Spring, and all the beautiful things that come with this season of new beginnings, is here.
There’s something about the change of seasons that always gets me excited about styles. During autumn I long for warm greens, yellows and orangeyreds. When spring arrives, I crave everything that’s light, bright and fresh.
Here at JZA, spring is our favourite time of year. It’s when we officially get to see the

blooming of nature, growth in ourselves and the flourishing of our personal style. It’s the time when we begin to ditch our more muted tones and embrace the vibrant colours we’ve been waiting to wear all winter.
Gold and silver will never go out of style, but a pop of colour is unmistakable – and irresistible! Adding pops of colour, texture and new, striking conversation pieces to your everyday jewellery is a great way to stay in the know this spring.

The days are getting longer, the weather’s getting warmer and the flowers are starting to bloom again. It’s official: spring is finally here! But what does that mean for your jewellery collection?
To make the transition into the new season easy, we’ve identified the six biggest jewellery trends right now: Bold blooms Florals for spring – we should all know by now that this trend will never die. Wear yours delicately or with pizzazz and a statement of colour and size.
After combing through the best spring 2023 jewellery trends, we share the top pretty pieces you need in your jewellery box this season
Bangles on bangles Cue Beyoncé: It’s time to “cuff it, cuff it, baby!” Cuffs continue to dominate the runways, from thick sheets of metal wrapped around wrists to mixing metals by piling on contrasting cuffs. Try pairing large and thin cuffs for a chic, stacked effect.
The allure of statement shouldergrazing danglers is hard to resist. Dusting up plenty of style and magic with each sway, this deeply architectural and dramatic accessory easily makes enough impact to encapsulate any ensemble. This may be why these earrings have featured on runways for seasons and show no signs of slowing down this spring.
Thick chains If you’re wanting to make a statement this spring, go for chunky chain-link necklaces, from oversized chokers to sparkling silver links. This is great news for those aiming to dress up their everyday and work fashion: throwing on a chunky necklace is a quick and easy way to embellish an outfit, while keeping it sophisticated.
Shelling out Spring always arrives with a renewed love of the beach and everything that comes with it. Replicated through nautical theming, we can expect to see shellinspired pieces, as well as natural materials. They’re everyday earrings and necklaces that you can easily throw on for a grocery run or a stroll on the sand.
Sculptural silver Artful flashes of silver were seen throughout the spring 2023 collections, so swap your goto gold pieces for cool silver alternatives. When shopping for silver jewellery this year, keep one thing in mind: the more sculptural, the better. If your outfits aren’t making you smile this spring, it might be time to update your jewellery collection. The right piece of jewellery can be just the thing to put the “fun” back in “functional”.
Often associated with loyalty, wisdom and nobility, sapphires hold profound significance. In various cultures, this stone is believed to bring protection, spiritual insight and inner peace
Delve into a world where Middle Eastern brands, including TOi Fine Jewelry with its sparkle sapphire earrings, La Marquise Jewellery's sapphire diamond studs and Noora Shawqi's exquisite vatina ring, are harnessing the allure of sapphires in breathtakingly innovative ways. These brands re-imagine this cherished gemstone, infusing it with new life and purpose.
If you’re looking for the most popular chain necklaces for men, you’ve come to the right place.
Curb chains are classic, featuring a series of uniform links that lie flat when worn, creating a sophisticated and versatile look. A curb chain style is the most popular option for men due to its understated appeal.
Rope chains are also perennial favourites. The elegant and beautiful design looks amazing on its own, but carries any pendant just as well.
Figaro chains are characterised by a pattern of three small links followed by one elongated one. This is an eye-catching look, perfect for both casual and formal occasions.
Inexpensive and lightweight, leather necklaces are a great option for a man’s first necklace. It’s advisable to be sure that you enjoy wearing necklaces before investing in a more substantial, costlier piece of jewellery.

If you prefer an artistic look, then a feather necklace might be a better choice. These necklaces are stylish, versatile and beautiful. They often feature metal chains, with plastic beads or shells and a crafted metallic leather instead of a pendant.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or toying with the idea of trying on a chain persona, don’t overthink it – choose whatever speaks to you and your personal style.

Crafted in two thrilling steel and gold versions, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche honours the 60th anniversaries of two legends: the TAG Heuer Carrera and the Porsche 911
AG Heuer and Porsche are two icons which came together in 2021 to celebrate their shared history. The partnership has led to several collaborations that perfectly capture their dedication to precision, innovation and design. Now they present yet another showstopper: the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche.
The timeless style of the TAG Heuer Carrera mirrors the legendary Porsche 911’s flawless proportions, graceful curves and spirited demeanour. Sixty years on, both racing icons remain inimitable and immortal.
The watch’s captivating visual references to the Porsche dashboards of the 1970s add a dynamic edge to this speed-driven timepiece. The result is a passionate, aesthetic homage to a racing legend.
Designed to measure short time intervals with impressive accuracy, the Maison’s innovative TH20-08 movement mirrors the acceleration of the first Porsche 911 – the Porsche 901 – from 0-100km/h in 9,1 seconds: a technical milestone.
Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta 18-1750, vibrates with vim and vigour. It’s a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength.
Viva Magenta is brave and fearless. It’s a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.
It’s both powerful and empowering. It’s a new, animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint: an electrifying and unbounded shade that makes a distinct statement. Garnets come in a multitude of colours, including green and yellow, but are usually associated with the deep red variety from the minerals almandite, pyrope or rhodolite. With a hardness of 7-7,5 on the Mohs scale, they’re durable enough for daily wear.
Ruby is often referred to as the king of gemstones and is a variety of the mineral corundum. Like their sister gems sapphires, rubies are second only to diamonds in hardness, which makes them a good choice for everyday wear. When purchasing a ruby, look for
mixed-cut ovals and cushions, as these cuts bring out the vibrant red of the stone. Rubies can display a rare optical phenomenon called asterism, which has star-like rays. When shopping for a ruby, it’s important to ensure you know what you’re buying. Synthetic rubies are popular and many are sold in jewellery today.
Cherished by kings and emperors, red spinels have a long and illustrious history. Many famous “rubies” were actually red spinels, illustrating how very similar these gems can be in appearance. The

quality of natural spinel has attracted attention and appreciation in recent years, so its presence and value in the market have increased as well.
Red diamonds
Natural-colour red diamonds are among the rarest available. Colour intensity often equates to higher val ue, so the purest and most saturated red diamonds are the most desirable.

Jewellery is often the last thing you put on before you walk out of the door. Ledjoy is a proudly South African luxury watch brand that tell stories of resilience and strength by driving professional people to lead with purpose because “ke nako”, a Northern Sesotho phrase meaning “it’s time”. And it’s indeed time that Africa produced quality watches designed to match her peoples’ resilient characters and personalities.
Ledjoy watches are made with a Miyota movement, a reliable mechanism imported from Japan. It has a powersaving function that detects motion and automatically saves up to 30% of energy. This increases the lifespan of the watches and makes them eco-friendly.
Ledjoy’s story started in the rural area of GaMashashane on the outskirts of Polokwane
in Limpopo, where the brand’s co-founder, Lethabo “Lejoy” Motibane, used to walk 10km to high school and back. In those five years of walking every day, she realised the importance of time management. Marketing facilitator Mokopane Ledwaba, the brand’s other co-founder who was its first employee and is now its MD, turned Motibane’s vision into a business.
There are some pretty disruptive local watch brands on the market, all trying to push the boundaries of innovation and competing for a space in the market. LN Watches, Ledjoy and AmaBhengu Fashion are three of them.
SA has some seriously stylish watch brands that are making waves with designs that are both functional and fashionable▶ Ledjoy
Lunga Ntuli, a young KwaZuluNatal entrepreneur and community activist, is the founder of the LN range of African-inspired, individually hand-beaded watches. A former car guard, football and cricket coach, journalist and author-publisher of a series of popular relationship books, Ntuli comes from the small village of Groutville, home of SA’s first Nobel Peace Laureate, the late Chief Albert Luthuli. This is where Ntuli works with young people in creating watches so original and striking that they’ve become an instant sensation. The late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife, Leah, were both gifted with LN watches beaded with their names on their birthdays.
The watches have caught the eye of many visitors and are now being worn in the UK, Portugal, Italy and beyond. Corporate clients are also part of the growing LN success story, commissioning watches beaded in their company colours for a new take on traditional long-service timepiece awards.
LN Watches combines Ntuli’s commitment to job creation in his community and his interest in “matters of the heart”. The inspiration came originally from the “ucu” – a bracelet that a woman gives a man to symbolise her undying love for him. In return, he gives her an “umqhele”, which signifies his loyalty to her.
Pietermaritzburg-born Zamani
Bhengu (28) is the founder and CEO of AmaBhengu Fashion.
He obtained a financial management diploma from Umgungundlovu FET College, where he specialised in entrepreneurship and business management, and knew it was the time to make something great out of his studies and life.
He began his entrepreneurial journey on the streets of Pietermaritzburg, selling several imported brand watches. Once he had established connections and knew enough about timepieces, he partnered with international brands, designers and assemblers to establish his own watch brand, AmaBhengu Fashion.
These are mechanical watches that function with gears and a main string which is wound periodically, as opposed running on batteries. The watches are made from crystal minerals and are waterproof, with luminous hands.
While diamonds are still the most popular gemstones used in engagement rings, in recent years, other stones and ethical diamond alternatives have become increasingly sought after. Below we’ve rounded up popular alternatives for modern couples, from lab-grown diamonds to unique precious gemstones.
Lab-grown diamonds offer the same luxurious sparkle and resilience as natural ones. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds; the only difference is how they’re created and the fact that they’re 50-60% more affordable. However, it’s important to note that lab-grown diamonds must be stated as such by jewellers.
Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral which is very rare and can’t be found in sizes large enough to be cut into even a 1ct gemstone. For that reason, moissanite used in jewellery is entirely lab-made. The main difference between moissanite and
diamonds is the fact that moissanite is considerably cheaper, but possesses more fire and brilliance than diamonds (or, indeed, any other gemstones). Since moissanite is doublerefractive, it’s cut differently from diamonds to enhance its sparkle.
While diamonds have been synonymous with engagement rings for over 100 years, they aren’t the only option out there. In fact, many couples are now seeking alternatives, not only to save money, but to have something more originalColton James NWJ Jewellery
Cubic zirconias
Cubic zirconia, also known as CZs, are manufactured gemstones that look like diamonds. They’re colourless or white, which allows manufacturers to brighten them with colouring agents. Diamonds have a much higher refractive index and a lower dispersion rate than cubic zirconia. However, while diamonds may be the prettier and more valuable choice, cubic zirconias are decent and much more affordable alternatives.
The secret fifth "C"
While there are many spectacular diamond ring alternatives, a natural diamond continues to be the most popular engagement stone.
While pearls are much more delicate and not recommended for everyday wear, a pearl engagement ring has an elegant look that’s hard to resist. Paired with diamonds or other coloured gemstones, a pearl can be a unique option that will really stand out.
When it comes to shopping for a diamond engagement ring, the importance of being educated can’t be stressed enough. Even if you don’t know exactly what the four "Cs" are, you’ll no doubt have heard the term in reference to engagement rings (for the record, they stand for carat, cut, colour and clarity and together, they determine the quality and value of your diamond). However, the only way to prove this is with a certificate – the fifth "C". Without a certificate, not only do
you not have proof that what you’re buying is worth the money you’re paying, but you also have no proof that it’s even a real diamond, which means you’ll run into problems when trying to insure or re-sell your ring down the line.
Although lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds, they do differ considerably in price. Lovers of natural diamonds therefore want to be extra-sure that they're purchasing a diamond that wasn't created in a laboratory.
Never, ever purchase a diamond that doesn’t come with a certificate from a recognised, independent diamond grading lab. No certificate, no diamond!
A birthstone ring can represent the couple, the date they met, the date of the proposal, the future wedding date or any other significant occasion.
There are no rules when it comes to selecting a gemstone for your engagement ring. All that matters is that you and your partner love it!
Leave no stone unturned

It’s been 31 years since Andreas Salver Manufacturing Jewellers opened its doors in 1992 in Johannesburg and owner Andreas Salver has never stopped creating magic. His latest collection, Trending Fashion, is a range of exclusive pieces featuring a stunning array of coloured gemstones. What makes the collection even more distinct is the remarkable story behind it.
“My dad left me before I turned five. I only knew him as a coppersmith and sculptor,” he recalls. “A few months ago, an 83-year-old man called Michael walked into my office telling me he’d once employed my father and shared a few stories on what a good man Jurgen Salver was.
Andreas Salver Manufacturing Jewellers’ latest collection was launched earlier this month at Jewellex Africa. It’s a captivating collection of exceptionally lively, coloured gemstone pieces – just in time for spring
“We instantly developed a warm bond and hugged as if we’d known each other for years. He came back to visit a few times after that and the fifth time, he presented me with a gemstone collection that absolutely blew my mind. I’m sure there were well over 1 000 gemstones, some of which I’d never seen before. All are of magnificent quality, with immense value – beautiful stones that sparkled with life.
“I've always specialised in making what other people want – everything made to order. I’m a master at grabbing an image out of someone else’s brain and putting it to paper. Michael had brought me not only these magnificent gems, but fields of inspiration. This was my chance to shine!
“I’m very excited about this new, unconventional collection of sparkling gem colours with off-the-wall gold structures. The range is easy and fun to wear, including items that will warm the wearers’ hearts and that they’ll love more each day.
“I have a vision: fashion trending. I feel that I’m ahead of the curve. Everything’s aligned: the planets, the stars and my new creations,” says Salver.

Jewellers are rediscovering the luxurious possibilities of wood, allowing us to appreciate its beauty in a new light.
Who would have thought that women would want to replace diamonds and pearls with wooden accessories? Yet, creative and contemporary, they offer various expressions and several appealing benefits.
One of the primary advantages of wooden jewellery is its light weight. Unlike metal counterparts, wooden pieces are comfortable to wear for extended periods without causing discomfort or strain.
Wooden jewellery is also hypo-allergenic. If you wear a wooden ring, your finger won't swell up, itch or discolour, as it could with certain metals. Natural wood is also healthier to wear because bacteria can’t survive on its surface, thanks to its natural antimicrobial properties.
Wooden jewellery is also much more sustainable and environmentally friendly than other jewellery. Wood ages gracefully and lasts a long time, which makes it the perfect heirloom to pass down through generations. It's also considerably cheaper than gemstones or precious metals, making it safer to wear and ideal for travelling.
Wooden jewellery showcases the creativity and craftsmanship of a growing group of talented artists. Each piece is unique and carries a distinctive charm, allowing wearers to express their individuality.
Even though wood doesn’t sparkle, you can feel just as glamorous wearing it.
Often underrated, wooden jewellery is a trend you’ll fall in love with this season. It’s bold, trendy and eco-savvyWoodDo WoodDo

Burkina Faso to New York
Burkindy, a jewellery designer originally from Burkina Faso, draws on his homeland for inspiration. Patterns and shapes found on African masks and artefacts, as well as other symbols of West African culture, all find their way into his pieces made in yellow or white gold.
Hand-made in Brooklyn, New York, the textured rings and cuffs are set with emeralds, blue topaz, diamonds and ruby to add hints of colour.
Manhattan retailer Sartoria Studio currently stocks a robust collection of Burkindy’s designs crafted in gold, sterling silver, brass, gemstones, leather and beadwork.
The arena presence and positive attitude of American-Israeli show-jumper and Olympian Dani G Waldman caught the attention of equestrian jeweller Karina Brez. Their collaboration on a new collection, Fearless Feathers by Dani G, includes rings and bracelets. The collection consists of six designs sporting a feather and a horse hoof. Made in 14ct yellow, white or rose gold, it's available in alldiamonds, a rainbow of sapphire colours or a blue or pink sapphire ombre.
Melissa Spalten, founder of Los Angeles-based fine jewellery brand M Spalten, loves designing with unexpected gemstone combinations. In her new Gemfetti linear earrings, she combines trillion cuts, oval cabochons with emerald cuts and round-faceted stones. The designs feature anything from three to eight
stones such as Mexican fire opals, turquoises, garnets, pink tourmalines, amethysts, iolites, opal doublets, citrines, peridots and chrome diopsides. The eight gem iterations have been styled as shoulderdusters. All the earrings can be designed with or without diamond huggies and custom Gemfetti earrings can be designed in coloured gems of the client’s choice.
Secret Garden, a nature-inspired collection designed by Logan Hollowell for Brilliant Earth, blooms with lab-grown diamonds, pink sapphires and emeralds. The line comprises 12 styles set in floral, butterfly and thorn motifs.
Inspired by the delicate strength and resilience of a rose, it includes earrings, necklaces and rings. Its centrepiece is an 8ct lab-grown diamond thorn collar adorned with 138 round lab-grown diamonds set in recycled 14ct white or yellow gold.
The MasterCard x Bevza Collection, created by Ukrainian designer Svitlana Bevza, consists of a pin, a pendant and a pair of earrings that combine kalyna with the iconic MasterCard symbol. Kalyna, or the red viburnum tree, has been a cultural symbol for Ukrainians for centuries. Each piece designed and produced in Kyiv, Ukraine, is part of a zero-waste initiative. All of the net proceeds will support the Ukraine House DC Foundation to finance prosthetics and rehabilitation programmes for Ukrainian children injured in the Russia-Ukraine war.
The Kalyna collection is available exclusively on the MasterCard Priceless platform at priceless.com and can be purchased by cardholders in SA.
British fine jeweller Cece FeinHughes’ Ribbon collection is inspired by 18th-century Rococostyle paintings. The five beautifully hand-painted champlevé enamel signet rings and pendants have been hand-crafted in 18ct gold and decorated with enamelled ribbons and star-set diamonds.
“I’ve paired beautiful painterly ribbons with engravings such as skulls and crossbones, compasses, and hearts and arrows. I think these extra elements add a tattoo-like edge to
each piece,” explains Fein-Hughes. She’s matched each engraving on the small signet rings and pendants to the colour of the ribbon.
On her Instagram page, goldsmith and jewellery designer Rachel Quinn describes herself as a “shameless lover of hearts”. It’s no surprise, then, that her latest assortment of pinkie rings – set to glow at Melee The Show – are chubby hearts which have been given a pastel treatment with enamel.
“I find hearts endlessly inspiring and wanted to make an already joyful shape even more so by adding colourful enamel patterns to a nice, plump heart shape. I chose pastels for their sweet candy-coloured hues, making the rings graphic, yet soft,” says Quinn, who hand-crafts her pieces in her Los Angeles studio.

Her leafy offerings titled Mano De Leon (MDL) has earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces made in 18ct gold and employs carved malachite, onyx or agate with gold inlay over the motifs.
“I like foliage and the leaf Mano De Leon is a common foliage that I grew up seeing. It has big green leaves and a heartlike shape. It’s elegant, but wild at the same time,” explains the designer, who’s studded the pieces with pink seed pearls and freshwater pearls.
