Usually our December issue highlights our Iowa Junior Holstein members accomplishments at the National Junior Holstein Convention, however, due to Covid-19, the convention was cancelled. We would like to congratulate all of their accomplishments during this crazy past year.

President’s Perspective
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Well another year is almost behind us. We all had enough ups and downs throughout the year but look at the big picture, it was not a disaster. The corn crop did not burst the bins, but we have had worst years. We know Covid-19 is not going to be over until most likely next spring. For most of us life will go on, but with more caution. With that being said, planning is started for the March 20th 2021 Video State Sale. The selection process for the heifer raffle and sale has begun. There will still be a live auctioneer and live bidding in West Union on March 20th and a complimentary meal, just NO live animals. Photos and pedigrees of the lots will be on display. We are reaching out to our neighbors who have breeds of other color to merchandise there pure bred animal in our sale. Don’t forget to attend your district meeting. The time and place may change due to the pandemic, keep in touch with your district officers. I would like to thank Paula Smith for the 30 plus years she has dedicated to our state association. She has made the president’s job a lot easier with all her information at her finger tips. I am sure she will remain a very active within the Holstein association activities. Again THANK YOU Paula for all you have done. This is the time of year we all should look back and be thankful for all we have. One does not have to look far to see someone who has a bigger problem or a harder task or a more severe health issue than your own. So enjoy every day the good Lord gives you and do your best to make tomorrow enjoyable for those around you Have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a safe HOLIDAY season! Carl Mensen

2020 Iowa Holstein Princess
Seasons Greetings! 2020 has definitely been one of the craziest, most unpredictable years yet, but we’ve almost made it through! I hope everyone had a plentiful harvest, and I would like to congratulate everyone on their success showing this year. The quality of Holstein cattle at these shows was impeccable. As the holiday season continues, I hope that everyone eats as much food as possible, stays warm despite the dropping temperatures, and visits their loved ones. I’ve been grateful to be able to promote delicious dairy products and advocate for agriculture this year, and I’m excited to keep doing what I love as 2021 comes along. I’ve kept busy here at Iowa State University participating in various events through Block and Bridle, Sigma Alpha, and the Dairy Science Club where I was recently elected to serve as the Historian this upcoming year. I’m very excited for the spring semester and am looking forward to more, hopefully in person, events. If anyone needs to contact me, my email is ambere@iastate.edu and my number is (563) 929-6035. Why did you decide to attend ISU? When I decided my career path, I created a list of schools that would help me reach my goals. Iowa State offers many opportunities to help students figure out their path and allows students to become involved on campus in many different ways. What has been your most memorable college experience? When reminiscing on all the memorable moments at ISU, I struggle to pick just one. I would have to say that playing intramural sports with the dairy science club. This fall we competed in the softball intramural, and we always had a wonderful cheering section and team “moms” who would bring Capri Suns and snacks. What has been your favorite course? So far, my favorite course has been my dairy cattle science class. I love learning more about the industry and seeing my peer’s ideas in opinions in our class discussion questions. This class also has a lab portion where we can go to the dairy farm and gain hands on experience with the cows and tools we are leaning about. What are your future career goals? After graduating from Iowa State, I hope to begin Veterinary School to pursue my dreams of becoming a production animal veterinarian.

Iowa Holstein Association Association Scholarships
Remember to apply for the Iowa Holstein Association Scholarships and the Linda Pagel Scholarship. There is only one application, and applicants can designate which scholarship they are applying for on the form. The application form is available at www.iowaholsteins.org. Mail completed applications postmarked by February 1 to Trent & Leslie Henkes, 18467 165th St, Luana, IA 52156 or email completed applications to tlhenkes@neitel.net by February 1. Iowa Holstein Association Scholarship Up to four scholarships will be awarded. Applicant must be currently attending a four-year college or a one or two-year tech school or a short course program and majoring in Dairy Science. Preference will be given to Iowa Junior Holstein Association members. This scholarship can only be received one time. Linda Pagel Scholarship Linda Pagel served the Iowa Holstein Association as secretary and treasurer for 13 years. She also was a Family and Consumer Science teacher for many years. Youth have always been a part of her life. Her support and dedication to Iowa Holstein Juniors has be a large part of their success on the national level. The Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors would like to honor Linda with a scholarship for an active Iowa Junior Holstein Member or recent member. Applicant must be a member or recent member of the Iowa Junior Holstein Association and must have completed one year of secondary education. This $500 scholarship can only be received one time.

The Iowa Holstein Auxiliary will conduct the Iowa Holstein Princess Contest in conjunction with the Iowa Holstein Association Annual Meeting on February 27 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, Manchester. The rules are as follows. Candidate must be at least 17 years of age and not over 24 years of age by August 1, 2021. Candidate must have a dairy farm background with parents or guardians who are currently engaged in the production of milk for sale during the coming year. They must participate in the check-off to Midwest Dairy. The candidate will qualify if she has been away from home (at school, work, etc.) but still considers her parents’ or guardians’ farm her home. Her parents or guardians must be members of the Iowa Holstein Association. The candidate and/or her parents or guardians must own some registered Holsteins. The candidate must give a 3-5 minute presentation the day of the contest about dairy products and/or the dairy industry. The candidate no longer has to be affiliated with a district anymore. Anyone in the state is allowed in the competition. There may be several from one district competing. This young woman will hand out ribbons at district and state shows, write articles for the Herald, and do dairy promotions while representing the Iowa Holstein Association. She will also represent the Holstein breed in the Iowa State Dairy Princess pageant that will be held at the Iowa State Fair in August. Glen Alan Longhorn, 75, of Hawarden, Iowa passed away Saturday November 14, 2020 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Glen Alan Longhorn was born August 30, 1945 in New Hampton, Iowa. He was proud to be a 1959 8th grade graduate of Jacksonville #4 country school in a class of two and then graduated from New Hampton High School in 1963. 1963. Three days after his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the US Army; proudly serving his country for the next three years. With farming in his blood and using his GI bill, he attended Iowa State College for what was then known as the Winter Farm Op program. Glen married Nancy Uglum. on January 30, 1968. He worked at the local elevator, combined for others, milked and showed Jersey’s, was a herdsman, raised Kosher veal calves, designed and built The Cable Table, was a rodeo announcer, and created the Longhorn Youth Rodeo. In 1976, he started a 30 year career in the field of Bovine Podiatry. Glen married Karen (Hughes) Allen on August 2, 1997 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden. In 2006, the pair formed 2 CC Trucking. Every load was handled with TLC, and treated as his own. Every accommodation was made for the seller, buyer and anyone else involved. His last “road” trip returned him home on October 15. Glen was proceeded in death by his parents James Boeck Longhorn and Mabel Doris (Wait) Longhorn, Nancy Longhorn, brothers Gary Longhorn, Roy Longhorn; son-in-law Scott Covey; father-in-law Dick Madock. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Karen of Hawarden; four children, Scott (Alayna) Longhorn of Pilot Mound, Shelly Longhorn (Mike Clousing) of Pewaukee, WI, David (Theresa) Longhorn of O’Fallon, IL, and Amy (Dennis) Hajek of Eyota, MN; brother Roger (Flo) Longhorn of Bredenam-zee, Belgium, and a sister Janis Longhorn of Kansas City MO; 15 grandchildren, his mother-in-law LaVerne Hughes Madock of Hawarden.

Quiz Bowl Test All Iowa juniors are invited to take the Quiz Bowl test to qualify for the quiz bowl teams or jeopardy that will represent Iowa at the 2021 National Convention. The test will be given on December 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Iowa Junior Convention at the Comfort Inn, Dyersville. In case of bad weather, the test will be given December 31. Contact Jeff Hammerand by 11 a.m. on December 30 if you need to take the test later in the day. If you are unable to take the test at the convention, contact Jeff Hammerand at 563-580-3908 (cell) or 24heavenlee@gmail.com. Everyone will take the same test. The top four scores in the junior division (9 to 15 years as of January 1, 2021) and the top four scores in the senior division (16-21 and not over 21 on Jan. 1, 2021) will make up the quiz bowl teams. All other juniors taking the test are eligible for the jeopardy contest, which has three divisions: junior 9-13, intermediate 14-17 and senior 18-21. Questions for the test will come from the following sources: 2020 and 2021 Holstein and Ayrshire Dairy Bowl questions, Holstein Dairy Jeopardy questions and 2020 Hoard’s Dairyman, Holstein Pulse and Holstein World are beneficial to review. Current news questions may also be asked on the test; check out the Holstein Association website to stay updated and review for the test as well. Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy questions can be found by going to www.holsteinfoundation.org. State Junior Annual Meeting The State Junior Annual Meeting will be held on December 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Comfort Inn, Dyersville. All juniors are welcome to attend. We will be electing new officers and making plans for the new year. National Junior Member Awards Any junior members wishing to apply for National DJM or YDJM should update their books and submit a black and white copy to Jeff Hammerand postmarked by January 5, 2021. Members must have won the award on the state level to apply for the national award. Also all applicants must be state and national members. State Junior Awards Award applications are due postmarked January 5, 2021 for Iowa Holstein Young Distinguished Junior Member (for youth 9-15 years old as of January 1, 2021) and Iowa Holstein Distinguished Junior Member (16-20 years of age as of January 1, 2021). These awards will be presented at the Iowa Holstein Convention Banquet on February 27 in Manchester. For the Iowa DJM and Young DJM Awards, junior members must use the national forms in applying for these awards. Prepared Public Speaking Contest & National Junior Folding Display Contest The details for the 2021 Prepared Public Speaking Contest and Folding Display Contest will be announced at a later date. These contests will be on the agenda at the state meeting on December 30. Wisconsin Award Trip An Awards Trip to Wisconsin is available to juniors at least 16 years of age. Participants selected will join Wisconsin award winners in visiting dairy herds in the state at the end of March or first part of April. To be considered for the trip, please write a one page story on why you would like to go on the Awards Trip. Previous trip participants are eligible to reapply. Futurity Challenge Entries Due February 1, 2021
How do I enter? • Complete the Futurity Form in Excel available at www.iowaholsteins.org and email it to the Futurity secretary with appropriate fees by February 1, 2021. A pdf form will also be available online if you don’t have access to Excel. Eligible animals are those registered Holstein females born September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020. The initial fee is low to encourage you to enter several calves. You can always drop payment at subsequent deadlines. What about heifers already entered? • Entries made last year for the 2021 and 2022 Futurities will need to be updated. The Futurity Secretary will mail your form to you. Simply make payments on those animals you wish to re-enter, crossing out any you wish to drop. These entries are also due February 1, 2021. What kind of calves should be entered? • Your show calves that are already halter broke. Is your calf bred to have a good udder? Enter her! • Your fancy calf, out of a good cow, that was just the wrong age for the calf class. Enter her! • Last summer's babies. They may show as first lactation 3-Year-Olds, but that just might be to their advantage. Enter them! • The calf you plan to sell in the Iowa Spring Sale. A $2 entry may reap bigger dividends at the sale. Enter that calf! • Any calf you might sell as a show calf or junior project calf. You pay the first entry and if the buyer wants to keep up the entries they may. It is the seller's responsibility to inform the buyer of the animal's eligibility, and the buyer's responsibility to submit subsequent fees. Attention Junior Members • To be eligible for JUNIOR BRED AND OWNED awards for future Futurities your name must be listed on the animal's registration paper as the BREEDER. The Challenge • During the next year, you are breeding your cows and heifers for calves that will be eligible for Futurities in 2024 and 2025. Think about the bulls you are using. Think about the cow that is the foundation. Can you breed the futurity winner? Great cows are usually no accident! Have a plan, carry it out and let us all evaluate the results. See you at the show!

This scholarship is available only to non-dairy science majors and can only be received one time. Iowa Holstein Association Board Meeting Minutes President Carl Mensen called the Board of Directors meeting of the Iowa Holstein Association to order at 11:12 a.m. on November 7, 2020 at Gus & Tony’s Townhouse Cafe, West Union, Iowa. All members were present except for Dan Bolin, District 2; Jim Vierhout, District 4; Jeff Hammerand and Bob Rahe, District 8 and Tom Holub, Mark Knudtson, and Tom Simon, Directors-at-Large. Doug Lyons moved to seat Dennis Devore for Tom Simon, seconded by Kevin Fossum. Motion carried. Doug Lyons moved to approve the minutes of the August 29 meeting as printed, seconded by Larry Landsgard. Motion carried. Shellie Volker presented the Treasurer’s report. Doug Lyons moved to approve the Treasurer's report, seconded by Larry Landsgard. Motion carried. Paula Smith, Secretary, reported on the Executive Committee Meeting. Nominations for the Association awards were considered and selected. Recipients will be notified with the awards being presented at the convention. The ad hoc committees were appointed as follows: Auditing Committee: Walt Wessel, chair, Alden Arthur and Linda Pagel; Nominating Committee: Dave Chapman, chair, Kevin Fossum, Jeff Hammerand and Trent Henkes; and PDCC: Trent Henkes, chair, Doug Lyons and Paul Stempfle. It is recommended at this time to drop the Resolutions Committee. It is recommended to merge the Herald Committee with the Program Development and Management Committee. Standing Committee changes were made with new assignments as follows: Junior Advisory Committee - Mary Fliehler; Program Development and Management - Trent Henkes, Chair, Leslie Henkes and Mark Steffens; Sale Committee Scott Stempfle, Co-Chair; Tom Simon; and Show Committee - Dave Chapman. The State Convention will be held on February 27 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, Manchester. Carl Mensen reported that Secretary/Editor Paula Smith presented a letter of resignation effective December 31, 2020. Herald - Paula Smith mentioned that the December Herald will be the Junior issue, and ads are due anytime. Junior - No report was given. Membership - Shellie Volker reported that membership letters will be mailed out the beginning of December. Program Development & Management - The 2021 State Convention will hosted by the State Association at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, Manchester on February 27 with more details to come. There wasn’t a State Picnic this year due to Covid. If someone is interested in hosting it next year, please notify a member of the committee. Sale - After discussion for various options for the 2021 Iowa State Sale, Matt Henkes moved to have a video sale, seconded by Dennis Devore. Motion carried. The sale proposal is as follows: The video sale will be through Cowbuyer. Bidding will start online March 16 and the bid off will start at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 20. A free meal will be served for a time that day. Carl Mensen and Walt Wessel will coordinate the Mensens Holsteins meal. We will include group lots and colored breeds. Brown Swiss will not be included Carl & Lisa 21958 Ungs Road as they have their own Guttenberg, IA 52052 state sale. We will aim 563-853-2402 for 70 lots with 35-40 Holsteins and 25-30 Mensens lee Precise colored breeds. Colmensenholstein@gmail.com

Tickets will be available from state board members starting in December. The meeting broke for lunch at 12:20 p.m. and resumed at 1:12 p.m. Show - Paul Stempfle reported that all but one of the sponsors for the Midwest Fall National Show has paid. Next year’s show will be hosted by District 1 in West Union on August 3 and 4. Trent Henkes moved to approve the Executive and Standing Committee reports, seconded by Walt Wessel. Motion carried. New Business - Trent Henkes moved to adopt the following Bylaw change of Bylaw III Section 2. by changing 50 members to 30 members: District Directors. Each district shall be entitled to one director elected by the voting membership of the Association residing in that district at the annual district meeting. However, to be entitled to one district director, there must be 30 or more farmer or retired farmer members in the district based on the previous year’s membership. The term shall start at the board reorganization meeting held at the annual convention. Also changing the levels of members in Additional District Directors. In addition to the regular district directors, the voting members of each district may elect additional district directors based upon the following schedule of paid farmer and retired farmer membership in the Association within the district, as of the first day of September of each year preceding the year for which elected. Such additional district directors shall serve for a term of one year starting at the time of the board reorganization meeting, and shall serve no more than six (6) consecutive years as an additional district director. 60 to 100 members = One additional director; 101 to 200 members = Two additional directors; 201 to 300 members = Three additional directors. Seconded by Dan Moon. Motion carried. Kevin Fossum moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Doug Lyons. Motion carried with adjournment at 1:24 pm. Respectfully submitted, Paula Smith, Secretary

Obituaries
Reuben Henry Steffens, 96, of Clermont passed away peacefully on October 19, 2020, with his children by his side at the Ossian Senior Hospice where he had been residing since March 12, 2020. Reuben was born on the family farm near Eldorado, Iowa, October 2, 1924, to Edward and Frieda (Vagts) Steffens. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Eldorado. Reuben began his education in a rural school, Dover #4, and graduated from the West Union High School in 1942. After graduation he worked on the family farm until he joined the Army in 1945. Tech-4 Steffens served in the Pacific Theater and was very proud of his service to his country. After he was discharged from the Army, Reuben attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette and worked at the extension office. It was during this time that he saw a lovely young telephone operator, Mary Christensen, at the telephone office in West Union. A mutual friend later introduced them at a dance at the Oelwein Coliseum. Reuben and Mary were wed on August 1, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. They lived briefly in West Union before moving to their own farm four miles west of Clermont, a farm that they would develop and expand over the next thirty-five years. Reuben and Mary raised four children there: Brenda, Alan, Kevin and Karen. In 1983, Reuben and Mary moved to their new home in Clermont, where Reuben continued to have an active role in the farming operation in partnership with Alan. Reuben had always loved farming; he was born to be a farmer. It was Reuben that brought the first registered Holstein to his parents’ farm in 1938 as a 4-H project. Reuben would win many awards with this Holstein heifer as well as many other awards in the years to come. Reuben and Mary started simply with five cows and five sows and a few chickens, but through hard work and dedication they added cows and acres over the years and built Reu-Mar Registered Holstein Farm into a very successful dairy operation. Besides his success with farming, Reuben was recognized by Fayette County in 1997 with the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. Both Fayette County and Iowa honored Reuben with distinguished dairyman awards, including Iowa Master Holstein Breeder award. During this time, the Fayette County Fair became one of the premiere fairs in Northeast Iowa. Reuben served many organizations throughout his life including president of Clermont Coop, West Clermont Lutheran church council, 4-H leader, director of the Tri-States Co-op, president of the Fayette County Holstein Breeders, DHIA and other dairy boards, and was a member of the Clermont Legion Post #375. Reuben was very proud of being able to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC, and for receiving an Honor Quilt for his service. Besides his passion for farming and his Holstein herd, Reuben had a passion for fishing. He loved fishing for trout in the Northeast Iowa trout streams with his family. He also enjoyed fishing in Texas where he traveled with Mary for many winters. Reuben would go fishing with his buddies while Mary would do her painting and crafts. He also enjoyed hunting for squirrels, turkey, pheasant and deer when he was younger. Reuben was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; sisters, Edna Steffens and Anita (Jack) Parsons; brothers, Erbie (Gerry) Steffens and Lester (Leona) Steffens; brothers and sistersin-law, Naomi Stewart, Dick Crowe, Delmar Stewart, Marjorie Wilson and Clyde Wilson. Reuben is survived by his children, Brenda (Mark) Steffens Johnson; Alan (Brenda) Steffens and their children Aaron, Andrea (Brad) Sayles and Aric (Wendy); Kevin (Marilyn) Steffens and son, Jonathon (Krista) and Karen (Marc) Vandegrift and their children, Alison (Sam) and Matt (fiancée, Baylee); seven great-grandchildren and brother-in-law, Roger Christensen and sister-in-law, Ruth Anne Crowe. Ronald James Chapman, son of Ronald Clare and Mary Kathryn (Goeders) Chapman, was born February 12, 1943 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He received his education in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven Consolidated School in 1961. Ron was president of his senior class and enjoyed attending and organizing his class reunions. He was very active in 4-H, showing cattle at the county, district, and state levels, and served as president of F.F.A. Following high school Ron continued his education at Iowa State University. After one year he returned to Ruthven to start farming. On March 26, 1966 Ron was united in marriage to Sandra Miller at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The couple made their home near Ruthven where Ron
had a registered Holstein dairy herd. To this union three children were born. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and he had a special bond with their daughter, Debbie. Ron and Sandi have had a Shaklee business for 42 years and he enjoyed the many trips they took. Ron was a faithful and devoted member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg and served on the Lakeside Lutheran Home board, having served as president of both. Ron passed away Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Mary Chapman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dick and Martha Miller; and brothers-in-law, Joe Brennan, Mike Flannegan and Ron Miller. He is survived by his wife, Sandi of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his children, David (Lisa) Chapman of Ruthven, Iowa, Debbie Chapman of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Dan (Tammy) Chapman of Emmetsburg, Iowa; grandchildren, Cody, Nicholas, Jenna, Joseph, Rachel, Katie and Jillian Chapman; his sisters, Dolores “Dode” (Robert) Tanner of Clear Lake, Iowa, Arlene Brennan of Iowa City, Iowa, Juanita Helmke of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Marietta Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lorraine and David Naig of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Greg and Ardella Miller of Keokuk, Iowa, and Rick and Sheila Miller of Waterloo, Iowa; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.

This year we welcomed the Fette’s and Hammersland’s to our show family. With the pandemic freeing up most of their time, the kids spent many hours at the farm working with their calves. Team Henkeseen has a bright future!
