President’s Perspective As I take a moment out of my busy fall day I think of all the Holstein activities that have kept everyone busy this summer. Summer started out with a large delegation from Iowa attending the National Holstein Convention in Seattle, WA. Our Juniors did very well in their contests and continued the tradition of - Iowa being a force to be reckoned with!!! Congratulations to all the participants on an outstanding job. It was a fun and unique place to visit with lots of interesting tour stops! District 1 hosted a very successful State Holstein Show with a combined total of almost 350 head exhibited in the open and junior shows. The quality from top to bottom in each class was one of the best I’ve seen. The show committee is to be commended for doing an excellent job and donating countless hours of their time to ensure a successful show for everyone. Blodgett Communications also did a fantastic job covering the show on social media. We can never have too much positive publicity for the industry. Our Holstein membership represented us well in the many shows held throughout the summer, including the county fairs, state fair, Youth Classic and Cattle Congress. Congratulations to all the exhibitors, class winners and showmanship honorees. Our State Picnic was very well attended, with over 250 people enjoying beautiful state of the art facilities, great cows, a delicious lunch, and Holstein fellowship. Our hosts the Stempfles, Scotts, and Mills deserve a huge thank you for their hospitality. We also had excellent representation at our state committee meetings that afternoon. Lots of new ideas were discussed and are being put into motion through our committees. I encourage everyone to become and active committee member or to pass any new ideas or suggestions you have to the respective committees. I’d like to remind our membership that we need to continue promoting and advertising the Holstein Cow! Anyone is welcome to post their classification or sale results on our Facebook page or other social media sites. Simply send a message to Paula via email, text, or personal message her and she will post it for you. All of us need to continue promoting every day and creating a positive image for the dairy industry. Have a safe and successful fall harvest and take time to enjoy the fall season! Trent Henkes

2017 Iowa Holstein Princess Greetings to everyone this fall season! I can’t believe I’ve already been your Iowa Holstein Princess for 7 months! I’ve had some awesome experiences while handing out ribbons at district shows, the Iowa State show and the Iowa State Fair. One of my favorite activities was handing out white milk and chocolate milk to RAGBRAI riders in eastern Iowa. It was a beautiful day and such a great opportunity to teach all types of consumers about our top quality products and answer many questions. I was amazed by the stories of where all of the riders came from and why they choose to ride all across our beautiful state on a bike! I also competed in the Iowa Dairy Princess contest in early August. I was able to practice my public speaking and interviewing skills in addition to networking and meeting new friends that will last forever! The most useful part of the contest was not even the contest itself, but the ambassador training that was held to help dairy promoters get the message about in an effective and positive manner. That will be extremely helpful while representing your association for the remainder of my reign as well in my future career in agriculture and dairy! I wish the best of luck to Iowa Dairy Princess Rachel Grober and Alternate Iowa Dairy Princess Josie Buddenburg! I am always here to help anyone out with functions (sales, sales, promotions) so feel free to contact me at 712-480-0741 or jennac@iastate.edu. World Dairy Expo is right around the corner and I know many of you are preparing for the competition or even just to attend the shows and exposition. I would like to wish everyone safe travels to Wisconsin. Good luck in the show ring and have a dairy good time! Yours in dairy, Jenna Chapman

Name: Trent Westhoff Hometown: Dyersville, Iowa High School: Beckman Catholic High School Class Size: 79 Farm Name: Westhoff Farms Major: Animal Science Why did you decide to attend ISU? Iowa State offers their students endless opportunities. I was able to experience this first hand from the multiple FFA events and college visits I attended on campus throughout high school. Talking with past ISU students reassured my decision as they had nothing but good things to say. On each visit, Ames and Iowa State a felt like home to me. In addition, the programs and professors offered in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences rank among the best in the world so I was confident in my decision. What has been your favorite course? I have had many awesome classes already. Some of my favorites were animal anatomy lab, embryo transfer class, animal nutrition, and my species classes in beef, swine, and dairy. I look forward to some of my higher level classes to come as well. What are your future career goals? My goal after graduation is to remain active in the dairy industry through a career in nutrition or animal health.

Obituary
Shirley Susan (Eike) Lyons, 62, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, after a courageous battle with cancer. Services were held on Saturday, July 22, 2017, St. Mary Catholic Church, Manchester. Shirley was born June 1, 1955, the daughter of LaVerne and Agnes (Egloff) Eike, in Manchester, Iowa. When she was little, she spent many days with her cousins. They were together many Sundays. She attended St. Mary’s School through eighth grade, graduating from West Delaware High School in 1974. On September 10, 1977, Shirley married the love of her life, Dennis Lyons, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. The greatest joy of her life was when they adopted their son, Caleb, in 1998. She loved watching him grow and become an outstanding young man. Shirley lived all but two years of her life in the same home. In the 1980’s she loved being with friends and attended many fun weddings of family and friends. She started working at the Delaware County Conservation in 1988. She loved working there until her retirement in November 2016. In the 1990’s they started country dancing and made many new friends. Shirley and Dennis enjoyed parading antique tractors all over northeast Iowa, along with her parents. They purchased a 1967 Chevy Camaro in 2005, attending many car shows, meeting many more wonderful people. They also purchased a camper and met even more wonderful people. Shirley loved taking pictures to record her memories over the years. Shirley and Dennis were avid Hawkeye fans, having season tickets to Iowa football. Shirley was active in many community events. She was a 4-H leader and decorated the booth for the Prairie Livestock. One of her proudest moments was when Caleb and Blake Deutmeyer‘s educational presentation went to the state fair and received the highest honor. She helped organize the KC Banquet and also taught organ lessons for many years. During the last year, when she felt well, Shirley colored many pictures in adult coloring books friends brought for her. Her last few months, she loved watching the birds at the feeders and bird bath outside their living room window. Shirley loved attending the graduations and weddings of their many nieces and nephews. She is the godmother of Jody Lahr, Carly Steere, Tucker Lyons, and Robert Robinson. Shirley is survived by her husband, Dennis; son, Caleb; mother-in-law, Mildred Lyons; brothers and sisters-in-law, Diane (Larry) Geisler, Marcia (Rusty) Hansen, Gloria (Len) Swestka, Stanley Lyons, Nancy (Gary) Sacquitne, Scott Lyons, Becky (Clarence) Winkler, Doug (Lynnette) Lyons, David (Nancy) Lyons, Brian (Val) Lyons, and many nieces and nephews. Obituary
William W. Wunder, 87, of Ames, died on June 18, 2017, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services were held on Sunday, July 9, at the Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames. Bill was born June 4, 1930, on the family farm near Lake Park to Herman Wunder and Elizabeth (Sell) Wunder. The second child and the oldest of four boys, Bill always loved the farm. As a young teen he took a particular interest in increasing the family dairy herd’s productivity so that in a few years they had one of the best producing Holstein herds in Dickinson County. After graduating from Lake Park High School in 1947, Bill continued helping on the farm. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952, serving as company clerk of the No. 558 Amphibious Truck Unit in Incheon, Korea. Bill used the GI Bill to attend Iowa State College in 1954. While a student, Bill was on the dairy judging team and did so well academically, his professors encouraged him to consider graduate school. He also sang in the Iowa State Singers and the Alumni Hall men’s quartet, and was active in Westminster Fellowship at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, where he made lifelong friends and met his bride, Beth Robie. Bill graduated in 1958 after helping to win the Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Team National Contest that fall. He returned to his dream of dairy farming but the farm economy was poor, so he followed his professor’s’ advice and applied to graduate schools. On March 13, 1960, Bill and Beth Robie were married at United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, and then headed to East Lansing where Bill began graduate work in dairy science at Michigan State. After completing his doctorate degree in 1967, the family moved to Bowling Green, Ky., where Bill was a dairy specialist with University of Kentucky Extension. In 1968, Bill began as assistant professor of Dairy Science at Iowa State University. Bill was proudest of the relationships he
built with students through teaching, academic advising, the Dairy Science Club and coaching the dairy judging team. Coaching included travel to dairy farms and contests, allowing him to build relationships with students and dairy farmers. In 1984, he was recognized with an award for outstanding academic advisor. Bill also oversaw the ISU Dairy Farm’s breeding program, greatly improving the herd average over the years. He retired in 1997 as full professor. Family came first for Bill, and he was a wonderful father to Bob, Michael and Lori, serving as 4-H leader, helping with paper routes, and supporting their many other activities. Summer vacations were spent in their pop-up camper exploring national and state parks. His five grandchildren were his delight and he was always willing to read a book or play a game. Collegiate Presbyterian Church was an important part of Bill’s life; he served as elder, deacon, youth group leader and tenor in the choir. In retirement, Bill joined Golden Kiwanis, serving as president and singing with the Golden K Singers. In 1999, Bill survived an aortic aneurysm and viewed the last nineteen years as a gift, enjoying children’s marriages, grandchildren and many wonderful trips with family and friends. His garden is the envy of the neighborhood, especially the leeks. He loved reading and learning new things. He was a hard worker and a loving, caring, gentle man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Beth; his children, Bob (Pam Trowbridge) Wunder, of Newark, Del., and Michael (Jennifer Maney), of Portland, Ore.; daughter Lori (Jim Bonewald) Wunder, of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Tommy Wunder and Kevin Wunder, of Newark, Del.; Ellie Maney Wunder and Cyrus Maney Wunder, of Portland, Ore., and Teddy Bonewald, of Mount Vernon; two brothers, Kedric Wunder, of Lake Park, and Merrill (Joann) Wunder, of Roseville, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce Jensen; and brother, Dennis Wunder.
