President’s Perspective
Hey everybody it is hard to believe it has been a year ago when I wrote my first article. How fast the year has gone and how much it has changed. This spring field work was awesome, not to often do we get two consecutive weeks to plant corn. Last year at this time we were hoping for better milk price, Finally in November and December we were given some hope. That was short lived and now we are hitting rock bottom due to Covid-19. The bad news is I don’t see this virus going away. We are going to have to learn how to live with it or get some type of immunity to it. We don’t have to live in fear, but rather live smarter. With everything that is happening We (the Iowa Holstein Association) are moving forword with our yearly activities. But keep in mind, we will cancel if we feel the safety or members will be compromised. So keep in touch with our Facebook page, website and a mailing for all updates. This would include District Shows, State Show and the State Picnic. The State Show is to be held in Des Moines with the Iowa State Fair. We should know by June 15th if it will be changed. The date and location of our State Picnic and Committee Meetings will be announced after a decision is made regarding the State Fair. Remember to respect your neighbors air space even after things get back to (normal) so we can all continue doing what we love to do. We have to keep hoping that the day will come soon that we will be able to be profitable feeding the world. There is a lot of issues with the American food chain that need to be addressed before we will see true long term prosperity. So until next time be safe, live smart not scared, and enjoy your summer. Thank you for supporting the Holstein association Carl Mensen
Attention Juniors!

2020 Iowa Holstein Princess
Hello Holstein Enthusiasts, My name is Amber Engelken and I am currently your Iowa Holstein Princess. I am the 18-year-old daughter of Tom and Cherrie Engelken from Earlville. Alongside my parents and two sisters, Nicole and Amanda, we milk 220 cows. The herd consists predominantly of Holsteins, with a handful of crossbreds, Ayrshires, and Brown Swiss. I am currently a senior at Maquoketa Valley and will be attending Iowa State University this fall to major in Agricultural Exploration. I have been very involved in 4-H, FFA, and the Delaware County Dairy Promoters. Through these organizations, I have been able to represent Iowa on the national level. This past fall I had the honor of competing at NAILE for dairy quiz bowl where our team placed third. Through FFA I also represented Iowa at the National FFA Convention in the Dairy Judging CDE where my team placed sixth. Unfortunately, because of the Coronavirus, I haven’t been able to meet many of you. I’m hoping that the state reopens soon so we can meet at events this summer! If you need me for anything, don’t hesitate to reach out. My email is amberengelken@gmail.com and my number is 563-929-6035. Best Wishes, Amber Engelken
Iowa Holstein Association & COVID-19 COVID-19 continues to offer us challenges, and we are continuing to monitor the situation.
District Shows - As of now, the District Shows are still scheduled. State Show & State Picnic - Our State Show is scheduled to be held at the 2020 Iowa State Fair. The Fair will be making a decision if the Fair will be held or cancelled by June 15th. If the State Fair is cancelled and if we are allowed to hold a Show, the Association would then host the State Show at West Union. The Junior Show would be held on August 13 and the Open Show would be held on August 14. The State Picnic, Committee Meetings and Board Meeting would also be held in conjunction with the Shows. If the State Fair is held, then the State Picnic will be held at a later date in August with a location to be determined.
Please continue to watch our Facebook page and our website for the latest information. Also watch your mail later this summer for complete details on the State Show and Picnic!
Iowa Holstein Association Board Meeting Minutes President Carl Mensen called the Board of Directors meeting of the Iowa Holstein Association to order at 11:30 a.m. on March 20, 2020 at Carl and Lisa Mensen’s home, Guttenberg, Iowa. All board members were present except for Dan Bolin, District 2 and Jim Vierhout, District 4; Heather Moore, District 8, and Tom Simon, District 8. Doug Lyons moved to seat Joe Gibbs for Tom Simon, seconded by Jeff Hammerand. Motion carried. Doug Lyons moved to approve the minutes of the November 2, 2019 and February 22, 2020 board meetings as printed, seconded by Kevin Fossum. Motion carried. Treasurer Shellie Volker reported a checking account balance of $26,477.07. Paul Stempfle moved to approve the Treasurer’s report, seconded by Walt Wessel. Motion carried. Herald - The June issue will include Midwest Holsteins. Paula is going to see why the mailing took so long to reach our members since we have a periodical permit. There is a possibility of the states involved meeting again to discuss any possible changes. Junior - Jeff Hammerand commented that the junior convention went well. They are making plans for attending the National Convention and looking at various options for travelling to it. They will be finalizing the contestants soon. Membership - Shellie Volker reported that she has sent two mailings to remind any unpaid members to pay their 2020 membership. Most likely some of the remaining will not pay until show season. Sale - Carl Mensen reported that the committee discussed some possible changes to consider for next year. Items discussed were adding a few group lots of 3-5 head and the possibility of offering some colored breeds to our sale, however, they would not include any Brown Swiss since they still have their own sale. Also they would like to have more people select cattle to increase coverage. Trent Henkes moved to allow colored breeds to be sold in our state sale, seconded by Doug Lyons. Motion carried. It was then decided to re-examine our calf raffle with the addition of colored breeds to include a few in the raffle, and not just Holstein heifers. This year’s sale had to be changed to online only through Cowbuyer due to COVID-19. Cowbuyer contacted all of the consignors to see if they wanted their animals sold in the sale. The sale will conclude on Tuesday night, March 24. Show - Paul Stempfle reported that the State Show will be held at the State Fair this year. Eric Topp will be the judge for the Open Show. The Summer Junior 2 Year Old Cow class has been added. They will plan to find sponsor(s) for Randy Blodgett and a major sponsor for the awards. The 2021 State Show will be July 20-21 in West Union. Matt Henkes moved that if the 2020 Iowa State Fair would be cancelled that, if possible, that the State Show would be held at West Union, seconded by Walt Wessel. Motion carried. Program Development and Management - At this time because of Covid-19, the committee doesn’t have anyone who wants to commit to hosting the state picnic. Mark Knudtson moved to approve the committee reports, seconded by Walt Wessel. Motion carried. The meeting broke at 12:15 pm for lunch and the Facebook live calf raffle drawing. The meeting resumed at 12:47 pm. New Business - The various recommendations presented by the Strategic Planning Committee were reviewed and discussed. Kevin Fossum moved to raise the base adult membership from $25 to $35, seconded by Trent Henkes. Motion carried. Matt Henkes moved to
adjust the financial support to the juniors to include giving them all of their membership fees and $500 that they would have received for the food stand if the sale would have been held and with the stipulation that if the junior association would need additional financial support in the future that it would be given to them, seconded by Mark Knudtson. Motion carried. The association’s insurance policy was reviewed. There are some items that can be removed from our policy. Carl Mensen will review the policy with our insurance agent. The show committee should try to solicit sponsorship for the awards presented at the State Show and sponsorship for Randy Blodgett. The limit for the class awards should be set to $35. The corporate sponsorship recommendations were discussed. The following levels are as follows: Honorable Mention - $100, Champion - $250, Grand Champion - $500, and Supreme Champion - $1000. Joe Gibbs moved to adopt this new program, seconded by Trent Henkes. Motion carried. Matt Henkes moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Tom Holub. Motion carried with adjournment at 2:05 pm. Respectfully submitted, Paula Smith, Secretary
Iowa State University
Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Rachel Grober Hometown: New Hampton, Iowa High School: New Hampton High School Class Size: 83 Farm Name: Grober Dairy Majors: Agricultural Business, Economics, and Supply Chain Management Why did you decide to attend ISU? I was attracted to Iowa State University based on both its academic reputation as well as knowing several others from my high school whom I respected attending here ahead of me. I am confident when saying Iowa State has lived up to its academic reputation and more. During the time I have spent here, I have been lucky to have access to a variety of programs that are committed to helping me enhance my range of knowledge. What has been your most memorable college experience? One of my most memorable college experiences include volunteering at the I Milked A Cow booth for the Dairy Science Club during the Iowa State Fair. One of my favorite things to do is share my dairy story with consumers. Being able to serve as the connection between producers and consumers is a privilege I will not soon forget and I will be able to use these skills as I work towards progressing our industry for years to come. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course so far at Iowa State has been Econ 101 - Intro to Microeconomics. I really enjoyed this course because it challenged me to analyze and predict economic models that determine people’s behavior in the marketplace. As a result, I have been able to apply this to what I already know in the dairy industry to identify consumer trends. What are your future career goals? After graduation, I hope to obtain a career in which I explore issues in agriculture and discover innovative solutions to improving global food production and sustainability around the world. I know this is going to be a huge challenge, but thankfully challenges excite me and empower me to do more. I truly believe that it is our job to feed the world and I am so excited to have been able to find something that touches my head and my heart and have it be something I truly believe in. My goal, specifically, is to analyze the supply chain from beginning to end to ensure we as agriculturalists are integrating environmentally sound choices.

The substitute showman must be a Holstein junior member and approved in advance
of the show by the advisory committee. 7. Production award - There will be one for top milk based on 305 day or less actual records. The award will be based on records sent in with the initial entry. For the Best Udder of Show, the judge will select one cow in each class, then the winner will be selected from that group. 9. The Showmanship Contest will be held on Friday, August 14 at 5:00 pm. Showmanship age divisions will be the same as the Iowa State Fair Youth Show. The junior division is for those who have completed 5th or 6th grades. The intermediate division are juniors who have completed 7th and 8th grades. The senior division is for juniors who have completed 9th grade and older. Please note that the usual age divisions for showmanship will be used at the district shows. The award can be won by an exhibitor only once in each division. 10. The Novice Show is open to anyone ages 5-11. Entry must be made by 7:00 a.m. on the day of the show at the Cattle Barn Office. The Novice Show will be held on Thursday, August 13 at 11:45 a.m. The calf must be born after November 30, 2019. The class will be judged 25% on the calf and 75% on the showmanship of the individual exhibitor. All breeds will show together. The show will be divided into three divisions based on age. The age break will be determined at the show. Previous winners are not eligible to compete. 11. The State Holstein Junior Advisory Committee reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules of the Iowa Junior Holstein Show and will arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions or differences in regard thereto arising out of or in connection with the junior show. All possible rule infractions should be brought to the attention of the Junior Advisory Committee at least one hour before the show. Once the class is placed, all placings will stand. 12. Rules, regulations and health requirements of the Iowa State Fair 4-H and/or FFA Dairy Shows will apply to animals in the Iowa Junior Holstein Show. Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed. from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring. The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition. At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting. It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable. The following practices are a violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with and irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping” c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag) 3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other 8 June 2020 Iowa Holstein Herald
similar apparatus to fill the rumen. b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline. 4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters 5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) 6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/ substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches. 7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics. 8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation. Monitoring and Enforcement Procedures for Iowa Holstein Association (IHA) Show Ring Policy District Shows 1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted. State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair 1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him. 2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary. State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair 1. When hosting the State Show not held with the Iowa State Fair, the district is responsible for all management of the show including working with the Ethics Committee to enforce the IHA Show Ring Policy. 2. An Ethics Committee will be formed for the State Show. It shall consist of three people. One person will be from the IHA Show Committee and the other two will be from the host district. 3. The Ethics Committee will observe activities prior to and during the show and along with show management, receive complaints of alleged violations. 4. Any complaints of suspected violations must be made before the conclusion of the show. 5. The Ethics Committee or it’s designates has the authority to perform and review results of the following: a. An ultrasound examination of the udder prior to milk out b. Milk out of any individual cow c. Collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids d. Use of any other non lethal technology that may be useful in determining violations e. medicines, or other preparations in any form, in possession or control of the exhibitor, fitter, agents or persons acting on behalf of the exhibitor. f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches. 6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/ her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/ her animals. 8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee. 9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination. 10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them. 11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting. 12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges. 13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties. 14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing. 15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA. 16. Under the Rules of the Show, the exhibitor agrees as final and to abide by any decisions of IHA in regards to violations of the IHA Show Ring Policy and resulting penalties. Penalties for Violations of IHA Show Ring Policy 1. 1st Offense - minimum of receiving a letter of reprimand to a maximum of one year suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), fitter(s), and/or other representatives, either individually or combination thereof from all IHA state sponsored shows. 2. Master Breeder Award Ted Becker, Center Point
Ted grew up on his family farm and was active in 4-H winning many dairy awards, a national meat animal production award and was the 9th high individual at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest one year. Ted and his wife, Rita, were married on December 29, 1953, and they purchased and moved to their present farm in Linn County. Because of the need to fix up the farm and convert it into a milking facility, Rita gave up her banking job to help Ted. Ted and Rita became involved in many community activities. Ted was a 4-H club leader for 17 years and a Catholic Order of Foresters member and served on the church board and county youth council. Rita was active in enough various activities to be listed in “Who’s Who in America”. They are the parents of three children, Dennis, Deborah and Doug. When the children joined 4-H, the Ted-Dear prefix was decided upon which stood for Ted and his Dear family. In 1968, Kambric Happy Roburke was purchased as a bull calf in Illinois. He won the Junior Yearling Bull Class at the 1969 Central National Holstein Show and was an All-American nomination. During the next three years, 16 heifers were purchased in Pennsylvania. Three were sired by Hill Top Apollo Ivanhoe and classified EX, 12 others became VG and as Ted says, “the last one was a dog.” In 1971, Big Rock Supreme Gloria was purchased at the Ivanhoe Heritage Sale in Pennsylvania. Ted exhibited her at the 1971 National Convention Show which was hosted by Iowa in Des Moines. She was named Grand Champion of the Convention Show and also won Grand Champion honors at the 1971 Iowa State Fair Show. Gloria went

on to become EX-94-5E EX-MS with lifetime production over 218,000M and 5%F. Roburke also won at the State Fair and was later sold to a bull stud. It was a great year for the Becker show string as Deb’s junior heifer calf sired by Roburke, was nominated for All-American that same year. Ted said that their children while showing as junior members won their share, perhaps more than they should have or maybe not as much as they could have, but they all had fun. In 1987, they exhibited the third place Best Three Females at Central National Holstein Show after a successful Iowa show season. One of the cows was Teddear Grand Ivanhoe Tiffany EX-93-3E, the 1st place Bred and Owned Female in the 5 Year Old Cow class. Another member was Teddear Valiant Frances EX-93 and at the time she was classified, the classifier said that she was Valiant’s highest udder breakdown daughter. The third member was Teddear Montgomery Finesse EX-90. Then in 1988, Frances was a member of a Get of Sire that was an All-American nomination. Tiffany returned to Madison in 1989 along with her maternal sister, Teddear Tony Trigger EX-92 DOM, placing 2nd and were an All-American Produce of Dam nomination. Teddear St Pine Taffy Trish EX-92 DOM won the milk production award in the 5 Year Old Cow class. The Holstein herd was dispersed in June of 1995. Ted continues to farm with his son, Doug, and his grandsons. They now have a beef herd and farm 2200 acres. Ted received the Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award in 1991. He was active in the Iowa Holstein Association serving as president, vice president and show committee chair, junior advisory chair, board member and Holstein Futurity secretary/treasurer for 5 years.
