SOUTH AFRICA CELEBRATE NELSON MANDELA MONTH

The month of July is an important month in the South African calendar for every one, it is a month with no race, the diversity come out in a beautiful dance and unity to landing a hand to the most unfortunate, putting a smile and invoking a sense of hope and restoring dignity. The whole month from 1 to 31 July everyone is invited to make everyday a Mandela Day, all you have to do is to contribute at least 67 or more minutes of your time to help those in need. Nelson Mandela once said “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” In July, South Africa celebrates former President Nelson

Mandela’s birthday. The 18 July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day, as South Africans we embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July. This gives everyone the opportunity to heed the call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them. A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. As each person acts, they fuel momentum toward positive change, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mr Mandela’s values – fighting injustice, helping people in need and practicing reconciliation.

Some people might want to do something but are not sure what, here are some ideas of what you can do for Mande la Month and to contribute to helping develop a better

and caring society. • Contact your local HIV or ganisation and find out how you can help. • Help at your local hospice. • Many terminally ill people have no friends or family who can visit them. Take a little time to have a chat and find out what they need. • Donate toys to the children’s ward at your local hospital. • Tutor kids in a school subject you are good at. • Donate your old computer to a school. • Donate books to a school. Find more areas where you can volunteer your services on the Nelson Mandela Day website. Background: Mr Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994. As a champion of reconciliation, he was instrumental in the Truth and

Reconciliation Commission, which was set up by South Africa’s Government of National Unity to help deal with the atrocities of apartheid. Before his presidency, Mandela was heavily involved in anti-apartheid activities. He served 27 years in prison, many of which were spent with other sentenced freedom fighters. While officially retired, he continued to voice his opinion on topical humanitarian issues and campaigns globally for peace, children and the fight against HIV and AIDS. Government calls on all South Africans to contribute to the social and economic security of Africans, by living the values of our Constitution that provides for the rights of all people living in our country and the affirms democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom for all. Remember to make every day a Mandela day.

EDITORS NOTES Isaac Mavuso Publishing Editor

It was just a month ago in June when South Africa we commemorated forty-three years since the Soweto uprising including the death of Hector Peterson and celebrating youth month. This time we are celebrating yet another month in respect of the former state icon Nelson Mandela, well this is his request that we give at least 67 minutes of our time to impacting the lives of the less fortunate and hive them. It is our duty as a people to create a positive change.

In august we are going to celebrate woman’s month and the irony of all these celebrations for me is that we are celebrating a painful past it is where we come from, where it was sworn that we would never be what we have a black people today.

KEEPING UP

WITH THE PUMPS

A LITTLE SIGHT OF RELIEF FOR MOTORIST

Over the past few years and more so in the recent months the price of petrol has really turned in to a reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, we are on the other hand having to deal with fuel fluctuations. We are keeping up with the pumps. The Automobile Association (AA) released a statement on the 14 June 2019, it shared a light on the possibility of fuel prices might be going down in July. AA was confident that motorists will be treated to a petrol price drop this month. The association on the statement release on the 1 July is said the will be a drop in the price of fuel, the price of petrol will see a price drop of 95 cents per litre and 96 cents per litre for 95 and 93 grades, respectively, diesel will be coming down by 75 cents per litre and 76 cents per litre AA Spokesperson Layton Beard says these decreases are due to retreating oil prices. Fuel fluctuations depends on the strength of the rand and somewhat internal and external influences. Beard says the Association hopes to see more certainty in economic policy as it affects the strength of the rand which in turn affects the petrol price. But for now, let’s take the moment to exhale and enjoy the sun this winter while it last.

THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IS HERE, STOP SAYING IT IS COMING, THIS IS US AND OUR LEADERS BEING IN DENIAL ABOUT IT.

The reality of the matter is that it has been here for years. That we have been a bit slow to realise it does not push it back. The denial of this reality is going to cost us dearly, we are already feeling the brunt look at all the companies that are retrenching considering increased technology such as smart phones. Look around you and you will realise is here. Over the years company, to succeed draw and depended on labour intensive work force and today such is no-longer the case. Today banks are not opening more branches yet that does not mean the is reduced clients. Baking has change but not for the bottom line, this is the cost of convenience. WELCOMES THIRTY YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS FOR THE 2019 O R A N G E C O R N E R S I N C U B AT I O N P R O G R A M M E

THIRTY ENTREPRENEURS FROM JOHANNESBURG AND DIEPSLOOT JOINT ORANGE CORNERS 2019 ENTREPRENEURIAL INCUBATOR PROGRAMME. ON THE 12 OF JUNE 2019 HEINEKEN SOUTH AFRICA ANNOUNCE THAT 30 ENTREPRENEURS THAT HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2019 ORANGE CORNERS ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAMME. ORANGE CORNERS SOUTH AFRICA IS A JOZI-BASED BUSINESS INCUBATOR, WHICH EMPOWERS START-UPS WITHIN JOHANNESBURG AND DIEPSLOOT TO ACCELERATE THE GROWTH OF THEIR BUSINESSES THROUGH THE DELIVERY OF PHYSICAL WORKSPACES, TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP AS WELL AS BUSINESS COACHING. The Orange Corners initiative was established in 2016 by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa to support Dutch-origin companies operating in South Africa by empowering local entrepreneurs with tools to enable the entrepreneurs to be successful thus helping businesses to thrive. To date, Orange Corners SA has helped 135 entrepreneurs, and over 540 training hours and business development support. The initiative has facilitated 12 masterclasses for participating local entrepreneurs. The 2019 intake saw 390 applications

PAGE 10 - 12

of which 30 entrepreneurs between the ages 18 and 35 years selected for the programme. The group includes 11 entrepreneurs and micro enterprise founders from Diepsloot, operating in a variety of business interests from poultry farming to catering, car washes, and construction to clothing branding services. The subsequent 19 comprise of high growth start-up and SME founders based in Johannesburg, who also operate within a large variety of industries including gardening and landscaping services, IT,architecture, construction, digital marketing, and the manufacturing of cleaning products.

“The programme aligns with Heineken’s focus on ‘growing with communities’ and is key to enabling small businesses to become the project partners of the future.” Said Millicent Maroga, Corporate Affairs Director for Heineken South Africa “Heineken is a proud co-founder of the Orange Corners initiative, which directly correlates to the company’s global sustainability programme Brewing A Better World, through which the company has made a global commitment to contribute positively and invest in communities,” Maroga explained. This is vital within an economy in which small, medium and

micro enterprise businesses increasingly come under pressure, with more than 70% of new businesses closing-down within two years of opening their doors. The approach regarding the 2019 Orange Corners intake, included a more bespoke programme for each business. This means that it has been tailored to fit the entrepreneurs’ needs within their respective businesses, moving away from the more standardised approach of previous years. In order to achieve this, the team completed in-depth assessments for each of the entrepreneurs, to identify their business gaps, which assisted us

in ensuring each entrepreneur gets the specific support they require in the business area in which they need it The Orange Conner will not only empower the entrepreneurs but will also provide access to available market to leverage from, all in the bid to them grow their businesses. “The key focus for this year is on helping these entrepreneurs gain more self-confidence, along with the knowledge, tools and resources they need to leverage their business ideas.” Maroga added.

FOUR WAYS TO FIND TENDERS AND RFQ’S . . Government advertise their tenders and quotes in various platforms such as newspapers, tender bulletins, website (local, provincial and national) and many will be posted in the government procurement offices and some in municipal offices as per the need.

1. Print publications: Newspapers, a lot of tenders and RFQ’s are advertised in newspapers and other publications (local, provincial or national publications), you just need to make sure you learn which publications contain tenders and RFQ’s relevant to you and get those. 2. Online Search: Make time to searching on the internet for available tenders. You will find plenty of available RFQ’s. There are few challenges though. You will find outdated RFQ’s. When you search online you need to realise first when you search for RFQ’s you will be directed to overseas ones. When you search you must write RFQ in South Africa or Johannesburg and you can also add a month and the year.

Treasury with all the available tenders and RFQ for that week. The bulletin is free from the Department National Treasury’s website (www.treasury.gov.za).

4. Corporates Parastatals : Corporates use their own bulletins to publicise tender bulletins and on their websites as well as other online platforms (tender websites and newspaper) So all you need to do is find a way to constantly check out on their websites for updates and tenders and RFQ’s relevant to you. These could be out on daily basis; big companies including parastatals can have a lot of things happening from different departments and advertised on different time, so be on the lookout.

Inconclusion: The other way is to register online on tender bulletins and websites some will send an alert when a tender or RFQ is out. There are a lot of free one’s and some might ask you for a fee to subscribe on their sites, your choice, if you not sure look ask around. Don’t forget to register on the database 3. Government: Government puts of the companies and organisation tenders and RFQ’s using a tender you hoping to do business, and bulletin a large file that is put out make sure your things are in order. weekly from The National

DAVID MAKHURA GAUTENG PREMIER TO FOCUS ON BUILDING THE TOWNSHIP ECONOMY nership with the Taxi industry and municipalities we will transform taxi rank facilities to become vibrant economic nodes in all townships and CBDs.

In his State of the Province address the Premier David Makhura expressed their sexcitement on the ground-breaking work on the township economy that is championed by President Ramaphosa. He said, “ We believe more jobs can be created by small and medium-sized businesses if they get appropriate support from the whole of government.” The Premier also reiterated the lessons learnt from supporting township business through infrastructure development and access to markets through government procurement that was worth over R20 billion, as well as the

intention to intensify the support looking in the following areas. Enforcing procurement townships businesses to 30% of Gauteng Provincial Government’s procurement budget. Ensuring that all SMMEs and township businesses doing business with Government are paid within 15 days on submitting the invoice, through the e-invoicing platform to expedites payment. To invest infrastructure that supports clusters of township businesses to expand, access markets and prosper. This will include rejuvenating township industrial parks, agri-hubs and local produce markets. In part

The Premier want to giving township enterprises, SMMEs and co-operatives the opportunity to maintain and repair government facilities, equipment, furniture and infrastructure. “Such SMMEs will employ and train young people in technical trades. Repositioning and the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller to provide funding and business development support for the growth and sustainability of SMMEs and co-operatives.” He added. Makhura wants to develop a Township Economy Development Act which will make it easier, affordable and quicker to register, open and operate a business in a township. Surely the success of all this will bring about economic development and sustainable livelihood in the townships. In the meantime, let the hustle continue and let entrepreneurs get ready by building compliant business. Success is about process and less about the destination.
