GAINSBOURG @ Eden Court Graphic novelist Joann Sfar’s surrealist portrait of iconoclast French songwriter (and embodiment of “louche”) Serge Gainsbourg. Though not entirely endorsed by Jane Birkin (played by Lucy Gordon who tragically killed herself soon after filming) it’s an ebullient celebration of crazed genius to a backdrop of extraordinary music. And the casting of Eric Elmosino in the title role is spot on.

THE CONVERSATION - work by RANDY KLINGER 27 Aug to 25 Sep Work by Randy Klinger the founder and director of Moray Art Centre. This is the first time in 15 years that Klinger has held an exhibition in Scotland. The Exhibition is of larger works in pencil, ‘drawn paintings’, and addresses the question: ‘What happens between any two people, when the conversation terminates, when one runs out of ones ‘script’, as it were, of polite conversation? Now the jumping about in Stetsons, ponchos and pink wellies palaver is coming to a close for another year, with an apparent total absence of summer in between. Thankfully this always popular annual shindig is the perfect way to ease you into autumn and we can safely say that it won’t be snowing. Probably. Headliners for one of the nights are Magic Numbers, whose sunny melodicism went down so well when they played Bella a couple of years back. We’ll find out in early September who’s headlining the other night, so keep checking for details. Star of the bill might turn out to be comedian-turned singer Adrian Edmondson, whose Bad Shepherds take the punk tunes of his youth and deliver them in a folk style complete with mandolins and the like. It might seem peculiar, but it’s actually rather splendid and suggests that punk might be the best folk music of all. A strong line up also includes Aberfeldy, Turin Brakes, Idlewild, Silver Columns, Mt Desolation, The Vatersay Boys and Skerryvore. www.loopallu.co.uk

Two stages and a couple of dozen bands ranging from ska and punk to funk and techno, running from 2.30pm to 3am. There are no mega names on the bill, which means it’s probably going to be a whole lot more fun than the usual corporate hoo ha and we’re particularly looking forward to checking out the likes of Twisted Wheel, The Yard (reggae dubstep), We Are mars and splendidly named combinations The Amphetemeanies, The Begbies and Them Beatles. An Evening With RICK WAKEMAN @ Eden Court Empire, Mon 27 Sep Ex Yes man and archetypal prog keyboardist, Wakeman is more familiar these days for his appearances on Grumpy Old Men. There’ll be none of his gloriously overblown showmanship here, but probably plenty of grumbling about modern life as he shares anecdotes with his usual wit and just a piano for accompaniment.

BRITISH SEA POWER @ Ironworks, Mon 27 Sep Announced just as we go to press and immediately installing itself as Gig Of The Month. The Cumbrian outfit have somehow managed to make a roistering, anthemic and determinedly British rock sound. Dropping in references to everything from sea birds and Eastern European football teams to wrestlers and Polish plumbers, they hammer out soaring classics like Waving Flags and Lights Out For Darker Skies that U2 would kill to even dream about. Then lob in a bit of pastoral folk just to see what happens. There is no other act on earth who have played with both The Wurzels and krautrockers Faust, the latter made all the more spectacular since it ended in a fist fight. They’ve played by the sea on the Scilly Isles, underground in a Cornish slate mine and at the Chelsea Flower Show. At the John Betjeman Centenary Gala, they performed alongside Ronnie Corbett, Nick Cave and The Prince Of Wales. They’re very special. Don’t miss.

f you thought it was only the SPL and English Premier League that were dominated by the same teams year after year, you might want to think again when you see how half a dozen teams have ruled shinty for over 100 years. And two of the biggest names, Kingussie and Fort William meet in this year’s Camanachd Cup Final to be televised by the BBC. Fort William have surged in recent years, but Kingussie are almost as unbeatable and can lay claim to being the town where the Camanachd Association itself was born, at the Victoria Hotel on 10 Oct 1893. Four teams have won the trophy three times in a row, Newtonmore, Kingussie, Kyles Athletic and Fort William, with the last named looking for a four timer after last year’s stirring late victory over Kyles. What is more, and a rarity in any such long-lasting

Due to the rambunctious nature of the celebrations of victorious teams leaving the trophy in a fragile state,(drinking whisky from the bowl is a traditional ritual and on one occasion the trophy was abandoned and then found in Somerled Square, Portree, after Skye Camanachd’s 1990 victory, as everybody had assumed somebody else was looking after it), the board of directors at the Camanachd Association took the decision to have the trophy renovated and a replica of the trophy made for presentation after finals. The replica was to be ready for the centenary final in 2007 in Inverness but the cost of a replica was considered prohibitive and therefore the original trophy is still used. Plenty of history there then and you can expect the fixture to redefine the concept of full-blooded.

The Review: THE MARINADE 7 BRIDGE STREET INVERNESS 01463 713200 You could be forgiven for not having noticed that THE MARINADE even exists, despite it being slap-bang in the middle of town. That stretch of Bridge Street, with army recruitment office, employment bureau and Poundstretcher cheek by jowl with tartantastic tourist souvenirs and whisky suppliers is, thanks to the presence of a giant concrete box on top of it, fifty yards of brutally ugly sixties aesthetic horror. And consequently a strip that the brains of Inverness residents render invisible in a neat neurological trick to take the horror away. So The Marinade is always going to

have its work cut out to make people spot it’s there, something that isn’t helped by it having a remarkably unprepossessing frontage. Formerly the site of a coffee shop and an Indian restaurant, the impression is that somewhere in the mists of time it could well have been a doctor’s surgery or solicitor’s office, at least judging by the heavy brown front door. Menus in the window look more of an afterthought than an enticement so unless you happen to stop outside by accident – perhaps to shelter from the elements that reliably whip up a frenzy down by the riverside – you may never have spotted that there’s food on offer. And that’s a shame, because The Marinade is serving some

very fine food indeed at great value and deserves to be far more popular than (judging by the fact that only one other table is taken the day we visit) it currently is. Apparently it’s busier in the evenings, presumably as a result of tourist trade, but what it needs now is to attract locals as well, particularly during those endless winter months. It’s a rum old interior, made all the more unsettling by the fact that the strange front door opens right into its midst. When it was an Indian place it was much darker, but now it’s brightly lit with a variety of chandeliers and candelabra, exposing bare white walls and rather half-hear ted drapes. The furniture at the seven tables is 25 heavy and Gothic, which

isn’t bad in itself, but needs rather more dramatic interior decoration to really work. At the back there’s a small bar and an absolutely enormous array of sofas, taking up far more space than is entirely necessary. Most peculiar. Thankfully the restaurant does have ammunition to resist such criticism in the form of top quality nosh. As we are to find out… The lunchtime menu is just £6.95 for two courses and £8.95 for three, a price that would excuse turning out any old rubbish and still get marks for some sort of value, but whoever is in the kitchen has obviously worked out a way to combine value with skill and almost everything on the menu is appealing. The USP of the place, as its name suggests, is the use of marinades and “special pickles” to flavour the

food, unique to each dish and perhaps drawing on a Polish tradition reflecting the nationality of the people behind the place. It’s not Polish food per se, but does recognise the importance of bold flavours. The starters set the tone with some panache. For me Chicken Livers and Wild Mushrooms in a Cream Sauce, served with a Slice of Brioche and Green Leaves. It’s presented beautifully on a plate-cum-bowl, not making the usual (it has to be said, Scottish) mistake of massive por tion size just for the sake of it. There’s an admirably restrained amount of the rich, perfectly moist livers and luscious sauce, per fectly matched to the sweetness of the brioche. It’s as good a starter as I’ve had in a long time. My companion plumps for Truffle & Balsamic Glazed Vegetables

on Seasoned Wedges , another odd combination, but one which works brilliantly. Again the presentation is great, the combination of baby carrots, leek and cauliflower sitting atop baked potato wedges. The seasoning and glaze is judged to be delicious, par ticularly the (lightly pickled?) sweet cauliflower. One of the restaurant’s main selling points is that “everything is cooked from scratch”, which is fine if you’re going round to someone’s house for the day, prepared to while away the time while the chef carefully prepares something. It’s not quite as workable however when running a restaurant, meaning that with even just two of us there, the wait between starters and main course was well over half an hour. When the place is full the kitchen must go into some

sort of meltdown. Quality wise it was worth the wait, my main being Lamb Chops and Lamb Jus with Mustard Potato Puree and Cheesy Cauliflower. It’s difficult to give chops such a depth of flavour without them drying out, but these are succulent and tasty, accompanied by an uncompromisingly mustard mash. The cauliflower cheese is strange looking, but well-cooked, still retaining crunch rather than subsiding into a sloppy mess as is so often the case. My companion has Grilled Tuna Steak with Lemon and Leek Sauce, again unafraid of big flavours, this time thanks to either lemongrass or pickled lemon running through the leek sauce. The steak itself was skilfully grilled and the accompanying baby potatoes providing just the right balance. With the whole “cooked from scratch” ethos running around our heads we began to suspect that ordering pudding might set in motion a behind-the-scenes demand for getting out the eggs, flour and baking powder, but these at least seemed to have been prepared ahead of time. For me, Vanilla Cheesecake, served with strawberries and a rather sad squirt of canned cream (rather than the advertised ice cream). Nice enough, but below the standard of the first two courses. My companion’s Lemon Tart presses all the right buttons and again presentation turns something simple into a special looking dish. A good meal then, actually made all the more impressive by the unpromising surroundings. And you get the feeling that the interior/signage/ etc really have to be addressed if the place is to fulfil its undoubted potential. They needn’t worry about getting the cooking right – there are absolutely no worries on that front – but if they’re to succeed their going to have to find a way to not only make the place somewhere more appealing to actually drop into (whether by modernising or even going the whole hog on the Gothic front) and ensure that the admirable attempt to cook everything from scratch doesn’t result in such long waits for food. There is currently no drinks licence so you have to bring your own, but to their immense credit they don’t charge corkage so you can afford to treat yourself by turning up with a nice bottle. It’s a great little place and deserves to succeed. Fingers crossed it realises how to do it.

ONLY ONE CLASS OF PEOPLE CAN EVER BE SAVED namely sinners, or those who are lost. The supreme purpose for which Jesus Christ came into the world is that He might save sinners. He came to save you.. Jesus Himself declared, “I am not 9.13. come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” Matthew 9.13 All men by nature and practice are sinners, but multitudes do not salvaown nor confess that they are. For such there is no hope of salva tion. Only those who own and confess themselves lost sinners before God can be saved.

In practically everything, save Christianity, there is a great variety. Christianity is unique in every respect. There is only one Christianity and it stands alone and apart from all the religions of the world. It cannot be compared with these religions, because it has nothing in common with them. It is the only and it is supreme, just as Jesus Christ is the only and is supreme. Only one Being in all the universe has the right and power to save the lost: Jesus Christ alone can save sinners. He came into the world to save sinners; He died on the Cross to save sinners; He was raised from the dead and exalted at God’s right hand to save sinners; He is appointed to save sinners; He is proclaimed in Scripture as the Saviour of sinners; and He does save all who receive Him by faith as their own personal Saviour. He alone can save you from the power of sin, the penalty of sin and make you a new creation with a new nature and new desires. Only one way has been provided whereby sinners may be saved. That way is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” Acts 16:31. “To him that worketh not, but believeth... his faith is counted for righteousness” Romans 4:5. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” Ephesians 2:8. It is alone by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that sinners are saved. Good works, morality, baptism, joining a church, observing the Lord’s Supper and any similar things do not save you. These things are all good and right in their place but they are not a means to salvation. Salvation is not something the sinner must work out or merit, but it is provided by Christ’s redeeming work and the free gift of God to all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. The sinner cannot earn or merit salvation, he must receive it as a free gift from God. Only one thing remains for the sinner to do in order to be saved. He must turn from his sin and come to Christ, believing on Him and receiving Him to be saved. And he may freely come to Christ, since he is invited to come. Dear reader, come to the Lord Jesus, for though you have nothing to commend you to God, yet you are called, and He says, “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” John 6:37. Therefore, come as you are, and do not delay.
