A MERRY LITTLE

CHRISTMAS

The decorations you made together or with your children give a nostalgic touch any Christmas. Time dedicated to ourselves that encourages us to live in the moment. 9

10

For the children, try painting in white and gold, or using the gifts nature gives? Gather some pinecones, some picked berries, dry leaves. All you need can found outside, except for the paint of course :)

11

If you do not intend to have a pine tree, make a couple of your own projects. Find an old basket, add some pinecones and winter herbs, candles and some baubles, and the atmosphere is already there… And for those who like scents, with cloves and a couple of oranges, for a couple of DIY baubles, design your own! Maybe some wool from your grandmother, relax and enjoy crocheting some decorations for the tree. Real hedonism!

12

If you’ve more time and patience, use cardboard, coloured paper. Just be careful with the scissors. 13

DON’T MISS

We all have plans in December and January, some succeed, some don’t... wishes and possibilities are always different. Here are some suggestions for those with a hectic everyday life. 21

Part of the year is when you can enjoy picture books with children Borrow Findus at Christmas. Swedish writer Sven Nordqvist became famous with a series of picture books about the friendship between the good and patient old man Pettson and his hyperactive and spoiled cat Findus.

Story About Mala Frida plays in the Žar ptica theatre. Little Frida is a story of friendship that makes us better, it is a story of acceptance, of ourselves and others. A beautiful story about a famous artist.

Listen I Dream of Christmas is the new studio album by American singer Norah Jones. Norah Jones talks about the inspiration behind her new album I Dream of Christmas, and what the holiday season means to her.

Celebrate Winter Solstice Winter solstice celebrations honoured the symbolism of fire and light, along with life, death, the rising sun, and the moon. Create something handmade that honours the sun or the natural world, such as a wreath from what you have around your house or backyard. Paint or draw the sun. Grab an instrument you haven’t played in a long time and write a song; then share it with loved ones.

22

Eat the seasons – Almonds Fill your bowl with healthy snacks. Almonds and walnuts are a great healthy choice, and you can also use them in great recipes. For spicy roasted almonds all you need is olive oil, cayenne and salt, then bake!

Read a Book - Semezdin Mehmedinović: This time now Mehmedinović’s style is chatty, engaging, but also haunting and poetic. His descriptions of big American landscapes in the road-trip sections of the book evoke ambiguous feelings of freedom, coupled with uncertainty about the directions in which we might be going.

Tea Ceremony A different experience - Tea Ceremony - In the JING YUAN Teahouse & Bistro in Gajnice / Zagreb you can arrange a tea presentation until 31 December from Monday to Thursday and bring your family a new experience. The reservation number is 0916009743.

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL Did you know?

Here are some suggestions. Make a little home quiz and learn some facts about Christmas cards. We take you back in time!

In the period from 1895 to 1918, which we also call the golden age of postcards, the greeting card became an indispensable accompanying segment in civic customary culture. At that time, sending greeting cards for Easter, Christmas and New Year, name days, birthdays and Pentecost was considered a sign of good upbringing. Congratulations and postcards were not thrown away, but were kept in special Postkarten albums.

The origin of the written greeting card is naturally related to the appearance of the letter. At the beginning of the New Year, the ancient Egyptians wished each other happiness, hoping that the new life cycle would erase all the negativities from the previous period.

Like many modern Christmas traditions, Christmas cards date from the Victorian era. Queen Victoria sent the first official Christmas card, and Sir Henry Cole, who amongst other things was an assistant to Sir Rowland Hill in the introduction of the penny post and the first Director of the V&A, commissioned the first commercial Christmas card in 1843

The first recorded use of ‘Merry Christmas’ was in a Christmas letter sent in 1534. The first known ‘personalised’ Christmas card was sent in 1891 by Annie Oakley, the famous sharpshooter and star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show.

28

The oldest Christmas card kept in Bjelovar City Museum dates from 1903

We might think that old Christmas cards are primarily decorated with religious motifs, but by contrast most are not. Comic motifs or motifs of the Christmas tree, family, children, Santa Claus and the like often prevail.

The first official White House Christmas card was issued in 1953 by President Eisenhower.

2001 saw the world’s most expensive Christmas card when one was sold for $35,800 at auction. Victoria and Albert Museum

Prince William and Kate Middleton just debuted their family Christmas card. This year’s Cambridge family holiday card is an ode to travel.
