MY I-ON GLASGOW Gerry McCulloch Photo: Susie Lowe

A

s the face of Scottish football on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday and host of Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard phone-in, Gerry McCulloch is probably best known as a broadcaster. But he’s also become a familiar face in his other role as resident Saturday night pianist and singer at Charlie Parker’s Piano Bar in The Corinthian Club. The city’s best kept secret? Sunrise from the Kingston Bridge looking west. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? The Bikram Yoga Studio. It’s a great way to unwind, de-stress and have a superb full body workout at the same time. I first discovered it when I lived in London and have since been to classes in Ibiza and Hong Kong. I was delighted when I heard Glasgow finally had a Bikram Studio. Where would you take visitors to show them the ‘real’ Glasgow? The Horseshoe Bar would be a perfect 'starter for 10' for any tourist. It's not showy, it's down to earth, the drink is good, there's plenty of it, there's karaoke and the atmosphere is good without being 'in your face'. Where’s the best place to go on a Sunday? The Brunswick is great. I took my wife, Annemarie, there for brunch and even she thought the fish and chips were superb (a hard woman to please). The burgers are awesome too and you're always guaranteed some good chat from total strangers.

Around the city - Where you’ll find me: Enjoying a coffee: Upstairs in the Silverburn Starbucks. Lunch with friends: Citation on Wilson Street. Pamper session: At home relaxing with my daughter, Gracie.

THE 1975 Words: David Pollock

D

escribed by their singer Matt Healy as “four stoner muppets”, The 1975 were one of the most obvious yet somehow least likely pop successes of 2013. For a start, their frontman’s own pedigree doesn’t suggest pop stardom to anyone raised on a diet of populist telly in the 1980s and ‘90s, considering his dad is Auf Wiedersehen Pet star Tim Healy and his mum is sometime Coronation Street, Loose Women and Celebrity Big Brother alumnus Denise Welch. They’re roots which place his family firmly in the north east

of England, but his group are one of a new generation of bright pop outfits to have emerged from Manchester in recent years. Healy and his fellow members of The 1975 – guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, drummer George Daniel – all met when they were pupils at Wilmslow High School in the Cheshire suburbs around Manchester, and their first musical experiments together came when the youngest of their number (Daniel) was 14. This was back

MUSIC | 23

FOLLOWING SUPPORT DATES FOR MUSE AND THE ROLLING STONES, AND TOUR DATES AROUND THE WORLD, THEIR SELF TITLED SEPTEMBER DEBUT ALBUM WENT STRAIGHT TO NUMBER ONE IN THE UK

in 2002, and the next few years were spent practising their craft under a variety of guises. Among the names which went up outside the music bars of their city were Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep and Drive Like I Do, playing a mixture of covers and their own material. It wouldn’t be until a full decade into their career, such as it had been, that they would start using the name The 1975. Apparently the inspiration for it came from a book of Beat poetry which Healy was given by an old psychedelic rocker who he met on holiday in Majorca one summer, reading it much later and finding that someone had inscribed the date ‘01 June, The 1975’ on the inside back cover. If it was an omen, it was a good one. Their rise has been swift, not necessarily because young bands getting places quickly is such a strange occurrence, but because they’ve met with truly huge success in the matter of months they’ve been active. Starting out as The

1975 at the start of 2012, their early EPs Facedown and Sex met with moderate success later in the year, including national radio airplay, before Chocolate hit the UK top 20 early in 2013. All of the above came to define a sleek guitar pop sound with summery reggae edges, although Chocolate’s pinnacle of chart success to date suggests that it isn’t in the more transient world of singles fame that they’ll make their mark. Following support dates for Muse and The Rolling Stones, and tour dates around the world, their self titled September debut album went straight to number one in the UK, as well as breaking the top 30 in America and the top 10 on the US rock chart. Reportedly their new material channels Bobby Brown and Alexander O’Neal, the truth of which this show should demonstrate. The 1975 play the Academy, Glasgow, on Friday 07 February.

Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, House for an Art Lover provides an excellent cultural attraction and tourist destination, while also being one of the city’s finest wedding and events venues. The House is home to the popular Art Lovers Café, Gallery and Shop and hosts regular art, design and architecture related events in its purpose built studios and seminar rooms.

WEDDING DRESS TRENDS 2014

Perhaps the most considered outfit a woman will ever wear, we speak to some of the best bridal designers about the biggest trends in bridal attire for 2014 and the inspiration behind their new collections. Words: Victoria Martin

WEDDING DRESS TRENDS 2014 | 27

Ian Stuart “My 2014 Frill Me collection is very ying and yang. Conscious of the current changes in bridal wear and the trend for simplicity, I have created gowns that capture this mood, whilst keeping true to my own handwriting. “In contrast, I have ensured that my primary audience of individual, dramatic and quirky brides have the most imaginative and innovative gowns to choose from, with exaggerated silhouettes, inventive pattern cutting, and elaborate decorative techniques. “Understanding the diversity of what brides are looking for has been my inspiration and challenge and, for the label’s 10th anniversary, I have made sure that the collection will be both sophisticated and refined, whilst remaining as eclectic and inspiring as ever.” www.ianstuart-bride.com, Tel: 020 8961 9467.

28 | I-ON WEDDING SPECIAL

Stephanie Allin “For my 2014 collection, The Look of Love, I have used the most exquisitely handpicked beaded fabrics, beautiful silk satins and delicate Italian lace to create the most flattering and easy to wear shapes. The collection, inspired by Luxury London in the 1920s and 30s, oozes glamour, timelessness and classically romantic shapes and styles. “The use of dramatic dark flower back detail accessorised with tulle shoulder drapes sit beautifully alongside soft, romantic chiffon skirts and draped bodices. Jewelled necklines and asymmetric lace features create incredible silhouettes and staple, delicate shrugs help transform any dress.” www.stephanieallin.net, Tel: 01792 361 477.

WEDDING DRESS TRENDS 2014 | 29

Sassi Holford “For my designs, the emphasis is on femininity: for the bodice the key lines are the elegant portrait neckline and bustier detailing. “Many of my gowns offer coverage on the shoulders and arms as the trend away from strapless continues. I think silhouettes should be designed to make a statement – from an impressive ball gown to a flattering column skirt with fluted hem. “During the year, I visited European fabric fairs and this season I am working with a range of impressive textured fabrics in combination with soft, floating fabrics such as fine lace and embroidered tulle.” www.sassiholford.com, Tel: 01823 256 100.

30 | I-ON WEDDING SPECIAL

Stewart Parvin “My bridal collection consists of a variety of silhouettes and fabrications, all staying true to my signature aesthetic of glamorous, understated luxury. “Lace is certainly prevalent; full lace gowns with illusion necklines, a classic column shape and a simple, well proportioned lace accent on a show stopping fishtail. Less is definitely more for 2014, with clean chic lines and perfectly proportioned design features. “Silk Mikado is an important fabric, with its texture and weight lending a glamorous edge to the most understated of gowns. For the Get Happy gown, a modern take on the classic ball gown bridal shape, the bodice is expertly shaped in a delicately corded French lace to elongate and flatter the bride.” Stewart Parvin, www.stewartparvin.com, Tel: 0207 589 5529.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS Four couples share their big day with i-on

Louise married Mark O’Brien on 07 April 2013 in 29, Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow.

“I

first met Mark in a club on Boxing Day 2006. He proposed five years later on the Brooklyn Bridge on New Year’s Day in New York. “Making the wedding personal and having all of our favourite things was really important to us. We fell in love with 29 as soon as we saw it as it was classic and elegant which was exactly what we were looking for. “I had a few shopping days for dresses and I tried on every style but I knew that I wanted a plain dress. I finally found the perfect dress on a trip to Eternity Bride in Aberdeen.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS | 33 “Mark was very hands on and made all of our wedding invitations and we designed all of the table settings, candles and flowers ourselves too. “One of my favourite things about the whole day was the ceremony. We had a humanist service which was very personal to us as we got to write our own vows and select our own readings. “We walked down the aisle to Elbow’s One Day Like This and chose The Beach Boys, Wouldn’t it be Nice as our first dance. We both loved every part of the day and wouldn’t do anything differently. In fact, we would love to do it all again.”

Amanda Boal married David Drennan at Paisley Abbey followed by a reception at Mar Hall on 25 May 2013.

“D

avid and I were childhood friends but grew apart as teenagers. My sister set us up on a date after I had commented that he was looking ‘quite fit’ after passing him on the street one day. “Two years later, David surprised me with a trip to Lapland and proposed during a reindeer sleigh ride through a mystical, snowy forest. I said ‘Yes’ and we started planning the wedding straight away. We decided to have the ceremony in Paisley Abbey and then the beautiful Mar Hall for the reception. “I knew I wanted a lace, fitted, strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline and found ‘The One’ by Essence of Australia. I made a few tweaks so I love the fact that I’m the only person to have this dress. David’s dad owns Wilkinson’s Highlandwear so, naturally, we got all of the groomsmen’s blue Clark ancient kilts from there. “I was a nervous wreck getting ready but, just as I was waiting to go into the Abbey, all of the nerves just suddenly

washed away. One of my favourite moments of the day was when I first saw David looking back at me. I walked down the aisle with the biggest smile on my face. “I wouldn’t do anything differently and the best advice I would give to any couple is that you can’t please everyone so do what makes you both happy.”

Nicole Hoggan married Kevin McEnaney in Sloans in Glasgow City Centre on 07 September 2013.

“I

first met Kevin at school and we bumped into each other years later in a local pub and have been together ever since. “He proposed to me on a horse and carriage ride whilst on holiday in Marrakesh and we got married two years later after we had finished refurbishing our new house. “I have pretty definite tastes and knew that I wanted an old fashioned Victorian theme so we decided that Sloans would be the perfect fit for our theme. I also collected vintage china and props for the table to give it an authentic, eclectic feel. “Again, when it came to my dress, I knew exactly what I wanted so I went to Susanne Christyne in George Square to have my dress made. She was amazing and I absolutely loved my dress. “I walked down the aisle to Glasgow Love Theme from Love Actually and for our first dance we had At Last by Etta James.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS | 39 “We had 100 guests during the day and another 140 more at night so it was a big guest list to coordinate. “One of my favourite moments of the day was sitting down at dinner and seeing that all the hard work and planning had paid off and listening to all our family and friends laughing and enjoying themselves. “For entertainment we had an amazing band called The Desperados and they had everyone up dancing all night. “One piece of advice I would give to any bride on their wedding day is to take three steps back and take it all in as it’s over fast.”

Passionate about flowers and decor, Jordana Patrick began offering her skills in designing and creating dramatic décor in 2007. Since then her Jordana Event Design & Floristry business has grown from strength and for the past two years ago she has been transforming venues, creating unique and wonderful settings from her West End base, where she now has a flower shop, design studio and showroom all under one roof. “I love meeting with clients for the first time and believe weddings should reflect both their personalities. In the early stages creating a mood board is a great way to give couples a clear vision of the style that they’re most drawn to and lots

of couples create their own on Pinterest. There are so many options for decor and flowers so it’s great for visualising the design concepts and ideas. It’s important for me that the bride has selected her dress and chosen the colour of the bridesmaids before beginning the décor design. “Wedding season 2014 really can’t come fast enough for me. I have so many fabulous designs for weddings with pastels popular for us as well as detailed linen, lots of textures and luxurious fabrics. Our wedding floral trends are the bigger the better and with lots of finishing touches. It really is all in the detail for 2014.” www.jordanaevents.com

David Bryce, photo by Susie Lowe

Photography David Bryce

David Bryce is an award-winning photographer with over 20 years’ experience. His accolades include UK Wedding Photographer of the Year and Scottish Wedding Photographer of the Year. Despite having photographed nearly 1,000 weddings, he still gets excited at capturing lasting memories of each wedding he photographs. “Before booking your photographer do lots of research online. While you don’t need to book a local photographer, it’s important to meet face to face to get a feel for their work and their personality. Rapport is very important as on the day you will want to feel comfortable and while recommendations can be good, the wedding photographer your friend had may not necessarily be the right one for you. A pre wedding shoot is also a great idea to allow couple to become comfortable in front of the camera and get to know the photographer. “On the big day it’s important to prioritise and allow time for family and couple photographs. A minimum of an hour and a half between the end of the ceremony and the start of the meal allows the couple enough time for official photos as well as the chance to enjoy the drinks reception. Most photographers will be there from the bride’s final preparations until at least the start of the meal, so photographs will be taken for the majority of the day, and most of the time without anyone noticing.

46 | I-ON WEDDING SPECIAL

Jay Feeney, photo by Oli Mival

“Most experienced and professional photographers prices start at around £1000 and this can easily increase to £2000+ depending on what is required i.e. length of coverage, choice of albums. As the photographs are going to be the lasting record of the day it’s important to set aside appropriate budget for this.” www.davidbryce.com

Entertainment Jay Feeney

With a long history of event and venue management behind him, Jay Feeney set up Freak Music to provide an easy, reliable source of elite wedding and corporate entertainment and the company has rapidly become one of the UK’s leading

Liggy Morgan

entertainment agencies, delivering music acts across all types of events from celebrity weddings to royal parties. “When it comes to choosing wedding entertainment I think there has to be a balance between the tastes of the bride and groom and the accessibility for their guests. It is nice to do something different from the classic wedding cheesy music format, but don’t go way out there. Many bands cover well known mainstream songs but play in a quirky style or incorporate novelty sets. Some acts will also perform a ceilidh selection so you can mix things up to your taste. We’re delighted that more people are booking acts that introduce a flare of originality. Whether it’s vintage or retro style weddings bands, world music acts, Celtic drumming troupes or even surprise singing chefs, people are starting to think beyond Abba. “First things first though; when it comes to the booking itself, check the venue size and capacity – there’s obviously

THE EXPERTS’ GUIDE TO PLANNING A WEDDING | 47 no point in booking a big band for 12 guests. Also, check with the venue about any limitations regarding band size and music volume, and ask them about available stage area and their variation in stage setups. “Prices will also vary significantly depending on the act and size. As a ballpark figure though, a standard high quality 5 piece cover band would be around £1,500.” ww.freakmusic.co.uk

Cakes Liggy Morgan

Liggy’s Cakes has been running since 2007, with her Bearsden shop opening in 2012. Winner of the prestigious VOWS wedding industry award for 2011, 2012 and 2013, Liggy provides cakes for weddings across Scotland and is the preferred supplier at some of Scotland’s leading hotels. “When it comes to wedding cakes, the old saying that you get what you pay for rings true. Great tasting wedding cakes are made from scratch by artisan bakers, iced and decorated by highly skilled designers who should always deliver and set the cake up on the day. As a result, 80-100 portion cakes should cost from £300 but can go into four figure sums for

Glasgow 0141 942 6620

something truly bespoke and unique. The time and skill required to make a wedding cake is often far greater than people anticipate so for anyone thinking of making their own I’d say consider cupcakes or ‘naked’ i.e. uniced cakes for ease. Also it’s important to consider your venue when deciding on your cake. Will it be displayed in the corner of a room or will it be viewed at 360°? We can use polystyrene dummy tiers to make the cake bigger but remember that whilst tall cakes make a big impression, more relaxed styles such as informal ‘naked’ cakes, can also make a big, delicious impact.” www.liggyscakes.co.uk

Beauty Kasia Ojrzynska

With more than 20 years’ experience in the beauty industry and a Master’s Degree in Cosmetology, Kasia works from her friendly West End salon Esteem, where preparing make-up for bridal parties is one of her team’s favourite bookings. “While excited brides tend to focus on their make-up for the big day itself, smart brides know it’s best to start thinking about skincare months in advance. At Esteem we use a

‘Skin Scope’ to analysis your skin to recommend beneficial treatments that will have skin looking radiant on the big day. “If it’s not already part of your routine, a monthly facial is a great idea as it will maintain the skin’s health. I’d also recommend making time for a full body exfoliation and spray tan to get your body glowing along with some waxing sessions – especially for those going on honeymoon straight away. “Hands are a big focus on the day and although I’d limit the long lasting Shellac French polish to the bride’s fingers, both bride and groom would enjoy an extra softening paraffin wax treatment to get hands ready for the wedding rings close-up. “Always book at least one make-up trial before the big day as you don’t want to leave anything to chance. They also give you the opportunity to see how your skin reacts to new products, how long the make-up lasts, and allows you to try before-you-buy items like lip gloss, lipstick and powder all, of which you’ll need for touch-ups throughout the day.” www.esteembeauty.co.uk

Flowers Nick Priestly

Kasia Ojrzynska

As the MD of Mood Flowers in Glasgow, Nick Priestly heads up one of the leading design teams for wedding flowers in Scotland. “When it comes to choosing a florist, ask around. Take recommendations from friends, family and colleagues as well as your venue. Once you have a few florists in mind follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to get a feel for the variety and quality of the work they are producing week-in week-out. “For flowers main things to consider are the colour scheme, so that different elements of the flowers flow throughout the day whilst not becoming over-themed, and seasonality - be aware that unless you are getting married in April, May or June you won’t be carrying peonies down the aisle. Also personalising your wedding by using unique combinations of flowers or unusual vessels will help make your day more memorable for guests. “As weddings vary in size there is no typical spend and most florists can create beautiful flowers for all budgets. Typically brides will spend around five to 10 per cent of their overall wedding budget on flowers. As a guide the average hand tied bridal bouquet will cost from £70-95 depending on the size and varieties of flowers used. “In terms of trends we’re seeing a move away from “vintage” bridal bouquet but still a relaxed informal look. We are also designing lots of white and ivory schemes for 2014 to complement silver, grey and black bridemaids’ dresses.” www.moodflowers.com

O

n previous visits to Arran, I’ve gone down the great outdoors route but, after a heavy few weeks, it was a great indoors treat I was looking for so booked the Island Escape spa day at Auchrannie’s beautiful sanctuary, ASPA. The package – which also includes a glass of fizz, lunch and use of the leisure facilities – offered the choice of two treatments from a list of five – my preference being the Back Massage and the Salt & Oil Polish. The massage was just what I needed and my therapist Tara definitely had healing hands. Next up came the body polish, a treatment I’ve always loved. Post treatment I was offered a delicious raspberry sorbet and on retiring to the spa’s relaxation room I had to agree with another guest that at £89, the Island Escape Package was incredible value and one I wouldn’t hesitate in booking again.

KENNETH MACLEOD TRAVEL

W

hen times are tough, a great holiday becomes more important than ever. Choose wisely and you’ll escape the stresses and strains of everyday life but choose badly and it won’t just be temperatures that are soaring during that much needed break. So how do you guarantee your dream trip will not turn into a nightmare? The best bet is to book with a name you can trust and with over 35 years in the travel business Kenneth Macleod Travel is such a name. This privately owned Independent Travel Agent was originally founded by Kenneth Macleod, who remained at the reins until his retirement in 1994 and is now owned by three partners; Elaine Tait, Julian Stark and Brian Sculthorp. “Customer service and attention to detail are our main focus,” explains managing director Elaine Tait. “The staff are key and have been with us for many years. They have travelled extensively and continue to do so at every opportunity. All have a passion for exploring new and exciting destinations and the list of places visited by our staff grows year on year.”

Just some of the exciting destinations visited by the staff in recent years include, Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands, India, America including New York, Boston, Cape Cod, San Francisco and Florida. Several of the staff have visited Canada’s east and west coasts as well as the exotic jewels of the Far East, including Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam. They have also visited India, the Indian Ocean Islands of The Seychelles, Maldives and Mauritius and Australia. If your travel interests are Africa you couldn’t be in better hands as the continent is a favourite with the team; Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and South Africa including the beautiful Garden Route are all personal recommendations. The team has also visited vast areas in Europe including St Petersburg and had the pleasure of travelling to Venice on board the Orient Express. This, together with years of experience, helps the team at Kenneth Macleod Travel to make first hand recommendations and to tailor bookings to suit individual requirements and it’s this level of service that makes them the preferred partner in Scotland of luxury tour and tailor-made holiday specialist

DINNER @ THE GANNET Words: Tracey McCallum · Photos: Susie Lowe

O

ver the past couple of years Finnieston has really come into its own with restaurants, bars and quirky shops opening every other week. What once was a depressing part of town offering little more than a few old men’s pubs and an Indian restaurant is now a bustling mecca for lovers of good food and it’s replaced the West End as my new favourite place to hang out. One of the most recent openings is The Gannet. The name immediately caught my attention as well as the fact that owners and chefs, Peter McKenna and Ivan Stein have brought life to a building that lay derelict for years. The interior gives a nod to the history of the building with lots of exposed stonework and wood but it’s a cool, contemporary space for eating and drinking. My friend and I were tempted by the early evening menu offering a choice of three starters, three main courses and three desserts with two courses at £15 or three for £19.

Gluttony being my most favourite deadly sin, we kicked off the evening with a glass of Merlot, £3.25 a glass of Pinot Grigio, £4.25 and a serving of bread £1.50. Warm and crisp on the outside, light on the inside, this was exactly how fresh bread should be. Delicious and dangerously moreish. For starters I chose the home smoked salmon with soft quail’s egg, fennel and horseradish cream. My dining companion opted for the Stornoway black pudding scotch duck egg with sauce gribiche; a mayonnaise style egg sauce. My starter arrived looking pretty and summery with the pink of the salmon, the yellow of the egg and the pale green of the fennel and every mouthful tasted as good as it looked. The black pudding scotch duck egg was pretty substantial and finished before I could steal a bite so obviously a hit too. For our mains I opted for the West Munich red braised beef cheek with parsnips and potato puree. The beef was melt in the mouth and, paired with the textures of the creamy potato

DINNER | 75

THE BEEF WAS MELT IN THE MOUTH AND, PAIRED WITH THE TEXTURES OF THE CREAMY POTATO AND CRISP PARSNIP RIBBONS, A REAL TREAT.

and crisp parsnip ribbons, a real treat. Simple ingredients cooked to perfection. The hake, new potatoes, root veg, kale and green herb dressing my friend chose was a colourful plateful with the fish golden on the outside, succulent on the inside and again packed with fresh flavour. My friend said he enjoyed it so much, he’d choose the dish again. For dessert it was a crunchy, crispy pear crumble topped with delicious, hot, stewed fruit and a generous scoop of vanilla ice-cream for my friend. I should have opted for something lighter but, rather fittingly, I am a gannet and greedily picked the chocolate fondant served with tonka bean ice cream. If you’re a chocolate fan like me then this dessert is heavenly. I loved the subtle spiciness of the tonka bean in the ice cream and it added another dimension to the chocolate. A fabulous ending to a stunning meal. The Gannet, 1155 Argyle St, G3 8TB, Tel: 0141 204 2081.

TAKE THREE

Scotland’s waters produce some of the best seafood in the world so it’s only right that Glasgow should have more than its fair share of first class fish restaurants. If you’re swithering over where to book, here’s our current favourite three.

The Fish People Café, photo by Susie Lowe

THE FISH PEOPLE CAFÉ This seafood specialist has been wowing diners since it opened in 2012. From the traditional – hand dived Barra scallops – to the unusual – Tandoori baked sea bass – the fish is excellent in both quality and value but then when it’s owned by Andy Bell, the neighbouring fishmonger, that’s to be expected. Good for… the best and possibly cheapest oysters in the city. Expect to pay… £10 for the quick two course lunch menu with a la carte around £15 a main. Anything else? The restaurant won Best Seafood Restaurant in Scotland at the 2013 Scottish Restaurant Awards. The Fish People Café, 350a Scotland St, G5 8QF, Tel: 0141 429 8787.

Gandolfi Fish

GANDOLFI FISH You can’t talk about the seafood scene in Glasgow without mentioning Gandolfi Fish. It’s not the cheapest fish restaurant in the city – hence its popularity for special occasions – but when it comes to something as delicate as fish do you really want to be skimping on the quality of your salmon? Good for… top notch food in first class surroundings. Expect to pay… £6 for Cullen Skink, £12 for beer battered haddock and chips and £20 per half lobster Thermidor. Anything else? The restaurant now offers a fish-to-go takeaway service too. Gandolfi Fish, 84-86 Albion St, G1 1NY, Tel: 0141 552 9475.

TAKE THREE | 77

HAPPY PRICES, HAPPY CALORIES

OLD SALTY’S A newish name to Finnieston’s coterie of quality eateries, Old Salty’s is a modern take on the old style chippy with a sit-in or takeaway option. Along with the usual suspects, the menus also feature some surprise options such as curried scallops, chicken schnitzel and corn beef hash. It’s a chippy Jim, but not as we know it. Good for… post bar/pre-club tucker. Expect to pay… £1.95 for chips, £6.95 for hake and £13.95 for a bottle of house wine. Anything else? Doors open at 7am and they do a mighty fine Scottish breakfast. Old Salty’s, 1126 Argyle St, G3 8TD, Tel: 0141 357 5677.

Fill up on a selection of wee plates from £3.50 and healthy sushi from £2.20 Hurray to a fabulous 2014! For more details or to book your table call us on 0141 357 3033
