I’ve never been the easiest person to be around every August in Edinburgh but, this year I’ve pulled myself together and decided to live the festival through the eyes of a tourist, and I’m pretty excited. There’s the myriad of pop-ups to experience, social dining to enjoy, the sheer scale of arts shows to become immersed in and the inimitable vibe. And for a bit of guidance on what to see and do our arts correspondent, Dave Pollock, points us in the right direction with his round-up of must-see shows on page 30. Since it’s all about fun with friends in August our restaurant reviews on page 60 focus on places that serve up great sharing plates as a sociable alternative to dinner. We also check in at the new Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux at The Balmoral Hotel– read all about it on page 64. If you love fashion and interiors, top blogger Emily Murray of The Pink House questions four of her favourite social media influencers on whether they dress like they decorate. Find out what they say on page 48. Congratulations to last month’s competition winner, Bridie Gibb, who’ll be heading off to the Isle of Skye with Hidden Scotland. This month we’re offering the chance to become part of the i-on gang with 10 i-on membership cards up for grabs.

Try starters like the steak tartare, £6.95, snails in garlic and parsley butter, £5.95, or the signature French onion soup with gigantic garlic bread crouton on top, £6.50. “BONKERS ON HANOVER STREET DESERVES A SHOUT OUT – A QUIRKY SHOP WITH LOADS OF CUTE GIFT IDEAS”
Elle Exxe’s
Edinburgh 28-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Elle Exxe on her latest electro-pop song, the Grassmarket and quick escapes
Why Edinburgh? I was born in Edinburgh so didn’t have much choice in the matter! I now live between Stockbridge and Ravelston and love that it’s just a short walk into town. I’ve spent a lot of time in London over the last few years and no matter where you live it is always a long commute to wherever you want to go. In Edinburgh, I can be in the city centre in 15 minutes. What does a typical day involve? I write and record most of the time but I travel a lot and perform all over the world too. I also spend time making clothes and jewellery. Any new projects in the pipeline? I’ve just released a music video for my latest single Queen. It celebrates girl power and stars Olympic medallists Rebecca Adlington and Beth Tweddle and Paralympians Hannah Cockroft and Menna Fitzpatrick. It’s doing pretty well on social media. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? The Water of Leith. And I’m also a fan of Cramond Beach.
22
What’s the city’s best kept secret? Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult cell. She’s now on display at the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street.
Edinburgh’s best bits
Anywhere in the city that you think deserves a shout out? Bonkers on Hanover Street – a quirky shop with loads of cute gift ideas. In your opinion where’s the city’s most vibrant area? The Grassmarket. I love all the independent shops and restaurants and there’s always something going on, from markets to street performers or live music. Sum up Edinburgh in three words: Gorgeous. Friendly. Home.

Tracey McCallum does Scotland proud in Mharsanta
I
ndependent restaurant Mharsanta (pronounced VarSan-Ta) is the sister restaurant to Van Winkle opposite the Barrowlands. It fills the space in the Merchant City that Pancho Villas left long ago. Split into separate bar and dining areas, the decor is modern and unfussy and the menu is mainly Scottish featuring meat feasts like mince’n’tatties and a steak and sausage pie along with other Scottish produce. After our visit we can highly recommend the hand dived king scallops served in a lemon & herb butter with black pudding and pea puree, £7.95, and the utterly devine haggis scotch egg, £5.25, for starters. Try it. The 10oz rib eye steak with whisky sauce and hand cut chips, £21.95, and the catch of the day (halibut and crushed potatoes) for mains are just as good and a gargantuan-sized Cranachan pudding gets the Scottish seal of approval from us two lassies. Mharsanta offers great food, great service and breathes new life into this long-neglected space. 26 Bell St, G1 1LG, Tel: 0141 552 9900, mharsanta.co.uk

“IT’S A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER. I LOVE THAT THE PEOPLE ARE SO WARM AND FRIENDLY BUT ALWAYS READY TO GIVE YOU A KICK UP THE BUTT WHEN NEEDED TOO”
John Robertson’s
Glasgow The creator of lifestyle blog The Everyday Man on why Glasgow has it all
When did you move to Glasgow? I grew up in the west of Scotland and never fancied moving away as I love it here, especially Glasgow. It’s a place like no other. I love that the people are so warm and friendly but always ready to give you a kick up the butt when needed too. It’s also a good size; big enough to have loads going on but small enough to maintain a close-knit vibe.
Best thing about the city? The music scene; I love going to gigs and there is no shortage of them in Glasgow from full scale productions to small open mic nights. If there was one thing you could change about the city, what would it be? Public transport could be improved and services better integrated. A train service right to the airport would be nice too.
Glasgow’s best bits
Sum up Glasgow in three words: Real. Welcoming. Cool.
What does a typical day involve? Generally, I’m either working from home or heading off on a trip somewhere. The nature of this job means that there isn’t really a typical day as I cover such a wide range of topics and events. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? I love anywhere around Loch Lomond. It still amazes me that you can reach such stunning nature within such a short drive from the city. In your opinion where’s the city’s most vibrant area? At the moment, I’d say Finnieston. It has such a great buzz with all the cool new places and there’s still lots of new openings in the pipeline.

THEATRE
F
or anyone who wants to follow a pretty safe bet in terms of new, relevant and exciting theatre, they’re well advised to go to pretty much any show at the Traverse Theatre or Summerhall. One of the lead shows at the former, for example, is What Girls Are Made Of (Traverse, 03-26 August), in which acclaimed Scottish theatremaker Cora Bissett remembers the days when she left school and became a pop star, while Nigel Slater’s Toast (Traverse, 07 -26 August) is the Lowry’s adaptation of the celebrity chef’s revealing autobiography. Summerhall’s programme, includes First Snow/ Premiere Neige (until 26 August), a Scots-Canadian production about politics and nationalism, which involves the National Theatre of Scotland, and Gary McNair’s play After the Cuts (01 - 26 August), which imagines a future without the NHS. Edinburgh International Festival’s highlights, meanwhile, include a new version of David Greig and Gordon McIntyre’s Edinburgh-set romantic comedy Midsummer (02 - 26 August), and although the premise sounds like heavy-going, It’s True It’s True It’s True (Underbelly, 02-26 August) tells the story through court transcripts of the rape of 17th century Italian baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi through the singularly brilliant lens of the exceptional Breach Theatre.

COMEDY
T
wo returning Scottish comedy heroes are Frankie Boyle with Prometheus Vol.III (Playhouse, 07 10 August), the latest in his planned eight-hour stand-up sequence, and Limmy, whose film of his own Vines will be showing at New Town Theatre, 03 -12 August. Although he’s frequently crossed the line from comedy to theatre of late, Mark Thomas’ Check Up: Our NHS at 70 (Traverse, 04 - 26 August) still takes a stand-up format to discuss an important subject, while Ahir Shah’s Duffer (Laughing Horse at Cabaret Voltaire, 02-26 August) sees the 2017 Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee telling a story which begins with his first visit to India as an adult. From the United States, Janeane Garofalo (Gilded Balloon Teviot, 01 - 19 August) is a reliably outspoken and well-known Fringe regular, while former political advisor Ayesha Hazarika (Gilded Balloon Teviot, 02 - 11 August) introduces Girl on Girl, a show which asks who feminism belongs to these days anyway.

EXHIBITIONS
H
ighly recommended this year is Rip It Up: The Story of Scottish Pop (National Museum of Scotland, until 25 November), an entertaining and comprehensive exhibition which traces the last half century history of internationally famous pop music from this country – and there’s been a lot of it. Elsewhere, Edinburgh Art Festival (various venues, until 26 August) fills the city with a trail of intriguing exhibits and site-specific works, including new musical commissions from Ross Birrell & David Harding which explore what it is to be a refugee. And a visit to the idyllic Jupiter Artland on the outskirts of the city – including a new permanent work by Phyllida Barlow – is essential for any contemporary art lover.
BOOKS
A
s ever, Edinburgh International Book Festival is filled with intriguing guests and hugely famous people who you can’t quite believe are appearing in Edinburgh. This year, Chelsea Clinton (19 August) presents her children’s books about inspiring women, and figurehead of the #MeToo movement Rose McGowan (13 August) takes on Hollywood misogyny with her new book Brave. Local poet Michael Pederson (16 August) is also hosting a party in honour of his friend and collaborator, Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit, with guests including Hollie McNish and Withered Hand.

DO YOU DRESS LIKE YOU DECORATE? Do home décor and dress sense relate to each other? Emily Murray, founder of award-winning interiors blog The Pink House, asks four bloggers for their views…
A
t a recent colour workshop we were discussing our colour ‘personalities’ when it comes to decorating. As I watched interior designer Sophie Robinson talking about her own love of a multi-colour mash-up while wearing a beautiful rainbow skirt, I thought, ‘you’re describing how you dress, not just how you decorate’. And then I looked down at my own outfit (‘pink as f**k’ fluffy hot pink T-shirt, black skirt, mental trainers) and realised that my ‘winter’ interiors colour personality (love of extreme colours, user of black, enjoyer of controversy) was there for all to see in my wardrobe. I often find some of my best interior inspo comes from the clothes I wear. However, that’s not to say that you can’t be sure of your style and dress entirely differently to how you decorate. There are those whose homes are a riot of colour and pattern, but prefer to slip on a simple Breton stripe. So, in the spirit of research – and a desire to have a nose around some stunning homes and wardrobes – I asked a few of my fashion and interiors favourites whether their décor personality affects how they dress, and vice versa.

“I’M NOT SO FUSSED ABOUT KEEPING UP WITH THE TRENDS BUT DO LIKE TO REGULARLY UPDATE MY WARDROBE AND HOME IN A PLAYFUL WAY”
“I’m an out-and-out colour lover so I choose clothes that have bright saturated hues and lots of pattern. I’m a maximalist so there’s always plenty of oversized accessories too. I do love a large tassel earring! “When it comes to my decorating style, I also love to be playful with colour and pattern and enjoy mixing and matching. I think it makes a home feel unique and layered. I get a buzz from seeing beautifully designed textiles all jostling against one another. You cannot move on my sofa for cushions. “I totally dress in the style of my home. It’s eclectic, colourful and bright and I don’t take myself or my home decor too seriously so there is always a relaxed
element too. I’m not so fussed about keeping up with the trends but do like to regularly update my wardrobe and home in a playful way. “I think once you have found your style tribe, the way you dress and decorate do cross over. I’m passionate about people creating authentic homes that are a true reflection of them. So, once you have tapped into your own style and found your palette of colours then it makes sense that these cross over into all areas of your life. It’s all about finding what makes you happy.” sophierobinson.co.uk, @sophierobinsoninteriors on Instagram.

“I’m quite classic in my decorating style so I try to pick colours and styles that won’t necessarily date. We can’t afford to keep decorating so we’ll need to still love this in 20 years’ time. I approach my wardrobe in the same way. “However, I’ve become a lot bolder [in my decorating style] in recent years but I still don’t do brights - I love navy, grey and whites still but have experimented with different ways of using the paints lately. I love mixing it up with dark skirting boards in a light room or doing a more dramatic, totally dark room. “My dress style is classic with a twist; I love jeans but usually with a good tailored coat and a slouchy jumper - bit J Crew preppy but always with a pop of bright colour accessory. I suppose my innate sense of style runs through everything I do.
“MY DRESS STYLE IS CLASSIC WITH A TWIST; I LOVE JEANS WITH A GOOD TAILORED COAT AND A SLOUCHY JUMPER” I’m quite precise in the way I work, too - so this is reflected in my creative decorating and styling side.” “But if I could pick between fashion and furniture it would definitely be furniture. I love that it serves a purpose and you can really fill a space with something perfectly considered. There’s never really a gap in my wardrobe I ‘need’ to fill, so it’s not as satisfying (although can still be fun!).” the-frugality.co.uk @thefrugality on Instagram.

“I dress quite eclectically and wouldn’t say I had a specific look; when I like something, I wear it. Something I do absolutely love is colour, especially at home. This is the first house we have rented that I’ve felt I could really put my stamp on. “The way I dress and the way I decorate are both influenced by similar things. I wear things that inspire me and make me feel good, and the same goes for decorating. I like creating a cosy, welcoming room and surrounding myself with trinkets from travelling, art and loads of plants. I also love finding unusual, stand out pieces, whether it’s something to wear or something to sit on...” honeypopkisses.com @honeypopkisses on Instagram.

“THERE’S A STRONG PULL TOWARDS A VINTAGE, SECOND HAND THEME IN BOTH MY FASHION AND FURNISHING DECISIONS” “I’d describe my decorating style as timeless over trendy. I definitely take more risks in my dress sense. I like pairing colours that clash: pistachio green necklaces against plain pale pink tees; cobalt trousers and bright orange eyes accompanied by a hot pink lip. I feel I have the freedom to experiment a lot more with fashion and make-up because the stakes aren’t as high and the choices aren’t as permanent. When I come home I want my interior space to be neutral to calm me down. “There’s a strong pull towards a vintage, second hand theme in my fashion and furnishing decisions. In both areas, there’s a deliberate decision to not only celebrate the uniqueness of a piece but also look after the environment by moving away from massproduced over-consumption. Mostly, I think it’s because I prefer the individual charm of a second-hand piece; I imagine who might have owned it before and all the things it must’ve seen. I can become obsessed with finding furniture and will hit up Gumtree or eBay until gone midnight!” antoniamckenzie.co.uk, @antoniamckenzie on Instagram.

SHARING’S CARING For dinner with friends try these restaurants offering food that’s made to be shared
WHITE HORSE OYSTER & SEAFOOD BAR Nicky Howden goes to seafood heaven
I
n over 10 years of writing restaurant reviews I’ve become hard to please. It’s rare for me to find a restaurant that I cannot stop talking about but hats off to you White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar. I think you’ve made me fall in love. From the moody interiors, cool vibe to the menu packed with options including lobster, scallops, crab, steak and oysters, this is relaxed luxury dining at its best. The good thing here is that you can keep it informal and sit at the bar or venture through the back where you’ll find plush velvet upholstery, leather chairs and green marble tables. The restaurant serves the best of Scottish seafood and it’s renowned for its oysters and seafood platters (from £65). They’ve also just launched a Sharing Plates
“GO FOR A DATE NIGHT, GIRLIE NIGHT OR FAMILY DINNER - JUST GO. IT’S GREAT.” menu which is ideal for those of you, like me, who suffer from food envy and want a little of everything. It’s recommended you try two to three plates per person but if our choices were anything to go by then you can opt for slightly less as portions are refreshingly generous. After oysters to start, we managed four dishes but really were full to the gunnels. Recommendation wise, the lobster salad, £12.50, with whipped avocado looks picture perfect and tastes just as good. We also enjoyed the delicious crab and crayfish toast with chili, orange and avocado, £9; three skewers of succulent monkfish satay and toasted nuts, £9; and Glenarm Estate flat iron steak with chimichurri, £12.50, and a side of naughty but nice straw fries with salt and vinegar, £4, just for good measure. After a perfect serve of espresso martini, £8, to finish, and White Horse had made its way onto my list of favourite places to go in town. Dark and atmospheric, go for a date night, girlie night or family dinner - just go. It’s great. 266 Canongate, Royal Mile, EH8 8AA, Tel: 0131 629 5300, whitehorseoysterbar.co.uk.

THE STOCKBRIDGE RESTAURANT Amy Falconer puts the new lunch menu to the test
W
hen I heard The Stockbridge Restaurant was open for a weekend lunch service, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Offering classics from its evening a la carte menu – think duck confit with cassoulet bean stew, and Seared Shetland salmon – brunch favourites and new tapas sized portions, in a more relaxed, bistro setting, it seemed like the perfect way to spend a Saturday. We order an array of dishes to start – crudités and hummus, £3, crispy squid rings with alioli, smoked salmon and scrambled egg on brioche, garlic field mushrooms on toasted brioche and chorizo risotto in tapas size, £3.50 each. The standout dish for me being the smoky, chorizo risotto and my friend’s was the smoked salmon and scrambled egg. For mains, my dining partner orders a Smashin’ eggs omlette with wild mushrooms and chorizo, £7, while I opt for
the duck confit with cassoulet bean stew, £9. While his isn’t anything special in the looks department I’m assured the delicate flavours are bang on the money. My duck was melt in the mouth. The bed of beans with the rich, deep gravy is knock out and utterly heavenly served with the buttery mash. We finish off the meal with sticky toffee pudding in butterscotch sauce, £9, and the cake of the day, lemon drizzle, £4.50. All of that along with their delicious sensational Bloody Marys and The Stockbridge Restaurant is firmly on our weekend brunch list. H
aving been first in line at its opening back in February and regularly heard raving about the skewers of sizzling meats upon which it has built its reputation, I was intrigued to see how Fazenda’s Petiscos menu (made up of small plates and dishes) would match up. So it was to George Street that my dining partner and I headed, seated in the sunshine and eagerly awaiting what was to come. Priced between £4- £6, the dishes are designed for sharing and hungry bellies. We kick things off with Churrasco - a taster selection of mixed grill meats straight off the main menu. Mouth-wateringly delicious and served on a miniature BBQ keeping the meats sizzling. We follow up with Moquca De Mexilhao (mussels in a coconut and bisque sauce) and the Bauru sandwich. The mussels are a seriously hearty portion, spiced to perfection and a real standout dish. The sandwich satisfies with layer upon layer of Picanha beef speared with a kitchen knife (yes, really). Presentation alone won over our respective Instagram feeds, the taste test already surpassed on first bite. The Petiscos menu (only available in the bar and outside terrace) is perfect for those who appreciate what Fazenda is all about: big flavours, succulent meats and Brazilian flair, providing a well-pitched alternative for diners looking for a lighter offering. One last word of advice: leave room for the churros. 102 George St, EH2 3DF, Tel: 0131 215 1234, fazenda.co.uk/Edinburgh.

BRASSERIE PRINCE Jo Morris dines like a royal at The Balmoral’s newest addtion
T
he Balmoral is more than just a hotelit’s an iconic landmark, representing and dominating the heart of the city. And it now has the brasserie it deserves. Fans of its Michelin-starred restaurant, Number One, may argue that it’s always had the perfect culinary representation of its status. But for a more casual dining experience, the new Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux is a very welcome change from its predecessor, Hadrian’s, in both style and management. The Rocco family, who owns the Balmoral, has joined with another family dynasty, Michel and Alain Roux, and transformed the space into the French-styled brasserie; relaxed, refined with a generous wine list, friendly and knowledgeable waiting staff, and some classic French dishes. The flow from bar to restaurant is seamless and the feeling is of every day decadence and accessible dining. This is a place you’d be happy to book for lunch, dinner and birthdays, particularly if you have a penchant for French classics such as Bouillabaisse, sautéed frogs’ legs Provençal, Coq au vin and steak tartare.

We were in for a working lunch which was quickly upscaled to a Champagne lunch when we spotted the Balmoral smoked salmon and halibut platter, £25, and Isle of Skye langoustines, £22. Since we were in a sharing kind of mood, these dishes worked really well, as did the Greek salad, £11, and the house fries, £4.50. All fresh, delicious and ideal for a summer’s day. There is a buzz about Brasserie Prince that was missing from its old incarnation. This is a classic brasserie with a classic menu to match, served up with an efficiency you’d expect from the Roux family. As the city continues to see a proliferation of very decent places to eat, Brasserie Prince earns its stripes for restaurants at the top of their game. BIT AT THE BACK
“SONGS OFTEN COME TO ME ON A RAINY DAY SO I HAVE ALL MY GUITARS ON A RACK AT HOME JUST IN CASE I HAVE A LIGHTBULB MOMENT!”
WHEN DOES YOUR ALARM GO OFF? It changes every day. It depends how late I’ve been up the night before making music. Sometimes 5.30am, sometimes 11am. The first thing I do is sneeze. Every time. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVE? Get showered, get ready, pack my rucksack (laptop, hard drives, camera etc), make sure the cat has enough food, go. I usually skip breakfast. Terrible, I know. A latte or Yorkshire tea is normally enough; a banana if I’m treating myself. It’s then a morning of emails and prioritising what needs doing. After that it’s thinking about having lunch, followed by lunch… and more coffee. I’ll then write up ideas for a music/lyric video, reply to more emails, record a vlog, hopefully live stream an acoustic performance and chat with management. WHERE DO YOU WRITE MUSIC? I’m based in Leeds so I either write in a studio there (usually Song Mason Studios) with my producer Ben and other musicians, or by myself at home, in my front room. Songs often come to me on a rainy day so I have all my guitars on a rack at home just in case I have a lightbulb moment.

CAREER HIGHLIGHT? Having two number one singles in South East Asia. It still blows my mind to say that.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… Hannah Trigwell, YouTube sensation, guitarist, singer and songwriter
BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? Making music and meeting awesome people. WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? The admin.
WHEN YOU FINISH RECORDING MUSIC VIDEOS, WHAT DO YOU DO? Eat - my wife is a great cook, which helps because I love food but don’t enjoy cooking. I’ll then watch something on Netflix and try to distract my mind from thinking about music. WHAT TIME DO YOU GO TO BED? Usually about 11pm. I don’t watch anything in bed because it gets my brain going and if I have anything on my mind it’ll keep me up for hours. IN 10 YEARS TIME… I’d like to still be making music and performing around the world but also helping others make a music career, and maybe be a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race?! Hannah releases her debut album, Red, on 31.08.18. See her perform live at The Old Hairdresser’s, Glasgow, on Sunday 02 September.
