS (Robbie Dunsmore & Joystick Discoteque). There’s also a DJ set from none other than TOMMY REILLY (!), hitherto rather better known for his singing. Should be interesting. Get more details at www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk

HIGHLAND JUNGLISTS / TURBULENCE! @ Mad Hatters, Fri 30 Jul @ Flames, Sat 31 Jul @ Belladrum Festival 6/7 Aug @ Granary, Elgin, Fri 27 Aug Highland Junglists are mighty busy this month as not only are the trio playing the Mother’s Ruin stage at Bella (see elsewhere on this page), but they’re also hosting TURBULENCE! at Mad Hatters on 30 Jul (with guest DJs STEVE DELL and SUPERSTAR) and the TURBULENCE! FIRST BIRTHDAY BASH at Flames (Phoenix Bar) the next night on 31 Jul with DJs SILENT ASSASSIN, DROPZ and RABOON. You can also catch them at the Granary in Elgin on 27 Aug. Check out more of their mission to spread the drum’n’bass gospel at: www.facebook.com/highlandjunglists

LES PETITS PILOUS @ Ironworks, Sat 31 Jul LES PETITS PILOUS aka Anthony Ferrando & JeanPatrick Simonetti from Nice are best known for their hits “Wake Up” and “Jolie Fille”, but have also done remixes for Justice and Goose and garnered fans like Moby, Errol Alkan and Felix Da Housecat along the way. Their forthcoming “Bielle” looks like soundtracking the months ahead, so it’s a great time to catch them. Joining them will be WE SEE ALIENS (aka Joystick Discoteque & Robbie Dunsmore), who have played on bills with the likes of Cagedbaby, Justin Robertson and Funk D’Void. Also appearing on the night are EUAN WILLIAMSON and ROSS LYALL (Filth) plus Room 2 with POLYMATH / BUTTERSCOTCH / MASTER SHAKE. www. ironworksvenue.com

KATE LAWLER @ Ironworks, Sat 28 Aug We first caught Ms Lawler when she played the much missed Motion a couple of years back and found her to be not only enormously affable, but also a darn good DJ. And, for a moment at least, some of our preconceptions about stars of reality TV shows were blown away. She was actually a potential high flyer in the City on the IT side before TV stardom and a Big Brother win beckoned, but she’s always been hugely into music and has built a well-respected DJing career. This promises to be a proper summer club night with arms in the air compulsory. Don’t be scared by the picture! www.ironworksvenue.com

MUSIC > FOLK, ROOTS & WORLD > ... ALY BAIN & PHIL CUNNINGHAM @ Glen Urquhart Public Hall, Mon 02 Aug @ Eden Court Empire, Sat 28 Aug A couple of chances this month to see the most impressive and affable traditional music duo around. Even casual observers of the genre can’t have failed to notice from frequent television appearances how Phil’n’Aly are at the heart, both physically and emotionally of all that is dynamic about the genre. Always keen to encourage and collaborate with a whole new generation of performers and disparate musicians, the shows they perform as a duo are always a treat.

BLAZIN’ FIDDLES @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Fri 20 Aug Another essential fixture of the traditional music scene, the Blazers guarantee a joyous, exuberant night out and this, their first local gig for a little while should be as uplifting as ever. If you’ve never seen them live before, now’s the time to remedy the situation and see just how magnificently they’re taking sounds that are rooted in history into the 21st century.

MR MCFALL’S CHAMBER with MICHAEL MARRA @ Eden Court OneTouch, Tue 31 Aug A wonderful mixture of music from all over the world made all the more special by the presence of one of the country’s most legendary musicians in the form of MICHAEL MARRA. The sextet of Mr McFall’s Chamber play stuff as diverse as Argentinean tango, classicallyinfluenced Czech folk, 19th century Cuban salon music and accordion sounds from Finland, so expect your senses to be whirled across the globe. Having originally played with Marra at the legendary “None Of The Above” club night in Edinburgh, they found a perfect foil in his witty, poignant and finely observed songs. It’s a delicious collaboration and one you mustn’t miss.

PHILOMENA BEGLEY @ Mosset Tavern, Forres, 6.30pm The Grand Dame of Irish Country music always goes down a storm when she plays these parts, attracting audiences right across the generations. While she’s always been untouchably popular in her homeland, she’s also held in high regard by country aficionados on both sides of the Atlantic and this should be something of a celebratory affair. Mosset Tavern is a fine Forres venue and while you’re there you might want to check out 26 its excellent restaurant.

POKEY LA FARGE [main picture] @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sun 22 Aug The magnificently named POKEY LA FARGE, who has the demeanour of someone straight out of Deadwood, brings his band from Missouri to reprise the country tinged sounds that were such a hit at this year’s Celtic Connections and wowed audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe. Highly Recommended.

GAELIC VOICES @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 07 Aug This is a collaboration between Chromatic Voices, Gaelic-speaking poets and contemporary and traditional musicians from across the country, inspired by the link between Gaelic myths and life in modern-day Scotland. Combining the visuals of drama, the choral aspects of song and live music, it’s a fascinating cultural hybrid.

THE LOW ANTHEM @ Bogbain Farm, Sat 28 Aug Quite a coup for Bogbain as sublime Americana merchants from providence, Long Island, THE LOW ANTHEM come to show just how gorgeous the genre can be. Their most critically acclaimed album had the splendid title “Oh My God Charlie Darwin” and hopefully they’ll be playing tracks from both that and their equally impressive “What The Crow Brings”. Expect an array of unusual instruments to be brought into proceedings, particularly the always irresistible singing saw and, for the show-stopping This God Damn House, audience interaction involving mobile phones. Great stuff.

THE WISHING WELL @ The Loft, Forres, Fri 27 Aug Lush orchestral combination of folk, pop and rock all the way from Melbourne. Well worth investigating.

ADELAIDE’S CAPE @ Mad Hatters, Fri 27 Aug Musical incarnation of Edinburgh born, but South based singer songwriter Sam Taylor and the band can number anything from just him to a seven-piece. Often compared with the likes of Mumford & Sons, so if that’s the thing that floats your boat, get along and see why he’s highly tipped for big things in the year ahead.

azz? Nice. Swedish jazz? Er, very nice. THE SWEDISH JAZZ KINGS are widely regarded as some of the best exponents in the world of Chicago jazz of the twenties and thirties. Formed in 1985 and based on the long partnership of TOMAS ORNBERG and BENT PERSSON (pic), the SJK began as a studio band that recreated and recorded the music of Clarence Williams and since then they’ve brought together many of Europe’s top musicians, performing and recording with world-class guest soloists such as Kenny Davern, Roy Williams, Joe Muranyi and Bob Barnard. Unsurprisingly they’re in great demand for jazz festivals the world over, particularly appealing to fans of music by Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and the like. If jazz started to go wrong in your book once noodling took over, this could be the perfect chance to celebrate its glory days.

MUSIC > RETRO ROCK & POP TOO! > DEAN FRIEDMAN @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 05 Aug Dean Friedman is the only person ever to have had a hit with the word “Paramus” in it, being the setting for “Ariel”, a tribute to his girlfriend in his hometown of Paramus, New Jersey which topped the charts Stateside in 1977. While that was his big US smash, he’s perhaps better remembered here by folk of a certain generation for “Lucky Stars”, his duet with Denise Marsa. So a sort of one-and-a-half hit wonder then, who also dabbled in writing for TV commercials, and even wrote the soundtrack to a movie called I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle, but he’s also continued to pen songs for the last thirty years and his live shows are apparently rather fine. Perhaps he’ll even tell us a bit more about Paramus.

ROD CLEMENTS @ The Loft, Forres, Fri 20 Aug Co-founder of Geordie folk-rockers Lindisfarne, Clements has also worked with such luminaries as Thea Gilmore, Ralph McTell (including playing on “Streets Of London”) and Bert Jansch in a career that spans over forty years. Plenty of back catalogue to draw on then so if you want to see someone who’s been an integral part of the development of British music, then get along.

THE ELVIS YEARS @ Eden Court Empire, Wed 25 Aug We wonder if there’ll still be tribute shows to Elvis Presley in a hundred years’ time? Judging by the popularity of anything King-related, we wouldn’t be at all surprised. This one has always been one of the biggest hits when playing at Eden Court, so there are bound to be plenty of fans welcoming back World Champion Elvis impersonator MARIO KOMBOU. Over forty hits take in every stage of Presley’s career from the early days of That’s Alright Mama and Jailhouse Rock, through the glorious ’68 Comeback Special and the swansong of Vegas.

WESTLIFE @ Cawdor Castle, Sat 28 Aug, 5pm It’s going to be quite a couple of days at the historic Cawdor Castle. The day after the X Factor stars come to town (see above), it’s the turn of the all-conquering Westlife to unleash their bucketloadselling pop. You can expect a professional, polished show and more hits than you can shake a stick at as the group demonstrate why they’re the boy band dons. The MacDonald Brothers reprise their support role from the previous night and there’s also a chance to see Louis Walsh’s new girl band, Wonderland featuring former Hollyoaks regular Jodi Albert, Sharon Condon, Corrina Durran, Leigh Learmont and Kasey Smith. They’ve been supporting Westlife on the current tour and are due to release their debut album later this year. CK Events director Kenny Cameron says, “The addition of The MacDonald Brothers and Wonderland ensure that the Westlife concert will be a great day out for all the family. The gates are open at 5pm and we would encourage ticket holders to get through to Cawdor early so that they can enjoy the full show.”

STARS FROM THE X FACTOR @ Cawdor Castle, Fri 27 Aug When one of the JEDWARD twins - we’re never quite sure which knacked his leg on live TV the other week, we thought their appearance at this show might be in doubt, but their management company have assured us that they’re eager to play and, while they’re at it, promote their new single, a cover of Blink 182’s “All The Small Things”. Oh joy. They’re joined on the bill by loads of favourites from the show, namely STACEY SOLOMON, JAMIE “AFRO” ARCHER, DANYL JOHNSON and RUTH LORENZO with relative veterans THE MACDONALD BROTHERS as special guests. Just how many of them will still be working in five years time will show whether the TV programme is a triumph for talent spotting or a ruthless corporate assembly line, but there’s no denying frenzy that will fill the air as, for the moment at least, their stars burn brightly.

the

MR HUDSON SOUNDSYSTEM @ Ironworks, Fri 20 Aug

Birmingham popster whose Straight No Chaser debut album skipped across genres from R’n’B, dance and reggae to chunky stadium rock with unabashed delight. Having started off making electronica, he’s widened his horizons, aided by a facility for being able to play just about any instrument he picks up, much in the manner of the late lamented Roy Castle. Except poppier. In soundsystem form, obviously.

MUSIC > CD REVIEWS > Shutter, Coca Tenorio & more... SHUTTER - Pillars (2010) So, half a decade together and finally Shutter get round to putting out their debut album. Actually, while such a long wait may have frustrated many fans, it’s probably turned out to be a good move since the quartet of Matt, Pete, Will and James have honed and developed their sound to such an extent that they exude casual confidence, totally at ease with marshalling the mood and tempo of their instrumentals from shimmery languor to full on metallic assault. Tracks like Sedona, Superhero Movie Music, New Starts and Sulaco are standouts, but the whole is impressive. Mogwai comparisons will obviously still get brought up and not without justification, but we prefer to think of them as the aural equivalent of the Spanish midfield. The challenge now is to perhaps ration their local gigs and decide whether they’re serious about aiming for a few stratospheres. They’ve certainly got the armoury. COCA TENORIO - Todo Transito (Coca) The title means “everything moves” and you could never accuse Tenorio of standing still. Dividing her time between Ecuador and Inverness, she actually manages to find some sort of link, particularly in the echoes of wide open spaces that drift on the margins of the vibrant South American rhythms. Check out more of her music (and clothes designs!) at www.cocatenorio.com ART OF NOISE - Influence (ZTT/Union Square) Elsewhere in this month’s issue you can read about a book charting the history of one of the country’s most influential record labels, Factory, but in terms of iconography and invention, ZTT wasn’t far behind. And, importantly, it managed to accrue a fair few hit singles. Primarily thanks to Frankie Goes To Hollywood, but Art Of Noise certainly made their contribution and it’s their legacy that perhaps is sonically the most enduring as this double CD of hits and unreleased tracks demonstrates. The likes of Moments In Love, Closer To The Edit and Beat Box (Diversion 10) still sound as fresh today as when they were released twenty years ago and unreleased tracks like Cassandra, The Invention Of Love and a welter of new mixes are little jewels. KELE - The Boxer (Wichita) When Bloc Party first burst onto the scene they were the perfect development for Britpop, taking a tired genre and wrenching it through some interesting new outlines. That for those of us old enough to remember, they drew upon a blueprint first etched by the crypto-funk thrill of Gang Of Four was merely proof that they were looking back over all the right shoulders. Unfortunately their initial promise rather withered in front of our eyes, so it’s pleasing that frontman Kele Okereke’s solo project manages to rediscover that vigour, rooted in dance throbs and suggesting that his best may be yet to come after all. MILLIMETRE - 13 Homes (Orectic) Millimetre aka Terence J. McGaughey has been compared with Pet Shop Boys, A R Kane and Robert Wyatt, a trio of acts spanning three generations but all sharing a distinctively ravishing awkwardness. While it might be a little hyperbolic to suggest that Millimetre can take its place at such an influential top table, it certainly seems to be developing into something special. This is Terence’s fourth album and often comes across like some sort of dreamy soundtrack for a slightly unsettling road movie, albeit one where most roads tend to lead to the heart of the city. Urban isolation meets quietly broken hearts with no little panache. MITCHELL MUSEUM - The Peters Port Memorial Service (Electra French) Delightfully unshackled pop imbued with the spirit of Flaming Lips and Animal Collective from a shadowy Glasgow quartet whose vocalist Cammy used to live on Benbecula (hence the album’s title). Warning Bells is the obvious hit in the making, but We Won 2nd Prize, Tiger Heartbeat and take The Tongue Out show that they’ve got far more up their curiously fashioned sleeves. TIRED PONY- The Place We Ran From (Fiction) Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody has never seemed much more than a man determined to suck the soul from any guitar rock possibilities but on this project he’s pulled in REM’s Peter Buck, Editors’ Tom Smith, M Ward & Zooey Deschanel (She and Him) and others for by far the best thing he’s ever done, drawing on the spirit of Wilco, Lambchop and Bonnie Prince Billy. Snow Patrol still suck, but this is rather nice. REM- Fables Of The Reconstruction (Capitol/I.R.S) Coincidentally, Buck reappears this month, this time in his day job as a remastered version of one of REM’s finest moments is supplemented by loads of unreleased demos and sleeve notes by Buck himself. Songs like Feeling Gravity’s Pull, Can’t Get There From here and Wendell Gee can still give the young whippersnappers what for and you sense this one might get even stronger with age. 34

SPECIALS > VARIOUS > Ducks to Social Enterprise!… THE GREAT RIVER NESS RAFT & DUCK RACE @ River Ness, Sat 28 Aug

Last year’s event was scuppered by inclement conditions (who’d have thought such a thing could happen in the Highlands?) so the organisers have already pencilled in a replacement date of 11 Sep in case of foul weather. Hopefully it won’t be needed and the last Saturday of August will see the four-person crews on a traditional array of rafts with varying degrees of technological prowess racing down the river. The races are divided into two categories: Commercial and Club. All entrants are encouraged to decorate their rafts and there is a prize for the most original and humorous entry. The best decorated rafts then form a procession around the City Centre and back to the River Ness for the start of the races. The races themselves start at the Fisherman’s car park beside Bught Park and race downriver to the finish which is at the Greig Street pedestrian bridge. Rafts are taken out of the river at Friars Shott, near the Waterfront Bar, rather conveniently since The Waterfront has very kindly offered to provide soup and sandwiches to all competitors. The last raft race is followed by the popular Duck Race. Tickets for the numbered plastic ducks can be bought for £1 each from CHILDREN 1ST by phoning 01463 794477. www.children1st.org.uk

MOY HIGHLAND FIELD SPORTS FAIR @ Moy Estate, Fri 06 & Sat 07 Aug The fair offers a diversity of entertainments and activities for all of the family, from crèche facilities to archery. The emphasis is on field sports activities with competitions in fly casting, gun dog handling and clay pigeon shooting. Activities in the main ring differ from year to year but you may see gun dog or fly-casting demonstrations, pipe bands, falconry displays, and much more. Tickets for the event cost £10 per person - children under 16 are free and so is the car parking. www.moyfieldsportsfair.co.uk

BLACK ISLE SHOW @ Mannsfield Showground, Muir of Ord, Wed 04 & Thu 05 Aug We bang on about music festivals and the like, but when it comes to attracting the masses, this, the largest agricultural show in the North of Scotland takes some beating. It’s been running since 1836 and a visit forms a part of just about every local’s childhood, attracting regulars year after year. If you’ve never been then be prepared for joining almost 30,000 people in experiencing livestock parades, trade stands, food and craft fairs and a fairground spread over 40 acres. The full programme is still being finalised but head to the website for further details. www.blackisleshow.info

HISEZ CONFERENCE @ Centre For Health Science, Fri 27 Aug AKA the Highlands and Islands Social Enterprise Zone Conference with this year’s theme being “Moving Forward And Growing”. Don’t think it’s all jargon though as it provides an opportunity to meet Social Enterprises from right across the area and connect with people who can help you find out how to access new markets or funding. There’ll be a Social Enterprise Market with stalls selling local produce and, best of all, the very special guest speaker is JOHN BIRD, founder of The Big Issue and a man who’s always got something interesting to say in the most forthright manner. www.hisezconference.co.uk

SPECIALS/TALK > BOOK FESTIVAL > Highlights... 2010 INVERNESS BOOK FESTIVAL @ Eden Court, Thu 12–Sun 15 Aug This is the seventh Inverness Book festival, but for the first time it’s being held in the summer rather than autumn. It’s an interesting repositioning of the event in your cultural life, but festival director BRID MCKIBBEN has ensured there are enough interesting and diverse guests to ensure that you’ll be getting more than enough to read to last you through the winter months. The festival is packed with fascinating events, climaxing with KEN KELMAN’s now legendary Pub Quiz in the Newsroom Bar on the Saturday night and you could pretty much choose any event at random and be guaranteed something interesting, but here are some of our personal prospective highlights:

LEVI ROOTS Thu 12, 5pm, OneTouch Mr Reggae Reggae Sauce who wowed the Dragon’s Den and turned a kitchen recipe into a phenomenon. Of course, if we were treated like adults and allowed to have a Sainsbury’s here we’d be able to sample his product rather than having to rely on getting it at Subway. Perhaps he’ll bring some with him when he comes to talk about his ace recipe book Levi Roots’ Food For Friends and a career that’s encompassed not just entrepreneurship and cookery, but also singing for Nelson Mandela and performing with James Brown.

WHISKY TASTING with IAN BUXTON Thu 12, 8pm, MacLean Room The author of the informative and witty 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die has little time for the snobbery and marketing gimmickry that pervades much of the whisky world, preferring instead just to give advice on what you should try. As former Marketing Director of Glenmorangie, he’s got twenty years’ experience and in 1991 was elected keeper of the Quaich which is not some sort of Harry Potter accolade, but rather the highest honour in the whisky industry. Drams are included in the ticket price. Hoorah!

ALISTAIR MOFFAT Fri 13, 6.30pm, OneTouch Moffat’s book The Highland Clans is a compelling and accessible history of Scottish clans, their leaders and of years of rivalry. It is told with a fluency and freshness which offers a new insight into the much recounted tales of Culloden and the Clearances. Many claims of the Scottish Gaelic nation arriving here from Central Asia and the Caucuses have been met with derision but Alistair introduces an air of scientific truth through the findings of recent DNA studies. Alistair gently mocks the invented traditions of the last 200 years such as adopting the tartan as a clan uniform, the pretentious ‘Highlanding’ of the whole of Scotland, high society’s adoption of the reel and the sword-dance while “all about the north and west of Scotland an original culture was being scattered to the wind like thistle seeds”.

…at Armed Forces Day: Making History by Going Home... ALISTAIR URQUHART Sat 14, 6.30pm, OneTouch. For most of his life Urquhart has never mentioned the horrors of being held captive by the Japanese during WW2 and sent to build the Burma to Siam Railway aka Hellfire Pass. He never even told his wife although memories of the horrors often forced him to sleep in an armchair. Eventually he decided to write his memoirs and The Forgotten Highlander has become a best seller. He’s coming to tell more of his incredible story.

KEVIN MACNEIL Sun 15, 2pm, OneTouch MacNeil’s debut The Stornoway Way was described as “Trainspotting meets Whisky Galore” and his new novel The Method Actor’s Guide To Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde looks like being just as intriguing. Telling the tale of a young thespian in Edinburgh who has a bike crash and lives his life through first egotism then selflessness it takes many of the themes of Stevenson’s original and examines through a 21st century prism. He’s also holding a Creative Writing Workshop on Sat 14 at noon so book your place now.

GRACE MAXWELL/EDWYN COLLINS Sun 15, 7pm OneTouch For us, this is the highlight of the whole festival. Partner and onetime manager of Edwyn Collins, Grace not only experienced Edwyn’s rise to fame, but also had to deal with his life threatening illnesses and arduous road to recovery. Her autobiographical account of her and Collins’ life together, “Falling And Laughing: The Restoration Of Edwyn Collins” is a marvellous insight delivered with Grace’s trademark wit and she’ll be talking to NICKY MARR about some of the stories behind it. Best of all the night will conclude with an acoustic performance from Edwyn himself. Should be a brilliant night. For full details of all the festival events go to www.invernessbookfestival.co.uk

OTHER SPECIALS: TOP DOGS DAY OUT @ The Hay Field, Glenmore, Sun 01 Aug Back for its fifth year, you can come and register your dog for an agility course, displays, quizzes (the owners rather than the dogs presumably) and all sorts of canine high jinks, or simply watch all the fun. Joint event with Forestry Commission Scotland. 01479 873914

HISTORIC WHEELS CLUB ANNUAL RALLY @ Brodie Castle, Sun 08 Aug ALVIS CLASSIC CAR RALLY @ Cawdor Castle, Sun 15 Aug The recent Vintage Car Rally in Inverness gave people the chance to see some gorgeous old vehicles and you didn’t even need to be a petrolhead to appreciate their appeal. These two rallies are perhaps geared rather more to devotees but you can expect them to be just as much fun. And conclusively prove that old cars are good and new cars aren’t.

SPORT > FOOTBALL & RALLYING > New challenges…

SPORT

HIGHLAND FOOTBALL @ Ross County - Scottish Division 1 @ Inverness Caledonian Thistle - Scottish Premier League The excitement of last season’s Highland football is going to take some matching with ROSS COUNTY so close to glory in the Cup (while mastering the Jabulani rather more effectively than any of the national teams in South Africa) and INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE embarking on a magnificent post-Xmas run that earned them promotion with some ease. This season should see County concentrate on a push for promotion, while Caley Thistle will be looking to maintain the impetus and avoid any relegation worries. With that in mind they’ve made several summer signings including goalie MAX JOHNSTON and Israeli forward GIL BLUMANSHTEIN while offering a trial to former Arsenal youth player SAMUEL OJI. They couldn’t have a much more exciting opening fixture than the visit of CELTIC, but before that there are a couple of tasty friendlies, against Spanish side REAL VALLADOLID on TUE 03 AUG and Belgians ROYAL ANTWERP four days later. Though they were relegated from la Liga last season, Valladolid include in their ranks the Paraguayan penaltysaving keeper (and national captain) Justo Villar as well as former Man Utd striker Manucho and ex Liverpool defender Antonio Barragan. Before all that they face QUEEN’S PARK at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in the first round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup on Sat 31 Jul. Let’s hope the season starts in style...

SPEYSIDE STAGES RALLY @ Various Locations, Sat 07 Aug Now in its thirteenth year, this is round six of the Hankook

Scottish Rally Championship and you can pay for car parking at the forest stages. Money raised goes to local organisations. The event uses some of Speyside’s finest forests for and locations used in the past include Clashindarroch, Bin, Whiteash, Ordiquish, Rosarie, Teinland, and Monaughty. The event also uses a super special stage in the COOPER PARK, right in the centre of Elgin. The 0.7 mile tarmac stage provides an interesting challenge for drivers and easy access for spectators, just a minute’s walk away from the town centre. For more details see www.speyside-stages.co.uk

SPORT > ENDURANCE EVENTS > ...all for charity... WOLFTREK (picture below) @ Cairngorm, Sat 07 & Sun 08 Aug

A

n increasingly popular event for those wishing to test themselves against the elements as well as raising money for charity, the WOLFTREK is now in its third year, with teams from all across the UK taking part along a stunning route packed with diverse terrain, landscapes and wildlife. Hiking from sea level to the heart of the Cairngorm Mountains, the ‘WolfPack’ will set off from historic Dallas Dhu Distillery in Forres, before venturing through spectacular Highland countryside, including ancient pine forest, sparkling lochs and breathtaking mountain passes. Uniquely, participants will also encounter the eerie and remote Dava Moor overnight, passing by the ruined castle of the medieval tyrant the Wolf of Badenoch, who lends his name to the event and was last seen playing chess with the devil! The final stage of the trek will see participants tackle the twisting trail up Cairngorm Mountain to conclude the experience with a roaring reception at its ski station, which features the UK’s highest bar and boasts incredible views over the alpine valley below. Whilst the most adventurous will have the opportunity to tackle the whole 45-mile trek – which will involve undertaking a section of the course through the night – the challenge has also been broken down into three, 15 mile stages, which can be tackled as a team relay effort. There is also an option to sample a “bite-sized” 17 mile version of the trek by completing the Midnight March, from Forres to the shores of ghostly Lochindorb. It’s all in aid of the WildHearts charity, which provides micro-loans and business training to people living in poverty, so to sign up for a very good cause go to www. wilddayout.com, call 01667 455849 or email info@wilddayout.com

WALK TEN @ Beaufort Castle, Inverness, Sat 04 Sep, 6pm Not quite as ruggedly elemental as the WolfTrek, but just as rewarding and again for a very good cause, in this case Marie Curie Nurses. The WALK TEN event is set within the grounds of the picturesque and historic Beaufort Castle, situated 12 miles west of Inverness. The walk grants exclusive access to this privately owned estate, making the best possible use of the extensive grounds and the magnificent views of the castle itself. The event offers something for every walker, with riverside and woodland walking, open country and arable land. There is also a host of interesting features along the route, such as the summer house, tree house and sculptured gardens. This is the perfect opportunity to experience a wonderful evening of walking and celebration in this most unique and exclusive of locations. To register call 0870 034 0040 Or go to www.mariecurie.org.uk

LOCH NESS 360 @ Loch Ness, Sun 15 Aug Another opportunity to battle the great outdoors for a good cause, in this case by cycling around Loch Ness to raise funds for Marie Curie, Clic Sargent and Birchwood Highland. Email: info@lochness360.com WOLFTREK - FINISH LINE!

t’s great to see that at last Ironworks is establishing a reputation for putting on more than just music shows. Elsewhere on this page you can read about CAGE FIGHTING at the venue, while there’s a rake of COMEDY stuff coming up that we’ll be telling you more about in forthcoming months. For one night only however, you can get some tips on battling the undead as DR DALE SESLICK and his crack team of specialists provide you with a “one shop, whistle stop tour through the world of zombie survival techniques”. There are Q & A sessions, plenty of useful advice and practical solutions for warding off those pesky extras from the Thriller video. It’s virtually a public information service! ironworksvenue.com

THE LADY BOYS OF BANGKOK @ Eden Court Empire, Wed 04/Thu 05 Aug, 8pm The Fantasy and Feathers Tour 2010 if you please, though we’ve an inkling a whole heap of lonely crofters will have marked it in their diary already. And with good reason, cos it’s a tremendous spectacle, this time featuring more than 400 new costumes and “some devilishly dishy choreography...mixing the heady spice of Bangkok nights with the showgirl glamour of Las Vegas”. The “showgirls”, as the name of the troupe kind of reveals, are in fact young fellas, though their flamboyant elegance is such that they even seem to have successfully disarmed the harumphy down-with-this-sort-of-thing brigade. Last time they came to Eden Court they were a huge success so tickets for this one are bound to sell out in the twinkle of an impeccably made-up eye. Don’t miss it! www.eden-court.co.uk

BATTLE IN THE GLEN @ Ironworks, Sat 14 Aug Testosterone ahoy! It’s time for a bit of Mixed Martial Arts, or cage fighting as you might know it, with contestants utilizing everything from wrestling and judo to Mauy Thai kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. All in an eight-sided cage. Corporate seating available from £35 per person with access to balcony, private bar and buffet. Ooof! Yaargh! Kapow! Etc www.ironworksvenue.com

THEATRE

THEATRE > NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND > Caledonia... CALEDONIA @ Eden Court Empire, Fri 13-Mon 16 Aug

I

f you saw the TV dramas The Trial Of Tony Blair and A Very Social Secretary (about David Blunkett), you’ll know that playwright ALISTAIR BEATON has a deft way with political satire. Now in a major new show for the National Theatre – and being staged here before moving to Edinburgh – he’s turned his attention to one of the most curious episodes in Scottish history, the so-called ‘Darien Disaster’. William Paterson was a financial adventurer at the beginning of the eighteenth century who devised one of the most daring and disastrous speculations of all time. His plan was to found a Scottish colony on Darien in Central America and turn Scotland, one of the poorest nations in Europe, into an imperial power. He invited the public to invest. And they did – in a big way. Within weeks a vast proportion of the nation’s wealth had been subscribed. But it all went horribly wrong and within just a few years the impoverished and demoralised Scots ended up signing the 1707 Treaty of Union and giving up independence. Inspired by documents, journals, letters, songs and poems of the period, Beaton has created a work that is both a tribute to heroic ambition and a darkly witty take on the deceptions and self-deceptions of rich and poor alike. Caledonia is directed by ANTHONY NEILSON, the Scottish writer/director whose award-winning work for the Edinburgh International Festival has included the National Theatre of Scotland’s Realism and The Wonderful World of Dissocia. Once it hits Edinburgh it’s bound to start picking up accolades by the hatful, so be the first to see what the inevitable fuss is all about. www.eden-court.co.uk

which to witness the delights of open air theatre than

oray Art Centre’s renaissance summer continues with a production by Charioteer Theatre in collaboration with Piccolo Teatro di Milano that sheds light on one of Michelangelo’s lesser known talents, that of poet. Presumably something he dabbled in during the odd half minute when he wasn’t busy excelling as painter, sculptor, architect and engineer! In fact his poems show great sensitivity and passion as you’ll be able to find out here, alongside other poets of the same era Ludovico Ariosto and Francesco Petrarca. There’s plenty more renaissance-related stuff going on at the venue over the next few months, so check out their website for details:

Mobile Conch Shell visits Highland Communities

A

rtists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich are launching ‘The Conch Sound Studio’ at Scotland’s Housing Expo on 1st Aug at Milton of Leys. ‘The Conch Sound Studio’ will be an exciting mobile structure in the shape of a sea shell made of local larch where people can sit, listen and discuss ideas of how communities can survive and thrive in current times.

Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich make work that uses sculpture, performance, video and socially engaged practice to invite participants to connect with their work to re-imagine the world they inhabit and playfully open up spaces where the possible and the actual come together. “We are very excited about making this a new artwork, and to be working with local writers and makers including Angus Dunn, David Manson and Matt Stevenson. Responding to Scotland’s first Housing Expo opening, we’re delighted to be working with commissioning partners Inverness Old Town Art (IOTA).” The Conch Sound Studio aims to seek out hope and positive transformation within a growing climate of fear and an increasingly apocalyptic vision for the survival of society (and our Planet). After the Expo, the Conch Sound Studio will travel to Communities across the Highlands and act as a meeting point to bring people together to discuss ideas of community, survival, change and transformation.

SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO runs from 01-31 Aug at Milton of Leys, Inverness

EATING OUT:

The Review: CHAPTER ONE 39 HIGH ST FORRES 01309 671682 Much as we like to cling to Inverness like a baby to its favourite blanket, sometimes it’s good to see what might be out there past the city limits, so we clamber onto the ICA charabanc and make for the rather charming little town of Forres. Actually, we say “little”, but it’s much larger than you might have thought if you’ve only ever glimpsed it from the corner of your eye as you take the roundabout on the outskirts of town. In fact it has a thriving high street, complete with health food shops and alternative medicine outlets all over the place, suggesting a local population a tad more bohemian than you might expect. And there are flowers absolutely everywhere, perhaps unsurprisingly for a place that

has won countless Britain In Bloom accolades, the whole making for both a vibrant community and also exactly the sort of old-fashioned main thoroughfare that the corporate multinationals would love to see wiped from the face of the earth. And it’s in Forres that we choose to dine, at CHAPTER ONE. Just across the road from Murdoch’s the Butchers, purveyors apparently of the World Champion Scotch Pie and a host of other meaty delights. Chapter One looks equally enticing and impressively busy for Thursday lunchtime. These aren’t tourists either, but locals and regulars, and we’re soon to find out just why it’s so popular, offering as it does remarkable value for money and a high standard of cooking. It’s the latest enterprise of John McCruden Ex of Candles in Culloden and more recently having worked down South.

Now he’s back in a great location, giving something of an object lesson in how to run a neighbourhood restaurant. The place is modern without being gimmicky, an L-shaped space made to look even larger thanks to judicious use of mirrors and a sense of classiness without being stuffy. The menu reflects the informality of proceedings with an expansive array of stuff on offer, varying from “snacks” to full blown meals, though we’re soon to find that the notion of small portions isn’t countenanced here. So one of our party orders Soup And A Sandwich (just £4.95 for the two) only to be presented with a bowl of deliciously flavoursome Cauliflower Soup and a large Coronation Chicken Sandwich accompanied by gorgeous chips oven-baked in their skins. No skimping here. As we roam across 55 the menu, another

of our party has a starter of Hand Made Goats Cheese and Pepper Ravioli with Parmesan and Pesto. Again a substantial portion, pretty much pushing the boundaries of the concept of starter, but there are no complaints about the quality of the cooking and the combination of flavours is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. For my starter, I plump for the intriguing sounding Warm Fruit Wood Smoked Salmon, which turns out to be lovely thin slices of the fish served with crisp pan fried Gnocchi and (rather too substantial) salad with citrus dressing. A nice combination showing an imagination in the kitchen that’s present throughout the meal. For mains, one of us goes for something from the extensive pizza selection, opting for Mediterranean Chargrilled Vegetable (delights such as Tuscan Sausage & Sweet Onion, Creamed Leeks, Prawn & Scallop and Cajun Chicken also being on offer). It goes without saying that it’s

56

not exactly titchy, obviously handmade and even including asparagus. Made only with Italian flour and extra virgin olive oil, it has a rustic authenticity that makes it taste every bit as good as it looks. There’s more asparagus on another main course, Saffron & Char-grilled Artichoke Risotto Cake, a vibrant green and cooked to perfection. The notion of making risotto into a cake is an unusual one and this time maybe it really is too large, even for the Scottish eyes/stomach axis, but it tastes good. The accompanying spicy courgette is, rather unusually, deep fried in a slightly sweet batter - ensuring this a dish that really combines a host of bold flavours. For my main I have the simple sounding Breast Of Chicken and am not entirely unsurprised to find it coming with all manner of additions. The breast itself is wrapped in Parma ham and covered in mozzarella, keeping it deliciously moist, but it’s served with immaculately

cooked broccoli and a slightly less successful mashed potato tartlet topped with some kind of moussey creation. It doesn’t really add much to the dish and might perhaps be just that one step too far. Particularly since we’re now so full that we have to wait a good thirty seconds before bellowing, “Puddings? OF COURSE we want puddings!” Our friendly waitress seems almost as excited about the concept of the desserts on offer as we are and we soon find out why. Midway through conversation, jaws suddenly drop and little whimpers of “what the...?” rend the air as the puds are brought out, revealing themselves to be baroque creations that wouldn’t be out of place at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. First up, the relatively simple Crème Brûlée , complete with magnificently executed crispy shell and beautifully flavoured with spiced rum and banana. It’s served with tremendous home-made ice cream and a shot of fruit puree, accompaniments for all

of our desserts. Next, the waitress’ own recommendation, Chapter One Meringue Nest Filled with Banana and Toffee Fudge. It’s the sort of nest spacious enough to accommodate an eagle and you get a sugar rush just looking at it. That said, it’s all polished off in double quick time, a testament to its yumminess. The nest may be impressive, but it’s nothing compared to the rococo flamboyance of the Chapter One Mile High Stawberry Cheese Cake, which spirals skyward with bold abandon. The “cake” element is merely an afterthought to swirl of cream and cream cheese possessed of fine fluffiness as it soars high above us. You couldn’t eat two of them, but one seems just about manageable. Bear in mind that each of the puds comes in at a mere £3.75, remarkable value considering the skill of their creation, something perfectly emphasised by the piece de resistance, a selection of NINE – count ‘em - Mini Desserts. That’s nine different, remarkably executed desserts, including éclairs, tarts and even a miniature sponge, with ice cream, fruit and puree for just £3.75. If that’s manageable financially, it puts just about every other restaurant in Britain to shame. By now our heads are positively fizzing with sugar and there is absolutely, positively no more room in our stomachs, not even for a wafer thin mint, so we waddle outside for a short constitutional, really rather hoping to come across a comfy armchair. Noticing the menu outside we see a rake of equally enticing dishes on Chapter One’s evening menu and the news that they serve a Sunday roast, something which we imagine is a thing of some wonder. We’ve already booked our table for next time and wholeheartedly suggest you do the same. A little gem, just like Forres itself. Total for FOUR (exc. drinks) £39.43

Permanent Cosmetics

from Janet Mill at Permanent Cosmetics What I love about semi-permanent cosmetics is how it simply and naturally enhances the features you have. Very few people have perfectly symmetrical faces and with just a little adjustment, you can enhance and improve anyone’s looks and make the most of what you have been given. Eyebrows are such an important facial feature and they really do frame the whole face and especially the eyes. From personal experience, I know that having well shaped eyebrows gives you confidence. continued over >>

PERMANENT COSMETICS continued >> If they are sparse, pale or badly shaped, they can drag your face down and make your eyes look tired. However, with just a few minor adjustments and adding a little lift to the tails, it really does give the impression of a mini-face lift without the surgery and at a fraction of the cost. It is a real fashion statement now to have well defined eyebrows and also fuller looking lips. Lips lose their colour and definition over the years and with just the addition of a very natural looking line, it can increase fullness, giving a more youthful appearance. The lip line colour is then blended into the lips so that it looks very natural and doesn’t just leave a sharp line. Eyes are the window to the soul,so they say and therefore worth making the most of. Every individual has totally unique coloured eyes and having an eyeliner or subtle eyelash enhancement in a complimentary colour, can really bring out the individual beauty of your eyes. Eyeliner doesn’t always have to be black or b rown, but what about a beautiful deep purple, or torquoise green? This summer, let’s make the most of what we have and put a little more colour and definition into our lives. After all, you are worth it as Cheryl Cole says!

Making the most of you. Create Your Own Style from Helen Burchell

It’s a common problem these days. You don’t want to go to the party dressed like a tramp, but you don’t want to pay a three figure sum at the dress shop. It’s a real dilemma – go bankrupt or go naked? There is an answer- try not to panic- but, believe it or not, you can make a stunning dress yourself. Yes, all by yourself. Now the dress shops don’t want you to know this because it’s in their interest to make you doubt your own abilities. But trust me, you can do it. Maybe you’ll need a little help at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of it and it’s fun. There’s nothing like making a beautiful dress (like the one in the picture) out of fabric that’s cost you £15, that fits like a glove and, when you’ve put some extra beading on it yourself, you’ll know that nobody else on earth will have the same dress. >>

[ health • style • beauty • fitness ] >> So what’s involved? Well simply go to the pattern websites (such as Vogue, Simplicity, New Look, Butterick or Burda) and have a look at what they have to offer. For your first creation don’t go for anything too complicated. You can get great hints and tips and instructional videos on YouTube for things like putting zips in and other complicated stuff. For great fabrics all you need to do these days is scour the internet for unique and beautiful printed and plain silks, satins, chiffons, organzas and loads more at a range of prices. The only real piece of information you need to know is this: a sewing pattern is a lot like a wild animal. It can be dangerous; it can even bite you quite hard and make you cry. Now the trick is to SHOW NO FEAR. If the wild beast smells your terror it will leap up and bite you for sure. If you’ve bought a reasonably priced fabric and an easy pattern then you have nothing to fear. Go on – go for it – you’ll be the belle of the ball!

Highland Property Figures Stay Positive Good news can be hard to come by, but if you look hard enough you’ll always find reasons to be positive. Admittedly it can be difficult to feel positive when headlines scream about the economic recovery beginning to stall and that we are threatened by a double dip recession.

sponsored by HSPC.co.uk

The official line across Scotland seems to be that whatever recovery there is, it has slowed down somewhat, perhaps this is not surprising given the general economic uncertainty facing individuals and businesses across the United Kingdom, combined with the economic turmoil and tough austerity measures this year in parts of the Eurozone.

million changing hands, which is 7% up on the equivalent figure for last year. In fact, across the board, the HSPC’s figures are in the black and provide some more good reasons for positivity. Average house prices in June were up by 5%, the number of insertions was up by 82% and the number of website enquiries peaked at 3,706 a day (up 4% on 2009).

Despite this uncertain national view, closer to home the news has a distinctly more positive feel about it. Figures from the HSPC show the number of properties sold in June reached 103, which is 6% up on a year ago. The sales resulted in £17

So despite the negative national headlines, overall news from the Highland property market continues to provide reasons for positivity with these encouraging year-on-year figures once again holding up so well.

A new leaf?…or NEWLIFE? “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Life begins with a birth. Physical life begins with a birth, and spiritual life likewise begins with a birth. We become members of the human family by birth, and we become members of the family of God by a birth — by being born again. There is no other way into the human family except by birth; and there is no other way into God’s family except by the new birth. Education will not do it. Joining a church will not do it. Reformation will not, and neither will making up your mind to do better. Even doing your best will not avail, and certainly turning over a new leaf will not gain you entrance into the family of God. “Ye must be born again.” John 3:7. CHRISTIANITY IS CHRIST Christianity is not religion. Christianity is life — the life of the Lord Jesus Christ introduced into us at the moment we are born again and reproduced in us moment by moment by the Holy Spirit. “I am come that they might have life.” John 10:10. “He that hath the Son hath life.” I John 5:12. “To me to live is Christ.” Philippians 1:21. NOT TRYING, BUT TRUSTING Trying to follow Christ is not Christianity. Christianity is not imitation of Christ; it is the indwelling Christ who has done it all. He has finished the work of redemption, and there is nothing left for us to do. We are simply to receive and trust Him who said, “It is finished!” He shed His precious blood on the cross, and the work is all done, once and forever. Cease trying and begin trusting! (John 3:16). HOW CAN YOU BE BORN AGAIN? Simply, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” see Acts 16:31. “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” I John 5:1. You are born again by trusting a Person. The very moment you trust the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Saviour, He comes in and eternal life begins. WHAT IS MEANT BY “BELIEVE”? To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ means more than believing the historic facts concerning Him. Intellectual belief about Christ is not sufficient. “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” James 2:19. But they are not saved! The belief which accompanies salvation must be with the heart. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness.” Romans 10:10

the ica wall.

To believe on Christ and receive Him means to rely on Him alone. It is not Christ and the Church, or Christ and baptism, or Christ and my faith. It is not Christ and anything else. We are to depend on Him and definitely and deliberately receive Him. Believing on Christ means trusting Him so utterly that if He should fail there would be nothing left.

INVERNESS SONGWRITER USES BUSINESS SKILLS TO PROMOTE BAND… An Inverness woman who always dreamed of being a musician is loving life fronting her own band with the help of her local Business Gateway office. CLAIRE CAMPBELL, 34, has been singing and playing piano, guitar and fiddle since she was a young age. The talented musician performed on Broadway, played with Scottish band Belle and Sebastian and released an album as a solo artist. After returning to the Highlands, she decided to form her own unique band, Abagail Grey, where she could showcase her songwriting talents. Abagail Grey is a five piece band of vocals, piano, harp, trumpet, violin, guitars and drums. Already receiving rave reviews for their live shows, the band have now released a new album ‘Long Case Clock Suspension’. Claire said: “I wanted to work with musicians on a permanent basis and that’s really how the band came together. The longer you play together the better the sound so I was always keen to form a group. It took a while for us to get the perfect line up but now we feel that this is it. We love playing together and are really close.

“We are delighted with the album and hope to have another one finished for next summer. Right now we are looking for an agent as it takes up a lot of time trying to arrange gigs and festival spots and I want to focus on writing and playing.” She added: “Business Gateway is the best place to go if you are thinking about setting up your own business. When I decided to start my own band I attended their Start Up events and found the advice invaluable.

“I received help on how to market my band, arrange gigs and how best to sell our music. They showed me how to follow my dream and I am very excited about the future.” Mark MacKintosh, Regional Development Officer, Business Gateway Inverness office said: “Claire has received ongoing support from us . She has received some financial support through a local start up grant scheme. Abagail Grey have already received great reviews for their live performances and we are excited about the new album.” Business Gateway provides practical help, advice and support for new and growing businesses. KEN KELMAN: Pulling a Youie... what I mean by it and that in essence is what words are all about, the actual spelling being in many ways unimportant unless the word is so miss-spelt it looks more like a completely different word to the one you meant); perhaps for some reason, a local bye-law or something, it’s more expressly forbidden to completely change your mind about going in one direction and head off back the way you came, here, than anywhere else - which begs the question ‘is it ok to pull youies everywhere else on the road network where there aren’t such signs; or, maybe someone overstocked on no ‘U’ turn signs and just wanted to save face. Why is it that we call this dangerous action a ‘U’ turn anyway, when from the driver’s point of view the path you take is much more of a small ‘n’ shape?

D

riving down the A9 through Bankfoot, that bit not far this side of Perth where the Macbeth Experience visitor centre is. You know it, there’s like a farm and a few other buildings, and a major new road junction that took them ages to build and doesn’t seem to have any purpose except making it marginally easier, if you’re north-bound, to turn right on to an unclassified road that eventually leads to the village of Murthly. I suppose it might also alleviate some congestion if there’s lots of people all wishing to experience Macbeth at the same time - I’ll grudgingly accept that. I noticed on this stretch a sign forbidding me from performing a ‘U’ turn. I didn’t mind too much since I had no intention of making that particular manoeuvre at that particular time. Ten yards or so down the road though there was another sign prohibiting ‘U’ turns, another one ten yards after that, and another in a further ten yards, and so on, you get the picture, for over half a mile. Seemed a bit excessive to me, I actually can’t remember the last time I did make a ‘U’ turn and it certainly wasn’t on a busy high speed road at an unnecessary, all-be-it finely constructed, junction. It also kind of made me want to do one now - in a ‘stick it to the man’ sort of way. But I didn’t. I did wonder why the signs were there though; maybe this part of the A9 is especially prone to people ‘pulling a youie’ (I’ve decided this is how the word should be spelled - feel free to argue, but you know 74
