President’s Perspective As the record setting fall harvest winds down we look forward to the Holiday season and a new year. With the New Year brings new ideas and activities for our Iowa Holstein enthusiasts. At our fall board meeting plans were put into place to revamp and invigorate our state spring sale. We have decided to manage the sale ourselves as an association and to include a calf raffle. Proceeds from the raffle will help cover sale costs and well as a portion going directly to our Iowa Junior Association. The grand prize for the raffle will be choice of four calves from Farnear Holsteins, Hawkeye Holsteins, Morningview Holsteins and Regancrest or $2500.00 cash. There will also be several premium prizes awarded. Only 200 tickets will be sold and they can be purchased from any state board member for $100 each. Still not done with your Christmas shopping? Here’s an awesome present for anyone on your shopping list!!! If anyone has a consignment for the sale, please contact Kyle Demmer at 563.451.5376 or someone from the sale committee. Don’t wait for someone to contact you be proactive and make the call to get your animals consigned. Everyone needs to do their part to help make our sale a success. This is also the season for annual meetings and conventions. Do your part as an active Iowa Holstein member and attend your District annual meeting and our state convention. I’d like to encourage all Iowa Juniors to attend the State Junior Convention on December 27-28 at the Best Rest Inn, West Union. The kids always have a great time at this event. Our state convention is set for February 24th in Manchester at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. This year’s convention will also be the location for the 2018 National Winter Update Meeting . This an excellent opportunity to learn more about Holstein Association USA along with being able to visit with staff from the National Office. Watch for more information about the convention coming in the mail! Remember the Holiday season is a great time to promote dairy! Serve lots of cheese, milk and any other dairy products at your holiday gatherings and include them as gifts! Wishing everyone a Happy Holidays and a Great New Year! Trent

2017 Iowa Holstein Princess Greetings, As we enter late fall and the weather turns colder, I encourage you to take the time to reflect over the past year. We all have struggles and triumphs in farming. During this time of Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday, I aim to focus on the triumphs. I look back to last February as an incredible opportunity was given to me when I became the Iowa Holstein Princess. My family and I experienced many rewards in the show ring and I was able to serve the industry as an ambassador in many ways. Some days it’s hard to stay on top of the assignments, exams, meetings, community service and social life of a college student. I take these moments to think about how hard farm families are working to produce food for America. We can all relate to the breakdowns, long hours, hard work, low prices and fight against the negative publicity that dairy farming has gotten. My purpose has become a voice for the all farm families and especially dairy. My joys in life come from the long days and hard work. In every negative, there is a positive. I say a prayer for all the Holstein breeders to give thanks for strong family ties and tradition and a blessed Christmas holiday. May you all enjoy time with your families and the girls in the barn! Warm regards, Jenna Chapman

Name: Bridget Saxton Hometown: Lake Mills, Iowa High School: Lake Mills Community School Class Size: 50 Farm Name: Larcrest Holsteins Major: Dairy Science Technology & Large Animal Vet Tech Why did I decide to go to NICC? I chose to attend NICC because it is one of very few 2-year dairy science programs with more hands-on learning opportunities than other colleges. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable college experience so far has been attending state and national PAS. These competitions were so much fun and they taught me a lot. I can’t wait to compete again this year! What has been my favorite course? My favorite courses have been Animal Health and Animal Reproduction. I learned a crazy amount of useful knowledge in a very short amount of time, and I’d take them all over again in a heartbeat. What are my future career goals? After graduating from college with degrees in dairy science technology and large animal vet tech, I hope to eventually own a custom heifer raising business. Caring for calves and heifers has always been my passion, and I can’t think of anything better than being able to turn that passion into my career.

Why did you decide to attend ISU? Showing cows in 4-H and FFA and going to judging contests raised my interest in wanting to pursue a secondary education in dairy science. I talked to several people who went to Iowa State and majored in Dairy Science and heard lots of good things about the program. Iowa State is also one of the most affordable 4-year colleges in the area, so that helped with my final decision. What has been your most memorable college experience? This fall my brothers and I went to the Iowa vs. Iowa State football game. My brothers had never been to a college football game before. It was one of the most exciting football games I had ever seen even though Iowa State lost. What has been your favorite course? My favorite class so far has been Dairy Cattle Science. I like learning about the science behind why we do certain practices on the farm and learning completely new concepts. I also like getting to go to the Iowa State Dairy Farm to work with the animals and apply the classroom material to the real world. What are your future career goals? After graduation, I would like to work as a nutritionist or a dairy consultant and help farmers reach their goals. I’m not sure about going to graduate school yet. Eventually I would like to get back into farming.

Greetings Juniors! Congratulations to all on another successful year! The Juniors performed exceptionally well at the National Convention in Washington, both district and state shows, judging contests, and the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo. We have a lot to be proud of! Thank you to everyone; the Officer Team, the Junior Advisory Chairs, family, friends, and all Iowa Junior Holstein enthusiasts for their hard work and dedication this past year to help making our youth programs a continual success. Another special thank you to all of our generous trophy sponsors this summer, the support is greatly appreciated by our Junior Association! This year at the state show, Juniors were awarded Steel Cow paintings for Junior All-Iowa, and Reserve Junior All-Iowa as well as Champions. To close what has been an exciting year, it is my pleasure to extend you all an invitation to the Iowa Junior Holstein Convention! This year our Junior Convention will be held at the Best Rest Inn in West Union Iowa. Note the location change! As an officer team, we decided that host the convention in West Union due to the heavy involvement in the area. Futurity Challenge Entries Due February 1, 2018

How do I enter?  • Complete the Futurity Form in Excel available at www.iowaholsteins.org and email it to the Futurity secretary with appropriate fees by February 1, 2018. A pdf form will also be available online if you don’t have access to Excel. Eligible animals are those registered Holstein females born September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017. The initial fee is low to encourage you to enter several calves. You can always drop payment at subsequent deadlines. What about heifers already entered? • Entries made last year for the 2018 and 2019 Futurities will need to be updated. The Futurity Secretary will mail your form to you. Simply make payments on those animals you wish to re-enter, crossing out any you wish to drop. These entries are also due February 1, 2018. What kind of calves should be entered? • Your show calves that are already halter broke. Is your calf bred to have a good udder? Enter her! • Your fancy calf, out of a good cow, that was just the wrong age for the calf class. Enter her! • Last summer's babies. They may show as first lactation 3-Year-Olds, but that just might be to their advantage. Enter them! • The calf you plan to sell in the Iowa Spring Sale. A $2 entry may reap bigger dividends at the sale. Enter that calf! • Any calf you might sell as a show calf or junior project calf. You pay the first entry and if the buyer wants to keep up the entries they may. It is the seller's responsibility to inform the buyer of the animal's eligibility, and the buyer's responsibility to submit subsequent fees. Attention Junior Members • To be eligible for JUNIOR BRED AND OWNED awards for future Futurities your name must be listed on the animal's registration paper as the BREEDER. The Challenge • During the next year, you are breeding your cows and heifers for calves that will be eligible for Futurities in 2021 and 2022. Think about the bulls you are using. Think about the cow that is the foundation. Can you breed the futurity winner? Great cows are usually no accident! Have a plan, carry it out and let us all evaluate the results. See you at the show!

Iowa Holstein Futurity • Matt Henkes, Secretary 18467 165th St, Luana, IA 52156 • 563-880-8614 henkesm91@gmail.com or the cash prize will be awarded. 2017 Iowa Holstein Futurity

National Directors’ Report

Hello from your Holstein USA Board of Directors, After a busy fall with some great shows, we settle into preparations for winter. We trust that harvest was productive and safe. With winter comes planning for a new year. The same is true with your Holstein Association and planning is underway for the many activities scheduled for 2018. The delegate election process is underway for the 2018 National Convention in Traverse City, MI. Be sure to mark your ballot for delegate and plan to attend the convention. The Michigan Holstein Association has a fun and interesting program planned. We would love to see you there. HAUSA committee activities have begun to prepare for 2018. Committees play a big role in bringing grass root ideas to the board. Their input guides the classification program, weightings in the TPI Formula and show ring policy. Committees also guide junior activities, legislative and industry involvement and our international marketing emphasis. The 2018 National Winter Update Meeting will be held in the Midwest this year. It will be held in conjunction with the Iowa Holstein Association annual meeting February 24, 2018 in Manchester, IA. It is a great opportunity to get a current update on association activities and give input to your leadership. The Holstein board continues to plan for the future. As the dairy industry continues to change, the HAUSA board is working to prepare and position the association to lead in information availability, genetic improvement and industry issues. We are honored to serve on the Holstein board. Feel free to call with any concerns or questions you might have.

FYI

Recently you should have received information to complete your Association membership for 2018. The deadline is once again February 1. Remember there is a cap on the cow fee at $200. The Iowa Holstein Herald is sent to all adult members as a part of their membership fee. Membership in the Iowa Holstein Auxiliary is only $5.00. The Auxiliary awards scholarships to our youth, presents the Hall of Fame Award each year, sponsors and manages the Holstein Princess Contest, offers assistance by decorating the sale ring for state sales and supports Association activities throughout the year. We would encourage your membership. Junior membership fees are now $5.00, which does not include a subscription to the Iowa Holstein Herald. Juniors may subscribe for their own copy for $10.00 per year. Please return the pre-labeled card, making any changes directly on the card. Please share your email address if you have one. It is certainly an economical way to communicate and we are using it more each year. A pre-addressed envelope has been included in the membership envelope. Please use it to return your completed membership card and check to Iowa Holstein Association, 12686 U Ave, Sumner, IA 50674. District Meetings - A schedule of these meetings is printed on page 4, please make an effort to attend. Your input is needed. The fellowship is great and food is always available. The district directors will be responsible for presenting the state association information at their own district meetings. We will be providing them with any necessary information.
