There are some pretty disruptive local watch brands on the market, all trying to push the boundaries of innovation and competing for a space in the market. LN Watches, Ledjoy and AmaBhengu Fashion are three of them.

Lunga Ntuli, a young KwaZuluNatal entrepreneur and community activist, is the founder of the LN range of African-inspired, individually hand-beaded watches. A former car guard, football and cricket coach, journalist and author-publisher of a series of popular relationship books, Ntuli comes from the small village of Groutville, home of SA’s first Nobel Peace Laureate, the late Chief Albert Luthuli. This is where Ntuli works with young people in creating watches so original and striking that they’ve become an instant sensation. The late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife, Leah, were both gifted with LN watches beaded with their names on their birthdays.

The watches have caught the eye of many visitors and are now being worn in the UK, Portugal, Italy and beyond. Corporate clients are also part of the growing LN success story, commissioning watches beaded in their company colours for a new take on traditional long-service timepiece awards.

LN Watches combines Ntuli’s commitment to job creation in his community and his interest in “matters of the heart”. The inspiration came originally from the “ucu” – a bracelet that a woman gives a man to symbolise her undying love for him. In return, he gives her an “umqhele”, which signifies his loyalty to her.

Bhengu (28) is the founder and CEO of AmaBhengu Fashion.

He obtained a financial management diploma from Umgungundlovu FET College, where he specialised in entrepreneurship and business management, and knew it was the time to make something great out of his studies and life.

He began his entrepreneurial journey on the streets of Pietermaritzburg, selling several imported brand watches. Once he had established connections and knew enough about timepieces, he partnered with international brands, designers and assemblers to establish his own watch brand, AmaBhengu Fashion.

These are mechanical watches that function with gears and a main string which is wound periodically, as opposed running on batteries. The watches are made from crystal minerals and are waterproof, with luminous hands.

A (GORGEOUS!) CASE FOR NONDIAMOND RINGS

While diamonds are still the most popular gemstones used in engagement rings, in recent years, other stones and ethical diamond alternatives have become increasingly sought after. Below we’ve rounded up popular alternatives for modern couples, from lab-grown diamonds to unique precious gemstones.

Lab-grown diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds offer the same luxurious sparkle and resilience as natural ones. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds; the only difference is how they’re created and the fact that they’re 50-60% more affordable. However, it’s important to note that lab-grown diamonds must be stated as such by jewellers.

Moissanite

Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral which is very rare and can’t be found in sizes large enough to be cut into even a 1ct gemstone. For that reason, moissanite used in jewellery is entirely lab-made. The main difference between moissanite and

diamonds is the fact that moissanite is considerably cheaper, but possesses more fire and brilliance than diamonds (or, indeed, any other gemstones). Since moissanite is doublerefractive, it’s cut differently from diamonds to enhance its sparkle.

Cubic zirconias

Cubic zirconia, also known as CZs, are manufactured gemstones that look like diamonds. They’re colourless or white, which allows manufacturers to brighten them with colouring agents. Diamonds have a much higher refractive index and a lower dispersion rate than cubic zirconia. However, while diamonds may be the prettier and more valuable choice, cubic zirconias are decent and much more affordable alternatives.

While there are many spectacular diamond ring alternatives, a natural diamond continues to be the most popular engagement stone.

Pearl engagement rings

While pearls are much more delicate and not recommended for everyday wear, a pearl engagement ring has an elegant look that’s hard to resist. Paired with diamonds or other coloured gemstones, a pearl can be a unique option that will really stand out.

When it comes to shopping for a diamond engagement ring, the importance of being educated can’t be stressed enough. Even if you don’t know exactly what the four "Cs" are, you’ll no doubt have heard the term in reference to engagement rings (for the record, they stand for carat, cut, colour and clarity and together, they determine the quality and value of your diamond). However, the only way to prove this is with a certificate – the fifth "C". Without a certificate, not only do

you not have proof that what you’re buying is worth the money you’re paying, but you also have no proof that it’s even a real diamond, which means you’ll run into problems when trying to insure or re-sell your ring down the line.

Although lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds, they do differ considerably in price. Lovers of natural diamonds therefore want to be extra-sure that they're purchasing a diamond that wasn't created in a laboratory.

Never, ever purchase a diamond that doesn’t come with a certificate from a recognised, independent diamond grading lab. No certificate, no diamond!

A birthstone ring can represent the couple, the date they met, the date of the proposal, the future wedding date or any other significant occasion.

There are no rules when it comes to selecting a gemstone for your engagement ring. All that matters is that you and your partner love it!

It’s been 31 years since Andreas Salver Manufacturing Jewellers opened its doors in 1992 in Johannesburg and owner Andreas Salver has never stopped creating magic. He came back to visit a few times after that and the fifth time, he presented me with a gemstone collection that absolutely blew my mind. MetCon, one of the most advanced refineries in SA, recently partnered with Austrianbased Invicon Chemical Solutions to introduce an innovative colour design approach to the local jewellery industry

In celebrating the launch of this new technology – HyCeram, LuxArt and Luxon – MetCon partnered with seven prominent local jewellers to showcase their interpretation of colourful, wearable art at Jewellex Africa, Africa’s premier jewellery and watch trade exhibition, which was held 3-4 September at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg.

The seven designs featured the technology in a spectacular way, each with a unique story and inspiration behind it.

Burkindy brings

Burkina Faso to New York

Burkindy, a jewellery designer originally from Burkina Faso, draws on his homeland for inspiration. Patterns and shapes found on African masks and artefacts, as well as other symbols of West African culture, all find their way into his pieces made in yellow or white gold.

Hand-made in Brooklyn, New York, the textured rings and cuffs are set with emeralds, blue topaz, diamonds and ruby to add hints of colour.

Manhattan retailer Sartoria Studio currently stocks a robust collection of Burkindy’s designs crafted in gold, sterling silver, brass, gemstones, leather and beadwork.

Fearless Feathers

The arena presence and positive attitude of American-Israeli show-jumper and Olympian Dani G Waldman caught the attention of equestrian jeweller Karina Brez. Their collaboration on a new collection, Fearless Feathers by Dani G, includes rings and bracelets. The collection consists of six designs sporting a feather and a horse hoof. Made in 14ct yellow, white or rose gold, it's available in alldiamonds, a rainbow of sapphire colours or a blue or pink sapphire ombre.

Gem party

Melissa Spalten, founder of Los Angeles-based fine jewellery brand M Spalten, loves designing with unexpected gemstone combinations. In her new Gemfetti linear earrings, she combines trillion cuts, oval cabochons with emerald cuts and round-faceted stones. The designs feature anything from three to eight

stones such as Mexican fire opals, turquoises, garnets, pink tourmalines, amethysts, iolites, opal doublets, citrines, peridots and chrome diopsides. The eight gem iterations have been styled as shoulderdusters. All the earrings can be designed with or without diamond huggies and custom Gemfetti earrings can be designed in coloured gems of the client’s choice.

Secret Garden

Secret Garden, a nature-inspired collection designed by Logan Hollowell for Brilliant Earth, blooms with lab-grown diamonds, pink sapphires and emeralds. The line comprises 12 styles set in floral, butterfly and thorn motifs.

Inspired by the delicate strength and resilience of a rose, it includes earrings, necklaces and rings. Its centrepiece is an 8ct lab-grown diamond thorn collar adorned with 138 round lab-grown diamonds set in recycled 14ct white or yellow gold.

Charity jewellery launch

The MasterCard x Bevza Collection, created by Ukrainian designer Svitlana Bevza, consists of a pin, a pendant and a pair of earrings that combine kalyna with the iconic MasterCard symbol. Kalyna, or the red viburnum tree, has been a cultural symbol for Ukrainians for centuries. Each piece designed and produced in Kyiv, Ukraine, is part of a zero-waste initiative. All of the net proceeds will support the Ukraine House DC Foundation to finance prosthetics and rehabilitation programmes for Ukrainian children injured in the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Kalyna collection is available exclusively on the MasterCard Priceless platform at priceless.com and can be purchased by cardholders in SA.

Rococo motifs unite signets, pendants

British fine jeweller Cece FeinHughes’ Ribbon collection is inspired by 18th-century Rococostyle paintings. The five beautifully hand-painted champlevé enamel signet rings and pendants have been hand-crafted in 18ct gold and decorated with enamelled ribbons and star-set diamonds.

“I’ve paired beautiful painterly ribbons with engravings such as skulls and crossbones, compasses, and hearts and arrows. I think these extra elements add a tattoo-like edge to

each piece,” explains Fein-Hughes. She’s matched each engraving on the small signet rings and pendants to the colour of the ribbon.

On her Instagram page, goldsmith and jewellery designer Rachel Quinn describes herself as a “shameless lover of hearts”. It’s no surprise, then, that her latest assortment of pinkie rings – set to glow at Melee The Show – are chubby hearts which have been given a pastel treatment with enamel.

“I find hearts endlessly inspiring and wanted to make an already joyful shape even more so by adding colourful enamel patterns to a nice, plump heart shape. I chose pastels for their sweet candy-coloured hues, making the rings graphic, yet soft,” says Quinn, who hand-crafts her pieces in her Los Angeles studio.

Her leafy offerings titled Mano De Leon (MDL) has earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces made in 18ct gold and employs carved malachite, onyx or agate with gold inlay over the motifs.

“I like foliage and the leaf Mano De Leon is a common foliage that I grew up seeing. It has big green leaves and a heartlike shape. It’s elegant, but wild at the same time,” explains the designer, who’s studded the pieces with pink seed pearls and freshwater pearls.

The Ribbon collection was launched in September at Twist Online.
