Hall of Fame Award Matt Hamlett, Arlington
After five years behind a desk as an ag loan officer, Matt Hamlett decided the office life of coffee and meetings was NOT for him. He missed being in the barn with his Holsteins and the landscape of Fayette county corn, soybean and hay fields. The son of a Tim Hamlett and Myrna (Eden Hamlett) Jones, Matt grew up with a love of Holsteins. He and brothers Tom and Mark focused on crop farming and Holsteins with their “Uncle Chuck” and dad throughout their youth. His mentor was his grandfather, Forest Hamlett. Forest at one time had the largest Registered Holstein herd in Iowa. He was a dedicated dairy farmer who taught Matt about hard work and we believe is a source of many of Matt’s one liners! A dedicated 4-Her, Starmont FFA and Iowa Holstein Association member; Matt took advantage of every opportunity related to dairy. He showed numerous animals at the Fayette County Fair, Clayton County Fair, as well as District and state Holstein shows. In high school, Matt won second overall in the state 4-H Dairy Judging contest and was on the winning team. He also was named Iowa Distinguished Holstein Boy and on the state-winning Iowa FFA judging team. After graduating from Starmont High School, Matt went on to attend Iowa State University and major in Dairy Science (and fun). He was active in Alpa Gamma Rho Fraternity and Iowa State Dairy Science Club. He was on the Iowa State Dairy Judging team and was coached by Dr. C. Fred Foreman. The team was successful and Matt made some lifelong friends. After college, Matt decided he better not go home to the farm yet - especially since he hadn’t found a wife. He took an office gig at Brenton Bank in Marshalltown. One of the secretaries thought he would be a good match for her friends’ daughter. A blind date was set up for Matt and a woman named Jana. They went out one time, then Matt asked her out again because he knew she was cute but couldn’t remember what Jana looked like! Although she had no background with milking cows or picking up rock (not done in Marshall County) - she was into horses and had experience with hogs (Iowa Pork Producer Intern) and beef cattle. Six months later, Matt proposed the day she graduated college from ISU and she said yes. Three years later; Matt, Jana and their two kids, two dogs and three horses moved 100 miles North and East to start dairy farming. They started out milking 60 cows twice per day in a tie stall barn. Matt and Jana each had their own side of the barn. This was done while the children played in the lime pile and helped feed calves until their were old enough to take on more responsibility. In the mid-1990s, Matt and Jana decided to expand their herd and build a milking parlor. They remodeled and added a doubleeight herringbone parlor to their barn, added free stall barn and purchased neighboring properties to house more animals. They milked as many as 340 Holsteins at one time and had to remodel again to make the parlor a double- ten parlor. Anyone who has ever worked for Matt will tell you he is a fanatic about the cleanliness and health of his cattle as well as breeding cows with good feet and legs. Longevity has always been a priority. Matt was given the AMPI award for the longest continuous milk
quality award on his herd of 35 years for hovering between 80,000-125,000 Somatic Cell Count most of the time. At its peak, he had one of the highest components herds in the state and sold 50 plus bulls annually. Like many dairy farmers, he would slide into church or family activities at the last minute as he always made sure cows and calves were fed and properly bedded first. The Iowa State Fair and World Dairy Expo were Matt’s annual vacations. He enjoyed showing cattle with his daughters at all levels of showing. You’ll often find him volunteering to help other Holstein people at shows as he loves cows. Additionally, Matt’s enjoyed many interns over the years and is proud that two became DVMs, one a Ph.D. and several have great jobs in the ag industry. Regancrest S Cashmere-ET and Butz-Hill Dundee Rival-ET are two of his favorite cows he owned with good friends over years. A favorite homebred animal was Hamlett-Hill Jolt Erica that he and his daughter showed from calf to aged cow. He’s flushed many of his cows over the years to expand his herd with good bloodlines. When Matt wasn’t with his cows, he was involved in several leadership positions and activities. He was involved in the Fayette County Dairy Promotion Committee in several officer capacities, served on his church board multiple times, and was named Iowa Young Outstanding Holstein Breeder in 1994 along with his wife. In 2006 and 2010 he hosted the Midwest Hay Expo (put on by Farm Progress Show). He also served on the Prairie State Select Sires board for ten years. Most recently, Matt was the President of the Iowa Holstein Association and co-chair of sponsorship of the 2014 National Holstein Convention when it was in Iowa. He also has hosted dairy judging workouts for numerous groups. Matt turned 60 in 2019 and decided it was finally time to retire from dairy farming (after several years of thinking about it). He sold all 300 of his cows but 20 (housed in a friend’s herd) and just has young stock left on his farm. Matt loved every minute of being a dairy farmer for 35 years, however, looks forward to spending more time with his family, watching college and NFL football, helping his wife with her horse program at EWALU Bible Camp, volunteering and MAYBE traveling outside the Midwest. We know he will continue his life-long support of ordering milk at every restaurant and habitually watches to see how checkoff dollars are being spent for milk marketing! Matt and Jana have two daughters. Jaclyne (former Junior Association President) works at KWWL-TV and lives with her husband in Hudson. Jeanna is an occupational therapist and lives with her husband and one-year-old - Ryder - in Independence.

President’s Perspective
Hello everybody, remember a year ago we couldn’t wait for the year to end. We were in the middle of a wet drawn out fall harvest. Now we just want 2020 to end and hoping Covid does to Bottom line is this. Don’t wish for time to pass any quicker than it does. Our time here is limited enjoy it when you have it. It has been an interesting summer. With the cancelation of several county and state fairs the show season was limited but also brought opportunity for others. So, I and along with many other Midwest breeders would like to thank our National Board of Directors who voted to allow Iowa to host the Midwest Fall National. It was a great show and a beautiful day. Our show chair and committee did a lot of work in a short time to pull this off to be a success. There was a lot of work that was done by people behind the scene that I won’t begin to mention names because I will miss somebody. But a Big thanks goes out to all of you who helped in some way also to all the exhibitors who showed their cattle. I can’t predict what the rest of the year is going to be, but I hope we can all have a SAFE and profitable harvest. “No matter how many hours we work today there will still be more work to do tomorrow, and if we don’t see tomorrow we did more than had to today.” Be safe and have an enjoyable fall, Carl Mensen

2020 Iowa Holstein Princess
Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great summer despite many events being canceled! My summer flew by going to different shows and working on my farm. I had a great time handing out ribbons at the State Junior Holstein Show, District 1 and 8 Shows, the Delco Classic, and at the Youth Dairy Classic. I loved being able to go to shows and see all the amazing animals this summer despite the uncertainty of COVID-19. In addition, I participated in the Iowa Dairy Princess contest this fall, representing the Iowa Holstein Association. I met many intelligent and passionate girls, expanded my speaking abilities, and was crowned the 2020-2021 Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate. I’m very excited to represent all Iowa dairy farmers alongside Meghan this next year! A few weeks after the contest, I started my freshman year at Iowa State University where I’m majoring in Dairy Science. I’m very excited for different club events to get started and hope that there are many in-person events! I wish everyone the best during this harvest season. This has been a crazy year, but I hope that everyone has made the best of it and continues to do so! If you would like to contact me for anything, my number is 563-929-6035, and my email is amberengelken@ gmail.com. Yours respectfully, Amber Engelken
Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Brylie Volker Hometown: Sumner, Iowa High School: Sumner Fredericksburg High School Class Size: 78 Major: Agricultural Business Why did you decide to attend ISU? I made my decision to go to Iowa State at a very young age. Wanting to go into some agricultural field, I knew that ISU would be the school for me. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school, that I decided to go into ag business. What has been your most memorable college experience? My college experience hasn’t been normal or by the book due to the pandemic, but I would have to say my most memorable moment was the late nights in the dorms hanging with friends and making multiple memories. I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one moment because all of them have been pretty unforgettable. I’m grateful for all the friends that I have made and the experience I have had! What has been your favorite course? By far, my favorite course would have to be Animal Science 114 (Survey of the Animal Industry). I enjoyed learning about every animal industry more in-depth. I was able to get a better understanding of what goes into each aspect of livestock production. What are your future goals? I want to stay in the dairy industry and find a job that combines my passion for cattle and the people who hold the same view. Whether that be working in sales, marketing, or public relations, I would love to stay in the industry.
