PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

Hello Iowa Holstein Friends,

I am honored to be voted in as your new president. For those who may not know me, I have, along with my wife, Judy, established Wesselcrest Holsteins on our Heritage Farm. We milk 275 Registered Holstein Cows with 4 Lely robots, just outside of Colesburg, Iowa. We are in partnership with our two sons: Brent and Staci, and Jason and Stephanie. We have 8 beautiful grandchildren. Cambrie is excited to serve as Little Miss Squirt for Clayton County this year.

Spring was a challenge again this year, for some more than others. Our best wishes to those impacted by tornadoes and floods.

Congratulations to all our award winners at the State Convention held at Promise Land Winery. Dan Moon did a great job as president these past two years.

We had a successful and very profitable Holstein Sale in March, chaired by Sheri Danhof and Scott Stempfle. The line up of Iowa cattle were awesome. I think we should have both, happy consignors and happy buyers. Special thanks to Scott Courtney for auctioneering the sale, and to all the volunteers who helped make the sale a success. Thanks also to Blake Courtney and Shelley Volker for handling the raffle.

Everybody had a fantastic time on our bus tour to Wisconsin. The cattle were phenominal at all 6 stops. Thank you to Jess Rediske and Sheri Danhof for helping me coordinate the tour. I have received many suggestions already, on possibilities for future tours, with varied transportation and locations. etc. Of course, this will be discussed at future board meetings.

We will be heading to Lexington, Kentucky in June for the National Convention. I look forward to being a representative for Iowa, along with Sheri Danhof and Scott Courtney, where our voices on policy are very important. Good luck to all the Jr. members in the different competitions. We are Iowa strong!

Good luck to everyone showing at your county fairs! The Holstein State Show will be held at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in early Aug. Remember, we are always looking for volunteers, so please consider lending a hand as needed.

Our state picnic will be held at Farnear Holsteins at Farley, IA in late August. This should be an exciting and must-see tour. We will be having our committee meetings that day as usual. We look forward to everyone’s participation and input.

Always remember, I am only a phone call away for suggestions and concerns. Everybody, have a safe, blessed, enjoyable and profitable summer!

Your President, Walt

Outstanding Young Breeder Award Matt Zuercher, Postville

Matt and his wife Tara along with their children Braelyn, Brooks and Braxton own and operate Z-Breeze Holsteins in Postville, IA.

Growing up Matt was actively involved on the family farm and grew a great interest in the cows.

Throughout the years, he was involved with 4-H and exhibited cattle at various shows. His showing career stared at the age of 2 at the Big 4 Fair in Postville. Matt became more involved with the daily operations of the dairy farm as he was a teenager. The family often jokes that Matt is the only reason the cows did not get sold years ago.

In 2013, Matt purchased the cow herd from his parents, Joe & Linda, resulting in Matt being a 4th generation dairyman. Currently, he milks 45 cows in a tie stall barn on the family farm. He has focused on developing his herd by using high type sires with deep pedigrees.

In addition to dairy farming, Matt is involved with the daily operations of Zuercher Trucking, LLC which hauls milk to both Wapsie Valley Creamery in Independence and Prairie Farms in Luana. The trucking company also hauls grain and fertilizer. In between chores, you will typically find Matt driving milk truck or semi. He is part owner of Zuercher Ridge, LLC which is a crop farming operation owned with his brother, Chris and father, Joe. Matt is also a distributor for Blondin Sires. His wife Tara works full time as a nurse and assists on the family farm and business. The future looks to be busy as usual for their family, the farm and their other various endeavors. Matt & Tara.

Tara recently moved to the family farm and purchased the building site from his parents. They have a couple of improvement projects planned for the very near future which includes putting up a new barn and installing a robotic milker. Their children are getting started with 4-H and are growing a love for showing cattle. The kids are involved with sports, church and school activities. Matt, Tara and the rest of the Z-Breeze crew always look forward to their annual trip to the Iowa State Fair. Congradulations Matt on this years Young Breeder Award!

INTRODUCING OUR 2023-2024 PRINCESS

Hello Iowa Holstein Members! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Brynlee Volker. I am the 20 year old daughter of Bill & Shellie Volker of Sumner. I have 3 sisters Brylie, Brenna, and Brielle. Currently, I am studying Human Resource Management at Hawkeye Community College.

In my free time I like working with cows, golfing, spending time with friends and family, and going to my family's cabin on the Mississippi River. I’m back for another year of serving as your Princess and can’t wait for the summer ahead.

I will be staying in Cedar Falls and working for the summer and of course helping my mom whenever I have time. I am excited for the district shows and state show and connecting with more members of our association.

If there are any other events you would like me to attend please reach out!

Email: brynleev03@gmail.com Phone: (319) 240-6266 Have a great summer everyone, Brynlee Volker

2023 Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors

Front row L to R: Vice President Paul Stempfle, Doug Lyons, Sheri Danhof, Treasurer Shellie Volker President Walt Wessel, Back row L to R: Jeff Hammerand, Tom Simon, Trent Henkes, Kevin Fossum, Herald Editor

Brianna Lucey, Dan Moon, Larry Landsgard, & Doug Brown.

The March 2023 meeting was held prior to our Iowa State Holstein Sale. Meeting was called to order by Dan Moon at 9:41 A.M. The treasure report was approved by Jeff Hammerand and seconded by Paul Stempfle. February minutes were also approved by Duane Gibbs and seconded by Sheri Danhof.

The Juniors ran our lunch stand for the sale and proceeds went back to our Juniors. The Iowa Holstein Juniors also helped the Shade of Excellence sale by running their lunch stand as well the following weekend. Thank you Iowa Holstein Juniors! We are also looking for sponsors for the Iowa State Holstein Show. Juniors have been busy practicing and getting ready for National Convention in June.

The program development committee announced that this year's State Holstein Picnic will be hosted by Tom and Rick Simon of Farnear Holstein located in Farley, Iowa. State convention update was given by Trent Henkes and it was a success! Over $1,000 in donations, $3,280.00 was raised in ticket sales, with a cost of $2900.00.

Sale committee shared new ideas that were shared the night of the convention. Some of these ideas were to make some changes with raffle calves for next year's sale. The idea was to have a larger group of calves to select from the night before, instead of having only four animals to pick from and to help draw in more interest. Once the winning ticket is drawn, let the winner choose a calf and sell the rest like normal. Looking for more insights and ideas on what others may have.

The Show committee announced to keep the State Fair rotation as is. It has been opened up that if a district would like to host the Iowa State Holstein Show the year it is to be held down at State Fair, the committee needs to know by November 1st. There will be sawdust available on the grounds for the state show in Manchester this year. An ultrasound person has been contacted and the date is confirmed for the show.

All committee reports were approved by Blake Courtney and seconded by Doug Lyons.

Dennis Devore from Holstein USA shared information about additional individuals to be added for field representatives in our area. So far they have interviewed three talented individuals. Thank you Dennis for your insight and guidance.

Bus trip was discussed and Walt had 15 people signed up this far and it was stated they needed at least 30 people to attend the trip. Iowa State and NICC students were welcome to come on the tour. The bus was a 50 passenger bus that was out of Ames.

New Business:

No new business. Meeting was adjourned at 10 by Dan Bolin and Seconded by Doug Lyons.

Submitted Respectfully,

Attention Juniors!

Summer Meeting - We will hold our summer meeting at the State show on July 31st at the Delaward Co. Farigrounds.

Why did you decide to attend NICC?

I wanted to attend NICC for their vet tech program and after a semester I realized I only wanted to work with large animals. Which is when I switched over to the Dairy Science program.

What has been your most memorable college experience?

My most memorable experience I have had during college is going to national PAS with my teammates and fellow classmates after finishing first at state. Dave couldn't drive down with us because of the annual meeting was the same day so the whole car ride down the four of us talked about our farms and cattle experience.

What has been your favorite course?

Applied Animal Health taught by Doc Harvey was my favorite class so far at NICC. During that class we got hands on experience on treating and diagnosing all large animals and it helped me gain valuable knowledge that I use everyday.

What are your future career goals?

My future career goals are to take over my family dairy and continue working part time at Kregels as calf manager.

D. Special Rules Applying to the Iowa Junior Holstein Show:

1. Each exhibitor must be a junior member of the Iowa Holstein Association and be 9 years of age as of January 1 of the current year and under the age of 21 years as of January 1 of the current year.

2. All animals exhibited must be registered by the Holstein Association in the name of the junior member or parents’ name or farm prefix or be certified as a bona fide 4-H project by the County Extension Director or as an FFA project by the FFA Advisor. Certification must be brought to the Iowa Junior Holstein Show. The animal must be in the junior’s name to be eligible for Junior All-American.

3. a. If junior members are in FFA or 4-H, entries must be entered through FFA or 4-H by July 1. Please refer to the information available online at www.iowastatefair.org for entry deadlines, fees, rules, etc.

b.However, if you are in 4-H or FFA and are exhibiting an animal which is not a 4-H or FFA project, be sure to enter those animals in the Iowa State Fair Open Class Show by July 1.

c.For junior members not in 4-H or FFA or junior members who do not meet the state fair age requirements for 4-H or FFA, enter your animals in the Iowa State Fair Open Class Show by July 1.

6. Juniors must show their own animals. Excusing a member from personally exhibiting his or her animal(s) defeats one of the most important objectives of Holstein work. Hence, the Junior Advisory Committee does not approve the use of substitute showmen except in extreme cases. If a youth is injured or seriously ill at the time of the show or is involved in another activity with a non-flexible schedule at which their presence is mandatory, the youth may submit an application for a substitute showman. The substitute showman must be a Holstein junior member and approved in advance of the show by the advisory committee.

7. Production award - There will be one for top milk based on 305 day or less actual records. The award will be based on records sent in with the initial entry. If an animal is substituted or does not qualify for the 4-H or FFA show, production information must be submitted to Jeff Hammerand and will be accepted until the start

Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy

The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed. from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy

The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring.

The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship.

It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition.

At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue.

The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting.

It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable.

THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES ARE A VIOLATION OF IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SHOW RING POLICY

1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown.

2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally:

a. with and irritant or counter-irritant,

b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping”

c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag)

3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other

similar apparatus to fill the rumen.

b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline.

4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters

5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails)

6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/ substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches.

7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics.

8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation.

MONITORING AND ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES FOR IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION (IHA) SHOW RING POLICY

District Shows

1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted.

State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair

1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him.

2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary.

State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair

1. When hosting the State Show not held with the Iowa State Fair, the district is responsible for all management of the show including working with the Ethics Committee to enforce the IHA Show Ring Policy.

2. An Ethics Committee will be formed for the State Show. It shall consist of three people. One person will be from the IHA Show Committee and the other two will be from the host district.

3. The Ethics Committee will observe activities prior to and during the show and along with show management, receive complaints of alleged violations.

4. Any complaints of suspected violations must be made before the conclusion of the show.

5. The Ethics Committee or it’s designates has the authority to perform and review results of the following:

a. An ultrasound examination of the udder prior to milk out

b. Milk out of any individual cow

c. Collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids

d. Use of any other non lethal technology that may be useful in determining violations

e. Delivery for the purpose of inspection or laboratory analysis, at any time, of any hypodermic needles, syringes, swabs, cloths, other devices, dispensers, samples of

medicines, or other preparations in any form, in possession or control of the exhibitor, fitter, agents or persons acting on behalf of the exhibitor.

f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches.

6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred.

7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/ her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/ her animals.

8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee.

9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination.

10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them.

11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting.

12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges.

13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties.

14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing.

15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA.

16. Under the Rules of the Show, the exhibitor agrees as final and to abide by any decisions of IHA in regards to violations of the IHA Show Ring Policy and resulting penalties.

Penalties for Violations of IHA Show Ring Policy

1. 1st Offense - minimum of receiving a letter of reprimand to a maximum of one year suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), fitter(s), and/or other representatives, either individually or combination thereof from all IHA state sponsored shows.

15 June 2023 Iowa Holstein Herald

The Iowa Holstein Association is proud to support the candidacy of Trent Henkes for an at-large position on the Holstein Association USA Board of Directors. We know that Trent would be a well versed, honest representative for the entire membership.

Trent’s strong leadership skills are evidenced by the positions he has held in the Iowa Holstein Association, as well as other dairy related organizations. He served the Iowa Association as president, vice president, board member, committee chair and vice-chair of the National Holstein Convention held in Dubuque, Iowa in 2014. Trent has been elected numerous times as a delegate to the Holstein Association USA National Convention. Locally Trent has been very active within his county and district Holstein Associations and dairy promotion. He and his family are responsible for inspiring many youth to get involved in dairy activities in Clayton County and beyond through the county Share-aHeifer program. Trent has been a positive advocate for 4-Hers, serving as dairy judging coach for several years and has officiated many contests. His teams are always respected, not only for their winnings but also for their sportsmanship.

Trent and son, Matt, milk 65 registered Holsteins and 10 Registered Milking Shorthorns on their family farm in northeast Iowa. The all registered, 95% homebred herd currently boosts the highest BAA in Iowa in 2022 at 111.7% with 29 EX 25 VG 2 GP. Over the years, Trent has bred 177 Excellents, 23 DOM, 21 GMD and has been a PBR herd for 22 years and a PGA herd for 18 years.

Henkeseen Holsteins was a pilot herd for the Complete Program and feels that it has helped develop quality animals for the herd and for merchandising, resulting in being able to consign high quality animals for auctions, as well as doing very well in the local, district, state, and national shows. Trent has sold over 50 bulls into AI and has marketed embryos worldwide, along with selling females and bulls to other dairymen. He has taken advantage of Marketplace Sires and has had daughters calve from these bulls.

Trent is a very futuristic open-minded individual who will work diligently to ensure that Holstein USA continues to provide viable and innovative services and programs for all of its members whether it’s the 50 cow, 500 cow or 10,000 cow dairy. He will work to ensure all voices are heard and new ideas and concepts are pursued to benefit all members regardless of herd size. We are confident that if elected, Trent would serve with integrity, give the necessary time and be an asset to the Holstein Association USA Board of Directors.
