Hello Iowa Holstein Friends,
This may possibly be one of my favorite times of the year. Nature has come back to life. As we drive the rural roads, we see the beginning of everyone’s spring planting. The crops are extending a canopy over the ground and the smell of the freshly cut alfalfa is uniquely amazing. The cattle in the pastures completes the landscape and makes you take a second glance.
Thanks to district 8 for hosting The State Holstein Convention. Be sure to read the profiles of this year’s award winners. Congratulation to each of them. I was totally surprised, honored and grateful to receive The Hall of Fame Award. Thank you to Brynlee Volker, our last Holstein Princess for all your service to our Assoc. and Good Luck with your next endeavors! Congratulations to our new Iowa Holstein Princess, Kaitlyn Besler! Contact her if you need her assistance with dairy events. Special thanks to Myron Rediske for the entertainment!
Thanks to Courtney Sales for managing the auction this year at the Iowa Spring Holstein Sale. We had some high-quality cattle and they sold well. Thank you to Blake Courtney for running the successful raffle again this year! We netted just under $10.000. Congratulations to the winners!
The bus trip took us to northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, with an overnight stay at Lake Geneva, Wi. The wet cool weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of our group. Special thanks to all seven of the dairy farms for welcoming us on two less than ideal days. We were able to see some tremendous cattle and dairy facilities!
Safe travels to those who will be attending the National Holstein Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, and good luck to the Junior Contestants!
Good luck to all exhibitors as you prepare for the county fairs, district shows and The Iowa State Holstein Show, which will be held in Des Moines during The Iowa State Fair on August 9th and 10th.
The Iowa Holstein Picnic will be at a centralized location for most, as we travel just north of Petersburg to KCCK Genetics. Tom and Sara, Kaleb, Cole and Carter Kruse will be hosting this event on August 24th. It should be a great destination! We will also be having our State and District Board meetings there, as usual.
Our Granddaughter, Cambrie Wessel turned her reign as Clayton County Little Miss Squirt over to her younger sister, Cagney Wessel last month. We feel honored to escort her, as well, to the Clayton County Parades and other dairy events. It is very encouraging to see the milk and cheese market finally creeping up. Hopefully, the prices will be sustained with the shortage of dairy replacements in the country. See all of you at the shows!
Your President, Walt Wessel

Rick Reuter Started farming in 1975 in a partnership with his parents milking 80 cows and farming 260 acres of corn and hay. In 1978, purchased farm and balance of cows and heifers. Started to purchase a few registered Holsteins. In 1991, installed a TMR mixer and started milking 3 times a day with just family for labor. By 1993, was the first herd in Iowa to exceed a herd average of 30,000 lbs. of milk.
In 1997, decided to expand and build a 240 free stall barn and double 8 parlor. In 2004, put in a double 12 parlor and added on both ends of the free stall barn. From 2009 thru 2018, added more free stall barns, heifer barns, calf barns, feed and manure storage. Cows and heifers are bedded with sand. Cows produce between 105 to 110 lbs. of milk a day. There is currently 920 cows and 600 heifers. Corn silage, corn and some hay grown on 1200 acres. Breeding program has always focused on functional type and milk production. Family has always enjoyed showing and merchandising, and hosting tours over the years to many schools, colleges, National Holstein Convention, Iowa State Holstein Picnic and international guests. Member of National Holstein Association, Iowa Holstein Association and Dubuque County Dairy Association. Few favorites: Angella EX94, in1993, was Grand Champion at the Iowa State Holstein Show and Iowa Holstein Junior Show. Cassidy, EX91, sold many embryos, sent numerous bulls to A-I. Over 135 calves born in USA. Favorite cow family was the Bailey family,1st EX 95 homebred cow, Bailey was Grand Champion of the 2011 Iowa State Holstein Show at the Iowa State Fair. Her daughter, Beauty, EX 95 2nd generation homebred 95 and Beauty’s daughter Taylor, EX 94. These 3 cows produced many high scoring and high producing offspring, still large part of the herd today.
December 2021, decided it was time to turn over Reuter Dairy, Inc. to the next generation, so son Dan purchased. Enjoys family time with wife, Elaine and family. Dan, Jill, Colin, Ally, Noah and Shay Reuter, Jeff, Sarah, Carley, Drew and Brynn Kintzle, Jamie, Tricia, Cami and Jaxon Manderscheid, Stephen, Dawn and Mckoy Mausser and Dana Stendel. Greatest joy is to see everyone working together chopping silage, pumping manure, covering bunkers and working with the cows and heifers. So fun watching grandkids running equipment when just a few years ago they where riding along. Thanks to the Holstein cow for this ride in life! Congradulations to Rick Rueter on being name Master Breeder.
From a young age, this young man was involved in his uncles’ farm, where he learned about the ins and outs of dairy farming and this is what sparked his interest for genetics. The passion for the Holstein breed was in his blood, in about the 6th grade he took over the responsibility of preg checking and began memorizing registration numbers and pedigrees, this passion only grew with age.
He was active in the Junior Holstein Association, attending conventions, participating in many youth events and especially enjoyed competing in the show ring. These experiences led him to Iowa State University where he majored in Dairy Science. His time spent at ISU along with his upbringing just confirmed to him that his passion was Holstein genetics and he figured out how to turn that into a successful career.
While in college he started to build his herd of Registered Holsteins by investing in heifers who were backed by multiple generations of excellent or very good dams, at the same time genomics was starting to hit the industry and he embraced this technology very quickly. This adaptation led this young man to invest in numerous genetic females and he started his own IVF and ET Program. Through the success of his own breeding program, he began to assist other dairymen in achieving their own genetic goals through tailored IVF and ET programs. This career path allowed him to partner in some of the most breed leading cows and bulls the Registered Holstein breed has seen. In 2008 he became part of Apple Partners who purchased Apple, the Red & White cow who went on to completely change the landscape of the Red & White breed. Then in 2013 he became part of the syndicate that purchased OCD Robust Delicious, one of the most influential cows of the genomic era. His breeding philosophy led to bulls like Delta, who has over 58,000 daughters in his proof alone, not to mention all of Delta’s sons who have gone on to impact the breed like the notable Delta-Lambda. In 2014 he started a partnership with some family members and founded Genosource, now a 4,000 cow milking farm. The breeding program he implemented for GenoSource has successfully created some of the best international donor dams of the industry, creating cows who are efficient and profitable with great longevity and are the kind you want to see in your parlor, no matter what operation you are milking in. From this program, Genosource has placed many bulls into AI, assisting other dairymen from around the globe achieve their own genetic and herd goals.
Most recently, the breeding philosophy of this award recipient went on to create Genosource Captain, the current #1 TPI Sire on Holstein USA’s Top 100 International TPI Bulls list which he has now held for 4 consecutive genetic evaluations in a row.
This year’s Iowa Holstein Association’s Young Breeder Award is awarded to Tim Rauen.
Ryan grew up on a farm south of Castalia and he has never strayed far from his roots. He currently is in partnership with his parents, John & Peggy on a 220-cow dairy. The herd is comprised of mostly Holsteins, but you can find all 7 breeds in their herd as the family enjoys showing cattle throughout Iowa. The herd is milked in a double 9 parabone parlor and housed in 2 freestall barns. The Holsteins RHA is29800M. 1210F, 960P on 2x a day milking. One of Ryan’s favorite cows is Granite Road Chief Turtle, a homebred Excellent cow that is also a show cow, winning Supreme Champion at Big 4 Fair and Reserve Grand at the Fayette County Fair in 2022. Ryan believes that longevity is the key to a successful herd.
Growing up, Ryan was active in 4-H, FFA and sports. He enjoyed showing cattle since the age of 2, when he was in the inaugural PeeWee Dairy Show at the Winneshiek County Fair. Ryan went on to win numerous Showmanship contests during his showing career. Ryan was a member of the Iowa FFA Dairy Judging team that competed at National. In college Dave Lawstuen named him the “Cow Man”, for his intuition with the dairy cattle. Ryan would much rather be in the barn than the classroom at college.
Ryan met his wife Brianne while they were attending NICC Dairy Management Course. Afte working for various farmers they made the decision to return to the family farm.
Their children Dillion, Blake & Chloe have kept them busy and active in 4-H, FFA, wrestling, football, and showing cattle. Ryan is responsible for the dairy herd and the heifers over 6 months of age. Brianne works at Captive Aire in West Union and helps out at the farm as much as possible. Dillion is a Freshman at South Dakota State University studying Ag Finance with a minor in Dairy Science. Blake is a Sophomore at North Fayette Valley and Chloe is a 7th grader at NFV. The family is active in the Bethany Lutheran Church, 4-H, NFV FFA and sports. Ryan is proud of his family and enjoys watching them succeed in their events.
Mark Kerndt graduated from Iowa State with a Dairy Science degree in 1983. Throughout the 1980's and 1990's Mark and his father Leslie developed Kerndtway Holsteins. One of their foundation cows was purchased at the Albien Massman Dispersal south of Ossian. They sold numerous bulls into A.I. services and embryos worldwide.
In Juen of 1999, the Kerndtway Disperal was topped by the Richard Lomen purchase of Kerndtway Joly Daisy. She went on to be nominates All-American and was 3rd place at the World Dairy Expo.
Mark was then employed as a herdsman at the start up of the Northeast Iowa Community College Dairy Center in Calmar, Iowa. Mark was instrumental in the acquistion and development of the Dairy Center's orginal herd. Mark then worked as a herdsman for Regancrest Holsteins.
In 2008, he and Mark Butz went into partnership of Premeir Genetics. Many calling card cow families were developed in this partnership. On May 22, 2010 the herd was dispersed at a public auction.
Mark worked as Director of Marketing for Prairie/Select Sire from 2010-2015. He was then hired by Select Sires Inc. as a Sire Analyst from 2015-2019. He was promoted to being the director of the ART program at Select Sires where he is now working in that capicity today.
Perhaps, most important to our associaion was the six years that he was on the National Holstein Board of Directors representing us as memebers. His thoughtfulness and leadership has had great influence on the entire Holstein Association.
Congradulations to Mark on a well earned-Award!

The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed.
from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy
The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring.
The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship.
It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition.
At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue.
The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting.
It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable.
THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES ARE A VIOLATION OF IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SHOW RING POLICY
1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown.
2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally:
a. with and irritant or counter-irritant,
b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping”
c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag)
3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other
similar apparatus to fill the rumen.
b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline.
4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters
5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails)
6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/ substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches.
7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics.
8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation.
District Shows
1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted.
State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair
1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him.

f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches.
6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred.
7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/ her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/ her animals.
8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee.
9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination.
10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them.
11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting.
12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges.
