President’s Perspective As I write my first President’s message I immediately think of all the Holstein activities we have coming up during this busy time of year. The National Convention will be June 27 – July 1 in Bellevue, Washington. I’d like to wish all the Iowa Juniors that will be competing in contests the best of luck. Our association is very proud of our strong Junior membership and I know we will be well represented in Washington! Our Iowa delegates who will be representing you at the National Convention will be Sheri Regan-Danhof, Dan Moon, Kathleen Scott, and myself. If you have any comments or concerns about our national association please let any one of us know. Summertime is also show season with county fairs, district shows, state show and state fair all coming up. The State Show will be held in West Union on July 18 and 19 in conjunction with the District 1 Show and we look forward to a big turnout. The show committee has worked hard making plans to ensure a great show. We also welcome anyone to come and watch the shows and enjoy the fellowship. I hope to see everyone at the state picnic which is scheduled for August 26 at Stempfle Holsteins, Maynard and Scottmore Holsteins, Westgate. Committee meetings and the Board meeting will be held that day as well. A strong association is developed from strong committees. This is everyone’s chance to contribute to the success of our association’s future. I look forward to serving you as President. If anyone has any ideas or concerns please contact me. The Executive Committee is currently working on ways to improve our state sale. We are planning a meeting Monday night, July 17th, of state show week to discuss future plans for the state sale. Everyone is welcome. Any suggestions can be expressed at that meeting or to any member of the Executive Committee at any time. Hope everyone enjoys their summer and please take the time to participate in all these activities. It a great chance to visit with fellow Holstein enthusiasts, be involved, get new ideas and take a little time off from the daily grind to enjoy life!

2017 Iowa Holstein Princess Hello Dairy Friends! I am Jenna Chapman your 2017 Iowa Holstein Princess! I was excited to be crowned the ambassador of the Holstein breed for Iowa in February of this year. Last year I also helped in representing the Holstein breed as an alternate with Sally Hamlet and Jessica Stempfle. This year I am the sole princess and am looking forward to serving you! By now most of you have your crops in the ground and are at least thinking about what you may want to show at the events coming up this summer! I can’t wait to help out whenever I can by handing out ribbons and talking to anyone I can about how great our dairy products are. Recently, I had the honor of being able to help out the Courtney family by handling sales slips at their dispersal. It’s been fun getting to know the families that my parents have talked so highly of over many years. The next generation has a lot to learn from these knowledgeable dairy experts! Currently I am thee Agronomy intern at the local cooperative and taking a summer class at the community college while on break from Iowa State University. This summer I will be participating in the Iowa Dairy Princess competition at the Iowa State Fair. I look forward to your support and great times to be had this year. Why did you decide to attend NICC? I decided to attend NICC because of its advancement in technology compared to other colleges I visited. I admired the three different types of milking styles being used which are parallel, herringbone, and robotic. I also liked the small sized classes and the courses that were available. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable college experience was winning the World Dairy Expo Judging Contest and placing 3rd overall individual. What has been your favorite course? I don’t have a specific favorite course, but I did enjoy my animal health lab and animal reproduction lab. In these courses I got to work hands on with dairy animals at the Dairy Foundation. What are your future career goals? My future career goals are to work for a company promoting agriculture, such as Midwest Dairy Association. I want to continue my passion with dairy in promotions and communications.

Rules & Regulations for the 2017 Iowa Holstein Association Shows A. Rules Applying to District and State Holstein Shows: 1. Each exhibitor must be a current member or junior member of the Iowa Holstein Association. 2. a. All animals must have a minimum of 87% Registered Holstein Ancestry (RHA). Ownership shall be established by the name listed on the registration certificate or by presentation of the certificate along with a signed and completed transfer and fee which is to be retained by show management to be forwarded to the national office. b. For animals purchased shortly before a show, the transfer must be submitted with the paper prior to the show and the show chairman/clerk will take possession of the transfer to assure that the transfer is carried out. If the cow is in transfer, clarification from National must be known. 3. Iowa state health rules and regulations must be observed. Health papers and registration certificates must accompany the animals, and be provided to show management for checking prior to one hour before the starting time of the show. 4. The point system for determining Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor Awards shall be as follows: A: Points for Junior Animals B: Points for Senior Animals Placing: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A: 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 B: 20 18 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 5. The Premier Breeder Award is presented to the breeder of no more than 6 animals all shown in the single classes which total the most points. No entry is required and winner need not be an exhibitor at the show nor the owner of any of the point-winning animals. a. Breeder Defined: The owner of the dam at the time of service shall be considered the breeder of the animals. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family, and where the herd is one unit, and everyone is using the same prefix, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Otherwise, when animals are bred in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique breeder. 6. The Premier Exhibitor Award is presented to the exhibitor of no more than 6 animals all shown in the single classes which total the most points. No entry is required. a. Exhibitor Defined: The Exhibitor must be the owner. In case a herd is registered or bred in the names of different members of a family, residing on one farm or breeding establishment and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as a single exhibitor for all group classes. However, members of one family where cattle are not housed as one unit, will not be considered as a single exhibitor. Any partnership animal is a separate exhibitor with the exception of family partnerships. 7. Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show (State Open Show Only) - The same rules apply as listed above for Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. Junior Heifer Calves through Senior Yearlings (not in milk) will be eligible for points 14 June 2017 Iowa Holstein Herald
for these awards. The animals may also be eligible for Overall Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. 8. Bred and Owned Awards will be given in classes 11-15 and 17-20 for the highest placing animal bred and owned by exhibitor as determined by the certificate of registry. Syndicated animals and partnerships other than within family do not qualify for the bred and owned class awards. 9. All exhibitors shall adhere to the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. The agreement to adhere to this policy on the entry form must be signed to be an eligible entry. B. Special Rules Applying to Iowa District Holstein Shows: 1. Partnership cattle may be shown in any district but in only one district show in any given season. 2. Every District Show must offer the same classes as the State Show except Class 10 (Iowa Holstein Futurity) which is on a state-wide basis only, Class 16 Intermediate Champion and Class 23 (Top Bred & Owned by Exhibitor) which are optional for District Shows. Districts with less than 50 head entered may combine classes 4 & 5, 6 & 7, 12 & 13, 14 & 15, and 18 & 19. 3. Classes at District Shows will be placed numerically. 4. Identified grade Holsteins may be shown if approved by the District. C. Special Rules Applying to the Iowa Holstein Show: 1. There will be an entry fee of $20.00 per animal (includes both junior and open show). The fairgrounds will open on Sunday, July 16 for cattle and exhibitors. 2. The entry deadline is July 1. Any entries received after July 1 will not be charged a late fee. However, late entries will not be included in the show catalog. Entries should be made by completing the Excel entry form by July 1 available at www.iowaholsteins.org and emailing it to shelliev@ymail.com. Entry fees should be made payable to District 1 Holstein Association and mailed to Shellie Volker, 12686 U Ave, Sumner, IA 50674. A pdf of the entry form will also be available on the website if members don’t have access to Excel. 3. The entry fee of $20.00 per animal allows members to exhibit in both the State Junior Holstein Show and the State Open Show. 4. The Iowa Holstein Show will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19 at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, West Union. The heifer classes will show first followed by the cow classes. 5. Verification of production for Class 20 is necessary. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to provide a copy of form DHIA-203 to the Show Management. 6. An animal cannot be exhibited in any other State Show prior to the Iowa State Show. D. Special Rules Applying to the Iowa Junior Holstein Show: 1. Each exhibitor must be a junior member of the Iowa Holstein Association and be 9 years of age as of January 1 of the current year and under the age of 21 years as of January 1 of the current year. 2. All animals exhibited must be registered by the
Holstein Association in the name of the junior member or parents’ name or farm prefix or be certified as a bona fide 4-H project by the County Extension Director or as an FFA project by the FFA Advisor. Certification must be brought to the Iowa Junior Holstein Show. The animal must be in the junior’s name to be eligible for Junior All-American. 3. The Iowa Junior Holstein Show will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18 at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, West Union. The show will begin with the cow classes followed by the heifer classes. Showmanship will be the last class of the day. 4. Selection of the Grand Champion of the Iowa Junior Holstein Show will be held after the Senior Champion is selected. 5. There will be a $20.00 per animal entry fee. This allows the junior member to exhibit in both the State Junior Show and the Open Show. However, there is no fee for the novice class. Each junior exhibitor will receive a t-shirt. The fairgrounds will open on Sunday, July 16 for cattle and exhibitors. 6. The entry deadline is July 1. Any entries received after July 1 will not be charged a late fee. However, late entries will not be included in the show catalog. 7. Ribbons at the State Junior Holstein Show will be awarded in ribbon groups. Animals that place first and second in their class shall be named Junior AllIowa and Reserve Junior All-Iowa. 8. Juniors must show their own animals. Excusing a member from personally exhibiting his or her animal(s) defeats one of the most important objectives of Holstein work. Hence, the Junior Advisory Committee does not approve the use of substitute showmen except in extreme cases. If a youth is injured or seriously ill at the time of the show or is involved in another activity with a non-flexible schedule at which their presence is mandatory, the youth may submit an application for a substitute showman. The substitute showman must be a Holstein junior member and approved in advance of the show by the advisory committee. 9. Production awards - There will be one for top milk based on 305 day or less actual records. The most recently completed lactation record will be used unless the current incomplete lactation record is higher. The winning cow’s record cannot be used more than once. Production information must be submitted to Carl Mensen and will be accepted until the start of the show. 10. For the Best Udder of Show, the judge will select one cow in each class, then the winner will be selected from that group. 11. Showmanship classes will be held at the completion of the show with the following order: seniors, intermediates, then juniors. The Showmanship classes will be divided into three classes. The junior division will be for exhibitors 9-12 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Intermediate exhibitors will be 13-16 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Senior exhibitors will be 17-21 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. The award can be won by an exhibitor only once in each divi-
sion. They must have shown this animal in a previous class. 12. A Novice Class will be held for junior members younger than the age of 9 years as of January 1 of the current year. The animal can be another junior member’s project. The class will be judged 100% on the showmanship of the individual exhibitor. The class will be after the Junior Champion Female is named. There is no entry fee for this class. 13. The State Holstein Junior Advisory Committee reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules of the Iowa Junior Holstein Show and will arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions or differences in regard thereto arising out of or in connection with the junior show. All possible rule infractions should be brought to the attention of the Junior Advisory Committee at least one hour before the show. Once the class is placed, all placings will stand.
National Directors’ Report
Holstein USA held its March board meeting on March 30th and 31st in Brattleboro, VT. Prior to the board meeting, the Audit Committee met at the Hartford airport. They reviewed the audit report ending December 31, 2016. HAUSA has a very strong financial position. At the board meeting, a report from the Show Committee approved the judges list and the nationally recognized shows. The performance review of the 2016 business plan was also discussed. Activities and performance followed the trends that developed throughout the year. Participation in Holstein Complete is continuing to increase as more members see its benefits. The IT rebuild continues to be a “work in progress”. Every effort is being made to make this update beneficial to all parties – breeders, field staff, and office staff. This is truly a team effort! The Nominating Committee nominated Boyd Schaufelberger for President. Candidates for Vice-President: John Bierbaum, Minnesota, Jim Burdette, Pennsylvania, and Corey Geiger, Wisconsin. Region Three nominees are Gerald Smith, Illinois, and Steve Moff, Ohio. Dale Drendel, Illinois, is running for his second term as director-at-large. A By-Law amendment will be presented at the 2017 National Convention concerning animals who are located in or who are imported from countries without an official herd book. For more information before the annual meeting, contact your local board member. Complete results will be given after the convention. Looking to the future, the board and staff continue to discuss the project, “Holstein USA,Inc. . 2030 and Beyond”. It is obvious that our national association, as indeed, the entire dairy industry, will look very different in the future. Hall of Fame Award Trent Henkes, Luana
Trent Henkes used to get mad at his folks because they wouldn’t wake him up on Saturdays to do chores. He was very excited to finally be able to join 4-H at age 10 and show his junior calf. When he was 12, his dad purchased a registered heifer. The rest is history! His junior career included winning junior and senior showmanship at the county, district, Big 4 Fair and Cattle Congress. Some champion animals were achieved along the way. Dairy judging was a big part of his youth including winning the state 4-H contest in 1977. Trent went on to coach many 4-H teams. Under his guidance, there were 6 champion senior and 4 champion junior teams. This included several high individuals. Countless workouts have been hosted for 4-H, FFA and college teams-even out of state teams at Henkeseen Holsteins. Local dairy promotion at the county level has been commitment for over 35 years. As a member of the Dairy Promotion Committee, Trent has held the office of president twice. The first time, he spearheaded a drive to build a new dairy bar at the county fair. Annually it serves about 10,000 hand dipped shakes over a 4-day period. Along with another member, he started the Kiddie Calf Show. It was important to him that it be a true showmanship class and learning experience for the over 50 children who participate each year. Henkeseen has provided Share-A-Heifers when asked. Being a dairy superintendent at the 4-H show which has had as many as 250 head is yet another testament to Trent’s commitment to local youth. Henkeseen Holsteins has regularly consigned to local, state, out-of-state and national sales. They have exhibited at county, district, state and national shows. Trent has held the offices of president, secretary and treasurer at the county Holstein level throughout the past 25 or more years. They have hosted county and state picnics and barn meetings. A special highlight was Expo week which brought many foreign visitors to the farm. He has also served in different capacities at the district level holding the offices of secretary and treasurer. He served on the Junior Advisory committee helping to revive junior activities at the district level. Trent’s state level involvement includes 16 years on the state board and 15 years on the Executive Committee, serving on all standing committees chairing the Junior and Herald committees. He also is one of the Holstein representatives to the PDCC. In 2001 he co-chaired the Souvenir Program committee and Henkeseen was a stop on the Host Day tour. Trent served as vice chairman of the 2014 National Convention when Iowa hosted and was once again a stop on Host Day having almost 500 visitors to the farm that day. In 2015, the farm hosted a tour for the National Red and White Convention. Some of Trent’s past recognition includes National Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder, District 1 and Iowa Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder and Iowa State University Dairy Science Club Honorary Member. The Henkeseen herd has been on DHIR test for 65 years and has a rolling herd average of 24,741 pounds of milk, 911 pounds of fat and 779 pounds of protein on 68 cows. They are enrolled in Holstein Complete and classify every 7 months with the latest classification in May resulting in a BAA of 110.5 with 23 EX, 28 VG and 11 GP. Trent has bred 131 EX cows of which 4 are EX-94 DOM and GMD. He has developed 21 Gold Medal Dams and 22 Dams of Merit. Henkeseen has received the PBR Herd Award for 17 years and the Progressive Genetics Herd Award for 18 years. The cornerstone of the Henkeseen herd are Henkeseen Mark 16 June 2017 Iowa Holstein Herald
Marci and Henkeseen M Hillary - back-toback 94 point Gold Medal Dam and Dam of Merits cows. Henkeseen M Hillary has 12 EX daughters. Over 50 bulls have been sold into AI from this family. Direct sons include Hillcrest, Emperor, Hilton, Hammer, Hadley and High Impact. Tracing back to Hillary include Sanchez, Emphasis and Mesland Duplex. Red was bred into the family with great success and approximately 25% of the herd is Red & White. Family is very important to Trent. The farm has always been a family operation. He met his wife, Leslie at Iowa State University where they both graduated with Dairy Science degrees. He has instilled his passion for dairy farming and especially Registered Holsteins in his two children. Matt is home farming with his father and is proudly the 6th generation to farm at Henkeseen. Leah is married with two children and works for Fitzgerald Inc., a dairy equipment dealer. He has brought a whole new meaning to the word Papa! His grandsons adore him and can’t wait to come to the farm and help Papa drive tractor and feed calves.

Andy Dougherty, Epworth, Iowa was selected as a 2017 Distinguished Junior Member semifinalist. The Distinguished Junior Member recognition is the highest honor given to Junior members ages 17 to 21 who demonstrate involvement in a variety of activities and who have excelled in preparing for their life’s work, while contributing to their local and state Holstein activities. He will be interviewed at the National Holstein Convention, June 27 – July 1 in Bellevue, Washington, vying to be named one of six finalists. Finalists receive complimentary annual renewed memberships to Holstein Association USA. Regan Demmer, Peosta, Iowa was selected as a finalist for the Young Distinguished Junior Member (YDJM) competition. The YDJM recognition is the highest award given to National Junior Holstein members, ages 9 to 16, and honors their dairy project work and involvement with other agricultural and community organizations. They will be honored during the 2017 National Holstein Convention. For decades, and continuing into current day, the Holstein Foundation offers youth dairy project ribbons free of charge to any show that requests them. The ribbons offered included Champion and Reserve Champion rosettes, as well as first through fifth place ribbons. To request ribbons for your fair or show, complete the form on the Holstein Foundation’s website. Orders received with less than two weeks’ notice will be charged a $40 rush fee. Show Ring Policy The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring. The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition. At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting. It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable. The following practices are a violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with and irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping” c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag) 3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: 18 June 2017 Iowa Holstein Herald
a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other similar apparatus to fill the rumen b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline. 4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters 5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) 6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches 7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics. 8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation. Monitoring and Enforcement Procedures for Iowa Holstein Association (IHA) Show Ring Policy District Shows 1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted. State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair 1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him. 2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary. State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair 1. When hosting the State Show not held with the Iowa State Fair, the district is responsible for all management of the show including working with the Ethics Committee to enforce the IHA Show Ring Policy. 2. An Ethics Committee will be formed for the State Show. It shall consist of three people. One person will be from the IHA Show Committee and the other two will be from the host district. 3. The Ethics Committee will observe activities prior to and during the show and along with show management, receive complaints of alleged violations. 4. Any complaints of suspected violations must be made before the conclusion of the show. 5. The Ethics Committee or it’s designates has the authority to perform and review results of the following: a. An ultrasound examination of the udder prior to milk out b. Milk out of any individual cow c. Collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids d. Use of any other non lethal technology that may be useful in determining violations e. Delivery for the purpose of inspection or laboratory analysis,
at any time, of any hypodermic needles, syringes, swabs, cloths, other devices, dispensers, samples of medicines, or other preparations in any form, in possession or control of the exhibitor, fitter, agents or persons acting on behalf of the exhibitor. f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches. 6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/her animals. 8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee. 9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination. 10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them. 11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The
accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting. 12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges. 13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties. 14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing. 15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA. 16. Under the Rules of the Show, the exhibitor agrees as final and to abide by any decisions of IHA in regards to violations of the IHA Show Ring Policy and resulting penalties. Penalties for Violations of IHA Show Ring Policy 1. 1st Offense - minimum of receiving a letter of reprimand to a maximum of one year suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), fitter(s), and/or other representatives, either individually or combination thereof from all IHA state sponsored shows. 2. Subsequent offenses - minimum of one year suspension to maximum of barred for life for the animal(s), owner(s), fitter(s), and/or other representatives, either individually or combination thereof from all IHA state sponsored shows.

Iowa Holstein Association Board Meeting Minutes President Trent Henkes called the Board of Directors meeting of the Iowa Holstein Association to order at 9:14 a.m. on March 18, 2017 at Gus & Tony’s Townhouse Cafe, West Union, Iowa. All members were present except for Dan Bolin, District 2; Dave Chapman, District 4, and Bob Rahe, District 8. Carl Mensen moved to seat Dennis Devore for Dan Bolin and Alan Graves for Dave Chapman, seconded by Dan Moon. Motion carried. Doug Lyons moved to approve the minutes of the November 5, 2016 meeting and the February 25, 2017 reorganization board as printed, seconded by Paul Stempfle. Motion carried. Treasurer Shellie Volker reported a checking account balance of $13,434.98. Katie Stoll moved to approve the Treasurer's report, seconded by Carl Mensen. Motion carried. Junior - Carl Mensen commented that the juniors would be meeting before the sale. Their junior convention went well. They are checking on the possibility of having this year’s convention in West Union. Eleven juniors have qualified for the national convention. Entries are just coming in for the speech contest. Sale - Walt Wessel reported that there will be 70 lots sold. Things have been going smoothly for the sale. The rental rates have increased so other options are being considered including possibly bringing in the cattle on Wednesday instead of Tuesday and checking on other possible locations for hosting the sale. Herald - Trent Henkes reported that we need people to advertise and to also consider the calling card ad. The June issue will be a Midwest Holsteins edition. A link to an online copy of the Herald will be on Dairy Agenda Today for a 3-week period
after each Herald is printed in 2017. Membership - Shellie Volker reported that she is still receiving memberships. She will be sending reminder cards soon to those who have not yet paid for 2017. Program Development and Management - Tom Simon reported that this summer’s state picnic is being discussed with a location and date to be announced later. The state will host next year’s state convention. Heartland Acres has increased their rates from a few years ago so other locations are now being considered. Also, the committee discussed increasing the Executive Committee from 3 board members to 5 board members along with the officers. Show - Paul Stempfle reported that the State Show will be held July 18 and 19 in West Union. The entry deadline is July 1. Mark Rueth will judge the open show and Eddie Bue will be the judge for the junior show. Carl Mensen moved to approve the committee reports, seconded by Joe Gibbs. Motion carried. National Association - Dennis Devore reported that members should utilize the Holstein Association’s website more as there is so much more available now. Transfers can now be completed online with a very quick turnaround time. Alan and Dennis will be assisting with the transfers from the state sale. Ben Scott and Regan Demmer Regan Demmer is the 15-year-old son of Rick and Kathy Demmer of Peosta, Iowa. Regan and his family own and operate Le-O-La Holsteins where they milk 70 registered Holstein cows in a tie-stall barn and crop 160 acres. Regan is a caregiver to the newborn calves on the farm in providing feedings, aids in milking twice daily, and contributes to the responsibilities of managing records and registration of the dairy heard. The Iowa Junior Holstein Association has provided Regan with various opportunities as he has been active in showing in the State Junior Holstein show. In the showring he has recieved honors of Jr All Iowa and Res. Jr All Iowa. He has attended the Iowa Junior Holstein Conventions and has enjoyed visiting with friends from across the state. He attended his first National Holstein Convention at the age of six weeks, when Iowa held the 2001 National Convention in Cedar Rapids. In recent National conventions he has attended he has represented Iowa Juniors in dairy jeopardy, public speaking and quiz bowl. Regan is a sophomore at Western Dubuque High School where he is involved with Future Farmers of America and football. He is also active in 4-H, judging and showing dairy at the county and state fair, where he has received numerous honors in showmanship and placings. His most exciting accomplishment has been placing as high individual, and his team placed first at the North American Int’l Livestock Expo 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in Louisville, KY. In his spare time he enjoys working with his animals, and spending time with his family and friends. Benjamin Scott is the 16-year-old son of Mike and Kathleen Scott of Westgate. Their family milks 140 registered Holstein cows in a free-stall barn with two robotic milkers. Ben is responsible for maintenance and managing the barn in his parents’ absence. He also helps milk for Jake and Rachel Mills in their tie-stall barn and assists with the day-to-day chores on the farm. The Iowa Junior Holstein Association has given Ben many opportunities for showing at District and State Junior Shows and attending the State and National Conventions. The highlight of his showing career was in 2015 when he exhibited the Reserve Jr. AllIowa Jr. 3-year-old and Reserve Intermediate Champion. He has worked hard to improve his clipping skills and this past year fit all his animals for show. After starting with a calf in 4th grade, Ben has grown his dairy herd to six head. Master Breeder Award Paul Schmitt, Durango
Paul was born and raised on the family farm. Their first registered Holstein was purchased as a heifer at a sale and was consigned by Mark Schlitzer in the late 1970s. One thing called for another, and since they now had a registered Holstein, they now needed a prefix. On his way to school one day, Paul’s son, Tom, noticed a street named Morningview, and he decided that should be their farm Kay Schmitt and her family accepting the Master Breeder Award from Linda Pagel prefix. That was just the beginning Some people probably have wondered of the success of Morningview. The herd has received the Progressive Genetics Herd with so many excellent animals in their Award for 24 years, the Progressive Breed- herd, why didn’t they ever exhibit their Holers Registry Award for 20 years, and they steins. But if you know the Schmitt Family received the National Herd of Excellence very well, you also know that they love their sports. Baseball season and the show seaAward in 2008 and 2009. Linda Pagel Scholarship
Andy Dougherty stated that his involvement in the Junior Holstein Association shaped him into the person he is today. Between working on his grandparent’s farm and 4-H, FFA and Junior Holstein activities, it helped him cement his future plans. Andy’s first show experience was at his district show in Andy and Linda Pagel the novice class. He has since participated on all levels from district to national. He has been a junior member for 11 years. At the state level, he has held several offices and currently serves as co-historian. An active participant of state junior conventions, Andy enjoys getting together with the other juniors. At the national level, in 2012 he was on the runner-up Junior Quiz bowl team. Andy has been on the senior quiz bowl team also. Dairy Jeopardy has been an almost yearly activity for him. In 2013, he was selected as a finalist for Young Distinguished Junior Member. He has applied for DJM this year and is considering running for the Junior Advisory Committee. Andy is junior at Iowa State majoring in Dairy Science. His future plan is to pursue a career in the A.I. Industry. His activities at Iowa State include the Dairy Science Club, Intramurals, the Agriculture Marketing and Management Club, and the Iowa State Wrestling Club. Andy is the son of Ron and Julie Dougherty of Epworth.
Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Scholarship
Alyssa Dougherty is currently a freshman at Iowa State University. She has represented Iowa at the National Junior Holstein Convention in dairy jeopardy, dairy bowl and was a member of the Champion Junior Dairy Bowl Team. She has served as the Iowa Junior Holstein Association Treasurer and Secretary. While in high school, she was very active in track, cross country, basketball, student council, National Honor Society, and Future Business Leaders of America, just to name a few of her activities. At Iowa State, Alyssa is currently Maple - Young Hall Secretary, and is a member of the Iowa State University First-Year Honors Program and is involved in SHOP - Students Helping Our Peers Food Pantry, Student Dietetic Association, Hopeful Africa and Salt Company. Alyssa’s goals include graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. Following the completion of a dietetic internship, she plans to take the national exam to become a registered dietitian. Then Alyssa would like to seek employment with the World Food Prize Foundation, a global nonprofit, or a research facility studying malnutrition. Alyssa says, “My life goal is to improve the quality of life by promoting a healthy, nutritious lifestyle.” Alyssa is the daughter of Ron and Julie Dougherty of Epworth.
Iowa Holstein Association Scholarships
Nathan Arthur has been active at all levels of Junior Holsteins. On the state level, he has exhibited at the state show, receiving several Junior All-Iowa and Reserve placings. As a seven year attendee of the state junior convention, he has served as secretary and is currently vice president. On the national level, Mary Scott and Nathan Arthur he has attended five conventions. He has placed in four different Jeopardy contests, was a member of the national champion junior quiz bowl team, was captain of the senior team in 2016 and was named National Young Distinguished Junior Member in 2015. Nathan currently attends Iowa State majoring in Dairy Science and minoring in Agronomy. He is a member of the Dairy Science Club, Agronomy Club and Farm Operations Club. His future plans include working with dairy cattle genetics or the A. I. industry. His goal is to someday return to his family’s dairy farm and develop his own herd of registered Holsteins. Nathan is the son of Alden and Amy Arthur of Sumner. Mary Scott started her Holstein Junior career at the age of nine and has been very involved ever since then. She has shown at district shows throughout her junior career. She was also selected as Distinguished Junior member in 2015 from District One. On the state level, she was the 2013 Young Distinguished member. In the organization, she has held two terms as historian, one as vice president, and is the current Iowa Junior President. In 2015, Mary was the state Holstein princess. Nationally, Mary has been a member of three Junior and one Senior quiz bowl teams. She participated in all three levels of Jeopardy, Speech contest, Folding Display contest, and has received national cow awards. She has attended 10 conventions. As a junior at Iowa State, she is an active member of the Dairy Science Club and the Farming Operations Club. Mary participates in intramural sports. Future plans are to stay involved in the dairy industry. Mary is the daughter of Mike and Kathleen Scott of Westgate. Royce Demmer is currently attending University of Wisconsin Madison in the two year Farm and Industry short course program. He is majoring in Dairy Science, Farm Service and Supply and Crop and Soil Management. As a state member, he has attended the state junior convention, exhibited at the state show, and has served as reporter. On the national level, Royce has participated in Jeopardy and quiz bowl, attended the convention when Iowa hosted it, exhibited at the World Dairy Expo, and had 2 animals nominated Junior AllAmerican. Outside of Holstein activities, he was involved in football, track, FFA, 4-H and church. Royce plans to use all aspects of his education to stay involved in the agricultural field. Obituaries
Roger Allen Gerlach died at the age of 85 at Hospice of North Iowa Muse Norris Inpatient Unit on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Roger was born Sept. 18, 1931, in Carpenter, Iowa, to Earl and Leda (Schrieber) Gerlach. Roger married Florence Roseanna Parvin on March 5, 1960, in Des Moines. Roger spent a lifetime in dairy leadership, in service to the dairy industry, and developing and managing a superior herd of dairy cattle. Roger served as a director of the Iowa Holstein Association for over 20 years, served on all of the committees and was chairman of three. He has been President of the Iowa Dairy Industry Commission, President of the Iowa Dairy Expo Coordinating Boards, President of the North Iowa Milk Co-op and President of the Iowa Purebred Dairy Cattle Council. He has received the Iowa Distinguished Dairyman Award, Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award and was honored with his wife, Florence, as an Iowa State University Dairy Science Club Honorary Member. On the national level Roger was a Holstein Convention delegate for 13 years, and at the 100th Anniversary of the Holstein Association in Hartford, CT, he was elected to the National Holstein Board of Directors. Roger was elected to the Genetic Advancement Committee (his first choice), and later was elected chairman of the committee. Roger was the first chairman of the Ad Hoc Technical Review Committee, and served on the Executive Committee for four years, the Holstein–Friesian Services Board for four years, and the International Board for four years. Roger was a Holstein breeder (GGG Holsteins) and State and National member all of his life. He has shown numerous AllIowa and Reserve All-Iowa winners as well as breeding and owning the All-American Junior Yearling in 1958. Roger has won the Hawkeye Holstein Futurity five times. He also won the Moo-La Sweepstakes and had a reserve winner. He sold dairy animals to Japan, Holland, Canada, Mexico, South America, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, 11 different states, and five bulls to AI studs. Roger’s community activities include being a lifetime member to the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church where he has served on the Board, American Legion member, Acorn Park and Golf Course Board, and 4-H leader for many years, the
St. Ansgar Economic and Development Committee, and volunteer at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. The GGG Holstein herd was used for numerous college, FFA and 4-H judging team workouts. Roger and his wife Florence enjoyed golfing, having golfed in seventeen states, Scotland and England. Roger and Florence traveled to 48 states and 8 different countries. Roger was a Sergeant at Fort Riley, Kansas, who trained new recruits on the artillery range for 18 months during the Korean War. David Gerard Knipper, 56, of Marion, and formerly of Dyersville, Iowa passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from complications of Angiosarcoma of the liver diagnosed December 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. When Dave was diagnosed with cancer he didn’t let that cancer rule him. He ruled it. Dave’s ‘herd was formed’ and helped him work through his bucket list, and supported him through his journey. He worked up until the day he died, letting nothing stop him. Along with this, he continued to cheer on Andrew and the Hawkeyes, and usually was the loudest fan in the stands. Euchre was his favorite card game, and he never liked to lose. Dave was very proud of the work he did to ensure the success of the dairy and beef farmers that he helped throughout the years as a salesman for Prairie State/ Select Sires. He was very proud of his four-legged wives. Dave was very active in the District 8 and the Iowa Holstein Associations serving on the state board for 12 years. Dave was someone who always put others first, willing to help out when needed, and was a strong religious man. He did not inherit his father’s handy man skills, and was lovingly called “The bolt breaker” by his family. He was many times seen as a human jungle gym to all of his nieces and nephews. Dave, the son of Larry and Katie (Hosch) Knipper, married Victoria Thiede on August 4th, 2001 in Dyersville. Survivors include his wife, son, Andrew Harrison, siblings: John (Deb) Knipper of Clear Lake, IA, Michele (David) Kucharczyk of Onalaska, WI, Jude (Stacy) Knipper of Elk Horn, NE, sisters in-law: Shirley (Mark) Singsank of Dyersville, Audrey Spangenberg of Dallas TX, and Barbara (David) Michel of Preston IA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Peter.

2017 Iowa Holstein Convention Highlights The 2017 Iowa Holstein Convention was held February 25 at the Backwoods Bar & Grill, McGregor. Officers elected for 2017 are Trent Henkes, President; Carl Mensen, Vice-President; and Kevin Fossum, Joe Gibbs, Mark Knudtson, Dan Moon, Jess Rediske, Katie Stoll and Walt Wessel as Directors-at-Large. Following the annual meeting, the standing committees met followed by the board reorganization meeting. Jeff Hammerand, Mark Knudtson and Dan Moon were elected to serve on the Executive Committee The Friday evening banquet was attended by approximately 110 people. The emcee for the evening was Mark Knudtson. Jessica Stempfle, the 2016 Iowa Holstein Princess crowned Jenna Chapman as the 2017 Iowa Holstein Princess. Kathy Demmer presented the Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Scholarship to Alyssa Dougherty. The Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award recipient was Trent Henkes. Jeff Hammerand presented the Young Distinguished Junior Member Awards to Regan Demmer and Ben Scott and the Distinguished Junior Member Awards to Andy Dougherty and Kate Stewart. Trent & Leslie Henkes, Trent was the recipient of the Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award.
Mark Knudtson recognized the recipients of the Progressive Breeders Registry Award and the Progressive Genetics Herd Award. The Top BAA Herds and Top Production Herds were recognized by Carl Mensen. This year’s 40-Year Members of the National Association were Steve Gerlach, Patsy Kerndt, Henry & Barbara Runde, Kenneth Shatek, Philip Specht, and Alan Steffens. Leslie Henkes presented the Linda Pagel Scholarship to Andy Dougherty. Mary Scott and Nathan Arthur were the recipients of the Iowa Holstein Association scholarship. Blake and Jordan Hansen, who were unable to attend, were honored with the Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award. Paul Schmitt received the Master Breeder Award posthumously. Linda Pagel presented the award given in memory of Russel Pagel to Kay Schmitt. Ron Lenth received the Distinguished Service Award from Trent Henkes. We would like to thank District 1 for hosting this year’s convention. 2017 Iowa Distinguished Junior Members Andy Dougherty, 21, is the son of Ron and Julie Dougherty of Epworth, Iowa. He has two younger sisters, Alyssa and Amanda. Andy grew up just a few miles from Farnear Holsteins which his grandparents, Joe and Virginia Simon started in 1962. Now his uncles Tom and Rick Simon and families own and operate Farnear Holsteins. Andy states that Farnear Holsteins is what “a family farm is all about.” Spending time on the 120 cow Registered Holstein herd with 300 replacements has taught Andy responsibility, dedication, and hard work and has made him who he is today. Andy started his involvement with the Iowa Holstein Association when he showed a calf in the novice class at his district show. He continued showing Holsteins at the district and state level. Andy participated in various contests at the National Junior Holstein conventions. He has competed in Junior and Senior Dairy Bowl, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Jeopardy, Digital Historian, and the State Scrapbook Contest. He was also a 2013 YDJM Finalist. Andy has served as Treasurer, Reporter, Digital Historian, and District 8 representative of the Iowa Junior Holstein Association. This summer, Andy will represent Iowa in his last year as a Junior member in the senior jeopardy contest in Washington. Currently, Andy is a junior at Iowa State University majoring in Dairy Science. He is involved in the Iowa State Dairy Science Club. He helps with the ice cream mixing, Dairy Coalition, and Intramurals. Andy is also a member of the Agricultural Marketing and Management Organization. This past summer, Andy had completed an internship for R-John Holsteins in California. He currently works for Farnear Holsteins during school breaks and on weekends when he is home. After graduation from Iowa State, Andy would like to pursue a career in the A.I. industry. He wants to continue building his herd of registered Holsteins and promoting the Dairy Industry. He plans to become actively involved with the Iowa Holstein Association after completing his Iowa Junior Holstein membership.

Kate Stewart, 20, is the daughter of Matt and Diana Stewart from Oelwein, Iowa. Along with her four older siblings, Jared, Lindsey, Mike, and Dan, Kate grew up on the 295-acre fifth generation family farm. Following in her brothers and sisters’ footsteps, Kate became active in the Iowa Junior Holstein Association at age 9. She participated in Junior Quiz Bowl, Junior and Intermediate Jeopardy, Folding Display Contest, Prepared Public Speaking, and Scrapbook. These events allowed Kate to explore the history of the Holstein breed, to see how far it has come, and to dream of where it will go. “My adventure began with the Holstein cow. It has taken me to my fair share of shows, inspired me to share the dairy farmer’s story as the 2015-2016 Iowa Dairy Princess, and has allowed me to help raise hundreds of dollars for the Great American Milk Drive. But my adventure didn’t end when I left for college, I’ve climbed mountains in Panama to visit dairy farms and learn the farmer’s stories, I’ve visited farms in China and learned how policies impact an industry. My love for the Holstein cow has given me a world view, broadening my vision and instilling in me a passion for helping people,” Kate Stewart said. “Being a member of the Iowa Junior Holstein Association has shown me that no obstacle is too great when you are surrounded by a community that is continuously working together for the betterment of the product, animal welfare, and their neighbors. Having had the opportunity to travel and speak with farmers from across the country at National Holstein Conventions it became evident that it wasn’t just the Iowa Junior Holstein Association that had this support, it was simply how the dairy community worked.” Currently, Kate is a sophomore at Iowa State University dual majoring in Global Resource Systems and Agronomy. She is actively involved in the Iowa State Blood Drive, Global Health and AIDS Coalition, and Dairy Science Club – especially volunteering with Food at First, helping serve meals to those in need in the Ames community. She is also an ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Global Resource Systems, and the Peace Corps. Kate is currently serving as the Vice President of Community Service for Kappa Delta Sorority as well as leading a small group for St. Thomas Aquinas Church. This summer, Kate will be in Uganda with the Iowa State University – Uganda Program. Along with students and faculty, she will be developing a school garden for an elementary school in the Kamuli District, teaching curriculum in agriculture, science, and nutrition to grades 1 through 7, as well as participating in one or more bi-national team projects that support the school garden program such as irrigation, beekeeping, and agroforestry. “I am rooted in the dairy community in which I love for that is where my adventure began - with the Holstein cow, and after graduation I plan to use my dairy knowledge as well as my knowledge gained from my degrees to best help people in developing countries increase crop and livestock yields in sustainable practices.
