i-on Glasgow this month Spring’s traditionally the time we take a look around our homes, realise the coffee table hasn’t seen a duster since Christmas and then, full of shame, polish the living daylights out of the place. But if your pad’s in need of more than simply a thorough spring clean, this issue is fit to burst with great interiors inspiration. Looking to invest in some contemporary Scottish design? Our Caledonian Cool feature on page 28 has all the up and coming designer names you need to know. We also discover you needn’t leave your armchair when planning your next decorating move in Design.com on page 40 as well as i-on’s regular look at the city’s property and interiors news. If furniture’s not your bag but all things fashion are, you’ll love this issue’s competition which offers one winner, and a friend, a shopping spree at glossy accessories specialist Folli Follie plus a night at the chic Blythswood Square hotel and spa. Our last competition was won by A. McEachen, who we’re sure will enjoy that overnight stay and whisky experience at the historic Dornoch Castle. Until next month, enjoy i-on.

MY I-ON GLASGOW

Anne Ledgerwood photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Most women will admit to a love of shopping but for Anne Ledgerwood it’s an obsession – albeit a professional one. For as general manager of the St. Enoch Centre - the first of its kind in the city when it opened in 25 years ago - Anne’s on a mission to ensure the centre doesn’t rest on its laurels by continuing to attract new retailers and eateries such as Hotel Chocolat, Superdry and Nando’s, all in the aim of satisfying the centre’s 19 million visitors each year. Your preferred area in Glasgow? Merchant City - I love the buzz and the variety, and it is small enough to get around by foot. The city’s best kept secret? The Britannia Panopticon near The Tron Theatre, which is the oldest surviving music hall in the world. Anything the city could do better? I would love to see the river as the heart of the city again. When St. Enoch Centre opened in 1989 Glasgow had just hosted the Garden Festival and there was a great buzz about the Clyde. But its potential to become an asset in its own right hasn’t been fully exploited. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? Kimbles. The amazing cakes are the perfect pick me up. Explode a myth about Glasgow? That the food’s better in Edinburgh. Have the critics ever been to Crabshakk or Brian Maule?

BEAUTY

Taylor Ferguson photo ∙ Andy Barr

Hair is the lifelong passion of Taylor Ferguson, head of Taylor Ferguson Hair and Beauty in the city centre. Taylor trained in London and Paris before returning north to set up his eponymous business - the Bath Street salon recently celebrated its 38th anniversary – and is one of Scotland’s most trusted and respected stylists. What are your top hair essentials? A first-class professional cut can make a huge difference to someone’s appearance. And the correct shampoo, bespoke to your needs, is probably the most important ingredient in ensuring your hair ‘behaves’ between cuts. Best new product you’ve recently tried? Kerastase Densifique Hair Density Programme from L’Oreal which, by using the regenerating power of stem cells, has the potential to reveal up to 1,700 new hairs in three months. What’s your hero haircare product? My current one is Schwarzkopf Osis+ Volume Up booster spray which give great results when sprayed on the roots. Who is your go-to beauty expert in the city? I work alongside Leanne Donovan, our chief beauty therapist, and what she doesn’t know about beauty treatments isn’t worth knowing. Favourite salon treatment? The Germaine De Capuccini Black Diamond Facial for combating the effects of the hours I spend outside gardening and playing football with my five-year-old grandson.

DESIGN

Katherine Hergarty photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As store manager of French modern furniture specialist Ligne Roset’s only Scottish stand-alone store in Edinburgh’s Jeffrey Street, Katherine Hegarty is well versed in adding ‘je ne sais quoi’ to her clients’ homes. But what about her own? Here she gives us a brief glimpse of the home she shares with her partner Darran, their three-year-old daughter Alex and a Jack Russell puppy called Nora. What’s your favourite room in your home? My living room. It’s huge for a flat at 3.5m by 5m and has a massive 8ft wide south facing window and a smaller one to the east so if there’s sunshine to be had, we catch it. If money was no object, how would you furnish a home? The first thing I’d do is custom-design a computer/gaming chair for my other half – everything that functions the way he wants is really ugly. Then, I think I’d have lots of cleverly-designed pieces to make the most of the space – even if I had all the space in the world, I still want my furniture to work hard. What would be your top interiors tip? Get your storage right. It’s fun to spend on a new sofa or wallpaper because things look different instantly, but the right type of storage is worth its weight in gold. What makes a house a home? Laughter, mess, friends, family and pets. Who would be your dream house guest? An early-rising compulsive cleaner who likes making breakfast for three-year-olds and loves walking puppies.

PROPERTY Steven Lucas photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Steven Lucas is the sales partner at Letting and Estate Agency Vanilla Square. While he and co-founders Innes Allan and Joanne Mories are used to helping clients with their next property move, they recently went through a relocation themselves moving from Minerva Street to their new home in Hyndland Road. Where do you live? Since having a baby, we have moved to a modern detached villa in Kilmacolm, where I grew up. We wanted a big garden for our son, and family support nearby - it makes babysitting very easy. What do you look for in a property? Over time your motivations change significantly. I now consider my family before anything else. The investment side is always in the back of your head, but if you love a property and you intend to stay for the foreseeable future, you have to just pay what you need to secure it - within reason. Would you stretch your finances to afford a mortgage? As long as there was a cushion for unexpected interest rate hikes, surprise bills and any other associated costs. Plus I would always make sure we had enough to enjoy life. You can’t pile everything into a home and have nothing left. Glasgow’s property hotspot? Finnieston is a phenomenal place to live now. Argyle Street is a trendy hub full of cool bars and restaurants and The Hydro is on the doorstep too. It provides great value for money and is becoming increasingly popular.

GABRIELLA CILMI words ∙ David Pollock

L

ast year’s third album The Sting didn’t do well at the box office, especially not by the standards of her gold certified 2008 top ten debut Lessons to Be Learned, but Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi is an artist who deserves some support nonetheless. The Sting was a record which could have been compared with the best of its competition (it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Jessie J performing some of the more tough edged and strong willed tracks like Highway and Left With Someone Else, for example), yet which undoubtedly faltered with a lack of major label support. More than that, it emerged amid suggestions from Cilmi that her former label had advised her to play upon her sexuality more than she would have wished, with this album’s demure but confident black and white sleeve now featuring her clothed and pointedly shrouded beneath a

black veil. Of course, the devil’s advocate might suggest that Cilmi could have been suffering an attack of sour grapes following the end of her former deal, but the condition and demands of the music industry for young women entering the business at the pop end of the scale tells us what she reports isn’t too far-fetched. To put it in perspective, Cilmi’s experience and profile tell us she’s a veteran of the scene who’s been around for a while, yet she’s still only 22. She was spotted by a music executive performing in the streets of her home city when she was 12 and a bidding war saw her signed up in her early teens. She moved to London with her parents and brother shortly afterwards, even as her debut album Lessons to Be Learned was being written – recorded by Girls Aloud producers Xenomania, her big international hit Sweet About

Me was released in 2008, when she was 16-years-old. It went to number one in her home country and was named by PRS for Music as the UK’s most-played song of 2009, with the album also doing well. Yet it would be her only major hit single, unless you count the reasonable top 10 showing of On a Mission, the first track from the 2010 follow up Ten. Which means at this point in time it’s tempting to think of Cilmi as a one hit wonder, criminal though that seems given her age and obvious determination to get back on track. Produced by Eliot James (Kaiser Chiefs, Noah and the Whale, Two Door Cinema Club), The Sting is an album which expresses regret and separation anxiety well, even if there are no clear-cut pop thrills to be found therein. What it does do in style, however, is to showcase once more Cilmi’s distinctive, husky vocal, a stunning instrument which sounds like it should belong to a much older woman – although not necessarily a more experienced one. Gabriella Cilmi plays King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on Tuesday 27 May.

n the world of interiors, it’s very cool to be Celtic right now. The writing was on the wall, or more precisely catwalk, when Karl Lagerfeld paid homage to all things tartan in his Chanel Metiers d’Art show last year. And where fashion goes, décor inevitably follows. But it’s not just twists on tartans and new-wave plaids that are going strong. As the hunger for heritage stories and craftmanship grows, everything from traditionally made furniture to luxe lace are making a splash, at home and abroad. Whilst honesty and integrity continue to make up the DNA of Scottish design, a new generation of designer-makers are keeping things fresh. “The hallmarks of Scottish design lie in the materials and the way they are used,” says Rosie Brown of Papa Stour (www.papastour.com). “Cashmere, tweed, leather, horn and even stones are given a modern twist by our craftsmen. Locality and tradition are now being revived by designers in a contemporary way.” One such designer is Glasgow-based textile specialist Gillian Kyle. Her work is a celebration of Scottish popular culture, with a focus on iconic Scottish brands used in a quirky way. Combining original, hand-drawn illustration with well-made, high quality products, the company has grown steadily over the last few years and Gillian Kyle products are now stocked in John Lewis and Liberty. The company recently launched a new website (www.gilliankyle.com) making it even easier to shop ‘Scottish’ and snap up Gillian’s Tunnock’s Tea Cake cushions and Mothers Pride baby bibs along with the ‘Local Heroes’ range, a collaboration with young illustrator Clare Forrest. With a total turnover last year of £950 million, when it comes to the nation’s textiles industry – a sector in which Scotland is seen as the pinnacle of quality - business is certainly booming. “Textiles from Scotland are sought worldwide and are bought in over 150 countries – and Scottish textiles feature everywhere from The White House to Sydney Opera House,” explains Cathy Black, head of textiles at Scottish Enterprise. With 2014 the Year of Homecoming, the profile of homegrown talent is set for another boost with a number of other events shining the spotlight on Scottish talent. “With the Commonwealth Games, The Ryder Cup and the referendum happening in 2014, Scotland and its talents are never going to be far from the news,” says Rosie. So, with all eyes focussed on us this year, we take a look at who is selling Scotland in style here and abroad.

“E

clectic, minimalist in places and fresh,” that’s PDS Media’s Peter Samson’s take on his modern West End apartment. While we wouldn’t disagree, we think the PR and social media guru should add stylish, sleek and undeniably cool to that list too. Having previously lived in the heart of the city in a penthouse apartment with incredible views from its roof terrace, Peter didn’t want to compromise his lifestyle needs with his next purchase – a short drive to the airport, a brief walk to a station and a minute’s stroll to a selection of good restaurants. The West End ticked all those boxes, but the numerous properties he viewed all fell short until he spotted a homebuilder’s advert featuring a future development. “The builder had traditionally focused on large family homes, so I was intrigued that their focus with the new development

LIVING ROOM I love my side tables in the sitting room. They're white with glass tops that swivel to reveal a handy storage space. They've had lots of admiring comments and whenever I reveal their origin is IKEA the response is always the same: "You're joking?" TELEPHONE TABLE If there's a theme to the apartment I reckon it's gentle of the eyes with a dash of eclecticism.

was on flats. I knew they had high standards of finish so I’d almost made up my mind that I’d buy even before I viewed.” Peter bought the property off plan and it’s a purchase process he’d definitely do again as by working directly with the builder he was able to put his personal stamp on the property before it was completed, with a little help from his friends, television’s most dynamic interiors duo, Colin and Justin. “The boys came with me to visit the place when it was still a building site. They helped to identify structural changes that could be made at the planning stages including moving a few walls, changing electrical layouts and advising on kitchen spec. “Their ideas made sense and I was happy they could be done before moving in. Their appearance on site caused quite a stir among the builders who clearly thought a TV crew was about to emerge too.” The six month lead time to his entry date gave Peter time to plan where everything would be in the new layout.

“I particularly wanted to create a purpose built home office so I had a good working environment and wanted everything to appear very pristine so requested that the décor be plain white.” The result is a cool, urban bachelor flat with a gentle Scandinavian feel to it, which is hardly surprising given that Peter acted as PR consultant for Swedish interior giant IKEA for almost a decade. “I always loved IKEA’s take on small-space living and maximising functionality in a home. This current home is without question my most functional living space and I just love every aspect of its layout as well as the contents.” While Peter’s love of white is evident throughout, one thing the property is devoid of is clutter, with surfaces cleared and all objects earning their right to residency on whether they have function or are aesthetically pleasing. That’s not to say the apartment lacks personality, far from it as Peter’s ‘Wally dugs’ and impressive art collection demonstrate. “I love art and am particularly keen on Scots

LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN Friends have suggested it has a Scandinavian feel to it - I've opted for a lot of white with a white leather sofa and chair, side tables, the kitchen and the paintwork.

artists including Gerard Burns and Alexandra Gardner. I buy paintings because I like them and rather than in the context of investing.” With friends and clients, including one of Scotland’s most trusted interior design companies Chelsea Mclaine, involved in interiors, home design is always on Peter’s agenda. So is he continually tempted to make changes? “It may sound like a cliché but I am genuinely extremely happy as it stands. I may change the kitchen worktops at some point and I may introduce some vivid wallpapers. But then again, I may do nothing and just continue enjoying living here.”

T

he era of digital decorating is upon us. Today, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram – and a bevvy of design blogs – allow us to scour the globe without having to leave our sofas. They grant us access to the world’s best designers and the most beautiful rooms. It has also transformed the way we shop, making everything from the high-end to the secondhand more accessible and instantly available. Take the humble mood board. The starting point for any decorating project now seems antiquated in the face of

the emergent force that is Pinterest. With 20 million new visitors every month, this visual viewing platform offers up thousands of images to feast on. All you have to do is browse, be inspired and pinch the ones you want for your own virtual pinboard. “Pinterest has had a huge influence on the internet-savvy decorator - it makes it so easy to discover and follow trends,” says interiors blogger Alison Gibb whose blog, Her Indoors, (www.her-indoors.com), attracts 30,000 hits a month.

THE STARTING POINT FOR ANY DECORATING PROJECT NOW SEEMS ANTIQUATED IN THE FACE OF THE EMERGENT FORCE THAT IS PINTEREST

“I’ve created a board for everything from 'Dining Inspiration' to 'The Bedroom'. When you allow yourself to pin freely, it is amazing how quickly a 'look' emerges and a theme comes together.” Houzz is another board-based site that focusses on home design. This online design community serves up more than two million images and over 1.5 million products – handpicked by experts – alongside chatboards and tutorials for advice. In short, it’s heaven for the homeowner in the midst of a renovation project, but more than that, it’s been touted as a prime example of how the design knowledge, previously locked away inside the brains of the professionals, can be digitalised and digested by all. Whilst bigger companies like IKEA have their own social sites with free apps allowing you to test out alternative looks on your home, over on Facebook and Twitter, hundreds of professional designers are offering free advice to their followers. The best part? These sites are interactive so you

can ask the designers any question you want – and be first in line for competitions or discounts. The rise in digital voyeurism has, unsurprisingly, produced a whole raft of interior exhibitionists and while some should have kept their curtains closed, there are some excellent real home inspiration blogs out there. One of the best being very close to home - Ollie & Seb’s Haus (www.ollieandsebshaus. co.uk), created by Glasgow mum of two Deborah Gordon. The beautifully simple blog features stunning interior project’s Deborah has taken on in her own home along with some of the designers and interiors she is inspired by. Undoubtedly one of the best things about our social media addiction is the democratisation of design. By using these channels for self-promotion, we’re also being exposed to more designer-makers than ever before. “Inspiration is the decorator’s spur,” says Alison from Her Indoors. “It is what motivates us and social media is full of it which can only be a good thing for us and our living rooms.”

DINNER @ JAMES MILLER ROOM words ∙ Susie Bruce

W

hen I think Turnberry, I think golf. So when my husband informed me that for our first wedding anniversary he had booked the resort’s James Miller Room for dinner I smelt a rat. You see, I have zero interest in whacking small white balls around vast green spaces but my husband, he’s a different story. Plays off 9 apparently, whatever that means. So it was a very welcome surprise that the only bag my husband retrieved from the car on arrival was of the overnight and not golf variety. Situated just before the main dining area of 1906 and named after the architect who designed Turnberry, the

James Miler Room is exactly that - a room. Compact and bijoux, it seats a maximum of ten diners making it perfect for intimate, special occasions like ours. The menu at JMR costs £75 for four courses, with the description of the options for each course kept to the bare minimum – all of which adds to the intrigue and anticipation of what is to come. Hearing us deliberate on wine, AmberMarie, our attentive but unobtrusive waitress, offered the services of the sommelier, who pointed us in the direction of the £45 Malbec rather than the £48 Rioja. A great choice it was too.

DINNER | 61 Although tempted to start with the duck egg and truffle custard, I was curious on the marriage of rich foie gras with indulgent Valrhona chocolate. This dish really shouldn’t work yet it does, with the slight bitterness of the chocolate adding a kick to the creamy fullness of the foie gras; the accompanying cherries offer just the right level of tartness to cleanly cut through both. My husband’s starter of veal sweetbreads and langoustine was so beautifully plated he didn’t know whether to eat it or paint it. Eat it he did, and said the langoustines were the best he had had to date. Praise indeed. My piscine experience came on my second course and confirmed turbot as the king of fish when two meaty fillets arrived elegantly dressed with a generous sprinkling of parsley root and mushroom granola and another of my favourite indulgences, truffle. Delicious. My husband chose the tasting of lamb, which featured a number of cuts including tongue – not a favourite texture

I SUGGESTED WE SHOULD RETURN AGAIN FOR OUR SECOND ANNIVERSARY BUT MY HUSBAND DECLARED WE’D BE BACK SOONER THAN THAT of his but one I was only too happy to take off his fork. The rest of his dish disappeared faster than a Guinness on Paddy’s Day. Next up was the Scottish artisan cheese course featuring a truffled Morangie Brie – just enough to savour but not enough to dampen our enthusiasm for dessert. With the cheese cleared, we were invited to visit the kitchen and it was a privilege to see ‘The Pass’ and chefs, led by executive chef Manur Kara, in action. Plus we got a pre-dessert serving of a honey ice-cream which made the visit even sweeter. Dessert then beckoned; a light as air Valrhona chocolate, raspberry and saffron delight for me and a very elegant pineapple confection in the form of a clever sugar ‘glass’, which, when smashed with a spoon, released an umptious coconut, rum and lime cream for him. Over coffee I suggested we should return again for our second anniversary but my husband declared we’d be back sooner than that and again, sans golf clubs. That’s simply because as a fine dining experience, Turnberry’s James Miller Room most certainly makes the cut. TAKE THREE

When PETA hailed Glasgow as the most vegan friendly city in the UK, it raised a few eyebrows – ours included. But it seems the animal activists were on the ball, at least if these three animal free eateries are anything to go by.

The 78, photo by Susie Lowe

The 78 The 78 has been serving up a completely vegan menu and drinks list since opening seven years ago and does what it does very well. Expect an unhurried, easy atmosphere and a roaring fire on chilly days. Good for… hearty appetites as portions are huge. Expect to pay… £6.75 for a classic 78 veggie burger with chips and £5.15 for coconut and bean chilli nachos. Anything else? The Flying Duck, photos by Susie Lowe

The Flying Duck Small but perfectly formed is our opinion of The Flying Duck menu. 100 per cent vegan, it’s fantastic value with food served until 10pm. The staff are young, friendly and you’re guaranteed service with a bit of banter as well as a smile. Good for… fast food fans looking for a tasty but cheap treat. Expect to pay… £1.50 for a veggie Hot Dog, £4 for a burger. Students get 20 per cent off food on Thursdays and 10 per cent off every other day. Anything else? The Flying Duck is one of the coolest bars in the city and home to club nights like Lock Up Your Daughters and The Freakbeats Club. 142 Renfield St, G2 3AU, Tel: 0141 564 1450.

Mix fresh and raw made to order sushi with a big tossed summer salad bowl. Choose a spicy Mai Thai king prawn salad or a juicy Mango salad with a soya and sesame dressing topped with toasted crushed nuts. Bound to make your mouth water. Book your table, call 0141 357 3033

GUILT-FREE DOUGHNUTS Unfortunately scientists have not come up with a calorie free version of the deep fried delight but you could be doing your bit for charity by indulging in the tasty treat this May. National Doughnut Week takes place between 10-17 May and whether you go for sugar, chocolate or fudge topped, filled with jam or custard, as long as you buy your doughnuts from participating bakeries, money is donated to The Children’s Trust. Just make sure you remember to share them around the office…

On Your Marks With the biggest women’s 10k run taking place in Glasgow this May, it may have inspired you to get your trainers on to take to the streets. Here are just some of the benefits of running for women. It’s free. Just make sure you invest in good fitting trainers and a sports bra. As with any form of exercise, running releases the feelgood endorphins boosting your mood. The time you spend running helps you think clearer and releases tension. The chemicals released when you’re running help to boost circulation making your skin clearer and your features more defined. Running helps you live longer. It lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, lowers blood pressure and boosts your immunity to colds and viruses.

get happy With Pharrell Williams in town for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in May, just how easy is it to be as Happy as Pharrell? According to scientific research, it’s as easy as wearing bright colours, learning to play an instrument, buying an unexpected gift for someone, or listening to music and dancing. So why not try them all? After all, you can’t overdose on happiness.
