W
eddings involve countless decisions, all of which add up to a special,
memorable celebration. One decision that will always be remembered in a very special way is the choice of engagement and wedding ring. With so much to choose from, it can be difficult finding the right style for you. Here are our top 10:
JZA YOUR JEWELLERY MAGAZINE
12
▶ Oval-cut diamonds An oval-cut diamond is an increasingly popular choice for engagement rings. These diamonds are praised for their brilliance and elongated appearance, which can be extremely flattering on your hand. ◀ Bezel-set diamonds Bezel-setting is growing in popularity, as it allows the diamond to be showcased more prominently. The metal frames the diamond tightly, protecting it from damage. Bezelset diamonds can also be set much lower into the ring, which can help prevent the stone from getting caught on things during your day-to-day activities.

for you and can feature any type of stone or design you desire. A ring like this can also be more sentimental and heartfelt, because you can design it exactly to the specifications you or your partner love.
▶ Three-stone (trilogy) engagement rings Three-stone rings historically represent a couple’s past, present and future, making them particularly meaningful. Another plus is that you can embrace your creativity and choose your favourite diamond cuts and colours to make it truly one-of-a-kind. It often features a centre diamond and two smaller diamonds on either side, which can add extra sparkle to your ring.

◀ Lab-grown diamonds If you’re looking for a less expensive diamond option, lab-grown diamonds are right up there. These diamonds are grown in a laboratory, which means no mining, less environmental impact and a much lower price-tag, while still getting a tough diamond that will last forever. ▼ Coloured gemstones Some of the most popular gemstones include rubies, sapphires and emeralds. The eventual shape of a pearl is determined by a number of highly variable factors which occur inside the oyster as the pearl’s developing. Pearl rings A big, bold ring makes quite a statement, especially if it has a round pearl on the top! Flaunt it at a party or a wedding, particularly at night. Pearl earrings Pearl earrings, which are strikingly simple and timeless studs, are a classic every woman must own. Pair them with your everyday wear, a silk sarie or a gorgeous gown – you’re bound to turn heads. Pearl necklaces Gorgeous pearls strung together on your collarbone can make any outfit glamorous. An interesting fact: as you increase or
decrease the length of a pearl necklace, each length has a different name. The names start from minimum to maximum length – collar, choker, princess, matinée, opera and rope or lariat. When it comes to jewellery, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel – or the pearl. Pearls are eternal classics. They’re the epitome of demure, but classy style and will never let you down. THE LOVE OF JEWELLERY
BEATS IN ZA Get to know homegrown brand Smith Jewellery How did your love affair with jewellery begin? It was shaped by the women in my life during my childhood. My mother doesn’t wear a lot of jewellery (and still doesn’t have pierced ears), but always has a favourite selection of antique jewels available for special occasions. My Italian grandmother often wore large, beautifully crafted enamel shell earrings and Indian enamel bangles. I suppose

being exposed early on to outstanding craftsmanship and an extraordinary design aesthetic helped foster my love of jewellery. What inspired you to start Smith Jewellery? When I returned to SA after studying in Milan, I realised that I’d worked (and studied) myself into a niche market. It had always been my dream to have my own business, so I started Smith while working at Elle Decoration magazine, eventually going full-time in 2013.
Can you talk us through the process of design and making? I tend to see something inspiring – an antique jewel, a piece of wallpaper or a seed pod – and start from there. I often turn an idea into a piece and then build a collection around it, or troubleshoot it until it makes technical and design sense. I often

only put my designs down on paper when I’m working with clients. What do you enjoy most about your job? Actualising an idea. Building something from scratch, troubleshooting the technical issues and then having a beautiful piece at the end that my clients love is extremely satisfying.
What’s your favourite gemstone? I’ve always been drawn to the colours of tourmalines. If you could pick anyone to wear your jewellery, who would it be? I’ve never really thought about it. I enjoy knowing that my jewellery’s bringing some joy into people’s everyday lives, so having one particular person wearing it doesn’t seem to be important.

ersonalised jewellery is about creating an emotional connection to a time, place or event – something
that’s very special. Tiffany & Co, for example, is well-known for its customisable jewellery range where a piece can be engraved, embossed or etched with a monogram, date or message to make it one of a kind. On ZA homeground, we discovered Memi – a personalised jewellery range par excellence whose offerings are world-class, from necklaces to bracelets, earrings and charms. Not only do the pieces show off your taste in fashion, but they can display personal information, like a birthday, hobby or relationship status, and create a sense of unique individuality.
All items are available in 9ct and 14ct yellow, white and rose gold, as well as in silver. They’re rhodium-plated, using only genuine quality diamonds. Swarovski crystals are used for the birthstone accents and beads. “Me.mi” means “me, myself and I”. You can’t get more personal than that!

Louis Erard This striking, quirky watch was wonderfully designed and shaped by Alain Silberstein – artist, designer, watchmaker, architect and a pioneer of the creative watch at the end of the 1980s. What’s so much fun about this one is the fact that the days of the week are displayed through seven different smiley faces. While the week kicks off with a grumpy face on Monday, it gradually becomes happier as the days go by and the weekend approaches. Never a truer depiction!

brand-new endeavour, Alondra, that was launched recently. “With Alondra pieces, we’re able to use the very same labgrown diamonds and gemstones that are used in Lark & Berry pieces. The only difference, as far as materials go, is that Alondra pieces are made with silver and 18k gold vermeil. The desire of this wide audience to invest in solid gold pieces has grown rapidly since Lark & Berry launched, so we’re thrilled to be able to meet that demand,” she says. Design-wise, Alondra enables Laura to explore ideas, concepts and designs that are different from the Lark & Berry style. With Alondra, shes now focusing specifically on creating larger-sized conversation pieces with a modern, edgy flair to really make personal styles pop. £1 000,” she adds. The product styles include chain links realised as necklaces, pendants, rings, ear cuffs and bracelets that make great layering pieces. The stackable element is something Chavez has carried over from Lark & Berry – her first brand launched in 2018. “I think the possibility of stacking also allows people to get creative with their personal style and really match it to their personality,” she says. Another great design aspect for Horizon is the ability to flip several of the pieces, such as the Horizon double-sided pendant or bracelet, to reveal either diamonds or black spinel, highlighted with white or black rhodium. “We really liked the freedom of choice aspect of these pieces and the distinct colours and accents,” says Chavez.
The Horizon collection was inspired by the beauty of a horizon, she adds. “We had clear skies and defined colours separated by clean, distinct lines in mind. For us, the chain links featured in the Horizon pieces are just as much symbols of a close connection to the planet and a desire to do well for it by supporting lab-grown diamonds. Every decision we make in buying anything, as consumers, can help save the planet,” says Chavez.

Iceland’s basalt columns inspire Aurum’s latest line Chief designer, goldsmith and co-founder Guðbjörg Kristín Ingvarsdóttir launched Aurum by Guðbjörg in 1999 with the aim of introducing Icelanders to something new. “The jewellery I was making back then was nothing like what was available here,” she recalls. Her designs – all handcrafted in Reykjavik – are made in recycled gold and silver with lab-grown diamonds and ethically sourced precious gems. The designer recently launched a striking new line, Basalt, that references the magnificent rocks formed by superheated magma. Not surprising, then, that a line of jewellery inspired by the basalt has been on Guðbjörg’s mind for a long time. The 17-piece collection includes necklaces, rings, ear cuffs and earrings rendered in recycled 18k gold plate, 925 sterling silver and oxidised silver. “Iceland’s basalt columns are particularly spectacular at Reynisfjara beach on the island’s south coast. Reynisfjara is an amazing place and for a designer to be able to visit it is a dream. I've spent a lot of time there through the years – all this
gave me the inspiration for the Basalt collection and I hope my customers can sense that atmosphere I get when I look at the finished jewellery,” she adds. Some of the designs are set with moonstone, a stone believed “to help in communication with spiritual beings, the higher self and the divine”. These stones, therefore, seemed the perfect choice for the Basalt line, with the colour gently transitioning from grey to light. This, explains Guðbjörg, is the colour one would see while walking along Reynisfjara and the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Bea Bongiasca’s two-tone gold jewels are all you need this season
FORGET Italian jewellery designer Bea Bongiasca’s new collection sees her exploring her signature sinuous enamel designs in a bi-colour palette. The B Color line, being unveiled at the COUTURE jewellery show in Las Vegas, evolves across organic shapes and bright colours. Drawing on “colours of the season, from painting to interior design to fashion”, Bongiasca finds her new inspiration in DYI collages and the beauty of the collage technique in the fine arts. Her B Color collection evolves into beaded bracelets and necklaces, mini-earrings, hoops, floral pendants and earrings as well as vine rings. Harmonic compositions and contrasting shades of pastels and vibrant hues, jewel tones mixed with bright or softer tonal mixes meld effortlessly in this collection.
design process for B Color, Bongiasca says: “I started with bi-colour combinations. Once we perfected this effect, I was able to go more deeply into creating the tri-color and then the multiple colours. The other jewels have a gold and enamel look, which was also great, because it allowed us to use four to five different colours at a time.” She's
