President’s Perspective
2019 Iowa Holstein Princess
Hello everybody, For those of you that don’t know me, I am Carl Mensen, my wife Lisa and I milk 80 cows northeast of Luxemburg where we raised our three boys, who help if and when they can. My goal for the next two years as your president is (1) Not to be the first Holstein president to be impeached. And (2) most importantly find ways to give more value to your membership. What can we do as an association to make it worth your time and money to be a member. To do this we need input from you. Bring your thought and concerns to the State Picnic on August 31 at the Doug Fairbanks farm near Anamosa. This is a great opportunity to visit with some old and meet new friends. The show season is here. Now would be a good time to get that heifer out of the pasture and get a halter on her. (lol) Check the dates for your local district show. The state show will be at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Manchester, July 18 and 19. You will NOT be allowed in the barns or on the grounds until noon on Tuesday, July 16. Only wood shavings will be allowed to be used as bedding. Hopefully you bring a couple head or more to show. Otherwise, come that day to see some of the best cattle around the country paraded around the ring. Remember showing cattle is like picking your date for the high school dance, just because your choice does not get picked for the Royal line-up does not make them a bad choice. Enjoy the show season. Best of luck to the Juniors, their parents and coaches heading to the National Convention, June 23-27 in Appleton, Wisconsin. Safe travel to our delegates and members who will be attending. Have safe summer, no matter how busy it may be, and be sure to make time for what is most important, FAMILY and FRIENDS. Carl Mensen
Hello Everyone! My name is Alexis Costello and I am honored to be your 2019 Iowa Holstein Princess. I am the 20-year-old daughter of Tim and Karen Costello of Cedar Rapids. My sister, Abby, served as the 2010 Iowa Holstein Princess, which makes this opportunity extra special. My family raises show heifers as well as milking about 90 head at the dairy. I graduated this May from Mount Mercy University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. My major was Operations Management with minors in Criminal Justice and Economics. I am currently in the graduate program at MMU working towards my MBA and will be done May 2020. In high school, I was very active in 4-H and FFA. I served as the Linn-Mar FFA Chapter President and was apart of the National FFA Chorus twice. I also served as the 2017 Linn County Fair Queen. I started my duties this year at the 33rd Celebration of Ag banquet in Cedar Rapids as a guest of honor. I was able to meet and speak with a number of industry and political representatives about the current state of agriculture. I am most looking forward to events such as this in the coming year where I get the opportunity to advocate for the dairy industry. If you have any shows, fairs, parades, or events you would like me to be present at, please do not hesitate to reach out. My email is alcostello19@gmail.com. I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming year. All the best, Alexis Costello

Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award Nathan Adams, Waucoma
Growing up Nathan was always with his father on the farm and loved every moment of it. He was involved in 4-H showing his dairy cattle as well as being on the Fayette County 4-H dairy judging team. After graduating from Northeast Iowa Community College’s dairy science program, Nathan began farming with his parents, Scott and Jean in 2003. Nathan purchased his first registered Holstein in the early 1990s, and they have continued to add more Holsteins. Adaway Dairy LLC was formed by his parents and Nathan in 2009. They were milking 150 cows in a 36 stanchion barn with 18 units. In December 2011, they were the first dairy in Iowa install a DeLaval robotic milking system. They worked on increasing their herd size during the transition to robotics. The robotic herd’s milk production increased over 10%, the SCC was less than 150,000 and reproduction rates began improving. “It was obvious as soon as we started with the robotics that we had to get the next two robots going,” said Adams. Two more robotic units were added a year later in December 2012. Currently, they milk 300 cows, mostly Holsteins, some Jerseys and a little of the other breeds with a rolling herd average of 26,500M 980F and 800P. The 4 robotic units milk 240 head and another 60 head are still milked in the old stanchion barn. Adaway Dairy now also includes Nathan’s sister, Katie and her husband Matt Hensley, and his brother, Joe and his fiancé, Danisha. They farm 900 acres raising corn, soybeans and alfalfa. They also raise all of their steers. The Adams Family was one of the recipients of “The Way We Live” Award at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. This award recognizes Iowa families for their hard work and love of farming. The families each exemplify dedication to animal agriculture and strong farm values. Nathan purchased Creek Emerson Derissa-ET EX-91 in 2006. Derissa’s descendents include two bulls currently in AI, 566HO1275 Adaway All Star 1553-Red-ET and 014HO07472 Adaway SS Doubleshot, along with several high GTPI heifers. Nathan serves on the Fayette County Holstein Breeders board and has served as president and the Fayette County DHIA board and has served as vice president. He is a member of Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Little Turkey. Nathan has three children, Kole, 8, Luke, 6, and Maggie, 3.

Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Katelyn Goldsmith Hometown: Earlville, IA High School: Beckman Catholic High School Class Size: 73 Farm Name: Goldsmith Family Dairy Farm Major: Dairy Science Minor: Sustainability Why did you decide to attend ISU? I decided to attend ISU because of the highquality education that I would receive, the great reputation of the university and its alumni, and the many opportunities it provided from studying abroad to student research and everything in between. What has been your most memorable college experience? One of my most memorable experiences so far was having the opportunity to volunteer with the Dairy Science Club and run the I Milked a Cow booth and give parlor talks at the State Fair. Helping thousands of people connect to the industry that I love while sharing the real facts about what we do was nothing short of amazing! What has been your favorite course? My favorite course has been ANS 337 Lactation. I enjoyed this course since it delves into the physiology of lactation and how what we do affects the mammary system starting at the cellular level and then onto the whole system. What are your future career goals? Through extension and outreach, my goal is to be working closely with researchers, producers, and industry professionals to discover economical and sustainable solutions to difficult issues facing the industry in order to ensure a viable future for dairy farming families.

Wapsi-Ana Holsteins, Brown Swiss & Jerseys, Anamosa Front Row l to r: Past President Trent Henkes, Secretary Paula Smith, Treasurer Shellie Volker, President Carl Mensen, Vice President Dan Moon; Back Row: Matt Henkes, Kevin Fossum, Walt Wessel, Jeff Hammerand, Paul Stempfle, Dan Bolin, Larry Landsgard, Doug Lyons, Mark Knudtson, Jennifer Hamlett (representing Bob Rahe) and Heather Moore. Dear Iowa Holstein Association, I would like to thank you for your generosity and selecting me as a recipient of the Iowa Holstein Association Scholarship. Currently, I am a sophomore majoring in Dairy Science and Agriculture and Society. I chose to attend Iowa State University for the agricultural programs and stupendous faculty. After reflecting on the continuation of my education, I have come to the realization that Iowa State University was my best choice. The costs of higher education have become very expensive and having the opportunity to offset these costs is appreciated greatly. With my college degree path, it looks as if I will find many ways to give back to the community that has played a pivotal role in my life. As I look for occupations for the future, I would like to work within agricultural communications and/or governmental policy, specifically within the dairy industry, to work for and speak on behalf of the hard-working dairy farmers I grew up around. My involvement in college has allowed me to gain communication skills, improve my speaking abilities, meet many new faces and stay involved within the dairy community. I have a passion for spreading the great knowledge the dairy industry has to offer, and I look forward to what my future entails. I am honored to have received this scholarship and appreciate the monetary gift. Sincerely, Cynthia Hamlett
Wapsi-Ana Holsteins, Brown Swiss, and Jerseys is owned and operated by Doug and Jody Fairbanks and their children Pierce, Abby, Kaylee, and Luke. Their nephew, Josh, also works on the farm alongside his wife, Samantha, who own and register cattle under the Fairholm prefix. In 1999, they bought the farm that his parents, Charles and Carol, had been renting. Since then they have made multiple improvements which include building a new freestall and parlor in 2015. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family, and where the herd is one unit, and everyone is using the same prefix, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Otherwise, when animals are bred in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique breeder. 6. ment and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as a single exhibitor for all group classes. Each exhibitor must be a junior member of the Iowa Holstein Association and be 9 years of age as of January 1 of the current year and under the age of 21 years as of January 1 of the current year. 2. Any entries received after July 1 will not be charged a late fee. However, late entries will not be included in the show catalog. 7. Ribbons at the State Junior Holstein Show will be awarded in ribbon groups. Animals that June 2019 Iowa Holstein Herald 11
place first and second in their class shall be named Junior All-Iowa and Reserve Junior AllIowa. 8. Juniors must show their own animals. Excusing a member from personally exhibiting his or her animal(s) defeats one of the most important objectives of Holstein work. Hence, the Junior Advisory Committee does not approve the use of substitute showmen except in extreme cases. If a youth is injured or seriously ill at the time of the show or is involved in another activity with a non-flexible schedule at which their presence is mandatory, the youth may submit an application for a substitute showman. The substitute showman must be a Holstein junior member and approved in advance of the show by the advisory committee. 9. Production awards - There will be one for top milk based on 305 day or less actual records. The most recently completed lactation record will be used unless the current incomplete lactation record is higher. The winning cow’s record cannot be used more than once. Production information must be submitted to Jeff Hammerand and will be accepted until the start of the show. 10. For the Best Udder of Show, the judge will select one cow in each class, then the winner will be selected from that group. 11. Showmanship classes will be held at the completion of the show with the following order: seniors, intermediates, then juniors. The Showmanship classes will be divided into three classes. The junior division will be for exhibitors 9-12 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Intermediate exhibitors will be 13-16 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Senior exhibitors will be 17-21 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. The award can be won by an exhibitor only once in each division. They must have shown this animal in a previous class. 12. A Novice Class will be held for junior members younger than the age of 9 years as of January 1 of the current year. The animal can be another junior member’s project. The class will be judged 100% on the showmanship of the individual exhibitor. There is no entry fee for this class. 13. The State Holstein Junior Advisory Committee reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules of the Iowa Junior Holstein Show and will arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions or differences in regard thereto arising out of or in connection with the junior show. All possible rule infractions should be brought to the attention of the Junior Advisory Committee at least one hour before the show. Once the class is placed, all placings will stand. 12 June 2019 Iowa Holstein Herald

June 2019 Iowa Holstein Herald 19
Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed. from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring. The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition. At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting. It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable. The following practices are a violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with and irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping” c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag) 3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude prac20 June 2019 Iowa Holstein Herald
tices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other similar apparatus to fill the rumen b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline. 4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters 5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) 6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches 7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics. 8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation. Monitoring and Enforcement Procedures for Iowa Holstein Association (IHA) Show Ring Policy District Shows 1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted. State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair 1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him. 2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary. State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair 1. When hosting the State Show not held with the Iowa State Fair, the district is responsible for all management of the show including working with the Ethics Committee to enforce the IHA Show Ring Policy. 2. An Ethics Committee will be formed for the State Show. It shall consist of three people. One person will be from the IHA Show Committee and the other two will be from the host district. 3. The Ethics Committee will observe activities prior to and during the show and along with show management, receive complaints of alleged violations. 4. Any complaints of suspected violations must be made before the conclusion of the show. 5. The Ethics Committee or it’s designates has the authority to perform and review results of the following: a. An ultrasound examination of the udder prior to milk out b. Milk out of any individual cow
c. Collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids d. Use of any other non lethal technology that may be useful in determining violations e. Delivery for the purpose of inspection or laboratory analysis, at any time, of any hypodermic needles, syringes, swabs, cloths, other devices, dispensers, samples of medicines, or other preparations in any form, in possession or control of the exhibitor, fitter, agents or persons acting on behalf of the exhibitor. f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches. 6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/her animals. 8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee. 9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination. 10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them.
11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting. 12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges. 13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties. 14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing. 15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA. 16. Under the Rules of the Show, the exhibitor agrees as final and to abide by any decisions of IHA in regards to violations of the IHA Show Ring Policy and resulting penalties. Penalties for Violations of IHA Show Ring Policy 1. 1st Offense - minimum of receiving a letter of reprimand to a maximum of one year suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), fitter(s), and/or other representatives, either individually or combination thereof from all IHA state sponsored shows. 2.
