President’s Perspective

Hello Iowa Holstein Friends, Summer sped by quickly. I hope everybody has enjoyed their county fairs, and made happy memories with family and friends.

The National Holstein Convention took us to Lexington, Ky, the beautiful bluegrass state. We were able to take in the beauty and history of thoroughbred horses by visiting Keeneland Racetrack, and a couple of the many expansive and well-manicured horse farms. Sheri Danhof, Dan Moon and I served as delegates, representing Iowa. As usual, the Junior teams from Iowa were competitive. We hope, in the future, Trent Henkes considers another run for The National Holstein Board of Directors, as he was a very viable candidate from Iowa, and made many new acquaintances.

The Iowa State Holstein show was held in Manchester this year. The weather, the attendance, and the quality of cattle were great! We were able to honor, John Hoeger and family, personally, with The Distinguished Service Award. Thank you to all who volunteered to make the show a success!!

In August, we headed to Farnear Holsteins, for the Iowa state picnic, where we were fortunate to have a slight break from the extreme heat of summer. The state-of-the-art-facilities, cattle, and the hospitality and great meal, were impressive, as expected! Thank you to Tom and Rick Simon and families, for hosting this annual event!

Again, next year, we will need everybody willing and able, to participate, on our committees, to continue our success. If you have a preference, would like to switch, or know which committee you want to serve on, let me know.

Congratulations and Good Luck, to Ashley Elsbernd, and Elizabeth Fossum, our new Iowa Dairy Royalty! Also thank you to Brynlee Volker, Iowa Holstein Princess, and Naomi Scott, retiring Iowa Princess and past Iowa Holstein Princess, for all there help throughout the year!

As fall approaches quickly this year, we hope God rewards us with a bountiful harvest, even though most of Iowa had a lack of rainfall this summer. Have a safe harvest, and take time to enjoy the beauty of nature! See you at World Dairy Expo!

Your President, Walt Wessel

Hi Iowa Holstein Members,

It’s been a great summer of shows, serving ice cream and riding in a parade. Started off June Dairy Month showing some of my heifers in Fredericksburg followed by riding in the Dairy Days Parade. Fast forward to July for the District One Holstein Show and the Fayette County Fair. I enjoyed showing again and handing out ribbons and awards to my fellow exhibitors. At our fair, I got to spend time with my family while also serving ice cream in the Snack Barn.

Finally in August, the Iowa State Holstein Show and the Iowa State Holstein Picnic. I had an amazing time showing my cattle and connecting with all of the other exhibitors. On behalf of myself and the Iowa Junior Holstein Association, I would like to thank everyone who sponsors our awards and shows! We couldn’t do any of it without all of you!

As always if you have an event you would like me to help out with or would like to reach out to me for anything my phone number is (319) 240-6266 and my email is brynleev03@gmail.com.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy harvest!

What has been your most memorable college experience? So far, my most memorable college experience has been the Iowa State football games. I love going to Jack Trice and cheering on the Cyclones. The stadium is always loud, and the atmosphere is great.

What has been your favorite course? My favorite course so far has been Animal Science 235 (Dairy Cattle Science). I love being able to learn more about dairy cattle and expand my knowledge. During the lab we get to go to the Iowa State Dairy and learn more hands on with the animals and I really enjoy that.

What are your future career goals? My future career goals are to go back to Le Mars and dairy farm with my family.

Iowa Holstein Association Board Meeting Minutes

The August board meeting was called to order by President Walt Wessel at Farnear Holsteins, Farley on Saturday August 26, 2023 at 1:35PM. Rick Demmer was seated for Joe Gibbs. Members present were Trent Henkes, Heather Moore, Tom Simon, Jeff Hammerand, Sheri Danhof and Dan Moon. Minutes from March meeting were read and approved as was the treasurers report.

Jeff Hammerand gave report on the Juniors. National convention was successful for the kids with the Junior Dairy Bowl team finishing 5th and Dominic Hammerand finishing 2nd in Junior Jeopardy. The State Holstein Junior show was also successful with 37 cows and 69 heifers shown in Manchester. He again appreciates all those who sponsor trophies for the kids and the bills will be mailed out for those. As for the State Junior Convention it will be held in the same location and around the same time as pry years. National Convention 2024 will be held in Utah and are possibly looking at doing some fundraising for that trip. Membership report was given by Shellie Volker. The association is maintaining , with a few new members each year to replace those who are no longer members.

Program, Development and Herald report was given by Trent Henkes. Trent thanked Tom and the rest of the family for hosting the picnic this year. Also anyone interested in placing an ad for the Herald those are due soon so it can be sent out before EXPO. District 8 will be in charge of hosting the State Convention this year and Genosource has offered to host the State Picnic in 2024.

The Sale report was given by Sheri Danhof. The sale did things a little different with more cattle and paid for more help. They also printed fewer catalog. Moving forward Sheri and Scott Stempfle

2023 Hawkeye Holstein Futurity

will be stepping down as co-chairs. Sheri will be willing to help and share information. Raffle has and continues to be helpful and they will be looking for someone to take over in 2024.

The Show report was given by Rick Demmer. It was a nice turn out for the 2023 show with 99 heifers and 84 cows shown in Manchester. There was around 240 entered and the ultrasound turned out good on 30 cows. We are planning to have the State Show at Des Moines next year unless someone decides to host it. The issue with having it away from the State Fair is the scheduling, because we want the kids to enjoy their county fairs as that’s where it all starts. It was mentioned that the rules need to be gone over and updated. The show committee may meet to go over the rules at a later date. There was no ultrasound again at the Iowa State fair so they will be checking in on that at the PDCC meeting.

Dennis DeVore gave a report on National. He said registrations are picking up and that he wil be 100% staffed across the US so if you need Dennis give him a call. He mentioned that we tried to get Trent Henkes elected to the National Board, but just didn’t have the votes.

Next board meeting will be held in West Union at Gus and Tony’s Townhouse Café on November 18th.

Adjouned by Jeff Hammerand.

Submitted Respectfully, Shellie Volker

Obituaries

Arlene Gerlach, of Toledo, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the age of 91, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. A Funeral Service will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo with Pastor Alan Mullikin officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Arlene Hopper, the youngest of five children was born on January 27, 1932 to Marshall and Vera (Schrader) Hopper in Tripoli, Iowa in Bremer County. She spent her childhood living on various farms in the Toledo area attending Toledo Public Schools. After meeting at the National Dairy Cattle Congress, Arlene was united in marriage to Dale Gerlach of St. Ansgar, Iowa in October 1948. They lived on a farm in St. Ansgar until they moved to their farm in rural Toledo, where they ran a dairy operation. They had three children, Barbara (John) Gudenkauf, Vicki (Chuck) Sawyer and Steven (Becky) Gerlach, along with eight grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Bud Hopper. Arlene and Dale operated a dairy operation and received many awards in the Dairy Industry and honors at the Iowa State Fair and National Dairy Cattle Congress, Arlene and Dale celebrated fifty-nine years of marriage before his passing in 2007. Arlene was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo and was active in her church. She served as a 4-H leader and worked as a waitress at Dick’s Restaurant in Toledo as her children grew older.

She loved gardening and growing flowers. She was an avid card player and enjoyed playing Bridge during her later years. She was a huge fan of the Iowa State Cyclones. Family was the most important thing to Arlene. Sunday lunches with extended family began with her mother and this tradition continued throughout Arlene’s life with Sunday lunch with her kids as the highlight of her week. All of her grandchildren were very precious to her. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dale; a brother Paul Hopper; two sisters Phyllis McComas and Dorothy Ohman; and her grandson Brian Sawyer.

North Scott High School with the Class of 1973.  Roger married the love of his life, Jodi Haars, on April 27, 1985 in Davenport.

Roger was a dairy farmer his entire life.  He loved his 200 special ladies in the dairy barn and knew them all by name.  Roger was passionate about raising Holsteins and showcasing them every summer at the Mississippi Valley Fair.  He cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his granddaughters.  He also enjoyed his nightly bowl of Blue Bunny ice cream and frequently “resting his eyes”.

Roger will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Jodi; two daughters, Cara (Brandon) Richmond and Callie (Matt) Rammelsberg; four granddaughters, Mya, Bria, Aria, and Emersyn; and one grandson due on June 30, 2023; seven brothers and sisters, Karen (Lonny) Ganzer, Randy (Cindy) Blake, Rick Blake, Keith (Colette) Blake, Kathy (Geoff) Polzin, Kevin (Cindy) Blake and Karol (Keith) Martz; and his mother-in-law, Beverly Gustafson.

Karen Margaret Schantz, 60, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on March 5, 1963, in Elkader, the daughter of Paul and Margarete (Dannwolf) Mills. Karen was raised and educated in Strawberry Point and was a 1981 graduate of Starmont High School. She then attended Hawkeye Community College studying Animal Science.

On May 5, 1984, Karen was united in marriage to Alan D. Schantz at PalisadesKeppler State Park near Mt. Vernon. Three children were born to this union. The family settled on their farm near Strawberry Point. Karen helped Alan farm and raise their children. During these years, she also helped to raise 15 foster children and one foreign exchange student.

Karen grew up showing cattle and continued this over the years. She loved showing cattle and helped her children and many others show cattle at the fair. Karen was very involved with 4-H clubs, helping with the Lodomillo Leaders and St. Olaf Jr. Farmers. She was an excellent seamstress and a wonderful cook.  Besides her family, raising dairy cows was everything to her.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Alan Schantz of Strawberry Point; her three children, Korey, Maxwell, and Isabella Schantz all of Strawberry Point; five siblings, Erwin (Debbie) Mills of Waterloo, Heidi deGier of Strawberry Point, Robin (Roger) Baker of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, Jay (Cathy) Mills of Strawberry Point, and Linda (Scott) Palzkill of Linden, Wisconsin; stepmother, Judy Mills of Nauvoo, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Katherine Thompson of Tennessee, Barb (Wayne) Stevens of Virginia, Linda (Dean) Timmins of Washington, and Becky (Craig) Mattson of Fairfield; brothers-inlaw, Dave (Regina) Schantz of Washington and Craig Manning of Fairfield; and many nieces and nephews.

Distinguished Service Award

This year’s Distinguished Service Award winner has been involved in the Iowa Holstein Association for nearly 50 years. His interest in agriculture began growing up on his family’s 160 acre dairy and hog farm and really developed while he was in high school working for Frank and Carol Sivisend’s Prairie Moon Guernsey farm.

Following high school, in 1968, he graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s degree and eventually a masters in Ag Education and Ag Economics. Following graduation, he taught high school Ag education for a year, then spent 8 years teaching at Hawkeye Community College, where he was very involved as an advisor for several of the agricultural clubs and activities involving numerous sales and auctions. During this time, he also graduation from Mason City auction school.

We thank each and everyone of our show sponsors as it truly takes a village to run and operate shows every year. Please make sure your thank you’s are written to these generous sponors of this years Open Show and District 8 show that was held on August 1st and 2nd at the Delawar County Fairgrounds in Manchester, Iowa. Also, thank you to our judges of this years shows, Tyler Carter and Tyler Reynolds for sorting through the classes both days.

In the late 1970’s he purchased a farm and began merchandising Registered Holsteins through both private treaty and auctions. In 1980 he hosted his first Annual Elite Invitational sale which was held for nearly 15 years at the farm. In 1981 he managed his first herd dispersal for the Biershenk family in Van Horne Iowa. He continued to manage and auctioneer hundreds of sales including, the Iowa and Minnesota State Holstein Sales and UW Plateville Pioneer Dairy Club Sale, until as recently as a few years ago. During this time, he sold Registered Holsteins in 19 states highlighted by the opportunity to co-manage 2 National Holstein Convention sales, Iowa in 2001 and Nebraska in 2004. For me personally (Sheri), he was a great asset and supporter of various Regancrest sales over the years.

In 1997 he purchased and began the Heifer Exchange with Frank Regan and Mark Butz, where they provided recipient services using Registered Holstein heifers to primarily Registered Holstein breeders throughout the US.

Using his talents with the microphone, this gentleman emceed several State Convention banquets, the National Convention banquet as well as ring announcer for numerous District 1 and Iowa State Holstein Shows as well as many other events.
