“LOVE IS THE NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL”

Our Spring/Summer issue of Oregon Wedding Day explores all the decadent things we adore about weddings: fashion, food, décor and most importantly, LOVE. When recalling the many memorable moments of a wedding day, fare, flair and fun are always top of mind: a gorgeous gown, creative ways to serve hors d’oeuvres, a floral centerpiece that wows, dancing under the stars and maybe a sporty footwear choice à la Air Force Ones.

Décor is anything but blasé these days. Hanging installations, loud linen prints, unexpected elements, textures, colors and so much more—they’re all fair game to perfectly reflect the couple tying the knot. This season’s hottest trend, draping, was on full display in our editorial “Swept Away” on page 42, where Your Perfect Bridesmaid and a curated team served up ALL the romance and whimsy at Oregon Golf Club. Then, color reigned on the Departure rooftop, with Lemonseed Events delivering an outstanding intimate party on page 52. And lastly, we explored the mystical spirit of the Gorge in “Gone With the Wind” on page 60.

Check out the latest fashion trends for every bridal occasion (page 22), cute ways to transform your reception look (page 32) and the DL on skin gadgets to get that sought-after glow (page 30). Also, take our quiz to see which catering option is right for you (page 34).

All this, a monochromatic dream (page 19), a jewelry hack you need for that ring (page 25) and real weddings sure to inspire your very own day (page 87).

So dive in and savor all we have in store for you in the coming pages.

A bright, cheery color palette was on full display for Oregon Wedding Day’s Best of 2024 awards at The Portland Art Museum. Planned and designed by MH Events, the inspiration behind the event was the artist Henri Matisse. Vibrant hues and playful prints were effortlessly complemented by lush florals and lively patterns. Guests were welcomed with cocktails and delicious food. The joyous theme was enhanced with artistic details like a custom bar setup, unique linens, live music and, of course, everyone’s playful attire.

CEO and owner Sonja Babich took to the stage to say a few things about the wedding world. Chelsea Gibson presented the editor’s choice awards, then Alexis Sanabria spoke about about the wonderful Oregon wedding industry. The finalists and winners were voted on by readers, followers and the wedding industry in our open online voting earlier this year. The awards brought forth laughter and happy tears. A celebration was in order post-awards; guests gathered to dance the night away and enjoy desserts.

Oregon Wedding Day’s Best of 2024 awards recognized all the talents and hard work the Oregon wedding industry does throughout the year. Thank you to all who attended and contributed their talents! Congrats to all the finalists and winners!

Inspiration for the Nearly Wed

Monochromatic magic paints a romantic scene at The Arc Light in Oregon City. See more on the next page. Photographed by Laura Shepherd Images.

WRITTEN IN STONE

Teal Dempsey, founder and owner of Wild Emerald, took her inspiration for this stunning styled shoot from the phrase “written in stone,” referring specifically to a kind of love that is “so concrete nothing will break it.” And because tales of this type of love are often told in novels, Dempsey made books a central element in her design scheme, from loose-leaf pages lining the aisle to a book vase to hold the bridal bouquet. As for the color palette, neutral shades of creams, whites and tans were front and center, lending a monochromatic feel. “I designed this shoot to be mostly monochromatic, as I really wanted the variety of textures to create the feeling of romance in the design versus the colors,” she notes. Other elements like stone and concrete were juxtaposed with soft draping and romantic florals, to arrive at an organic, earthy result. “I wanted to use elements that felt contradictory to each other, such as hard stone and concrete next to soft organic fabrics and romantic florals,” she explains. For Dempsey, creating scenes like these is entirely a reflection of the wedding professionals. “There is nothing more magical than a vendor team coming together to create beauty. A vendor team that works well together creates the most beautiful weddings, in my opinion.”

SHOWERED IN LOVE

You know what they say, “April showers...”

Abby Foster and Ian Ellenwood’s love story began on Bumble four years ago, and it’s been an adventure ever since. The couple, who now live in Salt Lake City, knew they wanted something simple yet personal for their wedding. So, they decided to elope in Waldport on the Oregon coast with their parents by their side. Ian’s dad officiated the intimate ceremony, and Abby created her own bouquet, keeping things beautifully minimal. As they drove toward the coast, they stopped in Eugene to pick up a local cake, adding another personal touch to their day. They found a stunning spot right off the highway to exchange vows before heading to Strawberry Hill for their portraits.

And that’s when the rain came—a torrential downpour. But the couple remained unphased. With the weather far from ideal, the couple embraced the downpour, laughing and running through the rain, wrapped in each other’s arms—her in Doc Martens, and him in a bolo tie. While most brides might cringe at the thought of getting soaked, for Abby and Ian, it was the perfect symbol of their love: spontaneous, joyful and completely their own. The day was as unorthodox as their style, and it couldn’t have been more fitting. —Chelsea Gibson

SHINE ON

A dull and dingy ring is a common complaint among the newly engaged and the long-married alike, but for SHINERY (@shinery) founder Brea Fullerton, it sparked the creation of a first-of-its-kind product.

Fullerton pushed herself to bridge the “significant gap in how we care for our jewelry compared to other valued items in our lives” with the creation of her Jewelry Wash, a hand-soap-meets-jewelry cleaner that makes it easy to care for high-quality gems. This innovative and convenient hand wash not only leaves engagement rings and mixed metals sparkling, but it’s also free of sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances and other components harmful to your skin. Fullerton’s “personal challenge” of finding an uncomplicated product and process for her most treasured items has made jewelry care simple. —Ryley Hoff

SNEAK AWAY

A PERFECTLY BESPOKE CELEBRATION OF COLOR, TEXTURE AND UNABASHED LOVE

The Bowline Hotel in Astoria served as the scene of a vibrant and colorful styled elopement set on the shores of the Columbia. Inspired by the couple’s love for bold design, Taryn Schubert of Taryn Nancy Photography and Hope Reese of Wrong Number Floral Co. imagined a visual feast that celebrated individuality. “We want to inspire others who love bold design to lean into the playfulness that color brings to an event,” says Schubert, explaining the shoot’s animated essence. Sami and Kylie, the real couple at the heart of the shoot, read heartfelt vows from a handmade velvet book as they stood framed by a backdrop of blush, coral, orange and yellow florals. The décor dazzled with dynamic arrangements throughout, each

showcasing unexpected blooms or shades. Lush centerpieces burst forth and complemented woven chargers and retro-style linen napkins, adding elements of texture. Loved ones indulged in delectable rainbow desserts and refreshing mocktails, celebrating the couple’s love in style. Colorful umbrellas strategically placed along the beach created a striking visual element. The takeaway? Modern weddings, from large soirées to intimate gatherings, are increasingly incorporating personalized décor in even the smallest of details. “Look around your home. Look in your closet. What do you like to surround yourself with? Textures, colors, patterns ... bring that into your wedding,” Schubert advises.

YOUR CATERING STYLE RESULTS...

What number did you select the most?

MOSTLY ONES: PLATED DINNER

The classic, tried-and-true food service method for a formal event: the sit-down dinner. This style can be customized to be as laid-back or as sophisticated as you’d like—adding courses and more dish options can elevate the experience.

“A plated dinner treats you and your guests to an elevated level of service, while allowing conversation to flow uninterrupted among your friends and loved ones,” notes Josh Cunningham, a Lead Planner at Vibrant Table. “Pre-setting the first course is a wonderful way to let your guests begin enjoying the reception while they await your grand entrance. Sit back, relax and let your catering company cater to you!”

MOSTLY TWOS: BUFFET

A traditionally low-stress option that can really make a splash, a buffet involves a display of selfserve food options, often all from the same or a similar menu. Guests can load up on plenty of options or grab a ton of their favorite dish.

“We love a buffet!” says Lauren Carr, Owner of Artemis Foods. “Guests can choose from a variety of dishes, which helps meet different preferences and dietary needs. Setting up several double-sided buffets allows guests to move through quickly, transitioning the reception smoothly into the ‘party’ portion of the event. It’s also less work for the bride and groom, as it eliminates the need for place cards at the tables.” Even though it’s lower maintenance, adding small touches like elegant chafing dishes, personalized signage or mini “tasting flights” appetizers can bring a bit of flair, creating a memorable—and delicious—experience for everyone.

MOSTLY THREES: FAMILY STYLE

In the same vein as a plated meal, with family style, each table is served their dishes. However, with this service option, everything is oversized and shareable. Friends and family pass around each serving dish, like they would at Thanksgiving dinner, and serve themselves.

“Personally, I love the concept of family-style dining because it encourages interaction,” explains Natalia Barwegan, Director of Happiness at Pearl Catering. “People tend to chat more as they pass dishes around, discussing what they liked, what they’d like to try and sharing their thoughts on the last dish they tried. It creates a more social and personable atmosphere for the guests. Plus, there’s no denying that a table full of food is so beautiful!”

MOSTLY FOURS: STATIONS

Also called “activations,” this type of service is similar to a buffet. The main difference lies in the presentation: Instead of a smorgasbord of choices, stations will often follow a particular food theme (such as sushi or pasta), with attendants ready to serve the food in an artful way.

This style can add a customized wow-factor to your reception, elevating your guests’ experience instantly—from ice bars presenting chilled seafood dishes to a live meat carver making a show out of serving a delicious roast. Talk with your caterer or specialty food provider about their options and pick what speaks to you as a couple. The best part? You don’t have to stick with one style. If you’re a pasta fanatic but your other half is pushing for Dim Sum, serve them both!

PHOTOS: (Top) John Valls; (Bottom) Evrim Icoz

MOSTLY FIVES: FOOD TRUCKS

Calling in a fleet of food trucks takes a lot of the pressure off—once you’ve booked your favorite local trucks to pull up and serve (for this type of service, it’s best if you’re hosting an outdoor reception), you’re done! Note: Most trucks provide disposable dishes and utensils, so if you want more durable options, chat with your planner. China, chargers and flatware are an excellent, and relatively simple, way to elevate a food truck dinner reception. Host long tables with crisp linens and your arrangement of choice—whether flowers, candles, trinkets or a mix—to create a polished look.

A food truck reception can also operate much like one with stations (see above) by way of personalization. It’s also a great way to involve favorite local businesses: You never needed the fancy Filet Mignon dinner (though we hear some trucks offer that!) to host a dazzling event, maybe you just needed tacos from your go-to shop on the corner and some mouth-watering burger options from that new place across town.

FALL FOR THIS SEASON’S HOTTEST TREND—DRAPING—IN A STUNNING ARRAY OF DESIGNS AT OREGON GOLF CLUB IN WEST LINN

Design & Planning: Your Perfect Bridesmaid | Draping: RPS Events

Florals: Trellis Florals | Photography: Jenny Kang | Venue: Oregon Golf Club

On a picturesque autumn day at Oregon Golf Club, Your Perfect Bridesmaid assembled a top-tier team to showcase all there is to love about the dreamy draping trend. The creatives had a few key ideas in mind when bringing the vision to life. “We wanted to first highlight all the ways couples could add softness and texture to their wedding with a draping component,” explains Kimberly Morrill, owner of Your Perfect Bridesmaid. “They could opt

to do that with detailing on a dress, by having their vows written on fabric and hung or even something as simple and understated as their napkin fold to evoke the casually elegant vibe inherent in draping.” She continues, “Secondly, we wanted to demonstrate how draping is not limited to any specific style. Draping can enhance any style, whether edgy, modern, romantic or traditional. It really is a versatile tool to create a lasting impression in any room.”

Our goal was to show how draping is an ACCESSIBLE DÉCOR option regardless of budget. Any couple looking for a soft touch of DRAMA can add a draping component to their wedding.

Smaller budgets can use it to DEFINE a lounge or accent a bar, and larger budgets can opt to DRAPE a room— with a million options in between.

– Kimberly Morrill and Katelyn Evans of Your Perfect Bridesmaid

Lovely stationery elements from Letters and Dust and an embossed silk ribbon on the bridal bouquet were small but impactful details. Bridal attire followed the whimsy:

“We also embraced the biggest trend we are seeing with wedding gowns, which is unique waistlines,” Morrill says of the Casablanca “Hepburn” ball gown from Anna’s Bridal “Old is oh-so-new again. We’re seeing a passionate return to vintage waistlines such as dropped, Basque and princess—perfect for the return of the classic ball gowns.”

A textured buttercream cake design by Here For The Cake even embraced the draping detail, while neutral rentals accented the tabletop with Oregon Golf Club’s exquisite Scottish-inspired architecture peering behind.

We specialize in providing UNIQUE rental pieces that serve as the cornerstone of any event design. For this project, we focused on SOFT , neutral and textured elements, using grooved furniture and earthy tones.

– Irina Bubnova of Event Co. Wedding & Party Rentals

Our design concept for this photoshoot was all about creating ELEGANT drape vignettes that felt both effortless and refined.

I loved how the fabric brought a soft, romantic vibe to the space, adding DEPTH and dimension, while still keeping it approachable and inviting.

"When designing the tabletops, we were inspired by two trends we are seeing a lot as we prepare our 2025 couples: muted, neutral colors and the layering of two textures,” Morrill says. “You will see these trends in the plate and napkin choices as well as the incorporation of textures such as leather, pearl and velvet. More is more but kept in check by the softness of the colors."

Blaire Carroll, owner of Trellis Florals describes her overall approach to designing blooms for the day: "Lush cascading florals, like green Amaranthus and white orchids, reflect the movement of the drapery,” she says. “Flowers with a strong sense of structure were handpicked to stand out from the softness of the fabric. One of the most magical things about being a wedding design florist is the ability to accessorize any vignette and that, I believe, reflects here beautifully.”

From the draping tablecloths to the SWOOPING arch piece, the florals move with the CONTOURS of the fabric effortlessly.

DEPARTURE PLAYS HOST TO A MODERN, REIMAGINED ROOFTOP CELEBRATION AT THE NINES IN PORTLAND

Design & Planning: Lemonseed Events

Floral Design: Page Elliott

Photography: Emett Joseph

Text: Chelsea Gibson

Venue: Departure, The Nines

A vibrant cityscape soirée was on the menu when Lemonseed Events dreamed up this playful shoot at The Nines’ beloved Departure rooftop. While most tend to embrace the Departure deck for ceremonies, this team switched things up and focused on the East deck, showcasing a fresh perspective and highlighting the venue’s versatility. This newly renovated space is completely covered and features retractable shades, heaters, and everything in between to host a wedding year-round in often-rainy Portland.

We were excited to showcase a FRESH vantage point at Departure, while also highlighting the venue’s versatility through the use of BOLD colors. –

Lemonseed Events

Juxtaposed with the skyline, color played the primary role in the day’s scheme, namely with outstanding creations by floral master Page Elliott. Also, statement rental pieces from Arden Event Collective and Lily & Cane infused visual appeal. “We love to create atmospheres that feel fresh, inviting and effortlessly elegant, while also incorporating colors and textures to highlight our clients’ personalities,” Lemonseed Events adds.

We wanted a fun and FUNKY , yet upscale approach to frame our couple and still stand out against our unique concrete-and-green Portland city SKYLINE . Using the open frame & asymmetrical lines of a broken arch created explosions of color around our couple while eschewing the traditional FEEL of an arbor.

Sometimes less is more, and sometimes more is more, as was the case with Something Vintage’s “Briar” ivory table linens featuring a bold black lily detail. Funky green napkins with wave details, custom stationery pieces from Script on This, and color-popping centerpieces brought the eclectic tabletop together.

We are always looking at trends and willing to add COLOR and PATTERNS to our events, and this photo shoot was no different. From what we can see, 2025 is bringing color back, and we are HERE for it!

No wedding at Departure would be complete without diving into the food, described by the restaurant as a “modern culinary exploration of Asia brought to life through masterful remixes of land and sea.”

From freshly rolled sushi to flavor-filled sides and a perfectly paired bar selection, guests will delight in this decadent dining experience.

Possibly the best part about hosting your day at Departure? Slipping away after your last dance to one of The Nines’ sublimely appointed rooms for a slice of heaven from Banquette.

GONE with the WIND

A TALE OF A BRIDE WITH A REBELLIOUS SPIRIT AT WIND MOUNTAIN RANCH IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE

Design & Planning: Amanda Jean PDX Events

Photography: Briana

Morrison Photography

Text: Chelsea Gibson

Venue: Wind Mountain Ranch

“Get married where the wild winds roam,” Wind Mountain Ranch promises, with its 22 acres of spectacular wilderness, sweeping vistas and western charm in the Columbia River Gorge. While dreaming up the inspiration for this shoot, lead planner and designer Amanda Bloom of Amanda Jean PDX Events and photographer Briana Morrison recall finding their muse in the venue and growing from there. An empowered, elegant design scheme followed suit—a “sophisticated yet subtle palette that mixed with textures to provide an upscale feel in the raw setting of meadows, evergreens and the Columbia River Gorge,” Bloom describes.

We wanted to connect more DEEPLY with a venue that inspired us, hoping to build a lasting relationship. Choosing Wind Mountain Ranch was easy—it offers unparalleled views of the Columbia River Gorge, a place rich in HISTORY and natural beauty.

We also found INSPIRATION in Beyoncé’s 'Cowboy Carter' album, and you’ll notice a deliberate absence of a male model in this shoot. This decision was meant to underscore the power of FEMININITY in all its forms, showcasing its strength, RESILIENCE and rebellious spirit. I wanted this shoot to evoke that FIERCE energy within all of us.

Amanda Bloom of Amanda Jean PDX Events

Letters and Dust’s elegant stationery suite recalls the past with vintage stamps, torn-edged invites and a custom envelope liner—styled with one-of-a-kind accessories from Flat Lay Library

The bride looks effortlessly chic basking in the Pacific Northwest sun, wearing the “Evie” gown from Dalliance Gown Rentals

When conceptualizing the design, I aimed to capture the Gorge's RAW and UNTAMED nature. There’s a wild, almost mystical energy in that landscape that feels TRULY nourishing for the soul.

– Amanda Bloom of Amanda Jean PDX Events

The intimate gathering blended in with the natural surroundings, featuring wooden chairs and tables topped with organic arrangements that looked as if they were gathered from a nearby field.

Date: JUNE 29, 2024

Sophia Davies and Brendan Ritschard met in college and have been inseparable ever since, sharing many memorable experiences, from finishing their master’s degrees to embarking on their next adventure: marriage. They held their wedding at Sage and Social, a beautiful modern farmhouse and event space. Fashion followed the modern vibe, with guests donning all black, while bride Sophia wore a classic form-fitting gown, and groom Brendan sported a white tux. Beautiful all-white arrangements of snapdragons, roses and dahlias added to the celebration’s sophisticated ambiance. Catering featured the couple’s favorite pizza for dinner and a generous gluten-free dessert selection with cake, cookies and doughnuts—there was also a surprise ice cream truck. A touching moment came when Sophia gave a heartfelt speech and dedication to her mom, presenting her with her bridal bouquet, which left guests in tears. Navigating an unexpected forecast, the newlyweds and their guests danced the night away on the checkered dance floor under the rain, making the day all the more memorable. —Jenny Castro

MIRANDA & TODD

Married & Celebrated: CROOK POINT, PISTOL RIVER

Date: JUNE 1, 2024

Bright, warm florals and sweet desserts mingled with beer pong and dance party accessories to represent newly wedded couple Miranda and Todd. They met in high school, but did not start dating until after they had graduated. Together, they own three dogs—Legend, Luna and Mushu—who were all included in the couple’s wedding procession, serving as ring bearers and flower girl. Pictures of the dogs adorned the venue as well, including on custom napkins and table numbers. The design of the couple’s celebration was “delicate boho sunset,” with the intention of creating the feeling of the sunset as well representing Miranda’s bubbly and positive personality. To capture this theme, florals in various blushes of pink were chosen. The sweet ceremony and exchange of vows left everyone in tears. To keep the festivities going, guests indulged in a Champagne tower, dessert bar and beer pong to continue mingling all throughout the evening. —Calishia Vang

MICHELLE & LEWIS

Married & Celebrated: THE EVERGREEN, PORTLAND Date: AUGUST 12, 2024

Michelle Morin and Lewis Williams celebrated their wedding with a full weekend of festivities. After a welcome party on Friday at Stevens Pavilion in Portland’s Hoyt Arboretum, the couple held their wedding celebration on Saturday at The Evergreen. That was followed by a farewell brunch with family in the backyard of their home on Sunday morning. Meeting about 12 years ago, the couple celebrated their love in style with unusual DIY touches that featured vibrant and playful floral décor. Local summer berries served as inspiration, with a floral palette of mixed auburn tones, soft mauves, pops of pink and white, along with greenery. The arrangements featured beautiful dahlias, garden roses, sunflowers and Queen Anne’s lace. As part of their nontraditional wedding, Michelle and Lewis spent the morning of their wedding together before walking down the aisle. They also made the choice of mini pies for dessert. AM & CAITLIN

Married & Celebrated: HANAI CENTER, BEND

Date: JUNE 1, 2024

AM and Caitlin’s wedding was a beautiful celebration, unfolding over a full week in the high-desert forests surrounding Bend. The lovebirds created a deeply personal experience that departed from tradition. Early in the week, the couple eloped privately to the base of a waterfall, exchanging vows in the serene quiet of nature. This intimate moment set the tone for their microwedding held a few days later, attended by 48 of their closest friends and family at the Hanai Center. Their wedding day was filled with thoughtful touches that echoed their relationship’s spontaneity and joy. AM and Caitlin chose a 360-degree ceremony layout, standing at the heart of the gathering to bring their loved ones fully into their love story. Walking down the aisle together, they surprised guests with an unusual gesture: Under each of their chairs, guests discovered the couple’s “rings,” not in the form of traditional bands but as a necklace and watch. Caitlin’s outfit was as intentional as the ceremony. She repurposed the bodice from her first wedding dress and paired it with sleek, custom-made silk pants and an overskirt, blending past and present in a way that felt uniquely hers. The floral arrangements, in simple white and green, brought an effortlessly romantic feel to the event, perfectly framing their intimate celebration. In describing their love, the newlyweds spoke about the many instances of strangers acknowledging and complimenting their relationship. “It’s reminded us how important the representation of queer love is, not only to those experiencing it, but also those witnessing it.” —Lizzie Parish

ELIZABETH & SOREN

Married & Celebrated: BLACK BUTTE RANCH, SISTERS

Date: AUGUST 17, 2024

Elizabeth Wong and Soren Steelquist’s love story began at the University of San Francisco, where they met while playing on an intramural basketball team. The two quickly bonded over their shared love of the outdoors, and their story blossomed from there. It’s no wonder that, as outdoor enthusiasts, they chose scenic Black Butte Ranch to host their wedding celebration. The ceremony was held at the edge of the lake at Black Butte’s lodge, which served as a charming backdrop in a stunning natural setting. Their wedding design featured bold and vibrant colors, while personalized touches—such as customized napkins and an appearance by their pup, Thor, as the ring bearer—imbued the celebration with authenticity. Another sweet moment was when the couple surprised their guests with ice cream sandwiches and local gelato after dinner. The couple embraced local garden flowers in the day’s floral arrangements, such as cosmos, scabious, zinnias, rudbeckia and dahlias, in shades of blush, white, mustard and rusty orange. For her dress, Elizabeth chose a sophisticated floor-length gown, which was complemented by her bridesmaids’ colorful picks.
