ur wedding special proved so popular last year with readers and local businesses that we’re doing another one in our next issue of i-on, out on Friday 20 December 2013. So if you’re in the thralls of planning your big day or are planning a proposal in the not so distant future, the i-on wedding special will be packed full of ideas to inspire. elcome to the last official i-on of 2013 (we’re back late December with our wedding special) and what a year it’s been. Here at i-on towers, this year has seen us welcome new babies, new marriages and new team members to our fold so 2013 has been a great year for us. It’s a trend we hope will continue into 2014, which, of course, promises to be a huge year for Glasgow too. As well as the Commonwealth Games there’s all year round entertainment in the city and we’ve put together a handy month by month guide to make sure you don’t miss a thing starting on page 24. We also take a look at the fitness activity of the moment, Nordic walking, on page 62, and catch some of the city’s revellers on camera in our extended i-on events feature starting on page 56. We’ve also got into the festive spirit with a generous dash of Christmas related content including our annual Christmas gift guide on page 30, décor inspiration (p78) and even some food for thought on page 88. You’ll find out how to enter our fabulous competition to win a £500 shopping experience at ROX on page 06. And huge congratulations to Catrina Carr, the winner of a VIP night at Scottish Ballet from our last issue. We hear a great night was had by all our runners-up too. Until our first issue of 2014. 12 | TALKING ABOUT

Talking About Movember

Movember? That’s that moustache thing, isn’t it? If you mean one of the most successful and inspired global charity campaigns in recent years, then yes, it’s that moustache thing. OK, so what’s the official lowdown then? Movember started in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003 and challenges men to grow a moustache for the 30 days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health. Mo Bros, as they are known, sign up for the challenge on the official Movember website in October and then on the 1st of November, with a clean-shaven face, start their Mo growing journey. For the entire month, they effectively become walking, talking billboards. Through their growing efforts they raise awareness for the often ignored issues of men’s health, by prompting conversations wherever they go.

How much money has it raised? To date, over £276M, with the Movember Foundation supporting world class men’s health programmes focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer and mental illness. It also helps fund research to achieve an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. I’m inspired. Is it too late to take part? Not if you’re quick. You can register at www.movember.com until the end of October. However if you’re not convinced you’ll be able to grow a tache or if you’re of the female persuasion, a Mo Sista, you can get involved by donating cash or taking part in Movember related fund raisers such as the MoRunning 5K and 10K at Glasgow Green on 09 November. Visit www.mo-running.com for more info.

sk anybody with an ear on the mainstream and they’ll tell you that English duo Disclosure are the saviours of British dance music for the new decade. Those of more underground tastes might beg to differ, but there are probably few who’ll confess to a dislike for their infectious sound, which dates all the way back to the late ‘80s birth of house music in Chicago. If proof of just how unifying the sound they make were needed, the fact their debut album Settle went to number one in the UK charts shortly after its release back in June is it. Born in Surrey and raised in leafy Reigate, brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence haven’t exactly had as glamorous an origin

as the style of music they’ve adopted, although they’ve both moved to Croydon in South London in their older years. Not that either of them is that old – Guy is 22 and Lawrence is 19, and they’ve both been in business together as Disclosure for the last three years. Their starting to work together as musicians was almost an accident, with Howard making very simple tracks at home and Guy offering to mix them, having done an entry level music production class at college. They describe what they do as a learning process right from day one up to now, although the pair had a perfect cross section of influences to make them interesting and relevant to the moment. Guy grew up on hip-hop like Gang Starr, Busta Rhymes and A Tribe Called Quest, Howard listened to Motown, ‘70s funk and Kate Bush, and in the middle their tastes met with the dubstep explosion of a few years back. But the duo have

the ultimate Christmas shopping experience Join us for our Christmas lights switch on and fireworks over the Loch on Sunday 17th November never considered themselves underground, with an acute pop sensibility that this melting pot of sounds helped create. They readily admit that those early productions weren’t up to the standard of their latest sounds, with 2010’s Offline Dexterity and 2011’s double A-side Carnival/I Love… That You Know creating barely a ripple. Yet during this time they built up a bit of under the radar momentum with remixes for artists like Everything Everything, Crystal Fighters, Q-Tip and Emeli Sande, and finally broke to the wider world in 2012 with their remix of Jessie Ware’s Running and their top twenty single Latch. This year they’ve been drawing acclaim as the crossover act of 2013, and such a reputation’s founded as much upon the fact that tracks like F For You and When a Fire Starts to Burn are built on killer hooks and an irresistible feel for the sounds of two decades of dance history as their timely collaborations. Their releases are like a tour through all that’s best in pop in 2013, from AlunaGeorge on White Noise to Eliza Doolittle on You & Me and London Grammar amidst the epic Help Me Lose My Mind, and it’s a sound which has taken Disclosure rapidly to the forefront. Disclosure play the O2 Academy, Glasgow, on Wednesday 20 November.

om Kennett is the founder and MD of Kennett, the designer watch brand he created in 2008 after being inspired to create a watch as a unique gift for his father’s 60th birthday. Kennett is now one of the brightest names in timepieces, exporting to over 10 countries worldwide with 28-year-old Tom still at the helm at Kennett’s HQ in Hillington.

What gives Glasgow its spark? Glasgow is a great size – a city with a town feeling, everyone tends to be connected to everyone. I love the fact you can get around the city easily without too much traffic or hassle and you can get out of the city to the country or coast in half an hour. Favourite areas of the city? I love Princes Square and Buchanan Street at Christmas. I tend to head out in the West End at weekends as you are spoilt for choice of bars and restaurants and I can walk home when the night is done. Is there anything that would place Glasgow more firmly on the map? I live at Lancefield Quay and I think The SSE Hydro is going to confirm Glasgow as a city of entertainment. The Commonwealth Games are going to bring a great buzz to the city too, although I wish Glasgow was easier for visitors to get to with more direct international flights. If there’s one thing you could change about the city, what would it be? I think it would be great if the areas around the River Clyde were more developed with nightlife and tourist attractions. The Quayside in Newcastle is a great example to follow. Where’s the best place to go on a Sunday? Tribeca or The Left Bank for a good leisurely brunch.

MUSIC

Stephanie Manns photo Susie Lowe

C

ountry/folk singer-songwriter Stephanie Manns started her musical career in Jersey becoming a regular on the acoustic music scene. Since moving to Glasgow she’s done exactly the same here. With songwriting heavily influenced by Missy Higgins, Ingrid Michaelson and Jill Jackson, Stephanie’s style ranges from playfully wistful tunes to the melancholic heartbreak that strikes at the core of country musicians. How long have you been involved in the music industry? About 5 years. It was on my bucket list to do an open-mic before I was 30. I did one when I was 23 and realised that what I got from performing far out-weighed the nerves so I carried on. A couple of months later I was asked to open for Joan Armatrading on her tour. What’s the best aspect about what you do? Gigging. It’s the uncontrollable, unplanned nature of it, and the buzz you get from it.

Where is the city’s best music venue? King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, both to play and to see an artist in an intimate setting. Most importantly, your feet don’t stick to the floor. Stephanie’s new EP Sweethearts & Angels is available on iTunes.

ith over 30 years in the catering business, chef Andrea Ferrier has been a part of Di Maggio’s culinary team for the past 14 years. From his scholarship with Holiday Inn in the ‘70s to owning his own business in Pollokshaws, Andrea’s career has taken him across the UK, bringing the skills he’s learnt to be an integral part of the Di Maggio’s family. What’s the most loved dish at the restaurant? Without a doubt, lasagne. It’s an all time favourite with our customers and it’s made with the finest of ingredients helping to maintain its status as one of our most loved dishes. Most over-rated ingredient? Truffles. I can’t help but think that they’re an over indulgence. Most under-rated ingredient? Celery; it’s one of the most useful ingredients that you can have in your kitchen. What’s the most stressful dinner you’ve ever cooked? A conference meal attended by Margaret Thatcher.

s the owner of Wish Boutique, Glasgow’s city centre Mecca of gorgeous gowns, every day is a red carpet day for Pam McKay. With a dressmaker great aunt and a grandfather with a number of Drapers shops, the rag trade is in Pam’s blood and perhaps that’s why she’s one of the city’s most trusted retailers for customers looking for the perfect gown for a premiere, party or prom or those simply wanting to shine on a Saturday night. I’d describe my style as… always a dilemma. One day classy chic, the next boho hippy. My favourite designer is…from the past, Barbara Hulanicki of Biba and in the present day, Alber Elbaz at Lanvin. When it comes to style I think it is important to… dress appropriately for the occasion. In the fashion sense I don’t really like… the exposed cleavage and legs combo – even Rihanna struggles to pull that off.

trieD anD teSteD Supercar Driving Experience words Stu Todd

T

here’s always someone that falls into that hard to buy for category. I thought I was one of them. But after being gifted a Gift Experience Scotland voucher for a supercar driving experience, I was given the chance to get behind the wheel of a car I’d only ever dreamed of driving. On arrival at Ingliston race track, I was greeted by two friendly faces who talked me through the stages of the experience which included filling in insurance forms, a very important security briefing, choosing my vehicle and any added extras; one was an on board camera which captures both the track in front of the car and the driver and, as a fantastic keepsake to commemorate the day, there was a dedicated photographer out on the track to frame my perfect lap. From the option of a Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari 360, Audi R8, Aston Martin DB9, and a guest car in the form of a £250K Ferrari 458, I opted for the Lambo and the Audi R8.

SUPERCAR DRIVING EXPERIENCE | 29

As a confident but not accomplished driver, I don’t mind telling you that I was slightly nervous at having a Lamborghini at my finger tips and getting my head around paddle shifting instead of a gear box and no clutch was confusing. But the instructors were top notch and the controls so intuitive, I was soon speeding around corners, braking late then speeding out of the corners again. The feeling of exhilaration was only further enhanced when I stepped in to another of my dream vehicles - the Audi R8. My experience closed with what is called a hot lap, where I was taken on a two lap joy ride by a ‘Stig’ in the choice of either a Caterham 7 or an Ariel Atom. These cars have the equivalent power of a World Rally Car (300bhp +) and those two laps were the motoring equivalent of the best rollercoaster ride of your life. A real ride to remember. Nordic Walking words Susan Storie

T

he first time I saw a Nordic Walker was on a bright sunny day in the Southside’s Queens Park and my instant reaction was that they are in the wrong park - the dry ski slope being at Bellahouston. It wasn’t until I saw a group of walkers, poles at the ready, a few months later that I realised they couldn’t all be lost so approached to ask what they were up to. “Nordic walking” came the response in unison as they strode on by. Running, not walking, is my fitness thing, but, in the winter months, especially when they come with snow and ice, my runs are not much fun, mostly for fear of slipping and doing myself some serious damage. Very often I give up on a run before I get any benefit so I got to thinking Nordic walking could be the way forward. First developed in Finland in the thirties as a summer training exercise for its cross-country skiing national team, it’s hugely popular in Northern Europe, with three million Nordic walkers in Germany alone. It was actually a Germanic connection that got Glasgow-based Nordic walking instructor Dagmar Lages hooked on the activity: “I was introduced to Nordic walking by my mum who lives in Germany. She has been doing it for years and I was always curious how effective it is,” explains Dagmar. “About four years ago I booked a class in Kelvingrove Park, tried it about three times until the instructor told us she was moving back to Greece. I really enjoyed it so completed my level 2 instructor course in 2010 and since then I’ve been on a mission to convince Glaswegians about the positive effects of Nordic walking.” Mimicking cross-country skiing, which is widely believed to be the toughest, most calorie-burning exercise there is, the health benefits of walking the Nordic way include lowering blood pressure and BMI as well as helping ward off osteoporosis.

NORDIC WALKING | 63

From a fitness front, if done properly, Nordic walking burns up to 40 per cent more calories than ordinary walking and by landing the poles with an outstretched arm, creating a full body movement, Nordic walkers use 90 per cent of the body's skeletal muscles so you’re guaranteed a great cardio workout. If that sounds too exhausting, you’ll be pleased to know that the poles propel the walker along, making it easier to move faster than normal but, bizarrely, without feeling the effort. But before you grab a set of sticks and head for your nearest park, it’s wise to get some expert tuition in as, despite being easy to do, there is some technique to master. “For most people it is not an obvious way of exercising and there’s a technique to using the poles, so good instruction is important,” explains Eleanor Brown of Nordic Adventures Scotland. She runs two hour workshops for beginners, at the end of which attendees should walk away with the basics of Nordic walking but it generally takes four to six weekly classes to really feel the benefits and grasp the technique. Despite the apparent ease of Nordic walking, regular exercisers shouldn’t think it’s simply a walk in the park as even the fitness fanatics can benefit by upping the speed and inclines on their walks. Another thing no doubt propelling the popularity of Nordic walking is the small initial outlay. For your first few sessions no specialist equipment is required as instructors tend to supply the poles. All you need is a good pair of lightweight shoes or trainers with a flexible sole and a wind and waterproof jacket. But even if you catch the Nordic walking bug and want to practice it on your own, a quality pair of poles will only set you back around £50-£90; a bit of a bargain when you consider gym membership costs, and they’re there for the taking whenever you have the urge to get up and go Nordic.

n need of a bit of revival, I placed my tired bones in the healing hands of Natalie, a therapist at the Spa at Blythswood Square, for a hot stone massage using the spa’s new mineral rich product range, ishga. As I lay on the hot stones that eased all tension from my body, Natalie drizzled a seaweed based oil onto my skin, which had the gorgeous uplifting scent of lemongrass. It felt so silky and nourishing and Natalie explained that ishga sustainably hand harvests Scottish seaweed to produce a 100 per cent organic ingredient for the range and that the seaweed content in their products is one of the highest on the market. After enjoying the luxurious massage on my legs and arms, Natalie worked the hot stones expertly over my body and as the treatment ended I felt relaxed but invigorated and my skin felt amazing. I was advised to keep the oil on overnight as the seaweed and essential oils work on the body for up to 24 hours. That night I slept like a log and awoke to the softest skin ever. The treatment featured costs £80 for 55 minutes and for information on the product range and treatments visit www.blythswoodsquare.com

he old saying ‘as one door closes, another one opens’ certainly rings true for Carla McCann. It was only when a property she had been pursuing was taken off the market that she went on to find her current home in one of Glasgow’s most desirable locations, Dowanhill. “We had already sold our family home and basically had to find something else as soon as possible. “I found this apartment purely by chance, discreetly advertised in the GSPC newspaper I had picked up in my bank to pass the time whilst waiting in a very long queue.” That wait was well worthwhile as Carla, along with husband Gary, 16-year-old daughter Lauryn, 14-year-old son Cal and Nina

I-ON HOMES | 71

and Chica, the family’s West Highland terriers, have been calling this stunning Queens Gate apartment home since May 2012. “My husband and I viewed it on a whim as we weren’t looking for this type of home but thought ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’. “I’m glad we did as when we entered through the door, we were blown away by the huge hallway, the mantled doors, the beautiful intricate cornicing, the high ceilings and feature cupola - we instantly fell in love with it.” Despite the apartment being very well maintained by the previous owners, Carla, who has a passionate interest in property developing, was keen to put her own stamp on it. The result was a huge renovation project involving the walls being stripped back and replastered, ceilings replastered, rewiring, new plumbing, new bathrooms, new kitchen installation, and new flooring.

Favourite Room Our formal lounge as it has a cosy, old library feel to it with all the dark wood original panelling. The natural fire, when lit, is simply wonderful and throws a warming light onto the room creating a fabulous ambience. Hallway When we first entered the apartment, we were blown away by the huge hallway, the mantled doors, the beautiful intricate cornicing, the high ceilings and feature cupola - we instantly fell in love with it.

“Really, it’s had a full face-lift,” says Carla. “The changes here have been purely cosmetic and decorative, as the building is Class B listed so major alterations are a no-no. “The bare bones of this apartment are outstanding and we have decorated it in a simple and sympathetic manner, allowing the features to talk for themselves. This house now feels like our home, it feels very ‘us’.” Having moved home on several occasions - this is the family’s sixth home - Carla’s clearly not daunted about taking on a project and, if anything, would prefer to buy a property that requires a degree of work as she enjoys the challenge of transforming it and has amassed a team of excellent tradesmen she uses religiously on her renovations. On the furniture front Carla’s pieces have been collected over the years with pieces from small antique stores, large furniture stores such as Laura Ashley, Dwell, and John Lewis

to interior designer speciality shops. “Our interiors are therefore a ‘bit of a mixed bag’,” says Carla, “with nothing too staged or structured - a relaxed sense of design creates a relaxing home.” Relaxing home or not, you can’t help but feel that Carla’s not satiated that property hunger in her belly so should i-on revisit in a year would we see more changes? “No more changes to this home but I am a firm believer of the saying, ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’, so our next project/home is possibly just around the corner.”

Décor I like to use dark earthy tones on the walls as they allow the mood within a room to change throughout the day and help create a sense of design that is seamless in the sense that each room is very different but somehow they all ‘fit together’ with the theme flowing throughout.

With a star on top

Many a normal, sane person has hit the mulled wine in a sobbing mess at the prospect of decorating a simple Christmas tree. To save you from this fate, the team at Annie Mo’s offers a few golden rules to make sure your tree is more ‘Ta-da!’ than ‘Bah Humbug’… Christmas tree lights

Frasers

Franklin Sofa

When it comes to lights, the more the merrier. A four metre strand of lights doesn’t go far. Begin at the bottom of the tree and aim to create depth and height. Tuck them into the tree, creating little ‘grottos’ of light you can dress later. Always leave one last light to illuminate the star or fairy.

WITH A STAR ON TOP | 81

Decorations Christmas is for kids so encourage youngsters to make decorations. For a homely touch try adding strands of popcorn, a traditional American decoration. Start at the bottom with larger baubles and work your way round the tree adding different sizes and textures. Some of the larger packs of baubles have at least two sizes and textures to play with. If you’re adding tinsel to your tree, make sure you go for the chunky stuff rather than half bare threads. For non tinsel fans, try wired ribbon. Available in a variety of widths, the wire allows you to create a lovely waterfall effect and to tie nice fat bows.

Topping off No matter how a tree is dressed it’s never finished without paying attention to the top. Whether it’s a vintage fairy taking pride of place or a big glittering star, whatever your choice, it should always be the crowning glory on your Christmas tree.

Iconic Glasgow The Botanic Gardens Garage words Helen Kendrick and Beth Greenaway

B

uilt around 1912 specifically for parking, the Botanic Gardens Garage in Hillhead’s Vinicombe Street is Glasgow’s oldest surviving motor garage and with its distinctive façade of green and white glazed terracotta blocks it’s very much a local icon. When the garage was built in the early 1900s, on street parking was not allowed and local residents had to rely on privately-built parking garages – many of which also provided petrol, maintenance and repair services. To cater for this need, livery stables and other buildings were often converted for use as garages, but purpose-built structures like that in Vinicombe Street were more unusual and very few still exist. Recognising this rarity, in 2007 Historic Scotland upgraded the garage’s listing from category B to A, officiating its national importance. In fact, there is some debate as to whether this is the world’s first multi-storey car park; the earliest known multi-story car park in the US was built for the Hotel La Salle in Chicago in 1918 but Glasgow’s precedes it by several years.

Since its closure there have been several failed past attempts at redevelopment, but new plans have recently been submitted which could see this category-A listed building reinvent itself as a food shop and community space. “The garage is iconic, both architecturally and socially, and it’s a fascinating piece of local history,” says local historian Gordon Urquhart. “It is also, in a way, the ‘last piece of the puzzle’ for redevelopment in this immediate area; with Oran Mor just behind, the old Hillhead Picture Salon (Hillhead Bookclub) right opposite and the Western Baths around the corner all being restored and regenerated in recent years it will be wonderful to see the garage secure a sustainable future too.” Glasgow City Heritage Trust works in partnership with heritage, conservation and community groups across the City to promote and facilitate the preservation of our historic built landscape; for more information visit their website on www.glasgowheritage.org.uk

ew celebration drinks beat an expertly crafted cocktail. And getting creative with cocktails at home is surprisingly easy. All it takes is an equal mix of patience and practice, although a strong constitution also helps if you’re indulging in the alcoholic variety. More good news is you don’t even need to invest in a cocktail kit. Get creative in the kitchen and use an egg cup as your measure, a flask as your shaker, a wooden spoon as a muddler and a flour sieve as your strainer. These utensils may not look the part but they will do the business. One of the best and easiest cocktails to recreate is the award-winning 56 Degrees Martini, created by Booly Mardy’s Alec Dyson and David Smillie for Mamont Vodka’s Everest Challenge. Simply take 50ml Mamont Vodka, 15ml single malt Speyside whisky, 15ml Cocchi Americano wine aperitif and two dashes of Absinthe, stir with ice, strain into a Martini glass and sit back and savour. eing a great fan of Japanese food, but not necessarily the canteen style of eating and seating, I was intrigued to stumble across the Nippon Kitchen on West George Street. Opened only recently, this is the sister restaurant to Nanakusa on Sauchiehall Street which is a bit of a favourite of mine so I was optimistic that good taste would run in the family. Housed in a Grade A listed building, Nippon Kitchen has the look and feel of a traditional establishment with smart wood panelled walls and high ceilings. The décor is an unusual fusion of Japan and Glasgow but it works. The menu offers a range of rice and noodle dishes along with Asian favourites. However, the made to order sushi is the main star of the show with a Sushi Master creating his magic in the heart of the restaurant. A joy to watch. Debating whether to play safe or go ‘native’, we were offered some suggestions by our

knowledgeable waitress and shared a mixed tempura, £7.50, and the soft shell crab kara-age, £6, to start. The tempura was served beautifully, like an exotic flower arrangement with three huge succulent king prawns and vegetables in the lightest batter, served along with a dipping sauce. The soft shell crab which was new for both of us was a real hit. Although my dining companion wasn’t completely convinced about eating the legs, she gave it a try and we both agreed the delicate white meat under the light batter was a great combination and one we’d choose again. On discovering the fish for the sushi and sashimi comes from MacCallum’s of Troon every day, I couldn’t resist the Nippon sashimi moriawase, £17.90, for my main. It was almost too good to eat with a stunning arrangement of salmon, tuna, mackerel, sea bass, cuttle fish, surf clams and flying fish roe on what looked like a tropical island. The slivers of fish were glistening fresh with plenty

wasabi on the side. My chum chose what I considered the safe option of the chicken bento box, £12.50, but what a feast that turned out to be. First up, a bowl of steaming miso soup, swiftly followed by three pieces of chicken maki, and then the bento box with compartments of chicken teriyaki, crispy chicken gyoza, chicken negima, steamed rice and Japanese pickles. If you’re feeling hungry this is a great option. Despite still feeling full, we decided that it would be a waste of an experience not to have a look at the dessert menu. I opted for banana tempura, £4.50, and my friend the green tea ice cream, £3.50. The banana tempura was completely as expected, sweet and sticky and served with an indulgent scoop of vanilla ice cream. Green in colour and served with a sprinkling of sweet red beans, the green tea ice-cream is an acquired taste that my friend was happy to have tried. In addition to the food, Nippon Kitchen also offers a wide range of Japanese beers, sake, plum wines and some Japanese inspired cocktails. Unfortunately, as we were both driving we couldn’t sample any of these but that does give us another excuse to return. Next time, without the car and maybe wearing something elasticated around the waist. Nippon Kitchen, 91 West George St, G2 1PB, Tel: 0141 328 3113.
