i-on Glasgow this month This issue has been inspired by, you guessed it, the Commonwealth Games and inside you’ll find all you need to know about the history and provenance of the Games on page 30, a schedule on what, when and where they are happening on page 34, Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson shares his personal style with us (p20) and there’s even a sports inspired fashion spread on page 36 – although these looks are most definitely street rather than track attire. But for those looking to avoid rather than indulge in all things Commonwealth, there’s i-on’s usual mix of Glasgow greats including our food and restaurant reviews, fashion news for him and her, along with all the non Games related goings-on in our Eye on the City pages starting on page 10. One last word on a sports theme though; our competition prize is a year’s membership at one of Nuffield Health’s Glasgow health and wellbeing centres. Find out how to enter on page 08. A big congratulations also to the winner of our last competition, Sandra Kelly, who won a £500 spending spree at Folli Follie. Until next time, enjoy i-on.

TALKING ABOUT

Tax-free shopping

I’ve heard a little about this tax-free shopping. What’s it all about? When you shop in the UK, you pay VAT, which is essentially a sales tax on most goods. If you are a non-EU resident visiting the UK you are entitled to claim a VAT refund on most goods that you buy and take home.

And I could save 20% on everything bought? You can claim a VAT refund on most goods with the exception of books and children’s clothing and business expenses.

Great, I buy things all the time. How do I get money back then? You, my dear, don’t. As I said, you need to be a non-EU resident to claim the VAT back.

Bet it’s a hassle to get the money back though. You just need to ask for a tax-free form in store when paying for your goods, fill it out and then get it stamped by customs when you leave the country and post the form back using the pre-paid envelope.

Oh. What about when I go on holiday? You won’t be able to claim money back for things that you buy in the EU but keep it in mind if you are travelling outwith Europe. Innova Group and Premier Tax Free Shopping currently operate throughout Europe (for non-EU nationals) and many international markets including Asia, South America, The Middle East and Russia. So, if you’re planning on going outwith Europe, don’t forget to claim the sales tax back on the things you buy before you head home. If I were a non-EU resident - how much could I save? The current sales tax is 20% and you could claim this back on goods that you buy whilst in the UK.

How do I find out who offers tax-free shopping? Simply look out for signs in shops offering tax free shopping.

Is there a long wait for the money back? Nope, some airports and inland border checkpoints even offer cash refunds. Just look out for the desk or check the relevant tax free shopping website for the nearest cash refund location. This means even more shopping then, right? Well, since you’re saving 20% on most goods it would be rude not to, wouldn’t it?

MY I-ON GLASGOW Sarah Raffel photo ∙ Susie Lowe

MY I-ON GLASGOW | 19

Sarah Raffel established Brazen Studios in 2004 with the intention to showcase new designer makers and offer a bespoke design service by way of Brazen’s on-site jewellery studios. A decade on, the Glasgow School of Art graduate is an multi-award winning designer and her Merchant City store a magnet for jewellery lovers looking for something unique or just a little bit different. Where is your preferred area in Glasgow? The Merchant City is such an interesting part of Glasgow and yet to reach its full potential. I love the feel of the area and my neighbours. Is there anything that would place Glasgow more firmly on the map? I think we could make more of the riverside. Given its history, it is a little neglected when you compare it to the riverside of other great cities. Where would you take visitors to show them the real Glasgow? The Barrowlands for a great gig. If you could change one thing about the city what would it be? The M8 motorway slicing through the centre. Explode a myth about Glasgow? Its unjust label as a hard and fierce city. I have always found the people of Glasgow to be warm, friendly and very welcoming. What would be your perfect night out? A bottle of Cava in Brutti Compadres followed by cocktails in Rogano and a night of dancing at monthly club night Hot Mess at SWG3.

Around the city - Where you’ll find me:

Dining out: For something quick, Ichiban. Enjoying a coffee: Tibo in Dennistoun. Lunch with friends: Brutti Compadres at Virginia Court. Pamper session: Peaches Wax and Beauty Bar. Favourite shop: Niche Optical Tailor.

STYLE

Michael Jamieson photo ∙ Marc Sethi

Men sporting tight swimming trunks in public aren’t normally renowned for their style however we are more than willing to make an exception for the Scottish Olympic silver medal winning swimmer Michael Jamieson who talks us through his out-of-the-pool style. I’d describe my style as… Individual. I seem to have two different wardrobes; one full of training wear and another with smart casual clothes. When it comes to fashion I’m a bit… Fussy. I quite like searching for new clothing concepts and items somewhere between streetwear and high fashion. My favourite recent find was… A tartan T-shirt from houseoftreli.com - a great site for something a bit different. My favourite designer is… I’m an ambassador for Tom Morris, a recently revamped Scottish label based in St. Andrews. I love working with these guys and their clothing is excellent. I’ve got a thing about… Round neck jumpers with a statement graphic. If money were no object on the fashion front I’d buy… Most of the Nike footwear releases, I love trainers. My big fashion no-no is… Guys wearing 3/4 length trousers. I can’t get my head around it.

PROPERTY

Marc Taylor photo ∙ Susie Lowe

When Marc Taylor founded Tay Letting in 2009, he had a very simple concept – excellence in everything. Tay Letting is now one of the city’s most dynamic letting and property management companies. What do you look for in a property? I have a very broad love for property. Ironically, I would look for an open plan kitchen, living, dining area yet my flat at Lauderdale Gardens has a separate dining kitchen. Parking is also important; I would hate the thought of parking two streets away from my front door. Have you always bought as a home or an asset? I always buy a property as an asset/investment. However I have recently refurbished my property and my attitude was slightly different. I wanted to make it perfect. Where in your opinion is the most overvalued area in Glasgow? I don’t think any area in Glasgow is overvalued. Rentals in the Park area are very high but so are the purchase prices. I think Glasgow property represents great value all round. And following on, the most undervalued? Partickhill is starting to receive the recognition it deserves. G11 in general is a tremendous area and is right in the hub of the action. Any tips for renters? The rental market is extremely buoyant and properties rent quickly so tenants have a finite amount of time to decide on a property. If a tenant thinks a flat is right for them and they can afford it, go for it.

DESIGN

Duncan Heeles photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Duncan Heeles is the director of BAGNODESIGN Glasgow, the first BAGNODESIGN showroom in the UK. The Napier University graduate has worked in the kitchen and bathroom industry for the last nine years and is known for his rich and opulent spaces, no matter what the budget may be. He lives in Greenock in a waterfront home. What’s your favourite room in your home? The main living room. It has high ceilings with detailed cornice work and original parquet flooring. I love the open fire to bring a real sense of warmth when the weather is bad, and views along the River Clyde also help. Describe your personal taste? I adore dark, opulent rooms that consist of traditional features with a modern twist. I like to think of my home as a ‘deep and rich boutique hotel’. I am used to designing in this style, so it is hard not to channel it back into my own home. Adding a chandelier along with the right art pieces really adds to this design aesthetic. If money was no object, how would you furnish a home? I would create a cinema in my home. After a long day of work, I would love to just kick off my shoes and break out a bucket of popcorn. Once that projector screen scrolls down, let The Godfather marathon begin.

NATIONAL words ∙ David Pollock

MUSIC | 29

A

week into July, many Scottish music fans might find themselves deciding whether or not T in the Park really is the biggest draw of the moment in the country. The good news is that timings will still allow them to attend Scotland’s largest music festival and the much anticipated appearance of The National the night before at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall. Having missed out a trip north of the border on last year’s visit to the UK, this will be their first appearance on a Scottish stage since August 2011. What this means is it will be the first time the hugely successful American alternative rock group have played material from last year’s latest album Trouble Will Find Me in Scotland, and it’s long overdue. A result of singer Matt Berninger and guitarist Scott Devendorf’s collaboration in the group Nancy in 1991 while they were students at the University of Cincinnati, The National are one of those groups who have trodden a slow uphill path to great success, kind of like an American equivalent of Elbow. The band as they are now came together in Brooklyn, New York in 1999, with Berninger and Devendorf jettisoning their previous bandmates for the latter’s brother Bryan and his sometime collaborators Aaron and Bryce Dessner, leaving Berninger as the band’s only non-sibling. In their early days the group would play the club venues of New York while in some cases working for companies involved in the dot.com boom.

ION MAG HP JULY 2014.indd 1

Their first, self-titled album was released in 2001 on the band’s own Brassland label, and attracted a few good notices and a very modest number of sales. Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers in 2003 would repeat the same process, although by now publications like the Chicago Tribune and the UK’s Uncut magazine were picking up on the band’s particularly affecting brand of bleached out and emotive Americana, meaning bigger sales and a few end of year chart mentions. Alligator followed in 2005, then Boxer in 2007, both to modest success, but it was 2010’s High Violet which would see the long deserved breakthrough come following the band’s appearance on Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign trail. It would go top five in America and Britain, selling over a quarter of a million in the US alone. Now Trouble Will Find Me has propelled them a step further, to their first Grammy nomination this year and an even wider audience. Such success is deserved, because the album – led by Berninger’s charismatic and experience rich vocal – is deeper in emotive storytelling than most releases of recent times. It will be a pleasure to finally welcome them, and to see where they go from here.

The National play the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, on Thursday 10 July.

GAME ON With the countdown on for Glasgow 2014, i-on brings you a beginner’s guide to the Commonwealth Games. words ∙ Michael Clancy

GAME ON | 31

U

nless you’ve been living under a rock for the past seven years you’ll know Glasgow bagged the distinct honour of hosting the 20th Commonwealth Games, the third largest multi-sport event in the world. To say there’s been a lot of hype surrounding the event is a bit of an understatement, but considering it’s set to be the biggest event of its kind the nation has seen, it’s not surprising. Formerly known as the British Empire Games, they Games were first held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930 as a smaller sporting competition for athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. Since then it’s been held every four years - with the exception of 1942 and 1946 when they were cancelled due to the Second World War - and had 18 host cities across seven different countries including Malaysia, New Zealand and Wales. This is the third time Scotland will host, with Edinburgh having held the games in 1970 and 1986. What’s on the schedule From sprinting and diving to boxing and cycling, 6,500 athletes over 71 countries will descend on Glasgow with the hope of bringing home gold for their nation. The action kicks off on 23 July and a total of 17 sports will be on display over the two week period, with several Olympic events

taking place, including the 100 metre sprint, long jump and marathon. As well as track and field events, there will also be numerous sports that are mainly played in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, netball and rugby sevens. Scotland will hope to be able to continue the success they have had in recent years in the world of cycling, with competitions in road racing, track cycling and mountain biking. Team Scotland will also be hoping to build on their successes of 2010 in Delhi, where they won gold in boxing, shooting, swimming and tennis. Where it’s taking place Since 2007, extensive preparation has taken place, with approximately £200 million invested in fitness centres across

Six facts about the Games Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games since 1930; Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Since 1930, Scotland has amassed 355 medals at the games, with 91 gold, 104 silver, and 160 bronze. When Australia hosts the 2018 games in Gold Coast, they will have held the event five times, making them the country to have hosted the event the most. Scotland’s most impressive tally of medals came at the 1986 games in Edinburgh, when they won a total of 33 medals, although their most golden year was in Melbourne in 2006 where they walked away with 11 gold medals. Nauru, a western Pacific island in Micronesia, is the smallest nation to be represented in the games. Having first taken part in 1990, it has appeared at every event since. Shooting proved to be Team Scotland’s strongest event in the 2010 games. They won four gold medals in the men and women’s 50 metre Rifle Prone for single and pairs.

the city to ensure state-of-the-art facilities are offered throughout. 14 venues will be used for the sporting battles during the Games with Hampden Park the main venue for the track and field events. The homes grounds of Rangers and Celtic will also be playing a significant part, with the rugby sevens action at Ibrox. Celtic Park will be the site of the spectacular Opening Ceremony. With an impressive capacity of 7,000, the Emirates Arena at Parkhead will host the badminton; the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the first of its kind in Scotland, will hold the indoor cycling events, and the Tollcross International Swim Centre with its new second 50 metre pool and a seating capacity of 5,000 is the ideal location for all the swimming competitions, with the exclusion of diving events which will take place on the east coast in Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool. Introducing... Replay Laserblast L.I.F.E by

ADVERTORIAL | 45

T

he Replay Laserblast L.I.F.E. capsule collection combines the innovative and eco-friendly Laserblast technology, which dramatically reduces water consumption, and the use of coloured mineral pigments of natural origin. The result? One of the most sustainable denim ranges. To bring to life the eco-credentials of this distinctive range, Replay has cast models with a world-leading ethical stance – the real-life activists transforming the way we live today. These Eco-Warriors for L.I.F.E. all share an irrepressible passion and spirit; they truly embody the attitude of this singular collection and Replay’s rebellious spirit. Norwegian-born model and actress Aleksandra OrbeckNilssen has her own wildlife conservation trust, Nanofasa (www.nanofasa.com), and is a leading spokesperson for African environmental issues around the world. The other protagonist at the heart of this campaign is Enok Groven, the Norwegian founder of Fashion Against Climate Change (www.facebook.com/groups/fashionagainstclimatechange), a well-respected newsgroup focusing on environmental issues with a bearing on the fashion industry. The environmentalists’ spirit of engagement and commitment to environmental action runs through the very DNA of Replay. Throughout its history, the brand has always focused on true design innovation and the Laserblast L.I.F.E. collection is an extension of this unconventional mindset.

Since its first appearance in the seventies, Replay has honoured its heritage and reinterpreted clothing from the past bringing in the latest manufacturing technology. The result of which has given a strong sense of modernity to its signature aesthetic. A leader in denim innovation, Replay attracts consumers who are looking for investment and quality and will largely appeal to the denim purist who recognises the authenticity of garments via small details. The outstanding feature in the new Replay Laserblast L.I.F.E. collection consists in a dyeing process with natural pigments of mineral origin. The pulverized rock imbues the fabric with a distinctive faux vintage appeal thanks to a fine variegation of hues. The two styles for men, the slimfit Anbass and the regular fit Waitom, present a selection of options as to fabric, treatment, wash. For women the skinny Luz and the boy fit Pilar jeans come in three different types of wash. Both the Laserblast L.I.F.E collection and the striking campaign have launched globally and Glasgow shoppers can see them first hand in the Replay concept store appropriately placed on the city’s style mile - where the innovative styling of the collection is mirrored in the cutting edge design and impactful industrial décor of the store. NUTRITIONAL VALUES

BEAUTY NEWS People. Products. Places

“Let food be your medicine” - Hippocrates Long-term health problems - such as fatigue, digestive disorders, IBS and skin conditions - can ruin your quality of life. If you are finding these hard to conquer, you may want to consider nutritional therapy. What is nutritional therapy? Proper nutrition is vital to good health and peak performance. Nutritional therapy seeks to identify key nutritional imbalances which may be contributing to your symptoms. A nutritional therapist is an independent practitioner who will focus on you as an individual and design a personalised nutrition and lifestyle programme to tackle your problem. Typically, a person will see a nutritional therapist 3-4 times as they complete their personalised programme, after which many experience a significant improvement in their symptoms or even a complete resolution to their condition. Where can I do it? Ilona Shannon at Glasgow Nutrition is a qualified and registered nutritional therapist. Face-to-face consultations take place in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. A 90 minute initial consultation is £80. Cost effective treatment packages are also available. To find out more about how nutritional therapy can help you, email glasgow-nutrition@hotmail.com, Tel: 0141 931 5464, Mobile 07970 915 553.

here are many things blissful about Stobo Castle. Amongst them, the fabulous Peebleshire countryside setting, the stunning Japanese Gardens and not least is the Blissful Spa Day which comes in at a very reasonable £109 per person for an eight hour ‘check in’ at this award-wining hotel. With a little piece of downtime topping the agenda, a spa day at Stobo was the perfect escape for my partner and I, and a midweek treat was probably the right way to go to avoid the general busyness associated with weekends. Included in the Blissful package is a back massage, facial, full use of the spa facilities, a three course lunch and optional fitness and aqua classes if you can’t resist. We could, and before our two 25 minute treatments, we spent the day chilling in the hydro spa and enjoying the facilities at our own leisurely pace. So chilled were we that we stayed fully robed for lunch and, although some of our fellow diner were fully clothed, Stobo is laidback enough to feel like anything goes. Lunch was a plentiful affair with a great choice of meat, charcuterie, fish, salads and indulgent desserts, after which we retired to the outside hot tub given that the sun was shining on our visit. Life really is bliss. O

ne look at Colin Lipsey’s West End home and you know this is a man who knows how to make an impact. From his assertive yet well considered accents of colour to his skilled use of textures, Colin clearly knows how to make a room pop. “I’m an event designer so I’m used to making a statement,” explains Colin. Colin’s company Display Works, which he set up with business partner Patrick Canning almost 30 years ago, specialises in retail display and visual merchandising but with interiors a shared passion, the duo recently added a new string to the company’s bow – roomworks.org, which gives clients’ homes a makeover working with the furniture and accessories the client already owns.

LIVING ROOM I think it’s sensible to have basic neutral colours for sofas, carpets and walls to allow other accessories to contrast or tone and to allow you to create calming and relaxing spaces in your home. The sofas are from Sofa Workshop with two sets of covers; black for winter and beige for summer. The living room looks onto a bowling green and gets the sun most of the day so it’s very calm and peaceful. Our favourite piece is a mahogany wall unit left to us by an elderly neighbour. We call it Mrs Gibb after her.

Scottish house prices at a seven year high House prices in Scotland grew by over 7% in the first quarter of 2014 – the strongest rise since 2007 and in Glasgow this represents an increase of 25% over the previous ten years*. The combination of rising house prices, limited availability of new stock and an appetite to move, coupled with our great new location on Hyndland Road, in the heart of the West End has meant that Vanilla Square has been busier than ever. We are seeing over 50% of our properties selling at closing dates, and in the rental market, the average time to reserve a property to let is just four days. So get in touch, because we are confident that we can get you moving fast.

I-ON HOMES | 59

“It’s been inspired by my own experience of having lived in my home for over 30 years and constantly reinventing the look and feel. I’m the original ‘don’t move improve’ advocate,” says Colin. And if the home which he shares with long term partner Mark is an example of the job he’ll do for clients, they’ll be in very experienced hands. “I used to be worse than I am now, changing colours and reorganising things all the time but I’m a bit calmer now and maybe change things every six months or so - not major items, just moving accessories or changing the furniture and pictures around and working with what we have.” As the property is a Victorian conversion, it can’t be structurally altered although over the years it’s enjoyed a number of Colin’s more significant creative makeovers with the kitchen being replaced twice, the bathroom redesigned and a dressing room created from the smaller bedroom upstairs. “We used builders that had been recommended to us for the bathroom and dressing room and fortunately one of our best friends is a kitchen designer so it was

KITCHEN We love eating in our kitchen which we couldn’t really do before as it felt too cramped and small. Since the re fit it feels a lot bigger and much more comfortable.

60 | PROPERTY AND INTERIORS

all pretty straightforward. He had a lot of great ideas about maximising the space, removing a cupboard and lowering the floor to give more height in the kitchen,” says Colin. “The living room also once had a raised platform which split the room by about a third and this was where the dining table was but we got rid of it as it was looking dated.” With a mix of new and inherited furniture, including Sofa Workshops’ seating and a treasured wall unit left to them by an old neighbour along with candlesticks bought in Oslo and vases found in Toronto, the property has a classic but contemporary feel throughout, thanks in part to Colin’s confident use of accent colours. “All our big ticket pieces are in a neutral colour to allow us to change the colour of lamps, cushions, throws, etc. and the walls have similar neutral colours but each space has its own pop of colour. In the living room it’s yellow, the bedroom and kitchen are both lime green, the hall is pink and orange and the shower room is turquoise. It sounds awful when you say it all at once but I think it works. “We also have black sisal flooring throughout which was a major decision as we thought it might make the flat feel smaller but in fact it actually feels bigger now.”

The bedroom, which is one of Colin’s favourite rooms is cool, calm and highly coveted. “It overlooks our back garden with no neighbours to look onto, which is very unusual for the West End. It’s also very calm and decorated in grey and taupe with splashes of lime green from accessories, one of my favourite colours.”

BEDROOM Our comfy bed is from Feather and Black and has been a great investment. We collect accessories from everywhere from abroad to home and shops from Conran and Heals to Next and Ikea.

One village – twO lOcatiOns! athletes’ village takes up temporary residence for duration of commonwealth games The multi award-winning Athletes’ Village has temporarily moved home to a new Sales Centre opposite Dalmarnock Railway Station as final preparations get underway for the Commonwealth Games. The new temporary sales centre is just off Playfair Street, opposite Dalmarnock Rail Station, G40 4LR. Opening hours are Thurs-Mon, 11am-5pm.

Many Pink Rose apartments offer great views of the river and the new woodland park

In 2014 alone The Village has been received top accolades from the Scottish Design Awards, Homes for Scotland, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Scottish Property Awards. The development has been consistently praised and rewarded by judges for its design, affordability, sustainability and the regeneration it has brought to the East End of Glasgow.

Sales of homes at The Village have been a phenomenal success - so much so that there are now only a handful of the stylish one bedroom ground floor apartments, The Pink Rose, remaining for sale in this latest release. The Pink Rose is a light and spacious one bedroom apartment that has been designed to the highest standard. These properties offer fantastic views of

the River Clyde and the new woodland park. They have their own front door and open plan living and kitchen area - with a French door leading out onto the outside space. DINNER @ HYDE BAR & DINING words ∙ Victoria Martin ∙ photos ∙ Susie Lowe

M

y flatmate Claire and I happen to suffer from being the most indecisive individuals in Glasgow. So, on a particular rainy Wednesday night and, given that we hadn’t done a ‘big shop’ for quite some time, takeaway or eating out were our only realistic options. Since our usual takeaway sadly doesn’t deliver wine or cocktails, we grabbed our umbrellas and went on the hunt for some dining inspiration. Bored with our usual haunts, we decided to be adventurous and try new bar and restaurant Hyde which is nestled snugly at the junction of Byres Road and Dumbarton Road. Upon grabbing a comfortable, roomy booth in the bar area, a bottle of Pinot Grigio, £16.95, was swiftly ordered and promptly delivered to the table. The Hyde menu is an appetising mix of seafood including lobster and oysters, steaks from the grill and hearty mains such as pulled pork and fish ‘n’ chips.

To start, we shared the grilled king prawns, £8.50, and a sunblush tomato tart, £5.50. The prawns, served in their shells, were well worth the extra effort to undress them. Likewise, the tart was light and the filling was flavoursome and surprisingly zingy. For mains I went for the sea bream, which was cooked to perfection and served with some delicious crab crushed potatoes, £10. My partner in crime went for the lamb leg steak, £15, cooked in Moroccan spices and served with spiced cous cous and a tasty vegetable tagine. Claire was making all the right noises to suggest that she was more than enjoying her lamb dish so, in the interest of a thoroughly rounded experience, I cheekily pinched a forkful and made some appreciative noises of my own. We succumbed to temptation and ordered dessert in the form of sticky toffee pudding and another tart, this time chocolate. Now, I’m something of a sticky toffee pudding

SUNSHINE? FRIENDS? WUDON! connoisseur and can honestly say it was up there with the best I’ve tried. The chocolate tart was also top notch and although we didn’t clear our plates, this was in no way an indication of any kind of dislike, simply that our jeans wouldn’t have been able to take the strain of another spoonful. We decided a cheeky nightcap was the only thing standing between two sufficiently stuffed girls and our taxi home so a Hyde ‘n’ Seek and a Lychee Martini were our picks from the impressive cocktail list. The friendly staff at Hyde was attentive without being overbearing and happy to help this indecisive duo make some thoroughly good choices. We gave ourselves a little pat on the back at making such a good dining choice that evening and, as we toddled off home in the rain slightly tipsy from the wine and cocktails combination, we could only ponder as to why our choices in men weren’t ever quite as successful… Hyde Bar & Dining, 9-17 Partick Bridge St, G11 6PN, Tel: 0141 334 9568.

Mix the above to create a delicious receipe for a wonderful day! Take away healthy sushi, fresh salads and tasty rice dishes to create a perfect picnic in the park. Or to book a table, call 0141 357 3033.

TAKE THREE

Dining outdoors in Glasgow can go from al fresco to all freezing but with this summer set to be a scorcher, we thought we’d risk a chilly reception and suggest a trio of outdoor eating destinations for your delectation.

City Café Bar & Grill With one of the city’s largest outdoor terraces, the Hilton Garden Inn’s City Café gets mighty busy when the sun shines and you may have to be patient as terrace tables can’t be pre-booked. The wait is worth it though, with good food on offer and even better river views. Good for… a get together with friends or a pre-concert nibble and tipple. Expect to pay… £5 for starters, £12 for mains and £19.50 for a bottle of house wine. Anything else? Service can be on the slow side but all the more time to catch the rays. Finnieston Quay, G3 8HN, Tel: 0141 227 1010.

Citation Unlike some city centre al fresco areas, Citation’s is a good size and off the main shopping drag so you won’t feel you’re sitting in a goldfish bowl. Privately owned, this Merchant City favourite is big on service and the comprehensive menu means most tastes are catered for. Good for… escaping shoppers while remaining in the city centre. Expect to pay… £9.25 for moules frites, £6.50 for a burger and £15.95 for a bottle of house wine. Anything else? It’s a good day-to-night venue so venture indoors to keep the party going. 40 Wilson St, G1 1HD, Tel: 0141 559 6799.

TAKE THREE | 69

Waverley Tea Room This Southside sun trap is well used throughout the year but comes into its own in the summer months when the terrace tables spill over with diners and drinkers. Weekend brunch is particularly popular with locals so if you spot a table, nab it quick. Good for… families as kids are welcome and there’s an indoor soft play area. Expect to pay… £7.99 for a burger, £8.99 for wild mushroom risotto and £14.95 for a bottle of house wine. Anything else? Good cocktail range and they offer ‘sharers’ in teapots for £12.50. 18 Moss Side Rd, G41 3TN. Tel: 0845 659 5903.

I-ON LOVES… Scotland’s latest artisan spirit, NB Gin. Reassuringly classic and uncompromising on quality, NB Gin is delicious straight up but we loved the NB Rose cocktail. Serve the gin over ice with a dash of Angostura bitters, a splash of rose lemonade and garnish with a wedge of orange – delicate yet vibrant and pretty close to perfection. Visit www.nbgin.com or Tel: 0845 4674547 for stockists and cocktail ideas.

PICK UP A PICNIC Make your al fresco escape in true Italian style with a Carluccio’s picnic hamper. Each hamper, £45, serves two and contains regional Italian dishes made fresh on the day and presented in a reusable cool bag. In Italy picnics tend to be a family affair – something Carluccio’s hasn’t forgotten with their addition of a children’s picnic, available for £10. Led by the award-winning Vintage Bar & Kitchen – which originally opened in Leith and named in 2014’s ‘Top 50 UK Gastropubs’ – the menu of consists of ‘fearless food for the soul’, including British charcuterie such as spreadable chorizo, pork scratchings and smoked pigs’ cheeks. We all scream for ice cream

Research carried out by the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation has found that the flavour of ice cream you pick can say a lot about your personality. Studies have found that vanilla lovers are easily suggestible and impulsive whilst chocolate indulgers are flirtatious, seductive and charming. But watch out for the argumentative mint choc chip choosers and beware of any aggressive rocky road rebels.

SWALLY

PARLIAMOGLASGOW ?

If you’re visiting Glasgow for the first time, understanding the ‘weegie’ (Glaswegian) dialect is as important as ensuring you’re prepared for experiencing four seasons in one day. This essential tongue-in-cheek guide will help if you ‘huvnae a scooby’ (don’t have a clue) what the locals are saying. Ya dancer – A celebratory response from someone when presented with a positive outcome to a situation such as discovering a fiver (five pound note) in their pocket they didn’t realise they had. Gaun yersel – A shout of encouragement you’re likely to hear at The Games, i.e. “Gaun yersel Michael Jamieson”. Haud yer wheesht – If someone asks you to ‘haud yer wheesht’, they are kindly requesting you to quieten down if it’s not too much trouble. Belter – A ‘belter’ is the commonly used term to describe something as being great, for example “It’s a belter of a day”. Taps Aff – On the rare occasion the sunshine puts in appearance in Glasgow, some men are known to go ‘tapps aff’, meaning the removal of their tops regardless of the condition of their physique. Swally – The consumption of an alcoholic beverage or two with some friends in a licensed venue is affectionately known as ‘going for a swally’. Hoachin’ – If somewhere is busy, it would be described as being ‘hoachin’ and is often preceded by the word ‘pure’, meaning extremely, i.e. “Buchanan Street was pure hoachin”. Stoatin doon – Sadly, no matter the time of year, rain is never too far away in Glasgow. It is said to be ‘stoatin doon’, when heavy rain is bouncing off the ground.
