ESSENCES @ Eden Court La Scala Cinema, Sat 25 Sep

A

series of films about patients at the Highland Hospice might not seem like the starting point for an uplifting experience, but this promises to be an event to blow away your preconceptions. Essences honours and celebrates aspects of the lives of people living with

a life limiting illness, through their thoughts, interests, activities and achievements. Supported by Highland Hospice, a collection of short videos have been produced, in which patients tell their stories, celebrate their lives and experiences and find a voice to express themselves. The films originated when Highland Hospice spent some time working with the ‘Rosetta Life’ organisation in 2007. Highland Hospice patients were encouraged to express thoughts and feelings about their experiences and put the results on camera. Some of this work took the form of poetry and was subsequently put to music with the help of Donald Shaw from Capercaillie and performed by the Anna Massey band. Inspired by the success of the Rosetta Life project, Highland Hospice went on to enlist the help of digital artists Nicole Heidtke and Stefan Baumberger for a year between 2008 and 2009. Again, some wonderful work and inspiring short films emerged from their time spent with the patients. By working with these artists, Highland Hospice staff gained the skills required to bring the project forward, resulting in a series of further films having been made in the hospice over the past year. Highland Hospice’s Occupational Therapist Ian James says, “’Essences’ is a celebration event, which values the work of the patients who have contributed their stories and life experiences to this wonderful project. Patients and staff have shared a rewarding experience in putting these films together, and we wanted to share our work with the public, who we are certain will be inspired by what they see.” Entry is free, although donations to Highland Hospice, somewhere that deserves every ounce of your support, will be warmly welcomed.

ART & GALLERIES > IMAG & HICA ED RUSCHA @ Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, 18 Sep-20 Nov

T

he recent Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition at IMAG gave us the chance to see the work of one of America’s most influential photographers, thanks to the Artists Rooms project jointly owned and managed by National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate on behalf of the nation. Following the success of 2009, 21 museums and galleries across the UK in 2010 will be showing 25 Artists Rooms exhibitions and displays from the collection created by the curator and collector, Anthony d’Offay. Which means we get the rare opportunity to see a selection of works by one of the most influential pop artists of the past fifty years, Ed Ruscha. The things that first fired his imagination – cinema and film; driving, roadside signs, and the flat, featureless landscapes of the American West; the city, filled with constant visual noise; the phenomenon of human communication and the pleasures of typography – remain the basis for his art, which is not only a visual delight, but still seems strikingly modern. Well worth seeing. Following its IMAG appearance, the show visits Timespan in Helmsdale and the Swanson Gallery in Thurso. Local Kids will get the chance to create their own Ed Ruscha inspired art which we hope to feature next month.

THE GREAT GLEN ARTISTS’ AIRSHOW @ HICA, Dalcrombie, Loch Ruthven and Outlandia, Glen Nevis, Lochaber, Sat 18 & Sun 19 Sep HICA (Highland Institute for Contemporary Art) has been putting on some good shows recently; giving weight to the theory that conceptual art doesn’t have to be a po-faced exercise in gobbledegook self-justification, but can actually be playful and stimulating. The Great Glen Artists’ Airshow sounds like being their most ambitious yet, a unique participatory weekend with activities taking place at either end of the magnificent natural fissure. At one end of the Great Glen will be the main site, at the HICA, with activities taking place on nearby Loch Ruthven, in the woodlands and on the open brae. At the other end will be the unique Utopian venture, Outlandia, a treehouse for artists in the sky, overlooking Ben Nevis. Saturday’s free programme will include an airborne investigation of wind currents above Loch Ruthven by Dutch artists Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum. Polak will be extending her inventive use of global positioning (GPS) technology in her live performance beside the water. Bruce Gilchrist and Jo Joelson of London Fieldworks will present new work, installed in the woodland behind the loch, which imagines the flight path of birds as augurs, or omens, part of an ancient tradition of divination by birds. This new project was made in collaboration with a former hunter turned bird guide in the Brazilian Rainforest. London Fieldworks are also the creators of Outlandia, the destination of the Sunday bus tour event. Throughout the afternoon, there will be participatory flying of ‘supremacist kites’ by artist, Susanne Norregard Nielsen and in the evening, following an Open Air Meal, there will be a free programme of artists talks called ‘The Territory of the Air’ about the military/industrial and aerospace presence in remote places. And that just scratches the surface of what should at the very least make you think a little bit different about the sky above you. Capacity is limited so participants are asked to register and indicate when booking which events they will be taking part in - the Saturday daytime events, evening talks, open air meal (£10, £5 for children) and Sunday bus tour (£15 plus £10 lunch or £10 lunch only for those travelling independently). This is the first time in 15 years that Klinger has held an exhibition in Scotland. The Exhibition is of larger works in pencil, ‘drawn paintings’, and addresses the question: ‘What happens between any two people, when the conversation terminates, when one runs out of ones ‘script’, as it were, of polite conversation? This exhibition hopes to portray the less structured world beyond social expectation and boundaries into a conversation between souls, between essences.’ morayartcentre.org

CINEMA > Loch Ness Film Festival

FILM

LOCH NESS FILM FESTIVAL @ Loch Ness, Thu 23-Sun 26 Sep We always welcome a new festival and this one for filmmakers and cinephiles looks interesting. Taking place in various venues around Loch Ness including Arbriachan Hall, Steading Bar, Clansman Hotel and the Craigmonie Centre there’s a packed programme including short films and documentaries, live music and a chance to meet fellow film fans. Highlights include Richard Jobson’s 2009 thriller New Town Killers, a comic movie from Chris Lumb with the excellent title Tuck Bushman And The Legend Of Piddledown Dale and most interesting of all, a flick called The Wild Side Of Life: The Guilt Of Richard Minelli. The latter is a “no budget” Scottish gangster affair from Simon Jake Gillespie, who’ll be in attendance to talk about how he made it and the practicalities of embarking on such an enterprise. For more details go to www.lochnessfilmfestival.co.uk

CINEMA > Vue, Eden Court & More EDEN COURT FILMS GAINSBOURG Graphic novelist Joann Sfar’s surrealist portrait of iconoclast French songwriter (and embodiment of “louche”) Serge Gainsbourg. Though not entirely endorsed by Jane Birkin (played by Lucy Gordon who tragically killed herself soon after filming) it’s an ebullient celebration of crazed genius to a backdrop of extraordinary music. And the casting of Eric Elmosino in the title role is spot on. TAMARA DREWE The excellent Gemma Arterton stars in Stephen Frears’ version of the Posy Simmonds comic strip that’s been described as “like the filthiest possible version of The Archers. Showing the emotional hell of life in the country with its attendant lust, jealousy, envy and disappointment, it’s the perfect antidote to all that rose-tinted guff about how great it is to liove miles from the shops. THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE Second part of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. See this before the American version comes out next year.

VUE FILMS JONAH HEX The U.S. military makes a scarred bounty hunter an offer he cannot refuse: in exchange for his freedom, he must stop a terrorist who is ready to unleash Hell on Earth. An action movie then. Starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS Tim (Paul Rudd) is a rising executive who “succeeds” in finding the perfect guest, IRS employee Barry (Steve Carell), for his boss’s monthly event, a so-called “dinner for idiots,” which offers certain advantages to the exec who shows up with the biggest buffoon. An unusual premise and we’re hearing good things about it. RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE (From 10 Sep) In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into The Undead, Alice (Milla Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. With wearying inevitability this, the fourth in the series is in 3D. THE OTHER GUYS (From 17 Sep) Two mismatched cops (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) get to step things up and be like the cops they idolise, but soon find out it’s not quite what they expected. Samuel L Jackson joins in to confirm his role as the man who makes fifty million films a year so the strong cast should lift it above the usual fish-out-of-water business. EAT, PRAY, LOVE (From 24 Sep) Julia Roberts as a divorcee on a round-the-world trip. Why? CYRUS (from 24 Sep) – Another divorcee, this time John C Reiley, an actor who should know a lot better, tries getting back in the dating game, but falls foul of Cyrus, son of his new girlfriend Molly, played by Marisa Tomei, who also appears to have lowered her standards when it comes to scripts.

THE SINGING KETTLE - CALAMITY CASTLE @ Eden Court Empire, 01-03 Oct

T

o anyone growing up South Of The Border, the pan-generational success of The Singing Kettle is something that slipped well below the radar. For those up here though, they’re virtually national treasures, perhaps because they unashamedly celebrate the Scots tongue in their

vibrant songs about chucking granny off a bus, potato soup and decapitated herrings. Unlikely heroes, Cilla Fisher, Artie Trezise and Kevin MacLeod with Gary Coupland have turned children’s theatre into an art form, coming a long way from the first shows with clues to songs hidden in coloured kettles that gave the entourage their name. Their latest show finds them invited by Lord Spout of Glenkettle to help rescue his run down castle. Artie has appointed himself as the local Laird and Cilla the Lady of the Manor, while Kevin is the Gamekeeper and Gary is a Scatty Scottish Entertainer - bagpipes and all. The Singing Kettle wonder how difficult can it be to hang a portrait, display a suit of armour or place a stag’s head on the wall - but nothing’s easy at Calamity Castle! Especially when our four tartan heroes are distracted by ancient Singing Kettles that they find everywhere - from the sky-high turrets to the secret cellars. Can they complete the task before Lord Spout’s return? Yes, but only with the assistance of young helpers in the audience who have a chance to join in with the action on stage! There are lots of their trademark numbers like the aforementioned “Shove Your Granny”, “Tattie Soup” and “Herrin’s Heid” as well as brand new and all time favourite songs making for a superb singalong, action packed adventure. Remember to dress up in Tartan for some crazy Highland Fun and Games at Calamity Castle. For girls and boys of all ages.

PIANO RECITAL BY STEPHEN KOVACEVICH @ Inverness Town House, Wed 22 Sep - 8pm IVAN ILIC (PIANO) @ Nairn Community Centre, Fri 24 Sep - 8pm

T

his September will see two immensely gifted American Pianists of Former Yugoslavian descent come to perform in the Highlands. Firstly, Inverness Chamber Music introduces the greatly acclaimed pianist Stephen Kovacevich. This virtuoso will perform in the atmospheric surroundings of Inverness town house where he will play a series of sonatas by Beethoven and Schubert on Wednesday the 22nd of September. This includes Beethoven’s Sonatas 5 and 31 and Schubert’s sonata in B flat Major. In all this should be a remarkable performance with two great composers interpreted by such an acclaimed musician. The freshness and energy of Kovacevich’s performances have been acclaimed by the Boston Globe and the London Times. On the 24th, the acclaimed pianist Ivan Ilic will come to Nairn Community Centre to play music by Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin and Ravel. This programme spans a wide range of styles and composers demonstrating Ilic’s diverse talents. Ilic has been praised by sources as diverse as Fanfare Magazine, The Irish Times, San Francisco Classical Voice and Classical FM magazine. He has also performed in diverse venues such as Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall. Given that Ilic has been praised for the energy and colour of his performances, this should be another unmissable performance.

MUSIC > Clubbing CAKE @ Rose Street, Inverness, Fri 03 / Sat 04 Sep

R

ose Street? But that’s where...yep, where Motion used to be. And before that Blue. And so on back into the mists of time when it was presumably the site for

some kind of Pictish bacchanalia. Of all the incarnations, Motion perhaps came closest to utilising the space best and hosted some good nights, but sadly went the way of all before it and has lain dormant for over a year. Now the folk behind Cake have resurrected the venue, promising on their Facebook that “You can’t polish a turd, so we didn’t. We hollowed it out and inserted a proper soundsystem.” A little cruel perhaps, but shows that there’s some vim behind their intentions. And so on the opening night you’ll be able to see (and hear with perfect clarity), Teknique, Kaos Theory, Science Phyction, SoundClash, Steven Calvert and Stuart Inglis. The party continues on Saturday night with Kam Cheng, Planisfear & Thundercat, Brian MacKenzie, Alan MacPherson, Nicco & Robbie Newlands, between them playing house, electro and techno of the very highest calibre. The name of the club is a nod to Chris Morris’ sublime drug spoof, but this, they’re keen to emphasise, is all about the music. Let’s hope it’s a success and that the sacred spot can rock once more. Keep up to date with all the latest developments at http://tinyurl.com/3yvg7o8

UBERGIRL @ Hush, Fri 03 Sep “The search for Scotland’s Most Desirable Girl”. This’ll be the 21st century then. Bet there won’t be any astrophysicists entering (or indeed rightful winner Karen Gillan), but if you really want to prove that despite the pathological desire to wear little black flatties and channel the spirit of Paris Hilton you think it’s a competition worth taking part in, go to www.ubergirl.co.uk for details.

DAVE PEARCE @ Ironworks, Sat 25 Sep A welcome return to the ‘Ness for the king of anthemic trance and hard dance. With a packed broadcasting career running in tandem with his live shows, he’s also found time to put together Trancecast – a weekly podcast devoted to trance – which is available free on iTunes and features the latest trance releases and hosts a weekly guest mix from some of the biggest names. Just the right preparation then for what’s bound to be a top night.

FENECH-SOLER @ Ironworks, Wed 29 Sep Not strictly clubbing, but the band from Kings Cliffe are getting quite a reputation for their remix work, particularly for their remake of Marina & The Diamonds’ “Hollywood”. Recently, the band’s vocalist Ben Duffy was featured on the track Paper Romance by Groove Armada showing that

20

they’re perfectly capable of straddling genres. Get along and see why.

MUSIC > BLAS FESTIVAL > Celebrating Gaelic Culture> BLAS 2010 The Blas Festival is now an established part of the calendar, playing an important role in celebrating the culture of traditional music and Gaelic in the Highlands, with shows right across the region aiming to create a lasting legacy for communities. There’s plenty going on in this year’s festival which runs from 03-12 Sep, but here are some of the local highlights worth looking out for.

SHOOGLENIFTY/SKERRYVORE/NITEWORKS @ Inverness Airport, Fri 03 Sep How about this for a venue? The airport’s Hangar 2 plays host to a triple bill featuring the Acid Croft of Shooglenifty [main pic], Skerryvore’s fusion or traditional sounds with rock and funk and, originally hailing from Skye, but now based in Glasgow, the impressive techno/electronica combo Niteworks. There’s free parking at the airport for what should be a fine night. And you won’t even have to worry about putting all your toiletries in a little plastic bag.

GRAND OPENING CONCERT @ Eden Court, Sat 04 Sep Plenty of proof in this line up of the variety of different sounds running through the traditional music genre. MEANTIME, who have been entertaining audiences up here for over two decades mix folk and ceilidh classics with unusual instruments like melodeon and Jew’s Harp alongside the usual fiddle and pipes while singer/songwriter/piper IAIN MORRISON brings cello, piano, bass and drums into his band. He’ll also be joined onstage by guest collaborator, writer & poet Daibhidh Martin from Lewis. BRUCE MACGREGOR needs no introduction for fans of Blazin’ Fiddles and here he’ll be playing with his trio, the bill completed by BODEGA past winners of the Radio 2 Young Folk Musicians Of The Year award and one of the most dynamic young bands around.

GERRY O’CONNOR TRIO @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Sun 05 Sep

O’ Connor is the maestro of the banjo, incorprorating everything from bluegrass to Asian influences, African to Irish sounds into his extraordinary repertoire. A strong bill also includes Irish singer NOELEEN NI CHOLLA and Cap Breton artists GOIRDH DOMHNALLACH, BUDDY MACDONALD and RACHEL DAVIS.

TALES OF THE CITY @ IMAG, Mon 06 Sep A night of music, song, tales and images of Inverness from KIRSTEEN MACDONALD, RUARIDH MACMILLAN, LOUISE HAY and storyteller RUARIDH MACILLEATHAIN.

THE GATHERING @ Eden Court, Wed 08 Sep Something of a centrepiece for the whole festival with the Inverness branch of the CLARSACH SOCIETY, INVERNESS FIDDLERS, Gaelic vocal harmony singers CANNTAIREACHD, INVERNESS GALIC CHOIR and CHERYL HEGGIE DANCE GROUP showing how vibrant the traditions of song and dance continue to be.

EVENING OF CLASSIC PIPING @ Eden Court, Thu 09 Sep

Some of the most respected and best loved pipers perform on a bill topped by the legendary ANGUS MACCOLL. He’s joined by his son ANGUS MACCOLL JNR, ASHLEIGH BELL, NORTHERN CONSTABULARY COMMUNITY PIPE BAND and eleven year old BRIGHDE CHAIMBEUL, the youngest person ever to win a Piobaireachd medal at the prestigious Northern meeting.

HIGHLAND DINNER & DANCE @ Phipps Hall, Beauly, Fri 10 Sep Syncopated orchestration from the innovative IAIN MACPHAIL AND HIS SCOTTISH DANCE BAND plus PUR aka Shona Donaldson and Katie Mackenzie, plus an optional meal should make for a fine night.

BOYS ON THE LOCH @ Caledonian Canal, Fri 10 Sep

Always one of the most popular Blas events, you’re well advised to book early for the trio of MACGREGOR, BRECHIN & O HEADHRA entertaining you on a cruise up the canal and onto Loch Ness with a buffet meal included.

AIRS AND GRACES @ Inverness Airport, Sat 11 Sep Back to the airport, this time to the environs of the terminal’s restaurant looking out onto the runway for a ball featuring music from THE OCCASIONALS, anecdotes from retired pilot and raconteur BILL INNES and the beautiful voice of ISHBEL MACASKILL.

GRAND FINALE @ Eden Court, Sun 12 Sep Ten days of Blas comes to end with a celebratory concert at Eden Court featuring acts from across the generations including KILTEARN FIDDLERS, EILIDH MACKENZIE, BREABACH and more. A triumphant conclusion to what promises to be quite a reminder of the vital role traditional music plays in Highland culture. MUSIC > FOLK > Folk Club, Harp Village & more...

GLACHBEG CROFT FOLK CLUB @ Glachbeg Centre, Allanglach Wood, North Kessock, Tue 21 Sep While there are plenty of places to see rock music in the area- or at least many more than a decade agothere’s no dedicated folk club for the Black Isle and Inverness area. The Glachbeg Croft Community Association would like to find out if there’s a demand for such a thing and are taking the first steps towards a project that they hope will let people see and perform a wide variety of styles. With folk’s current critical renaissance this could be the ideal time to launch such a thing, so you’d do well to offer your support by heading to the opening night for PIC COURTESY OF AL ‘HOUDI’ DONNELLY a bill featuring ASHLEY MACKAY and BEN HESLING, CLARE CAMPBELL, THE BLACK ROCK CEILIDH BAND and ADRIAN TELFER. It’s free and light refreshments will be available, kicking off at 7.30pm. Hopefully it’ll be the start of something regular and an integral part of the folk zeitgeist in the area. Since then The Poozies have enjoyed great success due largely to the sheer joy in their music, which is at their core whatever else changes. With Sally there was an element of rock - she was once described as "the only person I've heard SCREAM in tune", (Shetland Folk Festival). When Sally left, "voice of the nineties", Kate Rusby, joined. With Kate came a more traditional flavour and a blossoming of the harmony singing that is such a trade-mark of the Poozies. 24 meteoric rise to stardom swept her away from the band to concentrate on solo work and a Kate's new metamorphosis occurred. Joining old-timers, Patsy, Karen, and Mary now came the quite delightful Eilidh Shaw, a great young west coast Scottish traditional fiddler with an impressive

CROMARTY IS THE HARP VILLAGE @ Cromarty, Sat 11 & Sun 12 Sep We’ve got a mental image of Cromarty turning into a scene from some sort of pastoral art movie as the whole village is taken over for the weekend in a celebration of the harp. Will there be harpists dragging their instruments along every street? Shimmery flourishes heard from every window? Total strangers swapping fingertip toughening techniques? Quite possibly. What we do know is that there’ll be workshops over both days for players of all levels, as well as lessons in storytelling and dance from Ireland, Scotland and Cap Breton. It all climaxes with a concert on Saturday night at The Stables featuring some of the best players in the country, namely Heather Yule, Laoise Kelly, Mary MacMaster, Tristan le Govic and Corrina Hewat. Weekend ticket which includes 4 workshops and a concert ticket cost £50, Tickets for the concert are £10 Advance bookings & more info on 01381 600354

BUTTON BOX GATHERING @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 16 Sep Some of the best button-box players and bands from all over Scotland come together to show what they can do. Performers include Jimmy & Sandy Lindsay, Alex McIntyre, Jim Mackay’s Dance Band, Willie McHardy & Lew Stott.

INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 22 Sep This is actually one of America’s most successful touring fests and it’s here in the UK for the third year to prove that there are just as many fans of the instrument in Blighty as Stateside. Each tour, IGN founder Brian Gore invites a new cast of guitar luminaries to join him for special evenings of solos, duets and quartets that highlight the virtuosity and diversity within the world of acoustic guitar. This time he’ll be joined by Clive Carroll, England’s show-stopping steel string guitarist and favourite IGN alumnus; Alexandre Gismonti, exciting young Brazilian guitarist and son of the legendary Egberto Gismonti, and Pino Forastiere from Italy, one of the leading players of the new contemporary steel string guitar world. 25

MUSIC > JAZZ/BLUES > ... HANS THEESSINK @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Sat 11 Sep

T

heessink (pictured) is a Dutch guitarist, singer and songwriter living in Vienna and widely acclaimed for the way that he performs American blues and roots music, particularly in a delta blues style. Bo Diddley

once described him as “one helluva

guitar player”, so with a recommendation like that it’s no surprise that his instructional video and DVD is as big a seller as his recorded output. Get along to see why he’s so revered.

Also on:

SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA @ Eden Court, Sat 18 Sep When guitarist John Scofield joined the SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA on tour in March 2010, it was an event that not only furthered the orchestra’s reputation for collaborations at the highest level. It marked fifteen years of conspicuous progress for arguably Britain’s most polished and versatile big band. Formed in 1995, under the committed and confident direction of saxophonist Tommy Smith, SNJO has developed into a world class ensemble capable of playing the classic big band music of Ellington, Basie, Goodman, Kenton and Herman with tremendous style and authority. For this show they’re turning their attention to Gershwin’s sublime Rhapsody In Blue, with a 45 minute version featuring award-winning pianist BRIAN KELLOCK As if that isn’t treat enough, they’re also featuring ALYN COSKER in a tribute to the music of Buddy Rich. www.eden-court.co.uk

TERRY OLDFIELD & SORAYA @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Sun 19 Sep Something a little different with Soraya’s lovely voice providing a counterpoint to a combination of flutes from the Indian Bansuri, pan pipes, mantra and percussion. An ambitious melange but one that works rather well. www.findhorn.org/uhall/

MUSIC > Festies

LOOPALLU @ Ullapool, Fri 17 & Sat 18 Sep It seems like only half a heartbeat ago when the festival season was cranking into gear with Rock Ness. Now the jumping about in Stetsons, ponchos and pink wellies palaver is coming to a close for another year, with an apparent total absence of summer in between. Thankfully this always popular annual shindig is the perfect way to ease you into autumn and we can safely say that it won’t be snowing. Probably. Headliners for one of the nights are Magic Numbers, whose sunny melodicism went down so well when they played Bella a couple of years back. We’ll find out in early September who’s headlining the other night, so keep checking for details. Star of the bill might turn out to be comedian-turned singer Adrian Edmondson, whose Bad Shepherds take the punk tunes of his youth and deliver them in a folk style complete with mandolins and the like. It might seem peculiar, but it’s actually rather splendid and suggests that punk might be the best folk music of all. A strong line up also includes Aberfeldy, Turin Brakes, Idlewild, Silver Columns, Mt Desolation, The Vatersay Boys and Skerryvore. www.loopallu.co.uk

MAD FERRET FESTIVAL @ The Loft, East Grange Farm, Kinloss, Sat 25 Sep A new addition to the festival roster and one that could be a bit of a gem. Two stages and a couple of dozen bands ranging from ska and punk to funk and techno, running from 2.30pm to 3am. There are no mega names on the bill, which means it’s probably going to be a whole lot more fun than the usual corporate hoo ha and we’re particularly looking forward to checking out the likes of Twisted Wheel, The Yard (reggae dubstep), We Are mars and splendidly named combinations The Amphetemeanies, The Begbies and Them Beatles. DJ’s Michael Kilkie & Alan Mcpherson (Audiolife) will be hosting The Loft from 11pm-3am Tickets available from Sound’n’ Vision, Elgin or thebooth.co.uk

BOOTSTOCK FESTIVAL @ Resolis Memorial Hall, Sat 04 Sep This music festival is an annual charity event to help fund educational opportunities for disadvantaged children in the most remote regions of Nepal. With bands (playing everything from rock and blues to more traditional sounds) all donating their services for free, it attracts people from all over the country. And there are workshops and games for all the family too. More details from www.resoliscommunityarts.org.uk

MUSIC > Rock AN EVENING WITH RICK WAKEMAN @ Eden Court Empire, Mon 27 Sep Ex Yes man and archetypal prog keyboardist, Wakeman is more familiar these days for his appearances on Grumpy Old Men. There’ll be none of his gloriously overblown showmanship here, but probably plenty of grumbling about modern life as he shares anecdotes with his usual wit and just a piano for accompaniment.

BRITISH SEA POWER @ Ironworks, Mon 27 Sep Announced just as we go to press and immediately installing itself as Gig Of The Month. The Cumbrian outfit have somehow managed to make a roistering, anthemic and determinedly British rock sound. Dropping in references to everything from sea birds and Eastern European football teams to wrestlers and Polish plumbers, they hammer out soaring classics like Waving Flags and Lights Out For Darker Skies that U2 would kill to even dream about. Then lob in a bit of pastoral folk just to see what happens. There is no other act on earth who have played with both The Wurzels and krautrockers Faust, the latter made all the more spectacular since it ended in a fist fight. They’ve played by the sea on the Scilly Isles, underground in a Cornish slate mine and at the Chelsea Flower Show. At the John Betjeman Centenary Gala, they performed alongside Ronnie Corbett, Nick Cave and The Prince Of Wales. They’re very special. Don’t miss.

KETAMINE DECO @ Mad Hatters, Thu 09 Sep Having supported Nazareth and Wishbone Ash and narrowly missed out on doing the same for Bad Company, its clear where KD’s allegiances lie, but despite their old school impulses, the quartet of Jason Martin (bass), Ross McEwen (guitar/vocals), Ruairidh

Duncan

(guitar/vocals)

and

Russell

Montgomery (drums) are always worth seeing when they come back to their hometown. They spend much of their time these days at college in Aberdeen and Glasgow, but their fans are always out in force on their return, so this should be good.

ALTERNATIVE X @ Cake, Sat 18 Sep The alternative music night moves from its old home at Ironworks to the newly opened Cake on the site of the old Motion. You’ll still be able to hear a wide array of sounds from classic rock to contemporary indie, but this time round the night is for over 18s only.

BOOK REVIEW > Shadowplayers: The Rise and Fall of Factory Records SHADOWPLAYERS: The Rise and Fall of Factory Records James Nice (Aurum) Author James Nice describes Factory records in his introduction as “the most culturally sophisticated label in the history of recorded sound”. It’s a lovely epitaph and as an assertation it’s hard to disagree, but fortunately that isn’t the half of it. Factory was also the most shambolic, badly run, underachieving, over stretched, unreliable, i m p o s s i b l y ambitious, eternally inflammable, relentlessly quixotic and downright glorious record label there’s ever been. To call it a company would be to suggest some security to what was really a spectacular demonstration of what could and couldn’t be done when dreamers and dictators came together to change the world, motivated by situationist impulses, an unmatched eye for design, unrivalled creativity and what founder Tony Wilson called “praxis”, the act of doing something first and then deciding afterwards why you did it. Ultimately it failed- in commercial terms at leastbut it did so with more elegance and more misguided integrity than any other label will ever do again. Contemporary conceptual artists are keen on defining their works these days as “interventions”. Well Factory intervened like a sledgehammer through the front door and every record label that followed owes it more than perhaps they realise even now. As someone who was fortunate enough to have witnessed much of its development at close quarters it’s

heartening to see some of my quotes included in this exhaustive 500 page tome, but author James Nice was even closer to the heart of it all, working for the Factory Benelux wing of proceedings and currently responsible for administering much of the Factory back catalogue. He is perfectly positioned then to document the history of the label right from the day in 1978 when Wilson and partner Alan Erasmus first saw the place with the “Factory For Sale” sign which provided the first arena for a wave of Manchester bands to play and gave the label its name. He’s interviewed loads of the major players in the Factory story and provided fresh insights into the relationships and impulses that brought the world Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, A Certain Ratio, the Hacienda nightclub and a “look” that continues to define the modern world. Thankfully there’s no airbrushing the past and broken promises and cracked friendships seem to pop up as often as glorious triumphs, which makes the account all the more definitive. When Wilson died tragically early and went to his grave with a coffin given its own Factory serial number-FAC 501- a huge part of British cultural history was lost. Fortunately this book is here to explain why we’ll never forget just how much.

YOU + OUTDOOR FUN = CHARITY FUNDRAISING There are loads of opportunities this month to do something good outdoors for charity and here are some of the best.

IT’S A KNOCKOUT >> @ Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness, Sat 12 Sep For some of us of a certain age, TV’s It’s A Knockout was the very height of entertainment. Towns from all over the country would compete against each other in challenges that seemed to involve falling over or tumbling into a swimming pool while Stuart Hall forsook commentary for helpless laughter like a man made entirely out of nitrous oxide. His assistant Eddie Waring took time out from covering rugby league to do important work with a dipstick and people tuned in in their millions. Better still was the “international” version, Jeux Sans Frontieres, the Champions League version of the format, filmed under floodlights in places like Utrecht, Baden-Baden and Poitiers, where questions of European unity were solved by people dressing up in giant milkmaid outfits negotiating obstacle courses. Good times. If all that’s got you nostalgic, now’s your chance to recreate the halcyon days and raise money at the same time for Highland Hospice. The event is staged by Graham Fisher’s International It’s A Knockout, who, 25 years ago, was the first company to take ex-BBC props from the television show on the road. A variety of businesses have already signed up, but there are still a few spaces available for teams of 10. It promises to be a great team building exercise, offering not only a challenge but tremendous fun for all involved. Contact a.mackay@highlandhospice.org

WALK TEN @ Beaufort Castle, Kiltarlity Sat 04 Sep Join Marie Curie Cancer care for a late summer evening 10k walk around beautiful Beaufort Castle. Find out more at mariecurie.org.uk/walkten

THE HEARTBEAT CHALLENGE @ Nairnshire, Sat 04 Sep Twelve miles running/walking through the Moy Estate followed by a ten mile cycle ride through scenic Highland countryside. The principal beneficiary of money raised is the Cardiology Department at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. More at heartbeatchallenge.co.uk

ULTIMATE GIRLS DAY OUT @ Whiteness, Nr Nairn, Sun 05 Sep A ladies driving challenge with chance to try your hand in a variety of vehicles. Last year there were fire engines, double decker buses, lorries and even a giant excavator so it’s bound to be pretty impressive. It’s all in aid of Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland. Find out more at chss.org.uk/fundraising 39

SPECIALS > LIVING FOOD & REAL ALE > yum, yum... REAL ALE FESTIVAL @ Castle Tavern, 10 -17 Sep

LIVING FOOD @ Cawdor Castle, Sat 25 Sep, 10am-5pm

Inverness is something of a Mecca for real ale aficionados and one of the best places to find it is at Castle Tavern which was the winner for the Inverness and District South Campaign for Real Ale Pub of the Year Competition 2010 and 3rd in the Scotland’s Real Ale Pub of the Year 2010. There’s no better chance to start to explore the world of the brew than with the Real Ale festival, where there’s the promise of 50 different ales and ciders with 10 or more different ones daily Black Gold and Orkney Blast are two ales they will have to taste and were both major award winners at the Scottish Beer Festival in Edinburgh. Not only that but £5 will get you pint of real ale and a haggis & black pudding burger. Well worth checking out and you might just find a new drink of choice to replace the fizzy lager.

Not “living food” as in something you have to hunt down with a stick (we hope), rather a celebration of local, organic and artisan produce, something which always has to be applauded. The monthly farmers’ market in the High Street is always a hit, so this should be a corker, with over fifty stalls of produce, organic BBQ , beer and wine. And to make things go with even more of a swing, cooking demonstrations and live music. The event is supported by the estimable Slow Food and Soil Associations, so you can guarantee some great stuff you might not have seen anywhere else. Tickets are just £3 (under 16s free) and include discounted entry into the gardens and grounds of the castle. Excellent stuff. www.cawdorcastle.com

SPECIALS/TALK > MONSTER FM > for One Month Only... monster fm is a 4 week RSL radio station broadcasting to the city of Inverness from the 1st to the 28th of September 2010. Its purpose is to provide a ‘real-life’ broadcast experience for the MFMT trainees based at MFR and to give you something different to listen to for a while.

Remember: it’s only on for a MONTH and you’ll find it at 87.7fm

Boring terminology: RSL Restricted Service Licence - it’s only on for 4 weeks and only covers Inverness MFMT Moray Firth Media Trust a charity uniquely providing radio training at MFR MFR Moray Firth Radio Week A period of time lasting 7 solar days

None of that’s particularly important… what really matters is that during the month of September on 87.7fm in and around Inverness you’ll hear: local music; a radio play; hour-long features on the Shirlie Project, Merkinch and the Calman Trust; a specially recorded concert with the Highland Schools Wind Band and the Highland Youth Big Band; specialist music programmes and much, much more besides. We might even read you a bed-time story or two!

monster fm’s DAYTIME line up sees our trainees keeping you company with music and chat interspersed with live guests, fun competitions, local bands and short features of local interest – visits to charity shops, the life of the highland vegan, Inverness Marina, ‘Zumba’ - a new form of keep fit dance exercise, and various martial arts. WEEKENDS on monster fm are all about the music, and a bit of comedy, but mainly the music, though that said there will be some comedy with Richard and Craig, though that’s not important right now, what’s important is the music… and the comedy. There’ll be programmes solely dedicated to dance music (the modern type mind none of your sedate ‘strictly’ nonsense); hip-hop and r’n’b including some Gaelic hip-hop!; monsters of rock; the history of Scottish pop music; show tunes; world music and ska & reggae. And you’ll even be able to hear what hospital radio sounds like with out the inconvenience of being confined to a hospital bed. ..and there’ll be comedy with Richard and Craig’s seven day replay last thing on a Sunday.

The RSL isn’t run for profit, the volunteers instead getting a training exercise that involves the community in new radio output, benefitting the likes of Merkinch, Shirlie Project, Calman Trust and School Youth Orchestra. Inverness Hospital Radio - celebrating their fortieth anniversary - will have a show each week, as will the MFR Cash For Kids Charity, the latter highlighting primary schools. Sponsors are MFR, Skills Development Scotland and the Highland Council. There are over 30 folk involved in bringing you this special month of broadcasting. The best way to get to know them is to tune in - 87.7fm, pop-pickers - but meanwhile, here are a few words and pictures from some of those involved... > AMY: I’ve always known I wanted to be in the media but didn’t know where until I was listening to the radio and heard the ad for Radioskills so I filled in the application form, sent it off then got an interview. After a nerve wrecking week I heard back that I’d got a place on the course and I’ve not looked back since. And now with Monster FM we’ve got this amazing opportunity to showcase all we’ve been learning and I can’t wait to push myself and see what I can do. ANNE LAMONT; nurse, mother, native Gaelic speaker and the third member of Monster FM’s bilingual team. Any resemblance to the witches of Macbeth is a load of ‘hubble, bubble, boil and trouble!’ FIONA J MACKENZIE: (and the ‘J’ is very important!) is from Dingwall a Gaelic singer and now thanks to Monster FM a Gaelic Broadcaster. With her càirdean Janice and Ann their daily relaxed mix of music and bilingual chat will be unmissable. > GEMMA: Off the top of my head… I’m a screaming Bowie fan who likes musicals and chillis. I absolutely love the course and can’t wait to put everything I’ve learned into practice and experience the ‘real thing’! JANICE MACIVER a busy part-time Gaelic medium teacher promises not to lecture but just bring some craic to Monster FM’s daily bilingual Gaelic and English broadcast. > JOEY: Grew up listening to the dulcet tones of Tich McCooey on MFR. I came across the MFMT radio skills course and was eager to find out more about the world of working in radio. Although not the biggest fan of listing to my own voice I’m really enjoying the course and looking forward to Monster FM (about 80% excitment 20% nerves!) JOSEY: Londoner, 26, playing Ska and Reggae. Wanted to bring my Notting Hill Carnival roots to Inverness. Relishing the

opportunity to be on radio and couldn’t ask for a better place to do it! > LAURA: I’m in that bit between leaving school and starting university. Currently working to fund my Gap Year trip to Africa to work with Lions… Can’t remember why I decided to apply to RadioSkills… Something random to do! But I love it and wouldn’t give it up for the world.

MARTIN

AMY, NINA, ANDREW, JENNIE, GEMMA

> MARTIN: As a lead singer in a band and karaoke host I have more experience singing into a microphone than speaking into one. Having studied Media & Film Production at University and with a long standing interest in music & radio, a RadioSkills VQ was the logical next step. As they say “You can lead an Irishman to a microphone, but good luck getting him to stop talking!”

JOEY

TERRY

RICHARD: Hello my names Richard and I am joint presenting the Drivetime Show on Monster FM. If you listen and find that I am rather boring then you might want to avoid the Comedy Show that me and Craig Noble will have on a Sunday night. However if this is not the case then tune in and enjoy. VIRGINIA: I’ve got three gorgeous kids plus a very patient husband. Music comes high up on my list of essentials in life. It’s therapy for the soul, connecting us to magical moments throughout our lives. I’ve loved Radio since I was an ‘ickle’ girl, making my own attempts at shows on a reel-to-reel and cassette recorders. The fantastic people here at Radioskills have given me the chance to do my VQ in Radio Broadcasting and learn so many new skills. Monster FM is the icing on the cake - we get to broadcast ‘live’

NOKIA COAST TO COAST Sat 18 Sep What to do this weekend? How about crossing Scotland by foot, kayak and bike over 109 miles of breathtaking landscape? That’s the basis of this remarkable event, which looks set to test the constitution to its very limit and could be rather fine indeed. For more details go to www.scotlandcoasttocoast.com

LOCH NESS MARATHON Sun 03 Oct For many, the highlight of the year for Scottish endurance fans, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running, the fourth largest in the country, is back even bigger and better. Over 8000 entries are expected across all events, with the Baxters River Ness 10K, the Baxters River Ness 5K Fun Run and the 10K Corporate Challenge supplemented for the first time by the Wee Nessie event, for pre-school age children, extending participation in the running events to cover all ages. So now’s the time to encourage the athletes of tomorrow to toddle, walk or jog their own monster race, accompanied by a parent or carer around the circuit. Most exciting of all, the finish line will be moved closer to the centre of Inverness, meaning runners will cross the line in a stunning location alongside the River Ness near the heart of the city. A corresponding move in the start-line at Whitebridge on the south-side of Loch Ness will provide a faster start for the marathon, and is expected will generate faster times overall. Baxters Highland Food & Drink Fayre will feature local produce and offer food and drink for runners and spectators alike. Whetting your appetite will be Baxters own head chef sharing cooking tips and samples of food and drink from the area for all to enjoy. Entertainment at the finish arena includes live music featuring Feis Rois and massed pipes and drums, Highland dancing display, as well as charity and sports retailer stands, plus loads of activities for kids including climbing wall, bungee trampolines, bouncy castle and crazy golf. Marathon places are available for charity, club and overseas runners until 13 September, as well as places in the Baxters River Ness 10K, the 10K Corporate Challenge and the Baxters River Ness 5K Fun Run. There are five nominated charities for the event – Alzheimer Scotland, Breast Cancer Care, Highland Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care – and over 30 other associated national and Scottish charities. For full details of charities with places available for this year’s event visit www.lochnessmarathon.com/charities . For more information and details of all events, visit www.lochnessmarathon.com

SPORT > CAMANACHD CUP FINAL > win tickets! CAMANACHD CUP FINAL @ Bught Park, Sat 18 Sep

I

f you thought it was only the SPL and English Premier League that were dominated by the same teams year after year, you might want to think again when you see how half a dozen teams have ruled shinty for over 100 years. And two of the biggest names, Kingussie and Fort William meet in this year’s Camanachd Cup Final to be televised by the BBC. Fort William have surged in recent years, but Kingussie are almost as unbeatable and can lay claim to being the town where the Camanachd Association itself was born, at the Victoria Hotel on 10 Oct 1893. Four teams have won the trophy three times in a row, Newtonmore, Kingussie, Kyles Athletic and Fort William, with the last named looking for a four timer after last year’s stirring late victory over Kyles.

What is more, and a rarity in any such longlasting competition, they’re still playing for the original trophy. Due to the rambunctious nature of the celebrations of victorious teams leaving the trophy in a fragile state,(drinking whisky from the bowl is a traditional ritual and on one occasion the trophy was abandoned and then found in Somerled Square, Portree, after Skye Camanachd’s 1990 victory, as everybody had assumed somebody else was looking after it), the board of directors at the Camanachd Association took the decision to have the trophy renovated and a replica of the trophy made for presentation after finals. The replica was to be ready for the centenary final in 2007 in Inverness but the cost of a replica was considered prohibitive and therefore the original trophy is still used. Plenty of history there then and you can expect the fixture to redefine the concept of full-blooded.

JOSIE LONG @ Ironworks, Sun 12 Sep In the cut throat world of contemporary comedy, savagery and egotism seem to be pretty much the stock in trade. Which is why someone like Josie Long is so refreshing. If you’ve caught any of her (smartly rationed) TV or radio appearances you’ll recognise that she combines sharp wit and comedic invention with a genuine warm-hearted likeability. It may not be the quickest route to packing out the stadia, but it ensures that you come away from her shows feeling there’s a little more sunshine in the world rather than, as is the case with Carr et al, that someone’s just spent the best part of two hours engaging in a my-misanthropy’s-bigger-than-yours competition. A fine performer and a talent that’s still burgeoning, Long is not to be missed.

JOSIE LONG >>

Also on: DANNY BHOY @ Eden Court, Wed 15 Sep

Since his first solo show in a modest 60-seater at the Edinburgh Fringe back in 2001, Danny Bhoy’s star has risen stratospherically. These days he packs out venues and has continually smashed his own box office records in Australia and New Zealand as well as back here in Scotland. He even claims to be “probably the most travelled comedian working in the world today”. Full page ads in the broadsheets for this tour suggest even bigger is expected in the months ahead and fortunately his style (described by one critic as “the stand up equivalent of Bill Bryson” ) backs up the confidence.

THE MOIRA MONOLOGUES @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 04 Sep

First it was the Ladyboys, now it’s ALAN BISSETT writing and performing under the guise of Moira Bell, “Falkirk’s hardest woman”. An entertaining series of tales encompass everything from protecting her dog from the local Rottweiler, seducing a teacher at the school where she works as a cleaner and belting out Diana Ross for a karaoke night. An awful lot like people we know, frankly. Should be fun.

ho’d have thought that twelve years ago, when a group of women came up with the idea of posing for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund that they’d spawn not only countless similar enterprises, but also a hit film and stage show that would still be going strong in 2010? Not just going strong, but the fastest selling stage show ever and, thanks to an ever changing cast (much in the manner of the Vagina Monologues) a seeming ability to go on forever. The women concealing their bits behind vases/flowers/fruit etc for this run include Denise Black, Ruth Madoc, Jean Boht and Jennifer Ellison, the night promising to be “quirky, poignant and hilarious”.

H

enry Adam’s comedy was a big hit at Eden Court so if you missed it first time round or want to catch it again, now’s your chance. Telling the tale of comedian Haggis McSporran coming home for an interview on Jacobite Radio, it mixes reminiscences of a bizarre upbringing with an incisive view of the Highland character. Recommended.

W

e’re definitely liking the look of this one, which maintains Eden Court’s voracious desire to put on works that attempt to break new ground in presentation, style and content. TRC imagines a world where England’s anti-terrorism laws have finally dispensed with the last of civil liberties (how, er, farfetched). Dizraeli, the leader of the popular revolution, has been arrested and it’s up to a journalist (played by Canadian rapper Baba Brinkman, who’s been described as “The Geoffrey Chaucer of Hip Hop”) to interview him and get to the bottom of his politics. Set in a state police station, it combines multimedia projections, real-time camera work and a live scratch DJ against the backdrop of a battle of political ideologies. Relevant and entertaining.

THEATRE > DANCE… KATHAKALI ANNIVERSARY TOUR @ Black isle Leisure Centre, Fri 17 Sep

E

lgin’s Out Of Darkness Theatre Company have in the past accompanied the Kathakali dancers, exponents of an ancient Indian art form that utilises sign language from over 4,000 years ago. Drummers are utilised alongside them this time for Kathakali’s 23rd Anniversary Tour and provide an opportunity to witness something both extraordinary and timeless. With roots in ancient temple music, traditional Indian Kathakali performances often last from dusk until dawn, but this is a shorter, more accessible way of experiencing something rich in heritage and intricately accomplished. andoco Dance Company returns with three new works that show the richness, beauty and diversity of contemporary dance in one evening. CDC is Britain’s leading company of disabled and non-disabled dancers and this shows the adventurous instincts that define what they do. Sarah Michelson is much better known in New York where she’s currently based than over there, but the Brit ex-pat has been getting critical acclaim for her contribution to this bill, The Hangman. Both celebrating and parodying the discipline and drama of dance, Pete Drungle’s frenetic score accompanies the performers’ ever more outlandishly revealing garb. Wendy Houston’s Imperfect Storm takes Shakespeare’s The Tempest as a starting point for another rejigging of theatrical conventions as seven talking dancers re-enact their creative process in jesters’ hats, Elizabethan collars and angels’ wings. Between these two pieces comes Emanuel Gat’s In Translation, the most pure dance piece, set to the music of Bach and using performers dressed in street clothes. The whole should make for a highly original evening. www.eden-court.co.uk

Drama: THE TAILOR OF INVERNESS @ Eden Court, Sun 12–Wed 15 Sep

B

ack at Eden Court for the third time due to its remarkable, and deserved, popularity, THE TAILOR OF INVERNESS is a powerful and emotional drama written and performed by MATTHEW ZAJAC and inspired by the incredible life of his father. Created by the Inverness-based Dogstar Theatre (The Seer, ‘e Polish Quine), it is the story of

how a boy who grew up on a farm in Galicia (Eastern Poland, now Western Ukraine) , was caught by the murderous tides of the Second World War and finally came to be a tailor in Inverness. But was he really who he said he was? Zajac’s words combine with music from violinists GAVIN MARWICK and JONNY HARDIE along with dance and video to tell the moving story of this ordinary man. It’s picked up a host of awards and if you haven’t seen it yet then now’s your chance to discover just how good it is. www.eden-court.co.uk

THE WEIR @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Wed 29 Sep In a small bar in rural Ireland, four men vie for the attention of Valerie, a pretty young woman from Dublin who has just rented an old house in the area. After a few drinks, they tell stories of spooky local folklore. But Valerie’s tale, of why she left Dublin, is melancholy and true – and far more shocking than anything made up. That’s the starting point for Conor McPherson’s award-winning play being toured by the fab Mull Theatre Company. www. strathpefferpavilion.org

THEATRE > COMEDY > ???????...

THE CHOOKY BRAE @ Eden Court, Fri 17 & Sat 18 Sep This is Borderline Theatre’s follow-up to previous popular productions The Wall and The Ducky, the final chapter in The Stewarton trilogy about growing up in small-town Scotland. And the plot sounds a veritable hoot. “It’s Christmas day in Stewarton and Irene Gordon’s struggling to get in the festive spirit. Her 18 year old daughter Norma’s just had a baby, her ex-husband Gordon’s just had a stroke and her eldest Barry’s having a break down. Even the Dr Who Christmas special is disappointing. If this was a wonderful life she would receive some angelic intervention - instead she gets Rab McGuire, a gift-wrapped male sex aid and an escaped chicken that won’t be stuffed.” Surely the TV adaptation of the trilogy can’t be far away, or would that be crediting BBC Scotland/STV with some sort of imagination?

Musical: SUNSHINE ON LEITH (pic) @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 21-Sat 25 Sep

T

he Proclaimers used to play the Market Bar back in the day and they’ve revisited throughout their career, making for an enduring connection twixt the city and the twins. No surprise then that Sunshine On Leith, STEPHEN GREENHORN’s musical incorporating the duo’s songs, was such a hit when it came to Eden Court last year. By then of course, it had already established itself as one of the most popular modern musicals in Scotland, appealing not just to Proclaimers fans, but also enthusiasts for the combination of drama, dance and song woven into the story of soldiers Dave and Ally, childhood friends who return home to Edinburgh after a tour of duty in Afghanistan and have to learn about the challenges of acclimatising to Civvy Street. Families, relationships and life in Leith are the backdrop to the narrative which includes songs you know and love like Letter From America and 500 Miles. It’ll be interesting to see how the show has grown and developed now that it’s achieved such widespread popularity. www.eden-court.co.uk

EATING OUT:

The Review: THE MARINADE 7 BRIDGE STREET INVERNESS 01463 713200 You could be forgiven for not having noticed that THE MARINADE even exists, despite it being slap-bang in the middle of town. That stretch of Bridge Street, with army recruitment office, employment bureau and Poundstretcher cheek by jowl with tartantastic tourist souvenirs and whisky suppliers is, thanks to the presence of a giant concrete box on top of it, fifty yards of brutally ugly sixties aesthetic horror. And consequently a strip that the brains of Inverness residents render invisible in a neat neurological trick to take the horror away. So The Marinade is always going to have its work cut out to make people spot it’s there, something that isn’t helped by it having a remarkably unprepossessing

frontage. Formerly the site of a coffee shop and an Indian restaurant, the impression is that somewhere in the mists of time it could well have been a doctor’s surgery or solicitor’s office, at least judging by the heavy brown front door. Menus in the window look more of an afterthought than an enticement so unless you happen to stop outside by accident – perhaps to shelter from the elements that reliably whip up a frenzy down by the riverside – you may never have spotted that there’s food on offer. And that’s a shame, because The Marinade is serving some very fine food indeed at great value and deserves to be far more popular than (judging by the fact that only one other table is taken the day we visit) it currently is. Apparently it’s busier in the evenings, presumably as a result of tourist trade, but what it needs

now is to attract locals as well, particularly during those endless winter months. It’s a rum old interior, made all the more unsettling by the fact that the strange front door opens right into its midst. When it was an Indian place it was much darker, but now it’s brightly lit with a variety of chandeliers and candelabra, exposing bare white walls and rather half-hearted drapes. The furniture at the seven tables is heavy and Gothic, which isn’t bad in itself, but needs rather more dramatic interior decoration to really work. At the back there’s a small bar and an absolutely enormous array of sofas, taking up far more space than is entirely necessary. Most peculiar. Thankfully the restaurant does have ammunition to resist such criticism in the form of top quality nosh. As we 57 are to find out…

The lunchtime menu is just £6.95 for two courses and £8.95 for three, a price that would excuse turning out any old rubbish and still get marks for some sort of value, but whoever is in the kitchen has obviously worked out a way to combine value with skill and almost everything on the menu is appealing. The USP of the place, as its name suggests, is the use of marinades and “special pickles” to flavour the food, unique to each dish and perhaps drawing on a Polish tradition reflecting the nationality of the people behind the place. It’s not Polish food per se, but does recognise the importance of bold flavours. The starters set the tone with some panache. For me Chicken Livers and Wild Mushrooms in a Cream Sauce, served with a Slice of Brioche and Green Leaves. It’s presented beautifully on a plate-cumbowl, not making the usual (it has to be said, Scottish)

58

mistake of massive portion size just for the sake of it. There’s an admirably restrained amount of the rich, perfectly moist livers and luscious sauce, perfectly matched to the sweetness of the brioche. It’s as good a starter as I’ve had in a long time. My companion plumps for Truffle & Balsamic Glazed Vegetables on Seasoned Wedges, another odd combination, but one which works brilliantly. Again the presentation is great, the combination of baby carrots, leek and cauliflower sitting atop baked potato wedges. The seasoning and glaze is judged to be delicious, particularly the (lightly pickled?) sweet cauliflower. One of the restaurant’s main selling points is that “everything is cooked from scratch”, which is fine if you’re going round to someone’s house for the day, prepared to while away the time while the chef carefully prepares something. It’s not quite as workable however when running a restaurant,

meaning that with even just two of us there, the wait between starters and main course was well over half an hour. When the place is full the kitchen must go into some sort of meltdown. Quality wise it was worth the wait, my main being Lamb Chops and Lamb Jus with Mustard Potato Puree and Cheesy Cauliflower. It’s difficult to give chops such a depth of flavour without them drying out, but these are succulent and tasty, accompanied by an uncompromisingly mustard mash. The cauliflower cheese is strange looking, but wellcooked, still retaining crunch rather than subsiding into a sloppy mess as is so often the case. My companion has Grilled Tuna Steak with Lemon and Leek Sauce, again unafraid of big flavours, this time thanks to either lemongrass or pickled lemon running through the leek sauce. The steak itself was skilfully grilled and the accompanying baby potatoes providing just the right balance.

With the whole “cooked from scratch” ethos running around our heads we began to suspect that ordering pudding might set in motion a behind-the-scenes demand for getting out the eggs, flour and baking powder, but these at least seemed to have been prepared ahead of time. For me, Vanilla Cheesecake, served with strawberries and a rather sad squirt of canned cream (rather than the advertised ice cream). Nice enough, but below the standard of the first two courses. My companion’s Lemon Tart presses all the right buttons and again presentation turns something simple into a special looking dish. A good meal then, actually made all the more impressive by the unpromising surroundings. And you get the feeling that the interior/signage/ etc really have to be addressed if the place is to fulfil its undoubted potential. They needn’t worry about getting the cooking right – there are absolutely no worries on that front – but if they’re to succeed their going to have to find a way to not only make the place somewhere more appealing to actually drop into (whether by modernising or even going the whole hog on the Gothic front) and ensure that the admirable attempt to cook everything from scratch doesn’t result in such long waits for food. There is currently no drinks licence so you have to bring your own, but to their immense credit they don’t charge corkage so you can afford to treat yourself by turning up with a nice bottle. It’s a great little place and deserves to succeed. Fingers crossed it realises how to do it. Total for 2 (exc. drinks) £17.90

Making the most of YOU. Is ordering your Wedding Dress online really such a good idea? from Iona Peace at Dress 2 Impress Buying online is fast becoming the new way to shop! And why not...feet up, cup of tea in one hand and everything you need at just one click of a button. No trailing round endless shops, screaming kids or queuing- perfect! Or is it...? For many purchases the benefits of online shopping are obvious, as regards price, delivery direct to your door and being able to order day or night. However wedding dress shopping for that “perfect dress” requires something more....Wedding dress shopping is not like any other kind. A lot more time, thought and effort will go into the purchase than if you were simply looking for a new party dress! Choosing a wedding dress is a special event, one to be shared with friends and family, a fun and enjoyable occasion, in fact a truly memorable experience in itself. Trying wedding dresses on should make you feel a million dollars. In a Bridal Salon an initial one to one consultation with a bridal expert assures you of professional advice on what styles will suit your size, shape and colouring. The expert will also be able to advise you on theme, colours, accessories, the finishing touches that will set the scene for your wedding. Brides often end up choosing a style of dress different from the one they originally had in mind. Brides ordering online are often disappointed and upset when their dress arrives and it

[ health • style • beauty • fitness ] is nothing like they imagined it would be. This can result in brides having to buy a second wedding dress from a Bridal Salon at short notice. When buying online the wedding dress you receive may not be the dress you ordered!!! It may be a cheap imitation of a designer gown. Remember the dress you see in the image online is not necessarily the wedding dress you receive. Bridal Salons are Authorised Stockists of the Designers they stock and salon dresses are fully guaranteed as regards their quality, correct size, colour, fabric and style. It is important to experience not only how a wedding dress looks on, but also how it feels and moves too. The only way to understand the key qualities of different bridal fabrics is to try dresses on. This is not an option with internet purchases. When viewing dresses online it is difficult to see the detail involved in the quality craftsmanship of the dresses and embellishments such as crystals, pearls and lace. (Many online wedding dresses come with inferior detail such as cheap plastic sequins and beading.) Often online dresses have inadequate structuring with little or no boning, no netting and some even arrive with no lining! The fabric used for these dresses tends to be inferior, cheap fabric that you could spit peas through! Would you REALLY want to wear a dress like this on your wedding day! Continued >>

Continued>> When your internet wedding dress arrives it may be in a small package, all crumpled up. It would require to be professionally pressed at an added cost. When buying a dress from any Bridal Salon this service is included in the purchase. Quite apart from the above pitfalls of purchasing your wedding dress online there are also hidden costs involved. These include postage and packaging, shipping and handling, taxes and pressing. Too many brides are disappointed with their online wedding dresses. If you are still contemplating going down this route Warning - Purchase with care!!!

HSPC are reasonably upbeat about this small setback as this could be a single month returning a slowdown in sales and not an actual trend.

Property figures for July Figures from the Highland Solicitors Property Centre show that the house market recovery, in the first half of 2010, ‘stumbled’ a little in July. The strong start to the year continued through into the second quarter, with total sales up 18% on the same period on 2009. July, however, was slightly weaker with sales falling 7% on 2009.

To some extent It’s inevitable that there is a degree of uncertainty among house buyers in the wake of the Government’s Emergency Budget. In addition, first time buyers are still finding it difficult to obtain mortgages. But, while sales may be marginally down, the figures also reveal that this is a good time for potential buyers. During July HSPC had highest number of properties on the market this year, up 7% on July 2009.

The market is definitely providing a good choice for buyers at the moment. People who held off selling their homes have responded to the stronger market this year and have decided to put their homes on the market, raising property numbers. Perhaps inevitably, given the greater supply of properties on the market, the average price also fell slightly in July to £161,929, down 7% on July 2009. If the economic medicine begins to work and the forecast growth filters through to the local economy, there is a chance July’s figures could be just a slower month and we could see further growth during the second half 2010.

GORDON SWAPS VIENNA FOR INVERNESS TO LAUNCH HIS NEW VENTURE… Following three years as an energy market analyst in Vienna, Gordon Pearson realised that his heart lay in his native Scotland and decided to pack it all in to set up his own hillwalking business in Inverness. Launched in July, with funding help from Business Gateway, WOW Scotland (www.wow-scotland. co.uk) is racing along with local customers and clients from as far afield as America, Canada, France and China all looking to take to the hills on one of Gordon’s exclusive hiking tours.

“I have been extremely busy since I started,” says Gordon (27). “I have always had a love of the outdoors and I had originally travelled to Austria to continue my passion for skiing. There is nothing quite like the Scottish hills though and I knew that it wouldn’t be long before I returned home to Inverness.” With a wealth of outdoor experience combined with a range of qualifications including the Summer Mountain Leader Award, not to mention his business degree, Gordon had the perfect set of skills to launch his new venture. Working out of his base in Inverness Gordon takes groups of all abilities on a range of hiking tours deep into the Scottish wilderness to marvel at some of the finest scenery in the Highlands. Despite being a young business, WOW Scotland has already secured repeat customers with one girl enjoying her trek so much that she booked up for another one the next day.

“Although my business training helped me get WOW Scotland up and running, I knew that I would need some funding to help with equipment costs,” continues Gordon. “Business Gateway has been great and helped me secure a much needed start up grant.” The entrepreneur is now looking to build on his early success with plans afoot to develop his range of services to include wild camping and survival skills, in addition to a possible expansion to other areas of the Highlands.

“Gordon has worked extremely hard and used all of his skills to get WOW Scotland up and running,” says Mark Mackintosh from Business Gateway. “The effort has certainly paid off and we look forward to continuing to support the business as it develops.” To find out how Business Gateway can help your business visit www.bgateway.com or call 0845 609 6611. Andrie Flipov was once the celebrated conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra. Having been fired for remaining loyal to his Jewish musicians who had been banned from performing, Andrei was sacked. Thirty years later and Andrei now works as a cleaner at the Bolshoi. When he intercepts a fax inviting the orchestra to perform in Paris, he sets in motion a mad-cap plan to reunite his orchestra, travel to France and pose as the present day Bolshoi.
