OK, so the big question on my lips at the moment is, what happened to summer? It got off to a great start at the Games (which were a fantastic endorsement of Glasgow and Glaswegians) and then along comes Bertha and it was bye, bye sunshine. The only consolation I’m taking from this move into autumn is the cooler weather requires a new wardrobe and we look at some of the new season’s trends on page 26. We’ve also got a marvellously moody male fashion story on page 34 and this month’s competition also has a fashion theme of the male persuasion with Savile Row tailor Chester Barrie offering one i-on reader the chance to win a made-tomeasure suit worth £795. Find out how to enter on page 6. If you’re more interested in home style than street style, you’ll love our look inside the stunning West End home of design guru Margot Paton on page 48. And for anyone pining for a sip of sangria or a plate of serrano and Manchego following a recent holiday, we’ve got three of the city’s best Spanish-style restaurants for tucking into tapas on page 62. Until next time, enjoy i-on

his month’s competition is strictly for the boys but it’s sure to be applauded by females who appreciate a smart dressed man. MY I-ON GLASGOW

Claire Wilkinson photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As marketing manager of Glasgow’s prestigious Princes Square shopping centre every day is different for Claire Wilkinson between dealing with Princes Square tenants, liaising with the centre’s creative, PR and digital agencies and working on Princes Square’s popular pop up shops and events programme, the only thing typical about Claire’s day is that it’s guaranteed to be busy. Are you a Glaswegian? I’ve lived in Balloch or thereabouts my whole life and have worked in the city centre for the last 15 years – I just love it. Your earliest memory of Glasgow? Visiting the Kelvingrove art gallery on a double decker bus with my grandpa, and a school trip to the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. The city’s best kept secret? The view from the roofs of some of the city’s buildings for a completely different perspective. The viewing platform at The Lighthouse is a good example. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Loch Lomond if it’s for some quiet time, Gleneagles for a special get together or Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens for a really special treat, ideally overnight.

Around the city - Where you’ll find me: Dining out: The Sisters at Kelvingrove Enjoying a coffee: Carluccio’s Lunch with friends: Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens Having my haircut: Neeson Sixty For a pamper session: Cream Beauty

FOOD

Andrew Mitchell photo ∙ Susie Lowe

The West End’s Ubiquitous Chip is undoubtedly a gem of a restaurant so it’s a bit of a happy coincidence that head chef Andrew Mitchell originally planned a career in geology rather than gastronomy. Having swapped rocks for pots 15 years ago, the acclaimed chef says it’s hard to imagine doing anything else other than cooking. What’s the signature dish at the restaurant? The Venison haggis, circa 1971, is still a favourite with Chip customers. What impresses you most about the restaurant? The ‘courtyard’ is a stunning place to sit and eat. The sun beams through the huge ceiling windows during the day, and there’s a lovely atmosphere for night time dining. Off duty, which restaurant in the city would you choose to go to for dinner? Finnieston has a great selection of bars, cafes and restaurants that have developed over the last few years… it’s hard to pick a favourite though. What’s your ultimate comfort food? I’m quite partial to a late night Chinese. Which chef do you most admire? Anybody in the industry who balances long hours with raising a family, very impressive. The strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? I recently had a jellyfish salad at the Hanoi Bike Shop which was utterly delicious.

STYLE

Neil Smith

photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As the owner of Orro in the Merchant City, one of the UK’s leading contemporary jewellery galleries, Neil Smith is the go to man for striking modern pieces that exude discreet luxury and discerning taste - a bit like the man himself. I’d describe my style as… A cross between classic and hipster, you could call it Clipster. My favourite place to shop in Glasgow is… Aspecto for the great range of designer brands. The person whose style I most admire is… Sean Connery, still the yardstick by which all other Bonds are measured. My favourite designer is… Paul Smith because of his idiosyncratic take on traditional styling, his ‘classics with a twist’. When it comes to fashion I’m a bit of a… perfectionist. My favourite recent find was… the range of shorts from Orlebar Brown. I’ve got a thing about… Grenson brogues – they just shout handmade quality. My best fashion bargain ever was… a Dries Van Noten jacket I picked up at the annual sale at his warehouse in Antwerp around 15 years ago – it is a style that will never go out of fashion. My favourite style/fashion quote is… “fashions may go out of style but style never goes out of fashion.” If money were no object on the fashion front I’d buy… The new 18 carat gold LAMBDA watch from NOMOS which is sublime.

DESIGN

Alan Fulton photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Jewellery designer Alan Fulton recently marked a sparkling career when he was made a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths, one of the jewellery industry’s highest honours. Recognised in four categories; diamond mounter, diamond setter, designer and goldsmith, Alan is the only Fellow in Scotland in three of these categories. How long have you been involved in jewellery design? I have been involved for 39 years. My interest in jewellery started, in some way, by accident with a Sixth Year Studies art project at school. Tell us about your design style. I don’t really have a design style. It’s the attention to the finest of details; by designing to suit the anatomical form of the client, and using knowledge gained from vast experience as to how light reflects and refracts from the metals and stones to give the best effects. Where do you draw your inspiration from? My inspiration comes from the client and their likes and dislikes. I am, after all, creating for the client’s pleasure, not mine. Whose design style do you admire? Faberge, for quality and ingenuity.

MILITARY

New Look

Military launches yet another assault on the high street and this season we say surrender as the trend takes on a ladylike approach in softer and more feminine fabrics. Add some edge to your uniform with utilitarian details such as buttons, belts and oversized pockets. Opt for flattering shades of olive, navy, grey and camels to really nail that army girl style.

AW14 TRENDS | 31

MASCULINE

Girly girls need not apply for this overtly androgynous trend. Others can join the boy band by opting for tight tailoring, worn with brogues and Crombie inspired coats. For a more casual change, team oversized knits with baggy trousers a la Katharine Hepburn or go subtly sexy like model of the moment Cara Delevingne as seen here.

ndoubtedly, the most successful homes are the ones that reflect the owner’s personal style. And in Margot Paton’s case, the interior designer’s home is every bit as cool, elegant and chic as the lady herself. So it’s a surprise to learn that the design director at Chelsea Mclaine Interior Design had to be persuaded to view the property in the first place. “My son Matt and colleague Catherine arranged the viewing appointment. I had made an offer on a traditional conversion with fabulous gardens but was unsuccessful and really didn’t think I wanted to live in an apartment. But within five minutes of walking into my now home, I had made an offer and it was accepted.” The apartment is in the much admired former telephone exchange building in the West End and was essentially a

blank canvas, which Margot and her partner David relished. “We made a lot of changes. We reconfigured the kitchen, dining and living spaces to be open plan make it a more social space,” explains Margot. “We made the bedrooms en suite to give overnight guests their own space. We also created a laundry room on the mezzanine floor directly above the kitchen, which is a huge bonus when living in an apartment.” The apartment is decorated in neutral shades of grey and taupe so there is a natural and easy flow through all of the spaces. The floor finishes are mainly walnut and limestone, which contrast but sit harmoniously alongside each other. Margot decided on carpets in the bedrooms rendering them a bit more opulent and the couple is currently thinking of adding some deeper, more moody tones to the public areas for a change of ambience. In her daily duties of managing the Bearsden and recently opened West End Chelsea Mclaine showrooms and advising

clients on their interior decisions, Margot works with a huge list of suppliers and knew who to work with and what style she liked for her own home. She also draws much of her inspiration from travelling but her ideas are far grander in scale and ambition than simply adding a few rugs from Marrakech or ceramics from Greece. “David and I recently returned from a trip to Japan and we’re currently in the process of extending the top floor accommodation to include a garden room inspired by our journey. The natural light at roof level is amazing in both summer and winter and we would like to benefit from this. We also plan to redesign the roof garden with ideas we collected from courtyard gardens in Kyoto.” And you thought carrying that six foot elephant home from Africa was impressive.

DINNER @ NY AMERICAN GRILL words ∙ Victoria Martin ∙ photos ∙ Susie Lowe

M

y mum recently underwent a small operation and, for being such a brave soldier, I treated her to dinner at NY American Grill, the new dining addition to Level 2 of Princes Square. After being shown to our booth, I ordered a bottle of zesty sauvignon blanc, £19.95, before the mother/daughter bonding which usually consists of her quizzing me on important life matters such as money (none), pension plans (none) and men (none) could commence. Luckily for me, this time she was suitably distracted by an extremely appetising menu for her to peruse. And, after much deliberation and little time for talking, mama Martin chose the jerk Caribbean chicken skewers, £6.75, and I

opted for the dynamite shrimp tempura, £7.50. The chicken, which had been marinated overnight in a fiery jerk coating, was tender with a ‘straight off the barbecue’ taste. My king prawns were plump and juicy with the dynamite dipping sauce living up to its fiery name. Burgers from the Josper Grill were the order of the day for us, with mum going for the Californian burger with avocado and a tasty honey mustard mayo, £12.50, and the federation burger served with pulled pork, smoked bacon and caramelised onions, £14.50, for me. Deciding we were at risk of dislocating our jaws by attempting to bite into the mountainous burger buns, we dissembled our meal into bitesize pieces. The gallant effort by us to finish the sumptuous

burgers and sides of fries and coleslaw was noted by our friendly waitress as she cleared our almost empty plates and tried to tempt us with a cheeky look at the dessert menu. After giving our stomachs a well deserved rest, we decided, like the troopers we are, to power through and attempt a third and final course. The key lime pie with coconut ice cream, £5.95, was our waitress’ recommendation which my mum took her up on and I opted for the Georgia deep dish apple pie, £5.95. The cinnamon apples used in the apple pie were super tasty and the creamy ice cream it was served with was the perfect accompaniment. My mum forgot to leave me any of the key lime pie to try so this would suggest that she thoroughly enjoyed it. With an impressive selection of steaks, chicken and fish dishes to sample, NY American Grill offers more than just delicious burgers so we have the perfect excuse to go back again. Better still, next time it’s mum’s turn to pay. NY American Grill, 2nd Floor, Princes Square, 48 Buchanan St, G1 3JX, Tel: 0141 221 7667.

TAKE THREE

If that Spanish holiday is now a distant memory but you’re still pining for paella here’s our pick of three of the city’s Iberian style restaurants. Buen provecho!

Tinto Tapas, photo by Susie Lowe

Tinto Tapas This small but perfectly formed Southside tapas bar is a big hit with locals and one mouthful of paella (six varieties starting at £16.95) and you’ll see why. Service is attentive but not pushy and staff are good at suggesting tapas combinations. Tables can be a bit on the tight side and on busy nights the noise levels can soar – so pretty much an authentic tapas bar experience. Good for… interesting specials so do ask your waiter. Expect to pay… £2.95 for patatas bravas, £4.50 for albondigas and £4.75 for gambas pil pil. Anything else? On Tuesdays tapas start at £2.50. 138 Battlefield Rd, G42 9JT, Tel: 0141 636 6838.

Café Anadulz

Café Anadulz Since opening in 2003, Café Anadulz in the West End has been serving up consistently good food to hordes of hungry Glaswegians. Less rustic than some of the city’s other tapas bars, Anadulz is a good call for those looking for a polished Moorish experience. Good for… anyone looking for a wide variety of tapas – including gluten-free. Expect to pay… £4.95 for paella Valenciana, £4.95 for calamares and £4.75 for butifarra negra. Anything else? There’s a sister Café Anadulz just off George Square. 2 Cresswell Lane, G12 8AA, Tel: 0141 339 1111.

La Bodega Tapas Bar, photos by Susie Lowe

La Bodega Tapas Bar This Spanish-owned tapas bar is off the beaten track but well worth the detour west from town – especially if you’re a sucker for tortilla as it’s the best we’ve tasted outside Spain. The décor is rustic and furniture mismatched but that only adds to La Bodega’s overall authenticity. Good for… catch ups with friends or a casual date night. Expect to pay… £3.95 for the excellent tortilla, £4.20 for estofado and £2.80 for boquerones. Anything else? The bar hosts regular cabaret nights which sell out fast. 1120 South St, G14 0AP, Tel: 0141 581 3401.

Gleneagles hosts the biennial Ryder Cup tournament in September when the golfing glitterati heads to the home of golf. If you don’t know a birdie from a bogey, here are three facts about the tournament to casually drop into conversation. 1. The Ryder Cup was invented by an English merchant, Samuel Ryder, with the first tournament played in 1927. 2. The cup itself is 17” high and weighs 4 lbs. The golfer depicted on the trophy is Abe Mitchell who taught Ryder to play. 3. The competition was played originally between Great Britain and the USA. The format changed in 1979 to allow European players to join the UK and compete against the US.

WHO SAID THAT?

Three o’clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do.

DID YOU KNOW...? Jean-Paul Sartre, philosopher and writer.

...the patron saint of chefs died with a joke? St Lawrence was commanded by the prefect of Rome to turn over the riches of the church to the city. When Lawrence refused and quickly spread the wealth of the church out to the poorest in the city, the angry prefect had him tied to a grate over fire. Legend has it that after the martyr had suffered for a long time, he cheerfully said, ‘turn me over, I’m well done,’ and he has been the patron of chefs and cooks ever since.
