MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT
SCANNED IMAGES
In module 1, I start with scanned images. To be more specific, I took the photos of a plain croissant as the original prototype of its orthographic drawing. There are four elevations as shown in the graph.
Moreover, the croissant is cut from the middle into 4 pieces. All the section cuts and the bottom of the croissant was scanned. .

MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT
ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING
According to the scanned images, I have made the orthographic drawing. The techniques I used are basically hatching and shading: The front, the side and the section cuts are created by shading, while the plain view is by hatching.

NEW MARIO WORLD
AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION (Hand-drawn drawing by pencil)
Step 1: Setting up a 200x200mm square as the bonds of my Mario’s world
Step 2: Drawing the objects according to the original screenshoot from the back.
Step3: Using T-square and set square to keep adding objects to fill the ground.

CHARACTERS

GOOMBA
Next step is to trace the drawing by using Illustrator. I add four characters in Mario World. They are all from Mario World: Mario, Troopa, Toad, Goomba. Gaming objects are also added: a mushroom and a fire flower.

ILLUSTRATED PROJECTION
(Hand-drawn axonometric projection by fineliner)
In my word, sun is located at the right side of the diagram. Except the setting created according to the screenshots, I use my imagination to fill the space. The yellow objects are a totem from the game: Memory Valley. The totems are watching the characters inside the forest. From the inside, Koopa is an archer, and his arrow is aiming at Mario.

PAPER LANDSCAPE
3D PANELLING
Paper Landscape is created by 3D-modelling software. The tools I use is Rhino 3d panelling tool.

PAPER LANDSCAPE
UNROLLED TEMPLATES
To create the physical model, I use 3d-panelling tool to unroll the model. Thus, I can use the templates to generate the paper model.

Bottom view of my paper landscape The material I use for making the physical model is Ivory Card 290gsm. The method I used for cutting the unrolled templates from Ivory Card is laser cutting. By folding the templates and glue them together, the overall landscape is formed. To fix the model, I used clips.

INVISIBLE CITY
PERSPECTIVE 1
The object I choose are a spiral staircase, a artisan. I also create a scene of cockfight as Marco Polo relates. Apart from the book itself, I also add other objects based on my understanding. The background is the street in the middle ages. I add some animals in my work: an owl, two birds, a wolf who is looking at the artisan, and a small mouse under his chair.

INVISIBLE CITY
PERSPECTIVE 2
The reading has talked about how Marco Polo sitted down and seen the young people go by. The object in this scene is a few young men and women. I put this sence into a forest. This is to show the fading of prosperity. I also add a few animals here, a gecko, a rabbit, a snacke and a few birds. I actually use the same kind of bird from Marco Polo’s memory, which was watching the cockfight, but now watching a sleeping tiger.

The first time I have heard about FoD: Represrentation is an event held by Unimelb Design department: Focus on Melbourne. At that time, I was in a moment of choosing which degree to do. During that event, there’s previous students’ work outside, and a teacher is talking to the parents how FoD works. I was fully attracted by the setting of this course from module one to module four. This course is one the of the main reason that drives me to do the Bachelor of Design. From the experience of doing this course, I have learnt the role of representation in design and architecture. Moreover, there are many skills I gained from doing modules. From module one, I discovered drawing techniques: hatching and shading. From module two, I have acquired how to use Illustrator and get to understanding how scale, orthographic projection works in representation. In module three, I used 3d-modelling software for the first time. I get to know how to rebuild 3dmodule into a physical one. In module four, to create the two scenes inside the invisible city, I spend tons of time on learning photoshop. After all, my observation and visual analysis skills have been improved through doing the four modules. One disappointment is about my module three. After having the template for cutting, I choose to use laser cutting to cut the unrolled templates. The paper turns out to be a little bit burnt, and it does affect the overall looks of my physical module. I plan to rebuild my module three in the future and do all the cutting by hand.
