President’s Perspective As a busy summer season winds down, I think about all the activities the Iowa Holstein members had a chance to be involved in including conventions, shows, sales, meetings etc. Another large delegation of Iowa members attended the National Holstein Convention in Michigan in June. Once again our Iowa Juniors proved their dominance in quiz bowl competitions by winning both the Junior and Senior divisions. Congratulations to them, their coaches Jeff and Jessica Hammerand and all the kids who participated in the contests! Also congratulations to Mary Scott for being named a National Distinguished Junior Member Finalist. I'd also like to congratulate Doug and Lynette Lyons on receiving the Master Breeder Award at the National Red & White Convention this summer. I'd like to thank the Mormann Family for hosting our State Holstein Picnic and letting everyone view their beautiful facilities. At our committee meetings that day, the sale committee recommended to not have our traditional state Holstein sale in March and instead look into possibly having a video sale at the State Convention in February. I would like to get everyone's input on this to help make sure this is what is best for our association. Please contact myself or Carl Menson with any comments or suggestions you have concerning this issue. The state board will be discussing this and making plans for the upcoming year at our November board meeting on November 17. You may also contact any state board member with your thoughts. Personally I felt we had a successful, well-attended, and profitable sale and calf raffle last year especially considering the dairy economy. I look forward to hearing your opinions. Trent Henkes, President

Alternate Iowa Holstein Princess
Hello everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic and eventful summer! My summer months flew by so quickly, it’s hard to believe I’m already a few weeks into my sophomore year at Iowa State University. I enjoyed handing out ribbons for multiple events this summer with Amanda, and a huge congrats goes out to everyone who took part in showing. In addition to that, my internship at AMPI went very well, and I learned a lot along the way. After my internship concluded, I began my preparation for the Iowa Dairy Princess Contest. Through the contest, I had the opportunity to improve my professional speaking abilities and make new friends at the same time. I know Jessica Schmitt and Grace Howe will do a great job representing the dairy community over the next year. It was an honor to represent the Holstein breed, and I look forward to representing everyone and the dairy community in the years to come. Following the contest, I spent 7 days helping the Iowa State Dairy Science Club with the I Milked a Cow booth (IMAC). Speaking to consumers and helping them learn more about the dairy community made me realize my passion for the dairy industry to a greater extent, and I’m predicting positive outcomes being in charge of IMAC next fall. Recently, I added on to my degree of study at Iowa State. I am now double majoring in Agriculture and Society and Dairy Science. In addition to classes, I’m staying busy with my involvement in the Dairy Science Club and the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Club. For work, I am involved with undergraduate research under Dr. Hugo Ramirez. I have done some work at the dairy farm, but most of my time thus far has been spent in the laboratory. As my reign continues, I look forward to other events and speaking with consumers interested in the dairy community. If you would like to contact me, my phone number is (563) 608-9737 or my email is chamlett@iastate.edu. Yours respectfully, Cynthia Hamlett

Hello dairy enthusiasts! I have had an amazing seven months as your Iowa Holstein Princess. I had a great time handing out ribbons over the summer at the District 1, District 8, and the State Open and Junior Shows. Congratulations to all the exhibitors on your hard work over the summer! This was a great opportunity to meet more of you Holstein enthusiasts from around the state and northeast Iowa. I also attended the Youth Dairy Classic, and that is an amazing show to be involved in. The pride that the juniors show exhibiting their cattle is astonishing. The future of dairy is prosperous based on the joy shown by these exhibitors. I also competed in the Iowa Dairy Princess contest at the State Fair. It was an amazing opportunity to meet other ladies with the same passion for that dairy industry that I have. I wish the best of luck to Jessica Schmitt and Grace Howe as they begin their reigns representing Iowa’s dairy farm families. It’s hard to believe that I am almost halfway done with my first semester of college. I’ve been able to keep busy by joining the Ag Club and being on the dairy judging team. As fall continues on, I wish everyone a safe and bountiful harvest season, and good luck to all exhibitors at the fall shows. If you ever need anything, feel free to call me at 563-920-0488 or email me at amanadaengelken1@gmail.com. Sincerely, Amanda Engelken
Northeast Iowa Community College Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Becca Hermann Hometown: Manchester, IA High School: Dual Enrolled - Homeschooled & West Delaware High School Class Size: 75 Farm Name: Lindsey Creek Acres Major: Dairy Science Technology Why did I decide to go to NICC? Being homeschooled, though I had college credits from high school, I needed to attend a two year college because I did not have a high school diploma. NICC, Calmar provided a degree in dairy science close to home and with wonderful staff and facility who truly care about their students and want them to succeed. My most memorable college experience: Being inducted into Phi Theta Kappa honor society and seeing Dr. Wee, president of NICC, welcoming all the students as they arrived on the first day of classes. What has been my favorite course? Applied Animal Disease Prevention taught by Dr. Chris Harvey. I have learned how to detect when an animal is sick; what treatment will take place; how to check for certain diseases in animals. What are my future career goals? After NICC, I plan to attend SDSU for Dairy Manufacturing. I hope to return to the family farm and start our own on farm processing.

National Directors’ Report
The old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” sure holds true as we find ourselves heading into fall. Since the last June Midwest issue, this summer has been full of interesting activities for Holstein people. The Holstein USA Annual Meeting, hosted by the Michigan Association and held in Traverse, MI, proved to be an enjoyable time for all attending. A full schedule of Junior contests and activities kept the younger members busy. Delegates were informed of Association updates, and everyone enjoyed the Michigan scenery and hospitality. Congratulations to all individuals and herds recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. Directors Pat Maddox from California and Paul Buhr from Wisconsin were recognized for their six years of dedicated service to the Holstein industry as members of the Holstein USA board. Best Wishes go out to Paul on his recent success in the August primary election for the Wisconsin assembly. He now hopes for final victory in the November general election. Good Luck! Newly elected to the board were Bill Genasci from California and Robert Webb from Wisconsin. Incumbents John Marshman of New York and John Anderson of Idaho were re-elected for a second three-year term. As the depressed dairy economy continues to haunt farmers, there is still good news to be found in the midst of Junior Holstein work. Junior and senior Junior members continue to promote the registered Holstein cow with pride and enthusiasm. Just watch them and their work with their cattle at the county or state, district or national shows and one can find reason to trust in the future of the dairy industry. Our Midwest dairy family is very proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their leadership! Hopefully, many of you have watched the second edition of “Holstein America” aired on RFD TV. If you missed it, you can still watch it on the Holstein USA website. On the national level, registrations, transfers, and classifications are down from last year. However, there are positives to be found! Holstein Complete continues to offer financial savings, and field staff are always available for personal assistance. Agri-Tech Dairy Records Processing revenues are very positive, and the ongoing IT project is nearing completion. This has been a major undertaking and will benefit both staff and association members. A final positive development has been to see the successful efforts made in demanding the correct labeling of milk and refusing to allow milk substitutes to gain a share of the market with their false advertising. As World Dairy Expo approaches, it is time to plan ahead in order to make time for this experience of outstanding Holsteins on Parade! Here’s hoping everyone has a safe and bountiful Harvest! Your Midwest Officers and Directors, Boyd Schaufelberger, Corey Geiger, Mark Kerndt, Robert Webb and Dale Drendel

8 October 2018 Iowa Holstein Herald
Iowa Holstein Association Board Meeting Minutes President Trent Henkes called the Board of Directors meeting of the Iowa Holstein Association to order on August 18, 2018 at Mormann Dairy, New Vienna, Iowa. All members were present except for Doug Lyons and Lance Schutte, District 1; Jim Vierhout, District 4; Bob Rahe, District 8; Kevin Fossum, Joe Gibbs and Mark Knudtson and Paula Smith, Secretary/Editor. Carl Mensen moved to seat Koral Harbaugh for Doug Lyons, Brian Harbaugh for Lance Schutte, Kathy Demmer for Joe Gibbs, Rick Demmer for Mark Knudtson, Tom Holub for Jim Vierhout and Matt Henkes for Kevin Fossum, seconded by Katie Stoll. Motion carried. Paul Stempfle moved to approve the minutes of the March 17 meeting amended that Alan Graves gave the national report instead of Dennis Devore, seconded by Rick Demmer. Motion carried. Matt Henkes moved to approve the Treasurer's report, seconded by Dan Moon. Motion carried. Junior - Jeff Hammerand commented that the juniors had a tremendous showing at National Convention in Michigan. Both the Senior and Junior teams won the Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest. Mary Scott was DJM finalist and the Scrapbook won. They would like the state fair youth classes changed to match our classes. Showmanship maybe moved to Friday night which would free up time so there would not be so much of a rush to get done for the Governor Steer Show. Also it was discussed about combining the Junior and Open Shows when held at the Iowa State Fair. This would be beneficial if the youth show wouldn't have the same classes as our junior show. The Junior Convention will be held over Christmas Break again, but they are still looking at locations. The juniors will discuss and decide whether or not to have transfers and showing requirements to follow national rules or not. Membership - Shellie Volker reported that membership are down just slightly from last year. Membership mailings will be sent out the beginning of December. Rick Demmer moved to add a $10.00 late fee for those members paying after May 1st for both adult and juniors, seconded by Carl Mensen. Motion carried. This motion was passed to encourage members to join prior to the state and district shows. Program Development & Management - Tom Simon thanked the Mormann Family for hosting this year’s state picnic. He reported that the 2019 Iowa Holstein Convention will be held on Saturday, February 23 at the Wild Rose Casino, Emmetsburg. Show - Paul Stempfle commented that the state shows were excellent at the Iowa State Fair with 233 head exhibited in the open show and 163 head in the junior show. The committee recommends that the districts line up a photographer for the shows. They are taking nominations for judges for the Iowa State Fair. District 8 will host the 2019 State Open and Junior Shows. Everyone seems to like Randy Blodgett at the show for his work of videos and photos. His cost was $1200 for both shows. The Futurity report was given
by Matt Henkes. Seven head were exhibited in this year's Futurity with a total payout of $1,470. He encourages people to enter. The next Futurity entry deadline is February 1. Sale - Carl Mensen reported that the 2018 Iowa Spring Sale made approximately $1,800 with 47 head selling. They discussed not having a live sale in 2019, but restructuring the sale and having it with the State Convention. The committee recommends having 20-30 head of animals sell along with the heifer raffle. If we would have the sale like in the past, the date would be March 16, 2019. Katie Stoll moved to restructure and have a video sale at the State Convention if District 4 accepts or a video sale in March with calf raffle same as last year, seconded by Rick Demmer. Motion carried. National Association - Dennis Devore reported that members can place classified ads for $25 for 30 days on the Marketplace found on Holstein USA's website. Also he gave an update on the ARM robotic production records. New Business - The November Board Meeting will be on Saturday, November 17 at Gus & Tony’s Townhouse Cafe, West Union. The executive committee will meet at 10:00 a.m. with the board meeting to follow at 11:00 a.m. Katie Stoll moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Jeff Hammerand. Motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Shellie Volker
Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Jenna Chapman Hometown: Ruthven, Iowa High School: Emmetsburg Community School Class Size: 60 Farm Name: Hawkeye Holsteins Major: Agricultural Studies with a minor in Communication Studies Why did you decide to attend ISU? I chose Iowa State University because I knew they were ranked among one of the best agriculture schools with a 99% job placement rate. Additionally, knowing the Iowa State Dairy Science Club would be welcoming and I felt like it would be the best fit for me. I am glad to call this place home! What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable college experience has been learning to grow as a person and network with many different people from around the world. I have found some of my best friends and mentors. The sheer number of students involved with agriculture is amazing. I have found so many outlets for learning about other types of agriculture other than my own family experience. What has been your favorite course? My favorite class so far while attending ISU is AN S 335 Dairy Cattle Evaluation because I was with a lot of close friends judging dairy cattle. We also were able to take a few field trips with one being in Stillwater, Oklahoma. This competition was my first time being in the ring judging where I also came up with a seven place finish overall! What are your future career goals? My future career goals include the continued involvement in agriculture, specifically in the public relations area. Not only have I learned so much while at college, I have a passion for the industry as a whole. I plan to share my knowledge and experience about dairy and agriculture to the public that has misconceptions about the way of life that I have always known. I also enjoy being around the youth in agriculture. I hope to be able to use my communication skills to promote the youth in agriculture and mentor them along the way.
