If it weren’t for chocolate . . .
At the 11th hour, I realised I needed to pen my seasonal note. I pondered for quite a while, oscillating between the deliciousness of an emerald green Peppermint Crisp and the golden honeycomb of a Crunchie. Rather apt colour themes for a jewellery mag, I thought. I needed inspiration. As I took the last bite, these confectionery gems gave me the answer: it’s our second birthday! Hip-hip hooray to us!
Our second milestone is the perfect reason to go shopping and celebrate the occasion and the holiday gifting season – with a choice of beautiful pieces from our magical summer menu of made, bought and worn in ZA jewellery creations.
With your terrific ongoing support and enthusiasm, JZA continues to grow and glow – thank you! From all of us to all of you, happy holidays and a fabulous new year!

WHAT PEARLS WANT
Pearls are organic, environmentally sustaining gemstones that come in many shapes and colours. Their distinctive look makes them easy to wear with other gems, metals and materials. Moreover, they’re a timeless and comparatively affordable option. Pearl jewellery is fun, yet elegant and can be styled to suit all occasions, which makes them the ideal accessory this summer. Women and, yes, even men who wear pearls have an air of confidence about them.
Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but pearls are definitely a more practical and convenient choice. No matter what outfit you choose to wear, day or night, the easy-going and elegant nature of pearl jewellery will deliver a complete, put-together look. Just adding a pearl jewellery piece can do a lot in terms of appearance and presentation.
At the office Pearls instantly create a sense of authority, especially when
paired with a tailored power suit or pencil skirt. So, if you have an important meeting coming up, opt for a classic singlestrand pearl necklace. Set it against a crisp black shirt or silk blouse and add matching pearl stud earrings for a powerful, put-together look guaranteed to command respect in the boardroom.
Mid-week dates
Whether you’re grabbing coffee with friends or you’ve got a romantic lunch date, pearl jewellery’s always a
great option. Add a bit of edge to a floral day dress with a multi-strand pearl bracelet and a casual blazer or denim jacket. Or keep things simple with a cashmere jumper or loose blouse, dark jeans and low-
heeled boots. Complete the look by adding an understated pearl pendant.
Sophisticated beach look
Since pearls are harvested from clams, they’re automatically associated with beachside luxury. Whether you’re frolicking in the sand on the coast in Durban or looking at whales in Hermanus, pearls will add a dose of classic sophistication to this summer’s holiday. When wearing a sundress, make pearl earrings the focal point of your ensemble. Pearls can be mixed and matched with your sundress’s colour and print to create a unique look. When wearing yellow at the beach, a white pearl with
a gold accent would be a great addition!
Casual weekends Pearls have the unique ability to be worn both casually and formally. A simple singlestrand pearl necklace is adorable paired with a basic button-down shirt, jeans and sandals. If your build is petite, stick to smaller pearl sizes for everyday wear and save chunkier pearl jewellery designs for parties and formal events. If you’re an average or larger build, larger pearls will look fabulous anytime.
Informal night engagements The same single-strand pearl necklace worn casually by day can be striking with a graceful dress and heels at night. Add a pearl statement ring for a bit of glitz and glam or pearl earrings. If you have light hair, consider tying it up to ensure your pearl earrings are visible.
with almost any outfit to create a sophisticated line and texture. Larger pearl drop earrings are also a great option. Instead of wearing a pearl necklace in the front, consider letting it dangle off a dress with a low back. It provides a very sophisticated and stunning look. Choose coloured or cream pearls that will accent the colour of your dress. An evening wedding is also the perfect occasion to wear a pearl hairpiece.
Pearls are ideal for achieving total glam.
Summer is wedding season Pearls are almost certainly the most elegant type of jewellery for a special occasion such as a wedding. A pair of multi-strand or long pearl necklaces can be worn
Formal black-tie events
Pearls are the perfect choice for achieving total glam. For this type of look, a choker or a long, singlestrand pearl necklace will deliver timeless class and
elegance. When wearing a gown, opt for a full set of pearl jewellery – pearl necklace, pearl bracelet and pearl earrings. Alternatively, look elegant in an all-black outfit finished off with a single bold pearl statement piece. Floor-length gowns with off-shoulder styles and layered pearls or a single statement pendant also promise a dramatic look for the evening. Pearl earrings and necklace coupled with diamonds are equally great for such occasions and will suit the level of formality perfectly. Yellow or while gold also complements pearls and adds a layer of sophistication to any outfit.
Unlike some gems, pearls are available in a wide range of colours. From glistening white Akoya and golden Pinctada to delicate lavender and black Tahitian, there’s a hue and shape available to suit every occasion and anyone’s style.
With so many fun ways to wear pearls, what are you waiting for!?
If you love vibrant hues, don’t be afraid to pair black Tahitian pearls with more vivid colours like yellow, purple and green to really make them pop.
So, whether you’re on holiday or going on a weekend excursion this summer, wearing pearls means you’ll pack less and still look glamorous, no matter what the occasion.
With so many fun ways to wear pearls, what are you waiting for!?
SINGULAR
CREATIONS
Adjani designs are exquisite, imaginative pieces made from glass and other materials
Drawing inspiration from the diversity of South African cultures, Adjani and her team design and handcraft each jewellery piece from a combination of imported Murano glass and selected local materials in a process called flameworking. This is where a gas- and oxygenfuelled torch is used to melt the glass, which is then
formed into the desired shape using tools, gravity and movement.
Other quality materials such as pure silk, genuine leather, solid brass and sterling silver, as well as gold and platinum lustre, are used in the creations.
Adjani started creating jewellery pieces from glass beads with her friends as a hobby. When other people started showing interest in them, she began selling items at small shows. Her attention gradually shifted from interior design to jewellery design and her hobby gradually became her business.

AFRICAN BE AUTY
Athena Argyrakis's strong, feminine, powerful and bold “Athena A Accessories” statement pieces reflect a distinctly African heritage and beauty. They’re all about discovering and celebrating the goddess within, so each is piece named after a deity.
Argyrakis partners her design eye with local craftsmen to create her range of jewellery and accessories which are handmade from brass, aluminium and East African Ankole cowhorn. Sustainability features high on the brand’s priorities, so it ensures that all the materials used are from waste and recycled materials.
“As I present my pieces, I do so with excitement and confidence that I can create. We can all create. Don’t give up on that dream,” she says.

Friendship rings are not only a wonderful way to say “thank you” for always being there, but are timeless keepsakes your friends can treasure.
There are many different types of rings that symbolise friendship. Here are our favourite ones:
Customised rings: There are many local jewellery designers offering the ability to customise rings with different materials, colours and styles. This is a great option if you want to create truly unique rings for yourself and your friend.
Engraved rings: Having a ring engraved with your friend’s initials or a special message is something they’ll cherish forever.
THE RETURN OF THE
Forever heart rings: These represent love and commitment and send the message that no matter what happens, you'll always be there for each other.
Eternity rings: Eternity rings feature a unique infinity symbol design. This type of ring looks great on everyone and is designed to match a symbol that everyone
recognises. What better way of celebrating your friendship?
Sun and moon rings: Sun and moon shapes are based on the idea of two people echoing each other and show how much they love each other.
Birthstone rings: Wearing rings with each other’s birthstone set into them is a beautiful and personal way of reflecting your friendship.
Glow-in-the-dark silicone rings: You and your best friend will love having rings that start to glow at night. As unique as your friendship, they’re perfect if you both enjoy nights out, camping or even swimming.
You and
Whether you’ve been glued at the hip since you were kids, work pals
who’ve become inseparable or long-lost friends who’re reconnecting, friendship rings are the perfect way to show that special individual just how much they mean to you. No matter what type of ring you choose, make sure it’s thoughtful and something your friend will love and cherish forever.
Of course, you don’t need a set of rings to express your friendship – but it can be a fun and special way of acknowledging your bond. What’s more, each of you will always feel as if the other one’s close by every time either of you looks at your hands.
IN THE KNOW
Five emerging jewellery brands share their insights
Starting a jewellery brand is incredibly demanding, with so many aspects to consider and make decisions upon. The way in which every designer embarks on a unique, personal journey is fascinating, so we asked five emerging fine jewellery brands to share their best tips for newcomers in the industry.
▼ Eayni Jewels When designing, the two things I focus on most are simplicity and elegance.
▶ Seema Somani In the course of 22 years as a designer, my designs have always been based on the core theory that if jewellery doesn't enhance the glamour quotient of its wearer, then the purpose is lost.
◀ Noora Shawqi Know what you're selling. We should always know the characteristics, quality, and design of the elements we’re working with to be better at what we do. I'd advise taking educational courses on stones and jewellery designing, it impacts greatly when it comes to real life-applications.
▼ Khayal Fine Jewelry
Doing research is the most important tip. In an industry as big as jewellery, you have to stand out by offering something new and unique in your designs.
▲ Stone Fine Jewelry
It’s important never to compromise on the ethos of the brand and offer design pieces that will stand the test of time.
Maiden Stone is a jewellery brand celebrating beautiful designs with an unusual edge. Established by Terri Lynne Stone, Maiden Stone was officially launched in 2015 during the second year of her diploma. After graduating, she took a break from all things jewellery to gallivant through South-East Asia. Returning to Durban in 2019, she picked up where she’d left off, with a head full of ideas and hands itching to get back into what she loved.
“When designing our jewellery, we strive to stay true to our own unique style, which is inspired by the diversity, cultures and

beauty of our motherland, South Africa,” she says. “We truly value unique designs and we love all things that are just a little different. This is the core design principle of our brand.” www.maidenstone.co.za
Founded in 2015 by award-winning Botswana-born designer Onê Rapelana, Xita (pronounced “Zeeta”) creates functional, quirky and bold handcrafted pieces made primarily from faux leather and different types of fabric.
DESIGN MAGIC FROM BOTSWANA
Onê's standout designs are inspired by shades associated with bravery and a fascination with geometric shapes which many describe as “Afro-futuristic”.
Xita’s brand philosophy is to resonate and inspire boldness. Its unique design aesthetic – which sets its one-of-a-kind statement jewellery creations apart from the mainstream – has made the brand one of the most fashion-forward on the African continent.

BRASS
From avant-garde to classic, modern and contemporary styles, men’s brass jewellery is a terrific festive gift option – for yourself or your significant other.
Brass is often an overlooked metal, not being as shiny as gold, nor as widely utilised as sterling silver. It’s technically an alloy of copper and zinc, but that doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that it can
give even the most mundane everyday items new life. Its weight and general heft add durability, which means these items will last a lifetime.
While brass looks good around your neck or on your wrist, it can also form a great contrast to a leather bracelet or belt.
DREAMING OF A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS
The festive season is just around the corner and Middle Eastern jewellers are all set with their most intriguing and sparkling fine jewellery pieces. Dubai-based TOi Fine Jewelry’s latest creation, the show-stopping Sparkle Sapphire earrings, and AILES Jewelry’s signature diamond Wave choker are sure to make it onto your Christmas wishlist.
Obari’s Versant rings make the perfect present; stackable, versatile and modern. The rainbow sapphire Lulu earrings by Sarah Noor embody understated elegance, while La Marquise Jewellery’s mirror-polished Lumière collection shines bright. For some old-world glamour, Stone Fine Jewelry’s Victory chain is fun and chic.
BLUE
ave we got blues for you! Watches in blue hues are making waves this summer. Drawing on ocean colours and clear sky palettes, the offerings make terrific day- and nightwear options.
1. Rado True Thinline Les Couleurs™ Le Corbusier Spectacular Ultramarine. First introduced to the collection in 2011, these stunning watches are Rado’s slimmest and the first to feature the ground-breaking monobloc case. 2. Swarovski Octea Lux Chrono watch. Swiss-made. SISTERS ARE DOING IT
Founded by three sisters, Danah, Alanoud and Reema, JEED Jewelry is Saudi Arabia’s first physical conceptual jewellery store. Located in the capital, Riyadh, JEED has curated the finest, emerging jewellery designers from the Middle East under one roof. Showcasing a diverse range of brands such as AILES Jewelry, L’Atelier Nawbar and Shamsa Alabbar, the founders believe that art and

Dubbed “a gift to the girls of Riyadh,” JEED is the go-to destination for those seeking something truly special and unique. JEED's distinguishing feature is its clear focus on onboarding playful, luxury brands that are part of the new wave of jewellery designing, as opposed to the traditional style that is ubiquitous.

WORDS BY SMITHA SADANANDANIn the spotlight
Bright Young Gems is all about helping UK graduating jewellery design students take that big leap into the commercial world. A panel of judges – from the press and the industry – select the best graduates and mentor them. The John Lewis team came to the UK Jewellery Fair and soon a fashionable collaboration transpired.
Imogen Burch and Zeemou Zeng are the two young talents who have just launched their limited-edition jewellery with the British retailer. Zeemou met the John Lewis buying team in 2021. They were looking for young jewellers to work with and as a former Bright Young Gem they were keen to meet Zeemou.
The design brief was to create a collection to suit their customer profile and yet offer something new and fresh. “They felt my design atheistic of playful and unisex offered this. ‘The Smile’, is a collection of five intricately crafted pieces in 9k gold with natural freshwater pearls, which freely move within the smile of each piece. These are playful talismans representing happiness, freedom and joy, inspired by the well-known quote ‘Smile and the world smiles with you’.
Imogen Burch’s focus is “on creating beautiful and valuable pieces of jewellery that will be kept and worn for years. Her ‘Cocktail’ line is an imaginative and playful twist on traditional fine jewellery where she takes sober, conservative designs and turns them into more light-hearted versions of themselves. This debut collection pieces are handcrafted from 9k yellow gold and semi-precious gemstones, emerald-cut green amethyst, oval-cut sky blue topaz and pear-cut rose quartz.
Charity, sustainability and sparkle
New York-based fine jewelry agency Muse is expanding its charitable charming initiative ‘Have A Heart’ with new brand ambassador Meeling Wong. Muse collaborates with talented designers on charm jewellery; the goal is to benefit various charitable causes.
Meeling hit upon a promising idea. “This project inspired me differently about how to contribute without wasting,” she says.
“The six designers who partnered with us on this journey created their Have A Heart charms with recycled materials, repurposing old gemstones and using scrap materials from their own archives.”
With its focus on regeneration rather than production, this edition of the charms for
a cause is bound to challenge creators to think and work differently.
Ten percent of proceeds from the sales will benefit charity:water, an organisation with the ambitious goal of ending the global water crisis and support the goal of helping the jewellery community raise t $10,000, needed to sponsor a well. So, a small band of designers came up with beautiful heart charms – all made from recycled materials.
The six designers were London-based jewellery designer Annoushka Ducas, artist jeweller Christopher Thompson Royds, Brazilian born jewellery designer Fernando, designers Ron Anderson and David Rees of Ten Thousand Things, Vietnam born Nghi, designer of NN by Nghi and Graziela Kaufman

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE
pièce de ré·sis·tance: an outstanding item or event: SHOWPIECE
"Is it Too Much?" by Eric Loubser
Part of his "Gone but not Forgotten" series, this vintage gold frame holds a beautiful carved onyx cameo and is embellished with pearls and coral beads. The pendant is strung on a black silk cord.
Eric comments that he "generally works with precious materials –silver, gold, diamonds, pearls and other precious stones – as well as less traditional materials such as plastics and found objects. Craftsmanship is very important to me, and I hand-make my pieces using traditional (and sometimes some not-so-traditional) goldsmithing techniques.
"I play around with very traditional forms in terms of the design, but reinterpret them quite radically by using non-traditional ways of making the pieces, or just putting a bit of a spin on it.
