THANK YOU

i-on Glasgow this month

A

big thank you to all who took part in our readers’ survey. We were delighted with the response and it was great to learn that over half – 56 per cent – who took part pick up i-on each time you see it and a hardcore 39 per cent have been loyally reading i-on for over five years. Good to hear you like the good things in life too… 39 per cent of you eat out 1-3 times per week and 41 per cent take holidays or short breaks at least three times a year. We’ll use these results to ensure that i-on stays relevant to your lifestyle.

espite the need for cosy coats and chunky scarves, rest assured, spring is on its way. At least that’s what the calendar tells us - although whether Mother Nature pays heed to dates is another matter. But here at i-on, we’re ever the optimists so in this issue we welcome the new season with a look at the key womenswear trends that will be soon be winging their way to a shop near you on page 26. As well as looking forward we also get nostalgic with Tina Warren, co-founder of Club Noir – the world’s longest running burlesque club – which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Tina looks back on page 22. On the competition front, we have a two night stay at the historic Dornoch Castle up for grabs on page 08. The prize includes a bespoke whisky tasting from the hotel’s resident experts Philip and Simon Thompson. Our last competition winner was Kate McMahon who won a luxury overnight stay for two at the luxury resort of Turnberry. Until next time, enjoy i-on

A DECADE OF

DECADENCE Photos: Martin Phillimore/Paul Herley, courtesy of Club Noir

You may think Las Vegas is the jewel in the burlesque crown but Glasgow is in fact home to the biggest and longest running burlesque club in the world, Club Noir. In celebration of Club Noir’s 10th anniversary, co-founder Tina Warren looks back on the early years of this oh so naughty-but-nice night out.

C

lub Noir started out as so many of the best clubs start out - as a night that I would like to attend and that noone else was doing. I imagined an amalgamation of some of the best nights I’d enjoyed in Glasgow and my native London so took a bit of burlesque, cabaret and fetish, added some circus, Rockabilly and vintage, mixed in a pinch of gay club vibe and mashed them all together and, hey presto, Club Noir was conceived.

Although the mighty 02 Academy has been our home for many a year, the first event took place at The Big Joint, a now defunct little known venue that was full of dodgy characters and held a smattering of fetish nights. It was off the main drag and we loved its illicit, speakeasy feel. On that opening night we introduced a whole new entertainment experience to Scotland, including a three foot dwarf bouncer who greeted guests on arrival. From

A DECADE OF DECADENCE | 13

the moment guests stepped through the doors they were in another world - created not least by the imaginatively dressed clientele themselves; a dream world of prom dresses, latex, lingerie, top hats and spats. Vintage music blared from the speakers while a rubber-clad cigarette girl sold nipple tassels. Back then no-one had a clue what they were, let alone what to do with them. Then came the show itself. An intrepid audience of 200 wondered just what this new thing called ‘burlesque’ was so when a beautiful performer all the way from London opened the show, performing in an all-pearl costume, there were a few gasps when she removed her clothes and lost those pearls. It was sensual, risqué and sexy but it was so, so beautiful and tasteful. There followed more stripteasers, comedy acts, cancan dancers and a real live dominatrix who stubbed out a cigarette in her gimp’s mouth. Cue the shocked faces. Some were disgusted, but most were hooked. If truth be told, three of the stripteasers were lap dancers, because we couldn’t get any ‘nice girls’ to striptease for us, no matter how much we ensured them that it would be tasteful. Dita Von Teese was not the superstar she is now. Our reputation as something a bit different quickly spread and we soon needed a bigger venue, that’s when we meet

our saviour - the O2 Academy Glasgow. The manager took a big gamble on us and we have enjoyed a great relationship with this beautiful Art Deco venue ever since. Fast forward a decade and it’s been a rollercoaster ride but one with definitely more highs than lows. We regularly entertain 2,000 revellers, with our themed nights selling out at break neck speed. We’ve been voted one of the top 10 cabaret clubs in the world by New York’s Travel Channel alongside the likes of the legendary Crazy Horse in Paris. We were the first to take burlesque to Siberia. Our performer Chelsea Dagger spawned a worldwide hit song, and Hollywood film star Channing Tatum was inspired to set up his own burlesque club after visiting us. While we’re definitely more experienced we’re still as creative, curious and as experimental as that first night in 2004. And while the shows are more lavish, the audience is still as friendly. Many say the atmosphere we have created has changed their lives and we’ve had countless romances, marriages and babies start out life at Club Noir but I’d like to think that our biggest achievement in these past 10 years has been creating a world where people can be themselves, or the best sensual part of themselves, even if just for one night.

rbroath-born Lesley Wiggins is one of the city’s most recognised faces in business and charity circles. As well as being a Director of Milne Management Ltd, one of Scotland's most respected security companies, Lesley is also a committed charity fundraiser who isn’t afraid of putting her hand in her own pocket to encourage others to do the same. Here she gives she gives some time-out to talk to i-on about her adopted city. Where would you take visitors to show them the ‘real’ Glasgow? The Barras without a doubt. When I first came to Glasgow someone took me there and the memory has lasted forever. If there’s one thing you could change about the city, what would it be? I’d bring the unique one off shops and small businesses of the West End into to the city centre. There’s a special kind of ‘buzz’ in those café bars, etc. Are you going to the Commonwealth Games? If so, which sport are you seeing? I’ve a keen interest in all things related to the Games as our company has been working on the Commonwealth Games Village since the onset so I’m hoping to attend the opening ceremony. I think it will be a spectacular event for Glasgow. Where in the city do you go for a quick escape? The oasis that is 29. Great for a coffee and catch up with friends.

Pollyanna McIntosh Photo: Per Tomas Kjaervik

F

rom her spine chilling performance in The Woman - which saw the Scot pick up three best actress awards - to the riotous role of Size Queen opposite James McAvoy in Irvine Welsh’s Filth, Pollyanna McIntosh is the face to watch. She’s got an innate sense of style too and talks about her personal wardrobe choices here with i-on. I’d describe my style as… entirely dependent on my mood, but I do like to tell a tale or raise a smile. My favourite place to shop in Glasgow is… Mr Ben Retro Clothing. I bought an old bright red military jacket there and they told me the rank of the officer as well as making me laugh like a drain. I’d happily go in just for the patter. The person whose style I most admire is… Björk. I love her playfulness, her love of colour, her subversion and her joy in expressing herself. Similarly Josephine Baker and Blondie. I’ve got a thing about… hats. I’ve been back in the UK for over a year now and I really miss my hats that remain in LA. I have 15 or so here but, well, you know, s’not enough is it? The trend I’m definitely not buying into is… scrunchies. Couldn’t do them then, can’t do them now. My big fashion no-no is… ironic clothing worn without a hint of irony, or humour. I long to see a smile on a hipster’s face.

FOOD

Gregor Munn Photo: Susie Lowe

From the fine dining experience at Gamba to the cool but cosy offering at Cookie in the southside, Gregor Munn is now General Manager of Virginia Place’s Brutti Compadres. With its amazing array of tapas, he’s serving up dishes as varied and as interesting as his C.V. Here he shares his personal food passions with i-on. What’s the best thing about being in the restaurant business? The diversity of people you meet whether customers or staff, it makes every day different. What impresses you most about the restaurant? From the courtyard it looks like a nice wee place but it’s a continental Tardis. The long bar is ideal for a chilled glass of cava, a few small plates and some great people watching. What’s the signature dish at the restaurant? Our menu is always evolving but our haggis croquettes and whisky sauce is one of the most popular dishes. Off duty, which restaurant in the city would you choose to go to for dinner? Upstairs at Stravaigin - especially on a wet Glasgow day when the fire is on. Which chef do you most admire and why? Glasgow’s own Derek Marshall. We worked together for over 11 years setting up and running Gamba. It was his consistency and eye for detail that made it one of the city’s best restaurants and moulded me into who I am.

Drake Words: David Pollock

MUSIC | 25

P

art of the appeal of Drake is that he doesn’t have the background you might expect from a rap megastar, which in turn feeds into his music, giving it a different texture and balance to many of his contemporaries. Born in Toronto in 1986, Aubrey Drake Graham is the son of an unlikely pair of parents: his dad is an African American from Memphis, Tennessee who used to drum for Jerry Lee Lewis, and his mum is a white Jewish Canadian teacher. His parents split up when he was five years old, and their lives would pull him in opposite directions. His father went to jail twice, with a young Drake witnessing one of his arrests, yet his mother raised him in an affluent part of Toronto and, although he wasn’t an outstanding pupil, it was through school that he would get his first big break. At the age of 15 and already a keen amateur actor, Drake was put forward by a friend’s talent agent father for a role in Canadian kid’s soap opera Degrassi: The Next Generation. He took the role of Jimmy Brooks, a young basketball star paralysed by a bullet, from 2001 until 2009. Despite being a familiar face among Canada’s teen audience of the time, though, Drake’s music career started pretty much from scratch. His very earliest exploits came when he was still in the acting day job, and were met with only moderate success, starting with his own independent mixtape Room For Improvement in 2006, a collection of new music which was limited to 6,000 copies. The next year, the self released follow up Comeback Season featured a minor hit in Replacement Girl featuring Trey Songz. His third and final mixtape, 2009’s So Far Gone, would finally see Drake’s potential as an artist take off in its own right, however, with the assistance of his mentor L’il Wayne and a top three US hit single in Best I Ever Had. A trio of US and Canadian number one albums followed – 2010’s Thank Me Later, 2011’s Take Care and last year’s Grammywinning Nothing Was the Same – fuelled by collaborations with some of the biggest names in global hip-hop including Jay-Z, Timbaland, Kanye West, Rihanna, Just Blaze and The Weeknd, as well as Glasgow’s very own Hudson Mohawke on his last record. Although his success hasn’t been quite as all encompassing on this side of the pond, the distinctive combination of cocky but thoughtful raps and the vocal tone of a soul singer means that Drake doesn’t look like he’ll have to return to the acting game to make ends meet any time soon. Drake plays the Hydro Arena, Glasgow, Saturday 15 March.

STYLE - ACCENTED F

rench women really do talk the language of style more fluently than most. Case in point is the impeccably dressed French-born Chloé McCaig, owner of Bridge of Allan boutique, Ruban Rouge, which has been offering customers a taste of continental style since September 2011. Chloé personally travels to Paris and London twice a year to select the best of French, Italian and Belgian brands for the Ruban Rouge rails and makes it her mission to find items with that “Je ne sais quoi”, something that you just cannot find anywhere else. Italian Brands such as Iblues, Penny Black and NIU, and acclaimed Belgium brand Nathalie Vleeschouwer, offer smart/casual options, while other labels such as Nissa tick all the boxes for an elegant outfit for special occasions. all me cynical but I’ve never been convinced by wraps. Sure you lose inches in the salon but as soon as you rehydrate those lost water inches are back. But the Minimi Wrap at Revival Retreat offers immediate results that last up to three days. Therapist Lindsay started by taking detailed measurements before applying the geranium, black pepper and hydrolysed lecithin oil (the magic ingredient) all over and then encased me in cling film. I then had 50 minutes to cook in a warm bed whilst receiving a complimentary Dermalogica facial. Next came the moment of truth and, unwrapped and re-measured, I had lost five inches all over. My skin was also silky soft and looked visibly more toned. Over the next couple of days I lost yet another inch from my thighs. Quite a result from an hour spent snoozing under a heated duvet. I-ON HOMES

So who lives in a home like this? Well, if you were one of the thousands registering an interest it could soon be you.

D

almarnock is not somewhere you would instantly associate with cutting edge design, innovative and eco-friendly homes. But, thanks entirely to the 2014 Commonwealth Games being held in the city later this summer, this is exactly what you will find in the custom built Athletes’ Village in the newly regenerated East End. Although the athletes, including household names such as Tom Daley and Mark Cavendish, will be taking up residency there for the duration of The Games, 300 of the one, two, three and four bedroom homes - in a range of apartments, terrace and townhouses - will be available to buyers after the competitors have packed up their medals and moved on to their next sporting glory. Located just three miles from the city centre, The Village has been built by City Legacy, a consortium of Glasgow companies McTaggart & Mickel, CCG and WH Malcolm, all

with a strong track record of residential development in the city and sits within one of the most significant new urban regenerations in the UK, with the ÂŁ150 million investment including the magnificent new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the world-class Emirates Arena and the refurbishment of Dalmarnock train station. Over 2,000 people have already registered their interest in these high spec, sustainable homes which boast superior energy efficient heating systems and insulated features as well as solar panelling.

The spacious designs, including The Silver Fern, The Thistle and The Hibiscus - named after the national flowers of the competing nations in The Games - boast floor-to-ceiling living room windows and there is a real focus on letting as much natural light into the property as possible. The design is certainly effective especially within the open plan kitchen and living areas in the two, three and four bedroom houses which all feature large double aspect windows in the living room and glass double doors in the kichen to the rear of the property.

50 | PROPERTY AND INTERIORS

The homes have been designed with a real focus on family, with spacious rooms and facilities to suit the needs of any growing brood. The bedrooms offer built in wardrobes, as generous en suite facilities and large family bathrooms, complete with luxury standard Porcelanosa tiles. The homes can be purchased under the Governmentbacked scheme, Help to Buy (Scotland) which allows buyers to own a home with only a five per cent deposit, and the pricing is as sporting as the nearby surroundings. One bedroom apartments start around £75,000 while the large four bedroom detached homes come in at around £200,000. A few minutes’ walk from the recently refurbished Dalmarnock train station, the development is also located next to the new M74 extension, an attractive consideration for commuters who don’t have Sir Chris Hoy’s enthusiasm for pedal power.

The art of Taxidermy Words: Jessica Lindsay

F

ar from mad professors’ favourite home decoration, taxidermy pieces are becoming the new coveted items for fashionable homes. The artisan trade has shaken off its stale image in favour of something newer and wholly more chic. In fact, taxidermy epitomises all that is “Britishness.” It evokes country lodges with roaring fires and something luxurious and ostentatious that unlocks the door to the Lord or Lady of the Manor inside all of us. One of the most well known names in UK taxidermy is George Jamieson who creates bespoke works of from the idyllic country setting of Cramond Tower in Edinburgh. “Taxidermy is the most basic form of art,” explains George. “It gives people a connection to the real world. The art side of taxidermy is really picking up and I think this is because the younger generation doesn’t often see that wild side of the world.” His sample work is simply stunning. The furs and feathers are beautifully kept and the poses are tasteful and realistic. Yet George prefers to see himself as an artist rather than

a businessman and only works on commissioned pieces. However, he does hold training days for £225 which will explain and take you through the whole taxidermy process, with a small bird to take away with you as a keepsake. One of the reasons for the original decline in interest for such products lays with concerns from animal rights activists. Previously animals which were stuffed may have been sourced from hunting trips and killed for this sole purpose – some illegally. Thankfully nowadays there are very strict probate rules around the craft and especially on the sourcing of animals, with any animal used having to have passed away of natural causes. As a result taxidermy is back in demand, and it looks great in the modern home. Interior designer Marc Bush agrees. “The trend fuses Victoriana with vintage to produce a look that can either be hard edged and masculine or quirky and feminine, making it one of the strongest crossover trends in years. We have seen the development of this trend from delicate birds to owls and now toadstools and taxidermy breathe new life into this look.”

DINNER @ BLACK RABBIT

I

f you’ve been chasing white rabbits in the search of food with a guaranteed Eat Me written all over it, give up and instead seek out Black Rabbit on Great Western Road to experience a culinary treat that will leave you smiling wider than Wonderland’s Cheshire Cat. This small but perfectly formed neighbourhood bar is one of Glasgow’s hidden gems, and I reckon it has some of the friendliest bar staff in the city. From a tiny open kitchen, they offer an extensive menu comprising of meatballs, deli style sandwiches, pizzas, salads and burgers. The menu peppered with humour states that their breads are freshly baked in a local bakehouse and their meats are supplied by a butcher on Byres Road. The care and attention shown in sourcing the produce certainly reflect in the quality of the food. To kick off we shared a portion of chicken wings, £4.95, which, on our visit, came with a

choice of Piri Piri or barbeque sauce. Our waitress advised the Piri Piri was spicy hot so we opted for the barbeque. All finger lickin’ good. Watching the burgers emerge from the kitchen, neither of us could resist and I chose the Especial, £6.95, and my dining companion thought he’d keep with the rabbit theme and go for the Mad Hatter, £9.95. The Especial, exclusive to Black Rabbit, is a lamb & chorizo burger topped with chorizo slices. All burgers are served in a freshly baked brioche bun with salad, pickles, mayonnaise and the Black Rabbit signature sauce. This was more than a little bit special and every mouthful was packed with flavour. The extra chorizo slices added a spicy kick and I polished off the lot along with the accompanying basket of crunchy skinny fries. The Mad Hatter Burger is a meat lover’s feast. A cheeseburger stacked with Pulled Pork and

Smoked Beef Brisket. This was a huge hit with my friend who has the appetite of Scooby Doo. The flavours worked really well together and the smokiness of the brisket added a new dimension. The menu at Black Rabbit is great value, especially the two for one pizza deal, with the cheapest being free - except on Tuesdays when they offer an amazing three for one deal. The drinks menu is a carefully thought out selection of beers and wines and if you’re feeling like something a little more exotic then they can rustle up a selection of classic cocktails from £5. At present, there’s no dessert on offer here but our waitress was kind enough to treat us to a taster of a rich, indulgent, chocolate brownie that they’re planning to add to the menu. Hopefully very soon as I won’t be leaving it as long as Alice to return to this little wonderland.

CHEERS TO THE EMERALD ISLE St Patrick’s Day on 17 March is one of the most popular celebrations in the world, but how much do you really know about Paddy? Despite its boozy reputation, Irish law declared St Patrick’s a day of religious observance and outlawed alcohol up until 1970. Then it was reclassified as national holiday, letting the Guinness flow freely again. On an average day, 5.5 million pints of the black stuff are sold but on the 17th that rockets to a remarkable 13 million pints worldwide. In America, more than 40 tons of green dye are poured into the Chicago River as part of the celebrations.

Our Favourite Find This month’s find is a treasure trove of the coolest and quirkiest products imaginable. Firebox, run by a team of pop culture aficionados with their tongues firmly pressed into their cheeks, has a catalogue featuring (deep breath) Blade Runner whisky glasses, Tetris stackable lamps, Patrick Bateman business cards, Breaking Bad crystal meth bath salts, the world’s largest Snickers bar and a Ryan Gosling colouring-in book. Phew! Check it out online at www.firebox.com

However Paddy’s original colour was blue and the Irish Guards regiment still sport a blue plume in their bearskins. The emphasis on green is linked to Irish independence. According to legend, on the day of judgement while Christ judges all other people, St Patrick will judge the Irish. The ‘snakes’ Patrick drove out of Ireland are now understood to have been pagans, rather than actual reptiles. He used the three-leaf clover to explain the Christian holy trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Finally, the odds of finding a four-leaf clover are nearly one in 10,000.
