Hall of Fame Award
Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award
Tom did not follow in any of his older brother’s footsteps of pursuing careers off the farm. No, he was a lifer and always knew his passion was to be a dairy farmer. His choice of occupation, however, did have its advantages. He was blessed with the opportunity to work side by side with, and learn from, one of the best - his dad, Joe Simon. Tom still remembers how excited he felt at a young age when his dad began purchasing registered Holsteins. Tom took an active role in the breeding and sire selection in the family’s steady climb toward a successful herd of registered Holsteins. Despite the free room and board and his mother’s delicious home cooking, Tom could not deny the love bug and married a farm girl, Shirley, in 1981. Her farming background meant she understood the long hours involved in farming. It also didn’t hurt that she could assist with chores when they ran short of help. 1981 was also the year the farm achieved their first homebred Excellent cow. By the end of the decade, cows from Farnear Holsteins were recognized at the state and national level. Tom strives to provide a wide variety of genetics in their current breeding program. Farnear Holsteins has received Grand Champion and Premier Breeder at the state level along with several All-Iowa and Reserve All-Iowa honors throughout the years. Tom has opened the farm to many state picnics, 4-H judging workouts and college judging teams. Farnear Holsteins has also hosted many visitors to the farm during Expo week as well as local and foreign visitors throughout the years. Tom has been very active in the local, district, state and national Holstein organizations. He has held many offices, including President of the Iowa Holstein Association, and has served as a delegate to the National Holstein Conventions. In 2014, he was part of the planning committee for the National Holstein Convention that was held in Dubuque. He was co-chair of the sale committee, and Farnear hosted a farm tour. He was on the Dairy Foundation Board and served ten years on the Prairie State Board. He is a past 4-H leader and serves on the Dubuque County 4-H Dairy Committee. In his community, he has been involved with St. Joseph Parish, Farley. Presently he is on the Cemetery board, and a past member of the Parish Council and the Faith Formation board. Today, he is the co-owner of Farnear Holsteins with his brother Rick. He will be married to his wife Shirley of 37 years in June. They have 4 sons, Jeremy and wife Kristin and daughters, Mila and Lucy, Matt and wife Kaci and son Bodie, Mark, and Josh (fiancé Ashley). He enjoys visiting with family and friends who also share an interest in dairy cattle and above all spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Brent has always enjoyed the farm life and has taken special interest in the cattle, both beef and dairy, but especially the Holsteins. He prepared well for farming by being involved in every aspect of the farm operation from early on, and you might say he was obsessed with it. He was involved in 4-H and FFA, showing both beef steers and dairy cattle with much success, as well as being on the judging teams for both. He was a member of the Ed-Co FFA Team that won the state contest and placed 4th in the national contest. He was also a member of the ISU Dairy Judging Team. One of the highlights was winning the linear contest in the intercollegiate division at the World Dairy Expo. Besides farming, he fit cattle for Henkeseen Holsteins and Lands-Brook Farms for about 10 years. Brent purchased his first farm in 2003, where he and his family reside, and purchased his great uncle’s farms in 2016 in the family partnership. Brent and Staci farm in partnership with his parents, Walt and Judy Wessel, and his brother, Jason and wife Stephanie Wessel. They are the fifth generation to farm on this site which is a Heritage Farm, and it has always been in the Wessel name. The farms now consists of 1100 acres of corn, beans and alfalfa. Wesselcrest Holsteins has a rolling herd average of 28,546M, 1120F and 919P on 240 cows. In April of 2012, Wessels added a new freestall shed and two robots that milk 150 cows with the remainder of the cows in tie-stalls. The purchase of Morningview Shtl Alana-ET in 2006 made a major impact in their herd. With over 30 embryos exported and 14 sons going to AI, the profits from these sales out of Alana allowed them to purchase seven additional females also with outstanding genetics. Currently, over 90% of their herd traces back to these eight cows and between all of them, hundreds of embryos have been exported and over 50 bulls have entered AI. Brent believes in limiting inbreeding and using outcross sires. They have received the Progressive Genetics Herd Award for eight years. Brent and Staci are the parent of five children: Kaden, a student at ISU, Elliana, Aspen, Cambrie, and Cagney. Staci is also a Registered Dental Assistant and works in Guttenberg. In their spare time, Brent and Staci enjoy following their kids sporting events and activities, which includes fitting and showing beef, golfing, playing cards, family atv rides and gathering around the fire pit.

President’s Perspective After a cold wet spring and low milk prices I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a sunny, busy summer. On a positive note, the state association managed a very successful State Spring Sale. A huge crowd was on hand for the sale and anxiously awaited the drawing for the calf raffle to kick off the sale. I’d like to extend a huge shout out to our sale co-chairs Carl Mensen and Kyle Demmer for putting together a very successful and profitable sale. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make the sale a success. If everyone does their part and helps where they can we will continue to have a successful sale. Also thanks to everyone who purchased tickets for the raffle and congrats to the lucky winners. The state hosted a successful state convention at a wonderful new location, the Delaware County Fairgrounds, in Manchester. We were privileged to have several members of the National staff join us for a member informational meeting and a great breeder’s seminar which featured four Iowa breeders. The members that participated in the Central Plains Dairy Expo trip enjoyed a fantastic trip. Enroute to the Expo the group visited Hawkeye Holsteins and enjoyed a tour of the farm and cows by Dave and Cody Chapman. At the Expo, we were treated to an awesome Easton Corbin concert, plenty of good food, and an interesting trade show. I’d encourage anyone to attend the Expo if they have the opportunity in the future. With the National Convention coming up I’d like to wish our Juniors the best of luck and encourage anyone that has comments or concerns for our national board to visit with our elected delegates before the convention. They will be our voice. The State Show will be held at the State Fair on August 9. There are District and local fairs and shows scheduled that I’d encourage you to participate in whether it be showing or simply attending and having an opportunity to see some good cattle and visit with dairy friends!!! Also be sure to join us at the State Picnic which will be held at San-Dan Holsteins, New Vienna, on August 18th. Hope everyone has a great summer.

Dear Iowa Holstein Association, The junior members and I all had a great time at the 2018 Holstein Convention in Manchester this February! The live auction made quite a bit of money that will be used for all junior activities and expenses. It is quite humbling when the adults in the association are so supportive of the young and aspiring dairy enthusiasts of the future. I speak for the entire junior association when I say thank you for your monetary support. Jenna Chapman, IJHA Secretary

Alternate Iowa Holstein Princess
Hello Holstein Lovers, My name is Cynthia Hamlett, and I am your current Iowa Holstein Princess Alternate. I am the 19 year old daughter of Mark and Jennifer Hamlett. I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers, and we live just north of Aurora where we milk around 60 registered Holsteins. I recently finished my first year at Iowa State University where I am majoring in Agriculture and Society with a minor in Animal Science. Currently, I am the intern at AMPI at the Arlington Division. I will be learning a new side of things with production after taking milk to the plant. I was active in high school through 4-H, FFA, and the Fayette County Dairy Promotion. After going to college, I jumped right in and joined the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Club and the Dairy Science Club. Through the Iowa Junior Holstein Association, I was elected vice president during our Junior Convention in December. These positions and groups allow me to communicate and spread the good knowledge with individuals all around. After being crowned at the end of February, I helped at the Iowa Holstein Spring Sale by handing out sale slips. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of new faces and interact with people in our industry. I look forward to all of the upcoming events this summer. If you would like to contact me for anything, my number is 563608-9737 and my email is chamlett@iastate.edu. Best regards, Cynthia Hamlett

Why did you decide to attend ISU? I chose Iowa State University because I knew that I wanted a future in the dairy industry and ISU offers the best dairy science program in the Midwest. What has been your most memorable college experience? So far, my most memorable college experience has been attending the Midwest ADSA-SAD conferences. Networking with students from other colleges as well as ISU is a great opportunity to make connections within the dairy industry. What has been your favorite course? My favorite class was Animal Science 333, Embryo Transfer with Dr. Youngs. This class taught applied reproduction, such as synchronization programs, ET and IVF. I enjoyed it because it made me think about why we give shots to cows, and when we give them makes a difference in the response we will get. What are your future career goals? After graduation, I would like to work in the field of animal reproduction while playing an active role on my families farm.

Any partnership animal is a separate exhibitor with the exception of family partnerships. 7. Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show (State Open Show Only) - The same rules apply as listed above for Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. If a youth is injured or seriously ill at the time of the show or is involved in another activity with a non-flexible schedule at which their presence is mandatory, the youth may submit an application for a substitute showman. The substitute showman must be a Holstein junior member and approved in advance of the show by the advisory committee. 7. Production award - There will be one for top milk based on 305 day or less actual records. The award will be based on records sent in with the initial entry. The age break will be determined at the show. Previous winners are not eligible to compete. 11. The State Holstein Junior Advisory Committee reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules of the Iowa Junior Holstein Show and will arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions or differences in regard thereto arising out of or in connection with the junior show. Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed. from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring. The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition. At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting. It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable. The following practices are a violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with and irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping” c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag) 3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to:
a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other similar apparatus to fill the rumen b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline. 4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters 5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) 6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches 7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics. 8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation. Monitoring and Enforcement Procedures for Iowa Holstein Association (IHA) Show Ring Policy District Shows 1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted. State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair 1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him. 2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary. State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair 1. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches. 6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/her animals. 8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee. 9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination. 10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them. 11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The
accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting. 12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges. 13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties. 14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing. 15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA. 16. Iowa Holstein Association Board Meeting Minutes President Trent Henkes called the Board of Directors meeting of the Iowa Holstein Association to order at 9:39 a.m. on March 17, 2018 at Gus & Tony’s Townhouse Cafe, West Union, Iowa. All members were present except for Bob Rahe, District 8. Dan Bolin moved to seat Alan Graves for Bob Rahe, seconded by Kevin Fossum. Motion carried. Doug Lyons moved to approve the minutes of the November 4, 2017 meeting and the February 24, 2018 reorganization board as printed, seconded by Carl Mensen. Motion carried. Treasurer Shellie Volker reported a checking account balance of $34,888.64. Katie Stoll moved to approve the Treasurer's report, seconded by Joe Gibbs. Motion carried. Junior - Jeff Hammerand commented that the juniors would be meeting before the sale. Their junior convention went well. They are still needing some more trophy sponsors for the junior state show. The juniors will be running the lunch stand at the sale. Sale - Carl Mensen reported that there will be 47 lots sold with six head selling in absentia and two embryo packages. Things have been going smoothly for the sale. The calf raffle has gone over well and very few tickets remain to be sold. Most likely, all tickets will be sold prior to the drawing. Herald - The June issue will be a Midwest Holsteins edition. Membership - Shellie Volker reported that she is still receiving memberships. She will be sending reminder cards soon to those who have not yet paid for 2018. Program Development and Management - Tom Simon reported that this summer’s state picnic is being discussed with a location and date to be announced later. District 4 will host next
year’s state convention on February 23 at the Wild Rose, Emmetsburg. Approximately 12 people are planning to go on the Central Plains Dairy Expo trip. Instead of renting any vehicles, personal vehicles will be used for the transportation. Hosting another national convention in the future was discussed. Carl Mensen moved that we submit to the national association that Iowa would like to host the 2024 National Convention. Show - Paul Stempfle reported that the State Show will be held in conjunction with the State Fair this year. Randy Blodgett has been hired again to cover the show. Jeff Hammerand moved to approve the committee reports, seconded by Kevin Fossum. Motion carried. National Association - Dennis Devore reported that the Holstein Association has recently launched Holstein Marketplace which will be an affordable classified ad section on a page on the Holstein Association’s website. For more information or to place an ad, contact the national association, Alan or Dennis. They have also have added TriStar AMR which will not be included in Holstein COMPLETE™ at this time, and the records are not eligible for recognition programs. However, this program will allow producers with robotic milking systems who are no longer participating in traditional milk recording programs to have their production information published on official Holstein pedigrees. Katie Stoll moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Doug Lyons. Motion carried with adjournment at 10:12 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Paula Smith, Secretary
