2014 has been a crazy, frantic but, on the whole, fun year here at i-on Towers which has seen the team celebrate an engagement, a wedding, a pregnancy and even the birth of our latest ‘baby’, i-on Aberdeen. With the potential for 2015 to be just as manic, my first New Year Resolution is to book a break and indulge in some serious ‘me time’. While I was tempted to give Val d’Isere a try after reading Nicky Howden’s great report on p56, I’m now being pulled in the direction of Venice, one of the destinations recommended in our honeymoon special on p38. That feature forms part of our annual New Year look at weddings and is joined by the stories of three couples just starting on their own very personal new beginnings on p28. For those with getting fit rather than getting married on their mind, our competition is a must enter as we have a cult Electra bicycle courtesy of Alpine Bikes up for grabs. These cruiser bikes really look the business and our lucky winner will be able to choose one up the value of £600. Congratulations go to Christine Henderson, the recipient of our last competition prize of those his and her designer watches from Kennett. That’s Christine’s 2015 off to a stylish start. Until next time, enjoy i-on

Avengers: Age of Ultron

FILM2015

Michael Clancy gives you a heads up on the must-see films coming soon to a cinema near you…

Avengers: Age of Ultron UK release date 24 April The biggest challenge facing Avengers: Age of Ultron is how it ups the ante from the massively successful first outing in 2012. It is always going to be a problem when you assemble a crew of Earth’s mightiest heroes in one film to find a villain who can pose a significant threat to match the dream team of Iron Man, Hulk, and the rest. Director, Joss Whedon, has found such a threat in the form of Ultron, a super intelligent creation of Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, gone awry. In a genius piece of casting, James Spader has been drafted in to provide a motion capture performance, as well as lend his silky, sinister voice, to bring him to life. A sneak preview of the film caused quite the stir among the guests of this year’s San Diego Comic Con, showing glimpses of the dark new direction the series is going in. When the first full trailer landed online there was certainly enough to reinforce that we are in for something special, with Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson joining

the team as magic brother-sister duo Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Combine that with over the top action, and a thoroughly creepy antagonist and Joss Whedon’s superhero smackdown should deliver again. Jurassic World UK release date 12 June It’s been over 20 years since the killer T-Rex made ripples in a cup of water and Steven Spielberg’s dino-disaster flick wreaked havoc in the multiplexes, and while the law of diminishing returns suggests not to get your hopes up for the fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park series, there are plenty of reasons to be cautiously optimistic. For a start Spielberg is on board, albeit as executive producer; a title that doesn’t guarantee success, but it’s a start. It also boasts an impressive cast, featuring the ever so hot right now Chris Pratt in leading man duties, and a strong support from Bryce Dallas Howard, New Girl’s Jake Johnson, Omar Sy and Irrfan Khan.

FILM 2015 | 11 go wrong at a park that is open for business. If Trevorrow can get all the elements right, he could delight and terrify a new generation of cinemagoers just as Spielberg did two decades ago.

Inside Out

This of course wouldn’t matter one jot if it fails to deliver on nail-biting, action sequences and impressive dinosaur scares. Director Colin Trevorrow seems intent on staying faithful to what made Jurassic Park a success in the first place, confirming that the CGI special effects will be accompanied with animatronic dinosaurs, as it was in the previous films. The story also gets back to basics. Set 22 years after the first film, it focuses on the horrors that can occur when things

Inside Out UK release date 24 July It may be a sacrilege to even suggest it; but by their own lofty standards, Pixar have been in a slump since the magnificent Toy Story 3 in 2010 (Brave was decent, but Cars 2 was decidedly poor). Inside Out should mark a return to the exceptional. Written and directed by Pixar royalty Pete Doctor, the film follows the trials and tribulations of Riley, a young girl going through a lot of upheaval, as told from the perspective of her emotions; Joy, Disgust, Fear, Sadness and Anger, who live in her head. It’s a charming concept, and with the studio relying more and more on sequels to established franchises, its originality is refreshing. Featuring a highly talented voice cast of top American comedians, including Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader, it is certain to bring in the laughs, but with real heart at the centre of it- Doctor’s last film was the poignantly moving Up after all. Expect then an emotional roller coaster as the oddball characters inside Riley’s head strive to help her make sense of a scary world.

12 | FEATURES Silence UK release date November How do you follow up a loud and obnoxious super hit like The Wolf of Wall Street? Adapting a piece of historical fiction about Jesuit priests in 17th century Japan doesn’t seem like the obvious answer. But then, Martin Scorsese has never been a director who does the obvious thing. Based on the 1966 novel by Shusaku Endo, it has become a passion project for Scorsese, who has had his eye on it since 1989. The plot focuses on Andrew Garfield’s Father Rodrigues, a Portuguese priest who travels to Japan in search of his mentor, Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson), who is

Silence

Star Wars: Episode VII

rumoured to have denounced his faith. The source material features much brutality and suffering, as Rodrigues is faced with the concept of martyrdom, which should make for uncomfortable viewing. The director has a fascination with religion, having tackled the subject matter in previous works, The Last Temptation of Christ and Kundun. And while a film that focuses on the roots of religious faith may seem like a tough sell, after the three hour headache that was The Wolf of Wall Street, a little Silence sounds pretty good. Star Wars: Episode VII UK release date 18 December Dust off those Lightsabers, practice your Yoda impressions, and use the Jedi Mind Trick to forget that The Phantom Menace ever happened, because the long awaited third Stars Wars trilogy hits cinemas in time for Christmas 2015. A long, long time ago, in a Galaxy not so far away, George

Lucas was the king of adventure sci-fi thanks to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and their battles against the evil empire. Then the lacklustre prequels came along, creating a massive disturbance in the force. And just when it seemed we were all ready to move on with our lives, in 2012 Disney purchased Lucasfilms, effectively giving the series a rebirth, with a third trilogy of films set some time after the events of Return of the Jedi. Unsurprisingly, the details of the plot are being kept under lock and key, but the announcement that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will be reprising their iconic roles is clearly a step in the right direction. J.J. Abrams is in the director’s chair this time around, and as his work on the recent Star Trek films has proved, he is the master of revitalising classic sci-fi franchises. With a promising cast featuring Andy Serkis, Adam Driver, Max Von Sydow, Oscar Isaac and Lupita Nyong’o, the Force should be strong in this one.

MY I-ON GLASGOW

Jason Blane photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As general manager of the Infiniti Centre at Braehead, Jason Blane spends each working day surrounded by luxury, high performance cars. But it’s not motor racing that fuels Jason’s free time, as this super fit Dowanhill resident gets his kicks on two legs rather than four wheels. A keen runner, snowboarder and gym goer, Jason’s certainly a man on the move. What gives Glasgow its spark? The people and their character. The Glasgow banter is unrivalled. Your preferred area in Glasgow? The West End. I have just moved there but my girlfriend introduced me to it a while back and I loved it. It has such a great atmosphere.

Award-Winning Chinese Restaurant

Your earliest memory of Glasgow? That has to be as a skateboarder, as I used to come into Glasgow from East Kilbride at the weekends and spend time in Virgin on Union Street or Clan Skates in Partick, which is still there and still owned by the same guy. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? It would be a run I think, taking in a park probably Kelvingrove because it’s close to home. On days off during the winter you’ll find me snowboarding in Glencoe.

Euan McWhirter photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Euan McWhirter is a bespoke jewellery designer who returned to Glasgow from London in 2010 to set up his label. Since then his bold, colourful designs have been spotted on Kylie Minogue, Emma Thompson and Shirley Manson to name a few. My favourite place to shop in Glasgow is… Princes Square. It’s a luxury destination for stylish shoppers, with great restaurants and bars. And a quiet haven from busy Buchanan Street. The person whose style I most admire is… Courtney Love. She’s one of the few people who can carry off a ripped babydoll dress or Versace couture. My favourite recent find was… my orange tweed trainers by Jaggy Nettle. They brighten up my walk to work. If money were no object on the fashion front I’d buy… several pairs of acne jeans, the fit is good and they last. I go through so many pairs of jeans. My big fashion no-no is… skinny jeans that are too tight. More men tend to be guilty of this than women. My fashion tip for 2015 is… buy bespoke. It doesn’t necessarily mean expensive and you will own something completely unique that you just won’t find on the high street.

DESIGN

Gillian Kyle photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Gillian Kyle is a Glasgow-based textile designer and director of Gillian Kyle Ltd. Her work is a celebration of Scottish popular culture, with a focus on iconic Scottish brands such as Mothers Pride and Tunnock’s. What’s your favourite room in your home? Definitely our sitting room. It’s full of my husband’s beautiful paintings and ceramics and has a lovely wood burning stove and lots of original features, including the original Edwardian artnouveau fireplace. What makes a house a home? Comfort, a sense of calm and a lot of personality - in that order. How would you describe your ‘signature’ look for your home? Magpie chic - I fill my home with things that I love and things that have a story, not things that match. Biggest design faux pas people make? Buying wholesale into a trend or brand and leaving no room for their own personality or style to shine through. For a good housewarming present I’d buy… A pack of Tunnock’s Teacakes. With some of my own Tunnock’s kitchen textiles and mugs thrown in too, of course.

BEAUTY

Leanne Donovan photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Leanne Donovan is chief beauty therapist/ floor manager at Taylor Ferguson Hair and Beauty in Glasgow city centre. One of the city’s most experienced beauty professionals, her looks belie her years in the business, with the beauty expert citing exercise and exfoliation as her two beauty essentials. What’s your hero skincare product? Germaine de Capuccini’s The Cream GNG. I’ve worked with this range for years now and this product transforms the skin’s texture and is capable of reversing the signs of ageing – and who doesn’t want that? Favourite salon treatment? Our Crazy Angel tanning product that develops in an hour. It’s fast, effective, the results look fantastic and it gives you an instant feel-good factor. Best new treatment you’ve recently tried? The Germaine De Capuccini Vitamin C facial which produces an immediate, intense luminosity. There’s also a great home care range which complements the facial. Beauty top tip? HD brows – I’m known as the Queen of Brows and have trained over many years. I’m a great believer that strong, shaped and defined brows enhance your face and can take years off you too.

NENEH CHERRY words ∙ David Pollock

S

he’s been such a chameleonic musical presence in her time as to be entirely invisible for a number of years now, but anyone who remembers the dayglo streetsound explosion that was Buffalo Stance in 1988 should know that Neneh Cherry’s not an artist to underestimate. The new year will see her head out in support of last year’s Blank Project, her first album in 18 years and unexpectedly one of the finest records of 2014. Born in Stockholm, precisely 50 years ago as Neneh Mariann Karlsson, Cherry was raised in Sweden and in the later years of her youth in New York, where her mother Monica married the jazz musician Don Cherry. Upping sticks and moving to London in her mid-teens, she became involved in the latter days of the city’s punk scene, playing

with groups like The Slits and Rip, Rig + Panic - it was with this group she met her close friend Andrea Oliver (mother of the television presenter Miquita), with whom she presented BBC2s cookery show Neneh and Andi Dish It Up in 2007. Despite this underground activity, her first flush of success came with the distinctly different sound of Raw Like Sushi, the album which followed a few months after Buffalo Stance and which took its style from hip-hop era New York street jams and a helping of contemporary soul. The record was co-written and recorded with Cameron McVey aka Booga Bear, who Cherry went on to marry, with input from Buffalo Stance’s remixer Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass and future Massive Attack members Robert Del Naja and Andrew Vowles.

MUSIC | 27 Her early promise wouldn’t find itself delivered on, however, with 1992's Homebrew and 1996's Man finding only modest success, although the latter did feature the Youssou N’Dour collaboration 7 Seconds. After her third record Cherry stepped back from music to be a full-time mother, dabbling in television and occasionally returning briefly to the studio, for example with her half-brother EagleEye Cherry on Long Way Around in 2000 or Gorillaz’ minor hit Kids With Guns in 2006. What makes Blank Project such a surprise, then, is not that it’s appeared in age where no classic artist stays out of commission for so long, but that it’s so good on its own terms. It’s resolutely not a nostalgia project, but a smooth and smoky record which sounds utterly contemporary amidst the sparse electronic groove of producer Kieran ‘Four Tet’ Hebden and vividly emotive, thanks to Cherry’s softly experienced tones (fellow Swedish pop star Robyn also contributes one vocal). Sadly, in part instigated by the death of her mother in 2009, she has said its creation is an attempt to act out the sense of urgency which this encounter with mortality has given her.

Neneh Cherry plays SWG3, Glasgow, on Friday 30 January. The album Blank Project is out now on Smalltown Supersound.

THE NEW YEAR WILL SEE HER HEAD OUT IN SUPPORT OF LAST YEAR’S BLANK PROJECT, HER FIRST ALBUM IN 18 YEARS AND UNEXPECTEDLY ONE OF THE FINEST RECORDS OF 2014

Ana Cruzalegui & Alasdair Polson Married 12 April 2014

A

marriage made at match.com, Ana Cruzalegui and Alasdair Polson wed on 12 April 2014 in the small village of Aberlour. When it came to the inspiration for her big day, make-up artist Ana turned to fashion royalty. “I absolutely loved Margherita Missoni’s wedding. The lace detail and romantic atmosphere was beautiful. I also wanted a lot of delicate textures in keeping with a romantic feel so went for white roses and peonies, lace, ivory and pale shades of blush. “More importantly I wanted a wedding that spoke about Alasdair and me, with our own personal touches and adding in a bit of my culture, as I’m originally from Peru.” As Alasdair grew up in Aberlour, the couple decided to marry there with the church service at the Sacred Heart, then walked the guests down the hill to the Fleming Hall with the entire Aberlour Pipe Band leading the way. Being that Aberlour is so famous for its whisky, the couple incorporated this into their style of wedding invitations and outside decoration with the help of the local cooperage who lent them beautiful casks to use as outdoor tables.

Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, House for an Art Lover provides an excellent cultural attraction and tourist destination, while also being one of the city’s finest wedding and events venues. The House is home to the popular Art Lovers Café, Gallery and Shop and hosts regular art, design and architecture related events in its purpose built studios and seminar rooms.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS | 31 “We also had plenty of Aberlour 16 to go round and that may have contributed to the party atmosphere,“ says Ana, “And from what I heard the party kept on going until 7 in the morning.” As the couple have both lived in Glasgow for so many years, they also wanted to incorporate a few touches from the city. “Our seating chart was a poster of the old underground map and we even used real tickets as our place cards, stamping the date of our wedding on them. Thank you SPT for helping us with that.” Ana also created a Peruvian cocktail for people to try; with her father having bottles of Pisco, a grape brandy, flown over from Lima.

Favourite photo: The photo of our church service (pictured right); our friends and family formed a choir and sang Somebody to Love by Queen led by my Man of Honour Fraser Gilmore. Totally unconventional. It was amazing.

Katy and Chris Orr Married 13 September 2014

K

aty and Chris Orr grew up together in Cardross and Chris surprised Katy on Hogmanay last year by getting down on one knee on an overnight trip to Dunblane Hydro. Nine months later they wed in St Peter’s Church in Partick followed by a reception at nearby Cottiers. “We had quite a hard time trying to find a venue with lots of character,” says Katy. “When we saw the theatre at Cottiers, we didn't need to look anywhere else. The building is as beautiful inside as it is outside and it made for an atmospheric yet relaxed location for our wedding, which is exactly what we were looking for” A traditional Scottish wedding in theme, the boys wore tartan on the day, Chris' cousin piped the newly weds into the reception followed by a good bit of ceilidh dancing to music provided by ceilidh band Ceilidhonia. “They were amazing,” says Katy. “They play a nice mix of ceilidh, classics and current music with a Scottish twist. We were so happy when they were available for our wedding and they did not disappoint” “We’ve got lots of special memories of our big day,” says Katy, “but there’s one photo that’s a particular favourite. It’s

of the whole wedding party outside Cottiers. I think it's taken in between posed photos and we are all just milling around, chatting to one another. Everyone looks happy and relaxed, it just catches the essence of the day”. Katy’s advice to other brides? “Keep it simple and don't sweat the small stuff. The most important thing is that everyone has fun.”

Ashley and David Hitchon Married 05 September 2014

C

hildhood sweethearts Ashley and David first met at Lenzie Academy and were married on 05 September 2014 after a two year engagement. David popped the question on a romantic weekend in Edinburgh. Ashley said ‘Yes’ and the bride-to-be immediately started to scour the internet and bridal magazines for inspiration for their big day. “For a venue we instantly fell in love with the Auditorium in Oran Mor in the West End and loved how unique the room was. The location was also perfect as it was local for all of our friends and family, which was important for us.” The venue was also the inspiration for her colour scheme. “Our

wedding co-ordinator at Oran Mor suggested using a colour from the room décor, which I liked, so we used blue for the bridesmaids’ dresses, the kilts and in the flowers.” Reflecting on their big day, the couple have no regrets. “Everything was perfect and we particularly loved the speeches. They were all incredibly funny and very touching. But, the most important thing for us was that we were getting married and then celebrating with our friends and family.” Honeymoon for the new Mr & Mrs Hitchon was a trip of a lifetime with a multi-trip tour of America stopping off in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Hawaii and San Francisco.

Interior Designer Lisa Trainer opens the door to her beautiful West End home and reveals she’s not afraid to improve on perfection.

I-ON HOMES | 49

W

hen you spend every day transforming the interiors of some of the most beautiful homes in Glasgow, it must be difficult to reserve some design creativity for your own home. Fortunately for interior designer Lisa Trainer, her own home that she shares with her four children and two dogs is a source of inspiration for her and allows her to experiment with colour and design features. Lisa originally visited the West End house she now calls ‘home’ with a view to renting the property. However, she fell in love with it straight away and knew that as the property had been empty for a while, there was an opportunity to buy it. Both the location of the property and the overall feeling of the house were the perfect combination for Lisa. “I knew I wanted to live in the area as the kids go to school locally but it was important to find the perfect home too and the fact that the house had already been extensively modernised was a real bonus. “I was very lucky that the property was finished to a high standard and, as it was quite neutral, it also allowed me to put my own personal stamp on it. In particular to inject some colour.” Upon moving in, Lisa realised that some changes to the layout of the property would work better for her family. “Originally, there was a cinema room downstairs but, practically, it just didn’t fit with what I needed from the space. It’s now a utility room/larder to fit in with our lifestyle.

50 | PROPERTY AND INTERIORS I also wanted the kitchen to be double height so we now have a gallery/mezzanine level which has really opened the space up.” Having a big family, the kitchen is Lisa’s favourite room and feels it really is the heart of her home. “It’s always so busy with people coming and going. I also love cooking and eating with the whole family. My kitchen table is my favourite piece of furniture. I had it designed and built for my last home over in the South Side. So much has happened around the table over the years so, when we moved to the West End, I had the table stripped back to fit in with our new kitchen.” As a busy interior designer, Lisa uses Pinterest and other forms of social media to stay connected with emerging designers and up-to-date with new trends but she also credits her children with helping her keep her finger on the design pulse, “I would say I’m very fashion-led when it comes to interiors and design but my kids are also a great source of inspiration to me as they have their own interests in design and textiles too.” As for any other changes, her latest project is likely to ensure that her home is the new West End hangout for her friends and family. “I’m currently having a bespoke wine cellar and bar designed and installed in our basement,” reveals Lisa. “I can’t wait until it’s finished.” We’ll also drink to that.

LE CHARDON, VAL D’ISÈRE Finding a place to stay in the world's top ski resorts can make or break your trip. Enter the luxurious world of Le Chardon Mountain Lodges and you’ll be amazed at how much those little touches count… words ∙ Nicky Howden

L

ocated high up in the Savoie area of France, 1,850 metres above sea level, Val d’Isère is one of the Alps’ most exclusive resorts and hottest ski spots in Europe. And with its snowy slopes, bustling little town and après ski, it’s got it all going on. For me, skiing abroad has always been on the bucket list but, if I was going to do it, I would do it in style. Checking in at Le Chardon, the largest of the five luxury catered lodges in the collection, I knew instantly I’d more than ticked this wish list box. From the chalet staff lined up to welcome the chauffeured car from the airport to the fluffy slippers by the entrance, there was an overwhelming sense of indulgence and I’d only seen the ‘boot room’ - an area with dedicated ski boot warmers of course.

The traditional five storey chalet has 10 en-suite bedrooms that accommodate up to 20 guests. Every room is sumptuous yet cosy featuring imposing wooden beams, soft plush carpets, luxury linen and faux fur throws. And if you can see past the indulgent interiors, you’ll be awestruck by the picture perfect views of the Manchet Valley. It is undoubtedly the location that’s incomparable overlooking the serene Vanoise National Park, you can literally ski in and ski out of the place during the ski season, whilst non skiers can kick back in the outdoor hot tub, enjoy an in-house massage (the hot stone signature massage is particularly good), or gorge on delicious freshly baked cakes in front of a roaring log fire in the lounge. The chalets are family owned and run (by a Scottish family no less) and the

LE CHARDON, VAL D’ISÈRE | 57

attention to detail and level of service rivals some of the world's leading hotels. From the gourmet chalet dining to the fine wine and Pol Roger Champagne which are all included in your stay, it's about quality and the finer things in life. A freshly brewed coffee brought to my room at the requested 7.30am on the dot couldn’t be more evidence of that. However, the main attraction of Val d’Isère is the skiing. Host to the Winter Olympics and Winter Championships, its diverse terrain offers some of the most technically challenging pistes in the Alps. It’s also got some of the best off piste skiing in Europe. If you’re of beginner level, there are nursery slopes as well as the easier green and blue runs. My advice would be to hire an instructor from Oxygène Val d'Isère Ski School, even if it’s just for a confidence boost – trust me, they really are great. They also offer ski equipment for hire, Le Chardon can arrange the ski and boot fit for you. The important thing to remember before you go though is to dress for the conditions. In January it can be minus 25 so pack your thermals and ski gear. Val d’Isère town centre is full of top skiwear shops but I’d recommend a visit to Tiso's Blues the Ski Shop before you leave to get labels like Poivre Blanc for slightly less. Plus, even if you don't wow on the slopes at least you'll look good trying. After a hard day's work skiing or riding, soak up the après ski scene at Folie Douce. Located at the

top of the Daille cable car, it’s the go-to bar for live music, drinking and dancing. DINNER @ THE WESTERN CLUB RESTAURANT words Susie Cormack Bruce · photos Susie Lowe

T

here are some places in Glasgow that hold a certain allure. For me one such place is The Western Club in Royal Exchange Square. As the city’s oldest private members’ club, it’s long held my fascination and since childhood I’ve longed to know what lay behind those doors, all the while glancing up to the windows, each perfectly framing a small table lamp. So when I heard that this great Glasgow institution would be opening its restaurant doors for the first time in its 190 year history to non-members, I made a booking double quick. I wasn’t risking the club’s members calling time on my entry into this revered building. This new venture is the result of a partnership between the club and veteran restaurateur, Alan Tomkins, the man behind a number of Glasgow institutions including Urban Bar and Grill and Vronis and upon entering, first impressions were very good. While there was a definite air of exclusivity, it was still very inviting with my husband and I greeted by a young apron clad waitress who checked our reservation before directing us to the first floor.

The dining room itself is the work of designer Amanda Rosa and she’s managed to bring just the right amount of modern to the space, whilst maintaining some classic old-school elegance. While Rosa’s been clever in her use of mirrors and statement lighting, those looking for a bling-bling style bar vibe to décor or atmosphere should apply elsewhere. We were shown to our table, which offered a lovely double aspect onto the light festooned square, by Andrew, who provided an excellent service for the duration of our meal – especially when it came to recommending the wine, a delicious Chateau d’Eau organic Pinot Noir, £29.95. The menu is similar in design to Tomkins' neighbouring Urban Bar & Grill with a contemporary classic feel to the dishes and an abundance of seasonal Scottish ingredients. To begin, I chose the Devilled Livers, £9.50, and my husband started with his favourite, Cullen Skink, £7.50. My livers were well spiced with a good kick of Worcestershire sauce and melted like a mousse in the mouth while the creamy soup ordered by my other half got rave reviews.

DINNER | 61 For a main, I went with Andrew’s recommendation of Roast Venison, accompanied by a Potato Rosti and Parsnip Puree, £23. The plate also featured a delicious glossy raspberry infused gravy which cut through the richness of the pink, juicy venison. I was more than happy with my choice until I tried my husband’s herb crumbed Rack of Perthshire Lamb, served with potato fondant and a tomato fondue, £22.50. Food envy truly set in as the lamb was nothing short of perfect. Rosy pink in colour and so soft you could cut it with a fork, this was my food heaven. While my husband made a brave attempt at finishing his butterscotch laden Toffee and Walnut pudding, £7, I had to admit defeat on my cheese board, £12.50. Note to self: starter or cheese, never both. The Western Club isn’t the place if you’re looking for a riotous night out – thankfully, as Glasgow has no shortage of those – but if you’re looking to enjoy an elegant night with friends, a special family celebration or an intimate tête-àtête, it would get my vote.

DINNER TIME

DID YOU KNOW… that free range eggs have a third less cholesterol, a quarter less saturated fat, two times more omega-3 fatty acids, three times more vitamin E and seven times more betacarotene than eggs from caged birds?

The 500 Miles charity, set up by quadruple amputee Olivia Giles, is inviting people to sit down to dinner on 07 March 2015, in a bid to raise £500,000 to help those with mobility issues in Africa. The BIG dinner is a one off event involving hundreds of separate dinners across the world – all linked by social media and a web streamed celebrity BIG dinner hosted by Fred MacAulay. SUGAR AND SPICE Sick of mulled wine but still keen on sipping a winter warmer? Try Kopparberg’s Spiced Apple Cider for a pleasing bit of seasonal spice. Served warm in a mug and garnished with a cinnamon stick, it’s sure to heat your bones on cold January nights.

GUILT FREE CHOCOLATE Who says chocolate’s a no-no if you’re on a health kick? Not the clever people at IQ chocolate who have packed their Peruvian cocoa bean bars full of superfood ingredients including coconut blossom nectar. Best of all, they taste terrific and come in at under 200 calories a bar. Glasgow stockists include Wholefoods Market in Giffnock and Roots, Fruits and Flowers in the West End.

SMOKE AND DINNERS

TASTE MATTERS

If you like a little theatre with your food, Finnieston’s latest restaurant Porter & Rye is big on molecular cooking, fusing natural ingredients with the latest technology (dehydrators, sous vide and thermomix machines) to create amazing taste experiences and visual feasts. Think Heston Blumenthal and you’re on the right track. Porter & Rye, 1131 Argyle St, G3 8ND.

Tastecard membership gives diners 50 per cent off their total food bill or two meals for the price of one at thousands of restaurants nationwide. ‘A la Carte’ is always offered so it’s great for business as well as personal use. With more than one hundred Glasgow restaurants, including NYC Grill, pictured, now accepting Tastecard, it’s a great discount dining option. www.tastecard.co.uk

BACK ODE TO A HAGGIS

Burns Night is upon us again so don’t forget to indulge in our beloved national dish on 25 January. Buy a biggie and use the leftovers to create homemade haggis sausage rolls or, i-on’s favourite, haggis pakora.

NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLUTIONS

Instead of vowing to lose weight or exercise more, try an alternative resolution that you are actually motivated to keep this year. Here are our favourite resolutions for the year ahead… Pause before posting – it’s too easy to overshare on social media and your boss really doesn’t need to see you posing in front of your bathroom mirror. Print more photographs – scrolling through an album on Facebook is slightly less nostalgic than flicking through an actual photo album. Quit the gym – rid yourself of feeling guilty about spending money every month and pound the pavements instead, should you feel the need that is... Start a bucket list – decide on 10 things you’d really like to do and get on to them. Toss the ‘toxic’ friends – anyone who makes you feel bad about your life/weight/hair needs to go.
