Scotland’s Housing Expo takes place at Milton of Leys in Inverness from 1 to 31 August showcasing over 50 fantastic houses designed with the future in mind. The homes on view at the Expo bring to life award-winning designs promoting eco-friendly living and using materials in exciting and inspiring ways. Each house plot is unique and, together, the development will be the first of its kind in the UK whilst promoting ‘green’ living to help the planet! The Expo aims to make good design and sustainable features commonplace in every home - just like the indoor WC that was such a revelation in the 1930s!

Scotland’s Housing Expo is based upon similar models found in mainland Europe, and particularly Finland, where historically the housing fair concept has proven very successful in stimulating quality design and innovation for housing. Aspiring to bring about a similar effect in the Highlands and throughout the UK, the Expo offers a model for future housing design and development. The homes on view are for sale or rent, with a proportion available for affordable housing.

KIDS GO FREE AT SCOTLAND’S HOUSING EXPO! Thanks to support from the Inverness Common Good Fund you can take your kids along for free to enjoy a family day out this summer at Scotland’s Housing Expo; an event that will create a vibrant and living community around the development of over 50 fantastic homes, on show to the public during August. All school age children accompanied by an adult go free!

Every day there’ll be something different to see and do over the course of the month-long Expo, just off the A9 at Milton of Leys in Inverness. The event will feature workshops, performers, art and lots of fun indoor and outdoor activities in and around the homes. Check the website for details of the daily programme of events, including seminars for trade and industry. Why not go more than once and buy a season ticket! This ticket enables you to visit the Expo as many times as you wish during August – and all for just £10! MATISSE: DRAWING WITH SCISSORS, LATE WORKS 1950-1954 7 Aug - 6 Sept The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour. This exhibition, a Hayward Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre, features 35 lithographic prints of the famous cut-outs, produced in the last four years of his life, whien the artist was confined to his bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and Blue Nudes. ‘There is no gap between my earlier pictures and my cut-outs’, Matisse wrote, ‘I have only reached a form reduced to the essential through greater absoluteness and greater abstraction.’

EUROPA EUROPA @ Eden Court Cinema 7.30pm - 15 - MARCO HOFSCHNEIDER is hugely impressive as Salomon Perel, the Jewish teenager who fled to Soviet-occupied Poland to escape the Nazi tyranny, only to become accepted as a loyal Aryan after he was captured by the advancing Germans. Agonisingly hiding the physical clues to his extraction, he becomes a hero of the Hitler Youth and even manages to romance rabid anti-Semite Julie Delpy. Holland’s wonderfully understated direction allows the cruel ironies to bite harder and she makes chilling use of the paraphernalia of totalitarianism.

THE EXPENDABLES @ Vue Inverness - 18 Starring SYLVESTER STALLONE, JET LI, MICKEY ROURKE, RANDY COUTURE (whose name sounds like a porn star clothing line) and STEVE AUSTIN, with cameo roles by ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER and BRUCE WILLIS. About mercenaries trying to overthrow a South American dictator. What’s not to love? Is it in 3D? No!!! Boo! Not proper cinema then. SALT @ Vue Inverness - 12A In a curious case of art imitating life, or perhaps further proof that Hollywood is in cahoots with government agencies, ANGELINA JOLIE stars as a CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy. Unlike Anna Chapman her character, Evelyn Salt, goes on the run using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to avoid capture. Jolie can pretty much churn out these sort of roles in her sleep these days, but at least the flukily fortunate timing should give it a little more resonance than the usual hiding-by-numbers. MARMADUKE @ Vue Inverness - PG A suburban family moves to a new neighborhood in Orange County, California with their large yet lovable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way. But its not all living large for the Duke, who finds that fitting in with his new fourlegged friends - and a potential romantic interest - isn’t always easy for a super-sized teenage dog. With the voice of OWEN WILSON.

THE ILLUSIONIST @ Eden Court Cinema PG Belleville Rendez-Vous is one of the finest animated films of recent years and though the director Sylvain Chomet is French, he’s relocated to Edinburgh where he’s set the follow-up (along with interludes in the Highlands and Islands). The Illusionist is based on an unmade screenplay by French comedy genius Jacques Tati and was a huge critical hit when it debuted at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Set in the 1950s it tells the story of an old-time magician who just wants to entertain, but is finding stage space very hard to come by in an ever changing world. Chomet’s gorgeous old-school style of animation is the perfect way to tell this story, and in his depiction of both the Highland landscape and the streets of Edinburgh, Scotland has rarely looked so dreamily beautiful.

Mobile Conch Shell visits Highland Communities

rtists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich are launching ‘The Conch Sound Studio’ at Scotland’s Housing Expo on 1st Aug at Milton of Leys. ‘The Conch Sound Studio’ will be an exciting mobile structure in the shape of a sea shell made of local larch where people can sit, listen and discuss ideas of how communities can survive and thrive in current times.

Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich make work that uses sculpture, performance, video and socially engaged practice to invite participants to connect with their work to re-imagine the world they inhabit and playfully open up spaces where the possible and the actual come together. “We are very excited about making this a new artwork, and to be working with local writers and makers including Angus Dunn, David Manson and Matt Stevenson. Responding to Scotland’s first Housing Expo opening, we’re delighted to be working with commissioning partners Inverness Old Town Art (IOTA).” The Conch Sound Studio aims to seek out hope and positive transformation within a growing climate of fear and an increasingly apocalyptic vision for the survival of society (and our Planet). After the Expo, the Conch Sound Studio will travel to Communities across the Highlands and act as a meeting point to bring people together to discuss ideas of community, survival, change and transformation.

The Review: CHAPTER ONE 39 HIGH ST FORRES 01309 671682 Much as we like to cling to Inverness like a baby to its favourite blanket, sometimes it’s good to see what might be out there past the city limits, so we clamber onto the ICA charabanc and make for the rather charming little town of Forres. Actually, we say “little”, but it’s much larger than you might have thought if you’ve only ever glimpsed it from the corner of your eye as you take the roundabout on the outskirts of town. In fact it has a thriving high street, complete with health food shops and alternative medicine outlets all over the place, suggesting a local population a tad more bohemian than you might expect. And there are flowers absolutely everywhere, perhaps unsurprisingly for a place that has won countless Britain In

Bloom accolades, the whole making for both a vibrant community and also exactly the sort of old-fashioned main thoroughfare that the corporate multinationals would love to see wiped from the face of the earth. And it’s in Forres that we choose to dine, at CHAPTER ONE. Just across the road from Murdoch’s the Butchers, purveyors apparently of the World Champion Scotch Pie and a host of other meaty delights. Chapter One looks equally enticing and impressively busy for Thursday lunchtime. These aren’t tourists either, but locals and regulars, and we’re soon to find out just why it’s so popular, offering as it does remarkable value for money and a high standard of cooking. It’s the latest enterprise of John McCruden Ex of Candles in Culloden and more recently having worked down South. Now he’s back in a great location, giving something of an object lesson in how to run

a neighbourhood restaurant. The place is modern without being gimmicky, an L-shaped space made to look even larger thanks to judicious use of mirrors and a sense of classiness without being stuffy. The menu reflects the informality of proceedings with an expansive array of stuff on offer, varying from “snacks” to full blown meals, though we’re soon to find that the notion of small portions isn’t countenanced here. So one of our party orders Soup And A Sandwich (just £4.95 for the two) only to be presented with a bowl of deliciously flavoursome Cauliflower Soup and a large Coronation Chicken Sandwich accompanied by gorgeous chips oven-baked in their skins. No skimping here. As we roam across the menu, another of our party has a starter of Hand Made Goats Cheese and Pepper Ravioli with

Parmesan and Pesto. Again a substantial portion, pretty much pushing the boundaries of the concept of starter, but there are no complaints about the quality of the cooking and the combination of flavours is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. For my starter, I plump for the intriguing sounding Warm Fruit Wood Smoked Salmon, which turns out to be lovely thin slices of the fish served with crisp pan fried Gnocchi and (rather too substantial) salad with citrus dressing. A nice combination showing an imagination in the kitchen that’s present throughout the meal. For mains, one of us goes for something from the extensive pizza selection, opting for Mediterranean Chargrilled Vegetable (delights such as Tuscan Sausage & Sweet Onion, Creamed Leeks, Prawn & Scallop and Cajun Chicken also being on offer). It goes without saying that it’s not exactly titchy, obviously handmade and even including asparagus. Made only with Italian flour and extra virgin olive oil, it has a rustic authenticity that makes it taste every bit as good as it looks.

There’s more asparagus on another main course, Saffron & Char-grilled Artichoke Risotto Cake, a vibrant green and cooked to perfection. The notion of making risotto into a cake is an unusual one and this time maybe it really is too large, even for the Scottish eyes/stomach axis, but it tastes good. The accompanying spicy courgette is, rather unusually, deep fried in a slightly sweet batter - ensuring this a dish that really combines a host of bold flavours. For my main I have the simple sounding Breast Of Chicken and am not entirely unsurprised to find it coming with all manner of additions. The breast itself is wrapped in Parma ham and covered in mozzarella, keeping it deliciously moist, but it’s served with immaculately cooked broccoli and a slightly less successful mashed potato tartlet topped with some kind of moussey creation. It doesn’t really add much to the dish and might perhaps be just that one step too far. Particularly since we’re now so full that we have to wait a good thirty seconds before bellowing, “Puddings? OF COURSE we

want puddings!” Our friendly waitress seems almost as excited about the concept of the desserts on offer as we are and we soon find out why. Midway through conversation, jaws suddenly drop and little whimpers of “what the...?” rend the air as the puds are brought out, revealing themselves to be baroque creations that wouldn’t be out of place at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. First up, the relatively simple Crème Brûlée , complete with magnificently executed crispy shell and beautifully flavoured with spiced rum and banana. It’s served with tremendous home-made ice cream and a shot of fruit puree, accompaniments for all of our desserts. Next, the waitress’ own recommendation, Chapter One Meringue Nest Filled with Banana and Toffee Fudge. It’s the sort of nest spacious enough to accommodate an eagle and you get a sugar rush just looking at it. That said, it’s all polished off in double quick time, a testament to its yumminess. The nest may be impressive, but it’s nothing compared to the rococo flamboyance of the Chapter One Mile High

Stawberry Cheese Cake, which spirals skyward with bold abandon. The “cake” element is merely an afterthought to swirl of cream and cream cheese possessed of fine fluffiness as it soars high above us. You couldn’t eat two of them, but one seems just about manageable. Bear in mind that each of the puds comes in at a mere £3.75, remarkable value considering the skill of their creation, something perfectly emphasised by the piece de resistance, a selection of NINE – count ‘em - Mini Desserts. That’s nine different, remarkably executed desserts, including éclairs, tarts and even a miniature sponge, with ice cream, fruit and puree for just £3.75. If that’s manageable financially, it puts just about every other restaurant in Britain to shame. By now our heads are positively fizzing with sugar and there is absolutely, positively no more room in our stomachs, not even for a wafer thin mint, so we waddle outside for a short constitutional, really rather hoping to come across a comfy armchair. Noticing the menu outside we see a rake of equally enticing dishes on Chapter One’s evening menu and the news that they serve a Sunday roast, something which we imagine is a thing of some wonder. We’ve already booked our table for next time and wholeheartedly suggest you do the same. A little gem, just like Forres itself. Total for FOUR (exc. drinks) £39.43

It’s an interesting repositioning of the event in your cultural life, but festival director BRID MCKIBBEN has ensured there are enough interesting and diverse guests to ensure that you’ll be getting more than enough to read to last you through the winter months. The festival is packed with fascinating events, climaxing with KEN KELMAN’s now legendary Pub Quiz in the Newsroom Bar on the Saturday night and you could pretty much choose any event at random and be guaranteed something interesting, but here are some of our personal prospective highlights:

LEVI ROOTS Thu 12, 5pm, OneTouch Mr Reggae Reggae Sauce who wowed the Dragon’s Den and turned a kitchen recipe into a phenomenon. Of course, if we were treated like adults and allowed to have a Sainsbury’s here we’d be able to sample his product rather than having to rely on getting it at Subway. Perhaps he’ll bring some with him when he comes to talk about his ace recipe book Levi Roots’ Food For Friends and a career that’s encompassed not just entrepreneurship and cookery, but also singing for Nelson Mandela and performing with James Brown.

WHISKY TASTING with IAN BUXTON Thu 12, 8pm, MacLean Room The author of the informative and witty 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die has little time for the snobbery and marketing gimmickry that pervades much of the whisky world, preferring instead just to give advice on what you should try. As former Marketing Director of Glenmorangie, he’s got twenty years’ experience and in 1991 was elected keeper of the Quaich which is not some sort of Harry Potter accolade, but rather the highest honour in the whisky industry. Drams are included in the ticket price. Hoorah!

ALISTAIR MOFFAT Fri 13, 6.30pm, OneTouch Moffat’s book The Highland Clans is a compelling and accessible history of Scottish clans, their leaders and of years of rivalry. It is told with a fluency and freshness which offers a new insight into the much recounted tales of Culloden and the Clearances. Many claims of the Scottish Gaelic nation arriving here from Central Asia and the Caucuses have been met with derision but Alistair introduces an air of scientific truth through the findings of recent DNA studies. Alistair gently mocks the invented traditions of the last 200 years such as adopting the tartan as a clan uniform, the pretentious ‘Highlanding’ of the whole of Scotland, high society’s adoption of the reel and the sword-dance while “all about the north and west of Scotland an original culture was being scattered to the wind like thistle seeds”.

For most of his life Urquhart has never mentioned the horrors of being held captive by the Japanese during WW2 and sent to build the Burma to Siam Railway aka Hellﬁre Pass. He never even told his wife although memories of the horrors often forced him to sleep in an armchair. Eventually he decided to write his memoirs and The Forgotten Highlander has become a best seller. He’s coming to tell more of his incredible story.

KEVIN MACNEIL Sun 15, 2pm, OneTouch MacNeil’s debut The Stornoway Way was described as “Trainspotting meets Whisky Galore” and his new novel The Method Actor’s Guide To Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde looks like being just as intriguing. Telling the tale of a young thespian in Edinburgh who has a bike crash and lives his life through ﬁrst egotism then selﬂessness it takes many of the themes of Stevenson’s original and examines through a 21st century prism. He’s also holding a Creative Writing Workshop on Sat 14 at noon so book your place now.

GRACE MAXWELL/EDWYN COLLINS Sun 15, 7pm OneTouch For us, this is the highlight of the whole festival. Partner and onetime manager of Edwyn Collins, Grace not only experienced Edwyn’s rise to fame, but also had to deal with his life threatening illnesses and arduous road to recovery. Her autobiographical account of her and Collins’ life together, “Falling And Laughing: The Restoration Of Edwyn Collins” is a marvellous insight delivered with Grace’s trademark wit and she’ll be talking to NICKY MARR about some of the stories behind it. A new leaf?…or NEWLIFE? “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Life begins with a birth. Physical life begins with a birth, and spiritual life likewise begins with a birth. We become members of the human family by birth, and we become members of the family of God by a birth — by being born again. There is no other way into the human family except by birth; and there is no other way into God’s family except by the new birth. Education will not do it. Joining a church will not do it. Reformation will not, and neither will making up your mind to do better. Even doing your best will not avail, and certainly turning over a new leaf will not gain you entrance into the family of God. “Ye must be born again.” John 3:7. CHRISTIANITY IS CHRIST Christianity is not religion. Christianity is life — the life of the Lord Jesus Christ introduced into us at the moment we are born again and reproduced in us moment by moment by the Holy Spirit. “I am come that they might have life.” John 10:10. “He that hath the Son hath life.” I John 5:12. “To me to live is Christ.” Philippians 1:21. NOT TRYING, BUT TRUSTING Trying to follow Christ is not Christianity. Christianity is not imitation of Christ; it is the indwelling Christ who has done it all. He has finished the work of redemption, and there is nothing left for us to do. We are simply to receive and trust Him who said, “It is finished!” He shed His precious blood on the cross, and the work is all done, once and forever. Cease trying and begin trusting! (John 3:16). HOW CAN YOU BE BORN AGAIN? Simply, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” see Acts 16:31. “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” I John 5:1. You are born again by trusting a Person. The very moment you trust the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Saviour, He comes in and eternal life begins. WHAT IS MEANT BY “BELIEVE”? To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ means more than believing the historic facts concerning Him. Intellectual belief about Christ is not sufficient. “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” James 2:19. But they are not saved! The belief which accompanies salvation must be with the heart. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness.” Romans 10:10 To believe on Christ and receive Him means to rely on Him alone. It is not Christ and the Church, or Christ and baptism, or Christ and my faith. It is not Christ and anything else. We are to depend on Him and definitely and deliberately receive Him. Believing on Christ means trusting Him so utterly that if He should fail there would be nothing left. You may belong to a church, or be a church officer; you may be very religious, and a great churchgoer; you may be active in church work and be doing the best that you can; you may be striving to live right and your outward life may be the acme of moral correctness; you may be looked up to, honored, and respected. But if you have not been born again, you are just as lost as if you had never

heard of Christ.

Yes, you may even teach a Sunday school class or be a preacher of the Gospel; you may be gifted in prayer, and read the Bible, sing, shout, and feel happy. But if you have never been born again, you are still in your sins and a stranger to the Lord Jesus Christ (see Matthew 7:21, 23; also John 8:24). “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Dear reader, God is offering you mercy and pardon : God loves you, Christ died as a substitute for your sins on the cross. You need to have repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. You have to receive Him for yourself; no-one can do it for you.
