04 | INTRODUCTION

DID YOU KNOW...?

i-on Glasgow this month We’re on the lookout for properties to feature in our i-on Homes section. If you’ve taken on a renovation project or have a stylish home you’d like to showcase, send an email with a few pictures to info@ionmagazine.co.uk. Whether it’s retro, modern or traditional, we’d love to hear from you.

There’s nothing better when the weather begins to heat up and the light nights start taking root than a leisurely lounge in the garden, cheeky glass of ice cold Picpoul de Pinet in hand and the accompanying spring sounds of drills, hammers and the odd sledgehammer tearing up your home - at least that’s the current story at casa Cormack Bruce. So Lizzie Ford’s look at this year’s hot interiors trends on page 24 is of particular personal interest for lots of décor inspiration. If the night always ends too early for you, we take a look at some late night restaurants in our Take Three feature on page 64 while Victoria Martin tries the healthy but hearty fare at Wudon (p60). Our competition prize in this issue is definitely for girls who like to sparkle. We’re offering a £500 shopping spree at Thomas Sabo Glasgow on page 06. Congratulations also to Desiree Atkinson, the winner of our last competition for dinner for four at The Honours. Enjoy the experience, Desiree. Until next time, enjoy i-on.

YOUNG FATHERS words ∙ David Pollock

A

few days prior to time of writing, a huge billboard on Leith Walk in the heart of Young Fathers’ home city Edinburgh displayed the simple, strikingly contentious advert for their new album. In dark blue against a blood red background it declared ‘White Men Are Black Men Too’ (the title of the record), a statement which seems designed to confuse and provoke in equal measure. What can it all mean? Refreshing but rare in contemporary music, Young Fathers are unafraid to confound and to challenge. Early evidence of this came last year, having won the 2014 Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award for their extended EP Tape Two and followed it up with the bookie-confounding Mercury Prize win for the debut album Dead which made their name. Dressed sharply and seemingly resilient to offering a smile for the latter event, the trio (Alloysius ‘Ally’ Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham ‘G’ Hastings) refused to play the

red carpet attention-grabbing game for the next morning’s papers, their answers as monosyllabic as their demeanour was disinterested. To entertainment journos keen to fill the column inches or the online pages, of course, this seemed like a truculent pose which was too clever-clever to take seriously. To anyone watching who liked the thought that musicians could still mess with the format of their public appearance, however, it was an indication that these guys could be a cut above. Their next steps backed that idea up; rather than milk the album for which they’d become famous for months on end, and then retire off to think about their next move at leisure, they packed up their draughty Leith basement studio, decamped to Berlin and had the next album recorded and ready to go within six months. Much like Dead, it’s a record which doesn’t try hard to fit into any pre-designed

genre, marrying eclectic samples and grooves with oblique, powerfully-delivered lyrics which mix together the personal and the political with thoughts of race and class in a manner which doesn’t beat the listener over the head. From the days when they met at underage rap night Lick Shot at Edinburgh’s old Bongo Club on New Street, now demolished, to their early life as rap-pop group 3-Style, Young Fathers have taken the long way round to recognition, and they’re not falling into line now they’ve caught people’s ears. That they’re supporting Paul Weller on his arena tour later this year says much about where they want to be, not as an underground concern, but as a futurist pop group who might lead new audiences in unexpected directions. Young Fathers play The Art School on Wednesday 20 May 2015.

photo ∙ SNS Group/SRU

James Eddie is one of the most popular members of the Glasgow Warriors squad. He lives in Shawlands with his fiancee, Nadine, and their two dogs, Foxy and Coco. Off the rugby pitch where are we most likely to find you? My family has the oldest family run fish merchants in Glasgow, started by my grandfather in 1925. I’m there helping out my dad on most of my days off as I will go into the business when I retire from rugby. It will be a shock to the system starting work at 2am though. What gives Glasgow its spark? I played for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens which was an amazing experience. The Games really showed Glasgow and its people at their best - the city really came alive. What’s the city’s must see attraction? Kelvingrove has the wow factor. I hadn’t been there since I was a child until the last Scottish Style Awards. We are so lucky to have a place like that in our city. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? I love going to Loch Lomond. It’s such a chill out and the scenery is unbelievable, so is the wildlife – from capercaillies to deer and even wallabies.

Around the city - Where you’ll find me Enjoying a coffee: Café Gizzi’s in Shawlands - best coffee in the Southside. Lunch with friends: Nandos. Dinner with family: The Fish People Cafe. Living it up: Ashton Lane.

BEAUTY Lynsey C Reilly photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As a professional make-up artist, Lynsey C Reilly’s client list includes funny girl Ashley Jenson and the super fierce Rita Ora, adding a serious dose of glitz to the daily graft. Here she opens up her beauty box with i-on. Top beauty essentials? I use Bare Minerals facial cleansing oil from the Mineralixir range. For contouring, it’s Tom Ford’s Shade & Illuminate; I prefer creams to powders for a more natural contouring effect. I love MAC’s Cream Colour Base in Pearl as a highlighter; it catches the light beautifully. What’s your hero skincare product? Estée Lauder’s Daywear Sheer Tint. It leaves skin glowing. Favourite salon? Love Those Lashes on St. George’s Road for the Russian Volume lash. I always believe if your lashes, hair and skin look good, you need nothing else. Who is your go-to beauty expert in the city? Julia MacMillan at Mesart Hair for hair extensions. She has perfected her craft and is unbelievably passionate about what she does. Best new product you’ve recently tried? A body lotion called Prtty Peaushun (pronounced ‘pretty potion’). They sent me their products for Rita Ora when I was working with her and it made her skin glow amazingly on stage. Beauty no-no? Bad brows. There are so many great salons now so there is no excuse.

STYLE

Samantha Harvie photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Fashion and style have always been a passion for Samantha Harvie and it’s a love affair she gets to embrace on a daily basis at her chic West End boutique, Solo. As well as working the shop floor, Samantha personally liaises with designers and brands such as Lomberto Losani, Too Shy and Marc Cain to ensure her customers are always dressed to impress. I’d describe my style as… classic with a sassy twist. The person whose style I most admire is… Olivia Palermo. She always looks amazing. My favourite designer at the moment is… Eileen Fisher. Her clothes are casual, elegant and offer sophistication, comfort and style that lasts. My favourite recent find was… my parka from Marc Cain. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. I’ve got a thing about… coats. You can never have too many coats. My best fashion bargain ever was… my Finest Seven sunglasses. I got them through a friend for a really good price. The trend I’m definitely not buying into is… urban hiking boots. My favourite style/fashion quote is… Coco Chanel’s ”A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” In the fashion sense I don’t really like… looking like you’ve tried too hard. My big fashion no-no is… over accessorising. My fashion tip for 2015 is… quality not quantity.

PROPERTY

Andrew Mickel photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Andrew Mickel is a fourth generation family member and director with Mactaggart & Mickel Homes. Currently residing in Bearsden as part of ‘generation rent’ he is planning an imminent return to the property ladder in the West End of the city. What do you look for in a property? For me, it has to be adaptable for family life and offer space and flexibility of rooms. If you were to move tomorrow, where would you move to? West End all the way. I’ve lived there before and I enjoy the character of the place, the restaurants, cafes and eccentric shops. The most under rated area in Glasgow? The East End. It offers a range of great properties, old and new, with plenty of space and character within easy reach of the city centre. It’s definitely a place to watch for the future. Tips for househunters? Make sure you know what reports and approvals you need to have before you start looking for your new home, like an agreement in principle etc. Speak to family and friends and use free mortgage advisers to help navigate the unknown such as the range of government assisted packages you may be entitled to. By doing this you will be able to move quickly when you find your perfect home.

WHAT’S HOT AT HOME FOR 2015 | 25

M

uch like the world of fashion, trying to keep up with what’s happening in the realms of home style can be a fickle business. There are looks that are fleeting (and we’re all rather relieved that they are), and others that arrive and stick around. Hidden amongst the rails of disposable home fashion are the ‘skinny jean’ and ‘camel coat’ of the world of interiors - the pieces that remain from one season to the next. The key is investing

wisely, in things you really love that will bring joy and fun to your home whatever the magazines are telling you to buy next. Whether your four walls are looking decidedly tired and in need of a full overhaul or you just fancy a freshen up, take a little inspiration from the best of 2015’s interior design trends for style that will stick around long after the summer is gone.

hile many of us dream of an escape from city life to a home in the country, Suzanne and Craig Gilmour turned that dream into a reality, but the location was almost a bridge too far. “When Craig and I first went to see this house I thought Killearn was just a bit too far away,” explains Suzanne, “but the moment we drove down the driveway and saw the house and the views, we were both smitten. “Now I really enjoy the drive back from the city. I can feel my shoulders relax and a certain calmness as soon as I enter the countryside.” The couple, who live with their two children, Gregor and Hannah, and their two dogs, Millie and Lola, and run a building surveying business, bought the house 12 years ago after outgrowing their previous home in Bearsden. “It was a lovely house and we had extended it twice but the garden area was quite small and we wanted a more traditional house.” The family started their new house hunt when the market was at its highest and, having lost out on a few other properties, were determined not to let this one slip away.

“Houses were going for sometimes over 50 per cent of the asking price,” says Craig, “so I put our best offer in for this one. If we didn’t get it we knew we had put our best foot forward and could have no regrets.” The house was in a good condition, inside and out, but in desperate need of new bathrooms and a kitchen, and redecoration. It also had a number of smaller rooms upstairs, which had previously been staff quarters, so the couple knocked some of these rooms together to create bigger bedrooms with en suite facilities. The stunning kitchen, as it

is now, used to be three rooms (kitchen, pantry and butler’s kitchen) and the current utility room was the old coal bunker. “We have made a lot of changes over the years,” says Suzanne. “And we recently built a three car garage with accommodation above which my son has for his drums, which has almost removed all noise from the house.” The rooms, which are meticulous in their design and decoration, are all down to Suzanne. “I once had an interior designer come to the house but I didn’t engage their services as I wasn’t inspired. I love interior design and

draw my inspiration from my travels to different hotels and restaurants, and will happily scour the internet for ideas.” When it comes to major building work Craig steps in and Suzanne admits it’s handy having a husband with so much knowledge of the building industry, with the one drawback being she’s always last on Craig’s list to get anything done. “Thankfully we have a really good architect that we work closely with,” says Suzanne. “And I’m just about to rip out my cloakroom and modernise it, so have engaged the help of a bathroom designer.” The aesthetic of the house is clearly important to the Gilmours but not at the cost of function and practicality, with the couple choosing to use wood and marble flooring throughout downstairs, both being easy on the eye and to clean when the dogs return home from their daily run in the gardens. “Our most worthwhile investment is probably the Aga in the kitchen,” says Suzanne. “I love cooking and baking but I also love just heating myself up on a cold day.

“I also love the curtains in the house which are all lined and interlined to help with heat loss as the house is single glazed.” While the six bedroom house would be a dream home for many, it’s still a work in progress for the family, as Suzanne confirms. “I love my home but we are just about to decorate again. I’m considering painting the hallway panelling in grey but I’m just not sure if I’m brave enough. “We are also currently making a gym in our old garage and adding an orangery onto the kitchen which will give us a bigger kitchen/dining/living space. There’s definitely never a dull moment in this household.”

TRIED & TESTED

SensatioNail Gel Polish Starter Kit words ∙ Iona Shawcross

TOTAL LIGHTWEIGHT

A

t almost £70, this at-home gel polish kit is a bit of an investment but with my regular gel manicure costing £25, I figured even if I got three manicures, let alone the 10 applications suggested on the box, I’d be quids in. Along with the essential LED lamp, the kit included orange stick, buffer, lint-free wipes, gel cleanser, primer, base and top coat and gel polish. The instructions were very clear but I also watched a couple of YouTube videos to familiarise myself with the process. It was exactly like my last salon experience but took a bit longer as I had to wait between each ‘curing’ before working on the other hand. It’s a 30 second cure for base and top coat and a one minute for each colour coat. Are my home efforts as good as a salon? Not really but six days on they are still chip free and super shiny – although they did glow white in a couple of clubs with UV/black light. The kit is great for convenience and everyday nails but I’d still definitely book a professional gel polish for a special occasion. www.sensationail.co.uk

If you like a full colour pay-off but with a lightweight feel, Revlon’s new Ultra HD™ Lipstick is definitely worth trying. Just one coat delivers true colour clarity with a weightless feel and a smoother, more even application than traditional wax-based lipsticks. £7.99 at Boots and Superdrug citywide.

JUST PEACHY Get fruity this spring by including peach in your new season look. It looks great with a light tan and doesn’t drain the complexion like some pinks. If you fancy biting into the peach trend, Clarins Instant Light Lip Perfector in coral, £18, is a great place to start. Available at Clarins’ counters citywide.

SUNNY DISPOSITION We always look forward to the latest incarnation of Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess collection. Prices from £14.50. Bronze Goddess Shimmering Nudes collection at Estée Lauder counters citywide from June 2015.

BLONDE MOMENT Good news if you’ve been inspired by the likes of Khloe Kardashian into going lighter and brighter this spring as Sexy Hair has launched its first colour maintenance system, and it's all about blondes. Shampoos and conditioner £11.95 each, shine spray £13.95 at www.sexyhair.co.uk.

DINNER @ WUDON words · Victoria Martin · photos · Susie Lowe

T

he problem with three women working together is that, invariably, at least two of us are dieting or adopting a healthier lifestyle at any given time. One particularly hungry Thursday our thoughts turned to all the foods we’ve been depriving ourselves of and two thirds of the office came to the decision that, after our not so exhilarating lunchtime salad, we deserved some real food. Japanese food is a good compromise between naughty and healthy and we promptly hot footed it to Wudon, our favourite Japanese noodle and sushi restaurant in town. Upon arrival at the stylish and contemporary venue on Great Western Rd, we kicked off proceedings with some edamame beans, £3 and giant prawn crackers, £2.50 to silence the hunger pangs, washed down with a couple of Diet Cokes. We were, afterall, throwing caution to the wind, not throwing in the towel.

At Wudon, they suggest two to three small plates and a side dish per person. Small plates are perfect for getting a little bit of everything you fancy and this type of noncommittal cuisine always encourages me to try something I wouldn’t normally go for. We started with War Teeps dumplings, £4.50 packed with pork, prawn and shitake mushroom and full of flavour, and some delicious pak choi, £4. We also went for Saw Choi vegetable tempura, £4.50, which was light, crispy and cooked to perfection. Sushi was also an absolute must so we opted for the Tori Katsu, £3.70, seaweed wrapped sushi filled with their famous katsu chicken, the Tobiko (orange fish roe), £3.30, and the succulent Teriyaki Beef, £3.30. All demolished in super quick time. After a little break the sweet menu was sheepishly requested. I opted for the Apple Tempura, £4.50, with

vanilla ice cream whilst T went for the Toffee Pear, £5, served with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. Feeling a little guilty, we were sure to leave absolutely no evidence that there had ever been anything inside the bowl should the diet police have been tipped off about our momentary lapse of discipline. As we were both driving, we sadly had to watch other diners drink cocktails but we’ve already got our eyes on the Lychee Blush and Manga (both £5.50) for our return visit without car. With our appetites well and truly satisfied, we toddled off home to prepare our sensible salads for the next day, safe in the knowledge that we hadn’t fallen off the bandwagon in spectacular fashion… but already looking forward to our next cheat day date. Slouch This multi-award winning Bath Street music venue and eatery serves food until 2am. Along with a great selection of hand crafted pizzas and burgers, we’d recommend Slouch’s excellent beef brisket chilli nachos and haggis and peppercorn sauce hot dog. Unbelievably messy but why stand on ceremony when eating with friends? Good for… a good value early to late night one stop spot with your besties. Expect to pay… £4.25 for mozzarella sticks, from £8.95 for burgers and from £7.95 for pizzas. Anything else? The weekly jazz, blues and acoustic nights are a breeding ground for local talent. 203-205 Bath St, G2 4HZ, Tel: 0141 221 5518.

Steak and Cherry

Steak and Cherry The i-on team gave an audible cheer when this late night favourite reopened last year after a three year leave of absence due to a fire. The restaurant is as good as ever and although the location has moved to across the road from the former site, the menu has retained old favourites like the legendary ‘tower’ burger and crowd-pleasing pancakes both of which can be enjoyed until 5am. Good for… loading up on carbs in preparation for the morning after a great night out. Expect to pay… £4.75 for nachos, £8.95 for a pepperoni pizza and £11.95 for the aforementioned burger. Anything else? The menu features healthier options like salads and calorie counted dishes should you be inclined. 508 Sauchiehall St, G2 3LG, Tel: 0141 352 9893.

don’t forget...

DID YOU KNOW? Spending more time in the kitchen could actually benefit your health? A recent study carried out by Betta Living found that we walk an average of 61 miles in the unlikely location every year – to put it in real terms that’s the same as walking from Paisley to Edinburgh.

Father’s Day is Sunday 21 June so be sure to dust off your best ‘Dad jokes’ for the occasion. Here are a few of our favourites: I wouldn’t buy anything Velcro. It’s a complete rip-off. What did the hat say to the hat rack? You stay here, I’ll go on ahead. Did you know you can’t play poker in the jungle? There are just too many cheetahs. I heard there was a new store called Moderation. They have everything there. How do you know when you are going to drown in milk? When it’s passed your eyes. Why do crabs never give to charity? Because they're shellfish. My cat was just sick on the carpet, I don't think it's feline well. Tea is for mugs. I gave all my dead batteries away today... Free of charge. When you have a bladder infection, urine trouble. What do you call an Argentinian with a rubber toe? Roberto.

RIPE FOR THE PICKING With the return of Wimbledon in June, thoughts turn to the tournament’s traditional delicacy, strawberries and cream. This year, instead of heading to your local supermarket for your strawberries, pick them straight from the farm at East Yonderton Farm, just beyond Glasgow Airport, for the freshest of strawberries to take home with you.
