President’s Perspective
Hello everyone! The National Convention was held in Lancaster, PA which we attended. We had a good group of juniors attending also. It was very enjoyable with all the scenery and farms. I thought land prices in Iowa were high until they said in Lancaster County it was going for $25,000+ per acre. The State Show was held in West Union. What a wonderful place to have the State Show! Congratulations to all the winners!! A big thanks to Paul Stempfle and crew for organizing it, and to our staff Shellie and Jenna for all they did, and to all the volunteers, from ring help to those helping at the clerk table. The State Picnic was held at Dan and Lynn Bolin’s in Clarksville. We had a nice turnout despite all the rain and a detour or two. Thank you for hosting this event. I hope everyone has a safe and successful fall! Thank you, Dan Moon

Why did you decide to attend ISU? Iowa State has always felt like home! I knew I was picking a university with many clubs, the best professors in my field, and a beautiful campus. There are so many opportunities in agriculture at ISU! What has been your most memorable college experience? I have really enjoyed my time in the Dairy Science Club at ISU so far! I am not a dairy science major, but I’ve always thought that “dairy people” just get each other, and it is so true! Every single person I have met in the club is so kind, hard working, and feels like family! I have met some of my closest friends in DSC! What has been your favorite course? I am loving my Agronomy 279 class, which is “Field Exploration of Agronomy”. We travel to different corn and soybean fields everyday, so the field is literally our classroom. We learn many aspects of agronomy, like pest management, water drainage, plant breeding, soil science, crop diseases, and plant growth. We also grow our own crops, this semester I am growing canola for the first time in an ISU greenhouse! I really enjoy the hands-on learning! What are your future career goals? After graduation, I hope to be an agronomist for a seed company working with both seed sales reps and farmers to make the best crop management decisions.

2021 Iowa Holstein Princess
Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful summer! My summer was filled with so many activities and fun. I enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Going to different shows and handing out ribbons at the Iowa State Holstein Show, District 1 and 8 Shows, the Delco Classic, and the great Iowa State Fair. It was so great to have shows this year, and I would like to congratulate all exhibitors on their tremendous honors. I was unable to attend the Iowa Holstein picnic due to prior commitments, however, I saw many photos and it looked like everyone who attended had a wonderful time! Thank you to New Day Dairy for hosting, along with all the sponsors. It is always great to see how different dairy farms run and operate their facilities. I plan to continue my education this fall studying nursing. I am eager to begin this next chapter of my sophomore year. I look forward to staying connected with all dairy enthusiasts and plan to continue as an advocate for the dairy industry. As we begin to move into fall, I want to wish you all the best of luck with harvest and all the fall activities. Stay safe and healthy throughout this busy season. Please never hesitate to reach out if there are any public speaking events, shows, service projects, or anything else I can help with. I can be reached at (563)387-7636 or brooke6courtney6@gmail.com. Best Regards, Brooke Courtney

Next year the transportation will be back to the parents as the convention will be held in South Dakota. The Junior Quiz bowl team finished 2nd and the Senior team finished 5th. He also thanked Paul Stempfle for organizing a great show as well as ST Genetics for sponsoring the t-shirts and all those who sponsor trophies, but made note that they are always looking for more sponsors. Program and Development- Trent Henkes thanked the Bolin’s for hosting the picnic this year and was looking for volunteers or suggestions for next year’s picnic. They also were in talks of a bus trip again in the future. State convention will be held in District 1 and we’re still trying to get a location decided on. Obituary
Ben Kerndt, 26, of rural Lansing, IA, died Thursday, July 15, 2021, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 27th, at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, IA. Benjamin John Kerndt, also known as “Benny,” was born on November 18, 1994, in Decorah, IA. He was baptized at First Presbyterian and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, both in Waukon, IA. Ben attended Waukon schools through his junior year then transferred and graduated from Lansing Kee High in 2013. He received a degree in HVAC Installation from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids in 2014. Ben was actively involved in 4-H, FFA, and most recently Ducks Unlimited. As many know, Ben found his love for the farm and the outdoors at a young age. He enjoyed helping with calf chores, playing with the cats and dogs, and chasing sparrows around the farm. As he got older, he began milking cows. His love for Holsteins led him to showing cattle at county, district, and state shows with many of his dairy friends. Aside from the farm, Ben could be found hunting deer and coon in the woods, and reeling fish out of the river. Once he got a taste of the night life, he went on to find his most famous passion of bow fishing. Ben traveled the Midwest with “His Buddies” chasing water fowl, catching river monsters, and Stackin’ Gillz on his air boat. With his kindness and caring heart, he introduced many new people to bow fishing, and with his fancy white hat, became known as “Captain Ben Kerndt.” When not enjoying the outdoors, Ben could be found spending time with his family and friends, working at Kurth Plumbing and Heating in Waukon or bartending and making late night rounds at The Red Barn Resort & Campground in Lansing. In the winter, he looked forward to playing badminton in Waterville. He loved nothing more than helping others, telling stories, and cracking jokes. These traits along with his infectious smile and heart of gold made him so memorable and loved by those he was around. In his last selfless act on earth, Ben chose to be an organ donor; giving the gift of life to others. Ben was preceded in death by his grandpa Donald Kerndt and is survived by his parents Brad and Mary (Sivesind) Kerndt; sister Katie (Brendon) Kacher; grandparents Patsy Kerndt and Frank and
Carol Sivesind; aunts and uncles: Dan and Jane Sivesind, Terry and Lori (Sivesind) Anderson, Peggy (Perry Fahey) Sivesind, and Dave and Julie (Kerndt) Hawes; and many loving cousins and extended family.

He enjoyed fishing with his sons and spending time with their families. He was an avid Iowa State football and basketball fan. His most treasured times were on the farm. 2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic Several Holstein enthusiasts enjoyed the day at New Day Dairy for the 2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic. Thank you to the Dan & Lynn Bolin and family for hosting this year’s picnic! New Day Dairy is owned and operated by Dan & Lynn Bolin along with their family. Rita the robot (the first AMS Galaxy in Iowa) has milked their 120 cows since 2015 in a new naturally vented freestall barn with a GuestBarn overlooking it. Guests from across the country come to #sleepwiththecows and experience the grandeur of the Holstein cow. Their exclusively Holstein herd milks 3.0x/day with 4.25%F and 3.05%P. They raise all their own replacements and grow most of their crops on 200+ acres. Although Dan has purchased quality Registered Holstein heifers & cows from others, he is most proud of the homegrown breeding he has done creating great healthy productive dairy cows. Today Dan breeds for health & wellness, calving ease, high components, and robot characteristics. Dan is quick to use the best polled and sometimes red and white bulls (especially for the kids).
