President’s Perspective

As the new president of the Iowa Holstein Association I would like to thank Carl for his leadership and I will do my best to guide the Association for the next two years. As most of you know, our State Sale added other breeds this year. I’m sure we will have discussion on whether to continue this. If you have an opinion one way or the other, please let a board member or sale committee member know. Thanks to Henkeseen Holsteins for consigning our top two sellers this year. We had another successful raffle. Congratulations to Landon Guese for winning the grand prize, and for selecting a heifer from Brian Harbaugh and Rob Krohlow. Many thanks to Carl Menson for running the raffle. Also thanks to the consignors, buyers, sponsors and those who supported the sale and raffle. Another exciting event is our State Show. It will be held in at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in West Union on August 3rd and 4th. There is always good competition and fellowship. Thanks to District 1 and Paul Stempfle for organizing this event. Be sure to attend our State Picnic on August 28th at Dan and Lynn Bolin’s New Day Dairy Farm in Clarksville. Check out their robotic barn and unique agritourism venture. Thank you, Dan Moon

2021 Iowa Holstein Princess

Hello Holstein Enthusiasts, My name is Brooke Courtney and I am serving as your Iowa Holstein Princess. I am the 19-year old daughter of Scott and Amy Courtney from Ridgeway. My family and I had a herd dispersal back in 2017, however that did not stop me and my brothers from continuing on and being active within the industry. We currently have a small herd of about 30 head consisting of registered holstein cattle. I recently finished my freshman year at Iowa State University where I am majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Public Relations. Throughout years as a junior holstein member, I have been actively involved in 4-H, FFA, and the Winneshiek County Dairy Promoters. Being involved in all of these activities has provided me opportunities to represent Iowa at district, state, and national levels. I was fortunate enough to participate at the World Dairy Expo representing Iowa during the dairy judging contest in 2018. I look forward to meeting all of you during my reign throughout the upcoming year. If you need me for anything, please feel free to reach out. My email is brooke6courtney6@gmail.com and my phone number is 563-387-7636. Best Wishes, Brooke Courtney

Hall of Fame Award | Jeff Hammerand, Epworth

Hard-working, passionate for the dairy industry, mentors for the next generation, and lovers of the Holstein cow are just a few phrases that describe the recipients of this year’s Hall of Fame Award. Jeff grew up on a dairy farm and enjoyed showing cattle, dairy judging, and studying cow magazines on the way to and occasionally even during school. Tammy on the other hand was a city girl, but Jeff ’s love and passion for the Holstein cow quickly rubbed off on her. It didn’t take them long to realize they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together and they married shortly after high school. Tammy served at the local hospital, Jeff traveled the county breeding dairy cattle, and together they managed a dairy herd. However, their dream to build a Holstein herd on a farm of their very own ran deep. Their dreams came true when they purchased their farm in 1995. Over the years, they have bred and developed a quality herd of Registered Holsteins. Jeff and Tammy spend countless hours each year giving back to the next generation of dairy

enthusiasts. Tammy is a past 4-H leader, and they are both members of the 4-H Dairy Committee. Jeff has been coaching the 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Judging teams for several years. Under his guidance, Dubuque County has had several victories at both the state and national level. However, his coaching doesn’t stop at that organization or even species for that matter. He has helped coach several FFA Dairy Judging and Horse Judging teams as well. Although Jeff may be the one traveling to these contests to coach the kids, Tammy is the one behind the scenes. Whether it be organizing lunch stands, collecting supplies for junior conventions, or holding down the fort at home running the farm, she helps make it all possible. The Hammerand’s are actively involved in Holstein at the district, state, and national level. Jeff has held various offices including President of District 8, Tammy is the secretary of the Iowa Holstein Auxiliary, and together they are co-chairs of the Junior Advisory Committee. As advisors, they assist juniors in planning their state sale lunch stands, running junior shows, organizing junior conventions, and much more. In addition to being advisors, he coaches the Iowa Holstein Jeopardy and Quiz Bowl teams. For them, it is not all about how many championships Iowa Juniors can bring home, even though they have brought home several under their direction, but instead it is about fostering skills such as leadership, knowledge, decision making, determination, and passion that will stick with these juniors for the rest of their lives. Their commitment to Holstein does not end there. In 2014, this year’s recipients ran the dairy bar when Iowa hosted the National Convention. Several attendees described it as one of the best National Convention dairy bars of all time and they still get compliments on it to this day. They have instilled their passion for the dairy industry and desire to give back into their daughter, Jessie. Jessie is a Research Scientist at ABS Global where she works on gene editing in bovine and porcine. She remains actively involved in dairy organizations and activities including helping Home of Terrick Holsteins Terry & Kelly Eick her parents coach. 1105 Ivory Ave. • Plainfield, IA 50666 Phone: 319-275-4719 It truly is a family Fax: 319-275-4501 affair. Dairy Science Student Profile

Name: Amanda Engelken Hometown: Earlville, Iowa High School: Maquoketa Valley High School Class Size: 48 Farm Name: Delta Acres Dairy Majors: Animal Science

Why did you decide to attend ISU? Iowa State has a very strong Animal Science program, and has a very high placement rate for graduating seniors. ISU is also well known for their Dairy Science program. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable experience was competing at the World Dairy Expo Dairy Judging Contest with Kaskaskia College. It was one of the longest days of my life, but nothing has beaten the excitement of the awards ceremony and seeing all of the hard work pay off. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course was ANS 225, Intro to Swine Science. Pigs are kind of my new found love in college. I like being able to learn about a whole new species and learning about a different aspect of animal agriculture. What are your future career goals? My goals are to stay within the dairy industry, working within nutrition. I also want to stay involved in my family’s dairy farm.

Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy

The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed. from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring. The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition. At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting. It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable. THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES ARE A VIOLATION OF IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SHOW RING POLICY 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with and irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping” c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag) 3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other

similar apparatus to fill the rumen. b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline. 4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters 5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) 6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/ substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches. 7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics. 8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation. MONITORING AND ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES FOR IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION (IHA) SHOW RING POLICY District Shows 1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted. State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair 1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him. 2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary. State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair 1. When hosting the State Show not held with the Iowa State Fair, the district is responsible for all management of the show including working with the Ethics Committee to enforce the IHA Show Ring Policy. 2. An Ethics Committee will be formed for the State Show. It shall consist of three people. One person will be from the IHA Show Committee and the other two will be from the host district. 3. The Ethics Committee will observe activities prior to and during the show and along with show management, receive complaints of alleged violations. 4. Any complaints of suspected violations must be made before the conclusion of the show. 5. The Ethics Committee or it’s designates has the authority to perform and review results of the following: a. An ultrasound examination of the udder prior to milk out b. Milk out of any individual cow c. Collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids d. Use of any other non lethal technology that may be useful in determining violations e. Delivery for the purpose of inspection or laboratory analysis, at any time, of any hypodermic needles, syringes, swabs, cloths, other devices, dispensers, samples of

medicines, or other preparations in any form, in possession or control of the exhibitor, fitter, agents or persons acting on behalf of the exhibitor. f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches. 6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/ her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/ her animals. 8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee. 9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination. 10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them. 11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting. 12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges. 13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties. 14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing. 15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA. 16. Under the Rules of the Show, the exhibitor agrees as final and to abide by any decisions of IHA in regards to violations of the IHA Show Ring Policy and resulting penalties. Penalties for Violations of IHA Show Ring Policy 1. 1st Offense - minimum of receiving a letter of reprimand to a maximum of one year suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), fitter(s), and/or other representatives, either individually or combination thereof from all IHA state sponsored shows. 2. Obituary

Everett Silas Sollien, 89, of Decorah, Iowa, passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family on the night of April 3, 2021. Everett was born in Spring Grove, Minn., to Syver and Florence (Rauk) Sollien on September 16, 1931. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1949. Everett grew up farming with his family. Outside of his enlistment in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, he spent the rest of his life committed to his vocation. He married Lois Lommen on January 20, 1957. The couple farmed in rural Spring Grove from 1957 until 1959.On a very cold, snowy March 1959, morning, they moved to the farm where they would raise their family and live out their lives. Everett loved his Holstein cattle, and was very active in the Iowa Holstein Association. He served many roles in church and community organizations. Everett was a lifelong member of the Highland Lutheran Church. He was a quiet, humble man of great compassion and integrity. He would frequently refer to Lois as, “The best thing that ever happened to me.” He loved Lois, and the family they created. One of his favorite roles was that of Grandpa. Everett will be deeply missed by his son Mark (Darlene) of Decorah, four daughters: Mary Sacquitne (Kevin Lensch) of Decorah, Michele (Lynn) Hardin of Jefferson, Iowa, Marsha (Ken) Sawle of Rushford, Minn., and Monica (Steve) Bierschenk of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; sisters-in-law Margaret Ranzenberger of Caledonia, Minn., and Pat Sollien of Rochester, Minn. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Daniel (Alicia) and Adam Sacquitne; Tyler, Travis (Darcy), and Taylor Hardin; Isaac, Savannah, and Saylre Sawle; and Jacob, Gabriel and Rachael Bierschenk; two great-grandchildren, Eli and Ella Hardin; and many nieces and nephews. Everett was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, brothers Floyd and Arden Sollien, sister-in-law Mary Lou Sollien, and brother-in-law Marty Ranzenberger.

Obituary

Bruce Engelbart, 69, of Anamosa, died unexpectedly at Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa. Bruce Herman Engelbart was born February 19, 1952 in Monticello, IA, the son of Marvin and Elfrieda (Thomsen) Engelbart. Bruce graduated with the class of 1970, one of the first classes to attend the new Anamosa High School. He was active in FFA, 4-H, and Raider football. On August 31, 1973 he married Sherry Huerter at St. Patrick’s.Together with Bruce’s family, they operated Amberglo Holstein Dairy Farms until 1985. Bruce went on to specialize in CAD (computer assisted drafting) and had a career helping develop patented technologies at various corporations including General Electric, Lockheed Martin, Seagate, and most recently John Deere. Throughout his second career, Bruce’s passion for farming remained. He took pride most recently in partnering with Nathan Shoop in planning his crops. A lifelong resident of the Anamosa area, he was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, The Knights of Columbus, Jones County Dairy Farmers, and various other dairy organizations. He volunteered with the Jones County Democrats and could be seen manning their booth at the Great Jones County Fair. He enjoyed art, card games, the oldies, classic movies, cheering for the Hawkeyes, and taking on home projects (renovating every structure on the farm including the family home). He will be remembered as a genuine soul of quirky humor who loved and cared for the land, took joy in his children and grandchildren, and provided for those he loved. He took particular pride in the life, family, and home he built with his wife through years of hard work and partnership. He will be forever honored by his wife of 47 years, Sherry, his children Angie (Matt) Eckel, Stillwater, MN, Erin (Eli) Vogen, Afton, MN, and Andrew (fiancée Kelsey Sykora), Chicago, IL, grandchildren Isaiah and Whit Eckel, and Hasle, Sawyer, and Ole Vogen, brothers Steve (Malinda), Anamosa, Robin (Sue), Marion, and Warren (Tracy), Marion, his stepmother Shirley Engelbart, Ocala, FL, brothers-in-law Bill (Sue) Huerter, Peosta and Jim (Karina) Huerter, Rochester, MN, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rita the robot (the first AMS Galaxy in Iowa) has milked their 120 cows since 2015 in a new naturally vented freestall barn with a GuestBarn overlooking it. Guests from across the country come to #sleepwiththecows and experience the grandeur of the Holstein cow. As a quaint private space the GuestBarn will not be open for visiting during the Picnic.
