EN VOGUE

This issue of Washington Wedding Day is a stunning work of beauty. I don’t say this lightly, considering I have been the editor-in-chief of more than 30 magazines over the past 12 years. We traveled near and far to capture the latest styles for brides and grooms. At Enchantment Resort in Sedona (page 72), we focused on fashionable outfits for all those special wedding events, from the bridal shower to the after-party. We headed up to Lairmont Manor in Bellingham to showcase chic, fashion-forward gowns (page 60) from leading designers, including Seattle’s own Luly Yang and newcomer Angeline Brunk.

The trend-forward style doesn’t end there: Despite it being a rainy day, Perfect Storm Moments’ picnic-inspired design (page 80) is the epitome of casual luxury. And the real weddings (page 113) in this issue are a divine collection of lovely palettes and dreamy settings. Plus, we have gathered ideas for engagement photos (page 48), guest experiences (page 44), party playlists (page 34), beauty tips (page 38) and more.

Within these pages, there is something for every couple’s walk down the aisle, and I hope you find inspiration that makes your heart beat a little quicker.

moments at our Best Of 2024 gala at the National Nordic Museum

A bright, cheery color palette was on full display for Washington Wedding Day’s Best of 2024 awards at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle. Planned and designed by Your Perfect Bridesmaid, the inspiration behind the event was the artist Henri Matisse. Vibrant hues and bold prints were effortlessly complemented by lush florals and lively patterns. Guests were welcomed with cocktails and delicious food. The joyous theme was enhanced with artistic details like custom bar setup, unique linens, live music and, of course, everyone’s playful attire.

CEO and owner Sonja Babich took to the stage to say a few things about the wedding world. Editorial Director Lara Burnap presented the editor’s choice awards, followed by Publisher Alexis Sanabria, who stepped on stage to talk about the wonderful Washington wedding industry. The finalists and winners were voted on by readers, followers, and the wedding industry in our open online voting earlier this year. The awards brought forth laughter and happy tears. A celebration was in order post-awards; guests gathered to dance the night away and enjoy late-night bites and desserts.

Washington Wedding Day’s Best of 2024 awards recognized all the talents and hard work the Washington wedding industry does throughout the year. Thank you to all who attended and contributed their talents. Congrats to all the finalists and winners!

SPRING AWAKENING

For Seattle-based florist Chloe Cha and photographer Amy Law, this striking styled shoot was the first in a series of designs they plan to produce that captures the essence of each season of the year. “Embarking on this yearlong project has been an exhilarating journey for both Chloe and me,” Law says. “Starting off strongly with ‘The New Beginning, Spring,’ we set a high standard for the seasons to follow.”

Every detail was intentional in bringing the “Spring” vision to fruition, from the photographic style to the florals. For the photography, Law played with light and shadow. “The contrast between the two was used to symbolize the emergence of new life and the fading of the old,” she notes. For the floral design, Cha used a harmonious blend of winter and spring blooms to symbolize the transition between the two seasons. “This mix of flowers represents the awakening from the quiet dormancy of winter to the vibrant rebirth of spring,” Cha explains. The curated selection, which includes hellebore, sweet peas, cherry blossoms, flowering prunus branches, anemones, butterfly ranunculus and Keira roses, was gathered into restrained arrangements to create a minimal, modern look. “This shoot not only captures the essence of new beginnings but also sets the tone for the creative exploration and beautiful stories we aim to tell throughout the year,” Law says.

ON TREND

A myriad of modern trends star in a demure design scheme created by Pennies Events, showing that you don’t have to choose a lane when it comes to wedding décor; you can and should mix trends to achieve a look you love for your memorable day.

Über-trendy draping installations by Pearl Studio make a dreamy backdrop for bold floral arrangements, with the draping motif continuing in the bride’s dress and billowy pleated sleeves. Beloved pearls are omnipresent, gracing a beautiful white cake confection as well as the candlesticks. Bows bring a touch of whimsy to the glassware, cake and candelabra. The takeaway? “Don’t be afraid to mix trends and have fun with the creative side of wedding fashion and statements,” says photographer Emily Horwitz of EH Photography. —Chelsea Gibson

GONE FISHING

Andy Straw and Adrienne Barber’s wedding was a beautiful blend of love, adventure and personal passions, set against the stunning backdrop of Colchuck Lake near Leavenworth. The couple, who met on Bumble and bonded over their shared love of the outdoors, chose to incorporate Andy’s passion for fly-fishing into their special day along with an intimate vow ceremony.

The couple began the day with a sunrise hike to the alpine lake. After reaching their destination, they donned their wedding attire—Andy’s was particularly fitting as the suit included a custom silk lining with an elegant fish pattern. The serene setting proved the perfect atmosphere for Andy and Adrienne to cozy up with their coffee mugs and read their private vows to each other. But the highlight of the day was yet to come. Andy, an avid fly-fisherman who once took a monthlong trip to New Zealand for the sport, had brought along their fishing gear. As the sun began to crest the ridge, warming the chilly morning air, Andy set up the poles, and the couple enjoyed fishing together. This activity not only recognized Andy’s passion but also symbolized the adventures they would continue to share in their married life.

The evening was spent in the company of close family in a woodsy cabin, where they enjoyed a private dinner prepared by a chef. The meal featured duck, a fitting choice given the couple’s shared interest in training their dogs for duck hunting. The table was adorned with flowers from the garden of Adrienne’s mother, imbuing the décor with a personal touch.

Instead of the traditional dances, the couple opted for a champagne toast with their families. The evening concluded with heartfelt toasts from the groom’s father and the bride’s mother, marking the end of a day that perfectly epitomized their love for each other and the great outdoors.

THE GOODEST BOY

We will never be over this trend. For many couples, their wedding day simply wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from their furry family member(s). The options are endless for how you decide to show them off. The ring bearer or flower dog are classic choices for the walk down the aisle, in addition to décor details that honor your pet—from dog treat favors to custom cake toppers, signature cocktails, napkin illustrations and personalized signage.

Having Fido join you for a first look or pre-wedding festivities can be a fun option if your companion tends to be a little skittish or succumbs to stage fright. For Mackenzie Tocco and John Tarzian’s wedding at Ray’s Boathouse, having their pup, Jackson, join them for pre-ceremony photos was a special moment they’ll never forget. Dressed to the nines, Jackson stole the show posing on the waterfront in his green bow tie. And in the cutest candid moment ever, as bridal attendants fluffed the train of Mackenzie’s gown for photos, Jackson assumed it was a blanket and laid down on it, just as he would do when the couple would lay a blanket down for him on outings. Talk about a photo op! —Chelsea Gibson

SHINE ON

A dull and dingy ring is a common complaint among the newly engaged and the long-married alike, but for SHINERY (@shinery) founder Brea Fullerton, it sparked the creation of a first-of-its-kind product. Fullerton pushed herself to bridge the “significant gap in how we care for our jewelry compared to other valued items in our lives” with the creation of her Jewelry Wash, a hand soap-meets-jewelry cleaner that makes it easy to care for high-quality gems. This innovative and convenient hand wash not only leaves engagement rings and mixed metals sparkling but also free of sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances and other components harmful to your skin. Fullerton’s “personal challenge” of finding an uncomplicated product and process for her most treasured items has made jewelry care simple.

LET’S DANCE

UNFORGETTABLE ANTHEMS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR WEDDING PLAYLIST

Behind every unforgettable dance party is a carefully curated playlist filled with tracks that speak to the hearts of all in attendance. We’ve compiled a selection of beloved dance anthems straight from Washington’s music experts, the bangers and ballads that ensure an unforgettable soirée.

PHOTO: Wild Romance Photography

ULTIMATE PARTY STARTER: “SEPTEMBER”

“This song transcends all others as the one song guaranteed to get everyone on the dance floor. It’s simply one of the best songs ever written, and people of all ages and backgrounds love it, know the words and can get groovy to it.”

—David Schwartz, Orion Entertainment

GO-TO SET OPENER: “UPTOWN FUNK”

“A lot of current music doesn’t resonate with the older generations, but ‘Uptown Funk’ everyone knows and loves. It’s got that signature opening bass part, ‘doh ... doh doh doh, doh doh doh, doh doh ...’ and all the Bruno Mars swagger and style. Plus, we add costumes (fedoras, aviator sunglasses and gold bling chains) and choreography (some from the music video and some that I created) to add something spectacular to our performance.”

—Tristin Heiser, The Afterparty Band

CLASSIC FLOOR FILLER:

“I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY”

“Since ’80s tunes are always requested, a go-to hit for the genre that pops every time is Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody.’ Our co-lead vocalist Darelle Holden nails the vibe, and everybody sings along.”

—Michael Benson, Michael Benson Band

ULTIMATE MASH-UP

“More than one single tune, our DJ-styled mash-ups are floor-packers. Like this medley: ‘Stand By Me’/‘Oh, What A Night’/’24K’/‘This Is How We Do It’/ ‘Hot in Herre.’ ‘Stand By Me’ pulls all ages out with its easy funky tempo. ‘Oh, What A Night’ ups the energy and holds ’em. Bruno Mars’ ‘24K’ hits the current vibe, ‘This Is How We Do It’ opens up our R&B collection, then ‘Hot in Herre’ expands into our rap tracks. And voilà! The dance party is wide open and never ends.”

—Micheal Benson, Michael Benson Band

SING-ALONG CLOSER: “DON’T STOP BELIEVING”

“We take this song the extra mile as we go out into the audience, find the singers or the most outgoing and brave folks, and have them sing the song instead. Then we say ‘Everyone!’ on the big part of the song and hold our mics up to pick up the whole room singing along. It’s honestly my favorite part of every show we do. The energy is just what you want for the last song at your wedding.”

—Tristin Heiser, The Afterparty Band

EXIT SONG: “MR. BRIGHTSIDE”

“This song by The Killers has become a popular last-dance ‘sing-along’ for the end of the night as the couple depart, usually surrounded by their well-lubricated besties and guests (who end up being the dance floor VIPs after the older generation of family and friends have departed). The elation of hearing many voices singing along loudly, word for word, as the couple bid farewell, sometimes not always pitch-perfect, always ends the wedding on a really high note.”

—Leslie Wheatley, Seattle Parties

WALTZ OF THE FLOWERS

SWAYING BLOOMS SOFTEN THE URBAN VIBES AT HIDEAWAY CELLARS

Ultrafeminine florals created with artistic subtlety bring romance to the industrial interior of Hideaway Cellars in Seattle. Calling to mind the ethereality of movement, a palette of apricot and golden-hour hues is enveloped in greenery. The delicate buds of garden roses and pink amaranths cascade down the walls and sprout from the tables in a perpetual state of growth. At the altar, florals float overhead in a plush cloud, eliciting the image of a shower of botanicals. Even the intricately delicate bouquet radiates romance. Evocative of a warm and verdant sunset scene, the unique floral composition appears to be swaying softly in an eternal summer breeze.

TRUE BLUE

A MODERN GARDEN CELEBRATION PAYS HOMAGE TO A VINTAGE RHYME

Nestled in the foothills of Mt. Baker, the natural beauty of Wandering Waters provided a rich tapestry for a unique design based on the 19thcentury bridal rhyme “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” The verdant landscape, with its tall cedar and fir trees, provided a picturesque backdrop for the Victorian-influenced celebration with vintage floral details.

To embody “something old,” antique items—delicate dishware, candle sticks and a sky-blue dresser—evoked an old-world feel. For “something new,” charming, handcrafted elements with a contemporary flair were incorporated, including naturally dyed ribbons, handmade vases and pressed-flower candles. A thoughtful example of “something borrowed” is the bride’s heirloom-quality necklace and ring by Lierre Filigree Jewelry. Designer Michelle Lierre creates custom filigree jewelry ranging from new settings for family gems to melting gold and re-using to create a new, timeless piece with sentimental value.

“Something blue” is woven throughout the design, especially in the florals. “True blue is a rare color for flowers, but there is this window of opportunity in late spring when there seems to be many varieties of flowers available in the blue spectrum,” explains Laura Wheeler, owner and florist at Humble Bouquet. “The blue hues were right at home with the lush green landscape and blue hills.” The ceremony features a grounded meadow design to create an organic spring garden vibe. “Florals should always tie the event to a particular place and time,” says Wheeler. The tabletop’s centerpiece springs to life with an ombre arrangement of stemmed florals melding from violet to blue to white. Other notes of blue were incorporated into stationery, cake and even a touch in the bride’s hair.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GUEST

A COUPLE WENT ALL OUT AND SHOWERED THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY WITH FUN SURPRISES DURING THEIR OUTDOOR NUPTIALS

At a wedding, the presence of love is hardly surprising. But when Mary and Garrett were planning their “I do’s,” they wanted to wow their guests with amenities—their way of showing love to all the people who matter most. They planned a wedding that would brim with their love: a work of elegance blended with thoughtful hospitality, showcasing interactive stations that brought their love story to life. The outdoor cocktail hour kicked off with a Seattle-inspired oyster bar and a coffee station that paid homage to their meet-cute at a local coffee stand. As the evening progressed, attendees enjoyed an array of delightful surprises, including an ice cream station with root beer floats, a s’mores fire pit and a cigar bar.

“We have always been go-getters that love to spoil our people, so that was our main drive with the whole event,” the bride says. “We tried our hardest to incorporate all of our favorite things into the day.” Those personalized details made all the difference, from custom stir sticks featuring their beloved German shepherds to hangover kits and personalized name tags at each place setting. For the reception, both Garrett and Mary embraced a playful second look, with the groom’s light-up sneakers bringing a touch of whimsy to the dance floor. In the comfy but cute looks, the newlyweds boogied with their nearest and dearest under a canopy of string lights well after the sun had faded.

PICTURE PERFECT

PHOTOGRAPHER EMILY HORWITZ SHARES HER TOP TIPS FOR NAILING YOUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

“Are you the modern city-chic bride? Earthy and adventurous? Maybe you are romantic, think running on the beach like you’re in a rom-com, or steamy and ethereal walking in the forest. Whomever you are, your save-the-date and wedding-website photos showcase your personality as a couple and set the tone for the wedding.”

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

“This is the most crucial part of getting amazing photos! The best light happens around sunrise and sunset. When photographers refer to golden hour, or you see warm, romantic images on Pinterest, they are likely taken during the hour before sunset. The light is even and flattering during this time of day, whereas midday can be harsh during the summer months, and in the winter, expect clouds and rain.”

SEASONS CHANGE

“Let’s be honest, as awesome as the Pacific Northwest is, the weather can be unpredictable, wet, foggy and grey. The time of year will make a difference in how your photos look. If your wedding is happening in the fall and you want the same feel and color palettes for your engagement session, then shoot in October. If you want to run carefree in a pretty dress around the city, then summer months are the best bet. The mountains are a stunning backdrop: In November, you have snow; whereas in July, it’s all about the wildflowers.”

VIBES MATTER

“Your engagement photos should help tell your love story. Think about what you like to do together. Where do you like to go to spend time together? Where did you meet? What is your wedding vibe? These elements set the groundwork for telling your story in an artistic and authentic way. It is so much more meaningful to design your session with this in mind. I always want my clients’ sessions to feel like a date: exciting, fun and romantic.”

GLAM SQUAD

“If you don’t do makeup and hair that often, having a professional is great. In photographs, more is sometimes good, as subtle doesn’t show up as it does in person. This is a great time to try out looks or makeup artists you may want for the big day. And always get a manicure and ensure your hands look well-kept. In engagement sessions, your ring is a focal point, and close-up shots will show that chipped nail!”

DRESS TO IMPRESS

“What you wear can and will elevate your shoot and can even complement the wedding aesthetic. Some couples choose to incorporate their wedding colors into their outfits. The best route is to go with something tried-and-true: clothes that move with you and hug in all the right places. You can go glam, or if authentic photos are what you want, then show up as your everyday self. Rule of thumb: Choose to complement or contrast with your location. If in doubt, aim for neutral, earthy tones. I love a mix of textures rather than patterns.”

TOUCHDOWN PARTY

A LUXE ANNIVERSARY SOIRÉE AT HUSKY STADIUM SURPRISES AND DELIGHTS GUESTS

Tally and Kirby held their wedding anniversary party at the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium a year to the day from when they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at the Seattle courthouse. For the unforgettable celebration, guests were greeted with valet service and guided down a neon tunnel to the stadium’s exterior viewing deck, where they sipped on Coors Light and pineapple margaritas while a trio played acoustic ’90s hip-hop hits.

Kristin Banta Events produced an aesthetic that was coastal meets Restoration Hardware meets equestrian, transforming the space into a lounge with cream-colored upholstered sofas, slipper chairs, cognac-hued leather stools, wooden tables and area rugs. An oversized bar was a stunning focal point, and custom napkins and bar menus with cognac leather and horse-bit buckles added charm.

Seattle dance band Hit Explosion continued the entertainment and was later followed by a silent disco to keep the dance party going. Guests enjoyed fare at taco and pizza stations, noshed on passed hors d’oeuvres and indulged at a late-night custom ice cream sandwich station. For more fun, an interactive photo op at the far end of the deck invited attendees to capture moments throughout the night.

After hours of dancing, eating and celebrating, guests made their way back through the neon-lit tunnel, now illuminated in rainbow colors, and were met with a candy table and dog treat station—a sweet send-off for guests and their furry friends. Just as the night was ending, another surprise appeared in the form of a hot dog food truck, a final delight in a memorable evening.

YOUR CATERING STYLE RESULTS...

What number did you select the most?

MOSTLY ONES: PLATED DINNER

The classic, tried-and-true food service method for a formal event: the sit-down dinner. This style can be customized to be as laid-back or as sophisticated as you’d like—adding courses and more dish options can elevate the experience.

“Hosting a plated dinner is a great way to create an intimate and memorable experience, where everyone gets a beautifully served dish just for them,” explains Sasha Talsky, director of catering sales at Herban Feast by Landmark Event Co. “When guests are able to remain seated around the table during the meal, it allows them to enjoy the moment, catching up with old friends, meeting new and sharing favorite stories of the wedding couple. We contribute to this experience with creative and progressive plated meals, focusing on Pacific Northwest seasonal and local ingredients.”

MOSTLY TWOS: BUFFET

A traditionally low-stress option that can really make a splash, a buffet involves a display of self-serve food options, often all from the same or a similar menu. Guests can load up on plenty of options or grab a ton of their favorite dish.

“Buffets allow you to serve more than one entrée, starch and veggie dish, giving guests a greater variety to choose from and letting them customize their own combinations,” says Matt Haggerty of the Hall at Fauntleroy, Tuxedos & Tennis Shoes and creative director of DSquared. “They are almost always a cheaper option than chef stations or plated meals, as they require less staff to maintain, without sacrificing delicious food. Buffets also provide space for visual creativity, with platters styled using florals, produce or other themed décor to match your wedding style. Even though it’s lower maintenance, adding small touches like elegant chafing dishes, personalized signage or mini ‘tasting flight’ appetizers can bring a bit of flair, creating a memorable—and scrumptious—experience for everyone.”

MOSTLY THREES: FAMILY STYLE

In the same vein as a plated meal, with family style, each table is served their dishes. However, with this service option, everything is oversized and shareable. Friends and family pass around each serving dish, like they would at Thanksgiving dinner, and serve themselves.

Sean Pals, Northwest director of catering for Act 3 Catering, dishes on this service: “Family-style dinner service creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages conversation and connection among guests. Sharing dishes at the table fosters a sense of togetherness and adds a personal touch to the celebration. It’s a perfect way to make everyone feel at home while enjoying a variety of delicious options, ensuring the meal is as memorable as the special day itself.”

MOSTLY FOURS: STATIONS

Also called “activations,” this type of service is similar to a buffet. The main difference lies in the presentation: Instead of a smorgasbord of choices, stations will often follow a particular food theme (such as sushi or pasta), with attendants ready to serve the food in an artful way.

“Food-station-style service offers a unique dining experience by presenting complete, smallerformat menus at each station, allowing guests to sample diverse cuisines in a single setting. This approach encourages the exploration of flavors from around the world, fostering a vibrant and interactive atmosphere,” explains Shelby Sewell, CEO and culinary director of Foodz Catering.

“Guests can enjoy multiple small plates tailored to their preferences, promoting variety and personalization. Additionally, it minimizes wait times and crowding, as diners can move freely between stations.”

MOSTLY FIVES: FOOD TRUCKS

Calling in a fleet of food trucks takes a lot of the pressure off—once you’ve booked your favorite local trucks to pull up and serve (for this type of service, it’s best if you’re hosting an outdoor reception), you’re done! Note: Most trucks provide disposable dishes and utensils, so if you want more durable options, chat with your planner. China, chargers and flatware are excellent, and relatively simple, additions to elevate a food truck dinner reception. Dress long tables with crisp linens and your arrangement of choice—whether flowers, candles, trinkets or a mix—to create a polished look.

A food truck reception can also operate much like one with stations (see above) by way of personalization. It’s also a great way to involve favorite local businesses: You don’t really need the fancy filet mignon dinner (though we hear some trucks offer that!) to host a dazzling event; maybe you just need tacos from your go-to shop on the corner and some mouthwatering burger options from that new place across town.

With original art deco details, stunning mountain views and handcrafted interiors, Graduate Seattle is an inspired venue for your ceremony, reception and more.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

PICNICS GET A LUXURIOUS NEW LOOK WITH A TRENDING SPRING-INFUSED PALETTE AND TOUCHES OF ELEGANT WHIMSY AT PARTIES ON THE TERRACE

Design & Planning: Perfect Storm Moments Florals: Kinetic Botany Photography: Myla Li Photos Text: Lara Burnap Venue: Parties on the Terrace

The design for an elevated picnic comes to fruition at Parties on the Terrace, effortlessly striking a balance between casual and elegant. The idea was sparked by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest—rain and all—and included a touch of whimsy in the creation of this high-end design. “We love stepping into an outdoor venue or someone’s backyard and imagining all of the different possibilities for building a one-ofa-kind wedding,” says Aaron Shook of Perfect Storm Moments. Soft, natural spring colors of mauve, buttery yellow and deep green make ideal complements to Parties on the Terrace’s lush foliage and grand trees. “Our favorite detail that we wove throughout the design was the addition of mushrooms into the floral design,” notes Shook. “Kinetic Botany used different types and textures to add a unique element to this vision.”

We LOVE when we can create a sense of timeless LUXURY in a space like Parties on the Terrace.

– Aaron Shook, Perfect Storm Moments

The bouquet is a springtime gathering of sweet peas, scabiosa, garden roses, tulips, lisianthus and grevillea foliage, with a large chanterelle mushroom in the middle. “The trend of bouquets for grooms is really about inclusivity and self-expression in weddings,” says Lexi Hamill of Kinetic Botany.

The spot for the ceremony features pedestals handcrafted by Shook, which are topped with bountiful florals—including tulips, sweet peas, garden roses, snapdragons and scented geraniums—arranged in mix-and-match vessels sourced from Goodwill. “While perfectly matching vessels can look great, searching for unique, repurposed vessels can help add character and personal touches to your wedding day,” says Hamill.

Floral items don’t need to be SILOED into gendered categories. If you want a bouquet, a boutonnière or something ENTIRELY different, go for it!

Adding a little touch of something purposeful and UNIQUE to your wedding will help it feel personal and make for a MEMORABLE experience for you and your guests.

The tabletop is filled with subtle suggestions of a picnic, such as wicker placemats and mini baskets filled with macarons, all laid out on a sage botanical printed linen. Locally grown mushrooms in a variety of colors and textures are tucked into the floral arrangements and scattered around the table and cake display—a thoughtful, whimsical detail.

“When thinking about a wedding, time and place are important,” says Hamill.

“In the Pacific Northwest, mushrooms are widely available and change with the seasons. Incorporating them into a wedding design creates that anchor into time and place while also adding an unexpected, interesting element.”

“We love creating weddings in spaces where we can send guests on a journey and build little hidden spaces for guests to find and explore,” says Shook. Parties on the Terrace features a variety of verdant spaces, including the 2,800-square-foot Grand Lawn, two terraced lawns tucked among towering trees, a covered outdoor patio and a cozy firepit surrounded by Adirondack chairs. “Creating a comfortable yet elegant lounge space that fit this outdoor space was an important part of the design,” says Shook. “It lent a special nod to the vision of a luxurious backyard picnic.”

Every couple is DIFFERENT , and finding ways to tell their STORY in the design makes such an impact.

REAL WEDDINGS

Influencer Taryn Delanie Smith tied the knot with Alec Castillo in a picture-perfect wedding at Roche Harbor. Photography by Janet Lin. See more on the next page.

TARYN & ALEC

Married & Celebrated: ROCHE HARBOR RESORT, FRIDAY HARBOR

Date: JULY 24, 2024

Taryn Smith and Alec Castillo’s wedding day at Roche Harbor Resort on San Juan Island beautifully embodied their love for the Pacific Northwest. Set in a lush garden, the ceremony featured a palette of soft white, cream, champagne and green, which seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings. Every detail was crafted to reflect the couple’s unique story. A custom toile pattern—incorporating elements such as the Empire State Building (which is the view from the couple’s NYC apartment), hometown ferries and peonies (Taryn’s favorite flower)—appeared on stationery, signage and décor throughout the event, as did a family crest they had designed. The couple also chose to both change their last name to York, a choice they made to pay homage to Alec’s stepdad who raised him. During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed the “Brucerita,” a signature margarita honoring the couple’s beloved Great Dane, and discovered an elaborate wall display with a handwritten thank you card penned to each guest. The reception featured long tables draped in cream linens adorned with candles, florals and greenery, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Overhead, lanterns entwined with greenery enhanced the romantic atmosphere while they enjoyed live music from a pianist. The celebration concluded with an after-party on a historic tugboat— a childhood dream come true for Taryn, who always wanted a wedding on the water, making it a truly unforgettable experience. —Laura Cross

GINNY & ADAM

Married & Celebrated: SALTWATER FARM, SAN JUAN ISLAND

Date: JULY 27, 2024

Ginny Rolfe and Adam Fisher’s love story, which was sparked on OkCupid, became a flame on a rainy Boston evening when a simple thought crossed Ginny’s mind: “I’m going to marry this man.” Five years later this thought became reality when Adam proposed on the bike path where they first met. Their wedding at Saltwater Farm on San Juan Island was a tribute to sustainability and natural beauty. Overlooking the Salish Sea, a lush grass lawn served as a picturesque setting for their intimate wedding. Guests arrived via the Jolly Trolley and were greeted by sparkling wine and the serene farm setting. Wildflower-inspired florals decorated the ceremony, blending seamlessly with the landscape. Officiated by Adam’s father, the heartfelt ceremony included Ginny’s nieces escorting her down the aisle, followed by a petal toss as the couple left the ceremony site. Cocktail hour featured interactive food stations that included a live oyster-shucking bar and gourmet cheese display. Signature cocktails named after their beloved cats, Luna and Lia, added a personal touch. Ginny’s and Adam’s love for reading was reflected in a book-themed seating chart, featuring custom book jackets with seating assignments. Dinner took place alfresco in front of the barn, with long tables draped in patterned linens, white runners and a variety of single-variety bud vases. Green LED lamps nestled among the floral clusters created a cozy, library-like ambiance. After dinner, guests danced the night away in the barn as a lively 11-piece band played, and interactive dessert and crossword stations kept everyone entertained. —Laura Cross

JENNA & GRANT

Married & Celebrated: BELLA LUNA FARMS, SNOHOMISH

Date: AUGUST 12, 2023

High in the snowy mountains of Whistler, British Columbia, Jenna Hoover’s and Grant Rico’s eyes first met on New Year’s Day. Two Washington natives crossing paths during separate trips to see friends—it was the kind of cosmic timing that writes its own script. On a sweet summer day, they hosted an alfresco wedding with décor that celebrated the natural surroundings at Bella Luna Farms. They designed the event as a love letter to the Pacific Northwest and highlighted their shared passions for food and the great outdoors. Once it was finished, guests meandered from the ceremony, held at the tranquil duck pond, to the glass Grape House for cocktails. That was followed by dinner under a billowing tent on the South Lawn and nonstop dancing in the A-frame barn. Elegant shades of green and white highlighted the venue’s splendor, while local products—such as Hood Canal oysters and Washington wines—continued to weave the newlyweds’ story through the day. Grant’s culinary expertise was evident in the thoughtfully crafted menu, which featured garden-fresh ingredients and recipe cards of the first dish he ever made for his wife. Jenna’s bridal look reflected her history as a ballet dancer, with a gown that exuded ethereal grace. Her bouquet contained her mother’s wedding crystal, while a sapphire ring belonging to her grandmother served as her “something blue.” The fun-loving couple’s favorite moment was letting loose with their bridal party before the ceremony, with music blasting, shaking off the jitters for pure joy. The couple advises others to “pause, breathe and take it all in. Trust your team to make the magic happen.” And magic it was. —Megan Simpson Teeter

STEPHANIE & CONNOR

Married & Celebrated: THE MANOR HOUSE AT PLEASANT BEACH VILLAGE, BAINBRIDGE ISLAND

Date: JULY 19, 2024

Stephanie Bird and Connor Lamoureux endeavored to shape and mold their wedding as carefully and intentionally as they had crafted their relationship. Under a seemingly never-ending blue July sky, the pair were married on the island where her father grew up, at the charming Tudor-style Manor House at Pleasant Beach Village. Taking her inspiration from the venue’s vintage grace, Stephanie wore a simple silk gown with a low back, paired with an airy double-tiered veil. In their dresses of pale pastels, the bridesmaids complemented the bride’s attire and bore bouquets of white calla lilies to echo her white ranunculus bouquet. Following a ceremony rich with white petals, the happy hour proved lively as a mariachi band, clad in shades of ivory, performed. The band, chosen to honor the bride’s heritage, serenaded guests as they sipped spicy margaritas and martinis of both the dirty and espresso variety. Connor’s name was on display, scripted on white linen as “Amor Lamoureux”—amoureux is French for “in love.” However, the most special feature for the happy couple was simply seeing their names displayed on a local theater marquee. Their names up in lights symbolized their shared passions and their palpable love. —Ryley Hoff

SABRINA & JAMES

Married: BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH, SEATTLE

Hindu Ceremony & Celebrated: THE WOODMARK HOTEL & STILL SPA, KIRKLAND

Date: MAY 18, 2024

Sabrina Upadhyay and James Innelli’s love story has been years in the making—14 to be exact, with more than four of those spent navigating the obstacle of being oceans apart. Their meet-cute was in college when James was so dazzled by Sabrina’s dancing that he convinced mutual friends to introduce them. Years later, on a misty Washington day, their long-awaited celebration brought together family and friends from all corners of the globe to witness their heartfelt, multicultural celebration. The day began with nuptials at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where the choir’s stirring “Ave Maria” filled the space. Sabrina carried a bouquet bursting with peonies, butterfly ranunculus and bleeding heart blooms. From there, the party moved to The Woodmark Hotel, a picturesque locale on Lake Washington, chosen for its serene lakeside views, which blended Sabrina’s freshwater conservation work and James’ love of nature. Under a mandap draped with marigold and carnation garlands, the Nepali Hindu ceremony unfolded with joy and reverence. As rain softly fell and the lake breeze swept through, the fire burned bright, connecting newlyweds and their guests to the elements. Following the ceremony, attendees couldn’t get enough of a playful game of tug-of-war (the bride’s team won) and the vibrant sunset-inspired florals adorning every corner. The reception was pure fun, featuring Sabrina and James’ choreographed first dance to “You Send Me” and “Adorn”—in honor of their history and joy. —Megan Simpson Teeter

Married & Celebrated: THE LOOKOUT LODGE, SNOHOMISH

Date: JUNE 22, 2024

Two years ago, Jensine Leung and Connor Rose’s love story began with an unforgettable night at a wedding in Ashland, Oregon. Not one for the dance floor, Connor asked Jensine to share a slow dance, creating a bond that endured even after he returned to Seattle. A few months and many miles later, they reunited in Portland, marking the official start of a romance that led to Jensine’s move to Seattle. Shortly afterward, Connor proposed. Their wedding venue, The Lookout Lodge, embodies their mutual love for the outdoors and gave their guests from afar the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. In honor of Jensine’s Chinese heritage, the day showcased vibrant red hues symbolizing luck, joy and happiness, complemented by gold accents representing prosperity. Décor was inspired by a cherished chinoiserie porcelain collection belonging to Jensine’s mother. In a touching tea ceremony, the couple honored their elders and sought blessings for a harmonious future. Friend and florist Megan Lauritzen designed a sustainable, foam-free semicircular floral arch using locally sourced blooms. This stunning arrangement was reused throughout the day to adorn the sweetheart table, cake and champagne tower. Memorable reception moments included Connor’s fraternity brothers singing “The Rose Song” to Jensine and guests sharing their blessings and advice in a video booth. The night closed with the couple dancing on a sparkler-lit dance floor to the song that brought them together. The following day, Jensine and Connor shared their joy, delivering all the wedding flowers to an assisted living facility, thus giving some of the day’s beauty to those who would appreciate it most. —Laura Cross

Married & Celebrated: THE RUINS, SEATTLE

Date: MAY 25, 2024

Nestled in the heart of Seattle, Cody Romano and Joycie Yu’s wedding was a magical experience aptly titled “Welcome to Joycoland.” Cody and Joycie’s fairy-tale romance began on Hinge in late 2021. United by a shared sense of humor, quick wit and creativity, the couple has a relationship that is defined by endless laughter and delightful quirks—perfectly captured by the engraving on their rings, which reads, “Gotcha, bitch <3.” As anticipated, their wedding at The Ruins was an extraordinary adventure that began with invitations featuring Polaroids and whimsical paper butterflies spiraling out of envelopes. The design was inspired by the interactive art of Meow Wolf, the fanciful elements of Alice in Wonderland and the theatricality of The Hunger Games’ capitol. From the bride’s entrance through a veil of fog to a staged game show during the ceremony, guests were surprised at every turn. Cody and Joycie even hired an actor to object during their vows, a moment that turned the wedding into a “Who Knows the Bride Best?” game show, complete with buzzers and the bride’s face on a spinning wheel. The floral arrangements, mostly crafted by Joycie, were a vibrant tapestry of faux florals complemented by live baby’s breath and ranunculus. “As people who love planning surprises and gift giving, seeing our guests’ reactions to the surprises and different details was our favorite part of the wedding,” says Joycie. “Do whatever you want! There are no rules! The best weddings are ones that reflect your relationship.” —Lara Burnap

ANNA & WALTER

Married & Celebrated: SEATTLE ASIAN ART MUSEUM

Date: JULY 20, 2024

Anna Jeszeck and Walter Cai’s love story began in 2016 when Anna’s high school best friend introduced her to Walter, a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington. Although their connection was initially platonic, their friendship blossomed into a romance as they navigated busy schedules and late-night adventures. Walter proposed with a jigsaw puzzle, one of Anna’s favorite activities, which was later displayed at their wedding alongside a Polaroid guest book. For their nuptials, they chose a sunset-inspired palette and incorporated luxuriant Pacific Northwest foliage. The ceremony at the Seattle Asian Art Museum embraced the venue’s Art Deco elegance while summery florals brought bright hues to the space. A dramatic asymmetrical floral arch with cascading foliage and sunset-toned blooms served as the focal point. With their best friend officiating—the same person who introduced them—Anna and Walter exchanged vows they had written together, sealing their commitment in a heartfelt moment. Following the ceremony, the floral arch and sculptures were repurposed to bring color and nature to the reception. The arch framed the entryway and created a backdrop for the couple’s central table. The tall floral-topped gold stands were placed on round tables throughout the room, while their floral bases were arranged along the central table, surrounded by crystal tea lights and floating candles, creating an enchanting atmosphere. —Laura Cross
