Any doubt over Glasgow’s place as a leading contemporary arts centre was surely blown away last year when three of the four Turner Prize nominees were Glasgow School of Art graduates. With that in mind, and the fact the Turner Prize is coming to Scotland – to The Tramway, no less – for the first time in December, we paid a visit to contemporary arts hothouse SWG3 and found that as well as celebrating its 10th birthday, there’s a whole host of recent changes at this Yorkhill arts icon. Find out more on page 24. If you’re seeking sartorial rather than creative inspiration for your summer wardrobe, you’re sure to find something to suit in our Into the Blue fashion shoot on page 30 or in our fashion news pages starting on page 36. Our competition is a five-star overnight stay with culinary experience at Edinburgh’s luxurious Balmoral Hotel. Turn to page 06 if you’re feeling lucky. Someone who certainly did hit a lucky streak was Claudia Ennemoser, who won our last competition for £500 to spend at Thomas Sabo’s Buchanan Galleries store. Happy accessories shopping, Claudia. Until next time, enjoy i-on

TALKING ABOUT | 11
TALKING ABOUT Periscope
Periscope? As in pointy things that come out of submarines? No, as in the live video streaming app that tech heads claim will either change your life or potentially cause you to develop an unhealthy obsession with someone else’s. I’m confused. Explain. Periscope is a Twitter owned app that allows users to live stream to countless others in real time using their smartphone. Viewers can then comment and rate how much they enjoy the feed by giving users ‘hearts’. Is it like Vlogging? Similar although vloggers tend to record and then edit their work, while Periscopers - such as Bradley Laborman, who streams his daily life a la The Truman Show - are completely live and broadcasting in real life. So I can just pick up my phone and live stream anything? Technically, yes but legally, no. For example, it’s video piracy if you live stream a film or a television programme and
Periscope can suspend or ban users who do. Also, from a privacy and safety point, you need to be careful about live streaming someone without their permission or about giving away too much information about yourself. But it would be tricky to stop someone streaming, wouldn’t it? Periscope follows the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and has pledged to respect intellectual property rights which means they must act on any violations. At the recent PayPer-View boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, the company was notified of 66 Periscope streams and took action against 30 of them. What happened to the others? The other feeds ended before any action could be taken. So if I’m quick I might get away with it? That’s not really the spirit of the app so I’d stick to filming things you can stream legally.

he suspicion is that, had Glasgow synthpop trio Prides had nothing to show for their career but playing their song Messiah at the closing ceremony of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games in August of last year, they wouldn’t be looking back on their days in the band as a success. While many artists might choose to dine out on that story for life, there’s been a sense for some time now that Prides have been earmarked for bigger and better things. We’ll find out soon enough, for the trio – vocalist and keyboard player Stewart Brock, keyboard player and guitarist Callum ‘Cal’ Wiseman and drummer Lewis Gardiner – finally release their debut album The Way Back Up through Island Records this month, and early indications
are that it’s a breezy, anthemic collection of synth-pop tracks which places them most obviously alongside their fellow Scots Chvrches. There’ll be a baptism of fire of sorts on the day of release, when they become the first band to play a set on the stage at T in the Park’s new home, Strathallan Castle. The road which has led them to this fateful day has extended for a decade behind the group, with Brock and Gardiner having originally played together and been signed as a duo called Midnight Lion, and Wiseman previously playing guitar for folksy singer Kitty the Lion – it was the ‘lion’ theme, in fact, which gave them their new name. Originally from Stoke (Brock), near Glasgow (Gardiner) and
MUSIC | 17 Shetland (Wiseman), the trio all originally moved to the city to study at university, although Wiseman was apparently encouraged to quit his studies by the rest of the group so he could join them in the band full-time. They began demoing songs in earnest for the Prides project two years ago, which isn’t too far from their recorded method, in fact, seeing as everything they do is put down by producer Gardiner in his own home studio in his kitchen. This is a fact which is at odds with the music that’s actually to hand; tracks like Out of the Blue, Messiah and Higher Love are irresistible, ‘80s-referencing electro-pop anthems which will most conjure in the public consciousness big festival stages rather than small Glasgow kitchenettes. Already they’ve had advance singles previewed by Radio 1 and been invited down to London to support their teenage heroes Blink-182. While the millions they played to internationally during the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony is an audience that’s unlikely to be equalled any time soon, the big stage they’ll take to this month should give us an idea how suited they are to such arenas in their own right. Prides play T in the Park, Strathallan Castle, on Friday 10 July. Their album The Way Back Up is released the same day. pridesband.com, www.tinthepark.com.

The perfect summer playground. Kids of all ages welcome. Think falconry lessons for all the family, splashing around in one of The Club’s pools and junior tennis camps for the young ones. Or imagine an indulgent day at the spa, with a stroll in the countryside and dinner in one of our four restaurants for the grown-ups. With all this and country pursuits too, a family break at Gleneagles can be as jam-packed or relaxing as you’d like it. The hardest part will be choosing what to do first.
What gives Glasgow its spark? Glaswegians. If you sit around the city long enough, you’ll see someone to make you laugh, or to make you think. It has a huge heart. What’s the city’s must see attraction? For me, it’s Kelvingrove Park and around the Glasgow University area. I walked the length and breadth of it in the sunshine last week and it was the best tonic of the month. If there’s one thing you could change about the city, what would it be? I’d make the theatres and cinemas as cheap as possible so they would be more accessible. Dreams are born watching movies and theatre. Where would you take visitors to show them the ‘real’ Glasgow? Finnieston to sample some of the bars and restaurants but to the housing schemes, from Possilpark to Easterhouse and Shettleston, because Glasgow’s heartbeat is in places like that. These areas have had social problems, but good families live there and want the best for their children... just like anywhere else.

BUSINESS
George Glover photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Fergus & Glover is an award-winning dental practice with a core ethos of high quality dentistry including aesthetic and dental implant work. Here founding partner, George Glover, gives us an insight into the company which celebrates 20 years in business this year. How many people work within the business? We have a team of 18 people working across our Glasgow and Aberdeen clinics. What is your background? Growing up in Glasgow, I always knew I wanted to be involved in dentistry and studied at Glasgow University. I’ve since gone on to do a MSc in Implant Dentistry and I’m currently working towards a second MSc. What changes have you seen in dentistry in recent years? Technology, materials and techniques are constantly evolving. There is a much higher focus on more conservative ‘tooth kind’ dentistry. Have clients’ expectations changed over the years? Celebrity dentistry has shaped the importance people are placing on their smile, but clients tend to seek a more gentle, natural looking result. What sets your business apart from your competitors? We’re constantly learning and improving. We won’t settle for second best.

STYLE Dev Garcha photo ∙ Susie Lowe
If you struggle to tell the difference between a notch or peak lapel, Dev Garcha is the man to enlighten you. As area manager for tailoring specialist Chester Barrie, he’s your guy for men looking to smarten up their act. I’d describe my style as… classic with a twist. The person whose style I most admire is… Idris Elba. Casual or formal, he looks immaculate. My favourite recent find was… a Roadmaster jacket from Belstaff. A future classic. The trend I’m definitely not buying into is… small lapels and short suit jackets. My favourite style quote is… Oscar Wilde’s “You can either be a work of art or you wear one.” If money were no object I’d buy… a Patek Phillppe watch. My big fashion no-no is… wearing black with navy. My fashion tip for 2015 is… extreme cutaway collars for shirts.

FOOD
Jimmy Lee photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Jimmy Lee is head chef of Lychee Oriental. Jimmy gains inspiration for his cooking from both his native Scotland and his Chinese heritage, with his father teaching him to cook. A skill he’s now sharing on BBC2’s Great British Menu. What’s the signature dish at the restaurant? Our intensely flavoured braised belly pork with aubergines and chilli bean. It really is an exceptional dish. Off duty, which restaurant in the city would you choose to go to for dinner? The Sisters Restaurant is an amazing family-run business serving fantastic Scottish cuisine. What’s your ultimate comfort food? You can’t beat a traditional chicken curry with egg fried rice. What’s the most stressful dinner you’ve ever cooked? Cooking for my mum. She’s so fussy but in a good way. If you weren’t in the restaurant business, what would you be doing? I would probably be a Scottish tour guide so I could show Chinese tourists how great Scotland is.

hen the Studio Warehouse, or SWG3 as it’s known, first opened its doors a decade ago, it’s fair few really knew what to make of it. The building, formerly a Custom & Excise tobacco bond, definitely had a great ‘feel’ to it but it was also so huge in stature it was difficult to see how it would function as a successful arts venue. Thankfully Andrew Fleming Brown - AKA Mutley – had not only the vision to see past the enormity of the challenge but also the dogged determination to reinvent the building. “I got involved in the space in 2004 after putting on an event with George Matheson (SWG3’s co-founder) and on returning the following day to clear up the mess, I went up to the 2nd floor for the first time. The potential was so exciting that I tracked down the building’s owner and, within a couple of days, agreed a rental on the upper floors, without any plans, funding or experience.” Despite being derelict since the 1980s, the turnaround was swift and the first group of artists moved into the ‘studios’ in February 2005; three 8ft high walls with plastic sheeting for glazing, a single light bulb and several buckets to catch the drips from a dodgy ceiling. “Things were so basic back then that the first hour of the day was spent emptying the buckets down the single toilet, which was on a raised platform in a ramshackle space at the front of the 2nd floor,” remembers Mutley. Buzzing from a recent New York trip, where he was inspired by PS1, DIA, White Columns and the emerging

multi-arts venues across the city, Mutley and collaborators set about recreating the same environment at SWG3. “Glasgow has a very connected and supportive arts community which played a huge role in our early years’ development. From doing skip parties (which are exactly what they sound), fundraising dinners and art auctions to raise development funding, they were incredibly generous and continue to be so.” Fast forward 10 years and the change has been nothing short of incredible. Today visitors will find a mixture of studio facilities and gallery space, all which operate during business hours, along with two venue spaces which open at the weekend or occasionally for midweek gigs.
There’s also a large daylight photography studio, 25 artists’ studios and an open plan design studio and case room which supports up to 16 independent digital practitioners. The Warehouse Element of the SWG3 moniker is found on the 1st floor with this area designed as a music venue. Hosting club nights and gigs from everyone from Haim, Annie Lennox, Madlib, Future Islands and Hudson Mohawk, it’s also been used for high profile fashion shows from the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Scotland Re:Designed and is the core business of the project. “As a destination venue we focus on standalone events but we are starting our first semi-regular club night at the end of August which is ‘A Love From Outer Space’ with DJs

Venture downstairs and you’re likely to hear the constant burr of sewing machines from Trakke. It’s from SWG3 that the cult outdoor lifestyle brand hand makes all its bags, backpacks and accessories. Made in Glasgow by grafters should be their tag line. The Poetry Club, which is also a functioning artwork by Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie, is the other performance space. Since opening in 2012, with an intimate reading from punk legend Richard Hell, the club, which has an underground speakeasy feel to it, has welcomed icons such as Patti Smith, John Giorno and acts as a platform for emerging spoken word and performance artists. So what’s next for this ever evolving creative hothouse? “We are going to develop the ground floor into a large

exhibition and events space, with more than double the capacity of the Warehouse. Operational from October, it’ll be called the TV Studio as it will co-exist as a production facility for the TV and Film industry,” reveals Mutley. “Next year the plan is to finally get the rooftop open to the public as a four month pop-up events space and by 2017 have a fully licensed rooftop bar and restaurant over-looking the Clyde.” Safe to say things are definitely looking up as SWG3 looks towards to the next 10 years. A
fter a week of over indulgence, I was feeling sluggish and sick of the sight of food. After weighing up the pros and cons of jaw wiring, I decided the three day cold pressed juice cleanse from Juice Garden was a less drastic option. I ordered my juices online the day before I wanted to start and picked them up fresh from the West End branch. Six juices per day for three days. Simple. The colourful, vitamin packed juices were numbered in the order in which to take them and there was a helpful leaflet explaining how to get the best results. Day one was tough and I did struggle a little with the Earthy Greens and the Unbeetable juices but the other four were enjoyable. Days two and three felt much easier and I was impressed with the results, feeling much less bloated and an amazing 5lbs lighter - the result I was hoping for. The £95 price tag initially seemed high but take into account the purchasing and preparation of ingredients and it’s actually a pretty reasonable price to pay for the convenience and that impressive drop on the scales. amily has very much been at the heart of the home of Marion and Gordon White. But with two of their three chicks having flown the nest, the couple are now giving serious thought to downsizing. “Since our two eldest children, Malcolm and Caitlin, bought their own properties, it’s just been the two of us and our youngest son, Ben, and Buzz, our two-year-old black Labrador, living here. More than half the rooms are hardly used,” explains Marion. The seven bedroom house lies within an exclusive development of only six properties in Newton Mearns and the couple, who run fatBuzz, a full service digital and marketing agency, believe it was a mix of fate and coincidence that helped them secure it. “I saw an advert for the show house so I drove down to have a look,” explains Marion. “Just by chance we went on holiday the next day and staying at the same hotel was the development’s architect, Sandy Cooper and his family.

“He and Gordon went to play golf and his wife and I went for lunch. By the end of the lunch I was convinced this was definitely where I wanted to live. Luckily, Sandy had done as good a job at convincing Gordon.” Being able to help design the house with Sandy was a major factor in the purchase and, with only six properties being built, the development was crafted in such a way that no public rooms are overlooked by other houses - not that nosey neighbours have ever been an issue. “All the neighbours are friendly with each other,” says Marion. “I’d struggle to live anywhere if that wasn’t the case.” When designing their home the couple were inspired by the airy, spacious open plan look of homes they had visited while on business in America. “The downstairs was designed with that US aesthetic in mind, with high ceilings and large rooms, which are great for having friends and family over,” says Marion.“Although it doesn’t seem to matter how many rooms we have, everyone always ends up around the table in the kitchen.” The Whites used to work from home, so the initial house featured a home office and then when their company started
50 | PROPERTY AND INTERIORS
to expand they turned the garage into a second office, adding a new garage and a gym to property at the same time. As their business grew and moved into new premises in Kinning Park, Marion called on the services of interior designers from John Dick & Sons to convert one of the offices into a reading room, which Marion sees as her personal haven. “I love going in there to get away from the television,” she confesses. Other changes have included making the third floor, which is accessed from the master bedroom suite, into a dressing room. “That’s been the most worthwhile investment I think. Although Gordon would probably argue that the snooker room has been more worthwhile.”
Entertaining friends and family are undoubtedly important to the Whites and Marion has worked hard at recreating the kind of home she grew up in. “Growing up our house was always full of friends of mine or those of my two brothers and sister. It was a really happy home, where all were welcome and I feel we’ve accomplished that here. “This home is full of happy memories but it’s probably now time to pass the house on to a new family to make special memories of their own,” says Marion. “Just make sure there are plenty tissues handy when I hand over the keys though.”

WEEKENDERS Made in Chelsea words ∙ Tracey McCallum
T
he only good thing to come from being forced to watch an episode of Made in Chelsea was that it made me realise it was 10 years since I’d last been in London and it was definitely time to go back. I used to visit the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea for work and I loved the area but there was never time to explore. So, I decided to make a weekend of it in this exclusive enclave and to take advantage of all on offer in the area, all within walking distance of the hotel and without having to go near a tube station. The four and a half hour journey on the Virgin Express from Glasgow to Euston was a breeze and shelling out for
first class tickets was a worthwhile indulgence. We arrived relaxed and ready for a weekend that would give the MIC cast a run for their money. Continuing the ‘first class’ theme, we checked into the five star Royal Garden Hotel in the heart of Kensington. It’s perfectly situated on Kensington High Street and the corner of Kensington Gardens and our room, a stone’s throw from the Palace, offered fabulous views over the gardens. The hotel has an authentic Chinese restaurant on the 10th floor that boasts breathtaking views of the city skyline so it was only right to check it out. As we hadn’t thought

to book ahead, we weren’t able to get a table in the main restaurant, Min Jiang, which seems to be the place to be of a Friday night but we were happy to sit in the bar, enjoy the views and sample some oriental themed cocktails along with a delightful Dim Sum platter. We had planned to move on after a drink and a bite to eat but ended up working our way through the cocktail list instead. The Canton Gingers proved to be my downfall, delicious but deadly. The following morning after filling up on the hearty hotel buffet breakfast, we took our fuzzy heads off for some fresh air and a walking tour of Chelsea. This whole area oozes exclusivity and feels much less frantic than the rest of the city. After a top up coffee and some people watching on the King’s Road (so called as it was the King’s private road until 1830), we spent the rest of the morning taking in the exhibits at the Victoria and Albert Museum. You could easily spend the whole day there but we’d booked tickets for the Fashion Rules exhibition at Kensington Palace and didn’t want to

miss the chance to marvel at dresses worn by The Queen, Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales. After a day of culture we donned our glad rags and ventured out to dinner at a smart French bistro before dancing the night away amongst the resident flamingos at Kensington Roof Gardens. The gardens are well worth seeking out – don’t let the very ordinary looking entry door on a side street fool you – as they are a true hidden gem on the roof of what was once a department store, and previous home to Barbara Hulanicki’s legendary Biba. And yes, there really are flamingos there to admire, along with ducks, over 100 trees and a pond. Truly magical and a must visit. DINNER @ GUSTO words · Victoria Martin · photos · Susie Lowe
I
f there’s anything in a name, Bothwell Street’s most recent addition, Gusto, has a lot to live up to. No pressure. The restaurant certainly looks the business, all brass fixtures and decadent but discreet mood lighting. Think Kelly Hoppen does The Great Gatsby. The central bar is well sized and dining tables are far enough away to allow drinkers the space to enjoy their drinks without worrying their derriere will land in someone’s dessert. There are a number of table options, including an outside area, and we were lucky enough to secure one of the generous semi-circular booths. I’d definitely recommend requesting a booth if available on booking. Our apron clad waitress was professional yet approachable and suggested some olives while we surveyed the wine menu, which featured a good selection of quality wines with bottles from £16.50 and glasses from £4.50. We chose the velvet smooth Feudi D’Albe Montepulciano, £19.95.
The menu is Italian in theme and has everything you could wish for with a great selection of pasta, pizza and fresh fish options along with a grill section if you like your dishes a little more meaty. There’s also a Healthy Living Menu available for those looking to keep their diet and healthy eating plan in check. Sticking with the à la carte, I struggled to decide between the starters; the sound of the warm asparagus with a creamed truffle dressing particularly tempting but finally decided on the deep fried salt cod ravioli, £5.95. My date opted for the hummus board, £5.25. Unsurprisingly, the ravioli won the starter war. For the main event, it was the fillet steak for me, £20.95, served perfectly rare with a red wine sauce, £1.95, along with green beans, £3.25, and steamed spinach with sea salt, £3.75. Dressed in garlic butter, it was so tender I could cut it with my fork alone. My fellow diner went for the rigatoni

primavera with chicken, £10.75, which was hearty in portion size and, if the cleared plate was any indication, equally as pleasing as the fillet. After a lengthy break polishing off our wine, we found room for dessert choosing the baked flaming Alaska, £7.50, and the warm chocolate and hazelnut brownie with pistachio ice cream, £5.95. This provided a gorgeously gooey, intense chocolate hit and the Alaska was lit at the table thus living up to its name. A bit like the restaurant it was dutifully devoured in – and with genuine gusto by me. Gusto, 16 Bothwell St, G2 6NU, Tel: 0141 227 6270, www.gustorestaurants.uk.com
